The indie pop band “Sheppard” from Australia, known for the hits such as “Geronimo” or “Let me down easy” approached us to create a cover for the newest album titled “Watching The Sky”. This time we decided to use true glass as the essential material. As the result, we blew several dozen little bubbles to create a real glass cloud sculpture. And once again, hand-crafted work turned out to be the greatest choice!

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 45:28 minutes | 541 MB | Genre: Melodic Rock, Hard Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Frontiers Records s.r.l.

Sunstorm is the solo project of hard rock veteran Joe Lynn Turner. Twelve years ago it was the charismatic singer and Frontiers Music president Serafino Perugino that explored options for such an endeavor. Things turned out well with a self-titled debut hitting the shelves in 2006. What started as a project found a continuation over more than a decade with three more records that have been added to the discography of Sunstorm.

2018 is the year of a new album of Joe Lynn Turner and band. The new record is entitled ‘Road to Hell’ and features eleven new songs. What’s immediately recognizable with the new album is an extra portion of heaviness that’s added to this album. Not that Sunstorm turned into a harsh metal outlet, but guitars, done by DGM guitarist Simone Mularoni, got more space. Sunstorm is still about AOR but guitars make things crispier this time.

The uptempo opener ‘Only the Good Will Survive’ is a good example of not solely basing the sound on wide keyboard arrangements. The songs are a perfect start to the album, combining keyboard passages with riff power and Turner’s excellent voice. The album comprises more of these faster songs. ‘Resurrection’, for example, is another one and also ‘Future to Come’ takes the foot off the break.

The title track slows down things. The calmer verse leads to a very rhythmic chorus. Hooks are great with this song that is a true name-giver for the entire album. What’s remarkable is the fact that ‘Road to Hell’ doesn’t really features a cliche ballad. There’s with ‘Everywhere’ a song that’s soulful, but even this track builds up to a more powerful one after a gentle start.

Another highlight is placed more at the end of the tracklist. ‘State of the Heart’ is a grooving melodic rocker that puts a spell on you. Contemporary AOR needs to sound like this song and actually this album. Sunstorm step by step became one of the most important AOR bands these days and if you’re enthusiastic about melodic rock music, there’s no way to get around this album.

British rockers The Darkness will release a live album, “Live At Hammersmith”, on June 15 through Cooking Vinyl. The album captures the bandin sterling form at its London “Tour De Prance” show at the Eventim Hammersmith Apollo on December 10, 2017. The U.S. leg of “Tour De Prance” runs through May 2 in Dallas, Texas, continuing on to its final stop in Mexico City, Mexico on May 4 in support of critically acclaimed new album “Pinewood Smile”. The tour has been blowing minds across the globe, selling out shows in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

“Live At Hammersmith” boasts the band’s spectacular back catalogue of five albums across 19 incendiary tracks. In true DARKNESS spandex-clad fashion, the performance features huge riffs, mighty bass faces, hair-raising falsetto, gigantic disco balls and a whole lotta pyro.

Frontman Justin Hawkins says: “The Darkness is untamed. It cannot be caged. Some very clever recording engineers have discovered a way to capture its essence; all that remains is for us to release it back into the wild.” He continues: “Life is about experiences, not possessions. This is your opportunity to possess the experience of The Darkness live, as perceived by your ears, leaving your eyes free to scan the road ahead for obstacles, or to watch Emmerdale with the sound off, or to mould clay, or to darn socks, or to look at the beautiful artwork in this magnificent gatefold. Release yourself into The Darkness ‘Live At Hammersmith’.”

To celebrate the release of “Live At Hammersmith”, two songs from the live album are available for streaming now and as instant-grat downloads with pre-orders. The tracks include the swashbuckling “Pinewood Smile” highlight “Buccaneers Of Hispaniola” and the smash hit “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” from The Darkness’s four-times-platinum-selling debut album “Permission To Land”.

The fifth full-length release for the British glam-metal band is its first with new drummer Rufus Tiger Taylor (son of Queen’s Roger Taylor) and was produced by Adrian Bushy.

The fifth full-length release and the first Darkness outing for Cooking Vinyl, Pinewood Smile is also the inaugural studio jaunt for new drummer Rufus Tiger Taylor (son of Queen’s Roger Taylor), who took over for Emily Dolan Davies after the release of 2015’s excellent Last of Our Kind. Less seaworthy than its predecessor but delivered with the same freewheeling sonic brinksmanship, Pinewood Smile feels both rote and ready; a fully stocked tinder box with nary a match in sight. To be fair, Last of Our Kind was almost too good of a distillation of what makes the Darkness so compelling — at their best, they’re a near perfect amalgam of Thin Lizzy, Queen, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC; both self-aware and hopelessly in love with the dumb pageantry of rock & roll. Unsurprisingly, it’s the LP’s three singles (“All the Pretty Girls,” “Solid Gold,” and “Southern Trains”) that recapture that magic, delivering just the right balance of pomp and grit — the ludicrous, swashbuckling send-up “Buccaneers of Hispaniola” and similarly Monty Python-esque sister track “Japanese Prisoner of Love” might be growers. Also, the soulful, R&B-kissed “Why Don’t the Beautiful Cry?” and the atypically self-conscious “I Wish I Was in Heaven,” the latter of which very frankly examines the group’s post-Permission to Land struggles, prove that Justin Hawkins is more than just an extraordinarily gifted party metal ponce. That said, at a very economical ten tracks, Pinewood Smile should be all killer no filler, but late-album offerings like the vapid “Happiness” and the infantile no-fatties ballad “Stampede of Love” — Spinal Tap’s “Big Bottom” was ludicrous and infantile, but it wasn’t cruel — suck some air out of the room, making the whole thing feel a little stale, which is the last thing you want from a project that so fetishizes another era.

Tim Garland – Weather Walker (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz  | Time – 57:58 minutes | 614 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Edition Records

Weather Walker, the monumental, atmospheric and unfailingly melodic new orchestral album from one of Europe’s most prolific composers and instrumentalists, Tim Garland, takes its inspiration from The Lake District in the North West of England. Tim is a musician with equal talent and scope both as a performer and composer and Weather Walker showcases his sheer brilliance and ambition, confirming his reputation as one of contemporary music’s most forward-thinking figures. Recorded at the iconic Abbey Road Studio 1 with a 43 piece string section, this epic production contains some of his best large ensemble writing. Uniting his regular collaborators, pianist Rebello and bassist Gabolev, with a 35 piece string orchestra, Weather Walker is also a first-time collaboration with the exciting and progressive German pianist Pablo Held, a musician with an equally strong sense of harmony and freedom of expression.

For Weather Walker, the inspiration came from the Lake District, as Tim explains: ‘It was at the Lakes that I first had the sensation that it is us, human beings, that nature permits to live here, and not us permitting and cultivating nature where we choose to allow it! I’ve felt this in lots of places around the globe since then, but because this is my home country and early memories linger, The Lakes, which has a melancholy beauty even throughout the cold grey months, remains magical. Given the inspiring visual setting of this music, it is naturally cinematic’.

Trillium – Tectonic (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 44:04 minutes | 526 MB | Genre: Symphonic Metal

Is it any wonder that it has taken vocalist Amanda Somerville seven years to return to her Trillium project? She’s been busy contributing her voice to ninety percent of European symphonic melodic metal bands, from After Forever to Xandria. But now she returns to her three-petaled flower musical project with Tectonic, with her husband, guitarist Sander Gommans, by her side.

Once more Ms Somerville returns to the genre she knows best, melodic heavy metal with symphonic synth embellishment. Expanding that a tad more, you can expect mixed pacing, with tempos from steady heavy metal to swift power metal. Also, the rhythm section delivers plenty of rock groove, and the bass line is significantly heard in most songs. Of course, perhaps the sin qua non of true heavy metal, there are plenty of crisp and soaring guitar solos from Gommans, but also Trillium live veteran, Paul Owsinski. Completing the circle, as a vocalist, Ms Somerville has some significant range, singing melodic with both power and restraint. There’s always clarity, and never a breath of straining in her presentation.

Here’s a few song highlights to pique your interest. Something of personal inspiration comes with Time To Shine and Stand Up, both rather uplifting metal songs. The former features a light vocal breakdown for Somerville after the mid point. The latter song offers bracing riffs, rock groove, and a killer chorus. With Nocturna, you get something of a heavy metal anthem, where light parts, often with the vocals, intersect with more heavy parts. I also thought, through the vocals, the song had an almost operatic feeling. Within Shards, you’ll hear almost all those aforementioned musical elements mentioned in the previous paragraph. But most notable is the keen rock groove and the bristling guitar work. The album closes with a simple symphonic ballad where Somerville sings mostly over piano, sending chills down your spine. All said, Tectonic is quintessential Trillium, with Amanda Somerville once more stunning us with her beautiful voice in the context of the symphonic melodic metal she loves. Easily recommended.

An album of reconstructions and remixes, revealing some of the lovely, secret perspectives hidden in Yasmine’s Hamdan impressive, successful second album ‘Al Jamilat’, courtesy of 9 distinguished artists and producers. These include the mighty Parisian electronic music crew Acid Arab, Chilean maverick Matias Aguayo, elegant German ensemble Brandt Brauer Frick, Berlin techno artist Shed, Crammed’s own Greg Bauchau, Cubenx from Mexico, Olga Kouklaki from Greece, and mysterious, reclusive Middle-Eastern produced George Bshoum. Yasmine Hamdan herself has contributed a great remix of “La Chay”.

A proper icon in the Arab world, which she subjugates and irritates at the same time with her freedom and swaying of the hips, Lebanese Yasmine Hamdan is releasing the spin-off of her third solo album, Al Jamilat (recorded in the studio of Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and released in 2017), with a remix album straightforwardly titled Jamilat Reprise. An exercise in style that lends itself nicely to the personality of an artist who has flirted with electronic music throughout her career, from her first band Soapkills, which revealed her onto the independent scene, before expanding her horizons, at first with Y.A.S., the duo she formed with Mirwais for the album Arabology, then with Jim Jarmush’s film Only Lovers Left Alive selected at the Cannes film festival in 2013. She who “dreaded sounding like world music” surrounded herself with a rock-solid cast of reputable producers, including Parisian duo Acid Arab, who borrow Café’s guitar riff and loop it on an 80s electro beat full of torpor, the elegant Mexican composer Cubenx, from the label InFiné, who remixes the characteristic trip-hop sounds of K2 and the creative German trio Brandt Brauer Frick who reinterpret Choubi in their distinctive style. Another highlight is the version ofAl Jamilat by Matias Aguayo, the founder of the precious label Cómeme, who took this opportunity to dive deep in his “hypnotic percussions that send people into a trance”, as well as La Ba’den revisited by Shed, a highly respected producer on the contemporary techno scene, who signs here one of the most beautiful tracks of an album where no one is aiming straight for the dance floor, each artist seemingly searching for the special sensitivity emanating from each song of the immensely gifted Lebanese singer.  –  Smaël Bouaici

Yellow Days – Is Everything Okay In Your World! (2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 57:54 minutes | 599 MB | Genre: Pop
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Columbia

Yellow Days arrived on the scene with his debut EP, Harmless Melodies, last November and it was a delight. Produced in his bedroom, it mixed slacker rock, funk-infused beats with husky, Paolo Nutini-esque vocals. His debut LP, Is Everything Okay in Your World? arrives on the back of a soldout debut tour and it’s fantastic. An authentic neo-soul, jazz-influenced record that keeps all the best things from the EP, but with a confident panache.

‘A Bag of Dutch’ is the opening song to the album. Arguably the most traditional Yellow Days song, it’s a meandering, short piece of blue wave. Lead single ‘That Easy’ follows, which showcases George van den Broek’s rasping vocals. He calls it, “An account of where I am now after the EP, and saying I’m not going to give up and going to give it everything I have basically”. It’s the most positive song on the album and testament to his adaptability. He makes everything sound easy when in actual fact it’s multi-layered, gleaming with awesome productions.

‘The Tree I Climb’ is where Is Everything Okay in Your World? becomes an entirely different record. Employing trumpeter Nick Walters, it’s almost an out-and-out jazz song. For an 18-year-old, Yellow Days’ musical theory and whereabouts is astonishing. It’s baffling to even think about just how good he can become. From here, the album is a real slice of modern soul, the likes of which David Bowie was experimenting with on his on albums Let’s Dance and Modern Love.

Single ‘Holding On’ is next. Described by George as a track, “About living your life in a manner that you’re always holding on, finding day-to-day life hard. It’s about modern depression”, it’s a song steeped in sadness with an upbeat hook. It’s a distorted, gloomy, stirring number that fuses the grainy tones of George’s voice with precarious guitar lines, jerking percussion and forlorn piano inflections.

Yellow Days has never sounded better than ‘I Believe in Love’, a song that flaunts his soulful tones perfectly. This is a real follow on from his debut EP, which was about breaking up with his girlfriend, showing that he’s in a much more positive frame of mind. Yellow Days told Wonderland it’s “About believing in love despite the pain that goes on when you’re with someone. For me, love is a reason not to give up on your life. The sheer power of love makes it the one most meaningful thing that you can find/experience on this Earth, so regardless of the hurt as a romantic I will chase that feeling to find a true honest love”. ‘I Believe in Love’, once again, shows the maturity and sophistication of Yellow Days. Compared to what has come previously, his musical sound and lyrics have grown immensely.

The best song on the album falls slap bang in the middle. ‘Lately I’, which features rapper and former tour mate Rejjie Snow, is a masterful mix of Yellow Days’ trademark, lo-fi, chilled slacker pop with Rejjie Snow’s jazz-style rap. It’s attestation to Yellow Days’ quality as an artist to draft in someone of the quality of Rejjie Snow on his debut album and it gives the album a completely different layer.

From there, the album begins to wind down. Both ‘I’ve Been Thinking Too Hard’ and ‘Tired’ are sample-heavy (in the vein of Paolo Nutini’s ‘Iron Sky’), nearly out-and-out jazz tracks, while ‘Hurt in Love’ once again blends George’s expressive voice with a tenacious backing, but places the practically wounded vocals with a corrupt backing composition.

Finishing with ‘Outro (Lost in a World With You)’, a track that could have been on John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, the album is almost an accompaniment to his debut EP, Harmless Melodies, continuing his themes of relationships and love. This time, however, there’s a much more positive thread running through the album and its sheer musicality is light years ahead of what he attempted on Harmless Melodies. It’s perhaps a tad too long, but everything it attempts it does with emotional depth and musical integrity. Ultimately, Yellow Days is an extraordinary artist who likes to push himself into new genres and areas of music. It’s got as much in common with the likes of Miles Davis and Marvin Gaye as it does Mac DeMarco and Cosmo Pyke. Is Everything Okay in Your World? Is an excellent neo-soul album featuring samples and reverb and there’s not an album like it this year, or indeed, most years. ~ Liam McMillen

Draped in loud resort-wear shirts, Yung Gravy stands out in a crowded field of MCs. But what really sets him apart are the lewd and absurd rhymes that pour out of his mouth. It’s an equal mix of Lil Yachty’s showboating, Yellowman’s slackness, and Bloodhound Gang’s cheeky wit—all smoothly dressed with trap beats and classic samples. Two things are on Gravy’s mind on Snow Cougar: flossing hard and getting down with your mom. “1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot” won’t win any political-correctness awards, but after one listen, you will hum it endlessly and hate yourself. His 2016 viral hit “Mr. Clean” is also here, complete with its Billy Mays reference and generous Chordettes “Mr. Sandman” samples. FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz  | Time – 47:07 minutes | 577 MB | Genre: Pop Rock, Indie Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Blackout Problems

The first sounds of “How Are You Doing”, the opener of the second blackout problem album “Kaos”, captivate immediately. You want to move, you want to sing along. At the same time, the LP can not be forced into any genre right from the beginning – every song sounds different. While “How Are You Doing” is reminiscent of Biffy Clyro, the single-song title song is more like the sound of The 1975. The mix of alternative, indie and sometimes electronic sounds makes the album more versatile than the Munich band’s recent releases.

While the quartet is musically convincing and a clear progression can be felt, the lyrics are still not fully developed. Of course, the blackout problems have a lot to tell and say, but lyrical sophistication is sought in vain. »Kaos« addresses insecurity, doubt and resignation, it describes situations in which life suddenly begins to crumble and one loses the ground under one’s feet. Through such strong content and the even stronger musical development can be overlooked over the lyrical weakness quite. Blackout problems do what many young British and American bands fail to do: they leave a lasting impression.

After the enormous success of his previous singles such as “Evil Twin” and “Morphine”, the young producer is back with his much-awaited 12-track debut. The title might not say it, but the album is inspired by the sentiment of angst and being lost, when you are in between two phases of life: being a kid and a full realized adult. The moment when you are trying to find yourself, and your place in this world.

“Incredibles 2” is a 2018 American 3D computer-animated superhero film, produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. Written and directed by Brad Bird, it is the sequel to 2004’s The Incredibles. The plot follows the Parr family as they attempt to put superheroes back in the spotlight while dealing with normal life, only to combat a new foe who seeks to turn the general public against all supers. While several of the characters and voices from the previous film return, the sequel includes new characters voiced by Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Sophia Bush and Bill Wise. Michael Giacchino returned to write the score.

Composer Michael Giacchino grew up fascinated with both movies and music, and he went on to an ideal career writing scores for a number of acclaimed films, television series, and video games. Giacchino was born in Riverside Township, New Jersey on October 10, 1967 and grew up in nearby Edgewater Park. As a child, he developed an interest in animation and began making stop-motion cartoons, but discovered his favorite part was selecting the music that would match the action. After high school, Giacchino received a degree in film production at New York’s School of Visual Arts, and then went on to study music at Lincoln Center’s Julliard School. Giacchino supported himself as a publicist for the New York offices of Universal Pictures and Disney, and after completing his studies, he relocated to Burbank, California, where he worked for Disney’s feature film publicity department. He moved on to Disney Interactive, assisting with production on video game projects as he continued to hone his craft in music.

After contributing music to several Disney games, he took a position with Dreamworks Interactive in 1997 and scored the video game The Lost World: Jurassic Park, released as a tie-in with the sci-fi blockbuster; the same year, he also scored a low-budget live-action thriller, Legal Deceit. Giacchino composed scores for a number of other video games, including the Medal of Honor and Call of Duty franchises, and in 2001, when producer J.J. Abrams was assembling his creative team for the television series Alias, he invited Giacchino to write music for the show, having been impressed with his video game work.

After working together successfully on Alias, Abrams hired Giacchino to compose music for the cult favorite series Lost, which earned him a Grammy Award for Outstanding Dramatic Score in 2005; Giacchino also wrote music for Abrams’ short-lived but critically acclaimed show Fringe. In 2004, Brad Bird invited Giacchino to write the music for the Pixar animated feature The Incredibles; it was the first of several projects he scored for Pixar, including Ratatouille, Cars 2, and Up, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award in 2010, as well as a Grammy Award for the film’s soundtrack album.

Since then, Giacchino has maintained a busy schedule scoring major projects such as Mission Impossible III, Cloverfield, Star Trek (2009), Let Me In, and Super 8. Giacchino also occasionally writes symphonic pieces, including “Camden 2000,” which was commissioned for Camden, New Jersey’s Haddonfield Symphony and debuted at a fundraising event for the non-profit Heart of Camden Housing Corporation. Giacchino also wrote new music to accompany the Space Mountain ride at Disney theme parks in the United States and Hong Kong.

He was involved with a number of high-profile film projects in 2015, which would prove to be a banner year for the composer. Reuniting with director Brad Bird and Pixar, he scored the animated film Inside Out, as well as Disney’s futuristic Tomorrowland and, biggest of all, the summer blockbuster Jurassic World. The following year, Giacchino returned with several more high-profile productions, including scores for Doctor Strange, Star Trek Beyond, and Zootopia.

Also in 2016, it was announced that he had replaced composer Alexandre Desplat on director Gareth Edwards’ highly anticipated Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The score was released alongside the movie in December 2016, and was commended for its fresh, innovative sound palette while incorporating favorite and revered elements of John Williams’ score for the previous Star Wars installments. In 2017, Giacchino supplied three more blockbuster scores with The War for the Planet of the Apes, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Disney/Pixar’s Coco. Another Disney/Pixar effort, Incredibles 2, arrived in 2018, along with his second outing with the dinosaurs on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. ~ Mark Deming

Described as a little bit Country and a little bit rock n’ roll, California recording artist Pearl Aday will follow up her critically acclaimed 2010 debut with her new release, “Heartbreak and Canyon Revelry,” on June 15. The album will be released through newly formed Station House Recordings and distributed worldwide via The Orchard. Braving and unearthing many emotions, Pearl Aday joined forces with Jim Wilson, longtime bassist for Daniel Lanois, Emmylou Harris, and leader of Motor Sister and Mother Superior, for the project, and once again proves how she is every inch a rock chanteuse who seamlessly moves from vulnerable to guttural in one measure. The dynamic duo co-wrote the first ten tracks of “Heartbreak and Canyon Revelry;” with the final track, “Let It Go,” being an original version of a Mother Superior tune.

The work of Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin can be found across the musical landscape. The men have contributed to music by Quincy Jones, Kendrick Lamar, Common, Kanye West, Mos Def and Q-Tip, to name just a few, and now they’ve teamed up with jazz trumpeter Christian Scott, bassist Derrick Hodge, drummer Justin Tyson and multi-instrumentalist Taylor McFerrin to form R+R=NOW, a band packed with influence from multiple musical genres, including jazz, soul, R&B and hip-hop.

According to Glasper, R+R NOW tells “our story from our point of view. Everybody’s sound is so different, but we all come from the same concrete garden. Its a very honest, fluid sound that rings of hip-hop, EDM, jazz, at times – hell – reggae … a bunch of cats that respect each other so much that we always pass the ball.”

Sonia Leigh is set to release her full-length live album on 15th June, 2018, paralleling her summer UK festival performances Sonia Leigh moved around frequently throughout her childhood, spending time in five states across the Bible Belt and Midwest. This filled her early life with changing scenery and half-packed moving boxes. Throughout, though, music remained a constant presence. “Growing up, my dad played music,” Sonia told Curve magazine, “He was a writer, and I’d listen to his songs that he wrote and I’d steal his guitar. As soon as I learned a few chords and I could change them fast enough, I started writing songs too.” Sonia became colored in many genres of music along her way. Influenced at a young age by her grandfather singing Hank Williams songs at family gatherings, soaking up her father’s own writing and record collection. It’s no surprise to mention her mothers classic rock favorites crept in and held a major roll in shaping her talents. In her early teens, the angst of the then-emerging grunge scene immediately set fire to a brand new trail and opened up a whole new world for Sonia’s musical wanderlust . Naturally, Sonia drew on every influence when she began writing and performing her own material, which she’s done since she began dreaming up her own songs in her bedroom. Along the way, this shape shifting singer-songwriter has honed both her craft and evolved her own genre-crossing style. “I grew up listening to country music with my Dad,” Sonia remembers, “but rock slowly became one of the biggest parts of the picture. I just loved it all, and I wanted to play it all. I was never someone who wanted to play only one style. I just wanted to play music.” Sonia’s passion for music transcends genres’ boxed-in boundaries, enabling her to maintain an expressive individuality, with energy and edge. She’s toured across the world with the likes of Melissa Etheridge, Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, and country legends such as Willie Nelson and Loretta Lynn. Back in her adopted hometown of Nashville, she’s become a popular songwriter on Music Row, with a pair of #1 hits to her name: Zac Brown Band’s ‘Goodbye in Her Eyes’ and ‘Sweet Annie’ (both featured on the Grammy-winning album ‘Uncaged’). Sonia Leigh has earned a reputation as a songwriter who stretches country music far beyond its traditional limits. Now, continuing to develop her solo career, working with new sounds, collaborators, and jumping genre boundaries with ease. Sonia is drawing in and on everything from pop. hip hop melodies and country storytelling to the no-rules spirit of grunge, combined with the energy of rock & roll. Catchy hooks and clever lyrics are Sonia Leigh’s trademarks. Her 11-track studio album ‘Sonia Leigh and Friends Live in London: Studio 3 Sessions’ shows an organic, honest, and raw approach. Recorded at the iconic Abbey Road Studios Sonia collaborates with hand selected UK musicians/artists including, James Tranter, James Dudley and Luke Davis from Broken Witt Rebels, sprinkled with a collection of surprise cameo’s. From the smokey vocals and catapulting guitar’s on ‘Jack is Back’ to the upbeat classic rock nod of ‘Alabama Bound’ and the witty, worldly-wise lyrics of ‘My Name is Money’, there are many gems on Sonia Leigh’s latest effort. Surprises such as a beautiful piano rendition of Claude Debussy’s ‘Clair de Lune’ and a never before recorded version of her penned number one hit for Zac Brown Band “Sweet Annie”. including a Tom Wait’s group sing along coupled with some brand new songs. There is something for everyone here.

I was worried for a start, worried that Albany-based pop punkers State Champs would be treading down the much maligned, sugar-coated radio-pop route. The been-there-done-that “whoa-oh-oh” gang vocals that announce lead single “Dead and Gone” has the John Feldmann stigma written all over it (one of the three producers on this album, mind you) and it detracts from what is otherwise, a rock solid pop-punk tune ‒ complete with a memorable chorus. Fortunately, “Dead and Gone” is the only track on State Champs third LP, Living Proof, that features full-on pop sensibilities and almost sticks out like a sore thumb because of it. Make no mistake; Living Proof is an absolute shot in the arm, with frenzied, white knuckle pop-punk bangers permeating a majority of the track listing. While palate cleansers do arise, they feel more like they exist solely for the sake of providing the album with some much needed breathing room in light of all the explosive, feel-good energy that rests at the core of the album.

Frontman Derek Discanio’s vocal chops have always been the clear highlight of State Champs’ sound, and once again he proves his worth with some of the most exuberant and impressive sounding vocal melodies this side of the pop-punk genre, with moments that are guaranteed to send chills down your spine. Just listen as he belts his heart out in the chorus on the kinetic track “Lightning” ‒ possibly the heaviest sounding State Champs tune to date, with a bridge section that incentives movement. Elsewhere, Discanio consistently one-ups himself on a track-to-track basis, with every successive track packing a bigger, more infectious chorus than the last. Opener “Criminal” perfectly sets the stage for what follows and also proves just how far State Champs has come instrumentally since their stripped down 2013 debut The Finer Things. Evan Ambrosio’s drumming is absolutely superb, with tons of tasteful triplet fills and ghost notes laced throughout his performance.

The guitar work is also the most dynamic yet on a State Champs LP, with funkier leanings, such as the beautiful intro to the excellent “Frozen” or the picture-esque riffing occurring in the bridge of “Crystal Ball”. Much how the band’s fellow pop-punk peers Neck Deep doubled down on their sound on 2015’s excellent Life’s Not Out To Get You, State Champs has taken a similar approach here. This is an extremely uplifting and summer primed record that is concerned only with getting listeners to bang their heads and sing along. “Something About You” may very well feature the best chorus melody that the band has ever penned and beautifully balances stripped down verses with a larger-than-life refrain and closer “Sidelines” ‒ with its start-and-stop dynamics and tasteful lead riffs ‒ perfectly closes out the album with a cacophanous bang.

A Slight Case of Overbombing gathered together material from goth merchants the Sisters of Mercy’s three major-label releases. That fact immediately sets the stage for complaints from longtime fans desiring their indie music. However, for the listener more familiar with the band’s mid- to late-’80s college radio tracks, this is a very good collection. The lyrics are rather pointless and Andrew Eldritch’s vocals lack dynamics, but his singing has personality that overcomes his limitations. It’s the edgy, hard gothic rock of the music that is their strength. There’s an undeniable pull to songs like the galloping “This Corrosion” or the epic “More” (both produced by Jim Steinman). There’s also a mix of “Temple of Love,” featuring Ofra Haza, and an unreleased track, “Under the Gun.” Not essential, but a good record for the casual fan (although more extensive liner notes would have been nice).

The divertimento as a musical genre dates back to the nineteenth century. Divertimenti were composed for various social occasions and were intended to be light, uncomplicated and cheerful. Such pieces were often scored for small string ensemble. Over the years this effortless, elegant form has appeared in many different musical styles and, to a large extent, set the standard for the virtuosic chamber music we know today.

This breathtaking album explores the form as composed by Bartok, Britten, Bjorklund, and Bacewicz.
