Verdi is Andrea Bocelli’s seventh studio album and fourth classical album, of Verdi’s most famous arias, released in 2000. The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta, accompanied Bocelli for the album.

“Following the spiritually flavored Sacred Arias, Andrea Bocelli presents an album of the music of Giuseppe Verdi, covering arias from several operas, leaning heavily on Il Trovatore, La Triviata, and Rigoletto. Supported by the Israel Philharmonic under the direction of Zubin Mehta, Bocelli reprises his role as the crossover-friendly opera tenor, offering his interpretations with capability and grace and warmly embracing the songs with his familiar voice. Opera purists may find Verdi a little off-putting; for example, the album opener, “Di Quella Pira” from Il Trovatore (which serves as the rousing finale to the opera’s third act), sounds out of place as the opening track, and Mehta’s conducting is adequate but lacks passion. However, the album is not without its charms, and the ballads represented here (“La Donna e Mobile” and “Possente Amor” in particular) are wonderfully suited to his notoriously light tenor. Fans of Bocelli’s previous albums should be happy with Verdi, and will hopefully be awakened to the works of one of opera’s great composers.” (Zac Johnson, AMG)

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:07:24 minutes | 1,26 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Booklet, Front Cover | © Decca Music Group Ltd.

The album features some of the most popular opera arias and Neapolitan songs of all time, such as Nessun Dorma, O Sole Mio and la Donna è Mobile.

HighResAudio reissue of 1995 & third album by the talented singer with new cover art and the bonus track ‘Adeste Fidelis’. 16tracks total. The album is a collection of opera arias and Neapolitan traditional songs interpreted by Bocelli, who is accompanied here by the Symphonic Orchestra of Moscow Radio, conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev. A Sugar release.

“Andrea Bocelli’s hugely popular album, Romanza, showed him at his best – passionately singing songs that had the kind of pop-vocal arrangements that made the most of his emotive, if not entirely rich, voice. Immensely popular around the world more because of the romantic aura that surrounds him than his vocal ability, Bocelli manages to seduce the listener into thinking that he or she is listening to a great opera singer, even if his performances taken by themselves prove otherwise. That is why Viaggio Italiano is not a great album, and also why it doesn’t matter. Bocelli begins the album with such iconic opera arias that most of the people who buy his records will focus on the beauty of the songs themselves, rather than his execution of them. By the time he gets to the second half of the album, where he sings the Italian folk songs that are a little more in his league, the listener has already been hooked. Throughout the album, the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra provides subdued accompaniment that draws little attention to itself, allowing Bocelli, and the legend that surrounds him, to shine.” (Stacia Proefrock, AMG)

The Goldberg Variations, or – to use the original title – ‘Aria with diverse variations’ counts as a milestone in Western music history. With good reason: the huge work and its highly systematic structure demonstrate with utmost clarity Bach’s immense skill as a composer. Books and treatises have been written to analyse how it is constructed, amazing both musicologists and mathematicians. But as the Danish accordionist Andreas Borregaard writes in his own liner notes to this disc: ‘the Goldberg Variations are so much more than a gigantic, sounding sudoku. Each variation is an expressive universe unto itself, and the music passes through almost every corner of the human spectrum of emotions.’

Originally written for the harpsichord, the work has become part of the piano repertoire, but the emotional range that Borregaard emphasizes is perhaps brought out even more clearly when it is performed, as here, on the accordion. The inherent nostalgia of the Aria is more poignant than ever, the gigue in Variation 7 has the swagger of sailors on shore leave, and the introspection of Variation 15 is almost hypnotic.

To the extent that he is remembered at all, the Dresden-born August Alexander Klengel (1783–1852) retains a toe-hold in music history thanks to a monumental set of 48 canon and fugues. But Klengel was an important early-Romantic composer and celebrated piano virtuoso, with a reputation that stretched from St Petersburg to London. This first recording of his piano and chamber music reveals a personality with a strong lyrical impulse, somewhere between Field, Mendelssohn and Chopin, all three of whom he knew personally. Founded in 2016, Trio Klengel is named after August Klengel with the purpose of promoting his works. The ensemble decided to continue the work of the original Klengel Trio, founded in 1912. This trio consisted of the three daughters of the composer Julius Klengel, a relative of August Klengel. Just like the first Klengel Trio, this ensemble is also dedicated to promoting chamber music of long-forgotten composers and their works through concerts and recording projects.

Considered to be one of the great Nordic symphonies of its time, Wilhelm Stenhammar’s Symphony No. 2 in G minor was a long time in the making. Stenhammar the conductor and pianist was a leading figure in the musical life of Sweden and Scandinavia, but in his role as composer he struggled with self-doubt, feeling that his knowledge of musical theory was insufficient. In 1910 he decided to address this perceived shortcoming, and began an intensive study of counterpoint which included setting himself several thousand assignments over the following decade. At the same time, between 1911 and 1915, Stenhammar composed his G minor symphony, and against this background it is hardly surprising that it displays his preoccupation with counterpoint, its final movement a grandiose double fugue.

If the symphony is one of Stenhammar’s most celebrated works, his music for Strindberg’s A Dream Play is one of the least-known. It was composed for a production of Strindberg’s existential drama in 1916, a year after the completion of the Symphony. Rarely performed after that, the music was arranged into a concert version in 1970 by Hilding Rosenberg. Christian Lindberg and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra have previously recorded Stenhammar’s Serenade to critical acclaim: the disc was named Disc of the Week on Danish Radio, received a recommendation on German website Klassik-Heute and was selected Recording of the Month on MusicWeb-International.

Music has always been omnipresent in Naples. In the city’s opera houses, theatres and conservatories, it has found expression in a multitude of styles and genres, while also playing an important role in Naples’s innumerable salons and in the palazzi where the local clergy foregathered with music-loving patrons and other champions of the arts. Vocal and instrumental music was integral to most of the ceremonies and events in public life in every social stratum. Moreover, the outstanding reputation of the city’s conservatories, most of which had been established as orphanages in the 16th century, attracted only the most gifted students, laying the foundations for Naples’s exceptional reputation at this time.

One of the supreme musical geniuses and most loved composers of all time, Mozart wrote prolifically and excelled in every genre to which he turned his hand. His symphonies are among his greatest achievements, a consummate blend of dazzling invention and tender lyricism. Karl Böhm was one of the first conductors to set down on record his complete Mozart symphony cycle. His emphasis on rhythmic, textural and structural clarity are hallmarks of a Mozart style unaffected by fashion. Now Deutsche Grammophon collects his recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker of the Mozart Symphonies. The HiRes edition “Karl Böhm – The Symphonies” contains selected symphonies by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms, which the great Austrian conductor recorded between 1959 and 1977 with the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic.

Warner Classics is honouring Bernstein with live recordings, made in Rome in February 2018, of his three symphonies and his Prelude, Fugue and Riffs. Sir Antonio Pappano conducts the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the soloists are pianist Beatrice Rana, mezzo-soprano Marie-Nicole Lemieux, soprano Nadine Sierra and narrator Dame Josephine Barstow. Bernstein, who died in 1990, was one of the defining forces in 20th-century music, not only as the first great American-born conductor and as a charismatic communicator, but as a composer who represents the cultural ‘melting pot’ of the USA.

His three symphonies are: No 1, ‘Jeremiah’, premiered in 1944; No 2, ‘The Age of Anxiety’ (1949) and No 3, ‘Kaddish’ (1963). They show Bernstein assimilating a diversity of influences, such as the composers Mahler, Shostakovich and Aaron Copland (Bernstein’s American-born mentor), jazz and Latin music (idioms which are driving forces in West Side Story, his all-conquering Broadway musical of 1961), his Jewish heritage.

Bernstein had a long association with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. He first conducted the orchestra in 1948 and from 1983 to 1990 served as its Honorary President. Sir Antonio Pappano, who has been music director of the Roman ensemble since 2005, was born in England but spent his formative years in the USA. At the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts he watched Bernstein teaching young conductors and later, in the mid-1980s, met the great maestro, who was interviewing potential musical assistants for a recording project with the Accademia di Santa Cecilia.

“I find these symphonies revelatory in the true sense of the word,” says Pappano. “They are hugely emotive and personal … At heart, Lenny was filled with the desire for the brotherhood of man to be something real and concrete … As a great Renaissance man, he was trying to make the world good.”

“Still not well known, these works are widely contrasting in style and far from the Bernstein of West Side Story…[Kaddish is] where Pappano and his top-notch orchestra are particularly successful. With Josephine Barstow as narrator and a crisp, committed performance from the musicians, the work loses that old tendency to embarrass, and gains a natural dignity and joy. This is an invaluable set for anyone wanting to know more of Bernstein’s concert works.” (The Observer)

After completing their 2010 LP, Blue Sky, Raging Sun (Joyful Noise Recordings), the members of Berry dispersed from Chicago, spreading across the country from Arizona to New York City. Meeting weekly by phone and yearly in person for a sort of shared “musical vacation,” Berry has never stopped pursuing the unique musical vision that has bound them together for more than fifteen years.

Berry’s latest LP, Everything, Compromised, emerged from one of these vacations three years ago, when they gathered in a dusty pole barn out in the Kansas countryside. Live tracks were written and recorded in just four days, but the album really only began to take shape when Lemon handed over production reins to Paul Klimson, who has worked modestly alongside John Legend, Erykah Badu, and Kirk Douglas of The Roots. The result is an eclectic mix of carefully structured songs, where pop melodies soar over shifting time signatures, dissonant harmonies, and a heavier-than-usual dose of diminished-seventh chords. Lemon’s off kilter lyrics find meaning as they juxtapose such disparate characters as literary heros like Henry David Thoreau with pop culture villains like Martin Shkreli.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 39:28 minutes | 808 MB | Genre: Blues

The self-produced Out Of The Blues finds national treasure Boz Scaggs applying his iconic voice and gritty guitar skills to a set of vintage classics as well as four originals. For the occasion, the legendary singer/songwriter/guitarist assembled a star-studded studio band including such prestigious players as guitarists Doyle Bramhall II, Ray Parker Jr. and Charlie Sexton, bassist Willie Weeks, drummer Jim Keltner and keyboardist Jim Cox, as well as longtime friend Jack Walroth on guitar, harmonica and percussion.

After Memphis in 2013 and A Fool To Care in 2015, Boz Scaggs concludes his trilogy on American roots music with Out of the Blues. Properly charged with southern blues and soul, here is a preview of the music that has inspired him throughout his career. With − at his side − talents such as Ray Parker, Jr. and Arc Angels’ leaders, Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II, as well as Willie Weeks (bass), Jim Keltner (drums) and Jim Cox (keyboards). Ideal conditions to bring old blues back to life… Over the nine tracks, four were composed by Jack ‘Applejack’ Walroth, Scaggs’ former teammate, most notably on Memphis. For the rest, the album features Don Robey’s I’ve Just Got To Forget You, Neil Young’s On The Beach, and Jimmy Read’s Down In Virginia. Boz Scaggs seems to be particularly at ease when it comes to soak in an entire era. Sixties soul is indeed a part of Those Lies, but quite modern at the same time. Some noticeable similarities with James Hunter at times, but the American singer sets himself apart thanks to his unique voice, cementing his status as a bluesman. Gritty guitars and muddy blues, the harmonica riffs unwearyingly travel back and forth America.  – Clara Bismuth

The time when performers and composers had personal mottoes – Wieniawski’s “Il faut risquer” (I must risk it), Joachim’s “Frei aber einsam” (Free but lonely), Brahms’ “Frei aber froh” (Free but happy) – is long since past, but still such mottoes are more than just biographical curiosities: there are at least two very well-recognized musical encryptions of those mottoes. Schumann, Albert Dietrich, and Brahms put their collective talents together to compose the “F-A-E” Sonata as a gift for Joachim, and, when Brahms came up with his own motto, he decided to use the pitches of its initials – F-A-F – as the motto theme for his Symphony No. 3 in F, Op. 90.

Brahms composed the Symphony No. 3 in the summer of 1883 after a five year long sabbatical from symphonic work. It is often considered the other three symphonies’ “poor sister” – a prominent feature, yes, on any symphonic season calendar, but not quite the same stunning pinnacle of symphonic achievement that each of the other three is. How wrong that notion is! If mass consumption has less taste for the Third Symphony’s odd mix of overt heroism and dense formal logic than it has for the apparently more sensuous, even voluptuous, music of the second or fourth symphonies, or the Beethovenian spiritual journey of the First Symphony’s outer movements, that is hardly evidence of a shortcoming on the composer’s part. And indeed there is something heroic about the Symphony No. 3, enough to prompt Hans Richter, who conducted the premiere of the piece, to suggest that Brahms give it the subtitle “Eroica” (a suggestion that Brahms didn’t take). It is a heroism utterly unlike the kind brought to mind by the composer of the actual “Eroica” Symphony, however. How could a symphony that begins with a musical manifestation of the bittersweet words “free but happy” approach Beethoven’s Third or Fifth in raw grittiness?

The symphony is in four movements: Allegro con brio, Andante, Poco allegretto, and Allegro. The winds open the first movement with a three-chord rendition of F-A-F (actually A flat), after which a tempestuous first theme, also outlining F-A-F, takes over. The second theme is as beautiful a melody, pulsating with warmth, as one might hope for.

The melody of the Andante is rather like that of the First Symphony’s third movement, and not just because it is first given by a clarinet; it also has the same initial rhythm and the same gentle intervallic circle. Poco allegretto is hardly a scherzo; it is almost mournful. The finale rekindles some of the first movement’s dramatic fire. The quiet, unison theme of the opening is like the long-lost twin of the quiet, unison theme at the opening of the Second Symphony’s finale, except that what is in the Second Symphony a joyous occasion is in the Third Symphony intense and shadowed. The F-A-F motto appears again in the final bars, this time winding downward towards the final serene F major chord by way of luxurious string tremolandos. (Blair Johnston, AMG)

The lute, the archlute and the theorbo obviously belong to the world of Renaissance and to the first Baroque; but lutenist Bruno Helstroffer offers here to his theorbo, in addition to pieces from these periods, some strange incursions into the 20th Century: pieces that he composed himself (or almost from his written-down improvisation, probably), of which one or the other with a sung line or the recitation of a poem, as well as a Gnossienne from Satie which fantastically lends itself to the sound of the theorbo, conferring to this original program a kind of Oriental flavor that is quite spectacular. With Bach, Helstroffer indulges in a harmonic and rhythmic digression on the Menuet in Bach’s First Cello Suite, shifting the supports and the lines in order to only slightly evoke the original from the Cantor. Finally, you will notice some pieces from Helstroffer who is borrowing from India, or from West Africa with the kora, itself a traditional lute-harp, whose sounds are magically evoked by the theorbo. This is one of those unclassifiable and multicultural albums, blending all the eras and geographical landscapes, which will duly intrigue the lovers of rarities, and which has now inscribed the theorbo as an instrument of the modern repertoire.

Circles Around The Sun explore new horizons on the band’s upcoming double album, LET IT WANDER. It’s the first new music from the quartet since their acclaimed 2015 debut, Interludes For The Dead.

Originally, Circles Around the Sun (CATS) was only supposed to record some Grateful Dead-influenced instrumentals to be played during the set breaks at the Dead’s “Fare Thee Well” concerts. But the response was so positive, and the band was having so much fun making music together, that they all agreed to keep it going.

LET IT WANDER signals a new beginning for the band as they move beyond their original musical mandate of evoking the spirit of the Dead and fully embrace their own personality. “More than anything, what you hear on this album is a band growing into its own sound,” Casal says.

The songs on LET IT WANDER are focused and filled with imaginative musical turns. Horne and Levy form a veritable groove machine that knows intuitively when to tighten up and when to stretch out. They expand and collapse the rhythmic pocket around Casal and MacDougall, who pass melodies back and forth in an elaborate game of musical tag as they take turns adding color and shade from a seemingly endless kaleidoscope of cosmic sounds.

One of the album’s highlights, “One For Chuck” features a surprising cameo by Chuck D. The charismatic leader of the legendary hip-hop pioneers Public Enemy happened to stop by the studio while the band was listening to a song they’d just recorded. He liked the music, so the band asked him to record an intro. He obliged, and they dedicated the song to him.
