The Bones of What You Believe is the debut studio album by Scottish electro-pop band CHVRCHES. This deluxe edition features four bonus tracks (two new songs and two remixes) in addition to the studio album itself.
Taking influences from a variety of sources, including Prince, Depeche Mode, and Kate Bush, CHVRCHES creates multi-layered songs that take on life’s highest highs and lowest lows. The Scottish trio has released several singles over the past year leading up to their studio debut (“Recover”, “Lies, “Gun”), and The Bones of What You Believe lives up to the hype that preceded it. Lauren Mayberry’s vocals are emphatic and precise, always channeling the exact feeling that the songs call for. The songs themselves are layered, complex, and yet very accessible.
This is one band that definitely isn’t just a buzz band with a short lifespan. CHVRCHES have launched themselves admirably with this first album, and listeners and critics alike should be able to look forward to future work from this trio.

“Hype bands live and die on the perseverance of that one earworm. But with The Bones Of What You Believe, CHVRCHES have distanced themselves from the flash-in-the-pan acts cluttering the blogosphere. Simply put, they’ve evolved from a hype band to something much more coveted: a great band.”
–Randall Colburn, Consequence of Sound, September 23, 2013
The Bones of What You Believe hits so many high notes with its surprisingly simplistic delivery that it’s impossible not to recommend to even the most jaded of listeners. Yes it is at times sickly sweet, but that’s part of the charm.”

In a not entirely unexpected move, Parlophone will issue David Bowie‘s Welcome To the Blackout (Live London ’78) as a two-CD set in June.
This live album was taken from performances in London in June/July 1978 on Bowie’s Isolar II tour and was mixed by Bowie and David Richards a month after the tour ended, in January 1979.
The recordings were unreleased until Record Store Day 2018, when this was issued as a triple vinyl package and it became the best-selling release from that day.
The two-CD edition of Welcome To the Blackout will be issued on 29 June 2018. On the same date, a red vinyl edition of the Christiane F. soundtrack will be released on RED vinyl, along with a 10-inch black vinyl edition of the Baal EP (the tracks from which were included on Re:Call 3 in the A New Career In A New Town box set). Both of these vinyl releases will only be available in ‘Bricks and Mortar’ record stores (i.e. physical shops).

After completing Low and Heroes, the first two albums of his Berlin trilogy, David Bowie spent most of 1978 touring the world. During this huge tour, baptised as Isolar II, he sang in front of a million people across 70 concerts in 12 countries! The star was free from his addiction problems which up until then had seen him go on stage only after having ingested astronomical quantities of cocaine… Recorded in April and May 1978 and released in September the same year, the live Stage album showed a Bowie in full transition, struggling with his glam beginnings, his soul music future and his present new wave. First published for the occasion of the Record Store Days in April 2018, Welcome To The Blackout (Live London’78) also captures this period. Recorded at Earls Court in London on June 30th and July 1st 1979 by Tony Visconti, this is a previously unreleased double live album offering more energetic versions than those on stage. The fascinating tracks from Low and Heroes lose some of their eccentricity on stage. And the “old hits” like Rebel Rebel and Ziggy Stardust gain in luxury what they lose in violence, even if on Suffragette City the singer does seem totally possessed. Finally, the lead guitarist Adrian Belew and rhythmic guitarist Carlos Alomar knit together stunning interventions to accompany the Thin White Duke. An unmissable document for Bowie fans.  – Marc Zisman

“Lodger” is the 13th studio album by English singer-songwriter David Bowie, the last of the Berlin Trilogy. It was recorded in Switzerland and New York City with collaborator Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti. Unlike Bowie’s previous two albums, Lodger contained no instrumentals and a somewhat more pop-oriented style while experimenting with elements of world music and recording techniques inspired by Eno’s Oblique Strategies cards.

On the surface, Lodger is the most accessible of the three Berlin-era records David Bowie made with Brian Eno, simply because there are no instrumentals and there are a handful of concise pop songs. Nevertheless, Lodger is still gnarled and twisted avant pop; what makes it different is how it incorporates such experimental tendencies into genuine songs, something that Low and Heroes purposely avoided. “D.J.,” “Look Back in Anger,” and “Boys Keep Swinging” have strong melodic hooks that are subverted and strengthened by the layered, dissonant productions, while the remainder of the record is divided between similarly effective avant pop and ambient instrumentals. Lodger has an edgier, more minimalistic bent than its two predecessors, which makes it more accessible for rock fans, as well as giving it a more immediate, emotional impact. It might not stretch the boundaries of rock like Low and Heroes, but it arguably utilizes those ideas in a more effective fashion.

“Heroes” is the twelfth studio album by English musician David Bowie and the second installment of his “Berlin Trilogy”. Recorded with Brian Eno and Tony Visconti, “Heroes” continued the ambient experiments and featured the contributions of guitarist Robert Fripp.

Repeating the formula of Low’s half-vocal/half-instrumental structure, Heroes develops and strengthens the sonic innovations David Bowie and Brian Eno explored on their first collaboration. The vocal songs are fuller, boasting harder rhythms and deeper layers of sound. Much of the harder-edged sound of Heroes is due to Robert Fripp’s guitar, which provides a muscular foundation for the electronics, especially on the relatively conventional rock songs. Similarly, the instrumentals on Heroes are more detailed, this time showing a more explicit debt to German synth pop and European experimental rock. Essentially, the difference between Low and Heroes lies in the details, but the record is equally challenging and groundbreaking.

Finally officially released 20-track live performance from Los Angeles in September 1974, including two songs tracks not on the “David Live” album. Recorded in-between the “Diamond Dogs” and “Philly Dogs” tours.

Driven by an entirely deeper dynamic than most pop artists, David Bowie inhabited a very special world of extraordinary sounds and endless vision. Unwilling to stay on the treadmill of rock legend and avoiding the descent into ever demeaning and decreasing circles of cliché, Bowie wrote and performed what he wanted, when he wanted. His absence from the endless list of “important events” has just fuelled interest. Constant speculation about what the guy was up to has even led some to wonder if this is his greatest reinvention ever.

GRAMMY Award-nominated artist James Blake’s third full-length album, “The Colour In Anything”. Among its 17 tracks, the record features the recently revealed songs “Modern Soul” and “Timeless”— both initially featured on his BBC Radio 1 Residency show. In addition, it includes “I Need a Forest Fire” [feat. Bon Iver] and “Radio Silence.” In addition to the Bon Iver feature, Frank Ocean and Rick Rubin also contributed to The Colour In Anything as co-writer and co-producer, respectively.

Little was heard from James Blake throughout an almost three-year period that followed Overgrown, his second straight Top Ten U.K. album. He appeared on an Airhead track and released a 12″ on his 1-800-Dinosaur label, yet it wasn’t until February 2016, during his BBC Radio 1 program, that listeners got their initial taste of album three. Drawn like a scene from a dissolving relationship that immediately precedes release and relief, “Modern Soul” hinted that the album could be a bit brighter with less of the anguish that permeated the singer/producer’s first two albums. Another song, a vaguely aching minimal dub ballad, was aired two months later, possibly chosen because it too had a title, “Timeless,” that could potentially wind up detractors. In late April, when it seemed like he might spring on his audience a tune named something like “Proper Music,” Blake received a profile boost from Beyoncé, whose Lemonade prominently sported a pair of songs featuring his assistance. A couple weeks later, the long-delayed The Colour in Anything materialized at a length nearly that of his first two albums put together. Recording began in London. Once stalled by creative fatigue, Blake decamped to Rick Rubin’s Malibu studio. The sunnier environment had no evident effect on the album’s outlook. Regardless of location, Blake continues to deal in fraught romantic trauma, setting the album’s tone immediately with “Radio Silence,” a mix of mournful gospel and surging synthesizers in which “I can’t believe this, you don’t wanna see me” is stated something like ten times. As he sifts through the wreckage in puzzled and lucid states, he still stretches and distorts his frail but transfixing choir boy voice. A few lines are expressed with Auto-Tune fillips, some are enhanced through fine layering, and others are left unembellished, sometimes sunk into the mix of basslines that tap and thrum, percussion that gently skitters and scrapes, and synthesizers, applied like coating, that swell and swarm. Most disorienting is “Put That Away and Talk to Me,” akin to a malfunctioning lullaby mobile playing a late-’90s Timbaland knockoff. Blake sought some help, not only from Rubin, who co-produced the Malibu sessions, but from Justin Vernon, who assisted with two songs and is heard on “I Need a Forest Fire,” while Frank Ocean co-wrote another pair, including the all-voice closer, where Blake solemnly resolves — ta-da — that contentment is up to him. Compared to the self-titled debut and Overgrown, this a more graceful and denser purging, one that can soundtrack some intense wallowing or, at a low volume, throb and murmur unobtrusively in the background. ~ Andy Kellman

FLAC tracks 24bit/44,1kHz | Time – 50:58 minutes | 565 MB | Genre: Pop
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: Qobuz | Front Cover | © Parlophone UK

Lily Allen’s No Shame is her fourth studio album and the follow-up to 2014’s Sheezus. No Shame features the singles “Higher” and “Three” and is set for release via Parlophone/Warner Bros. Records.

No Shame is Lily Allen’s most personal, insightful and fully-formed record to date. It includes lead song “Trigger Bang” featuring Giggs, which The Guardian describes as, “a return to the melancholic pop that made her so intriguing.”

Working with collaborators Fryars, Mark Ronson, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Burna Boy, P2J and Cass Lowe to create No Shame, Lily says her goal was to make an album that is “as truthful as possible.” Speaking about the sense of catharsis that came with making the album, she says, “I believe that we as humans work through things by talking about them, and that’s what making music is for me. It’s sharing things that you hope are going to connect with people, not that are going to connect with algorithms.”

Sheezus, Lily Allen’s last album released in 2014, wasn’t really a success. But this didn’t really have an effect on the Brit, who has changed a lot since. Gone are the rock’n’roll black hair, the punk platinum blonde is unleashed! No Shame has a suitable name. Did Allen find her rebel side again to conceive an album centered on herself? The head up high and comfortable with herself, she triggers an emotional bomb, of which she seems rather proud. This autobiographical work tells, from a rather feminist point of view, the story of the separation of her parents, but also of her own, these painful moments after which you’ve got to bounce back. Borrowing African sounds and a hint of Auto-tune, Your Choice introduces a new Lily Allen alongside Burna Boy. You want to dance and shrug as if to say: we’re breaking up but in the end I don’t care. But reality quickly catch up with her. She is touching on Apples, on which she reveals pages from her intimacy. Lily Allen then evokes the memory of her parents’ divorce with her reedy voice on a few accords plastered with extreme simplicity. Then it’s her own she highlights with her desire to not make anyone suffer, that she immediately counters by labeling that a cliché. Twelve years ago, Lily Allen opened the way for female singers full of boldness and rage, but on No Shame, she reminds us that she is their queen.  – Clara Bismuth

Since I Never Learn in 2014, the Swedish queen of pop hasn’t released an album, to better come back with So Sad So Sexy. Through her almost childish voice and her quite melancholic tunes, Lykke Li works however with the big names of the genre. Among them, Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West), Malay (Frank Ocean, Zayn) and T-Minus (Drake, Nicki Minaj) who helped create the title Deep end. She reveals here a modern pop associated with electro percussion, vocalizations looking toward lyricism and sings an almost erotic poetry. It perfectly ties into the discovery of Two Nights, a title going crescendo and on which she is hypnotic. Indeed, this is not a little girl but well and truly a woman who draws us into a sensual dance in which the bodies touch slowly and with passion. For this duo, she calls upon the rapper Amine, who gives more rhythm to the performance without disturbing the charm of the Swede. And then, there is this surprising intro on acoustic guitar on Jaguars In The Air. Here lies Lykke Li’s talent, the ability to associate her electro pop, her vocalizations coated with a vocoder and her percussion to purely classical instruments. It’s a way to offer music that makes you dance but also allows for deeper listening, so much her compositions are overflowing with subtleties.  – Clara Bismuth

The 2017 passing of LINKIN PARK singer Chester Bennington had an understandably profound effect on the band’s cofounder, Mike Shinoda. Part mourning, part venting, his solo debut, Post Traumatic is a raw representation of loss and helplessness, recorded in the moment. “I can hear in the tone of my voice,” Shinoda told Beats 1 anchor Zane Lowe. “I knew where I was on that day.” The songs on the album reflect many moods—from tender (“Place to Start,” “Brooding”) to aggressive (“Lift Off,” “I.O.U.”)—all armed with Shinoda’s usual hybrid of hip-hop, electronic, and rock. There’s no censor here, especially on “Over Again,” when Shinoda tackles the stresses of Bennington’s tribute concert, even confronting well-wishers asking what he’s going to do next: “You think it’ll be a challenge?/Only my life’s work hanging in the f**king balance,” he shoots back.

Following the sudden loss of his friend and Linkin Park co-vocalist Chester Bennington in July 2017, Mike Shinoda turned to music to process his grief. The resulting effort, Post Traumatic, is a cathartic song arc that carries Shinoda through darkness and into light, offering hope and counseling to himself, his band, and their legions of fans. From the condolence voicemails that end opening track “Place to Start” to the journal-like account of “Over Again” (which recounts Shinoda’s swirling emotions leading up to Linkin Park’s Hollywood Bowl memorial show), Post Traumatic is his journey through the stages of loss, grief, and healing. He reveals his uncertainty about the future of the band, unmoored without his professional partner, and the frustrations of dealing with fans and loved ones as he’s in the midst of his own confusion. Despite the heartbreaking lyrical inspiration, Post Traumatic is bright and catchy, incorporating trap, grime, pop, and industrial influences into a familiar formula. Honoring Fort Minor’s hip-hop heartbeat and Linkin Park’s raw lyrical bloodletting, the album cements itself as a Mike Shinoda solo production, with its genre-hopping experimentation, endearing earnestness, and deeply personal perspective. The first half remains understandably forlorn and full of angst, from the hard-hitting “Watching as I Fall” to the contemplative “Nothing Makes Sense Anymore.” On the Blackbear-featuring “About You,” Shinoda makes one of many efforts to snap himself out of the funk, spitting “I bucked up/told myself to suck it up.” On the aptly titled “Crossing a Line,” the tone of the album shifts, making way for pop-friendly blurs “Hold It Together” and “Ghosts” that kick off the second — and more fiery — half of Post Traumatic. “Make It Up as I Go” is a radio-ready duet with K.Flay that pops with production similar to the Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar’s “Pray for Me.” Deftones frontman Chino Moreno and Machine Gun Kelly join Shinoda on the atmospheric “Lift Off,” and trap-rocker Grandson adds heft to “Running from My Shadow,” a rousing track that sounds like Macklemore fronting Twenty One Pilots. The album draws to a close with the positive “World’s on Fire” — where he sings to a supportive loved one, “the world’s on fire/all I need is you” — and the bittersweet goodbye “Can’t Hear You Now.” While Post Traumatic takes an emotional toll, it ultimately instills feelings of hope and the idea that things can get better. For Shinoda, Linkin Park, and their devoted followers, it’s an effective group therapy session.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/48 kHz | Time – 50:32 minutes | 660 MB | Genre: Rock

Shinedown is an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida formed by singer Brent Smith in 2001. This 14-track album, Shinedown’s most raw and personal to date, is a mental, emotional and physical journey that follows an individual from life’s lowest lows to the highest highs as anxieties dissipate and demons disappear. Given the deeply personal nature of the record, Shinedown went in-house for production for the time ever, enlisting bassist Eric Bass to produce and mix the album in its entirety. ATTENTION ATTENTION ushers in Shinedown’s biggest and boldest chapter yet, as they once again uproot convention and deliver a cinematic and poignant body of work.

Continuing the tone shift of their 2015 effort Threat to Survival, Florida hard rock outfit Shinedown further amplify the polished pop sheen on their sixth set, Attention Attention. Packed with propulsive anthems that are less Breaking Benjamin and more Imagine Dragons (albeit with a lot more muscle), Attention is another step in the band’s evolution away from the murky post-grunge sludge of their early work. Produced by the band’s bassist Eric Bass, Attention Attention is expertly crafted and lives up to its name, maintaining high energy on 14 tracks of fuel-injected might that aligns with mainstream-friendly bands like the aforementioned Imagine Dragons, AWOLNATION, and X-Ambassadors (especially on tracks like the “Sail”-esque “Kill Your Conscience”), as well as Royal Blood, and even a little late-era Muse. “Devil” and “Black Soul” kick the doors in before “Pyro” engulfs listeners with its riff-heavy, propulsive overdrive. Streamlined yet potent, “The Human Radio” and “Darkside” play with programming flourishes and pop hooks, even injecting some Auto-Tune into the latter. Old-school fans will appreciate the classic feel of “Monsters” and “Creatures,” two no-frills moments that harken back to their early days. Outliers include the thematic pairing of the uplifting “Get Up” and the honest “special,” which surprise with their heart and clarity, hinting at a potential for even further sonic evolution and lyrical positivity on subsequent releases. At its core, Attention Attention is a fun, engaging ride, maintaining Shinedown’s power while making subtle bids to attract a wider audience.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96kHz | Time – 40:22 minutes | 875 MB | Genre: Rock

Threat To Survival is the multi-platinum certified rock band, Shinedown’s first new album in three years. The release follows 2012’s Amaryllis, and features the group’s latest #1 rock hit “Cut The Cord”.

Threat To Survival refers to that primal instinct in all of us that determines how we respond to crisis and conflict – the idea of ‘fight or flight’ and the choices we make in any given situation,” explains Shinedown frontman Brent Smith. “This album represents those deciding moments for us as a band. It’s a collection of scenarios that made us who we are, and is, by far, the most autobiographical album we’ve created to date.”

The fifth studio long-player from the Jacksonville, Florida-based hard rock unit, Threat to Survival is also Shinedown’s most pop-oriented set of songs to date. Front-loaded with two of its hardest-hitting (and classic-sounding) cuts in “Asking for It” and the hefty first single “Cut the Cord,” both of which are as hook-laden as they are bruising, Threat to Survival begins to detour from the post-grunge highway with “State of My Head,” a slick amalgam of electro-pop and vintage alt-rock with a catchy as hell though extremely well-worn chorus. Meticulously crafted radio fodder like “How Did You Love,” “Thick as Thieves,” and the Killers-lite “Misfits” follow suit, further distancing the group from its nu-metal origins, but the band hasn’t completely lost its knack for crafting punishing blasts of groove-laden and distortion-heavy modern rock. The roaring “Oblivion” sees vocalist Brent Smith doing his best Layne Staley impression while the band lets loose a firestorm of heavily compressed decibels behind him, and late album highlight “Black Cadillac,” which somehow manages to both brutalize and swing, seems destined to become a fan favorite. If anything, Threat to Survival proves that Shinedown still have plenty of gas left in the tank, and while the occasional foray into the shallower end of the mainstream may divide some listeners, there’s enough here to keep longtime followers satiated (and probably a little curious/nervous as to what the future holds) until the next ride. –AllMusic Review by James Christopher Monger

Seven years have passed since Snow Patrol’s last album ‘Fallen Empires’. In that time the band have all ventured off into a variety of projects. Gary Lightbody continued his work with his Tired Pony side project with members of Belle and Sebastian, R.E.M, Reindeer Section and Fresh Young Fellows and moved to Los Angeles to begin writing songs for movies and doing a number of high-profile co-writes with Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Biffy Clyro and One Direction. Taking this extended break from Snow Patrol proved to be a source of inspiration, and writing songs that were not pulled directly from his own psyche helped heal what Lightbody considered to be not so much writer’s block as life block. In the meantime the band have been working on Wildness, Snow Patrol’s 7th studio album.

The album finds the band searching for clarity, connection, and meaning, while staying true to the melodic songwriting prowess that brought them to prominence. Wildness taps into something raw and primitive, and lead-singer and songwriter Gary Lightbody says of the album: “There are many types of wildness, but I think it can be distilled into two: the wildness of the modern age, all it’s confusion, illogic and alienation and a more ancient wildness. Something primal, alive and beautiful that speaks to our true connectivity, our passion, our love, our communion with nature and each other. This is the kind of wildness the album is centered around. The loss of it. Trying to reconnect with it. To remember it.”

The 15 track deluxe version of Wildness features 5 stunning stripped back versions of tracks from the album packaged together in a 32 page bookpack featuring exclusive photos of the band by photographer Bradley Quinn.

It’s a great comeback for Snow Patrol. The Brits have simply let some time pass sinceThe Greatest Hits (four years to be exact), which already sounded like a career review. Seven years since Fallen Empires. Time, for the friends of Irish singer Gary Lightbody to bring him back to writing and help him out of his deep depression, and then onto the editing of Wildness in Los Angeles. The man who writes as much for Taylor Swift as Harry Styles, and whose songs end up being the main themes of the most watched TV shows in the world, with Grey’s Anatomy, in this seventh opus he has put the essential ingredients required for every mainstream pop album: a quavering voice, melodramatic guitar, expiatory existentialist lyrics (Life And Death, Life On Earth, Don’t Give In). Even if you won’t find in any tracks with a lot of potential, the fans of the hugely successful Chasing Cars will be overjoyed.  – Charlotte Saintoin

The Piano Guys 2 features more of the imaginative mash-ups and arrangements that made their last album so successful, creating an incomparable style that appeals to audiences from all walks of life and across generations. For the song “Begin Again,” pianist Jon Schmidt says “We found inspiration from a classical piece, J.S. Bach’s ‘Sheep May Safely Graze’ (Cantata No. 208) and we combined it with Taylor Swift’s ‘Begin Again.’ There were moments when the two seemed to play off and echo each other naturally.” On “Mission Impossible” The Piano Guys are joined by fellow YouTube sensation, violinist Lindsey Stirling, for their own version of this famous musical theme. The album also includes TPG’s interpretations of The Lord of the Rings movie theme, “Without You” by David Guetta and more. The Piano Guys will be touring nationally throughout 2013.
The second studio outing from YouTube celebrities the Piano Guys (pianist Jon Schmidt, cellist Steven Sharp Nelson, and multimedia specialists Al Van Der Beek and Tel Stewart), the appropriately titled Piano Guys 2, offers up another highly imaginative, shape-shifting set of offbeat mash-ups (Taylor Swift and Bach) and quirky renditions of pop culture staples (the Mission Impossible theme with fellow YouTube giant Lindsey Stirling, The Lord of the Rings Theme, etc. ).

From tragedy to triumph, YOB’s incredible 8th full-length recording was conceived amidst dire circumstances that nearly left frontman Mike Scheidt dead. Suffering from an extremely painful and potentially fatal intestinal disease, Scheidt miraculously recovered and reinvigorated the Oregon trio with a new sense of purpose for Our Raw Heart, an album informed by the will to survive. More exposed than ever both physically and emotionally, YOB bleed out seven riveting tracks of enormous volume and pensive, transcendental beauty across 75 minutes of ultimate doom. A brilliant musical progression in the YOB continuum, Our Raw Heart is the band at their most aggressive, impassioned and eclectic. The riffs are massive, the vocals captivating and the songwriting sublime. Existing in its own organic universe, Our Raw Heart is truly the band’s finest work to date and the apex achievement of what heavy music can accomplish.

The year 2017 was a vintage one for Giovanni Antonini: he was awarded an Echo Klassik, two Gramophone Awards and a Diapason d’Or of the Year for his recent releases. Two of these prizes distinguished Il Distratto, volume 4 of the complete recording of the Haydn symphonies on which he embarked for Alpha in 2014. For the sixth volume, released in 2018, the Milanese conductor is again joined by the Kammerorchester Basel, which shares the project with Il Giardino Armonico and which he knows very well, since he conducts it regularly and they have made many recordings together, including volume 5 of the Haydn series. This volume focuses on symphonies with a ‘sacred’ inspiration: the Symphony No.26, ‘Lamentatione’, was composed in 1768 for Holy Week, and no.30 was nicknamed ‘Alleluja’ after the plainchant melody Haydn uses in it. Symphony No.41 was written in 1769.

On their previous Supraphon recordings (SU 4185 – Musica per arpa, SU 4188 – Vivaldi, Telemann, Bach, SU 4121 – Telemann, Britten ad.), harpist Kateřina Englichová and oboist Vilém Veverka sufficiently proved their outstanding performance qualities as well as informed interest in such mutually remote music worlds as the Baroque and the 20th century modernism. The present recording – their first made in dues – reflects more than twelve years of their performing together in concerts. The not-so-common combination of oboe and harp provides an endless scale of timbres and the resulting impression is marked both by frailness and confident virtuosity. Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is the crucial piece on the album and represents the composer’s memories of his friends lost in the First World War. Little musical gems written by Ravel and Debussy resound here in sensitive arrangements which have enriched the compositions by new timbre qualities. Primavera composed by Luboš Sluka was composed explicitly for the Englichová – Veverka duo and appears here in premiere recording.

The musical world of Kateřina Englichová and Vilém Veverka: entrancing timbre scales, frailness and virtuosity

“The playing is exceptional – there is strong evidence is of interpretative sympathy between the two instrumentalists. The recording quality is very clear and uncluttered.” (MusicWeb International)

Settings of poetry and other literary texts form a special category in the discography of Norwegian pianist-composer Ketil Bjørnstads and A Suite of Poems, recorded at Oslos Rainbow Studio in June 2016, is a song cycle to put alongside such projects as A Passion for John Donne, Sunrise, and The Light.

Norwegian-Danish author Lars Saabye Christensen is one of Scandinavias most widely-praised contemporary writers. For many years now, in the course of his travels around the globe, Christensen has been sending hotel poems to Ketil Bjørnstad, a friend from their teenage years, inviting him to make music out of them. I started writing music to his poems more than 20 years ago, says Ketil in his liner note for this album. His ability to expose the inner conflicts we all bring with us in our suitcases is striking.

Christensen literary postcards explore a range of moods. Bjørnstad, who is also a writer himself, says: I feel very connected to the lonely, existential perspective of these poems, made in different hotel rooms. For this recording, Ketil worked closely with singer and actress Anneli Drecker, former lead vocalist of pop group Bel Canto.
