FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 30:43 minutes | 607 MB | Genre: Indie Folk

The Saxophones began as the solo project of Erenkov – a project that was loosely started over a decade ago but gained full momentum and dedication in recent years – he wanted to bring in some primitive drum and percussion playing and couldn’t think of anyone more suited than his wife. “I wanted to share the band with her,” he says. “Plus, I would be devastated if I had to leave for weeks at a time to tour without her.”The songs which make up the debut album were formed and written during a period in which the pair were living on a boat during a very wet winter in the San Francisco Bay Area. “Much of the music was written over rainy mornings on acoustic guitar inside the cabin of our boat and outside of the city in a little guesthouse in Pt. Reyes,” he reflects. It was then recorded in Portland over 10 days, the recording was an intense and occasionally tense process. Taking inspiration from 1950s exotica and Hawaiian albums (Edhen Abhez, Buddy Fo, and Martin Denny), 1970s outsider Italian songwriter Vittorio Impiglia, and a host of third-stream and West coast jazz records, the result is a unique offering.

The Surprise Package – Columbia Singles (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz  | Time – 14:19 minutes | 272 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Columbia – Legacy

Surprise Package was a 1960s rock band, recording on Columbia Records. They consisted of Fred Zeufeldt (drums, backing vocals), Michael Rogers (piano, organ, bass, backing vocals), Greg Beck (guitar, backing vocals) and Rob Lowery (lead vocals). They had several hits, including The Other Me, written by Jimmy Griffin and Michael Z. Gordon (1967).

The Surprise Package was one of the top 60’s Northwest psychedelic rock bands from the greater Seattle area. They were originally called the Viceroys, and had a Northwest instrumental hit called Granny’s Pad. The band consisted of Greg Beck (guitar, vocals), Kim Eggers (lead vocals & Sax), Michael Rogers (piano, organ, bass, vocals) and Fred Zeufeldt (drums, vocals). In 1966 after doing some Dick Clark Where the Action Is tours and shows with their friends Paul Revere and the Raiders, they recorded some songs on Columbia Records, produced by Jerry Fuller. During a mixdown session, Lou Adler (the Mamas and Papas producer) suggested the name ‘The Surprise Package’ to replace the dated ‘Viceroys’ handle. They recorded four songs under Fuller’s production: Eastside, Westside, Going Out of My Mind, The Merry Go Round, and The Other Me, written by Jimmy Griffin and Michael Z. Gordon in 1967. Unfortunately, Columbia apparently had too many artists to market, so The Surprise Package got very little promotion. In late 1967, Kim Eggers left the band and singer Rob Lowrey was hired to replace him. In 1968 they recorded an album called Free Up for Lee Hazlewood’s LHI-label, which spun off two singles as well: the title track and their version of MacArthur Park in 1969. In 1970, Mike Rogers left the band, they then added Gene Hubbard on keys and became American Eagle.

Thierry Maillard Big Band – Pursuit of Happiness (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 01:00:15 minutes | 1,16 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Ilona Records

After a long discographic and scenic experience in the field of jazz, where Thierry Maillard has already been able to explore all the different facets of this music, from solo piano to septet, through the trio of course, and several orchestral experiences with strings ( especially with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra), Thierry Maillard realizes the work of his life, with the creation of this exceptional big band, which synthesizes all its influences and its various musical experiences, in a great melodic, harmonic and rhythmic whirlwind, for the pleasure of all, and pursuing happiness, of course!

After fourteen albums published in twenty years, Thierry Maillard realizes his most ambitious and crazy dream: a record for a big band of fifteen musicians chosen among the most emblematic of French jazz. Abundant compositions specially written for this grandiose project. A music that is both demanding and playful for a permanent fireworks where the beauty of the melodies is carried by a relentless volcanic groove. The major work of a musician as endearing as inspiring! Rich and dense compositions, with many colors and contrasts. A wonderfully structured music, with a stack of magical and secret drawers, and beautiful Russian dolls that fit into each other. A complex and rigorous musical writing, which requires a lot of concentration and commitment on the part of the musicians, but which is at the same time of a relatively easy access for the listeners, who are constantly transported by haunting and guided melodies by an irresistibly groovy rhythm. The influences of Thierry Maillard are diverse and varied, the lyricism and romanticism of classical music of course, the rhythmic force of jazz-rock, the daring of contemporary music, the elegance and the swing of the golden age of jazz. An obvious passion for the world of Frank Zappa who has integrated all these influences in his own music, for Bartok too, with his famous concerto for orchestra. An immoderate love for the harmonious melodies and audacities of Bill Evans and Chick Corea, and then an important album that served as a catalyst for “Pursuit Of Happiness”, it is about “Wide Angles” that Michael Brecker published in 2003 and where he was magnificently surrounded by an orchestra of wood, brass, and strings (arranged by Gil Goldstein).

After writing the eight compositions of “Pursuit Of Happiness” and decided that the recording would happen far from Paris, in the beautiful setting of the foothills of the Cevennes, in Pompignan, in the studio Recall of the friend Philippe Gaillot, Thierry Maillard had more than to choose the seasoned musicians, ready to take up this incredible orchestral challenge. A big band of fifteen musicians who are practically all leaders and although they knew each other for the most part, they had never played together. It was necessary to learn to “ring” together, to adjust his instrument to others, and to bring a collective and orchestral instrumental color from fifteen instrumentalists who each have their individuality and singularity. The rhythmic nucleus of this big band is Thierry Maillard on piano, Hadrien Féraud on electric bass and Yoann Schmidt on drums. Together, they bring the foundations of energy, the roots of feeling, and the explosion of a permanent groove that will irrigate the entire orchestra. A set of five brass instruments: Claude Egéa and David Enhco on trumpets, Daniel Zimmermann and Sébastien Llado on trombones, and Didier Havet on tuba. Brilliant brass that sparkles constantly, with both finesse and power, and to which Thierry Maillard has left a lot of space where everyone can express themselves through flamboyant chorus: Claude Egea on Modern Times, David Enhco on Unknown Planet, Daniel Zimmermann and Sébastien Llado on The Dream Is Over. A desk of six woods in rich and varied colors with Ludivine Issambourg on the alto flute, Christophe Zoogonès on the flute, Stéphane Chausse on the clarinet, bass clarinet, and alto sax, Lucas Saint-Cricq on the alto and baritone saxophones, Stéphane Guillaume soprano and tenor saxophones, and Samy Thiébault on tenor sax. These six musicians will also each be honored in the compositions of Thierry Maillard. Stéphane Chausse’s clarinet on Diverging, Ludivine Issambourg’s alto flute on Hurricane, Christophe Zoogonès’ flute on Modern Times, Stéphane Guillaume’s impressive soprano sax on Pursuit Of Happiness, Lucas Saint-Cricq’s alto sax on Albatros, and Samy Thiébault’s tenor sax on Hurricane. Finally, on two titles, we note the presence of a guest of honor, a particularly delirious and inventive guest, a singular musician and real man-orchestra all by himself: the troublemaker Médéric Collignon! With his explosive horn game and the strong expressiveness of his vocals, he brings a touch of madness and poetry to Diverging and Albatross.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 56:30 minutes | 1,11 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Jazz Eleven

Bassist Thomas Bramerie has about a hundred records as sideman, but this is his first personal album on show, full of a busy career. For Side Stories, he surrounds himself with two talented young musicians: the pianist Carl-Henri Morisset, who studied at the Paris Conservatory, with Pierre de Bethmann and Hervé Sellin, and recorded My Chet my song with Ricardo Del Fra; and then the drummer Elie Martin-Charrière who, after passing by the Conservatory of Beaunes and Chalon, became the pupil of Dré Pallemaerts at the Conservatoire de Paris.

On different beaches, he also welcomes old acquaintances: Stéphane Belmondo on trumpet and bugle, Jacky Terrasson on piano and Eric Legnini on Fender Rhodes.

Thomas Bramerie offers a varied repertoire in the image of his eclectic career: nine original compositions, two classics (one of Monk, the other of Nat Adderley), a composition of Edward Elgar (Salut d’amour from 1888) and two songs (One day you’ll see and With time).

The album opens on the very short Pichot Bebei played solo. It also closes on a splendid and sensitive version of With the time of Ferré: a little like Jean-Paul Celea had transfigured the Do not leave me of Brel (album Passaggio).

Six tracks are played in trio with Morisset and Charrière: a vigorous Played twice of Monk, other themes are played with the same nervous rhythm (Work Song of Adderley and the original composition Yeïnou), some with a flamboyant lyricism (Sing, Emile, Hi d’amour), always with a very present melodic bass.

On two themes (Here and All alone), the Fender Rhodes by Eric Legnini comes to mirror the piano. Now is played by Jacky Terrasson with the sense of rhythm that we know him. As for Stéphane Belmondo, he comes to affix his velvet paw on three melodies: the song One day you’ll see; Tròç de vida, with a Brazilian-style guitar played by Bramerie and Side Stories, with Jacky Terrasson.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 41:07 minutes | 451 MB | Genre: Dream Pop, New Wave
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Reprise

Caer (pronounced: kaair) is the artist’s fourth album to date. Falling is a theme that surfaces throughout the album, which is why Lewis called it Caer the Spanish word for “to fall.” The album serves as a powerful lens through which Lewis explores his own personal sense of falling, as well as what he has observed about a world that feels as if it’s declining. On a larger scale, Caer feels extraordinarily current, given what’s going on culturally and politically right now.

Since the epiphany of Forget, a melodic factory operating at full pelt, including Tyrant Destroyer, Yellow Balloon, I Can’t Wait, Castles in the Snow or  Slow brought 2010 to a beautiful close, Twin Shadow has put out some very curious works. Confess leant on brilliantly-polished synths, while the guitar pop ofEclipse, recorded at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery sniffs disquietingly around the death of Santa Monica Boulevard. Its lo.fi fragility inherited from Morrissey, exalted by Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear, has faded. Georges Lewis Jr, alias Twin Shadow, marks its passing with a geometric pop, cut in perfectly straight lines. It’s quite an aesthetic. Early fans might drop it – if they haven’t given up on it in advance – with a sense of bitterness; but people who liked Eclipse will surely love it.  – Charlotte Saintoin

Following his work on one of the most successful franchises in recent memory: Marvel’s ‘Guardians of The Galaxy’ and ‘John Wick’, Tyler Bates returns with his Original Motion Picture Score for the sequel to the smash-hit ‘Deadpool’. Deadpool 2 stars Golden Globes nominee Ryan Reynolds as iconic antihero Wade Wilson, alongside Morena Baccarin (Homeland, V). Bates has become not only an artisan at architecting music for film, television, and video games, but an in-demand multi-instrumentalist, writer, and producer.

Action comedies in which the protagonist (played by Ryan Reynolds) is an offbeat and insolent superhero/antihero, the Deadpool saga spoofs comic books without laying it on too thick. While self-mockery is the hallmark of what is and always has been a cult series, the music is, contrariwise, played straight, as it the hard and fast action that surrounds this madcap humour. Following Junkie XL, it’s Tyler Bates, a composer who was drawn to film maker David Leitch (Atomic Blonde), who has been tasked with bringing out the big guns. “The music’s role isn’t to add comedy, it’s already funny as hell. It’s mostly to stay out of the way and complement the action and emotional scenes”, says the author of the scores to Watchmen and John Wick.  On top of electronic and symphonic colours that are generally considered de rigeur for contemporary action films, Tyler Bates has added a touch of rock to the musical sauce, in particular using a distorted guitar with a wah-wah pedal (Hello Super Powers). Choirs play an important role in this soundtrack, in particular in the piece Fighting Dirty. It contributes, as much as the percussion section, to the extraordinary power of this remarkably effective soundtrack, which is sure to win over fans of musical testosterone. – Nicolas Magenham

“Visions of the Emerald Beyond” is an album by the jazz fusion group Mahavishnu Orchestra, and the second released by its second incarnation. As the second album to document the second Mahavishnu Orchestra, this one isn’t as, well, apocalyptic as its predecessor, yet it does focus more intently on the band itself.

Jean-Luc Ponty’s curling electric violin lines help give this Mahavishnu band a more European sound than its predecessor, and some of the orchestral concepts of Apocalypse work their way into the picture via comments by a string trio and trumpet/sax duo. This band also had some interest in a bombastic funk direction that may have been borrowed from Mr. “Chameleon” Herbie Hancock, and would later be followed by Mahavishnu Two’s drummer, Michael Walden. Gayle Moran’s ethereal vocals don’t date as badly as those on many jazz-rock records; at least she can sing. Overall, this Mahavishnu edition is more refined and not as aggressive as the first – although they could charge ahead pretty hard, as “Be Happy” and “On the Way Home to Earth” demonstrate – yet they were still capable of making memorable electric music.

One of America’s greatest gospel groups, The Stars of Faith was founded in 1958 by five members of the legendary Clara Ward Singers. Faith performed at the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, and Madison Square Garden. They performed and toured with famed poet Langston Hughes’ Broadway play Black Nativity, gave a command performance for the English Royal Family, and appeared in Berlin with the Reverend Martin Luther King in front of a crowd of 20,000. Recorded live during a three-month European tour in 1969 the album represents an apotheosis of Afro-American gospel.

Keep On Living features Sadie Keys’ jazzy lead, followed by Frances Steadman’s inventive, subtle rendition of the traditional gospel Anyhow. Kitty Parham storms through her own blues-drenched I’ll Live For Jesus, while Willie De John submerges herself in the beautiful Swing Low. Henrietta Waddy rocks out on What A Happy Time, and De John is back in the lead on an emotional Creation. Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind is swept along by a gospel breeze, while Poor Pilgram of Sorrow showcases Steadman at her best, and Kitty Parham’s God is Not Dead ends the album in a rousing affirmation. Henrietta Waddy introduces the album with, “We’re goin’ to have church for just a little while.” This album may just convert all those non-believers!

My Generation is the debut album by The Who and was released in 1965 to great acclaim. Hailed by critics as one of the best rock albums of all time, it included hit songs such as “My Generation” and “The Kids Are Alright”.

An explosive debut, and the hardest mod pop recorded by anyone. At the time of its release, it also had the most ferociously powerful guitars and drums yet captured on a rock record. Pete Townshend’s exhilarating chord crunches and guitar distortions threaten to leap off the grooves on “My Generation” and “Out in the Street”; Keith Moon attacks the drums with a lightning, ruthless finesse throughout. Some “Maximum R&B” influence lingered in the two James Brown covers, but much of Townshend’s original material fused Beatlesque hooks and power chords with anthemic mod lyrics, with “The Good’s Gone,” “Much Too Much,” “La La La Lies,” and especially “The Kids Are Alright” being highlights. “A Legal Matter” hinted at more ambitious lyrical concerns, and “The Ox” was instrumental mayhem that pushed the envelope of 1965 amplification with its guitar feedback and nonstop crashing drum rolls. While the execution was sometimes crude, and the songwriting not as sophisticated as it would shortly become, the Who never surpassed the pure energy level of this record.

This is an important album. Back then this album was far ahead of time. It recorded the awesomeness of our jazz fathers, the inspiring figures who helped to shape our jazz scene today. This recording also stands as a living historical evidence not only for Indonesian jazz journey, but also in global jazz scene. For more than 4 decades it was really difficult to find and very expensive, but now you can have it in remastered in 88.2 kHz at very, very considerate price.

Indonesia and jazz? Not so far-fetched! Improvisation is a part of traditional gamelan, and modal playing goes back 1000 years; jazz began seriously delving into modes with Miles Davis in the 1950’s. Clarinet icon Tony Scott proselytized jazz during his six-year sojourn in Asia, and in so doing brought Asian music masters, including players on this album, into the jazz world. Down Beat called pianist Bubi Chen “The Art Tatum of Asia”, and saxophonist Marjono, whose influences include John Coltrane, is an authority on traditional Balinese and Javanese music. Djanger Bali is a Balinese sitting dance with a gamelan- style melody and the pentatonic Bali-Javanese pelog scale for improvisation. Mahlke rollicks with a guitar-clarinet duo – this group can smoke on straight-ahead jazz changes. Javanese for xylophone and flute, Gambang Suling keeps to the feel of this piece from central Java. Marjono sings the lyrics on the Javanese children’s ghost song Ilir Ilir. There’s a taste of Caribbean, swing, and gamelan in the play. Burungkaka Tua is taken at ballad pace with beautiful solos by Bubi on piano and Marjono on flute. Sumertime is all about heated solos and the juxtaposition of the pelog and Dorian scales. A classy early exploration of world music combining the best of both worlds.

Tracklist:
01 – Djanger Bali
02 – Mahlke from “Katz und Maus”
03 – Gambang Suling
04 – Ilir, Ilir
05 – Burungkaka Tua
06 – Summertime

Known as “the Lion” of the Harlem piano style, Willi Smith was one of the fathers of stride, and a member in good standing of a coterie of certified jazz legends. Throughout the album Smith reminisces about the pianists who congregated in New York and proceeded to revolutionize jazz. His recollections about the music of “my good friends and my pals” as he plays their music are priceless glimpses into the Jazz Age of the ‘20s and ‘30s.

The first three pieces are by another one of the founders of Harlem stride, Luckey Roberts; next, Ubie Blake’s beautiful ballad Memories of You, as Smith humming parts of the melody, then Shine with Willi’s off-the-cuff comments and full-tilt ‘rag’ chorus. Smith displays his amazing stride technique on Oh You Devil, and hits the perfect lilting swing to Fats Waller’s hit Keeping Out of Mischief. The Lion plays a medley of three Duke Ellington pieces one after another, as Solitude segues into Sophisticated Lady. Willi’s singing on Some of these Days hints at what it must have been like at one of those whiskey-laced late-night Harlem rent parties. Willi peppers the classic 12th Street Rag with some Harlem stride, and ends with his Theme Song. There’s a cornucopia of jazz evergreens, the nostalgia of peering into the past, and the surprise that there are still discoveries to be made, from what is, after all, great music. The pieces function as an interconnected musical storybook; it is worthwhile to download the complete set.

Willie “The Lion” Smith was one of the last remaining giants from the stride piano era when he made this studio recording for Decca in 1965. Although seven of the 15 tracks are Smith’s compositions, they are not his better known works, adding to the value of this release. One can hear how a performance like the driving “In a Minor Groove” could have influenced Duke Ellington early in his career. There are also strong takes of oldies like “Ain’t She Sweet” and “Some of These Days,” along with an elaborate arrangement of George Gershwin’s “Summertime” that likely dazzled the composer if he had the opportunity to hear it during his many visits to Harlem. Smith delves into the works of his comrades in stride, including James P. Johnson’s demanding and unjustly obscure “Steeplechase” and protégé Fats Waller’s well-known “Honeysuckle Rose.

This 1969 release has more in common with the Beatles and 1960s psychedelic pop-rock than the jazz music of that era. The Oimels from the eclectic Wolfgang Dauner Quintet highlights three internationally acclaimed European musicians: keyboardist Dauner, a German jazz institution, his fellow Stuttgarter Eberhard Weber on bass and guitarist Sigi Schwab. With Schwab’s sitar and the band vocals, Take Off Your Clothes to Feel the Setting Sun shows its Beatles influence. Gershwin’s My Man’s Gone Now is reinterpreted in a Latin rock feel with lots of effects, while Come On In On In starts off with Weber’s electrified cello melding into an Indi-country rock rhythm guitar riff and a raga-like vocal line before ascending into chaos. The final track, appropriately a Beatles cover of A Day in the Life, is reworked into a minimalistic masterpiece.

The Oimels also highlights three internationally acclaimed eclectic European musicians: keyboardist Wolfgang Dauner is a German jazz institution; fellow Stuttgarter bassist Eberhard Weber is known for his band Colours with Charlie Mariano, and his work with Jan Garbarek, while guitarist Sigi Schwab’s career spans work with a host of headliners, film, theatre, and TV music, and his own projects. Oh Baby I Don’t Love You Anymore starts out with an old-fashioned honky-tonk blues before electric guitar distortions take the music to the edge. With Schwab’s sitar and the band vocals, Take Off Your Clothes To Feel The Setting Sun shows its Beatles influence. Gershwin’s My Man’s Gone Now is reinterpreted in a Latin-rock feel with lots of affects. Come On In On In starts off with Weber’s electrified cello melding into an Indi-country-rock rhythm guitar riff and a raga-like vocal line before ascending into chaos. Dig My Girl moves to the mysteries of India, with sitar and vocals ala George Harrison. Dauner takes an acidic electric organ solo and the guitar is ablaze with distortion. The Traditional English ballad Greensleeves is given the Latin treatment. Uwii has a funk groove with Dauner scatting along with his solo. Rolling Stone rated A Day In The Life as the Beatles’ greatest song. Dauner and Co. rework it into a minimalistic masterpiece. Dauner in the Sky with Diamonds.

Recorded on September 25-26, 2014 at Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway. Mixed and mastered at Dogmatic Sound, Burbank CA, by Rich Breen. Original music by Yelena Eckemoff with Yelena Eckemoff on piano, Tore Brunborg on tenor and soprano saxophones, Arild Andersen on double bass, and Jon Christensen on drums.

In a quick follow-up to her masterful album “Lions”, Russian-born and now North Carolina-based pianist Yelena Eckemoff offers up Everblue, the most “ECM Records-sounding” set not on that deservedly esteemed label. It is, rather, released on her own L&H Productions. The names of the sidemen on the date explain in part the ECM-like sound: saxophonist Tore Brunborg, bassist Arild Andersen, and drummer Jon Christensen, the Norwegian contingent, are all long time ECM Records artists, as leaders and hired guns for other players, and their long term contributions have been instrumental in shaping the ECM aesthetic of subtlety, intricacy, and fluid motion.

Refined beauty, coming from a place of deep commitment combined with the foundation of a serious musical education, mixed with spontaneous joy, a relentless searching for the divine and a childlike sense of wonder is what makes Yelena Eckemoff’s music so special, so edge-of-the-seat mesmerizing. With her Norwegian bandmates, the sum of the parts adds up to unfathomable whole. The music glows, as if enveloped in an aura. Everyone solos, nobody solos? Sometimes that means an auditory mess. But Eckemoff’s music has such of preconceived structure that the “thread” never unravels or tangles. On Everblue, the tunes sound like written-out pieces with a judicious flexibility built in for the individual players. Some of ECM Records to which Everblue can be compared (the sets falling into the Euro-folkloric aesthetic) can sound placid, in a very good sense of the word. With Everblue the sound here always has an “edge,” a dynamic four-way input of the individual parts that never allows the listener’s attention to wane: Brunborg’s organically sacred sax work on tenor and soprano, Andersen’s sharp, singing bass lines, Christansen’s rustling drum work, the ringing cymbal accents, Eckemoff’s virtuosic, crystalline touch and prayerful, gorgeous immediacy. There are ten tunes here, eight by Eckmoff and two by Andersen. The Ecklemoff-penned tunes explore the conept of beaches and oceans, while Andersen’s are more abstract, freer. Eckemoff painted the cover art, and wrote poems (included in the cover booklet) for each of her songs. She has, after a career as in classical and sacred music, evolved—in five short years and eight jazz albums—into a major jazz artist

The year 2015 has been a productive one for Yelena Eckemoff, with two extraordinary recordings—Lions and Everblue, both sets worthy of end-of-the-year, top ten list consideration.

For Yelena Eckemoff, finding the nexus where training and an early successful career in the classical sphere meet with the Moscow-born, North Carolina-resident pianist/composer’s more recent predilection for jazz and improvised music has been a wholly natural pursuit. A meeting place where the whole is invariably greater than the sum of its parts, with Lions – her eighth jazz album in nine years – Eckemoff once again raises the bar on a very personal approach to bringing detailed composition and freewheeling extemporization together with the idea of music as real narrative.

It’s hard not to be swept away by Eckemoff’s vision of African vistas and wildlife from a lioness’ viewpoint. Eckemoff’s music finds compelling middle ground between through composition and the loose interpretative interaction that any trio bolstered by Andersen and Hart is bound to possess. The three musicians traverse considerable territory, from ethereal atmospherics both sun-charred and moonlit indigo and more grounded explorations of groove, to cinematic expanses that evoke imagery reflective of Eckemoff’s experience – the soundtrack to the most personal of imaginary films. And whether it’s Eckemoff’s impeccable virtuosity and penchant for the impressionistic, Andersen’s lithe muscularity and irresistibly singing tone, or Hart’s ability to suggest time with the broadest use of color and texture, Lions is an album that continues to surprise long after it’s been spun for the first time.

Arguably the greatest violinist in modern jazz, Zbignew Seifert was a musician’s musician, a player who is still talked about with a sense of awe. By the time of his death in 1979 at the age of 32, he had an international following and was playing with the jazz world’s elite. This 1976 recording features some of the genre’s premiere musicians, including American drummer Billy Hart, considered in the same ranks as such innovators as Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. Bassist Cecil McBee’s credentials include work with Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett. Both Hart and McBee had also played with pianist McCoy Tyner, to whom this album and the title song Man of the Light are dedicated.

Starting his brilliant career in late 1960’s, Stanko Quartet’s alumni Zbigniew Seifert, quickly became leading European Jazz voice and the first violist capable to transcend the spirit of Coltrane music. Among the few worldwide known jazz violinists Zbigniew Seifert stands out as a peculiar figure. Consider that this man allegedly stepped into jazz only by accident, that is “to impress the girls”, as he stated once. Seifert was born in Krakow in 1946 and enjoyed classical training, delving deep into the virtuoso repertoire from Bach to Tchaikovsky. It was still during his academic years that he met his new love. He passed the classical exams more or less as an obligation since he already had other things in mind, i.e. how to create an individual jazz vocabulary on his main instrument. Tragically, his promising American and world career abruptly ended with his death to leukemia in 1979.

”Man of The Light” includes six pieces which showcase Seifert’s playing in a beautiful way. You can clearly distinguish his classical background by listening to both of the duo tracks: In “Stillness”, teaming up with bass player Cecil McBee, he swings in tender overdubs, creating a sort of chamber music as he does to even greater effect in “Love In The Garden”, a reminiscence of his encounter with Jasper van’t Hof in Berlin in 1973. Zbigniew’s other side, that of his following Coltrane and McCoy Tyner, is very much present in “Turbulent Plover” and in the title track for which he praised especially Billy Hart’s work on drums. And certainly we don’t forget to mention the overwhelmingly dynamic opening track “City Of Spring”, in which his partner Joachim Kuehn takes the lead in a breathtaking solo towards the closing part. This piece being dedicated to his fresh Manhattan experiences shows that this guy from Poland was in full speed ahead at this time. What a pity Seifert died too early, in 1979. So this album can only be one of a few masterpieces by Zbiggy.
