Remembered by the legendary Polish-American conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski as the author of the most sensitive and beautiful Chopin’s interpretations, Kevin’s new album features several Mazurkas, a Polish national dance and the Sonata No. 3.

In 1990, Kevin Kenner won the Chopin Competition and bronze medal in the Tchaikovsky Competition, which was the first time an American won prizes in both. Known for his interpretations of Chopin, having studied with Polish pianist Krzysztof Brzuza and in Poland with Ludwik Stefanski, then with Leon Fleischer at the Peabody. Legendary Polish-American conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski said Kenner’s Chopin interpretations are the most sensitive and beautiful he remembered. Recording features several Mazurkas, a Polish national dance. Sonata No.3 is considered to be extremely technically challenging, and despite being derided by contemporaries such as Liszt and D’Indy, it soon gained in popularity which has endured to this day.

Paier and Valcic’s music is always sensual and rich in images, and this opulence of colours and pictures is also at the heart of what “Cinema Scenes” is about: they let their impressions of films flow freely as music, but above all the two musicians give expression to their own visual ideas.

“So beautiful, it brought tears to the eyes” ran the headline of a live review of Klaus Paier and Asja Valcic in Munich’s respected Süddeutsche Zeitung. And London’s The Observer remarked, “their pieces evolve with such vigour and clarity… the music sounds like the product of one mind rather than two… its charm is all its own”.

Paier and Valcic’s music is always sensual and rich in images, and this opulence of colours and pictures is also at the heart of what “Cinema Scenes” is about: they let their impressions of films flow freely as music, but above all the two musicians give expression to their own visual ideas. This music seems to be just asking to be seen on a bigger canvas, and therefore the duo is augmented. In the quartet format one senses an extra groundedness, but presence of the other voices also brings a fascinating potential for new departures.

Just as films in their unique way are wont to do “Cinema Scenes” does also take us on a journey. It might be just the shortest of trips out into the garden: in “Le Jardin” an irresistible melody sets us dreaming. Or the destination might be out in the wider world: “Safran” has a powerful oriental aura. Or it could be a short roam with dramatic interruptions, such as “Inspired Tale”. Just as in a movie, a broad palette of feelings and thoughts is evoked in this album. “Griet’s Theme” from the movie “The Girl With The Pearl Ear-Ring” brings a combination of confusion, disquiet, and bittersweet sadness – all at ferocious speed. The title track is in four parts, starting with an arrangement of “Doe Eyes”, which was written for “The Bridges of Madison County”, and then driven forward by Paier’s own ideas. It combines everything from nostalgic longing and awestruck silence, to angry protest and the joy of triumph.

Everything is dramatized superbly by the four musicians, whether they are doing virtuosic expositions of melodies, incorporating propulsive latin rhythms (in “Hesitation”) or even a full-on jazz hoe-down (in “Griet’s Theme”). There is an overarching dramatic pattern to this album, but each of the individual pieces also leaves its mark, carrying its own tension and excitement – and the thematic connection to the cinema.

That is particularly true of Asja Valcic’s nervy, wildly stop-go piece “Rush” which is full of unexpected escapades, and also of the last piece on the album, “Ricochet”. If the idea of a detective story somehow lands in the listener’s mind, then he or she should hold that thought, because an action plot really does develop in this piece, from its sultry and still beginning as if sweltering under a midday sun, to a speeding-up of the action and right on through to a happy ending.

Not just this piece, the whole of “Cinema Scenes” has a special way of hitting the mark, of showing us the movies at their absolute best.

Few works in the entire literature of orchestral music can match Scheherazade for brilliance, appeal or vividness of instrumental coloring. But then, few composers have possessed the wizardry to orchestrate music as did Rimsky-Korsakov. And until now, it has been difficult to reproduce the full spectrum of the composer’s palette on records. Thanks to Everest’s advanced recording techniques on 35 mm magnetic film, every subtle oriental shading, every overtone of this sumptuous symphonic suite can be enjoyed with startling realism in the home. …

Since we were on the subject of Everest and Sir Eugene Goosens, I wanted to bring another early Everest recording to your attention. This was Everest’s forth release from 1958, and like it’s Corroborree by the same forces, it is a sonic spectacular. In fact the engineers were so pleased with the awesome dynamic range captured on the tape, that a highly unusual decision was made. Rather than limit the dynamics, as they would have to be compressed to fit on a single disc, it was decided to spread the work over three sides, allowing the earth shatteing dynamic range that was present on the master tape to be fully realized on disc. The Rachmaninoff “Symphonic Dances” was selected for Side Four, filling out this two record set. Recommended!

The first release in Valery Gergiev s Rachmaninov symphony cycle features a magnificent performance of the Symphony No.2, recorded in September 2008 at the Barbican. This vast work was composed when Rachmaninov was at the pinnacle of his careers as composer, pianist and conductor. Filled with emotion and brimming with beautiful melodies, it is a masterpiece and the epitome of the Romantic symphony. The recording features the complete version of the symphony and will be followed in future years by the first and third symphonies as well as the Symphonic Dances.

“Gergiev has a feel for the romantic urgency of the music as well as its lyrical impulse and the LSO responds as though its life depended on it.” (Gramophone Magazine)

“You don’t have to be Russian to play this symphony convincingly, but just as certainly it can’t hurt. It doesn’t hurt Gergiev here, and despite the London Symphony Orchestra being the very model of a modern British orchestra, the members perform with their hearts beating vividly on their sleeves… a no-holds performance.” (Fanfare)

“A wonderful new LSO Live recording.” (Chicago Tribune)

“Pulse and phrasing are always clear and there are no redundant gestures. There’s little sign of Gergiev’s unscripted vocals and his finale is electrifying; not only that, the Brits add a suppleness and bounce to Rachmaninov’s rhythms … Musically and politically controversial he may be, but when he’s at his best – as here – Gergiev is almost unbeatable.” (MusicWeb International)

The Bottom Line Archive Series presents its next release: the once-in-a-lifetime live performance by Lou Reed and Kris Kristofferson at the height of their craft, set for release September 15. Recorded at the legendary Bottom Line club in Greenwich Village, the album presents an evening of music, songwriting and storytelling – intimate, acoustic, historic. The Bottom Line Archive label is distributed via BFD/Red; BFD is a division of Bob Frank Entertainment.

Lou Reed and Kris Kristofferson: In Their Own Words with Vin Scelsa is the only time these two master songwriters performed together. Over the course of one night (2/2/94) with noted radio personality Vin Scelsa leading the conversation, Reed and Kristofferson swap stories and songs. The evening and two-disc set includes Reed performing eight songs including Sweet Jane, Romeo Had Juliet, Legendary Hearts; Kristofferson’s seven include Me and Bobby McGee, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Help Me Make it Through the Night; and each performing a cover (Kristofferson does Bird On A Wire, Reed performs Tracks of My Tears).

This singular meeting – Reed from the jungles of New York City and Kristofferson from the heart of the South – was rock history, says Bottom Line co-founder/curator Allan Pepper. “It was very rare that we could present two giants on the same stage on the same night, especially artists of this caliber and impact. With this release, people who weren’t there that night can experience that special night with these true music legends talking about their process and craft, cracking a few jokes along the way.”

According to the liner notes penned by series producer Gregg Bendian, who performed frequently at The Bottom Line with his band, The Mahavishnu Project, “both artists were much-beloved Bottom Line regulars. Kris played a total of 42 shows at the club, while Lou played no less than 54 shows there. Many will recall that Lou recorded his famous Take No Prisoners live album over the course of five nights at club, in May of 1978. That level of relaxed comfort and spontaneity so evident on this recording is no accident. It’s the sound of artists who indeed feel quite comfortable and at home on the stage of what was clearly their New York venue of choice. The playful banter of camaraderie and mutual admiration between Kris, Lou and Vin heard on this document bears this out beautifully, and the Bottom Line audience can be heard laughing, gasping, chiming in, and hanging on every note.”

This release is the 12th in a planned rollout of titles over the next few years, including classic live performances by Jack Bruce, Ralph Stanley, the Brecker Brothers, Pete Seeger & Roger McGuinn, Harry Chapin and Kenny Rankin, among others.

Bottom Line co-founder/curator Allan Pepper has recordings of more than 1,000 shows from Greenwich Village nightclub, which always booked an eclectic mix of rock, jazz, blues, folk and other forms of music during its 30-year run. Pepper and the label are currently in conversation with representatives from many of the acts.

All music from The Bottom Line Archive was mixed and mastered at The Magic Shop, an award-winning state-of-the-art studio in New York.

‘This music is silent because its audition is internal… Its emotion is secret and does only take a sound shape in its resonances under the huge cold dome of our solitud’. Federico Mompou described this way in his admission speech to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Saint George not only the profound significance of his work titled Silent Music, but also his essential values and the sensitive attitude of both interpreter and listener to submerge in the asceticism that its course proposes. A description which is in line with the author of the verses that stimulated so much sound beauty, the most illustrious of our mystics, Saint John of the Cross, who, in the Prologue to his The Spiritual Canticle, names the explicit music in his verses: silent, because it is calm and peaceful intelligence. Although each book of Mompou s Silent Music is composed on different tempi, the work possesses a united structure; the configuration in four books only responds to its chronological order of composition and not to a formal organization previously designed. Luis Aracama is considered by critics to be one of the most outstanding and eclectic Spanish pianists of his generation. The versatile musician is founder and artistic director of the Festival of Contemporary Music of Ponferrada, and his interest in the music of our time has led him to premiere works of various modern composers, many of which have been written specifically for him.

Though Luke Combs was only 27 upon the release of this debut album, his deep, burly pipes bear the vocal gravitas of someone with a lot more miles in their rearview mirror. And whether the North Carolinian is getting reflective on the slow-rolling title track, digging into a four-on-the-floor country rocker like “When It Rains It Pours,” or playing with pop hooks on “Hurricane,” he leans all the way in for maximum impact.

Luke Howard – Open Heart Story (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 58:25 minutes | 996 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Mercury Classics

Open Heart Story is a contemplative and uplifting journey ranging from intimate solo piano pieces to emotive works for a 23-piece string orchestra interwoven with subtle electronics. It opens with a beautiful piano piece called “Prelude for a Single Voice” – an homage to the composer J.S. Bach whose music continues to inspire Howard. The track “Remembering My Childhood” was influenced by Ryuichi Sakamoto and the Yellow Magic Orchestra – music he used to listen to when he was growing up.

A central piece on the album, “Hymn”, is one of Howard’s personal favourites. It is presented both in its original improvised piano version as well as the string arrangement. The poignant harmonies are built upon a simple meditative pattern allowing the music to ebb and flow – increasing and then decreasing in density.

Open Heart Story follows a natural evolution from Howard’s previous recordings, especially the track “In Praise of Shadows” which is a companion to “A Softer World”, a piece off his 2013 album, Sun, Cloud.

Hailing from Melbourne, Luke Howard is an Australian Music Prize-nominated composer whose music has been described as “absolutely heavenly” (Mary Anne Hobbs, BBC Radio 6 Music) and “an ambient masterclass” (Musos’ Guide).

A pianist since childhood, Howard has scored films and performed with artists as diverse as Lior and Jeff Mills, capturing audiences with contemporary classical arrangements that curl and twist around the boundaries of emotions.

Luke Howard is one of Australia’s foremost practitioners of contemporary classical music. Having already accomplished so much and with more on the horizon, he is set to captivate audiences worldwide with his latest music, Open Heart Story.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 35:58 minutes | 386 MB | Genre: Electronic
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Kscope

Lunatic Soul is Mariusz Duda, the talented creator, singer and multi-instrumentalist behind some of the finest and most captivating progressive music coming from Europe, including his output on UK label Kscope and with Poland’s shooting stars Riverside. Duda is now releasing his sixth studio album, the companion to 2017’s Fractured and the pinnacle of the first decade of Lunatic Soul.

Following on from last year’s material, which covered content about grieving, hope and a fractured society, Under the Fragmented Sky rebuilds Lunatic Soul as we know it, with dark and haunting atmospheres coming to the forefront, taking its name from the lyrics of the 12-minute epic “A Thousand Shards of Heaven” from Fractured. Duda explains “Fractured is not a full picture of the latest Lunatic Soul recordings. These more classical pieces have been waiting for their own time which has now come. “Under the Fragmented Sky” will be both a supplement to “Fractured” and an artistically independent release with its own character and identity.

“It’s a very unexpected and spontaneous release” – says Mariusz Duda – “Initially, I was thinking about a maxi single “A Thousand Shards of Heaven” with a couple of other tracks but the material had evolved so beautifully in the studio that I ended up with 36 minutes of brand new music. It’s a truly enchanting album.

“UTFS” is a music journey with very subtle electronics and vocal experiments, it’s incredibly coherent and much closer to the mood of the earlier Lunatic Soul albums. Thanks to “Under the Fragmented Sky”, the last red album will gain a fuller meaning and the whole Lunatic Soul discography will be enriched with another shade of my music fascinations, which have been suspended somewhere between life and death from the very beginning.”

The album was recorded during the Fractured sessions at Serakos Studio, Warsaw from June 16-17, and finalised December 2017 and February 2018. The final track “Untamed” sees a guest appearance on drums for Wawrzyniec Dramowicz (aka Vaaver). The album was designed and illustrated by Polish artist Jarek Kubicki.
“Duda’s clearly endured, making real art out of his adversity.” (Classic Rock)

“It’s often like the best film music… honours the Pink Floyd branches of the Porcupine Tree” (Prog Magazine)

Whether as a soloist or leader of an ensemble, Lynne Arriale’s artistry and influence are profound and have elevated her stature as a composer, arranger, and performer to a renown shared by few other jazz musicians. ‘Give Us These Days’ is ambitious in its conception and its unbridled sense of wonder. Evolved from the creative genius that foretold her reputation as an extraordinary piano poet and composer, the six original tunes and three arrangements on this album chart a new course for the trio. It leads, ever so gently, to the chambers of the heart, there to reflect upon the precious and ephemeral nature of existence. What emerges is the theme of this album, brilliantly illuminated by the title track: Given the unpredictability and impermanence of life, savor each moment. Her playing on these pieces is powerful, informed by rigorous classical training, prodigious technique, and seemingly boundless creativity.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Booklet, Front Cover | © Naxos

With eighteen works in his repertoire all in all, Carl Ruggles (1876-1971) is far from the most productive of American composers. On the contrary, he was one of the most insolent, grating – in personal terms, you understand – and inflexible composers, in his search for a language which was all his own. Ruggles detested all his peers apart from Charles Ivre, his admiration for whom was reciprocated. And coming in at just fifteen minutes, the Sun-Treader of 1932 is by far his longest work! It’s an intense moment of orchestral concentration, serious, fiery, brutal and fascinating – and yet its bitterness is so lyrical. The Second Concerto for Orchestra (2004) by Steven Stucky (1949-2016) is much more accessible, and it landed its composer a prestigious Pulitzer Prize, following in the footsteps of such predecessors as Ives, Hanson, Copland, Menotti, Barber, Carter, Adams, Reich and many others of the same stripe. The album closes with the Fourth Symphony by John Harbison (born 1938) – another Pulitzer winner, as it happens – which was written in 2003, in a much more generous style, making it surely easier to get into than Ruggles and even than Stucky, while offering many welcome surprises. For sure, America’s recent output deserves much more than the benevolent disdain in which it is held by the intelligentsia of Europe. The National Orchestral Institute of the University of Maryland plays all the pieces here: an ensemble made up of the best students, whose excellent quality is nothing short of stupefying.

Following on from his critically acclaimed Lutosławski programme, the conductor Krzysztof Urbański pursues his collaboration with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester et Alpha. The New World Symphony is a work that has always fascinated Krzysztof Urbański: ‘It was only when I studied Dvořák’s other symphonies that I came to understand the principal characteristic and strength of the Ninth: simplicity. I wanted to dig deeper, and so I examined the manuscript and parts used for the New York premiere. There I discovered things that changed my view of it, like the fact that the first four bars of the third movement shouldn’t be played on the repeat. That gives them a completely different meaning when they recur at the da capo… The coupling, the rare Hero’s Song, shows an entirely different side of Dvořák. The way he transforms the initial four-note motif to evoke so many varied feelings, from joy to tragedy, shows his immense compositional mastery.’ This new album will be released to coincide with the opening of the ElbPhilharmonie hall in Hamburg, where Urbański will be one of the leading figures.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 27:53 minutes | 303 MB | Genre: Electronic
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Phases

Dynamic composer Neil Cowley is set to release ‘Spacebound Tapes’ a four track EP featuring remixes of his Trio’s ‘Spacebound Apes’ album (“A miss- this-at-your-peril release” Drowned In Sound 9/10) by Rival Consoles, Throwing Snow, Christian Löffler and Vessels

‘Spacebound Apes’ was written by Cowley for his trio and long-time bandmates drummer Evan Jenkins and bassist Rex Horan, with contributions from Brian Eno collaborator Leo Abrahams on guitars and FX. A bold exercise in atmosphere and emotion, the album was woven together with some of the most breathtaking, impassioned music that Neil has created. Originally inspired by Arthur C Clarke’s 1956 sci-fi book ‘The City and the Stars’ the album was recorded at Cooper Hall, a studio and cinema set deep in the Somerset countryside with Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001 A Space Odyssey’ running on permanent rotation.

The sci-fi aesthetic is firmly grasped by the four remixers, echoing the theme in their own reinterpretations. The reimagined tracks retain the inventiveness of the originals while exploring progressive but considerate paths. In his version of ‘Weightless’, Erased Tapes signed Rival Consoles feeds off of the electronic songwriter’s critically lauded humanised techno, while rising German musician Christian Löffler brings new dimensions of space and scale to ‘Death To Amygdala’. Houndstooth’s Throwing Snow delights in deconstructing ‘Duty To The Last’ with pulsing energy and Vessels’ take on ‘Echo Nebula’ applies machinic facets to the delicate sounds of the original.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz  | Time – 52:23 minutes | 621 MB | Genre: Alternative

Producer/singer/songwriter Neko Case has won a large and loyal audience for her smoky, sophisticated vocals and the downcast beauty of her music. Now more than 23 years into her musical calling, Case is the consummate career artist–fearless and versatile, with a fierce work ethic and a constant drive to search deeper within herself for creative growth. On June 1st, Anti- will release Neko Case’s ‘Hell On,’ an indelible collection of colorful, enigmatic storytelling that features some of her most daring, through-composed arrangements to date. Produced by Neko with help from Bjorn Yttling (Peter Bjorn & John), ‘Hell On’ is simultaneously the most accessible and most challenging album in a rich and varied career that’s offered plenty of both. Rife with withering self-critique, muted reflection, anthemic affirmation, and her unique poetic sensibility, the 12 tracks of ‘Hell On’ — which features collaborations such as Joey Burns, Beth Ditto, Kelly Hogan, KD Lang, AC Newman, Paul Rigby, Laura Veirs, and more.

In 2016 Neko Case played the trio card with her peers KD Lang and Laura Veirs, for an album that injected her career with much-needed ardour. Two years later, she’s back with a solo album, following The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You, released in 2013. For Hell-On, she reveals herself more than ever, matures and strikes us like thunder! In her compositions, the singer is used to delivering tales and stories that resemble her. But here, Neko Case unveils a much more feminist side. Beyond being a strong woman, she has become a wild character, unpredictable and unleashed, that simply does not hesitate to make love to you… and break a few of your ribs at the same time… A proper obscure and quirky waltz, switching back and forth between alternative country, psychedelic rock and pop ditties. One thing is certain, she’s the one leading the dance! Not forgetting the damage she does with her voice that assimilates every emotion without never losing control. At least that’s an unwavering certainty, as opposed to her compositions that don’t always operate under the verse and chorus structure. But Neko Case also knows when to take risks and get out of her comfort zone, working with unexpected artists like her co-producer Bjorn Yttling, known for his collaborations with Primal Scream and Lykke Li. Hell-On also bears the mark of a tragedy: the burning of her house, from which nothing could be salvaged! Not surprising then to hear a touch of rage in her singing or to witness her lack of fear placing lit-up cigarettes in her hair or lay down in a bed full of snakes in her music videos. A brand-new woman has just emerged from the bowels of the earth and is singing Hell-On!  – Clara Bismuth

For the past two years, Nils Frahm has been building a brand new studio and making music at Funkhaus in Berlin. Out of that time came not only his 7th album, the universally acclaimed All Melody, but a huge amount of additional material, of which Encores 1 is the first offering.

With only twelve out of sixty initial sketches forming All Melody, there was so much more music that needed to be heard. “The idea behind Encores is one we had from before All Melody; to do three releases each with their own distinct musical style and theme, perhaps even as a triple album. But All Melody became larger than itself and took over any initial concepts.” — Nils Frahm

Meant as a companion to All Melody and with The Dane even becoming a live favourite on the current world tour, Encores 1 focuses on an entirely acoustic pallet of sounds with solo piano and harmonium. Perhaps suggesting the story of All Melody is far from over.

“I think the idea of Encores is like musical islands that compliment All Melody” — Nils Frahm
