Altoist Lee Konitz has recorded in many different types of settings through the years. This sparse outing matches Konitz in a pianoless trio with bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart. The focus is mostly on Konitz, and he is in top form, playing inventively and thoughtfully on four originals (most of which have chord changes based on standards), a piece by McClure, and the ballad “Angel Eyes.” This is a melodic and cool-toned bop session that finds Lee Konitz often sounding as if he is thinking aloud.

Being one of the newest percussion instruments on the planet, (circa 1939) the steel pan is actually on a similar timeline with the development of modern jazz. Taking into consideration strong African influences and a hybridization process, they appear to be a natural combination. Pan Master Leon Foster Thomas has taken the instrument most associated with his homeland of Trinidad, right into the heart of jazz composition and performance with Metamorphosis, in a bold rhythmic and melodic encounter.

With shades of early Kaiso (calypso) music blended with jazz, “Kai-Fusion,” lays the soundscape for the pan to interplay with the horns, all revolving around carnival derivations and imaginings. The utilization of twin trumpets and a sax gives this opening track exhilarating anticipation and excitement. In a throwback to when bands had to play dance music to make it, “Midnight Refrain,” honors the speakeasies and clubs where the audience and musicians collided in a mutual sense of satisfaction and good times.

The “Gulf of Paria,” lies in between Trinidad and Venezuela, and in this piece Thomas portrays an aquatic introspection exercise, commencing with a tranquil piano/pan melody, setting the mood for trumpeter John Daversa to soar into the clouds. “In the Corner,” is a personal manifestation of a musicians doubts, and how to overcome them. Thomas enters unchartered zones, rising with angst, and sliding into consolation, revealing a full spectrum of emotions. Percussionist Sammy Figueroa is featured on “Delusion of a Dream,” the most Caribbean flavored track, and “Unknown Memory,” is a bop-fusion adventure with Daversa on the EVI (electronic valve instrument) for a futuristic approach.

The sounds and influence of reggae are evident on “Dubplate Swing,” but then Thomas dives into blues territory with some clever harmonious twists and turns, accenting the pan against the horns. The African currents flow within the soca inspired Nelson Mandela tribute “Take A Bow,” Jean Caze playing vivid trumpet phrasing reminiscent of Hugh Masakela. “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” endures as one of the great ballads of the rock era, and Thomas with perfect piano accompaniment by Martin Bejeran performs an intimate odyssey, as if the song was initially intended to be performed on a steel pan. A lesson in mastery of technique, tone and tempo, all as the ceiling flew away. The band all gets to stretch out on “Cry of Hope,” a rising frenetic bopper which closes out the repertoire on a high note.

Whereas the steel pans are usually centered on calypso and other Caribbean music, Leon Foster Thomas has an abstract crossover intent. He utilizes formal musical training and education, combined with his innate Trinidad heritage, to obtain maximum benefit of the uniqueness options. This is steel pan music for contemporary times, no longer is it a novel instrument with colorful applications. He takes his jazz compositions seriously, and technically exhibits how the steel pan can be applied within these parameters. Metamorphosis is defined as a marked change in appearance, character, and function, all applicable to Thomas, and his music, as he takes this relatively young instrument into maturity.

Al Hendrickson became one of the most prolifically recorded studio guitarists in the history of American music following a career as a jazz and dance band guitarist and studies as a classical stringmeister. His name is frequently mutilated in recording credits, leading to the mistaken if perhaps understandable conclusion that more than one guitarist was responsible for all this work. He can be cited as the missing link between the Weavers and the Monkees or between artists with such cool names yet diverse styles as country novelty king Sheb Wooley and bebop pianist Dodo Marmarosa. Famous records this guitarist contributed to include “Moon River,” “Memories Are Made of This,” and “Goodnight, Irene.”

He was born Alton Hendrickson, one of the names under which he is sometimes credited, spending the first five years of his life in Texas before heading to the West Coast. His professional involvements started with big-band leader Artie Shaw in 1940, followed by a stint in the Coast Guard that concluded circa the mid-’40s. He then began working with bandleaders such as Freddie Slack, Ray Linn, and Benny Goodman, at one point holding the guitar chair in a special sextet fronted by the latter clarinetist. He was soon in extreme demand for film and television soundtracks as well as pop sessions, the Columbia label signing him up to an exclusive contract in 1959.

Drummer Skip Prokop formed Lighthouse in 1968 and began adding members soon after: guitarist Ralph Cole (whom Prokop had played with in the Paupers), Grant Fullerton, Pinky Dauvin, saxophonist Howard Shore, cellist Dick Armin, violinist Don DiNovo, keyboard player Paul Hoffert, saxophonist Keith Jollimore, vocalist Bob McBride, trumpeter Peter Pantaluk, trombonist Larry Smith and bassist Louis Yackniw. The band released two singles on RCA in 1970 and played at the Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals and the Isle of Wight Festival, though they had turned down Woodstock. In late 1970, GRT released Lighthouse’s debut album, Peacing It All Together. 1971 brought One Fine Morning and Thoughts of Movin’ On, and in 1972, the band released Lighthouse Live! and Sunny Days. The band lost members, beginning in 1973 when Paul Hoffert left, followed by Bob McBride and Skip Prokop in 1974; the group eventually disbanded in 1976. Lighthouse had released Can You Feel It (1973) and Good Day (1974), and in 1975, The Best of Lighthouse appeared. Original members re-formed for live shows in 1982 and 1993, and another greatest hits album, The Best of Lighthouse Sunny Days Again, was issued in 1989. Postcards from Heaven followed in 1998. Both Bob McBride and Skip Prokop had somewhat successful solo careers. Sadly, Bob McBride lost his battle with substance abuse February 20, 1998. He was 51.

Lissie – Live At Union Chapel Recorded 8th December 2015. Selling out in less than 24 hours, and performing with just her acoustic guitar, it was clear from the very start that this show was going to be a show to remember The event kicked off her ‘My Wild West’ album campaign, which saw her achieve her 3rd Top 20 UK album, perform on CNN News International, raise thousands of dollars for charity as part of International Women’s Day, gain three BBC Radio 2 playlist additions and receive huge critical acclaim. “Undoubtedly her best album yet” – Q. “Another bittersweet triumph” – The Independent on Sunday. “Wild West contains her most convincing songs yet” – Evening Standard. “Country rock calm flows through this album, her voice a mix of Stevie Nicks and Lana Del Rey” – Daily Express. “Lissie’s third album is the country-rocking belle’s fond farewell to Los Angeles” – Daily Mail. “Fits somewhere between the rustic charm of Emmylou Harris and a dash of Stevie Nicks” – The Times. “An album made by an artist who is still top of her game” – The 405. “Spellbinding” – Red Bull. “An intoxicating return” – Clash. This new live album truly captures the power and raw energy that Lissie possesses, demonstrating her ability to captivate 1000 people with just her voice and guitar.

Following quickly on the heels of the lushly produced studio album My Wild West, Live at Union Chapel returns Lissie to her folkie beginnings. It’s just her and her acoustic guitar (the exception is a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River,” which features piano), and that minimalism helps steer attention to both Lissie’s songs and her strengths as a performer. Stripped of all the appealing studio tricks, Lissie seems bolder, and such confidence helps make Live at Union Chapel a bit more than a detour for fans: it’s a compelling record in its own right. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Franco-Algerian, Brooklyn based Lolo Zouaï creates what she calls “bittersweet bangers” and “High Highs to Low Lows” stands as the epitome of her low-key, R&B vibe.

22-year-old singer-songwriter Lolo Zouaï only has a few songs out there but they amassed millions of streams. In 2017, she notably received the prestigious “Songwriters Hall of Fame Abe Olman award” for “Still Down” featured on “H.E.R’s. Vol.2.” This year, she is well on her way to becoming a breakout star.

Her latest single “High Highs To Low Lows” is about the struggles and instability of starting a career in the music industry. Money issues and long months of patience to perfectly time the next move associated with stress and heartache inspired Lolo to write about the roller coaster that is life. Something Lolo Zouaï wanted to incorporate in her self-directed DIY video: “We just wanted to show what our world looks like…” she said speaking to Milk.

The smooth, Stelios produced soundscape ends with some inspiring French spoken word as Lolo looks on the bright side, appreciating that the lows in life give much more meaning to the highs. Like a Jigglypuff, Lolo Zouaï contemplates her fears and enemies with cute eyes, and puts them to sleep with a soothing song. The girl wants it all and with such state of mind something tells us she won’t have to spend much time grinding in her bedroom studio anymore.

An irreverent songwriter, Lorene Mann achieved minor success as a Nashville-based country artist in the mid-‘60s. Her first success came as a duet partner with Justin Tubb and Archie Campbell, but when she struck out on her own she provided country fans with an oft not heard take on dating and love. Her “Don’t Put Your Hands on Me” was a call to arms for any woman ever hit on in a bar by a drunken slob. Even more controversial was her song “Hide My Sin,” in which she tells the sad tale of a woman who decides to terminate her pregnancy while backup singers chime in by spelling out ABORTION. After those minor hits, though, Mann soon faded from the scene. Perhaps her songs were just too far ahead of their time. In fact, they’re still ahead of their time in conservative Nashville.

Changing Shapes is Lorenzo Vitolo’s debut recording project whose songs were written during different moments of his musical and artistic growth. The thread that links these compositions is the continuous change of shapes and notes, of spaces and times, of thoughts and feelings.

The project was realized in a trio line-up of musicians with whom Lorenzo had already collaborated for different concerts in their home town of Groningen in the Netherlands. This trio has found a great unity, despite the geographical distances and the different musical backgrounds of each musician. Lorenzo Vitolo has a background of classical music and jazz studies, re-emerging in his compositions and performances.

He is continuously inspired by the study of and listening to those who created before him, and he appropriately mixes his knowledge with the one offered by the infinite horizon of this beautiful music that is jazz. Rafael Abdalla, the double bass player, comes from San Paolo. He has three albums and a large number of participations in music and record projects by other musicians. He contributes to the project with his deep understanding of the wonderful Brazilian music that he mixes wisely with modern jazz sounds. George Potamianos, the drummer, is from Patras, Greece. After his studies in Greece he moved to Holland to perfect his jazz studies. He is involved in various projects, and he always supports music with his great energy, with which he creates a powerful empathy with the other musicians and listeners.

It’s no longer a secret that saxophonist Lutz Häfner is one of the greatest in his field. World-class level, which cannot be explained with technical skills alone.

This artist knows how to take his audience far away into undiscovered soundscapes and to challenge them with unusual interpretations. At the same time, he enchants with a harmonious, deep poetry and distinctive chasing. In 2013 he was rightly awarded ECHO Jazz for Best Instrumentalist National Saxophones for his album Deep, which he recorded in a duo with Rainer Böhm.

Expanded by four cellists, comes with No Lonely Nights. The two exceptional musicians Rainer Böhm and Lutz Häfner have once again taken on the task of creating particularly eloquent, flexible music. They celebrate the finely chiseled, rhythmic and harmonic finesse of their music with a minimalist sound aesthetic and a depth beyond virtuoso gimmicks. Together with the four cellists, the duo not only proves their incomparable ability for lyrical, sensitive interpretations: it quickly becomes clear that perfect partners have been found here. Together, the musicians succeed in creating a relaxed atmosphere without much accessories. Where the soft saxophone sound meets brilliant piano sounds, a very special mood is created that invites you to dream, think and let go.

Best known for her Grammy-winning smash “Rose Garden,” Lynn Anderson was one of the most popular female country singers of the early ’70s, helped by her regular exposure on national television. The music on the CD is as colorful as the lettering on the cover. With this in-house production, Hans-Günther Kölz on the keys and Wolfgang Russ, bass and guitar, fulfilled a long-cherished wish.

Among them is Matthias Anton, who impresses with an extremely versatile saxophone playing that is experienced in all styles, and Achim Schweikert as a solid and sensitive drummer.

The quartet has a common point of reference with the city of music Trossingen, all four musicians have often played together in very different formations, which is unmistakable on this CD.

The line-up is rounded off by Frank Wellert, lead trumpeter of the HR big band, who draws attention with a velvety flugelhorn sound.

From the delicate Bossa Nova like the introductory Sonho (“dream” in Portuguese) by Wolfgang Ruß to the powerful round trip penned by Matthias Anton, from swing classics like Ellington’s In a mellow tone to groovy sounds, this production offers a very wide range of what is called “jazz”. With different line-ups, from duo to quintet, listening to them creates a great arc of tension, not a moment of boredom in 53 minutes. Absolutely worth listening to! ”(Matthias Martin)

The Melt Trio’s third album has an atmospheric yet exciting effect. Bernhard and Peter Meyer and Moritz Baumgärtner have refined their special style and show even greater will to design in details. Their combination of acoustic and electronic sounds is more subtle than ever, concrete influences from jazz and classical modern to post and prog rock can only be made out in a vague way, because the music simply sounds like a melt trio. It has always been one of the band’s trademarks to merge composed and improvised passages in such a way that they can hardly be distinguished. Conventional structures, such as the succession of leitmotif and soloistic abstractions, have long been dissolved at Melt. And if you are looking for fretboard witchcraft for your own sake, you are welcome to find something else.

Through many joint concerts in recent years, Meyer, Meyer and Baumgärtner have grown into one entity, almost a musical organism. They select the right timbres from their wide range of expressions at the right time, with determination and focus. Cooperations with Jan Bang, Tony Malaby, John Hollenbeck, Jim Black or Theo Bleckmann have also given the three personalities maturity. All of this can be heard on Stroy. “When I wrote the pieces for the album, I already had upcoming concerts in my head,” explains Bernhard Meyer, “especially the energy, spontaneity and openness that arises on stage.” Quieter moments live from nuances and subtle ramifications that sometimes change continuously condense and exaggerate, sometimes interspersed with suddenly illuminating expressions. The dynamic is great, but seldom comes up like an attack, rather it swells up and down slowly. The individual pieces and the entire album are reminiscent of a meandering river, sometimes contemplative, sometimes riddled with rapids. The band seems to move upstream towards the source in the course of the plate.

Instead of striving for spectacular speed, the Melt Trio sometimes creates spun, almost ecstatic moods. Tensions arise when the music always moves forward within a composition instead of rotating in circles as is often the case. Improvisations and solos are not individual actions fired one after the other. Rather, they come and go almost unnoticed, arise suddenly from sound and context, serve as substantial bridges to tell the musical story further. With the goal in mind to arrive somewhere else and not to land again at the starting point. The poetry inherent in this music finds its counterpart in the title of the album. The band already gave the previous record a suggestive name: Hymnolia. It is no coincidence that the playful artificial word Stroy is reminiscent of “story”. In addition – and more importantly – for Melt it associates the opposite of “destroy”. Their motivation is to build up sounds and atmospheres instead of tearing structures down violently.

The distinctive sound awareness of the three musicians has history. In recent years, especially in other constellations, they have worked out their personal musical manuscripts more and more. Bernhard Meyer is one of the few in his field who plugs a semi-resonance bass, sometimes plays a double role as a priming bassist and rhythm guitarist and prepares the ground for extensive improvisations. Its gravitational field holds events together at all times. Peter Meyer sometimes transfers the aesthetics of acoustic pickings to the electric guitar, creates individual harmonic twists and turns between clever complexity and emotional depth. Both Meyers know how to deal with effect devices and loopers, elegantly combine the warm timbre of wood and targeted digital technology. Moritz Baumgärtner developed a singular, immediately identifiable expression as a drummer. His playing is characterized by sonic quality, unusual use of materials (various metal, metal, megaphone and much more) and energy spurts that can break loose with the wasteful power of a volcanic eruption. Baumgärtner has always oscillated between styles, acting as a sovereign backbone for Lisbeth Quartet, Johanna Borchert and the electro punk band Frittenbude, among others, for the crazy rock circus Bonaparte from 2010 to 2014. “In the past, we were mainly inspired by things that we heard,” Baumgärtner summarizes the development from his point of view, “today we draw from our own experience. We are even clearer at which moment we use certain gestures and sounds. You peel off more and more and see the core. ”

The Meyer brothers have been playing together since their teenage years, long as a guitar trio with a changing drummer, “because there were simply no saxophonists or pianists in our village with whom we could have worked.

The liner notes of Red Hook Soul tell the story – a positive dedication to both perfection of the musical craft and to the strength of the neighborhood. This record is not about pyrotechnics despite the incredible playing from the entire band – it’s about a seasoned set of musicians down at the corner bar with a deep understanding of the roots of music and culture. The title track feels like an old friend, moving you down the road on the way to work at the shipyard. Double GRAMMY® nominees Midland return with Let It Roll, their second critically lauded project. The hard-working trio recorded the album in four different cities in the throes of “a tour that will never end.” Lead singer/guitarist Mark Wystrach, lead guitarist/vocalist Jess Carson and bassist/vocalist Cameron Duddy are just doing what they know. Having again teamed with the esteemed production superteam of Dann Huff, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, Let It Roll may be the understatement of the year. At a time when country seems to be leaning back into its ‘70s and ‘90s roots, Midland continues deeper onto the path they’ve blazed since dropping “Drinkin’ Problem.” They’ve just leaned even deeper into the kind of classic Country themes that embrace moral weakness, carnal pleasure and the way nothing soothes a rubbed raw reckoning like a jukebox song.

Miguel Gorodi is a Spanish born trumpeter and composer who is now based in London following his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is a hugely versatile musician and I have previously encountered his playing in a sideman context in such large ensembles as the Patchwork Jazz Orchestra, Andrew Linham Jazz Orchestra and the Sam Leak Big Band. Currently Gorodi is a member of pianist Barry Green’s sextet, saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi’s SEED Ensemble, the London City Big Band, the London Jazz Orchestra and the contemporary trad revivalists the Dixie Ticklers. He has also worked with the vocalists Ian Shaw and Lauren Bush.

He also co-leads a duo with drummer Dave Ingamells and a quartet with alto saxophonist Sam Braysher. It all makes for a busy musical life but Gorodi also finds time to lead the excellent nonet that appears on this exceptional début recording. Nothing that I’d heard from Gorodi’s work as a sideman prepared me for the quality of this album. In terms of both writing and playing it represents a real eye opener.

The album is produced by vibraphonist/drummer/pianist Jim Hart, who approaches Gorodi’s often complex writing with a musician’s ear and helps to bring out the warmth, colour and richness of the music.

As a writer Gorodi is influenced by jazz composers such as Steve Coleman, Steve Lehman, Tyshawn Sorey, Thelonious Monk and Wayne Shorter. From the classical sphere he cites Louis Andriessen, Gerard Grisey, Per Norgard and Igor Stravinsky.

“Ice is made of water, but it is colder than water. Blue dye comes from the Indigo plant, but when something is repeatedly dyed in it, the color is deeper than the plant itself.” The phrase, greater than the sum of it’s parts, suggests a thing is better than you would expect from the individual parts, because the way they combine adds a different quality. This principle describes the synergy which exists between individuals working together in a cooperative effort. Collectively, they are able to achieve an outcome superior to individual efforts. Of course, this concept is exemplified in music, and sometimes the results defy expectation, explanation, or definition. When legendary drummer Mike Clark was asked to reprise the stellar band he assembled and presented a few months before for an encore at New York’s famous Iridium Club, all felt he had to record it. The alchemy from this particular mix, of these particular musicians, was too exceptional for a Tibetan sand painting, to be a trace in the memories of the players and audience alone. And so for one remarkable weekend in autumn in New York, the music was captured and recorded. The music speaks for itself.

His father was a railroad man and Mike picked up a great understanding of different musical styles around the country while riding the rails. From Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters to a long list of the greats, Mike Clark shows how it’s done both on the drums and as a Jazzman. Hip, positive, and adventurous at 70, Mike met up with his longtime friend Delbert Bump and together they tracked an album of Hammond based grooves – Retro Report, bringing in young Elias Lucero to rip it up on guitar with some horn touches from Vince Denham and Rob Dixon. This is your Father’s Jazz, your Sister’s Jazz, your long lost Uncle Benny’s Jazz, and your Grandson’s Jazz. That is to say it crosses the span of time with a master’s flick of the wrist.
