Laura Veirs – The Lookout (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 38:31 minutes | 414 MB | Genre:  Folk, Singer-Songwriter
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Bella Union

A prolific songwriter for nearly twenty years, Laura Veirs proves the depth of her musical skill on her tenth solo album, The Lookout. Here is a batch of inimitable, churning, exquisite folk-pop songs; a concept album about the fragility of precious things. Produced by Grammy-nominated Tucker Martine, Veirs’ longtime collaborator, The Lookout is a soundtrack for turbulent times, full of allusions to protectors: the camper stoking a watch fire, a mother tending her children, a sailor in a crows nest and a lightning rod channelling energy.

Discreet but perfect, since the late 1990s Laura Veirs has been regularly putting out ethereal folk albums with a faint tinge of pop, rock and Americana… Sometimes, her granite writing reaches real peaks, like on her great 2004 work Carbon Glacier. Like Jolie Holland, Veirs is from the race of literary songwriters, granddaughters of Joni Mitchell who refused to cut ties with their teacher.

After a fine parenthetical sortie with her sisters KD Lang and Neko Case, Laura Veirs has returned to solitary work with the touching The Lookout. Solitary, but not really alone, because, as ever, she has put the thing together in close collaboration with her husband, Tucker Martine. Once again, the excellent producer and multi-instrumentalist has produced a dreamy backdrop (Seven Falls represents a triumph of good taste) to complement her rather sombre, dreamlike songs, performed with colleagues Karl Blau, Steve Moore, Eli Moore, Eyvind Kang and Martine himself, but also special guests Sufjan Stevens and Jim James.

Veirs speaks on The Lookout saying it “is about the need to pay attention to the fleeting beauty of life and to not be complacent; it’s about the importance of looking out for each other. I’m addressing what’s happening around me with the chaos of post-election America, the racial divides in our country, and a personal reckoning with the realities of midlife. I have friends who’ve died; I struggle with how to balance life as an artist with parenting young children.” And so we get a taste of little vignettes, which are always very much in touch with what’s fundamental, and evoke the fragility of the precious things in life. Her voice, vaulting and enchanting makes the music even more entrancing. –  Marc Zisman

Grammy award-winning American Roots band Old Crow Medicine Show return with their latest studio album, Volunteer. The album was recorded at the historic RCA Studio A and produced by Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson). Since the release of their last Grammy-winning studio effort Remedy, Old Crow Medicine Show has taken their versatility to another level, by not only reinterpreting Bob Dylan’s seminal album Blonde On Blonde, but also collaborating with pop sensation Kesha. Volunteer is yet another fine example of how Old Crow Medicine Show remains one of the most vibrant and forward thinking traditional bands of their time. The songs on Volunteer illustrate themes that resonate far beyond Old Crow Medicine Show’s diverse fan base, while also showcasing the depth in the group’s songwriting. The band’s recent accomplishments demonstrate that they still have the hunger to evolve and thrive in a variety of musical settings. While trends in music have come and gone, Old Crow Medicine Show has maintained their sense of integrity, continuing to share their infectious hybrid of traditional mountain music wherever they go.

The band features the extraordinary new singer Kent Hilli together with Rolf Nordstrom on guitar, P-O Sedin on bass, Fredrik Forsberg on drums and Leif Ehlin on keyboards. The Sir Douglas Quintet may have began life as an admirably nervy attempt by Doug Sahm and producer Huey P. Meaux to crash the Top 40 with a band of Texas rock & rollers during the height of the British Invasion, but Sahm’s wide-ranging musical tastes would move in a single direction for only so long. With time, the enthusiastic Tex-Mex garage rock of the early Sir Doug sides took on strong blues, country, and norteño influences as their career wore on into the mid-’70s, when Sahm retired the band’s moniker. In 1981, with dozens of new wave bands copping the Farfisa organ sound that anchored the Sir Doug hits of the ’60s (and Joe “King” Carrasco making a career out of playing a revved-up variation of Sahm’s old style), Sahm pulled the Sir Douglas Quintet out of mothballs, and while he approached the old garage stuff with admirable enthusiasm, he wasn’t about to set aside any of the other things he picked up along the way, as this set proves. Live from Austin, Texas was recorded during a taping of the PBS television series Austin City Limits, and while the crowd on hand obviously dug hearing Sir Douglas Quintet hits like “She’s About a Mover,” “Mendocino,” and “The Rains Came,” they seem just as jazzed by lesser-known sides like the bluesy “At the Crossroads” (in which Sahm sings his immortal line “You just can’t live in Texas if you don’t have a lot of soul”), accordion-fueled border music (“Ya No Llores/Chicano”), country two-steppers (“(Is Anybody Goin’ To) San Antone”), and anything else the band has up their sleeve. And it’s no wonder the crowd was eating this up – the quintet is in fine form here, with Sahm’s vocals and guitar work sounding spot-on; Augie Meyers nailing his classic, stuttering keyboard style, and also showing impressive chops on the squeeze box; Alvin Crow lending superb support on guitar and fiddle; and the rhythm section giving this music the loose-but-solid feel it needs. Sahm was a guy seemingly incapable of letting down his audience, and Live from Austin, Texas is a rip-roaring document of the man delivering the goods in one of his many guises; this is Lone Star party music at its best.

Continuing a trend started with their 2013 release, “No More Hell To Pay”, Stryper’s 10th studio album, “God Damn Evil” sees the band offering up their heaviest release yet! Opening track, “Take It To The Cross” features a guest appearance from Matt Bachand (Shadows Fall, Act Of Defiance) on death growls, yes, death growls, and immediately shows you that Michael Sweet and company have zero intentions of mellowing with age. The next two tracks, “Sorry” and “Lost”, are classic Stryper anthems, but with a modern heaviness and edge that carries the band’s sound into the 21st century and beyond. The title track, as with all previous Stryper releases, proves to be an instant classic and surely will be a setlist staple on the upcoming tour cycle.”You Don’t Even Know Me” and “The Valley” are excellent follow-ups to the glorious title track, with the latter being a true example of how heavy doesn’t have to equate to “fast”. Later, “Can’t Live Without Your Love” showcases that Sweet can still write ballad lyrics, but doesn’t need the saccharine music popularize in ’80s heavy metal to accompany it and can take it tasteful new directions. Fans of the previous two releases, “No More Hell To Pay” and “Fallen” and of the band’s classic early material will find much to love here as the band continues to push the envelope of their musical abilities.

The biggest selling UK country act of all time, The Shires, announce their highly anticipated third album ‘Accidentally on Purpose’, due for release on 20th April 2018 through Decca Records. The trailblazing duo will also be hitting the road this summer, performing their new music across the UK, including London’s Royal Albert Hall on 18th May. Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, The Shires’ new album combines massive country-pop choruses and emotive words about their whirlwind journey, relationships and their time in the States. Increasingly, US country music is taking music influence from the mainstream with pop-inspired hooks, a sound that The Shires’ new album reflects. “Accidentally on Purpose is full of personal songs that really sums up the whirlwind journey we’ve been on together. From the first day we met, we’ve been crazy dreamers with big plans, who really believed that Country could break into the UK mainstream. For all those dreams, we never imagined it would all happen so quickly and we’re so proud and excited to be releasing our third album.” – Ben and Crissie, The Shires

Since 2013 the Shires have been cooking up a popular style of country music with hints of pop. For their third album, Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes settled in Nashville. In the Mecca of the genre, the British duo impeccably recorded a series of personal songs recalling their dazzling rise to fame. Even more pop than its predecessor, Accidentally On Purpose is proof you can come from the Old Continent and excel at creating commercial and effective country music with unstoppable choruses. – Clotilde Maréchal

Walter “Wolfman” Washington’s 2018 album My Future Is My Past begins with the sound of ice clinking in a glass and the singer taking a swallow, quietly murmuring “That’s gonna work.” It’s a fitting opener for this set; if ever there was a blues equivalent to the albums Frank Sinatra cut of what he called “saloon songs,” this is it. My Future Is My Past is a bit different than what folks might expect from Washington; while he has a richly deserved reputation as a gifted guitarist and a soulful vocalist, this set is blues not for the joyous heart of Saturday night but for 3 a.m., after the juke joint is closed and you’re left with a last sip of bourbon and someone on your mind. My Future Is My Past is thoughtful and low-key, a set of songs about love both good and bad, and while Washington plays guitar on these sessions, the focus is on his vocals, with the instrumental accompaniment from a team of top New Orleans talent offering subtle, unobtrusive support. (Kudos to Ben Ellman of Galactic, whose production flatters the headliner while giving him enough room to work his magic.) Washington’s voice is a bit on the rough side here (doubtless due to the fact he was 74 when this album was released), but his phrasing is smart and silky-smooth, informed by jazz and classic soul as much as New Orleans blues, and he can evoke longing and heartache with the panache of a veteran actor. And bringing in the great Irma Thomas to duet with Washington on “Even Now” was truly inspired casting. My Future Is My Past is not an album that will get the party started, but if it’s a rainy night and you want to hear the sound of a man skillfully baring his soul, then this is just what you need.

“En anglais” is a studio album of the French popular singer Françoise Hardy. Original album released in United Kingdom in October 1968. The album features English covers of Rock, Folk, and Pop tunes on this rather heavily orchestrated album, which may be Hardy’s most original ’60s recording.

The renditions of Tim Hardin’s “Hang on to a Dream” and Phil Ochs’ “There But For Fortune” aren’t bad, but the torpid interpretations of “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “Let It Be Me,” “That’ll Be the Day,” and Elvis Presley’s “Loving You” really lay on the schmaltz. In both arrangement and material (there are no Hardy originals), there is little of what made the singer special here. Incidentally, one of the better tracks, the Europop-flavored “Empty Sunday,” was reworked in part from a tune recorded earlier on a solo single by Yardbirds singer Keith Relf (“Shapes in My Mind”).

Oozing beauty and cool since the mid ‘60s, Parisian singer, actress and all-round icon Francoise Hardy is somewhat of a cult figure in this country whilst being hugely popular in France. Entr’acte is her 19th album and was originally released in 1974. “Ma jeunesse fout le camp…” is a studio album by the French popular singer Françoise Hardy. Released in France in November 1967. The title is very idiomatic, but it in English its general meaning is “My youth is slipping away”. This album was the first produced by Hardy’s own production company, Asparagus Productions.

Hardy moved toward a more adult, sedate form of orchestrated pop balladry on this 1967 album. Nothing wrong with that per se; what makes it less exciting than her previous work, though, was that in general the material lacked the bounce and melodic strength of her best recordings. “Il N’y a Pas D’Amour Heureux” (“There is No Happy Love”) she sings in one of the tracks, and that sets the mournful tone for much of the tunes (half of which were written by herself), which often deal with sentimental themes of sad farewells. Still, it’s delivered with classy grace and ornate period production, and the uplifting “Voila” (easily the best cut here) is one of her top classics. John Paul Jones (presumably the future Led Zeppelin bassist) was one of the arrangers.

“Doremi Fasol Latido” is the third studio album by English space rock band Hawkwind. It was produced by Rockfield Studios and released in 1972. It reached No. 14 on the UK album charts. The original cover came in a silver foil sleeve with black print, the front depicting a shield which became an ident for the band, being used on many other album and single covers.

Doremi may not be Hawkwind’s most renowned album, but it carries the same type of prog rock spaciness as their first two releases. Even though the keyboard playing is trimmed down just a tad, the introduction of Ian Kilmister, otherwise known as Lemmy of Motörhead fame, makes up for it. With Lemmy’s hard-lined guitar playing and Del Dettmar’s synthesizer stabs, tracks like “Space Is Deep” and “The Watcher” are infused with elaborate instrumental meanderings in perfect Hawkwind fashion. The longer tracks, both “Brainstorm” and “Time We Left This World Today,” find Lemmy settling into the band’s extraordinary milieu, but it ended up being the album’s strongest cuts. There’s a harder feel to the songs all the way through, with the guitar and drums coming to the forefront ahead of DikMik’s “generators” and “hot electronics.” Doremi is the inaugural album for drummer Simon King, and with guitarist Dave Anderson and percussion man Terry Ollis now departed, Hawkwind still manages to muster up a firm intergalactic space-metal atmosphere, but with a more rugged thrust.

“Hall of the Mountain Grill” is the fourth studio album by space rock band Hawkwind, released in 1974. It is regarded by many critics as a career highlight (in studio). Retrospective reviews have been generally positive. Though they were critical of the title track, Allmusic called Hall of the Mountain Grill “The band’s best studio album” and “the quintessential guitar-oriented space rock record”.

The band’s best studio album, coming off of the success of Space Ritual. The group’s rock roots are juxtaposed effectively with the swelling synthesizer flourishes and pretentious song ideas, creating the quintessential guitar-oriented space rock record. The highlight was the live recording of “You’d Better Believe It,” with its crunchy guitars, but nobody minded keyboardman Simon House’s languid synthesizer-laden “Hall of the Mountain Grill” (especially as it was followed by the Lemmy-sung “Lost Johnny,” a great all-out rocker). The sound, especially the mix of ballsy high-volume guitar playing and soaring electronic keyboards (“The Psychedelic Warlords,” “D-Rider”), would later get co-opted by outfits such as Blue Öyster Cult (“(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”) and Kansas. Overall, this is the sound and imagery that the punkier kids and druggies who went to shows like Laserium were looking for, and if the producers of Laserium had devised something hooked around this record, it could have run 20 years or better.

“Hawkwind” is the self-titled debut album by Hawkwind, released in 1970, originally on Liberty Records, later reissued on Sunset Records. This album is historic since it is one of the first space rock LPs. The bulk of the album is composed of a freeform instrumental piece that the band named “Sunshine Special” but it was separated into different tracks on this album.

Produced by former Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, Hawkwind’s first album was rightfully compared to Pink Floyd’s early sound: an appealing conglomeration of hippie rock grooves and interplanetary guitar trips set to the phosphorescent wandering of Dik Mik’s electronics and Nik Turner’s cool sax playing. Hawkwind may not have been their most lucrative album, but it’s where it all began. Hawkwind’s initial galactic blues-rock sound is based on Dave Brock’s guitar playing, rising smoke-like through the haze of lyrical space funk. The two opening tracks set the tone, with “The Reason Is” sinking in nicely to the mood of both Dave Brock’s and John Harrison’s guitar viscosity. After this, the real Hawkwind begins to emerge, as the eight-minute “Be Yourself” is delightfully plastered with echoed vocals and comic book ominousness, putting drummer Terry Ollis in the spotlight this time. “Seeing It as You Really Are” moves hauntingly forward through the blackness of space as a constant jam, with the keyboards, saxophone, and guitar set adrift on a nonstop instrumental voyage. What begins to materialize throughout this debut album is the band’s trademarked sound as a whole, with each player making their instrument effectual and authoritative from the get-go. Hawkwind’s sound indeed solidified as their career moved upward through the ’70s, but their first album magnificently introduces the starting point of what was going to be a long and peculiar journey.

“In Search of Space” is the second studio album from Hawkwind, released in 1971. In April 2006 it made No. 83 in Classic Rock’s “The 100 Greatest British Rock Albums”, noting that “drummer Terry Ollis and bassist Dave Anderson could hit an awesome groove, allowing the rest of the band to cut loose on their acid-fuelled sonic adventures without fear of losing themselves or their listeners.” In the same issue, Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson placed it at No. 2 in his top 5, adding “it’s an extraordinary whirlpool of cosmic sound, the definitive space-rock statement. I love the album’s repetitive, almost pagan feel. It dispensed with the idea of soloists and has a real sense of ‘otherness’.”

In Search of Space strengthened Hawkwind’s science fiction-type brand of progressive rock, gaining bass player Dave Anderson and galactic poet extraordinaire Rob Calvert, while losing John Harrison at the same time. The album opens with the mind-numbing galactic haze of “You Shouldn’t Do That,” a spooky little 15-minute excursion that warps, throbs, and swirls with Dik Mik’s “audio generator” and the steady drum pace of Terry Ollis. Then comes the ominous whispering of the title, set to the pulsating waves of Dave Brock’s guitar and Turner’s alto sax, with Dettmar’s synth work laying the foundation. Wonderfully setting the tone, “You Shouldn’t Do That”‘s improvisational looseness and rhythmic fusion smoothly open up the album into the realm of Hawkwind. The peculiarity never ceases, as “You Know You’re Only Dreaming” and “We Took the Wrong Steps Years Ago” delves even deeper into obscurity, sometimes emanating with the familiar jangle of the guitar which then has its acquaintance overshadowed by the waft of the keyboard. Just as “Master of the Universe” chugs and rolls with a foreboding rhythm, “Adjust Me” retaliates with its moaning verse and tonal fluctuations fading into oblivion. The groundbreaking sound which Hawkwind achieved on In Search of Space helped to open up a whole new avenue of progressive rock. This album would lead to their most successful release in Space Ritual, coming two years after In Search of Space, with their interplanetary groove already set for takeoff. ~ Mike DeGagne

“The Space Ritual Alive in Liverpool and London” is a 1973 live double album recorded in 1972 by UK rock band Hawkwind. It is their fourth album, reached #9 in the UK album charts and briefly dented the Billboard Top 200, peaking at #179. The album was recorded during the tour to promote their Doremi Fasol Latido album, which comprises the bulk of this set. In addition, there are new tracks (“Born To Go”, “Upside Down” and “Orgone Accumulator”) and the songs are interspersed by electronic and spoken pieces making this one continuous performance. Their recent hit single “Silver Machine” was excluded from the set, and only “Master of the Universe” remains from their first two albums.

Recorded live in December 1972 and released the following year, Space Ritual is an excellent document of Hawkwind’s classic lineup, underscoring the group’s status as space rock pioneers. As the quintessential “people’s band,” Hawkwind carried ’60s countercultural idealism into the ’70s, gigging constantly, playing wherever there was an audience, and even playing for free on five consecutive days outside the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. The band’s multimedia performances were the perfect accompaniment for exploring inner space and imagining outer space. While not concerned with rock’s material trappings, Hawkwind were, ironically, among the hardest-working groups in Britain, averaging one show every three days during the year preceding these recordings. Given all that practice, it’s not surprising that the performances collected here are incredibly tight (although, reportedly, a couple of tracks were edited). Incorporating most of Doremi Fasol Latido, the show for the Space Ritual tour was conceived as a space rock opera, its blend of sci-fi electronics, mesmerizing psy-fi grooves, and heavy, earthbound jamming punctuated with spoken word interludes from astral poet Bob Calvert. Although his intergalactic musings date the album, coming across now as camp futurism, they still provide fitting atmospheric preambles to Hawkwind’s astounding, mind-warping sounds. Calvert’s manic recital of Michael Moorcock’s “Sonic Attack,” for instance, is an exercise in tension that subsequently explodes on the stomping “Time We Left This World Today”; with Nik Turner’s otherworldly sax, Dave Brock’s guitar distortion, and the earth-moving rhythm section of Simon King and Lemmy, this track offers a blueprint for the album’s most potent material. Another standout is “Orgone Accumulator,” ten minutes of hypnotic (Wilhelm) Reich & roll that could be the missing link between Booker T. and Stereolab. A 1973 advertisement described Space Ritual as “88 minutes of brain damage”; that characterization still holds true.

There can never be another album quite like “Space Ritual”. Captured live, for many, it’s Hawkwind’s very apex – the sound of your brain being fried. Originally edited into four glorious sides, it now spills across two extended discs with bonus tracks. From hereon in, Hawkwind were permanently cast as sonic overlords with wit and intelligence just as strong as the substances coursing through their veins. There was always something of the whiff of Campari about poet and sometime frontman Robert Calvert among the heavy sweating hairies, as if he was puffing a cigarette through a holder, observing, detailing. The doom metal of Time We Left This World Today slamming in after Calvert’s Richard III-isms on Sonic Attack still thrills. Space Ritual is as central to the 70s as The Dark Side of the Moon of the three-day week.

King Tuff is the neo-garage alter ego of Kyle Thomas (Happy Birthday, Feathers, Witch). “The Other”, his fourth full-length release, was self-produced and features contributions from Mikal Cronin, Jenny Lewis, Charles Moothart Kevin Morby, Greta Morgan, and Ty Segall. While not all-out riotous slacker-pop, he incorporates particles of honky-tonk rock, wry witticism in an admittedly more muted and seasoned, but still measured, present-day evolution of King Tuff.

In the lead-up to Kyle Thomas’ fourth King Tuff LP, the songwriter/multi-instrumentalist found himself at home in L.A., run down from years of touring, and feeling more and more distanced from the good-time rock & roller persona he’d created. Thomas decided to reset in a few ways: He made an effort to write songs that he could play solo with just a guitar, he self-produced the tracks for the first time since his debut, and he recorded the songs in a newly assembled home studio. He also played many of the instruments himself, with the exception of drums (Ty Segall, Charles Moothart) and saxophones (Mikal Cronin). The only other guests on the album were his all-star backing vocalists Jenny Lewis, Kevin Morby, Greta Morgan, and Segall. Calling it The Other, his first album since 2014’s Billboard 200-charting Black Moon Spell is still radiantly psychedelic and off the beaten path, but it’s also conspicuously his most introspective to date. He sets the stage with the title track, a six-minute prologue he said is about “hitting rock bottom” and rediscovering inspiration. It opens with what sounds like a small, hand-rung bell, followed by solemn organ and acoustic guitar that act as an ostinato under Thomas’ half-spoken narrative. The album then mushrooms, so to speak, into a lava lamp-inflected, saxophone-bolstered groove on “Raindrop Blue,” a colorful love song with lyrics like “You dazzled me with destiny and magnetized my mouth.” Expansive arrangements built on funky basslines, vintage keyboards, and vibrant textures pervade the rest of The Other, which continues in kind. It’s a more thoughtful, philosophical King Tuff, for certain, but The Other is far from a downer, with Thomas’ individuality and catchy pop sensibilities still intact.

02 – Raindrop Blue

When the awful news broke on Christmas Eve 2016 that legendary rocker and Status Quo member Rick Parfitt had passed, fans around the world were devastated that one of rock’s most iconic performers had been silenced. However, unknown to almost anyone, Rick had in fact virtually completed his first solo album whilst undergoing a period of recuperation after his heart attack in July. That album, poignantly titled “Over And Out” now have been released through earMUSIC.

‘Over And Out’ is but the latest element of the incredible legacy and body of work that Rick Parfitt leaves. A testament to his talent, his winning way with words, an incredible joie de vivre and a spirit that never flagged. He’ll be missed but ‘Over And Out’ is a great way to remember him. Gone but not forgotten.
Featuring 10 brand new songs, including the title track that broke hearts anew when it was played at Rick’s funeral, this is an album of depth and passion. Created by Rick Parfitt and Producer Jo Webb, the record is a true labour of love and showcases the softer side of Rick as a writer, artist and performer away from the Quo maelstrom as well as the purest rock and roll sound of earlier Status Quo records. Despite the fact Rick Parfitt had finished recording his guitar and vocal parts, a recording session was planned to happen in February 2017. Certain tracks were not totally finished when Rick died. The call to help ensure that his work could be completed, so that the world could hear it was answered by musicians of the calibre of Queen’s Brian May and Muse’s Chris Wolstenholme, both of whom were close to Rick. Rick’s son, Rick Parfitt Jnr, was also involved in the creative process, as were John “Rhino” Edwards and Alan Lancaster, amongst many others. All of those involved in completing the songs that Rick had written for ‘Over And Out’ have done him proud in bringing his vision to fruition.

Tracklist:
01 – Twinkletoes
02 – Lonesome Road
03 – Over and Out
04 – When I Was Fallin’ in Love
05 – Fight for Every Heartbeat
06 – Without You
07 – Long Distance Love
08 – Everybody Knows How to Fly
09 – Lock Myself Away
10 – Halloween

Musicians:
Rick Parfitt – guitar
Brian May – guitar
Chris Wolstenholme – bass
Rick Parfitt Jnr – vocals
