“Children of the Future” is the Steve Miller Band’s debut album released in 1968 and now is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018. This band is known to combine elements from the blues and psychedelic rock while this album, in particular, explores themes about the British blues revival in its musicianship.

A psychedelic blues rock-out, 1968’s Children of the Future marked Steve Miller’s earliest attempt at the ascent that brought him supersonic superstardom. Recorded at Olympic Studios in London with storied producer Glyn Johns at the helm, the set played out as pure West Coast rock inflected with decade-of-love psychedelia but intriguingly cloaked in the misty pathos of the U.K. blues ethic. Though bandmate Boz Scaggs contributed a few songs, the bulk of the material was written by Miller while working as a janitor at a music studio in Texas earlier in the year. The best of his efforts resonate in a side one free-for-all that launches with the keys and swirls of the title track and segues smoothly through “Pushed Me Through It” and “In My First Mind,” bound for the epic, hazy, lazy, organ-inflected “The Beauty of Time Is That It’s Snowing,” which ebbs and flows in ways that are continually surprising. The second half of the LP is cast in a different light – a clutch of songs that groove together but don’t have the same sleepy flow. Though it has since attained classic status – Miller himself was still performing it eight years later – Scaggs’ “Baby’s Callin’ Me Home” is a sparse, lightly instrumentalized piece of good old ’60s San Francisco pop. His “Steppin’ Stone,” on the other hand, is a raucous, heavy-handed blues freakout with a low-riding bass and guitar breaks that angle out in all directions. And whether the title capitalized at all on the Monkees’ similarly titled song, released a year earlier, is anybody’s guess. Children of the Future was a brilliant debut. And while it is certainly a product of its era, it’s still a vibrant reminder of just how the blues co-opted the mainstream to magnificent success.

“Rock Love” is the American rock band The Steve Miller Band’s sixth studio album released in 1971. This album consists of blues-rock and psychedelic rock elements that are very different from all their previous albums thus giving them a newer sound. The album consists of three blues-rock tracks recorded live, including lengthy jam-style “Love Shock” which lasts nearly 12 minutes and includes an extensive drum solo, and four studio tracks.

Often called “Rock Bottom” by Steve Miller’s fans, Rock Love did help to rebound Miller’s sagging career at the time. Consisting of Miller and a couple of hired hands, this part live, part studio effort had no hits on it and was generally panned by critics (who may not have realized that Capitol issued this leftovers album without his consent as he recuperated from a motorcycle accident). Time has not made their words sound any kinder, for Rock Love neither rocks nor shows any sort of love within the course of seven tunes.

Tracklist:
01 – The Gangster Is Back
02 – Blues With Out Blame
03 – Love Shock
04 – Let Me Serve You
05 – Rock Love
06 – Harbor Lights
07 – Deliverance

Produced by Steve Miller.

“Your Saving Grace” is The Steve Miller Band’s fourth studio album released in November of 1969. This album includes more elements of blues than their previous albums but still stays true to their psychedelic rock sound.

Your Saving Grace is a much more earthy collection of tunes when compared to the band’s previous three long-players. While there are distinct psychedelic remnants of the Boz Scaggs (guitar/vocals) and Jim Peterman (keyboards) era, the addition of keyboardists Ben Sidran and Nicky Hopkins – which began on the Steve Miller Band’s previous effort, Brave New World – adds a jazzier facet to this second incarnation of the group. Harking back to the band’s blues roots, Your Saving Grace includes a couple of distinct blues originals – such as the up-tempo and gospel-doused “Don’t Let Nobody Turn You Around” and a somewhat uninspired arrangement of “Motherless Children,” which sounds more synchronous with the Sailor or Brave New World albums. The funky “Little Girl,” the elegantly pensive “Baby’s House,” and the title track – which is oddly programmed as the LP’s final cut – are among the highlights of this disc. Once again, the production is handled by Glyn Johns, whose contributions here are more subdued, yet no less noticeable. This is especially true of Miller’s crystalline slide guitar licks on Lonnie Turner’s cryptically titled “The Last Wombat in Mecca.” The same upfront clean sound holds true on the laid-back and bluesy “Feel So Glad” – which is punctuated by some inspired and unmistakable ivory tickling by studio wunderkind Nicky Hopkins. Although the album is not as thoroughly solid as earlier efforts, Your Saving Grace and the follow-up, Number 5, are definite bridges between the early trippy montages prevalent on Children of the Future and the direction that Miller would take on his much more successful mid-’70s discs.

Tracklist:
01 – Little Girl
02 – Just A Passin’ Fancy In A Midnite Dream
03 – Don’t Let Nobody Turn You Around

Stuff Smith, born as Hezekiah Leroy Gordon Smith in 1909 passed away in 1967, one year after this unique recording session. “Violin Summit” featured Stuff Smith, Stephane Grappelli, Svend Asmussen and Jean Luc-Ponty (with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, drummer Alex Riel) in concert on September 30, 1966. It was an unique opportunity to have four of the best violin players together in one concert. The music came off quite well, in large part probably because the four violinists were paired in different sets with all four actually featured together on only one take, “It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing”.

Four of the greatest violinists in jazz get together for a once-in-a-lifetime live summit. Dane Svend Asmussen, followed in the steps of jazz legend Joe Venuti; Frenchman Stephané Grappelli together with Django Reinhardt defined European swing; Afro-American Stuff Smith built the bridge between swing and bop; Frenchman Jean-Luc Ponty catapulted the instrument into the modern era (for more on the four, check out their individual releases on MPS). Copenhagen’s famous Club Montmartre’s rhythm section with pianist Kenny Drew and bassist Niels Henning Pederson guide the violinists as they climb the heights. Ponty’s Summit Soul shows off the Europeans as Stephané, Svend and Jean-Luc solo in that order. The two Frenchmen take center stage on Sonny Rollins’ bop classic Pentup House, with first Grappelli, then Ponty soloing. Stuff Smith’s Timme’s Blues has Stuff and Svend vocalizing before going into solos. On Ellington’s It Don’t Mean A Thing first Grappelli, then Asmussen, Ponty, and Smith decisively demonstrate they all ‘got that swing’. Pennies From Heaven is all Grappelli, and it’s worth every cent. Smith’s Only Time Will Tell features Stuff, and he has a lot to say in so short a span. The summit ends with Svend, Jean-Luc, and Stephané soloing on Hot Toddy, an exhilarating final kick to an album that warms the soul.

This album was recorded at a series of Sun Ra appearances at jazz festivals in Germany in 1970 and stands as a documentation of jazz history; with an unusual instrumentation, Sun Ra’s avant-garde 21-piece big band creates noises and percussive sounds that are out of this world.

“… combines frenzied drumming and marching tunes with reed-shredding solos and psychedelic electronic noisemaking.” – The New Yorker

“… ideally captures Sun Ra and his Arkestra at its most otherworldly self. Individual and collective sounds reach for ears at times beyond human comprehension … offers the next best thing to what it must have been like to experience the path that Ra offered his listeners in a live concert, perhaps the most uninhibited platform for his musical message.” – All About Jazz

“I play space music. When one day humans on far away planets hear the sounds of cosmic beings, the music will seem familiar, for while they were on Earth they had heard Sun Ra.” – Sun Ra

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 34:24 minutes | 394 MB | Genre: Alternative

Started in early 2011, The Garden consists of twin brothers Wyatt & Fletcher Shears. As insanely prolific as the twin brothers in The Garden are, if you count their side projects the pair have over 50 releases in 10 years to their names, one never gets the impression that their works are tossed off. Spontaneous or freeform, perhaps, but the band’s releases always seem to have a certain askew contemplation behind them. Mirror Might Steal Your Charm, the brothers’ fifth album, underscores this with recordings that are paradoxically, among the pair’s most matured as well as most unpredictable tracks to date.

Mid-album track “Who am I going to share all of this wine with?” illustrates this as much as any other tune on the album. Opening with a driving, rumbling bass that would make Peter Hook green, the brothers ride the gnarly groove before suddenly shifting into a sharp, haunting clang, only to fade out with a noise freak-out including bluesy sax. That is to say, for pretty much the whole album, it feels as through the Shears brothers are at the tip of a wave, crashing forward. But instead of floundering, they ride from one interesting collision to the next propelled as much by the thrill of the unexpected as their own hard to crack psyches. No doubt, one of the enduring charms of the Garden has been the brother’s weirdness. (Though, one wonders if they think they’re weird and if they would be insulted if told they’re weird…) But, no matter how you slice is, this group is unusual. Few groups have been so eager to blend together lo-fi electronics with raw, garage-punk drums and bass (if any) and astoundingly, the Shears brothers fine the through line between the two mercurial fields and tie them together. They have been mashing electronics with the analogue for a while now, and their fourth album, Haha found them finding the connecting sweet spot. But, whereas that album focused on contrasting the two attacks, here, the brothers weave their askew electronic experiments directly into the fabric of their live instrumentation. “A message for myself” is a frantic rant carried by a soundclash of the two sides, except that it works together to make a shifting web. That’s not to mention the band’s somewhat alien perspective. The duo seem to switch between sharing honest, if someone cryptic axioms. “Message” has the wonderful thesis, “Keep in mind, everyone is equal. Nothing makes you more human than anyone else.” But, for each Aesop style declaration, the band also adds a more labyrinthine comment. “Message” ponders resurrection in a twisting narrative. The heavyweight smasher, “Voodoo Luck,” which is one of the duos nastiest bass/drums numbers to date, details a sort of restlessness while the brothers hiss out, “Getting’ tired of fixin’ things, constantly looking around, my space is personal and now it seems that’s it voodoo luck.” I have no idea what this means. That being said, this doesn’t seem to be random word assemblage, but more like something strange and peculiar trying to communicate on a different level. As this hard rumbling and spastic beeping tracks spin by, it becomes more and more apparent that not only is this the way to play it, but these two different outside strategies work together to create something unique and previously untapped. “We do our own thing see,” the brothers muse on “Banana Peel” and boy is that true. Likewise, closing track “No Destination” has its mandate spelled out in its title. Yet, that being said, this album doesn’t feel aimless. To the contrary, where previous Garden albums have found the band darting out in all directions, Charm finds the band finally settling into what they truly are, which is something unusual indeed. The only question now, is will they further grow out this form, or rapidly shed this exterior into another being going forward? Don’t bother making a guess. For all the summation of their previous works found on Charm, there is a newfound stability that only highlights just how unpredictable this group is. To further press the matter- unpredictability doesn’t always suggest thoughtlessness. Rather, it can suggest being three or four steps ahead of everyone else.

The Ensemble Pygmalion continues its interpretative work on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, proposing the Mass in B minor, BWV 232 in its version of 1733.

Pygmalion’s first recording for Alpha, with Bach’s Missae Breves BWV 234 and 235 (ALPHA 130) was received very enthusiastically by the critics and awarded, in particular, the Diapason d’Or of the Year 2008 and the Orphée d’Or 2008 by the Académie du Disque Lyrique.

Given the work’s historical importance, this third recording by the ensemble is also the occasion for Raphaël Pichon to show the extent of his maturity, placing him in the front rank of today’s young conductors.

2018 will be branded as “Gewandhausjahr”: Gewandhausorchester celebrates its 275th birthday and the inauguration of Andris Nelsons as new Gewandhauskapellmeister.

Andris Nelsons’ latest release with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, featuring Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 and the Prelude to Act 1 from Wagner’s Lohengrin, was recorded live in concert and is the second installment in a multi-album Bruckner series on the Deutsche Grammophon label.

Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony is known as his “Romantic” Symphony. Bruckner himself chose this term after starting work on it in January 1874. “The music gives us an insight into Bruckner’s psyche and allows us to sense what he was feeling and thinking at the time of the work’s composition,” says Nelsons, and there is no denying that the symphony’s musical language is unusually personal and intimate.”

Andris Nelsons brings youthful energy, fluidity and rhythmic impulse, while still leaving room for Bruckner’s music’s monumental sound blocks that gives these works a completely new flavour.

By including selected instrumental works by Wagner in the Bruckner Symphony Cycle, his idea is to demonstrate the influences but more importantly their differences, for clearly the two men could not have been more disparate in character.

This second ambitious long-term recording project is consciously combined with the production of DG’s first complete Shostakovich cycle that Andris Nelsons is recording with the Boston Symphony Orchestra which has already been awarded with two Grammys as well as various other awards.

The angel as a symbol of the tango-dance, death and resurrection

Without losing the romance, the violence, eroticism and devotion of the traditional tango that he saw as empty and hollowed out, Piazzolla renewed and modified it with elements of European art music, Argentine folklore and jazz, and thus tango took on a new meaning and shape.

The writer Alberto Rodriguez Muñoz approached Piazzolla in 1961 with a request to write music for his play Tango del ángel, which is about an angel appearing in an apartment block in Buenos Aires to cleanse the souls of its inhabitants. The titles Introducción al ángel, Milonga del ángel, and Muerte del ángel were created. The latter, a four-part fugue with hard, uncompromising harmonies and rhythms, impressively shows how far Piazzolla pushed the boundaries of traditional tango.

When the play was performed in 1962, even the previously hostile parts of the musical public in Argentina had to admit how fitting and successful this music was and the titles, especially Milonga del ángel, gained extraordinary popularity.

The motives of angel, Ángel, and devil, Diablo, appear in many of the tangos composed by Astor Piazzolla: “In my story, angels and devils mix – you have to have something in everything.”

For a concert with his quintet at the Philharmonic Hall in New York in 1965, he wrote the series of Diablo titles: the spooky Tango del diablo, the intimate Romance del diablo and the wild, lashing Vayamos al diablo.

James Ehnes takes a break from the 19th and 20th century repertoire and has recorded for the first time in his career four of the most famous baroque violin concertos – Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the first four works in his set of 12, op8. James also directs the Sydney Symphony.

The Vivaldi is prefaced by two famous violin sonatas – Tartini’s Devils Trill in the skillful arrangement by Fritz Kreisler which is very faithful to the original text, to which Kreisler adds the famous cadenza in the finale.
Leclair, one the few composers to have been murdered, was known as ‘The French Corelli’. Of his op9 set of 12 sonatas for violin, the third has become the most popular for its ‘Tambourin’ finale, depicting a pipe-and–drum dance with drone effects – all good fun!

Earning a Grammy nomination and Gramophone Magazine’s Young Artist of the Year award in 2015, Joseph Moog is one of the finest young virtuoso pianists of our time. On this release, Moog turns to Chopin’s piano sonatas. Piano Sonata No.1 is a rarely heard work. It shows the young composer as yet untouched by the influences of Beethoven and the other great composer-pianists of the period. It owes more to Mozart and the late classical period. By the time he composed the Piano Sonata No.2, Chopin had fully absorbed the early romanticism of Hummel and Field, and developed a strong distinctive voice. The slow movement, a funeral march, is one of the most famous pieces of music ever composed. Piano Sonata No.3 is a masterpiece, one of the greatest works for piano of the 19th century, and displays the total mastery Chopin had achieved by the end of his tragically short life. This Onyx recording represents yet another outstanding achievement by Joseph Moog.

The eagerly awaited 3rd volume in the critically acclaimed Prokofiev Symphony cycle from Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The original version of the 4th, probably the least performed of the seven is coupled with the 5th, arguably the most performed. The 4th is based on material from the ballet ‘The Prodigal Son’. The symphony was commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky to mark the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The 5th dates from 1944 at the height of the Russian struggle against the Nazi invasion. Although considered a wartime work, the overall mood is one of optimism. Yet again music from another project was used to good effect in a Prokofiev symphony. The powerful slow movement draws on music composed in 1936 and intended for an abortive film of Pushkin’s ‘Queen of Spades’.

Tracklist:
Sergei Sergeievitch Prokofiev (1891-1953)

For his debut on the ECM label, Estonian pianist Kristjan Randalu surrounded himself with American guitarist Ben Monder and Finnish drummer Markku Ounaskari. A combination suggested by Manfred Eicher, the producer of this album recorded at La Buissonne in the summer of 2017. Absence is first and foremost a beautiful introduction to the ample and rather lyrical style of play of the musician who says he’s been most influenced by his fellow countrymen and composers Erkki-Sven Tüür and Tõnu Kõrvits. A former student of John Taylor and Django Bates, Randalu studied classical music for a long time before turning his attention to jazz. A knowledge that transpires in his piano as well as his writing. His impressive technique and the narrative power of his improvisations give his musical universe a multitude of colours. A palette that Ben Monder – a very much-underrated guitarist – and Markku Ounaskari take hold of in unison.

Over the years, Layla Ramezan has been in touch with Iranian composers all over the world, such as Hormoz Farhat, Behzad Ranjbaran, Alireza Mashaekhi, Ahmad Pejman, Nader Mashayekhi, Iradj Sahbaï, Fozié Majd and Reza Vali. As pianist of the Matka contemporary ensemble, she has been the instigator of several projects of inter-cultural musical contact with Iran: in 2013, she organised a four-month residency at the Maison Baron in Geneva for Karen Keyhani, following the Matka ensemble’s commission of a work by this young Iranian composer. A concert was organised, entitled “A Contemporary Reading of Persian Music” and bringing together Iranian and French composers. In 2015 she set up a project comprising new works for small ensemble by Iranian, French, Swiss and American composers. These were premiered in February 2015 at the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, United States, and performed again in Geneva.

In August 2014, she was invited to give a conference on contemporary piano notation at the Tehran University of Arts, as a prelude to two exceptional recitals in December 2014 which were entitled “100 Years of Iranian Piano Music”. For this event, she brought together almost twenty Iranian composers from all over the world, mixing styles and generations, and including many young creators from contemporary Iran.

The project „100 years of Iranian piano music“ continues all over the world, its scope ceaselessly expanding through the creation of new works by young composers or the study of pieces from the rich Iranian repertoire.

Since 1987, the year he founded Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet has been a major figure in musical life, but he is also an actor in a class of his own. Major because it is thanks to his love of French music, the grands motets, large forms, and works both known and less known, that we have discovered or rediscovered treasures by Campra, Boismortier, Charpentier, Lully, Handel, Striggio, Offenbach, Grétry… Major because he is respected and loved by a great number of singers and stage directors with whom he has collaborated… And in a class of his own because he has an uncommon (or even unique, in the current musical landscape!) capacity for sharing his music directly with the audience. Alpha is delighted to welcome this great, ‘total’ artist to begin a long-term collaboration and release the fruit of his latest research, his wishes, his discoveries and his follies. In addition to the Don Quichotte concocted with his accomplices Shirley & Dino, the festivities begin in Venice, with Vivaldi’s deservedly famous Gloria and Magnificat, but in a version that we are not accustomed to hearing: ‘We have lots of things to discover in these works that we thought we knew,’ says an enthusiastic Hervé Niquet. ‘We propose a version of this « sausage » that is never heard.

Don Luis: a Spaniard at the court of Louis XIII… Luis de Briceño’s arrival in France was marked by a wave of enthusiasm. The Spaniard was at the heart of a polemic that questioned the supremacy of the lute, an instrument cherished by French music lovers of the beginning of the 17th century. Our rekindled interest lies not in this controversy but in the beauty of Briceño’s compositions and the freedom they offer the musicians who play them. This man of incisive wit and character, nicknamed « El Fenix de Paris », once said about the polemic he caused: « Todos se burlan de mi y yo me burlo de todos, porque si me llaman asno ellos son neçios y tontos… » « Everyone makes fun of me and I make fun of everyone, because they call me a donkey they are crazy and foolish idiots… » On this album discover le Poème Harmonique in a repertoire bearing the marked touch of popular Spanish music, accompanied by the delightful song of Isabelle Druet and Claire Lefilliâtre.

“What’s the matter with them Billy? They sit there like a lot of stuffed pigs!” Elgar commented to his friend W.H Reid, the leader of the Queen’s Hall Orchestra after the chilly reception given to the 2nd Symphony at its premiere in 1911. More emotionally complex and ambiguous than the first symphony, the 2nd seems to hint at the apocalyptic events that would be unleashed just three years on. “Be like a woman dropping a flower on a man’s grave” wrote the composer of the ‘Spirit of Delight’ theme in the coda of the second movement.

This eagerly awaited Elgar 2 from Petrenko and the RLPO will further delight those fans who bought their recording of the 1st Symphony, released on Onyx to critical acclaim last year.

“Petrenko’s tempos in the long opening movement are admirably flexible, but it’s in the last two that interpretation and playing seem to me finest; the finale achieves a noble grandeur and melancholy.” (Sunday Times)
