The saxophonist leads his quintet in a set of his own gnarly original compositions. With a band comprising pianist Lewis Porter, guitarist Jack DeSalvo, bassist Francois Grillot, and drummer Enrique Haneine. The music by these creative and great jazz musicians is very dynamic and expressive. They are using huge range of different musical expressions, twisting together various playing styles and playing techniques. Outstanding and impressive solos, passionate and vivacious improvisations, rigorous, loud and powerful blow outs, dynamic rhythmic and synthesis with various music styles – all these elements are the main part of the compositions. The music by these great jazz masters is based on avant-garde and experimental jazz, free improvisation, bebop, post-bop, neo-bop and other contemporary and modern jazz styles intonations. Their music always has expressive and extraordinary sound.

Daniel Clarke Bouchards – Scenes d’enfants (2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 52:51 minutes | 820 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Booklet, Front cover | © ATMA Classique

At just 13 years old, the Québécois pianist Daniel Clarke Bouchard is already a sensation on the Montréal music scene. ATMA Classique presents Scènes d’enfants, his tailor-made debut solo recording, featuring music by Mendelssohn, Debussy, Haydn and Chopin. The hugely talented Clarke Bouchard is also a jazz enthusiast and joins his mentor — jazz great, Oliver Jones — on two jazz-inspired tracks performed on two pianos: an improvisation on Mozart’s Ah vous dirai-je maman variations, and Claude Léveillée’s Grande valse fofolle, a piece the two performed live at the 2012 Francofolies de Montréal.

Teenage piano sensation Daniel Clarke Bouchard was awarded an ADISQ Award in Quebec in 2014 for Classical Album of the Year, Soloist or Small Ensemble for this record. Bouchard became a sensation on the Montréal and world music scene, including appearances at Carnegie Hall and on the Ellen DeGeneres show, at the age of only 13. On Scenes d’enfants, his tailor-made debut solo recording, Bouchard presents this programme of music by Mendelssohn, Debussy, Haydn and Chopin. The hugely talented Clarke Bouchard is also a jazz enthusiast and joins his mentor Oliver Jones on two jazz-inspired tracks performed on two pianos: an improvisation on Mozart’s Ah vous dirai-je maman Variations and Claude Léveillée’s Grande valse fofolle.

“This CD has been carefully planned and executed so as to show young Daniel at his best, playing repertoire that suits him at this stage of his life. “Scènes d’enfants” is the title of the album: Scenes from Childhood, after the Schumann piano work by the same name. Though all the pieces chosen are youthful in spirit, it does not mean they are intended to be played by students. On the contrary, some of them are very difficult indeed. Daniel understands this music, and he is more than equal to every technical challenge.” (La Scena Musicale)

“Virtuous Circles Of Miles Davis” is the story of a journey through which the music of Miles continues to live in the hearts and minds of these musicians, a “virtuous circle”, in fact, within which the Davisian work relives, inspires and it transforms; once again regenerated, it continues to live and excite the present of these artists. More than a tribute to Miles, “Virtuous Circles Of Miles Davis” is a declaration of love towards a precise period of the life of these musicians, a historical and intimate moment in which Miles and his work were both inspirational and witnesses. The fact that in the quintet of Malvisi there is not a trumpet player speaks volumes about the genuine honesty of this artistic affection.

The New Orleans brass band continuum stretches from the 19th century through to the present in a tradition passed on from father to son through the generations. Hired to accompany funerals, ceremonies, and street festivals, the music these bands played “just touch your heart, they were so beautiful”, reminisced Louis Armstrong. From the early 1900’s on, bands led by such legends as Freddy Keppard and the great Joe ’King’ Oliver employed the moniker ‘Olympia’ in their band name. Oliver’s drummer Arnold du Pass set up the Olympia Serenaders, a band saxophonist Harold Dejan played with in the 20’s. Dejan studied under Albert Nicholas, and plied the Mississippi with one of the great riverboat orchestras, the Original Tuxedo Orchestra. From 1960 on he led what was considered New Orleans’ top marching band, the Original Olympia Brass Band, thus heralding in a brass band renaissance. Featuring some of the Crescent City’s top players, the band is augmented by several dedicated English and German players who journeyed to the the Big Easy at one time or another to experience the joy of playing with some of the music’s greats. This album has all the ‘live’ exuberance of a N.O. street parade and features a cross-section of classic brass band repertoire – the religious hymn Glory Land the upbeat the funeral dirges, Leave Me Lord Me and In the Upper Garden, the folksy Lilly of the Valley and the up-beat jazzy pieces We Shall Walk Through the Streets, Take Your Burden to the Lord, Shake It and Break It and Olympia Special. A longtime student of jazz piano history, Dick Hyman has previously recorded the works of Eubie Blake, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and other early jazz pianists. Some of the greatest jazzmen from the Swing Era have been brought together for this exceptional album including Phil Bodner, Urbie Green, Milt Hinton, Butch Miles, Bucky Pizzarelli, Joe Temperly, Frank Wess and Joe Wilder.

As the title implies, this is very much a swing set. Pianist Dick Hyman (a master of all pre-bop styles) has little difficulty emulating Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum and Count Basie (among others) plus his own style in an octet also featuring trumpeter Joe Wilder, trombonist Urbie Green, altoist-clarinetist Phil Bodner, baritonist Joe Temperley, rhythm guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, bassist Milt Hinton, drummer Butch Miles and (on three tunes) altoist Frank Wess. The opening and closing numbers are ad-lib blues both titled “From the Age of Swing”; sandwiched in between are ten swing-era standards plus a couple of obscure Duke Ellington items. Among the highlights are “Topsy,” “Them There Eyes,” “Rose Room” and “Mean to Me.” No real surprises occur, but mainstream fans should like this swinging set.

Tracklist:
01 – From the Age of Swing
02 – You’re Driving Me Crazy – Moten Swing
03 – Topsy

Dick Hyman, one of the most accomplished and versatile musicians of our time, is especially known as an authority on early jazz. After a lifetime of playing and studying the music of Bix Beiderbecke, Hyman recorded this solo program of music associated with Bix, including all five original pieces Bix wrote for piano. Hyman arranged other numbers Bix performed with various groups and plays and improvises upon these in his distinctive, brilliant style. Thinking About Bix was recorded at Skywalker Sound in California using custom-made microphones, electronics and high-resolution digital converters.

Long an admirer of cornetist/composer Bix Beiderbecke, Dick Hyman pays tribute to the gifted but short-lived jazz legend by interpreting the songs Bix recorded in a series of piano solos, mixing transcriptions of Beiderbecke’s solos (and occasionally, others’ as well) with his own improvisations. One exception is Hyman’s original composition “Thinking About Bix,” a warm, easygoing piece that captures the spirit of the era. The pianist’s buoyant setting of “Singin’ the Blues” and playful rendition of “Ostrich Walk” prove captivating, while his jaunty interpretation of “‘Tain’t So, Honey, ‘Tain’t So” is lots of fun. But the obvious high points of this CD, recorded not long before Hyman’s 81st birthday, are Beiderbecke’s rarely performed works for solo piano. The shimmering impressionist air of “Candlelights,” the subtlety of “In the Dark,” the Gershwin-flavored “In a Mist,” the constantly shifting “Flashes,” and the loping treatment of “Davenport Blues” all glisten in Hyman’s gifted hands. Stride pianist Mike Lipskin (a protégé of stride pianist Willie “The Lion” Smith) joins Hyman in a lively duo rendition of “You Took Advantage of Me”.

Don McLean is one of America’s most enduring singer-songwriters and forever associated with his classic hits “American Pie”, “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)”, “Castles in the Air”, “And I Love You So” and “Crying”. Since first hitting the charts in 1971, Don has amassed over 40 gold and platinum records world-wide and, in 2004, was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. Moving forwards in 2018, Don McLean has a new record deal with BMG for the release of his latest album “Botanical Gardens”, supported by international touring including live dates in UK in April and May with dates in Ireland in May and June 2018.

One never knows what Don McLean will do next or when, for that matter. Botanical Gardens is his first studio album since 2009’s Addicted To Black. So it has been a while for McLean but it has been well worth the wait. It is also his 21st album, and the man keeps on finding new things to sing about, and new ways in which to express himself. A true artist.

“I’ll leave you the noise, and the dark city canyons.”, and the album and title track, “Botanical Gardens” have begun. Opening with a standard rock sound, not noisy, but loud, which is an interesting juxtaposition with the subject material of the song. The song, and the album, are a look inwards. This seems to be the overall theme of the album. McLean may look inwards, but the theme and mini themes of this album are universal. Love, relationships, mortality, peace, a troubled world, all get their turns in this garden, and he comes at each topic with typical McLean honesty, wit and humility. He does not have the answers but he does have the questions and the issues to be addressed. Not every song is a manifesto, some are just fun country/rock songs (“Rock ‘n’ Roll Your Baby”) while others are somewhat painful, yet paired with a relatively happy bluesy melody (“I’ve Cried All The Tears I Have”) . There is a lot going on in his Botanical Gardens. “Grief and Hope” is a wonderful song that one could imagine Hank Williams writing had he lived. Well structured, melodic and brilliant lyrics. That is the thing with this album, he writes so incredibly well that the listener almost takes the songs for granted. “When July Comes” is a highlight of the album, a painfully personal song, that is done in the best McLean style, and is the one song that harkens back to his singer/songwriter past. It is a haunting, piano based song with a wonderful string arrangement and I think the best vocals McLean has ever performed. Some of the songs found on this album have been around for a while. He has performed some during his last few tours, but here they sound fresh, and he breathes such life into them that all the songs sound custom made for this release. The album finishes with a beautiful cover of a song made famous by Sinatra, “Last Night When We Were Young”, a beautiful, melancholy song, reflecting on life, age and companionship. It is a beautiful way to end the album and a beautiful bookend with “Botanical Gardens”.

Botanical Gardens is a brilliant album. With McLean embarking on a tour to promote the album, one can only hope that it is not another eight years for a new album from him. In the meantime, there is a lot on this album to enjoy and dig into.

If Carmine has burnt all the stages becoming one of the most original European accordionists in this record of great proof of design and visionary intelligence construction of a story that becomes music and word as well as gesture and sign. Four years after the first album “Solo”, Campania accordionist and composer Carmine Ioanna released the second album “Soli in Viaggio” for the French Bonsai Music (Egea distribution) on June 8th.

The title can be read both as referring to people in the path of their existence (and the song One in Venus is dedicated to the companion of Ioanna) and to solar entities (astrology is the great passions of Ioanna, in fact many of the songs originals have a spatial reference in the title, one above all the song Laika, dedicated to the dog sent into space and destined to death)

The cover image is only 3 depicting the musician and his family, the smallest sun represents the child born recently and the recent birth came the idea of using a drawing as if it had been made by a child.

The record is recorded in quartet with Francesco Savoretti on percussion, Daniele Castellano on guitar and Alex Gorbi on bass and sees the participation as guests of Luca Aquino on trumpet and Rosa D’Agnese on vocals and actress Claudia D’Amico.

Musically it is the first time that electronics are applied to the accordion for an unprecedented sound experimentation in which the look to the future is balanced by an affirmation of their roots with the version of the popular song Sulillo Mio, song of the tradition of Montemarano , village of Irpinia, sung by local women to work in the fields that invoked the end of the hard day, punctuated by the rhythm of the sun, all filtered through the multiple musical influences ranging from folk and ethnic music, to jazz, to blues , to rock.

Taking their name from a Steely Dan song, Deacon Blue were one of the best unknown bands in Scotland. Formed in 1985, the group performed its first concert as the opening act for the Waterboys’ premier show in England. With the vocals of singer/songwriter Ricky Ross backed by jazz and soul-inspired melodies, Deacon Blue recorded several British hits in the late ’80s. Their success, however, failed to carry over to American audiences. Frustrated by the inability to secure international popularity, the group disbanded in the summer of 1994.

Although he launched a solo career, Ross had no greater success than he had as frontman for Deacon Blue. In May 1999, the group re-formed for a series of concerts in Great Britain and Europe. As of November 1999, the group featured Ross and other original bandmembers bassist Ewen Vernal, guitarist Graeme Kelling, keyboardist James Prime, and drummer Dougie Vipond, along with second vocalist Lorraine McIntosh (who had become Ross’ wife after joining the band). Their first new album in five years, the ballads collection Walking Back Home, was released that year, and the full-length studio album Homesick followed in spring 2001.

Guitarist Kelling died of pancreatic cancer in June 2004; Deacon Blue nevertheless vowed to carry on and continued to make intermittent festival appearances through the end of the decade. In 2012, Deacon Blue scheduled a nationwide tour in celebration of their 25th anniversary, and later that year they released their sixth album, The Hipsters, which was produced by Paul Savage (King Creosote, Malcom Middleton, Mogwai). Their seventh studio album, A New House, arrived in 2014. Produced once again by Savage, the album reached the U.K. Top 20 upon its release. The more politically charged Believers appeared in September of 2016, and received positive reviews. The following year Deacon Blue put out Live at the Glasgow Barrowlands, a live set recorded at their hometown’s prestigious venue during the 2016 Believers tour. The performance was significant to the band and its fans, since Deacon Blue played their farewell show at the Barrowlands 22 years previously, prior to their re-formation five years later in 1999. ~ Craig Harris

This was Iggy in his truest form, climbing up from the bottom. There was something about the way he screamed “I got a right” that let you know, he certainly did and he worked it for all it was worth. Maybe not the best production of it’s time but still the most honest. this guy was possessed. Music was a drag and then there was glam. With Nuances, pianist Jeremy Hababou gives us an album of stripped-down, sometimes minimalist, pieces, the reflection of an aesthetic profoundly rooted in his personality. As he likes to say, ” technical mastery of an instrument does not suffice for becoming an artist. Being an artist precedes artistic discipline. Above all, it is a necessity, a sensibility, another way of looking at the world, a quest.”

Composed by Jon Lord and the German composer and conductor Eberhard Schoener, ‘Windows’ was recorded live on June 1st, 1974 at the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz with the Orchestra of the Munich Chamber Opera conducted by Eberhard Schoener. The band for this special occasion is star-studded with musicians like Jon Lord’s former bandmates David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes as well as Tony Ashton, Ray Fenwick and Pete York. Windows consists of two parts. “Continuo on B. A. C. H” is based on an unfinished fugue by J. S. Bach, which was based on a scale using the notes represented by his own name. Lord and Schoener interpreted and ‘finished’ it. “Window” is based on the idea of a form of chain poetry called Renga, developed during the 14th century in Far-East, where a group of poets co-writing would lock themselves away, writing each verse in turn and continue until the finished product emerged. The recording was re-mastered by Rob Cass at Abbey Road Studios and the artwork was reinterpreted.
