The connection between the life and work of the composer seems hardly more compelling than in the case of Mendel ssohn’s String Quartet no. 6 in F minor op. 80. Nothing seems more able to demystify a work of music than death itself. The title page of the manuscript of the String Quartet in D minor bears the date ‘In March 1824’ in Schubert’s own hand. And indeed, in the previous year Schubert did experience tragedy: professional failure and private disappointments tormented the composer in 1823.

“Conclusion.  Shadows on the cave wall.” ~NIN.com

“On Bad Witch, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross conclude the conceptual narrative arc started on 2016’s Not the Actual Events and continued on 2017’s Add Violence…  Bad Witch reveals itself as the most cohesive and enveloping experience of this period. As Reznor noted in interviews, Events focused on self-reflection and self-destruction, while Violence searched for answers from a broken world. Bad Witch concludes that we’re the problem and humanity is doomed. That nihilistic blood courses through these six songs.” ~Allmusic.com

Word Premier Recording – Fourth Quartet “The Starry Sky”The title of Philippe Hersant’s 4th Quartet, The Starry Sky immediately informs the listener that this piece alludes to Beethoven, since the starry sky is an emblematic Beethovenian topos. It appears in the following quote by Kant “the moral law within us and the starry sky above our heads” which Beethoven wrote in his personal journal in 1820 (aphorism No. 146). It is explicitly or implicitly present in many of his pieces, such as the song Abendlied Unterm gestirnten Himmel (Evening Song under the Starry Sky) and in the slow movement of his Eighth Quartet, Opus 59 No. 2 which, according to one of Beethoven’s confessions to Schindler, would be a “meditation under the starry sky”. Perhaps it is not a coincidence that these two pages are written in the key of E major, which Beethoven seemed to consider a mystical key.

Referred to as the „French Beethoven“, George Onslow (1784-1853) lived through the First Empire and the Restoration, imposing himself by clearing the way, to a degree, for chamber music, which was little practiced in France at the time.

A contemporary of Berlioz and Paganini, Onslow would lend credibility to this genre that did not find an audience in Paris until 1814, when his good friend the violinist Pierre Baillot led a series of chamber concerts.
Amongst the hundreds of works he wrote, his string quartets in particular stand out for their spirit of invention, sometimes visionary and always surprising. Beginning with his youthful quartets (Opp. 8, 9 and 10), Onslow innovated in both content and form, experimenting with a French style that lay within the heritage of the Mozartian and Beethovenian quartet. To this was often added a virtuosic – typically Parisian – dimension that contributed a spectacular aspect to the quality of the ideas.

Violinist Rachel Barton Pine and harpsichordist Jory Vinikour, critically acclaimed artists of international renown- and also close friends-record together for the first time on this album of J.S. Bach’s complete sonatas for violin and harpsichord. The artists approach these works as Bach intended: as trio sonatas with equally important roles for the violin and the harpsichord’s treble and bass lines. In addition to the six Sonatas, the album offers the remarkable and ravishingly poetic Cantabile, BWV 1019a, a free-standing work that Bach originally conceived as a movement of the Sonata, BWV 1019. Cedille’s audiophile engineering and the intimate acoustics of Evanston, Illinois’ Nichols Hall allow the complex trio textures to blossom with detail. In all, the album sets a new standard for a body of work that Bach’s son, CPE, considered among his father’s finest compositions. Rachel Barton Pine is a Billboard chart-topping artist. Her 2016 album ‘Testament’, comprising JS Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin entered the Billboard Classical Chart in the No. 1 position, as did her 2013 Cedille album ‘Violin Lullabies’. Making his Cedille label debut, Vinikour received Grammy Award nominations in the category of Best Solo Instrumental Recording for his 2013 album of modern American music for harpsichord and his 2012 release of Rameau’s complete harpsichord works.

This new album by Rachel Kolly d’Alba takes us to the heart of this Fin de Siècle and we learn all its secrets. Accompanied for the occasion by his partner of always: Christian Chamorel, and Spektral Quartet Chicago. A glowing interpretation, deep and visionary!

Few works of the period are more recognizable than César Franck’s magnificent Violin Sonata. The work has been transcribed for nearly every instrument on the planet and is a permanent staple of the repertoire. Franck’s influence on Ernest Chausson’s Concerto is unmistakable. A late-Romantic hybrid, the work blends elements of piano quintet and string quintet styles.

Rachel Kolly d’Alba signed worldwide with Warner Classics in 2010. Her first release of six sonatas by composer Eugène Ysaÿe burst onto the musical scene receiving unanimously high praise from international press. Her Wigmore Hall debut in April last year was reviewed in Musical Opinion as ‘virtuosity of the most brilliant and effortless kind, with Christian Chamorel, time and again, proving himself to be a truly exceptional partner’.

In dubbing his album “The Golden Age” violinist Ray Chen wanted to evoke an era when violinists Fritz Kreisler and Jascha Heifetz travelled the world, and when the ink was barely dry on the works of Claude Debussy, Erik Satie, Max Bruch, Cyril Scott and George Gershwin. Chen thought of his bouquet as a great big spray bordered by smaller flowers whose size hides an often exquisite perfection. And so it is that Max Bruch’s First Concerto a major work, and musically a classic, dating from 1866, is hemmed around with a few pearls from Gershwin, Ponce and Scott re-written by Heifetz et Kreisler, not to forget a few delightful winks from Stephan Koncz (born 1984) at Satie in The New Satiesfaction or Debussy in his revision of Clair de lune. It’s Stephan Koncz himself, who is also the cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic, who holds down the cello role in the revisions for string quartet. Ray Chen won the 2008 Menuhin Competition and the following year won the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels: two big door-openers for the great international career which he has enjoyed since, with a constant companion in the form of a Stradivarius which had belonged to Joseph Joachim.

It has haunted René Jacobs since childhood: first as a boy soprano in Ghent, then as a countertenor, he has constantly frequented the supreme masterpiece that is the ‘St Matthew Passion’. Jacobs uses the layout of the Good Friday Vesper service from Bach’s time, with choirs front and back, rather than side-by-side. He also gives us extra soloists to complete the bi-choral effect. For Bach, the two halves were 28 metres apart. At that distance, coordination difficulties begin to appear between the speed of light, and the speed of sound, and we cannot determine how Bach dealt with this problem. However the wonders of SACD multichannel surround sound can at last give an impression of what Bach intended for St Thomas’ Church in Leipzig.

As ever, harmonia mundi’s production values are such that we are given several essays on the concept of the layout in Bach’s time, reflections on the new recording by René Jacobs, full texts and biographies in a 176 page booklet, with sumptuous packaging. This is, somewhat surprisingly, René Jacobs’ first recording of ‘St Matthew’.

„Jacobs has a magnificent vocal presence of soloists from Choir I – led by the polished and increasinly believable Evangelist of Werner Güra…and a Christus in Johannes Weisser who is intensely human, even febrile as he confronts the terrible events one by one…Jacobs’s attention to texture and matters of accentuation is what defines his most compelling short-term characterisation“ (Gramophone Magazine)

„the novelty lies in Jacobs’ games with acoustics and space in his studio location in Berlin…this spatial separation keeps you listening intently and listening afresh. Jacobs’s Passion is intimate, dramatic, conducted with audible love…Güra’s Evangelist makes a compelling guide; Fink is most eloquent, with Johannes Weiss solid as Jesus“ (The Times)

The Orchester Wiener Akademie and its conductor Martin Haselböck continue the Resound Beethoven series, performed on period instruments and scrupulously respecting the orchestral layout of 200 years ago. Volume 6 is devoted to the Eighth Symphony, premiered in 1814, and the Piano Concerto in D major op.61a, first performed in 1808. Beethoven made this piano arrangement of his Violin Concerto at the request of Clementi, who wished to publish it in London. The recording took place in the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Old University) in Vienna, where many important works by Beethoven received their first performance. The Austrian pianist Gottlieb Wallisch is the soloist in this rarely performed concerto.

For his debut solo album, the Leader of the London Symphony Orchestra showcases his virtuosity and innate musicality, navigating the technical and artistic challenges of Paganini’s 24 Caprices for solo violin. Staples of the violinist’s impressive repertoire, as a budding musician Simovic would practice these works daily in place of scales, and has gone on to delight audiences with performances across the globe.

While Paganini’s Caprices were intended to improve and strengthen technique, they are more commonly used to determine the wheat from the chaff, their demanding, high speed passages pushing players to their limits. With its fast scales and arpeggios, double and triple stops, and left-hand pizzicato, the final caprice is widely considered one of the most technically challenging violin pieces ever written.

A septet of LSO musicians relive the Russian folk tale of a soldier who trades his fiddle for unparalleled gain in Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale. A theatrical work ‘to be read, played and danced,’ British stage & television actor Malcolm Sinclair narrates, leading listeners through the soldier’s regretful decision.

Performed in 2015 as part of the Barbican’s inaugural Sound Unbound festival, The Soldier’s Tale was recorded in the Jerwood Hall of LSO St. Luke’s, a vibrant venue which is also home to the Orchestra’s community and music education programme. Directed by violinist Roman Simovic, the ensemble for this project featured veteran principal players from across the Orchestra, including bassoonist Rachel Gough, clarinetist Andrew Marriner, percussionist Neil Percy and trumpet player Philip Cobb.

Luca Marenzio was the most brilliant representative of the sublime art of the madrigal during the last twenty years of the sixteenth century. Whereas the style of his early works is light, fluid and transparent, in his maturity Marenzio’s language turned towards a more complex, introspective attitude that made him the most emblematic musical exponent of Late Renaissance melancholy. L’amoroso & crudo stile brings together some of Marenzio’s finest madrigals, aiming to reproduce the most intimate expressive facets of a music of extraordinary beauty and profound humanity. With the emotional intensity and deep respect for the poetic text that distinguishes the ensemble, RossoPorpora begins in this debut recording its personal exploration and celebration of the madrigal, the earliest and still unsurpassed representation of Italian musical identity.

Between 1580 and his death in 1599, Luca Marenzio would publish no fewer than 18 books of madrigals, for between four and six vocalists – some 500 masterpieces have survived to the present day, which is testimony to the furious evolution of Marenzio’s languages over the course of just a few years. As he went on, he would develop ever-darker atmospheres which grew increasingly tortured and chromatic, and only Gesualdo would pick up the torch of his harmonic searchings a few years later. The two final madrigals offered on this album from the Rossoporpora ensemble, taken from the Ninth and final Book of Madrigals for five voices in 1599, provide a striking example: no sooner does a sequence become clear than Marenzio destroys it with a dissonance, an ineffable disharmony, a perilous chromatism. The album’s title says it all: we really move from “amoroso” to “crudo” – from the amorous to the cruel – across 18 years of writing; with lyrics borrowed from love poetry or pastoral verse, Marenzio steers clear of any religious temptation; indeed he wrote relatively few religious works. In fact, his art resides in the most human aspect of music and song.

This fascinating transatlantic musical collaboration between the brass players of London’s Royal Academy of Music and New York’s Juilliard School presents enduring masterpieces by Giovanni Gabrieli and his Venetian contemporaries.

Under the direction of Reinhold Friedrich, renowned trumpet soloist and principal trumpet of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the players blend modern instruments and intellect with 16th-century technique and tuning to excel in this profoundly challenging repertoire. The beautiful acoustic of St Jude’s, Hampstead results in a gloriously sonorous soundscape; burnished waves of rich, warm trombones alternate with the brilliant, crystalline articulation of trumpets.

Academy Principal Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, who produced the recording, states: ‘We’re hoping it will show Gabrieli as the composer of great intimate music as well as wonderfully grandiloquent Venetian polyphony.’
This remarkable recording features some of the most compelling and attractive instrumental music of the late Renaissance era and boasts performances worthy of Gabrieli’s extraordinary legacy and the reputation of these two outstanding institutions.

Since 2004 the Royal Academy of Music and The Juilliard School have collaborated on a series of major transatlantic projects: the co-commissioning of Kommilitonen! by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and concerts at the BBC Proms, Lincoln Center and Radio City with Sir Elton John, Sir Colin Davis and John Adams. They have also worked together on numerous chamber and early music projects, including the 2015 Bach tour of New York, Boston, Leipzig and London with Masaaki Suzuki and Rachel Podger.

Throughout his life, Gustav Mahler grappled with existential questions which were a source of both torment and inspiration for him. Perhaps the most important of these involved the existence of an afterlife, a theme which informs his first four symphonies to varying degrees, and which helps explain why Mahler considered his Symphony No. 4 from 1900 to be the conclusion of a ‘fully self-contained tetra- logy’. Despite Mahler’s doubts, bouts of writer’s block, changes of course in midstream and his reservations about written programmes, the overarching themes of the works in question are as clear as day. While the First Symphony was about suffering, death and transcendence, the Second about the possibility of resurrection after death and the Third about an order of living beings in nature and the cosmos as created by God, the Fourth focuses on the opposition between earthly life and paradise.

“a refreshing Mahler” (Guido van Oorschot, Volkskrant)

“The buildup and level of detail were once again wonderfully Gattian.” (Peter van der Lint, Trouw)

“the sheer sound of the orchestra in the Ruhevoll is so beautiful it makes you cry” (Mischa Spel, NRC)

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s I Quattro Rusteghi is a wonderful comedy. Very clever and very Italian: colourful, lively and rhythmic. The women are impertinent, cunning and seductive; the men are awful, dirty and mean. The confrontation between them is at the centre of the plot; of course this clash is explosive. This opera is a real feast for the senses and the imagination. The staging is choreographic and follows the plight of the different characters. Each is attracted by and then put down by the others. The subject could be serious, and in a way it is; but Goldoni turns it into a richly humorous comedy about emancipation.

The European Opera Centre chooses its repertoire with care to ensure it is suitable for young singers. This recording with the RLPO and Vasily Petrenko features some of the best young singers from across Europe with an average age below thirty who are joined by one highly experienced singer – Mihnea Lamatic from the Romanian National Opera.

Of course, I quatro rusteghi by Wolf-Ferrari was first performed in Germany, in 1906, but this little masterpiece – actually a great masterpiece – given here in its original Venetian dialect (hence “quatro” rather than “quattro” as proper Italian would have it), was recorded at a “mise en espace” performance of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. This is the most inspired work by this Italian-German composer, who is constantly pulled between loyalties to two different nations which forced him to move to Switzerland during the Great War so as not to have to choose sides; we can clearly hear the influence of Verdi’s Falstaff, and a little less of the influence of Puccini, although not Gianni Schicchi – which was still years away from being written at the time! For all that Wolf-Ferrari played a key role in the lyrical world of his times, he was refused a place in posterity, possibly because he was too Italian for the Germans and too Germanic for the Transalpines. That said, I quatro rusteghi remains his most-played work to this day, and rightly so: it contains a fearfully spiritual orchestration – including an extraordinary part for solo bassoon, amongst other things – a magisterial vocal ensemble piece and a truculence that takes hold of the listener from beginning to end. We’d love to hear it on French stages too… The album brings together a superb range of young lyrical talents who are surely ones to watch very closely.

Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer Richie Sambora Teams with Female Guitar Goddess Orianthi for a collection of new music mixing blues, pop, rock, country and many more genres.

RSO is a collaboration between guitar virtuosos and hard rock power couple Richie Sambora and Orianthi Panagaris. Sambora spent 30 years as the lead guitarist for stadium rock icons Bon Jovi, and also enjoyed a successful solo career, while Australia-born Orianthi first caught the public’s attention as the lead guitarist for Michael Jackson’s This Is It tour before starting her own solo venture and collaborating or performing alongside a wide array of artists, including Steven Tyler, Prince, Santana, Steve Vai, Alice Cooper, and Lacey Sturm, among others. Versatile instrumentalists who can go from classic rock and blues to R&B and country on a dime, the pair began operating under the RSO moniker in 2017 when they released their debut EP, Rise, via BMG Records. ~ James Christopher Monger.
