“The More You Know” is mainly comprised of Ron Paley’s own compositions and arrangements. He is able to bring in Latin influences with his main jazz medium and showcase brilliant improvisational techniques on familiar melodies such as the Nutcracker and Pretty Woman.

Exuberant and exciting is the Big Round Records debut of big band pianist and composer Ron Paley. This is not “just another pops album.” Paley’s work is cool, clever, and ridiculously fun. Seven of the ten tracks on The More You Know are completely composed, arranged, and performed by Ron Paley. “Theme” is energetic, exploring elements of upbeat jazz and classic boogie woogie. Fast-paced, too, is “U of M” where the artist/composer delves into the genres of gospel and rock as well—surprising the listener at the end with his impressive talent for percussing vocally. “A Beautiful Soul,” and “P&Q” are exquisite jazz ballads that are par with the perfection of those Weill, Porter, or Gershwin. This is demonstrated, too, in Paley’s Ballad Trilogy. “Listen to the Sound,” explores the rhythmic character inherent in Latin dance genres. The title track, “The More You Know,” is fresh and improvisatory. Paley’s mash-up arrangement of Dietz and Schwartz’s “Alone Together” an Orbison’s “Pretty Woman,” is the most experimental track on the album and demonstrates Paley’s gift for transforming the expected into something altogether new. Paley’s arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz of the Flowers,” is a lounge treat, unlike any other interpretation of the favorited Nutcracker tune. Paley brings the same sort of originality to his fabulous arrangement of Chopin’s Prelude in C-Minor, which concludes this treasure of a recording.

Tracklist:
01 – Theme
02 – U Of M
03 – A Beautiful Soul
04 – P and Q

Steven Reinhardt is a French Gipsy guitar performer. Steven is the descendant of legendary guitar master Django Reinhardt’s cousin. He is a member of this broad family that carries around the world, generations after generations, a special way of playing music. Listening to Steven’s music is like hearing centuries of Manouche tradition: A way of life, a unique culture. He is actually performing in quartet. Steven Reinhardt’s second album, “Thaissy Bolero”, dedicated to his daughter Thaissy.

As he learned guitar with famous artists such as his grand-father Jim Ways or his Uncle Angelo Debarre, Steven grew as an artist with high standards! In every day life Steven never stops playing! If we consider he really started his career when he was 18, we can quote live shows on stage with artists like Tchavolo Schmidt, Adrien Moignard, Angelo Debarre (of course!), Serge Krief or Samy Daussat… He has always been considered as one of the young members of the extended family of musicians that nowadays carry the legacy of Django Reinhardt in France and all around the world. And he’s often invited on major events celebrating the memory of Django, such as the “Cent Ans de Django Reinhardt” in 2010 in Paris (France, La Cité de la Musique). In 2013 Steven Reinhardt and his former manager decided to record a few tracks to give birth to Steven’s first album: L’Esprit Manouche. At 28, Steven is now a husband, a father and a fully accomplished artist with his own musical universe. The tracks of his second album Thaissy Bolero sound as a mix of retro and modern. It’s like having a walk in the streets of Paris: Fresh and celebrating life in an out-of-time background universe…

Accompanied by a top-flight rhythm section, four exceptional German gypsy violinists trade solos on five standards and three originals. The album swings infectiously as the violinists present lively renditions of Satin Doll and Autumn Leaves, as well as a surprisingly up-tempo Bye Bye Blackbird. The four are following in the tradition of legendary gypsy guitarist Django Rheinhardt and his musical soulmate French violinist Stephane Grappelli, but there is a taste of something more modern. Leader of the pack Zipflo Rheinhardt is descended from Django, but admits to being influenced by Jean-Luc Ponty.

Here’s something special for jazz violin fans: accompanied by a top-flight rhythm section, four exceptional German gypsy violinists trade scintillating solos on five standards and three originals. The four follow in the tradition of the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Rheinhardt and his musical soulmate French violinist Stephane Grappelli, but here there is a taste of something more modern. Leader of the pack Zipflo Rheinhardt is descended from Django, but admits to being influenced by Jean-Luc Ponty. The album swings infectiously, with the violinists trading phrases on lively renditions of Satin Doll and Autumn Leaves, as well as a surprisingly up-tempo Bye Bye Blackbird. Gipso Nipso has a Latin feel to the theme before the band gets down to a swinging blues and some background vocalese. Zipflo’s Orpheus has an intro sounding of ancient Greece, then transforms into a minor blues with some hip rhythmic acrobatics for the solos. A treat times four for those who love jazz violin and swing.

As with their last round of Surround Sound Super Audio CDs, these three releases are Single Inventory Hybrid Surround Sound SACDs where the SACD serves as both the CD and SACD edition of the album.

If you’re into vocal recordings, or want a sampler of Chesky’s material, or if you just want something that sounds great so that you can impress friends with your stereo, get this disc. I play it a lot – for all of the above reasons. I listen to many tracks on this disc, but I’m always drawn back to Livingston Taylor singing Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely.” Through the OMD-28s, the richness and vibrancy of Taylor’s voice were startlingly realistic, with no chestiness or overhang. Furthermore, his voice was tight and focused”. – Doug Schneider Soundstage

„Pavane pour une infante défunte“, an early work, takes us into the world of dance that perfumes the musical world of Ravel. „Gaspard de la nuit“ in the French Romantic tradition, is a triptych inspired by three of Aloysius Bertrand’s prose-ballads: Ondine, the water nymph; Le Gibet (Gallows), paints a gruesome picture of „a bell tolling from the walls of a city, beneath the skyline, and the body of a hanged man, reddened by the setting sun“; Scarbo, depicts the night-time mischief of a mocking dwarf. We return to the dance with the bold‚ “Valses nobles et sentimentales“, a series of waltzes written in 1911. Finally, „Ma Mère l’Oye“ (Mother Goose), shows Ravel’s affection for his childhood days. Vanessa Wagner brings out the modernity of these scores, their sudden movements of violence, their moments of ineffable sweetness. She plays with rigour, intensity and a velvet touch.

Vanessa Wagner’s inclusion of the solo version of Ma Mère l’Oye is a nice touch which sets this Ravel recital apart from the myriad other versions. She plays a Yamaha, which perhaps lends itself less well than a Steinway to Ravel’s colourscape, though it is an aid to clarity, not least in the fast repeated notes that bedevil ‘Scarbo’. This is a notably broad reading of Gaspard, the central movement particularly drawn out (two and a half minutes longer than Argerich’s live 1978 Concertgebouw reading). Bavouzet, Tharaud and Osborne gain in atmosphere by being just that bit tauter than Wagner; she does, though, find a good degree of caprice in ‘Scarbo’, although others are more malevolent. There are good things in the faster numbers of Valses nobles and she manages to convey the vigour of the opening without becoming percussive. But turn to Volodos in his live Vienna recital and the work is lifted to another level, particularly in the more ethereal numbers. On the whole, Wagner is most convincing in the faster music; in slower numbers her rubato is arguably over-generous. ‘Le jardin féerique’ is one instance, the opening of the suite another (I’m no purist: I have a weakness for the naughty but nice arrangement of this suite for two pianos and percussion). That’s something that particularly afflicts the Pavane pour une infante défunte, a piece that Osborne and Bavouzet in their different ways realise much more effectively.

The Cars’ 1978 self-titled debut, issued on the Elektra label, is a genuine rock masterpiece. The band jokingly referred to the album as their “true greatest-hits album,” but it’s no exaggeration – all nine tracks are new wave/rock classics, still in rotation on rock radio. Whereas most bands of the late ’70s embraced either punk/new wave or hard rock, The Cars were one of the first bands to do the unthinkable – merge the two styles together. Add to it bandleader/songwriter Ric Ocasek’s supreme pop sensibilities, and you had an album that appealed to new wavers, rockers, and Top 40 fans. One of the most popular new wave songs ever, “Just What I Needed,” is an obvious highlight, as are such familiar hits as “Good Times Roll,” “My Best Friend’s Girl,” and “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight.” But like most consummate rock albums, the lesser-known compositions are just as exhilarating: “Don’t Cha Stop,” “Bye Bye Love,” “All Mixed Up,” and “Moving in Stereo,” the latter featured as an instrumental during a steamy scene in the popular movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High. With flawless performances, songwriting, and production (courtesy of Queen alumni Roy Thomas Baker), The Cars’ debut remains one of rock’s all-time classics.

Tracklist:
01 – Good Times Roll
02 – My Best Friend’s Girl
03 – Just What I Needed
04 – I’m In Touch With Your World
05 – Don’t Cha Stop
06 – You’re All I’ve Got Tonight
07 – Bye Bye Love
08 – Moving In Stereo
09 – All Mixed Up

Since the Cars had created a perfect album with their 1978 self-titled debut, it would be nearly impossible to top it. Instead of laboring long and hard over a follow-up like many ’70s bands did after a huge commercial success, the band cranked out their sophomore effort, Candy-O, almost exactly one year later from the first LP. And while the album was not as stellar as its predecessor was, it did contain several classics, resulting in another smash album that solidified the band’s standing as one of the most promising new bands of the late ’70s. The first single, the Top 20 anthem “Let’s Go,” proves to be the best track, but plenty of other standouts can be found as well. The title track remains one of the band’s best rockers, while the gentle “It’s All I Can Do” also deserved to be a hit. The band pays tribute to T. Rex on “Dangerous Type” (the main guitar riff resembles “Bang a Gong”), rocks out on “Got a Lot on My Head” and “Night Spots,” shows their softer side on “Since I Held You,” and embraces modern pop on “Double Life” and “Lust for Kicks.” Their second strong release in a row, Candy-O proved that the Cars were not one-hit wonders, like so many other bands from the same era.

Tracklist:
01 – Let’s Go
02 – Since I Held You
03 – It’s All I Can Do
04 – Double Life
05 – Shoo Be Doo
06 – Candy-O
07 – Night Spots

The Cars – Panorama (1980/2016) [Remastered]

For their third album, 1980’s Panorama, the Cars decided to challenge their fans with an album unlike its predecessors. Whereas The Cars and Candy-O were both comprised of instantly catchy and distinctly tuneful songs, Panorama was much darker and not as obvious – an attempt at breaking away from the expected winning formula. Still, the album was embraced by their fans and hit number five on the charts, although it was the only Cars release not to spawn a true hit single (the closest thing to a hit was “Touch and Go,” which peaked at number 37). Standouts included the swirling title track that opens the album, as well as the aforementioned “Touch and Go,” which merges off-time keyboard flourishes with some great textural guitar work by Elliot Easton. “Gimme Some Slack” proved to be a fierce rocker, as did the underrated album closer, “Up and Down,” while their softer side was represented by “You Wear Those Eyes.” Many would consider such tracks as “Down Boys,” “Misfit Kid,” and “Getting Through” throwaways, but others are strong, just not as well known as some of the other material (“Don’t Tell Me No,” “Running to You”). It may not be as instantly rewarding as other Cars albums, but Panorama improves with each listen.

Tracklist:
01 – Panorama
02 – Touch and Go
03 – Gimme Some Slack
04 – Don’t Tell Me No
05 – Getting Through
06 – Misfit Kid
07 – Down Boys
08 – You Wear Those Eyes

By augmenting their sound with more synthesizers, electronics, and drum machines, the Cars’ fourth release, Shake It Up, helped bridge their hard rock-based early work (1978’s The Cars) with the futuristic-pop direction of 1984’s Heartbeat City. The band’s sound may have been evolving with each succeeding album, but Ric Ocasek was still writing compelling new wave compositions despite all the change, many of which would ultimately become rock & roll standards. The up-tempo title track remains a party favorite to this day (reaching number four on the singles charts), while the melancholic “Since You’re Gone” remains one of Ocasek’s best-ever tales of heartbreak. Intriguing videos were made for both songs, officially introducing the band to the MTV age. Like its predecessor, 1980’s Panorama, filler is present (“This Could Be Love,” “Maybe Baby”), but many lesser-known album tracks prove to be highlights: the almost entirely synth-oriented tracks “Think It Over” and “A Dream Away,” the rocking “Cruiser,” plus the more pop-oriented “I’m Not the One” and “Victim of Love.” Although Shake It Up was another resounding commercial success, their next album would be the one that made the Cars one of rock’s quintessential acts of the ’80s.

Tracklist:
01 – Since You’re Gone
02 – Shake It Up
03 – I’m Not The One
04 – Victim Of Love
05 – Cruiser

MTV had become a major marketing tool by 1984, and the Cars were one of the first bands to use the new video medium to their advantage. The band’s fifth album, Heartbeat City (Elektra), spawned several imaginative and memorable videos, which translated into massive chart and commercial success, making it one of the biggest releases of the year. Produced by hitmaker John “Mutt” Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard), the album included two Top Ten singles – the ballad “Drive” and the charismatic “You Might Think” – plus an additional two that landed in the Top 20: the summer anthem “Magic” and the eccentric “Hello Again.” But it didn’t just stop there, plenty of other tracks could have been hits as well, such as the sparse rocker “It’s Not the Night” and the breezy pop of “Looking for Love.” Other highlights included the ethereal title track, the melodic rocker “Stranger Eyes,” and the moderately paced love song “Why Can’t I Have You.” Although the Cars experienced their greatest success yet with Heartbeat City, it would unfortunately not last for long – after just one more studio album (1987’s spotty Door to Door), the band split up.

Tracklist:
01 – Hello Again
02 – Looking For Love

Even Ric Ocasek’s own production couldn’t save Door to Door from being a rather lackluster album, failing to capture the type of magic that the Cars instilled on past releases. Their last Top 40 single, “You Are the Girl,” peaked at number 17 in September of 1987, while efforts like “Strap Me In” and the album’s most melodious tune, “Coming Up You,” failed to crack the number 50 mark. Missing from the album is the usual Cars chemistry, made up of Ocasek’s crisp vocals and Elliot Easton’s animated, hook-infused guitar work. Instead, tracks like “Go Away” and “Double Trouble” yield to murky instrumentation and subpar rock formulas. Even with some companionable keyboard playing from Greg Hawkes, which rises above any of the album’s guitar contributions, the music on Door to Door neglects the savvy pop jump that normally comes from the Cars’ music. With humdrum rhythms and cloudy melodies replacing any hint of pop depth, the album itself peaked at number 26 in the U.S. and a dismal number 72 in the U.K. The reason for Ocasek’s lack of vigor and loss of desire became apparent in February of the next year when the breakup of the Cars was publicly announced.

Quarter-tonal music – in which every semi-tone is cut again in two, so that, for example, between C and C flat there is a C semi-flat, and so on, in a range that has 24 notes instead of the usual 12 – has existed, in western cultures at least, from the start of the 20th Century. Charles Ives, the great forerunner, would use it in 1924, Wyschnegradsky in 1920, both of them followed by dozens of other composers running up to the present day. But even so, its use remains rather marginal. Yes, we find quarter-tones used in many pieces by Bartók or Enescu or Szymanowski as they try to capture rural accents; and of course the traditional music of all the rest of the world has used them for centuries. The difficulty for standard western instruments is that they aren’t necessarily technically equipped to play quarter tones: and piano pieces have to be played on two pianos, each tuned a quarter tone off the other – which creates many logistical difficulties. String instruments, of course, can do what they like (as one can see on the album’s closing piece, Meditation on two themes from La Journée de l’Existence for cello and piano, where the cello speaks in quarter-tones and the piano sticks wisely with semi-tones), and wind instruments can too, up to a point; but that requires very specific training for the musicians, which doesn’t necessarily pay off, as the repertoire that the training opens up is very limited. And that long-winded explanation should give the reader an idea of what to expect with this album of works, all written to make use of quarter-tones, by Alain Bancquart, Ivan Wyschnegradsky and Alain Moene. The main work here is surely, Thus Spake Zarathustra by Wyschnegradsky, an ample fresco written between 1930 and 1936. It’s written in the language of its times, for sure, but with these unsettling, ghostly quarter-tones that make the work fascinating: it’s absolutely one to discover post haste!

In making his first recording of a Mahler symphony, Daniel Raiskin has taken a big risk by choosing the Symphony No. 3 in D minor, the longest of the symphonies (indeed, the longest regularly performed symphony in the repertoire), and one of the toughest to hold together. Conducting the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie with a clear sense of the work’s massive length and variable moods, Raiskin doesn’t rush his musicians but takes a measured pace from the start and lets the symphony unfold one glorious section at a time. This requires considerable patience in the first movement, which runs close to 35 minutes, but the steady tempos and predominantly upbeat martial air give this opening section the right combination of cohesion and forward momentum to maintain interest. After this titanic movement, the rest of the symphony goes by with comparative ease, and Raiskin’s unhurried approach conditions listeners to accept the music on its own terms (in a sense, asking them to dally and smell the roses), so as the symphony’s deepening moods take over, feelings of reverence for nature and joy in small things become quite credible and not just the stuff of Mahler’s fantasies. Joined by alto Ewa Marciniec in the third movement, “O Mensch! Gib acht!”, and the women and boys of St. Martin’s Cathedral of Mainz in the jubilant fourth movement, Raiskin and the orchestra achieve a kind of serenity that makes the beatific Finale all the more compelling and moving. While this is not the most riveting performance of the Third on CD — and this may be because it was “based on a live recording,” suggesting careful editing with studio material — it has advantages in Raiskin’s close attention to details and his almost otherworldly sense of timelessness that makes it seem transcendent. Highly recommended.

While the alto as a soloist instrument made a timid first appearance at the end of the 18th century with Mozart, Stamitz and Dittersdorf, the Romantic era left it behind for the most part, despite Berlioz’ phenomenal Harold en Italie with alto solo; it was only during the last third of the 19th century that a few composers renewed their interest in this instrument as a soloist. Brahms of course, but also less-renowned musicians like those played here by violist Daniel Weissmann and pianist Jean-Louis Delahaut: Carl Reinecke, Henri Vieuxtemps, Robert Fuchs, and even Liszt in a most unique work for alto and piano, a Romance oubliée that closes the album like a melancholic goodbye. You’ll probably be surprised by this Liszt style, as here the composer rolls out an ample melody with most discrete accompaniments. At the end of the track, it’s worth listening to the alto arpeggios that Berlioz included in his Harold, undoubtedly the last tribute of old Liszt to his friend who had passed away twelve years earlier. More virtuosic, the works of Reinecke, Vieuxtemps and Fuchs demonstrate the growing role of the alto in the soloist repertoire, a trend that would eventually be brought in the open at the start of the 20th century with the works of Bartók, Hindemith, Walton, Milhaud, Martinů, Zimmermann, Berio, Ligeti, Kurtág… and the list is still growing to this day. However it is unfortunate that Romanticism didn’t consider the richness of this instrument, too often turning its attention to solo piano…

For his second Warner Classics album, David Aaron Carpenter – “a star violist” in the words of the Los Angeles Times – brings together concertos by Dvořák, Bartók, Walton and a dance cycle by contemporary composer Alexey Shor. Carpenter identifies a connecting theme of “a longing for the homeland … a reverence for native musical folk tunes and language.” He is accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under three distinguished conductors: Kazushi Ono, Vladimir Jurowski and David Parry.

The Motherland evoked in the title is that of the four composers presented here, even though most of their exiles were voluntary. Dvořák moved to New York for a few years, tempted by the possibilities offered by the post of Director of the New York Conservatory, while Walton chose to live on the island of Ischia, near Naples, for reasons of personal enjoyment, sun, and freedom. As for the Ukrainian Alexey Shor, he lives in New York, of his own volition. Only Bartók, in fact, wound up in New York as an exile fleeing the Second World War; and his Viola Concerto, commissioned by William Primrose, was incomplete at the time of the composer’s death. The rough drafts and sketches were brought together into this concerto, which remains a “work in progress”, as the first reconstitution (or rather, constitution) by Tibor Serly in 1949 was followed by many revisions, including by Bartók’s own son, 50 years later! This recording is of the first version, by Serly. For Dvořák, viola player David Aaron Carpenter offers his own reading of the Cello Concerto. And finally, the pieces by Shor fit into a tonal, neo-romantic, melodic tradition, resolutely ignoring anything that happened after 1900, a choice which is respected these days, but a few decades ago would have seen this material pigeon-holed as “easy listening”.

Released in May 1976, Changesonebowie begins where Bowie the artist begins in the collective imagination: not with his 1964 debut single “Liza Jane,” but with his 1969 hit “Space Oddity.” Even in 1976, it was already a bona fide classic, but it was the odd man out when it originally appeared on the singer’s second (and second self-titled) album. David Bowie was a hippie, acoustic singer-songwriter album featuring song titles like “Memory of a Free Festival” and “Unwashed and Slightly Dazed.” Especially in the post-Ziggy Stardust “Starman” era, casual fans didn’t have much use for the flaxen-haired pseudo-Bob Dylan vibe of David Bowie. It was perceived as your standard “buy it for the hit” fare, so finally being able to pick up “Space Oddity” on a compilation was a treat. Today the inclusion of an unreleased track or two is mandatory for greatest hits packages, but that wasn’t always the case. For U.S. fans, Changesonebowie was their first chance to own “John, I’m Only Dancing” as anything other than an import. The track hadn’t appeared on an album previously, having only been released as a U.K. single back in ’72. (RCA refused to release the track upon its initial release due to its possibly homoerotic lyrics.) While the Beatles’ Hey Jude (which features tracks that hadn’t been compiled on studio albums), beat Changesone to the market by a good six years, this was still an unusual move for an artist of Bowie’s stature in 1976.

“David Bowie’s first official compilation album, released in the wake of Station to Station and sharing that album’s odd typography, Changesonebowie is a handy one-stop roundup of the last four years of hits, plus “Space Oddity” – an American smash in 1973, but unavailable on a U.K. single since its first appearance in 1969. It soared to the top of the British chart, dragging Changesone with it – the album eventually peaked at number two. The album’s main charm for confirmed fans was the inclusion of “John, I’m Only Dancing.” Never previously included on LP, the song was also making its American debut here, with the excitement soaring even higher when it was discovered that the “wrong” version had been included – the regular 1972 U.K. single version was omitted in inadvertent favor of a 1973 re-recording. The error was corrected for subsequent pressings of the album. An unadventurous-looking track listing should not deter the keen fan. As with so many pre-CD age Bowie compilations, it’s very easy to overlook Changesonebowie in favor of the more-bang-for-your-buck career-spanning collections that have since emerged. It remains, however, a charming time capsule, a reminder of the days when Bowie was as much a chart-topping pop star as an iconic idol.” (Dave Thompson, AMG)

Changestwobowie is a David Bowie compilation album issued in 1981 by RCA Records. Its title and packaging followed the format of RCA’s earlier Bowie compilation, Changesonebowie released in 1976. As well as post-1976 singles, the album collected songs from earlier in Bowie’s career that had not appeared on Changesone. However it did not repeat the chart success of the earlier compilation, reaching No. 24 on the UK Album Chart and No. 68 in the United States. The album was briefly available on CD from 1985 but was soon deleted, along with most of his other RCA albums, owing to a conflict between Bowie and the label. The album was not reissued when Rykodisc obtained the rights to re-release the Bowie catalog in 1990, opting to merge the two compilations into one instead.

This year marks the 45th Anniversary of David Bowie’s sixth studio album, Aladdin Sane. To celebrate the occasion, Parlophone has announced a single run, limited edition silver vinyl reissue. It will arrive 45 years to the day of its newly discovered official release date of April 20th. The LP will only be available for purchase in brick and mortar retail stores. In addition, Parlophone has revealed a remastered version of Bowie’s best of compilation, Changestwobowie, arriving on April 13th. Drawing on material spanning from 1971’s Hunky Dory through 1980’s Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps), the reissue will be sold on high-resolution 192/24 and 96/24 digital CD, as well as standard digital for streaming and download. In addition, there will be a randomly available 180-gram vinyl edition on its initial limited run of black and blue vinyl before reverting solely to black vinyl.

She has taken part in many productions of Baroque music and recordings of operas (notably by Vivaldi), but this is her first recital. It is a programme of sacred music, motets, cantatas and excerpts from oratorios, which in the course of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were influenced by the increasingly fashionable genre of opera. From the famous ‘Agitata infido flatu’ from Vivaldi’s oratorio Juditha triumphans, here counterpointed by an aria from another setting of the story of Judith composed by Jommelli, to Stradella’s Lamentations and Porpora’s magnificent motet ‘In procella sine stella’, Delphine Galou covers a wide range of spiritual emotions. She is accompanied by the excellent Accademia Bizantina under its director and harpsichordist Ottavio Dantone. A concerto by Gregori and a sinfonia by Caldara complete this release, which includes several world premiere recordings.

‘I feel like I’m in a totally new band right now,’ says Dr. Dog guitarist/singer Scott McMicken. It’s a bold declaration considering he’s been co-fronting the beloved indie outfit for a decade-and-a-half, but it cuts straight to the heart of the intense and transformative experience behind the group’s brilliant new album, ‘Critical Equation.’ Produced by Gus Seyffert (Bedouine, Michael Kiwanuka), ‘Critical Equation’ is the most infections and adventurous collection Dr. Dog has laid to tape yet. The record was born from a journey of doubt and discovery, a heavy, sometimes painful reckoning that ultimately brought the band closer together with more strength and clarity than ever before. Call it an existential awakening, call it a dark night of the soul, whatever it was, it fueled one of the most fertile creative periods in the group’s history.

After a first disc in 2007 dedicated to existing works and transcriptions, we decided to work in direct collaboration with composers. The path we have chosen is designed to open up the repertoire and the horizons of our duo. This disc is an account of a part of these compositions, and of as many encounters. It also shows the pertinence of the partnership between the violin and marimba.

Around the immense landmark which is Franck’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, the Duo Gazzana has chosen to present less well-known works – so little-known in fact, that Ligeti’s Duo here is a discographic world first! The album opens with Ravel’s “posthumous” sonata, written in 1897, but only published forty years after his death. A contemporary piece to the Pavane for a Dead Princess, it possesses a grace reminiscent of Debussy, or Fauré. There is no virtuosity here, but rather an intimacy that seems to provide a bridge between the younger Ravel and the Ravel of later maturity. After Franck’s Sonata, which needs no introduction – but which is very much worth a listen in the hands of the gifted Natascia and Raffaella, disciples of Bruno Canino, Ruggiero Ricci, Yehudi Menuhin and Pierre Amoyal – there is a rare pearl from Ligeti, the Duoof 1946 in which Bartók’s influence remains in the foreground, with its Magyar and Romany elements. The album closes with another youthful work, Messiaen’s Theme and Variations, written in 1932 as a wedding gift to his first wife. The final, contemplative variation seems to open up its voice in the final notes of Quartet for the End of Time. In it, we hear the harmonies and the ranges that the composer loved, but his little birds haven’t hatched yet.
