Double Vision is Foreigner’s seven-time Platinum masterpiece. The rock legends followed their sensational debut with this undeniable classic. It reached #3 on the Billboard 200 and features the band’s exhilarating Top Ten hits “Hot Blooded” and “Double Vision.” This classic-rock staple bursts with thrilling dynamics, stunning lyrics, luscious hooks and breathtaking choruses.

Foreigner promptly followed up its blockbuster debut with the equally successful Double Vision LP in 1978, which featured the FM mega-hits “Hot Blooded” and the driving title track. Opting not to mess with a good formula, the band wisely sticks to the polished hard rock sound that made its first record such a hit. Aside from the big singles, other highlights include the swaggering “Love Has Taken Its Toll” and the more restrained “Blue Morning, Blue Day.” As always, Lou Gramm’s impeccable rock vocals lead the way, supported by Mick Jones’ tasteful, arena-sized guitar riffs.

Foreigner’s 1977 debut remains one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the era. The record features the smash hits “Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold as Ice,” and “Long, Long Way from Home” and was certified 5X Platinum. Now, this multiplatinum rock masterpiece, available as a high-definition download!

Although punk rock’s furious revolution threatened to overthrow rock’s old guard in 1977, bands like Foreigner came along and proved that there was plenty of room in the marketplace for both the violent, upstart minimalism of punk and the airbrushed slickness of what would be called “arena rock.” Along with Boston, Journey, Heart, and others, Foreigner celebrated professionalism over raw emotion. And, looking back, it’s easy to see why they sold millions; not everyone in the world was pissed off, dissatisfied with the economy, or even necessarily looking for a change. In fact, for most suburban American teens, Foreigner’s immaculate rock sound was the perfect soundtrack for cruising through well-manicured neighborhoods in their Chevy Novas. The album spawned some of the biggest FM hits of 1977, including the anthemic “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold as Ice,” both of which were anchored — like most of Foreigner’s songs — by the muscular but traditional riffing of guitarist Mick Jones, the soaring vocals of Lou Gramm, and the state-of-the-art rock production values of the day, which allowed the band to sound hard but polished. As pure rock craftsmanship goes, Foreigner was as good as it got in the late ’70s.

Brahms is one of François-Frederic Guy’s favourite composer, he has accompanied him all his life, the first work that he performed in public was his First Concerto. The Brahms Project is, above all, conceived as an amorous dictionary of the composer and not an exhaustive complete recording. It is organised around the piano, the veritable common denominator of an original itinerary combining chamber music, the Lied, the concertos and solo piano works. It proposes to take the listener on a journey to the heart of German Romanticism. Far from being presented as distinct bodies covering his entire creative life like Beethoven, Brahms’s works with piano turn from sonatas into ballads, from variations into Klavierstücke, and include trios, quartets, quintet and concertos in keeping with his evolution, with form adapting to the novelty and richness of his intoxicating melodic inspiration. This seeming disparity is found in the works’ dimensions. The three great, formidable sonatas, along with the two piano concertos are imposing monuments, whereas the Klavierstücke of the last period are presented as confidences, not to say intimate confessions. This piano, in turn abrupt and lilting, melodic and symphonic, is of such boldness and originality that it led Robert Schumann, upon hearing the first sketches of Brahms’s sonatas, to hail ‘the new prophet of German music!’

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 21:51 minutes | 209 MB | Genre: Alternative

The first Grouper album in 4 years finds Liz Harris stripped of FX, pairing her vocals with skeletal piano gestures in beautifully pregnant space. For anyone familiar with the miasmic fuzz of Grouper’s previous releases, the relative clarity is quietly shocking in effect, revealing her songs and sound at their most vulnerable, and, in the process, locating a newfound strength in fragility.

Grid Of Points was recorded in Wyoming shortly after Liz finished recording Grouper’s Ruins out in Aljezur, Portugal, and on the most immediate level it seems to describe the difference in recording locations between windswept Atlantic coastline and sparse, landlocked insularity. The seven songs were written over a week and a half, with the process curtailed by a bout of what she describes as “high fever”. What remains forms some of Grouper’s most legible lyrics and intimate instrumentation, with each piece framed by stark, unprocessed space working in the same role usually occupied by her billowing sheets of harmonic distortion.

Untreated and unfiltered, Grouper’s voice rings plaintively clear, sometimes layered in ephemeral harmonies or curling off with jazz-soul wise inflections shadowed by modest piano phrasing in a crepuscular style that links back to all her previous work. Yet, in places the clarity is such that it almost feels like we the listeners have just been hearing her songs with clogged ears for the past decade and longer.

Ultimately, these results perhaps most acutely resonate with the etymology of Liz’s moniker – ‘Grouper’ as in member of a Fourth Way commune, The Group, which was inspired by the philosophy of George Gurdjieff, whose mystic meditations surely linger in the magick of Grid Of Points.

Ian Bostridge, ‘one of the world’s great lieder tenors’ The Telegraph, praised for his sensitive and distinctive performances, is joined once more by Julius Drake as they continue to explore the genius of Schubert’s songs. From the strikingly dramatic ballad ‘Der Zwerg’ to the melancholic tenderness of ‘An Den Mond’, the duo examine the emotions of every word and every note in this delicately curated programme, recorded live at Wigmore Hall, London, on 16 May 2015.

This fourth volume of the Lieder was recorded in concert on 16 May 2015 at the famous Wigmore Hall, a veritable temple of chamber music in London built by the German piano maker Bechstein. It takes us on a journey with the romantic Wanderer of the dramatic ballad Der Zwerg (The Dwarf) with the melancholy tenderness of An den Mond, the moon which is so inseparable from German romanticism, by turns baleful and benevolent. With time, Ian Bostridge’s voice has deepened almost to a baritone, but he still retains that heart-rending interpretation, a unique blend of sophistication, pure poetry, and revolt. On the piano, Julius Drake offers much more than just accompaniment: he is a wholly equal partner, in a close dialogue with the singer’s every gesture. He is also a music teacher at London’s Royal College of Music, festival director and with the many lyrical artists who normally partner with him, he arranges Lieder concerts for Wigmore Hall, the BBC and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. This new volume offers confirmation, were it needed, that Ian Bostridge is one of the greatest performers of Lieder active today. His performances are increasingly intense, and they constantly push at the limits of this repertoire, like the Erlkönig (The Erl-King) which flirts with the expressionism of a young Schönberg. An audacious performance, which eloquently underlines the continuity that runs through art, and in particular through music.  – François Hudry

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download  | Booklet, Front Cover | © Audax

For his first solo CD Jadran Duncumb combines Weiss’ astonishing and rarely-played late D-minor Sonata with two inventive and unheard Sonatas by Hasse, adapted by an unnamed lutenist and survivng now in a manuscript in Leipzig. The disc culminates in Weiss’ famous D-major Passacaglia; a piece that perfectly reflects the splendour of the Dresden court and its orchestra at the time.

It’s on a superb copy of a Renaissance (1590) Venetian lute by Marx Unverdorben (and revised in the baroque era around 1750 by Gabriel David Bachstetter) that Jadran Duncumb offers us a few gems written by Hasse and Weiss – Weiss is known for gravitating into Bach’s orbit, so much so that each reworked or arranged many of the other’s works. Between Hasse and Weiss, we are right at the end of the golden age of the lute, which was soon to disappear from view for centuries, only to resurface later in the hands of fans of a music that couldn’t really be played on any other instrument. Because writing for lute – most commonly in the form of tablature, which already limits the possibilities for crossover work with other instrumentalists, who almost never know how to read tablature – is specific to the instrument, and its fairly limited harmonic part-writing transfers rather poorly to the keyboard, for example. This being said, the two pieces by Hasse are in fact period transpositions from the clavier to the lute, with the loss of some harmonic elements compensated by the greater possibilities for phrasing and dynamics on a lute than on a harpsichord.

Chart History/Awards
– Reached #4 on the Billboard 200.
“Handy Man” reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Your Smiling Face” reached #6 on Billboard‘s Adult Contemporary charts.
“Handy Man” won the GRAMMY® for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

JT is a pinnacle recording in James Taylor’s legendary career. He is widely acknowledged as music’s definitive songwriter. The album is one of his bestselling works, having sold over three million copies in the United States alone. It features the hit singles “Handy Man” and “Your Smiling Face.” “Handy Man” would win the GRAMMY® for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. JT reached #4 on the Billboard 200. An absolutely essential recording.

On his last couple of Warner Bros albums, Gorilla and In the Pocket, James Taylor seemed to be converting himself from the shrinking violet, too-sensitive-to-live “rainy day man” of his early records into a mainstream, easy listening crooner with a sunny outlook. JT, his debut album for Columbia, was something of a defense of this conversion. Returning to the autobiographical, Taylor declared his love for Carly Simon (“There We Are”), but expressed some surprise at his domestic bliss. “Isn’t it amazing a man like me can feel this way?” he sang in the opening song, “Your Smiling Face” (a Top 40 hit). At the same time, domesticity could have its temporary depressions (“Another Grey Morning”). The key track was “Secret O’ Life,” which Taylor revealed as “enjoying the passage of time.” Working with his long-time backup band of Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, and Russell Kunkel, and with Peter Asher back in the producer’s chair, Taylor also enjoyed mixing his patented acoustic guitar-based folk sound with elements of rock, blues, and country. He even made the country charts briefly with “Bartender’s Blues,” a genre exercise complete with steel guitar and references to “honky tonk angels” that he would later re-record with George Jones. The album’s Top Ten hit was Taylor’s winning remake of Jimmy Jones’ “Handy Man,” which replaced the grit of the original with his characteristic warmth. JT was James Taylor’s best album since Mud Slide Slim & the Blue Horizon because it acknowledged the darkness of his earlier work while explaining the deliberate lightness of his current viewpoint, and because it was his most consistent collection in years. Fans responded: JT sold better than any Taylor album since Sweet Baby James. ~ William Ruhlmann

Recorded at TheBarn in Washington, MA.

Before This World, five-time Grammy Award winner James Taylor’s long-awaited new album, is his first collection of new material since 2002’s October Road. Taylor wrote and recorded much of Before This World while touring over the past several years.

Recorded primarily at TheBarn in Western Massachusetts, the 10-track album will feature James’s legendary band: Jimmy Johnson, Steve Gadd, Michael Landau, Larry Goldings, Luis Conte, Andrea Zonn, Arnold McCuller, David Lasley and Kate Markowitz, as well as special guests Yo-Yo Ma and Sting. Kim and Henry Taylor provide background vocals on several songs. This hi-res version of Before This World was mastered especially for audiophiles with less peak limiting for a much greater dynamic range than the CD version.

James Taylor never sets his guitar down — he spends a good portion of every year satisfying faithful audiences — but he did rest his pen, opting to sit out the 13 years following the release of 2002’s October Road. He kept busy with covers albums and Christmas records, but Before This World finds Taylor returning to writing, a habit he abandoned about a decade prior. Often, Before This World contains echoes of the first decade of the new millennium — there is a passing reference to 9/11 in a song about Afghanistan and a love letter to the Boston Red Sox’s 2004 World Series win — but Taylor wrote these all in a batch, then recorded them at home with his touring band. Such quick progress gives the record a cozy, unified feeling but, unlike some latter-day JT records, it’s not too comfortable. Taylor is randy enough to sing about some “first-class poontang” on the nicely grooving “Stretch of the Highway,” a song more notable for a mellow vamp worthy of Steely Dan, the first suggestion there’s a bit more variety here than on a typical Taylor platter. He’ll ease into his trademark laid-back pop, opening the proceedings with “Today Today Today” and brightening up the midsection with the happy “Watchin’ Over Me,” but as the record comes toward its conclusion, he takes detours into traditional English folk on “Before This World/Jolly Springtime” and “Wild Mountain Thyme,” while etching out a cinematic protest song in “Far Afghanistan.” When a record runs only ten tracks and 41 minutes, these departures amount to nearly half the record and turn Before This World into something unexpected: a record as relaxed as the average James Taylor album but one that’s also riskier and richer, the right album for him to make at this date.

2018 marks 50 years since progressive folk-rock band Jethro Tull jumped onto the British music scene. To kick off this exciting anniversary year, we present you with the 40th anniversary of “Heavy Horses”, a double album-set released by Parlophone Records. This edition will feature the original album, plus associated studio recordings.

Released between Songs From The Wood (1977) and Stormwatch (1979), Heavy Horses was the second of a trilogy of folk rock albums from Jethro Tull. Lead singer and flautist Ian Anderson explained its particular focus on horses and agricultural life saying, “As a child, my big passion was to get off the leash and explore the local wooded and leafy suburbs. So it didn’t suddenly become new in 1977, it was just that the subject matter fitted what I wanted to write about at the time.”

Upon release, Heavy Horses was a top 20 album on both sides of the Atlantic. Commercial success was met equally with critical praise for its melodies, instrumentation and Anderson’s signature flute playing. More recently, critics have described the album as “daring, experimental, literate, and often thrilling”, and a “testament to the men who made it”.

Continuing their research into the vast hinterland of German cantatas from the early baroque period, Johannes Pramsohler and the musicians of his excellent Diderot Ensemble here dive into the austere and strange music of Biber, but also the less-well-known works of Johann Christoph Bach, great uncle of Johann Sebastian and musicians like Pachelbel, Bruhns and Eberlin. Johannes Pramsohler brings a particular fire and mystical sensuality to this new album (heavenly and earthly delights never being so far apart), and intense celestial flights to his violin playing. A range of international singers have left behind opera and dived with staggering ease into a completely different repertoire. The architects of this success, the supply and airy voice of the Canadian mezzo Andrea Hill, the perfectly gloomy timbre of Spanish tenor Jorge Navarro Colorado and the dark colours of the Argentine bass Nahuel di Pierro, sound the depths of this music driven by a great piety.  –  François Hudry

„John Denver wasn’t merely hot during the mid-’70s; he was omnipresent on radio, TV, and on-stage for anyone who’d have him. Certainly, few artists enjoyed more than one greatest-hits collection – even if critics derided him as a granola-munching, tree-hugging folky who perennially smiled through life’s hardships. But the reality of Denver’s music is more complicated; behind the lush orchestration and gentle fingerpicking lies a more somber, contemplative side. In this respect, “Fly Away”‘s lament about city pressures could be considered his answer to the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.” “Like a Sad Song” and “I’m Sorry” apologize to forsaken lovers. “Looking for Space” takes a similar tack, although coupled with a yearning to explore the world outside yourself – a theme that likely struck a chord in many listeners. Of course, Denver’s ecological commitment is never far away in “Welcome to My Morning (Farewell Andromeda)” and “Calypso,” his salute to the late French undersea explorer Jacques Costeau. “Annie’s Song” goes further by explicitly linking nature and sensuality, while “Back Home Again” and “Grandma’s Feather Bed” celebrate the pleasures of home and hearth. Anyone who’s ever expressed themselves could relate to “This Old Guitar,” on which Denver casts a wistful yet unsparing look at how the instrument influenced his life. As a snapshot of Denver’s best-loved hits, this collection surely does the job.“ (Ralph Heibutzki, AMG)

Heir to a Latin musical tradition, Juanjo Mosalini decompartmentalises musical boundaries and makes his instrument, the bandoneon, sing alongside partners as different as Gotan Project or Ophélie Gaillard. With Delta y Mar, he returns to an accomplice going back ten years, the prodigious guitarist Vicente Bögeholz, unveiling written compositions nurtured by their Latin and European influences.

Only six months after the Chilean guitarist Vicente Bögeholz and the Argentinian bandoneonist Juanjo Mosalini met in Paris in the summer of 2000, the music critics highly acclaimed the “seamless ensemble playing of this unique duo” :

“…Every note convinces the listener that these are two musical soul mates, listening sensitively one to another, showing intuitive perfection in playing together, quite apart from the fact that each of them is an accomplished musician and virtuoso in his own right. …” (AZ)

“…The tango musicians of today are taking Piazzola´s innovations ever further. Since the 90s, a new repertoire has been evolving from the spirit of Argentinian tango which no longer needs the sharp, accentuated tango rhythms to be a tango. Concise structures, phrases, tone colours and unmistakeable gestures characterise the tango of recent years, going way beyond worn-out clichés. … Ensembles such as the Duo Bögeholz Mosalini consistently pursue an expansion of the repertoire, especially for the two instruments that are at the heart of the tango, the bandoneón and the guitar. …” (Dr.Eckhard Weber, Berlin)

In their programmes Flores negras or De las tierras Bögeholz & Mosalini present the stylistic variation of tango music that is so rich in contrast. Their new repertoire underlines the fluid transition to the aesthetics of a contemporary chamber music that is easily accessible. Including a string quintet in the programmes Concert d´aujourd´hui or Tango Inventions underlines the universal character of this music.

Their interpretations have been broadcast throughout the world and in Germany by all the ARD public stations. June 2004 saw the release of their duo CD “Villa Luro“ and April 2010 the septet CD ‘Invenciones tangueras’ with the Quatuor Danel and the double bassist, Titus Oppmann (Marc Aurel / Raumklang).

In the spring of 2006, the Duo Bögeholz-Mosalini was awarded the German World Music Prize (MDR Figaro). “

In 1933, Arnold Schönberg defined ‘Brahms the Progressive’ as the initiator of a free language: ‘He was a great innovator in the area of musical language.’ This disc covers the composer’s entire life, starting with the Variations op. 9, composed at the age of just 20 years, then touching the middle period of his production with the Rhapsodies op. 79, and finishing with compositions which constitute his farewell to the piano: the Fantaisies op. 116 and the Klavierstücke op. 119, written when he was in his sixties. The feature common to these piano compositions is their characteristic musical language and their Brahmsian power, which is recognised in the first notes of his youthful compositions and is still found, unambiguously, in the intimacy of his last works.

Disciple of Vlado Perlemuter and Jean Hubeau, Michel Dalberto has stood out as a master and ardent defender of French music in the course of a thirty-year career. His signature for the Aparté label of a series of recordings devoted to Debussy, Fauré, Ravel, and Franck marks his awaited return.

Each episode will be recorded live and accompanied by a video. This first release, recorded on a Fazioli piano at the Teatro Bibiena on 30 May 2015, in the framework of the Mantua Chamber Music Festival, honours Claude Debussy :

„Two years ago, near Venice, I played pieces by Debussy on a Fazioli piano, and it seemed obvious to me that this piano provided the ideal sonority for this music made of light and shadow. The idea of recording a recital in a beautiful Italian theatre came as a logical continuation. The „Bibiena“ (from the name of its architect, Antonio Bibiena) in Mantua was inaugurated in December 1769 – Mozart gave a concert there a month later. It is, with the San Carlo in Naples, my finest memory of an Italian theatre where I played.“ (Michel Dalberto)
