Jazz pianist Monika Herzig has toured internationally as a bandleader, pianist, author, and jazz advocate. The songs on this album include original compositions by Herzig, as well as arrangements of traditional tunes and current hits. Along with Herzig, an all-star ensemble performs on these works, including Leni Stern, Mayra Casales, Jane Bunnett, Arianna Fanning, Jennifer Vincent, Reut Regev, Jamie Baum, Lakecia Benjamin, and Linda Oh.

The journey has begun – global female jazz musicians are taking the lead in “The Whole World in Her Hands”. The project includes recordings, a documentary, a song bportraits_675_RTook, and more. It’s a privilege to collaborate with these fantastic musicians – can you name them?

Welcome to the Monkey House. This acclaimed project is the brainchild of singer/songwriter/arranger/producer Don Breithaupt, and, nearly 25 years into its career, Monkey House has recorded its strongest work yet.

Left, the fifth Monkey House album, is the follow-up to the 2012 album Headquarters. Moons is the sound of a group totally at ease with itself and the music it wants to create. This is the consistently compelling and charming third album from Myriad3, an eclectic jazz-rooted trio comprising skilled composers and instrumentalists having a blast making music together.

Five years of intensive work have paid off in the forging of a deep personal and creative empathy between pianist Chris Donnelly, bassist Dan Fortin, and drummer Ernesto Cervini. As a result, their compositions are explored intuitively, not intellectually. Donnelly explains that “when we get together to rehearse, we just brainstorm and play.”

Out of these spontaneous beginnings, the carefully crafted and road-tested compositions on Moons gradually emerged. In the fiercely democratic Myriad3, each member brings material to the group that is then collectively hammered (or caressed) into shape.

Adding to the comfort level audible on Moons is the fact it was recorded with the same team of producer Peter Cardinali and engineer John ‘Beetle’ Bailey featured on the first two Myriad 3 albums, 2012’s Tell and 2014’s The Where. This album was recorded at Toronto’s elite Noble Street Studios. Over the course of last summer and then with European and Japanese shows in November, Myriad3 gave these new compositions a good workout in performance, prior to bringing them into the studio.

Comparing Moons to the two earlier albums, Dan notes that “the material here is pretty different, and I’d say more thoroughly composed than The Where. I believe we have evolved with each album.” Chris concurs, adding that “Tell is rather a live off the floor record, with The Where being more of a transition to where we are now with Moons.”

Adding a refreshing variety to Myriad3’s material is the fact all three members have different compositional methods. Fortin explains that “we all write with our own distinctive style but we’re very much informed by the others. I write a very different kind of song for this band compared to other projects, and Chris and Ernesto’s songwriting is a real influence on me.”

The concise tunes on Moons take the listener on an intriguing journey. “There are some tunes on here I call slow burns, with things changing slowly and gradually,” says Ernesto. “Stoner,” for instance, is gently meditative as befits the title, but with plenty of intriguing subtle shifts, while Cervini’s title track composition is soothingly tranquil.

Already a crowd favourite, “Skeleton Key” has an insistent yet melodic feel, while “Brother Dom” and “Sketch 8” are more dramatic and assertive in tone. The one cover here, “Counter of the Cumulus” is by electronic artist Disasterpeace, and its choice reflects the freshly contemporary and cutting-edge outlook of Myriad3.

A dynamic act in performance, Myriad3 have successfully toured Canada, the US, and Europe multiple times and are making inroads in Japan and Asia. Their Canadian profile was boosted in 2015 when The Where was nominated for a Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy).

Free and nomadic, Naïssam Jalal plays with everyone and plays with all musical categories. From jazz to rap, from traditional music to contemporary crossbreeding, she performs with many talented musicians from all walks of life. After having created the duo Noun Ya with the oudist and guitarist Yann Pittard (with whom she recorded the album Aux resistances in 2009), then participated in the Jasmin project of double bass player Hubert Dupont in tribute to the “Jasmin Revolution” (superb album in 2013), it is quite logical that the flautist created in 2011 a set in his image, the aptly named Naïssam Jalal & Rhythms of Resistance. – Of great richness, with finesse and subtlety, the compositions of Naïssam Jalal are enriched by the ecumenical contribution of the members of his quintet. Written passages, oral tradition and improvisation intermingle and re-emerge in a kaleidoscope making influence shine like a hymn to living together. ‘Naïssam Jalal is an intrepid who plays with the biggest of the jazz and hiphop scene. With the cosmopolitan Rhythms of Resistance ensemble, his music carries the colors and scents of India, Africa, and the Orient. Pulses of urgency and silences of introspection embody the idea of lively and fiery resistance.

A striking mix of radical and traditional, raw emotion and literate expression, hip-hop and vocal pop, Nellie McKay’s Get Away from Me is the kind of feverishly inventive, sprawling album that only comes from young artists. Though it could’ve easily fit onto a single CD, it’s a double-disc set designed to reclaim the feeling of flipping over a record; the back cover proclaims that McKay “is a proud member of PETA.” While McKay’s age (21 at the time of the album’s release) and sound make comparisons to Fiona Apple, Nelly Furtado, and Norah Jones easy — she even named her album Get Away from Me as a preemptive strike against it being lumped in with Jones’ Come Away with Me — McKay is a more esoteric and hyperactively creative artist. She seems determined to prove how smart and wide-ranging she is on the album, and for the most part, she carries it off. Juxtaposing songs like the swoony torch song to New York, “Manhattan Avenue,” and “Sari,” a rap song about everything that gets on McKay’s nerves (including McKay herself), certainly demonstrates the extremes of her music. However, these rapid-fire stylistic shifts and the sheer amount of information that McKay puts in her songs sometimes makes the album more dizzying than dazzling. But Get Away from Me succeeds, sometimes in spite of itself, as a musical document of all of the contradictions of a 19-year-old young woman with more than half a brain in her head. Some of McKay’s songs deal with fairly typical themes like coming to terms with womanhood, sexuality, and relationships, but McKay attempts to cover as much lyrical ground as she does musical territory, with mixed results. On “Work Song,” it sounds like McKay has heard how soul-sucking a nine-to-five can be, but it doesn’t have the ring of truth that some of her other songs do. “Ding Dong,” on the other hand, deals with depression in a surprisingly sprightly way, and the similarly witty “Clonie” turns human cloning into a story about self-obsession. The traditional feel of McKay’s songwriting style and voice and her subversive lyrics often give Get Away from Me the feel of being the soundtrack to some long-lost feminist musical. “It’s a Pose” and “Won’t U Please B Nice” (sample lyric: “If we part I’ll eat your heart”) apply McKay’s sharp wit to men and love; “I Wanna Get Married” casts a languidly scornful eye on traditional notions of marriage. These songs, along with the equally charming album opener, “David,” and closer, “Really,” have a lighter touch that avoids the clever-cleverness that drags down some of McKay’s work, but is still miles away from the mild-mannered coffee-table jazz she loathes. Get Away from Me is an exciting debut that could become a cult favorite among pissed-off girl-women of McKay’s age; if she can focus her creative energy without sacrificing any of the bite of her debut, she’ll become an even more impressive talent. – Heather Phares

“Until it all completely dissolves”: in conversation with the Oberon Trio An interview by Friederike Westerhaus “Duality” is the title of your new album. In your trio lineup, are you confronted with duality on a basic level?

Jonathan Aner: All the time! A piano trio combines two different instrumental families: this is already something “dual”. We even ask ourselves how the piano can form a unity with string instruments at all! But piano trio repertoire shows that it is possible. The combination is almost magical. Antoaneta Emanuilova: However, when I think of the three of us and our personalities, I find that we do not form a duality. We are three strong, proactive personalities: in our trio each one of us is autonomous, and we make music as equals.

Henja Semmler: Perhaps a sort of duality is nevertheless at work in the very fact that the trio forms a unity, on the one hand, but is made up of three different personalities on the other. Of course we find it important to work together until we become homogeneous.

Ola Gjeilo presents a stunning collection of brand new original works for solo piano, composed and performed by Gjeilo himself.

An intimate and meditative collection of peaceful piano music, inspired by Gjeilo’s experience of the Night in the place he calls home, New York City.

One single to be released every month from August, with the full album release to follow in January 2020.

These brand new short tracks are perfect for targeting easy-listening, calm, relaxing and sleep playlists.

Best known as a composer of choral and instrumental music, Ola Gjeilo frequently performs on his recordings as an accompanist. However, for this 2020 Decca album, Gjeilo is the soloist, playing piano on all 18 tracks, and the character of Night is one of simple tonal melodies and quiet atmosphere. A song impulse runs throughout the album, at times making this collection seem rather in need of lyrics and a vocalist who could bring real expression to the music. As it stands, though, Night lacks the focus that inspired texts could give it, and the bland harmonies, easy arpeggios, and gentle, slowly spun out melodies work against any notions of direction or substance. A quick sample of titles, such as Firefly, Sleepless, Still, City Lights, Night Rain, and so on, give a fair idea of what Gjeilo is trying to achieve. Yet instead of creating a vaguely poetic ambiance, they point to the interchangeability of his titles and music, and his fairly uniform touch and avoidance of bold, dramatic strokes makes this album only suitable as inobtrusive background music. – Blair Sanderson

The Ukrainian soprano Olga Mykytenko has won numerous international awards, including the Grand Prix at the Maria Callas International Singing Contest in Athens. Her extraordinary musicality, solid vocal technique, easy coloraturas, and strong expression allow her to sing major roles, from Iolanta, Mimì, and Nedda to Gilda, Violetta, and Lucia. Engaged for many years as a soloist at the National Opera of Ukraine in Kiev, where she made her debut, Olga has performed in opera houses and concert halls around the world.

For this her debut album for Chandos, she brings her interpretations of many of Verdi’s greatest soprano roles from the stage into the studio. Her programme also spans the majority of Verdi’s operatic output, from Ernani (Elvira) via Macbeth (Lady Macbeth) through to I vespri siciliani (Elena) and of course taking in Violetta (La traviata), among many others, along the way.

Accompanied by her compatriot Kirill Karabits and the thrillingly sympathetic Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, this recital is a vocal and musical tour de force.

Der Schweizer Pianist Oliver Schnyder macht derzeit vielfach von sich reden: als Haydn-Interpret mit der renommierten Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, als großer Beatles-Kenner und -Fan und nun zusammen mit dem Musikkollegium Winterthur unter Douglas Boyd als Interpret der Klavierkonzerte von Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.

Although Beethoven composed sonatas “for piano and violin,” following Mozart’s example, he did not intend to give prominence to one instrument or another.

Both performers should be able to display their full range of skills as true chamber music partners, so a perfect balance could be reached.

The practice of composing for two keyboard instruments, very common in the illustrious Bach family, naturally achieved its apotheosis with Johann Sebastian, whose three concertos for two harpsichords are performed here by Olivier Fortin and Emmanuel Frankenberg with the Ensemble Masques. These works, particularly the Concerto in C minor, are among the composer’s most admired. They suggest a conception of the concerto specific to Bach: rather than a dialogue between several individual entities, the piece presents a subtle intertwining of melodic lines and blurs the distinction between solo and tutti parts by making them respond to and quote each other, thus illustrating the principle of harmony dear to the composer. Finally, the recording on two harpsichords of the Prelude and Fugue BWV 552, originally composed for organ, is in keeping with the nineteenth-century tradition of transposing Bach’s works with the aim of giving their refined polyphony greater clarity.

The Frenchman Olivier Thiery received his first double bass lessons at home at the age of fifteen by his own father Georges Thiery. In 2008, after Graduating from the ‘Folkwang University of Arts’ in Essen, Germany, Olivier moved to Amsterdam where he was appointed as a permanent member with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
