The German cellist – of Peruvian and Uruguayan descent – Claudio Bohórquez is one of the most in-demand soloists of our times. A student of Pergamentchikow, he quickly took to great competitions like the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition or the Rostropovitch Competition in Paris, where he gave a good account of himself, before seizing first prize at the prestigious Geneva Competition, and above all the Casals First Prize, which launched his international career. It was a career which has seen him perform at the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Gewandhaus of Leipzig, the Vienna Symphonic, the Orchestre de Paris, and of Toulouse, and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. On the piano, Péter Nagy is a famous old hand, who in 1979 won the famous Hungarian Radio Competition, which opened many doors for him. A much sought-after chamber musician, he has been found alongside Miklós Perényi, Leonidas Kavakos, Kim Kashkashian, Nobuko Imai and Ruggiero Ricci. Here, our two friends have chosen a repertoire which is discographically well-represented, it’s true, but no-one will complain about this sumptuous music, sumptuously played. By way of a follow-up, we have three Hungarian Dances adapted by Alfredo Piatti, the “Paganini of the Cello”, according to Liszt, and the beautiful Lied Wie Melodien zieht es mir re-written for cello. It’s a beautiful recording, it must be said.

A year ago, Welsh schoolgirl Elan Catrin Parry made a pledge to Davina McCall on ITV’s life-transforming primetime show, ‘This Time Next Year’, revealing her dream: “I want to make an album.” Fast forward one year, and Elan has signed a major recording deal with Decca Records. The 15-year-old with the purest voice in Wales has now released her debut single Anfonaf Angel, with an album to follow later this year.

The teenage songbird is passionate about continuing the linage of Welsh choral music and keeping the tradition alive, and her debut album will feature both English and Welsh songs. Speaking of the track choices, she says “Musically it’s a mix of folky songs and classic tunes.” She is bilingual and switches naturally between Welsh and English – both on the album and at home. “I’ve always sung in Welsh and it’s something that comes naturally,” she says of her passion for the language. “It’s my generation’s responsibility now to bring it forward to the next generation.”

Charming and modest, Elan (a classic Welsh name pronounced ‘Elle-Ann’) has been competing since the age of four in the traditional Eisteddfod singing contests – a major festival series in Wales, celebrating music and culture and reaching over 150,000 people each year. Last year, Elan was a finalist her Eisteddfod category, which is where she was spotted by Decca executives and later offered a recording contract. Elan’s pure and authentic voice soars so effortlessly that, even in a country renowned for its singing, she is a standout. Her single Anfonaf Angel – or ‘Guardian Angel’ in English –holds a special place in Elan’s heart.

35 years later, this new re-edition finally corrects a terrible injustice. Despite its colossal success at the end of the 1970s, the powerful major distributing ELO in the United States vetoed the double-album project, forcing Jeff Lynne – who had become the band’s uncontested leader −, to change his strategy and tame his ambitions, settling for a reasonably long simple album. Professionals in the business had strong doubts over whether or not this veteran of the 70s could survive the 80s, a decade in which pop music lost all dignity. In other words, he who was one of the few to come close to the Beatles’ excellence and knew how to adapt, with more or less finesse, to the zeitgeist, particularly the disco wave, was in danger of becoming old fashioned… Still, his two previous albums, Discovery (1979) and the ambitious Time (1981) both topped the charts in many countries, as well as his original soundtrack for the disappointing film Xanadu.

Listening to the twenty-five tracks of this revised and corrected version of Secret Messages, it becomes clear that Lynne’s updating work should have earned him more respect. Retaining its idiosyncratic components that allowed for rock’n’roll influences to harmoniously coexist with pronounced classical influences, ELO broadened their skill set while mastering the latest progress in technology. Tracks that had been scattered over singles, compilations, or the following album (Balance Of Power) have finally been re-integrated, with, as a bonus, a handful of previously unreleased songs that are well worth a listen. Only Beatles Forever is missing, the tribute Lynne still doesn’t deign to officially release, despite achieving his dream by producing the Liverpool band during their Anthology period, after collaborating with two of its members (George Harrison and Ringo Starr).  –  Jean-Pierre Sabouret

Robert Schumann rated the string quartet genre very highly, describing it as ‘noble’ and considering it to be one of the most revealing in terms of compositional craftsmanship. Possibly it was the high regard in which he held the genre that for so long stopped him from actually completing a quartet of his own – although he had first seriously considered writing one in 1828, it took almost 15 years before he was ready to fully commit to the idea. Once he had done so, there was no returning: during some hectic summer weeks in 1842, a year which is often called ‘Schumann’s chamber music year’, he completed the three string quartets of his Op. 41, presenting them to his wife Clara on her 23rd birthday in September. In her diary she wrote ‘… they delighted me to the utmost. Everything in them is new, clear, expertly worked out and always idiomatic.’

The Op.41 quartets were to be the only ones from Schumann’s pen, but this is not to suggest that he was dissatisfied with them: in 1847 he wrote to his publisher that he regarded the quartets ‘as my best work from earlier times’. They are here performed by the Norwegian Engegård Quartet, whose latest release on BIS, of quartets by Grieg and Sibelius, has received critical acclaim, for instance in Gramophone: ‘Those seeking the Grieg/Sibelius pairing in modern sound would be hard pressed to find better.’

Schumann gave the three quartets to Clara for her 23rd birthday on 13th September 1842. In the couple’s shared diary she noted: ‘The gift of his three quartets – which he arranged to be performed for me… that very evening… – brought me the greatest joy. About the quartets, all I can say is that they delighted me to the utmost. Everything in them is new, clear, expertly worked out and always idiomatic.’ The fact that Schumann wrote no more string quartets does not indicate that he was dissatisfied with them: in 1847 he wrote to his publisher Härtel that he still regarded the quartets ‘as my best work from earlier times’. And posterity has unanimously shared the view of the eminent Viennese critic Eduard Hanslick that the three Op. 41 quartets ‘are among the all-time jewels of chamber music’. (Horst A Scholtz)

The Galatea Quartet is often touring in South America, where they have a big fan base. During one of the concert tours the idea was born, to transcribe ORIGINAL Argentinian tangos for string quartet. The four musicians could get composers/arrangers such as Pablo Fraguela or Tomás Nine enthusiastic about the idea and it didn’t took long time, until 15 tangos had been transcribed for four string instruments.

The Quartet was founded in 2005 and the members are the siblings Sarah and Julien Kilchenmann, Yuka Tsuboi and Hugo Bollschweiler. Recognition for the quartet came early on with competition prizes in Geneva, Osaka, Bordeaux and Florence. In addition to their competition success, the quartet has performed on tour throughout Europe as well as performances in Japan and India. Their first CD for Sony Classical Switzerland entitled ‘Landscapes’ featuring works of Ernst Bloch has been awarded the „ECHO KLASSIK 2012“. In 2013 they‘ve been given the prize for cultural promotion by the canton Zurich. Their last album for Sony Classical with Debussy’s string quartet has been praised internationally.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Sony Classical

Brahms’s Hungarian Dances were the model for these Slavonic Dances by Antonín Dvorák. Brahms, however, was a German writing in the Gypsy style, while Dvorák composed using elements from his native land. Indeed, much of Dvorák’s work – including his symphonies, string quartets, and operas – has a folklike character. There are two sets of eight dances, and what’s most remarkable about them is their wide range of emotions. Sure, many of them are rollicking and boisterous, but there are also dances that are gracious, some that are nostalgic, and a few that are dripping with gorgeous melancholy. George Szell was actually born in Hungary, but he worked in Prague for a number of years and was a terrific conductor of Czech music. When this recording was made in the early 1960s, many players from the Cleveland Orchestra had emigrated from Central Europe and had this music in their blood; their collective affection is palpable in every note.

“After a slew of second-rate Slavonic Dances recordings, it’s gratifying to once again make acquaintance with this classic Szell reading. Yes, the sound’s a bit harsh and shallow, but boy, you just don’t find performances as exciting and well played as these every day. Szell conducts enthusiastically and enlivens the music with a natural poetic inflection and nuance, while the Cleveland Orchestra takes to these pieces as if bred to play them. Listen to the delightfully bright woodwind tone in Op. 46 Nos. 1, 3, and 4, the sweetly singing strings in Op. 72 No. 1, the dancing lilt of Op. 46 No. 6, or the beautifully sculpted phrasing of Op. 72 No. 8. Plus, Szell is the only conductor on disc to play the opening repeat of Op. 72 No. 7 after the introductory bars (which otherwise is an awkward “restart” that, in the score or no, makes little musical sense). No matter which Slavonic Dances recording you own (even great ones like Kubelik, and Neumann) you simply must not do with out this magnificent Essential Classics release.” (Victor Carr Jr., ClassicsToday)

Part of the wave of great Hungarian conductors who took over American musical life just before and after World War II – the others included Fritz Reiner, Antal Dorati, and Eugene Ormandy – George Szell quickly transformed a middling Midwestern orchestra into one of the nation’s Big Five. His cultivation of the Cleveland Orchestra set an example of discipline and hard work that gradually helped raise the standards of orchestras across America.

“The enduring charm and classic status of this performance rest on the beauty and exactitude of the orchestral playing and the grace and poise with which it unfolds. These features, especially for someone who likes a bright sound and transparent textures, are enriched and enhanced by this remastering far beyond what could be heard through the veil of the original engineering and subsequent cleanups. Mahlerites who find Szell’s account emotionally undernourished should give this version a try to hear rhythmic and harmonic details previously smudged.”

In a pageant of versatility featuring France’s greatest pre-Renaissance composer we enter the world of a grand New Year’s Day wedding feast, full of optimism and vision, tempered by playful emotional hardship, the music teasingly exploring the relationship between both, solemnised with some of Guillaume Dufay’s greatest motets and a festive use of instruments to mark the splendour of the occasion. From this final flourish of the mediaeval era we hear in Dufay’s quintessential Burgundian virtuosity how its musical richness has reached the point when it is about to burst into the new artistry and ideas of the Renaissance.

The Dufay Spectacle celebrates this artist’s genius with an eclectic show of frolicking and passionate robustness, plaintive devotional ardour, now with slow, dark rhythms, now upbeat cascades of melody, and thrilling complex rhythms. As the central chanson rings out its New Year’s promise ce jour de l’an is indeed a day to celebrate.

This young Italian pianist is not only a formidable technician but also an original musical thinker whose performances seek to illuminate, after unconventional ways, the true nature of the repertoire he plays” – Jeffrey Tate (2004).

“In my opinion Giuseppe Albanese is one of the best young Italian pianists who have emerged in recent years. He performed the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto in D minor with me on two occasions, and I was very impressed with his musicianship, pianism and expressive talent. The French printer-publisher Christophe Plantin (1520-1589), who has lived in Antwerp more or less all of his adult life, is not just anyone. He is credited with some two thousand publications, an absolutely astounding number in this era in which everything was done by hand, including the press done page after page, and yet he’s managed to publish a new book approximately every week during his 34-year career, with more than a thousand copies for each—up to eight thousand copies for his Hebraic Bible. His workshop included sixteen hand presses, served by thirty-two printers, twenty typographers, three proofreaders and many servants of all kinds: a true company. Hisopus magnum is a Bible in five languages: Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaean and Syriac. He is also credited with works in the fields of medicine, botany, cartography, anatomy, mathematics, religion of course… And yes, also music! Because he published several major partitions, gathering contemporary sacred works from Jacobus De Kerle, Palestrina, Philippus De Monte, as well as several chansonniers gathering pieces from Andries Pervenage, Claude Le Jeune and colleagues. It is in this incredible stock that the beautiful Ensemble Huelgas drew, alternating between profane and sacred, choral and soloist, a sort of condensed musical Renaissance oscillating between ferocious Catholics (Antwerp was then under Spanish domination, and Philip II was very touchy about religion) and rebellious Protestants.

Recorded in 1958 and released on the Folkways label in 1959, this album introduced American listeners to Joseph Spence’s unique guitar and vocal styles. These field recordings by musicologist Sam Charters capture Spence in a relaxed, expansive mood—only one of the six selections in the set is under five minutes in length. Spence’s guitar style was due in part to the D tuning of his bass string, which produced a lower bass sound. Whereas many critics have called Spence’s vocal style unorthodox, they have found his guitar playing spontaneous and iconic. Some music critics have gone so far as to refer to him as the “Thelonious Monk of folk guitar.”

The vinyl reissue of Music of the Bahamas, Volume 1 includes Sam Charters’ liner notes. This reissue is part of Folkways Records’ 70th anniversary celebration series, revisiting some of the most iconic and influential albums released on the record label.
