90 years young Jimmy Johnson returns to the recording studio for the first time in over a decade. It has been precisely forty years since his Delmark debut ‘Johnson’s Whacks’. Delmark celebrates Jimmy’s homecoming by releasing ‘Every Day of Your Life’, an album comprised of four original songs and Jimmy’s unique take on five other tunes including a solo performance of Jimmy singing and playing piano on the Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland hit ‘Lead Me On’. Two different stellar Chicago bands back Jimmy throughout this album. Johnson was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He has playing professionally in Chicago since 1959 and has worked with Freddy King, Albert King, Magic Sam and Otis Rush among many others. Jimmy has always had an R&B style of blues and he brings it to this new album, his fourth for Delmark.

On the two albums that preceded CLOSER TO YOU, TRAVEL LOG and NUMBER 10, J.J. Cale adopted a more basic musical approach. This album continues the trend. Cale plays a few songs alone (though the overdubbed parts sound remarkably spare), including the title track. “Closer to You” finds him electronically treating his vocals, a technique that surprisingly makes him sound as down-to-earth as ever. The set ends with the hypnotically grooving instrumental “Steve’s Song.” The set is bolstered by two bass players (electric and acoustic), three percussionists (including Jim Keltner), three guitarists (including Cale), two keyboardists (Spooner Oldham and Bill Payne), and three horn players. With the dazzling CLOSER TO YOU, J.J. Cale finds ever-newer surprises in his own remarkable corner of the musical world.

Cale’s live performance style does nothing to quell his reputation for laid-back but pristine guitar playing and reserved “Mississippi John Hurt”-style delivery. A man who truly appreciates the value of restraint, Cale leaves plenty of room for his immaculate guitar lines, even to the point of irony on an ambling version of the previously insistent “Mama Don’t.” This collection, which was gleaned from an assortment of live shows dating from 1990-1996, finds Cale allowing his songs to unfold organically. Of particular note is the lilting “Magnolia.” Less nostalgic than when it first appeared on 1971’s Naturally, this version, recorded at Carnegie Hall in 1996, is crisper and more clipped, replacing the original’s sense of longing with the resigned confidence that permeates this entire set.

On his first studio outing in eight years, the mythical Okie troubadour turns in a solid set of his trademark dusty blues tunes. What is not so typical, as with Travel Log from 1990, is that Cale steeps himself in technology and evokes the moods and frameworks of music that intersect with the blues or stand in opposition to them. The keyboards, drum loops, and horns on this record are as pervasive as the guitars. Needless to say, this requires an attitude adjustment on the part of the listener. This is not to say there aren’t plenty of live musicians here; there are. It’s just that the sheeny beats and clean synth lines feel odd when juxtaposed against the murky lyrics and Cale’s wispy, smoke-weathered voice. His stinging Stratocaster lead lines, spare and razor taut especially when ringed with distortion are plentiful, as are his tight-knit song constructions. Standouts on this set include the new West funk of “New Lover,” the shuffling “New Step,” the skittering “The Problem,” the delightfully rambling “Fancy Dancer,” the burning road-dog rock of “Motormouth,” and the jazzy, gypsy swing in “These Blues.” There are a couple of ballads on the set that are unconventional, as well, in “Homeless,” and in the beautiful “Blues for Mama.” There is even a Latin track on “Rio” that feels more like a merengue than a samba. The album closes with Cale playing a lone banjo on “Another Song,” a mournful Appalachian ballad that feels like it comes from out of the heart of the Dust Bowl, it’s full of ghosts and shadows and aches with the weight and displacement of longing as history. A fine effort.

Singer, composer and keyboardist Kat Vokes began playing music at an early age. She studied classical piano for 12 years before she formally trained as an opera singer at the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music, intensively studying vocal technique under the direction of Marlene Rosen and Timothy LeFebvre. She graduated from Oberlin’s double degree program with a B.A in comparative literature and a B.M in vocal performance in 2013.

Vokes moved to New York City in 2014 with an interest in singing jazz, and has since performed with some of the biggest names in contemporary jazz, including Pete Zimmer, Pablo Menares, Edward Perez, Felix Lecaros, Nitzan Gavrieli and Uri Gurvich. She has sung in festivals across the United States and Europe, including SongFest, Vancouver Early Music, and MSM Summer Voice Festival, among others. In her original compositions, Vokes draws on her eclectic musical background to create a hybrid of sounds, best described as art rock. Her debut record, Clockwork, will be released on Ropeadope Records in May, 2019.

Vokes was raised in Chicago by a Serbian mother and German father and grew up in a musical household; her grandparents on both sides were professional classical musicians. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Composition with a focus on music for film and multimedia at New York University.

It’s been three and a half years since the Haiti-born and Montreal-based dance producer Kaytranada released 99.9%, his lush, bubbly, and guest-heavy debut album. In the time since then, Kaytranada has released plenty of one-off singles and collaborations, but he hasn’t shown any interest in making another LP. 99.9% proved conclusively that Kaytranada’s whole style could work brilliantly at album length, so it’s great to learn that he’s got another new full-length coming out. We won’t have to wait long for it.

This Friday, Kaytranada will release his sophomore album BUBBA. Kaytranada announced the album by playing Amazon’s Intersect Festival in Las Vegas this past weekend. Today, we get the confirmation. The new album, like 99.9%, will feature plenty of collaborations. This time around, Kaytranada will feature songs with guests like Pharrell Williams, Tinashe, GoldLink, Estelle, Mick Jenkins, and Teedra Moses. And on the first single, he teams up with the great young R&B singer Kali Uchis.

On “10%,” Kaytranada supplies a percolating, organic house track. It’s full of rippling congas and ’80s synth-funk bleeps, but they’re welded to a huge bassline and an absolutely merciless thump of a beat. Over that beat, Kali Uchis breathes softly about lost love.

In 2016, Louis Kevin Celestin, aka Kaytranada, stepped out from behind the sound booth to make his debut solo album, a bold move considering albums made by beatmakers can often become clunky collages of disparate singles with no real artistic unity. Not the case for the excellent 99.9%, for which the Quebecer with Haitian origins joined forces with Craig David, BadBadNotGood, Phonte, Syd from The Internet, Anderson .Paak, AlunaGeorge, GoldLink, Vic Mensa, Karriem Riggins and the Swedes from Little Dragon. Three years later, and his second album also brings out the big guns, this time featuring Kali Uchis, Pharrell Williams, Tinashe, Mick Jenkins, Charlotte Day Wilson, Estelle, GoldLink, SiR, Iman Omari, Masego, VanJess, Eight9Fly, Ari PenSmith, Durand Bernarr, and Teedra Moses. Once again, the eclectic nature of the varying styles and voices on the album never stop Kaytranada from taking the lead. Bubba has the allure of a groove mixtape centred around a core of house and soul, all while touching on a plethora of other styles along the way (indie R&B, smooth hip-hop, chillwave, funky pop, light downtempo). The Canadian, like many of his counterparts of the same generation, consistently manages to deliver an unstoppable and individual beat that allows the featured vocals to blend in perfectly with it. This technique is best exemplified on 10% with Kali Uchis, a banger that exhibits the power of a catchy melody without having to reinvent the wheel. Addictive. – Marc Zisman

Legendary Crowbar frontman Kirk Windstein goes solo on Dream In Motion. Making his solo debut a whopping 29 years after his first album with Crowbar, New Orleans sludge legend Kirk Windstein remains a force to be reckoned with, even when standing alone. Like fellow riff overlord Scott ‘Wino’ Weinrich (Saint Vitus, The Obsessed), releasing a record under his own name has led Kirk to dial back the heaviness in favour of melody and reflection.

There’s nothing acoustic or folky about Dream In Motion, however, just a stripping back of his sound to accommodate a more graceful side to his songwriting. His vocals have never sounded so broodingly soulful before, and while his guitar playing still evokes a certain Sabbathian tradition, it’s that band’s more serene moments which are recalled on moments like the fantastic title-track.

Whether expressed in the slow burn of The World You Know, the bittersweet lament of Necropolis, or the album’s one crushingly heavy groove on Toxic, Kirk’s mastery of downbeat dynamics shines through the gloom on this powerful trip.

Las Cobras – Selva (2020)

Emerging out of the small Uruguayan city of Canelones, in 2017 a new band named Las Cobras released their debut recordings – a 9-track album called ‘Temporal’ – and instantly became a name on the tongues of those tapped into the trans-Atlantic psychedelic underground. A couple of years on and the duo comprised of Leandro Rebellato and Sofía Aguerre are now gearing up to release their highly-anticipated sophomore album ‘Selva’ (translating from Spanish to ‘Jungle’.) Released once again on London-based label Fuzz Club, the album is due out January 10th.

On their debut, Las Cobras magnificently fused together a cocktail of proto-punk and murky shoegaze with traces of afrobeat and Tropicalia, but throughout ‘Selva’ the band can be found taking all of those elements and cranking them up to 11. Nestled in-between the swirling, ethereal noise of the closing tracks (‘Voices’ and ‘The Color Of Dawn’), there are far darker and distorted moments like ‘Down Low’ with it’s mechanical drum-machine and gloomy neo-psych guitars, then the menacing ‘Evil In Your Eyes’ which is driven by a nasty fuzzed-out bassline and the dual vocals of Leandro and Sofia – both gravelly and entrancing, respectively.

For all of those more sinister moments, though, that’s not to say the sounds of their native Latin America don’t still course through the record. ‘Lo Hacemos Mal’ and ‘Llamarás Mi Nombre’ are meandering psychedelic jams dripping with the sounds of their homeland. And, charting a similar path to other globally-attuned psych-heads like Khruangbin and Goat, title-track ‘Selva’ – made in collaboration with Gioele Valenti of label-mates JuJu (and previously Lay Llamas) – is a lysergic treat on the senses combining dub-like rhythms, wah-wah guitars and organs that could have plucked off a long-lost Ethio-jazz deep cut.

After the release of ‘Temporal’ the pair took some time out of writing and got a live band together and started playing around Uruguay, Chile and Peru. Upon their return they began to work on the album’s much-anticipated follow-up and – partially due to facing a particularly difficult creative block – they decided they were fed up of writing and recording in their room, as was the case the first time around, and would not only find, but build, a new place to create in. “Here in Canelones there are no rehearsal rooms and we really needed a place to make as much noise as possible. Dario, our bassist, works as a builder so he built a place with his own hands.”

With this new space to use as they please, and with a live band in tow who also ended up becoming much involved in the songwriting, the result is something far more multifaceted and spontaneous than their previous work: “We tend to become a slave to thing we’re doing. We get lost in it. We just go wherever the process takes us.” And, doing what they do best, it seems that that process can take you on a journey to anywhere from a Latin American jazz bar to a British club venue circa the era of Spacemen 3 and Primal Scream, or even perhaps a night spent listening to some nihilistic noise at New York City’s notorious CBGB.

Laumė – Waterbirth (2020)

On January 17th, the synth-pop project Laumė (rhymes with Pflaum, FKA as MADEIRA) will deliver the aptly-titled new LP, Waterbirth, by way of Carpark Records, finally sharing her most lyrically complex and musically infectious body of work to date. The New Zealand-born songwriter and former Yumi Zouma frontwoman and co-founder, Kim Pflaum, worked with French producer Rude Jude to craft a 13-track LP that broadens the scope of Laumė. The irresistibly vibrant and funky sounds of each instrumental are inspired by visionary pop artists like Sade, Kate Bush, and Grimes, but sit in stark contrast with the ideas explored in Pflaum’s writing.
