Romain Pilon – Copper (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 44:22 minutes | 478 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Jazz & People

Jazz & People, the leading French crowdfunded jazz label, is proud to present Romain Pilon’s Copper, an ideal title for the conductor from which cables are made, and which sets the tone for this high-energy trio propelled by groove with a capital G and electric fusions. After three albums whose atmospheres were more acoustic, including “The Magic Eye” with Ben Wendel and Walter Smith III, which showed his contemporary and dynamic appropriation of tradition and his allegiance to the current movement heralding the resurgence of the guitar on the New York and Paris jazz scenes, Romain Pilon is now expanding his musical universe through the more eclectic Copper project.

Reconnecting with his teenage influences, the guitarist has conjured a repertoire that he had in fact never played before, and which reveals an unexpected aspect of his talent. Using an array of pedals and effects which broaden his musical palette, he reinjects into his music memories of Led Zeppelin, the experimentations of Herbie Hancock in his Headhunters period, the atmospheric fusions of Weather Report, and the electric brutalism of Miles Davis during his 1970’s “electric years”… all the while listening intently to contemporary musicians such as the English singer Laura Mvula, the Australian group Hiatus Kaiyote or the prodigy Taylor McFerrin.
With Copper, he also shows allegiance to the movement incarnated by various musicians he rubbed shoulders with at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, with whom he performed on the stage and with whom he shares a certain spirit, such as Christian Scott, Lionel Loueke, Kendrick Scott or Esperanza Spalding, who strive to anchor jazz in the present.

Assuming his desire to play groove music and his dreams of sonic fusions, a quest for playful metrics and unexpected textures, Romain Pilon has come up with an unusual trio format, one without a bassist, and founded on an axis constituted by various keyboards (Fender Rhodes piano with effects, analogic synthesizers) played by Tony Paeleman, the new and highly in-demand specialist (Vincent Peirani’s Living Being, Anne Paceo’s Circles, The Watershed, etc), and Fred Pasqua’s drumming, whose busy and complex playing gives the trio an irresistible dynamic.

Faithful to his concept of a clear approach to playing, emphasizing the melodic quality of his inspiration, Romain Pilon, who was encouraged when graduating from Berklee by none other than Pat Metheny himself, asserts a more biting style of playing in this context, with flashes of electricity, and suffused with vibrations that make Copper a new high-energy chapter in the career of a musician who has fulfilled his early promise and now has an international audience.

The album features two special guests, musicians who also have the twinfold culture of jazz and groove, of acoustic and electric playing : the American saxophonist Seamus Blake, a former partner of John Scofield, co-founder of Bloomdaddies with his alter ego Chris Cheek, and who has an impressive maestria when it comes to locking into a groove; and the French pianist Pierre de Bethmann who, exclusively on piano, confronts with his exceptional sense of melody the electric keyboards of Tony Paeleman. Both find their role naturally in the universe of Copper, evolving with ease in this highly-charged sonic environment.

JUNO Award winning chart-toppers Said The Whale have announced a deluxe edition release of their 2017 LP As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide via Hidden Pony Records. Released one year after the original on March 30, the album will include 10 additional tracks, 5 B-sides, 4 acoustic versions, and 1 new cover song. To celebrate the release, the band has shared one of the previously unreleased tracks “Congratulations”.

Previously operating as a five-piece, the current trio – made up of frontmen Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester and keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown – have created their most collaborative, focused record to date. Previous releases highlighted the contrast between the two founders’ eclectic rock influences and salt-of-the-earth folksiness. Here, their styles become one. Despite the album’s many adventurous sonic forays, it remains true to the spirit of their classic work. At its core, As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide is a singer-songwriter record, guided by introspective lyrics and alchemical group harmonies from Ben, Tyler and Jaycelyn.

Additionally, the band will be releasing a 5 episode podcast titled Demoitis – available on iTunes later this month. Each episode explores a song from As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide as well as featuring discussions with peers in the Canadian music scene such as Max Kerman (Arkells), Graham Wright (Tokyo Police Club), Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother) and more.

The Kink Kontroversy was a considerable leap forward in terms of quality, but it pales next to Face to Face, one of the finest collections of pop songs released during the ’60s. Conceived as a loose concept album, Face to Face sees Ray Davies’ fascination with English class and social structures flourish, as he creates a number of vivid character portraits. Davies’ growth as a lyricist coincided with the Kinks’ musical growth. Face to Face is filled with wonderful moments, whether it’s the mocking Hawaiian guitars of the rocker “Holiday in Waikiki,” the droning Eastern touches of “Fancy,” the music hall shuffle of “Dandy,” or the lazily rolling “Sunny Afternoon.” And that only scratches the surface of the riches of Face to Face, which offers other classics like “Rosy Won’t You Please Come Home,” “Party Line,” “Too Much on My Mind,” “Rainy Day in June,” and “Most Exclusive Residence for Sale,” making the record one of the most distinctive and accomplished albums of its time.

The Kinks’ second album, Kinda Kinks, was rush-recorded on either side (and in the midst) of a world tour that took them all the way to Australia in the course of bridging the 1964-1965 New Year. Under those circumstances, the fact that every cut but one was an original was no small tribute to the songwriting ability of Ray Davies, even if most of the songs were less than first-rate because what was first-rate was also highly memorable, and what wasn’t also wasn’t bad. In the space of two frantic late-December and mid-January sessions, and a brutal week in February of 1965, the group cut 11 songs to fill out a long-player that was already destined to contain “Tired of Waiting for You” (a product of the previous summer’s work, held back by producer Shel Talmy for a single). Also along for the ride were the latter’s driving B-side “Come on Now” and “Something Better Beginning” (both cut in December 1964). So the resulting record was uneven but filled with promise, and possessed of at least three bright spots additionally, and equally important, this album showcased a much more sophisticated sound, Dave Davies’ guitar turned down (and even switched to acoustic in a couple of spots) as Ray Davies began exploring aspects of emotions and storytelling that transcended anything in the group’s prior output “Nothin’ in This World Can Stop Me Worryin’ ‘Bout That Girl” may have been a mouthful of a title, but it also put them right in the front of the British Invasion pack for seriousness and complexity, out in front of where the Beatles or almost any of the competition were in early 1965, but it didn’t stop them from switching gears to the bluesy “Naggin’ Woman.”

Although the best of the Kinks’ early work is among the best British Invasion music, their initial pair of albums was far less consistent than those of the Beatles, Stones, and Who. Aside from the great “You Really Got Me,” this was a shabby, disappointing set with surprisingly thin production. As R&B cover artists, the Kinks weren’t nearly as adept as the Stones and Yardbirds; Ray Davies’ original tunes were, “You Really Got Me” aside, perfunctory Merseybeat-ish pastiches, and a couple of tunes that producer Shel Talmy penned for the group (“Bald Headed Woman,” “I’ve Been Driving on Bald Mountain”) were simply abominable. The rave-up treatments of the R&B standards “Got Love If You Want It” and “Cadillac” were good, and the simple “Stop Your Sobbing” would eventually be covered by the Pretenders, but overall this is really patchy.

Ray Davies and company had already participated in one failed television musical when the movie Percy came along it wasn’t as original as Arthur, nor did Davies have nearly as much to do with its creation, but he still outdid himself given the material at hand. Directed and co-produced by Ralph Thomas, who had been responsible for some brilliant thrillers (The Clouded Yellow, Above Us the Waves) and very popular comedies (Doctor in the House) in past decades, Percy was the story of the world’s first penis transplant (it was probably inspired, or at least justified, by big-budget efforts of the period like Myra Breckinridge). Although virtually unseen in the United States, it was still popular enough to yield a sequel (Percy’s Progress), but its real impact came from its soundtrack. Davies wrote some hauntingly beautiful ballads and some solid blues and country as well “God’s Children” and “Animals in the Zoo” have turned up on some career anthologies, but there’s a lot more to Percy than those two tracks. “Completely” is as fine a slow blues as the band ever recorded, with a sizzling performance by Dave Davies, and “Dreams” is a pretty solid rocker, even up alongside “Animals in the Zoo.” To this day the album has never appeared in the U.S. catalog recorded at the tail end of their contract with Pye Records in England and Warner/Reprise in America, and connected with a movie that was never going to see much exposure in the U.S.A., Reprise passed on it at the time.

The Kinks came into their own as album artists and Ray Davies fully matured as a songwriter with The Kink Kontroversy, which bridged their raw early British Invasion sound with more sophisticated lyrics and thoughtful production. There are still powerful ravers like the hit “Til the End of the Day” (utilizing yet another “You Really Got Me”-type riff) and the abrasive, Dave Davies-sung cover of “Milk Cow Blues,” but tracks like the calypso pastiche “I’m on an Island,” where Ray sings of isolation with a forlorn yet merry bite, were far more indicative of their future direction. Other great songs on this underrated album include the uneasy nostalgia of “Where Have All the Good Times Gone?,” the plaintive, almost fatalistic ballads “Ring the Bells” and “The World Keeps Going Round,” and the Dave Davies-sung declaration of independence “I Am Free.”

During the 1970s, and especially the 1980s, Manhattan Transfer topped the charts with its clever blend of jazz vocal light, doo-wop and cabaret. Following the passing of their leader, Tim Hauser, in 2014 due to a heart attack, very few observers gave them much of a chance. But The Junction is proof that the flame still shines bright, thanks in part to the arrival of Trist Curless (a rather surprising replacement for Hauser) and the intact virtuosity of Cheryl Bentyne, Janis Siegel and Alan Paul. Nine years after the surprising The Chick Corea Songbook, Manhattan Transfer offers a rather eclectic repertoire, mixing original compositions and well-chosen covers (US3/Herbie Hancock, Rickie Lee Jones, XTC). All in all, The Junction is as much a beautiful tribute to Tim Hauser as the signal of a new start.

The close relationship between the musicians in the Aruán Ortiz Trio is quite clear based on their incredible collaboration and balance on this live-recorded album. Their energy and passion for this unique program shine throughout their Zurich performance.

When Aruán Ortiz appeared with his new trio at Zürich’s unerhört!-festival on 26 November 2016, the sense of anticipation was palpable; how would the music from the well-received studio album Hidden Voices feel in a live context. The trio were at the end of their first European tour, and on a roll. Immediately after the concert Ortiz was already enthusing about the interaction and musical dialogue. “Mulling it over” – like the aging process of wine; carrying one or two pieces around with you for years, till the final versions emerge. In Ortiz’ case this applies to compositions such as “Fractal Sketches” and “Analytical Symmetry”, which were first heard on the studio album Hidden Voices, here in a new line-up, with Brad Jones on bass and Chad Taylor on drums, after an intensive two-week tour. That close relationship between the musicians and the song grows tremendously the more you play it, and it develops a musical trust within the band. When all goes well, the sound and energy are in tune with the compositional idea. On this live album we can hear just how well it went on 26 November 2016 at the unerhört!-festival in Zürich.

“Back to Broadway” is the twenty-sixth studio album by Barbra Streisand, released in 1993. The album was Streisand’s second collection of songs from Broadway musicals, after 1985’s “The Broadway Album”. It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and gave her the title of “only female artist to have a number one album in four different decades”. The album has been certified 2× Platinum by the RIAA, her fifth album to do so.

While still an impressive recording, Back to Broadway is less impressive than its predecessor, The Broadway Album, for a number of reasons. The first is material. Barbra Streisand seems to be attracted to certain musicals, and here she chooses more songs from shows like West Side Story and Guys and Dolls that she didn’t pick the last time around. Still attracted more to current composers than earlier ones, Streisand picks five songs by Stephen Sondheim (who has once again obligingly rewritten lyrics to suit her) and three by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The Sondheim material is worthy; the Lloyd Webber is not. (Though the intensity with which she sings “With One Look” from Sunset Boulevard suggests an eerie identification with the show’s demented silent movie queen Norma Desmond.) Further, Streisand has done duets on two selections with people better identified with the material — Michael Crawford, the original Phantom in Phantom of the Opera, on his signature song, “The Music of the Night,” and Johnny Mathis, who has sung a medley of West Side Story songs in his shows for years, on a medley of “I Have a Love/One Hand, One Heart” from that show. Finally, the arrangements and production lean more toward contemporary pop and light jazz in many instances, the influence of commercial producers and arrangers like David Foster. All of which means that Back to Broadway is somewhat uneven. When Streisand takes on songs as well suited to her as “Everybody Says Don’t” (from Sondheim’s Anyone Can Whistle) and “Children Will Listen” (from his Into the Woods), she nears her work on The Broadway Album. Elsewhere, she is merely a phenomenal singer working against material or arrangements that aren’t quite appropriate to her. ~ William Ruhlmann

Bill Conti’s soundtrack to the film Rocky includes one of the most iconic movie songs ever composed, the number one single and Oscar nominated hit Gonna Fly Now. Featured in a pivotal scene in the film, the American Film Institute includes the inspirational theme at number 58 on its list of the 100 greatest motion picture songs. Conti composed, orchestrated, conducted and produced this album, his first big break that launched his legendary career as a film composer.

“When I wrote the script for Rocky, I wanted passion music. I wanted a symphony of powerful men, of lonely women, of thick-necked losers, of human ships that crash in the night. Of love. Of courage. Of dignity cast in bronze. I only wished the music could come from inside me, but I was born with ears of stone. Bill Conti shook everyone’s hand (at the initial consultation) and walked out the door. Three weeks later, Conti walked in the door with music under his arm. How did this thin man seize the soul of every character and set it to music?!”

The Grammy-winning American pianist and composer Billy Childs is a contemporary-classical composer as much as a jazz artist, but “Rebirth” means exactly what it says. Much of this scintillating set is a return to the snaking quickfire hard-bop Childs played in the 70s, albeit infused with all the musics he has visited so intelligently since, and his partners here include alto saxist Steve Wilson, Charles Lloyd drummer Eric Harland, and Chilean singer Claudia Acuña. The snappy, twisting Backwards Bop never lets up, whether in Childs’ cannily paced and sleekly phrased piano improv against Harland’s whipcrack accents, or Wilson’s swerving, Art Pepper-ish alto solo. “Rebith” won the 2018 Grammy Award for “Best Jazz Instrumental Album”.

Four-time Grammy Award-winner Billy Childs has released his debut recording for Mack Avenue Records and it’s a keeper. The diverse compositions on Rebirth feature such notable artists as Claudia Acuna who co-wrote the title track with Billy Childs, vocalist Alicia Olatuja on “Stay” and who sang on Childs’ Laura Nyro project, his bandmates Steve Wilson on alto & soprano saxophones, Hans Glawischnig on acoustic bass and Eric Harland on drums. Ido Meshulam and Rogerio Boccato play trombone and percussion respectively on “Rebirth.” Billy plays piano and produced the recording as well as composed and arranged all 8 songs.

On Rebirth, Billy Childs reaches back to the nexus of his varied musical experiences. “Tightrope,” with its insistent pulse and melodic introduction features his classical influences while three songs from his Windham Hill (record label) days – “Stay,” “Backwards Bop,” and “Starry Night” are recast to reflect his artistic growth. The percussive electricity of “Backwards Bop” and “Dance of Shiva” harken back to his days with J.J. Johnson and Freddie Hubbard while the well-placed coloring in his comps to Alicia Olatuja’s vocals on “Stay” are styled from his days with Freddie.

Standout soloing by Billy Childs and Steve Wilson on the beautiful “Rebirth” is worth more than several listens. This song is absolutely beautiful with Claudia Acuna’s stellar vocalese and the band’s excellent accompaniment. Overall, this project is another winner for Billy Childs and deserves to be in your record collection.

2018 will see the release of British Rock band FM’s eleventh studio album, “Atomic Generation” and plenty of touring, including their first-ever USA appearance in May – headlining MelodicRock Fest 5 in Chicago, IL. To kick off the year FM will appear at Giants of Rock festival in Minehead in January with more UK dates underway. FM are true Melodic Rock Giants and “Atomic Generation” is going to build even more on their Rock solid foundations!

“Atomic Generation“ combines all qualities of the five-piece. No FM album since “Tough It Out“ (1989) has ever been so close to the original sound of the band (“Golden Days“). Not only the unique voice of Steve Overland but also superb songwriting and high musicianship are remarkable. There’s definitely a lot of blues (“Playing Tricks On Me“ or “Stronger“) in it, too, easily bridging the gap to their more recent outputs.

“A Miracle”, the exciting eighth album from Groundation, the West Coast’s most accomplished reggae band, abounds with unique modal flourishes that reveal the jazz training of its founding members, taking the music to new heights of invention. Filled with anthemic tracks like “Hold Your Head Up” and “Liberation Call,” plus the group’s first love song, “Cupid’s Arrow”, Groundation revels in the unexpected. This is 21st century music meant to inspire and educate, Jah Music to elevate the mind and move the body.

Since the dawn of recorded sound, music can be seen as a giant tapestry to which all musicians lend their creative influence. One band focused on the explosive evolution of this musical ecosystem is Groundation. Rooted in the reggae one-drop sound of Jamaica, Groundation seamlessly incorporates the harmonic, polyrhythmic, and improvisational elements of jazz, breathing new life into both genres. Groundation’s 8th full-length studio album evokes the lasting and eternal influence of Bob Marley, as A Miracle features both Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt, founding members of Marley’s legendary backing vocal trio the I-Threes. The picture is completed by the pen of Neville Garrick, Marley’s art director from the time of the Rastaman Vibration album (1976). A Miracle takes the listener on a journey through the creation of life, the power of the Empress, and the balance of men and women.

Press To Meco – Here’s To The Fatigue (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 40:31 minutes | 962 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: Qobuz | Booklet, Front Cover | © Marshall Records

A few years after the release of their debut album, “Good Intent”, British alternative rock trio Press To MECO are back at it again with their sophomore effort, “Here’s To The Fatigue”. “A powerful amalgamation of angular riffs and pop sensibilities” – wrote Rocksound; “Billy Talent, Pulled Apart By Horses and Lower Than Atlantis roughly run through the progressive grinder”. – Ourzone.

A notable factor of the band and their music is, not only do they all sing the tracks, instead of one main vocalist, but they also harmonise with each other; this works well with their voices, blending together around the instruments, and creating a warm sound that fits with each song. The use of harmonization within songs like “If All Your Parts Don’t Make A Whole,” “Skip The Crawl,” and “A Quick Fix” showcase how diverse the vocals can be together and on their own, all working well. Another part of the album that works well is the instrumentation. The complex drumming from Lewis Williams works well to drive many of the songs, and make a juxtaposition from the simple, but by no means any less great, guitar and bass parts. Each part fits the theme of each song, for example, in the song “Howl”, the driving bass from Adam Roffey, and the great riff from Luke Caley come together to create an unforgettable track. Finally, each song have fantastic lyrics that resonate with each song, covering a diverse range of themes, and matching each instrumental within the song which, with some of the songs, allows the listener to hear the lyrics, for example, in “If All Your Parts Don’t Make A Whole”, the song uses the lyrics “I see disaster right round the corner”, and “find comfort in being alone” to show how it’s ok not to be perfect, something that can be relatable to the listener, and especially the band’s audience. If there were to be any criticisms, the intro to “A Place In It All” feels off rhythmically when the drums come in; it’s initially difficult to know where the beat is at the beginning, but it is a good song once all the instruments are in, but it does feel weird for that opening minute or so.

Overall, this album was worth the wait, as it will easily please fans who have been waiting since 2015, and something that will also please newcomers to the band, people who had never heard of them will enjoy this; the album does feel like a breath of fresh air in the alt-rock genre, and is enjoyable from start to finish.

Sawyer Fredericks was the winner of season eight of The Voice when he was only 16 years old, making him the youngest winner in the show’s history and ultimately one of the most successful. Coached by Pharrell Williams, Fredericks broke several records during his appearance on the series, selling over a million downloads of his various singles. A successful four-song EP followed in late 2015, leading up to this debut full-length album, entirely written or co-written by Fredericks.

The debut studio long-player from the winner of season nine of The Voice, A Good Storm is Sawyer Fredericks’ first full-length outing for Republic Records. Like the eponymous EP that preceded it, A Good Storm is anchored by his first single, “Take It All.” In fact, all four tracks from the EP are accounted for, including the duet “Stranger,” which saw the golden-maned singer/songwriter pairing up with fellow Voice contestant and touring partner Mia Z. “4 Pockets,” Fredericks’ second single, appears both in its original form and as a Pharrell Williams mix.
