There is no doubt that we owe the creation of Johannes Brahms’ last piano and chamber music works to his meeting with the Meiningen Court Orchestra’s exceptional clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, who inspired Brahms to new heights of creativity. The complementary sonatas op. 120, with their interwoven motifs, are full in equal measure of exuberant joy, driving passion and moments of picturesque calm. A kaleidoscope of emotions, and a sublime, pioneering gift for his admirers and musical successors. In a subtle musical dialogue, Nicolai Pfeffer and Felix Wahl present a refreshing, high-contrast image of this late work, full of powerful yet lyrical nuance.

Placed between the two monumental sonatas, the piano intermezzos offer the listener a breather for introspection and contemplation.“ (The Artists)

While a whole generation of musicians seems to have adapted to nomadic composition, often between two dates in a plane or in a tour bus, there still are some that like the quality of studio production. Whatever the most-seasoned chamber producers may say, the surroundings are a major factor in the success of a recording (ask Ben Frost or Midori Takada). When other people release maxi CDs every two months, Nils Frahm, German virtuoso of the electric (or sometimes not) piano, took two years to imagine and build his “dream studio”. He put it in a place steeped in history, the Funkhaus Berlin, former headquarters of the East German public broadcasting that was transformed into a studio and concert hall facility. Nils Frahm has thus taken residence in Saal 3 to patiently build a pipe organ that you’ll hear emerging from the first tracks of the disc, like this profession of faith The Whole Universe Wants to Be Touched. With this seventh album which, track after track, makes us dive once again with delight into his oneiric—and almost subaquatic—world, the German pursues his quest for perfection, which he knows to be unreachable. “The music I hear inside me will never end up on a record, as it seems I can only play it for myself. This record includes what I think sticks out and describes my recent musical discoveries in the best possible way I could imagine.” We certainly want him to keep trying…

Georgian soprano Nino Machaidze, with a rich vibrato, emerged as a star with a performance in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at the 2008 Salzburg Festival. For this recital album, the second of a pair designed to propel her to more general notice, she sensibly plays to the strengths in French music she displayed earlier. Machaidze does fine in the obligatory Verdi and Puccini selections, although there’s an edge in her voice that somehow robs O mio babbino caro of its sentiment-laden effect. But the scenes by Bizet, the little-known Ambroise Thomas (whose 14-minute excerpt ought to be heard more often on programs of this kind), and especially Massenet’s Thaïs and Manon that she really shines. As the line in these French opera scenes builds through several registers, Machaidze is given the chance to display the most distinctive quality of her voice: a top at which the vibrato drops out and is replaced by startling knife-like tones of considerable power, perfectly intoned. There’s something uncanny about the shades of this voice, and if Machaidze still has rough edges in both dramatic and lyric capacities, one can easily feel, as the headline of the booklet essay promises, that one is looking into the future. The line refers merely to the fact that Machaidze here has selected works that she has not yet performed on stage, but she’s promising in terms of the more general meaning as well. Conductor Daniele Gatti and the Orchestre National de France provide entirely idiomatic support, but it’s a little hard to understand what Sony was trying to do with the sound: it’s hollow and indistinct, resembling what one might hear in an opera house without terribly good acoustics.

More active than ever, Henri Texier plays around with revisiting the past. With Sand Woman, the double bass player mostly sifts through his recordings from the 70s, his JMS Records era. With a quintet as inspired as ever, composed of guitarist Manu Codjia (impressive in his improvisations), drummer Gauthier Garrigue, saxophonists Vincent Lê Quang and his son Sébastien, he revisits his old themes like Amir and Les là-bas. Also on the menu of this celebration of exploration and bifurcation, there are more recent compositions. But the result is still very consistent, as Texier remains a leader who always ensures that his accomplices express themselves. At last, Sand Woman will also remind you that the man is a great composer (Hungry Man) as well as a great sound producer (the ten-minute long Indians).

Jacques Brel recorded this live album, released posthumously, at a celebrated show at the Knokke Casino in Flanders, Belgium in July 1963. Perhaps best known as the concert where Brel introduced the classic Mathilde, which wouldn’t appear on a studio album for another three years, the historic performance features many of Brel’s best known songs from the first half of his career. This edition includes a 42 minute interview with Brel, conducted in 1971.

JD McPherson presents what he calls “A truly romantic garage rock record”. Undivided Heart & Soul produced by Dan Molad (Lucius) & McPherson, and developed largely in the studio (that studio being the historic RCA Studio B in Nashville), carries a sense of immediacy and irreverence. “In writing this record, I threw several handfuls of caution to the wind. Lyrically, I was allowing myself to be exposed in a way I never have before. Concurrently, maybe as some sort of a self defense mechanism, the guitars got fuzzier and louder. The first day at RCA was like being in church… by the second day, it was a high school band’s rehearsal space.”

Putting the hands of Dan Molad on the wheel of the record ensured that the music didn’t take too many expected turns. “Having toured with Lucius and befriended Dan, I knew he was the guy to push my buttons and challenge me to try new things. He’s a tireless worker. He’s constantly tinkering away on something… and music just falls out of him.” The vintage recording equipment and instruments still housed in RCA Studio B greatly informed the direction of the record. “Each night, at the end of tracking, someone would invariably say, “You wanna put vibes on this?”, speaking of the old RCA Vibraphone. I mean, you can hear THAT vibraphone on Roy Orbison’s “Crying”… we couldn’t keep our hands off of it. It guided some of the songs into some strange and wonderful places. “Lucky Penny” took such a cool turn once Ray (Jacildo, keys) added some to it. We wrote several songs on the piano that Floyd Cramer played “Last Date” on. We were soaking up so much of the phantom energy in that room, it led to some incredible sonic territory.” “Most folks know us for our take on vintage R&B and early Rock N’ Roll. The past year, I’ve been digging so much into the heavier, brasher sounds of early Rock N’ Roll… from bands like The Sonics, Link Wray, and into some early British Rock such as The Creation… these influences feature heavily in these songs. “The tunes that showed up weren’t exactly always in familiar territory, and… we greeted them as welcome strangers. They have a lot of heart… and that’s what Rock N’ Roll should always have.”

Produced and recorded by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica), Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards, is Joe’s 14th studio album. Once again, Joe is joined by his long-term drummer Jeff Campitelli, alongside newcomers Mike Keneally (keyboards – Frank Zappa, Steve Vai) and Allen Whitman (bass guitar – Mermen). On the eleven tracks that make up Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards, Satriani‟s classic sound is accompanied by a surprisingly rich new texture. The first single “Light Years Away” provides a great introduction to the album, alongside several other high energy offerings, like the anthemic “Pyrrhic Victoria”, “Wormhole Wizards” and “Premonition”.

Apparently his time in Chickenfoot made Joe Satriani want to get back to where he once belonged, so he goes retro on 2010’s Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards. About as far away from the heavy-footed party rock of Chickenfoot as possible, Black Swans is pure guitar prog, filled with compressed boogies, sci-fi synths, exotic flourishes, and all of Satch’s phasers and flangers in full-tilt overdrive. Often, it feels like a throwback to the glory days of Surfing with the Alien, but there are crucial differences and they’re not subtle, either. First off, Satriani’s rock doesn’t rock so hard — when the tempo is a little faster or when a song is built on riffs, not melody, it’s for a change in color, so nothing on Black Swans plays aggressively. Furthermore, the album lingers instead of pushes, Satriani setting the tone with long legato melodies and solos with plenty of pauses. As such, it’s not a record that will tear your head off but rather a record to appreciate for its contours and textures, a mature work from one of the great rock guitarists. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

„Super Colossal“ is the 12th studio album from guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani. The master shredder still traffics in arena-sized hard rock instrumentals that provide plenty of room for his melodic, technically dazzling solos. But Satch mixes things up, too, with sunny, country-tinged riffs (‘It’s So Good’), atmospheric jams (‘Ten Words’), and bittersweet love songs (‘Made of Tears’).

While a record of guitar rock instrumentals might seem in imminent danger of growing stale, Satriani manages to keep things interesting, not only by varying his stylistic approach but by utilizing a wide vocabulary of guitar sounds and effects. And, naturally, guitar players and aficionados of six-string wizardry will find plenty to admire on nearly every track here.

The most frightening thing about “Super Colossal” is that it starts off sounding horrifically similar to the chorus of Billy Squier’s “The Stroke.” Thankfully, this is remedied immediately, and Satch returns to familiar territory. The sound of the title track is big and booming, but the tone and delivery are instantly recognizable. Satriani doesn’t pull any new tricks out of his bag, but lets his fingers do the talking throughout most of the record. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Satriani record without a few midtempo numbers thrown in for good measure, and “It’s So Good” certainly delivers a swaggering punch that is reminiscent of not only Flying in a Blue Dream but moments of protégé Steve Vai’s epic album Passion and Warfare. There are moments of delicate frailty and instrumentals with a romantic and optimistic feeling, tempering the high-energy blues-driven guitar shredders and leaving Super Colossal with a nice sense of balance — except for the album’s finish. “Crowd Chant” is arguably one of the weirdest moments in a career full of eccentricity, but it’s painfully out of place. However, with its catchy melody and call-and-response verses, it’s going to make one heck of a concert singalong. On the whole, Satriani really doesn’t push boundaries or stretch his guitar vocabulary too much here, but even on his worst day his productions could best any other shredder du jour based simply on the fact that he crafts songs rather than insipid guitar-scale exercises to flaunt and flail around carelessly. ~ Rob Theakston

John Mayer – Paradise Valley (2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 39:59 minutes | 840 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Columbia

Paradise Valley is the sixth studio album by musician John Mayer. Musically, it is similar to his previous album, Born and Raised, which was released in 2012. However, this album features more musical breaks and instrumentals consisting of electric guitars rather than harmonica. It was released on August 20, 2013. The album’s title is an eponym of Mayer’s home along the Yellowstone River in Montana’s Paradise Valley, where he has lived since 2012.

John Mayer’s 2013 album, the Americana-tinged Paradise Valley, is an introspective if somewhat more upbeat affair than his similarly country-inflected 2012 release, Born and Raised. With that album, Mayer was coming off a rough career patch that found him issuing a mea culpa for an infamously loose-lipped 2010 Rolling Stone interview. Making matters worse, in 2011 the singer/songwriter announced he would be going on extended hiatus from performing while he received treatment for granulomas found near his vocal cords. Subsequently, with Born and Raised, Mayer moved away from the commercial pop of 2010’s Battle Studies and toward an intimate, largely acoustic, ’70s Laurel Canyon-inspired sound with songs that featured plenty of apologetic soul-searching. Named after the Montana river valley where Mayer owns a cabin and spends much of his time when not touring, Paradise Valley continues in this more intimate country-folk style and often feels less like a stand-alone album and more like a companion piece to Born and Raised. Which isn’t to say it’s a lesser work. On the contrary, Paradise Valley actually hangs together better than Born and Raised, with songs that achieve a balance between Mayer’s electric Eric Clapton influence and his softer James Taylor-inspired side. Although his self-imposed period of supplication seems to have ended, Mayer still has plenty of troubles on his mind. Whether comparing his life on the road to the life of an old girlfriend he webstalks online, as he does on “Dear Marie,” or struggling with his wanderlust and inability to call one place home, as he does on “Badge and Gun,” Mayer is clearly still struggling with some of life’s bigger issues. As he sings to his old girlfriend on “Dear Marie,” “Yeah I got that dream, but you got yourself a family.” It’s this knack for turning his personal worries into universally relatable ones that helps Mayer avoid coming off as too self-absorbed and entitled. It is also this ability that helps him finesse “Paper Doll” from simply being a nasty swipe at rumored onetime paramour Taylor Swift (Swift purportedly wrote the song “Dear John” after being dumped by Mayer) into a superbly crafted and gorgeous song about romancing someone more emotionally vulnerable than yourself. Elsewhere, Mayer delivers a soulful rendition of J.J. Cale’s “Call Me the Breeze” — the most straightforward blues cut on the album — and delves into two synergistic duets, the first with on-and-off girlfriend Katy Perry on “Who You Love” and the second with R&B auteur Frank Ocean on “Wildfire.” That Mayer fails to cite country legend Ernest Tubb as the inspiration for “You’re No One ‘Til Someone Lets You Down,” which basically cribs the melody from Tubb’s “Walking the Floor Over You,” might seem more of an oversight if he hadn’t made it so obvious from the start that he was clearly drawing from the deep well of country music’s past on Paradise Valley. Ultimately, whether it’s Tubb’s honky tonk twang, or the twang of Mayer’s own heart, the sound of Paradise Valley rings true. ~ Matt Collar

Over the years Johnny Mathis has recorded a number of Christmas albums and this is a very good example the best of them. Recorded in Hollywood in 1986,a good 27 years after recording his first festive album in New York City with Percy Faith, this album does not contain any traditional Christmas carols but rather an excellent selection of modern pop oriented Christmas songs. This is a lovely album with an excellent choice of songs and the talents of such great arrangers as Henry Mancini,Jeremy Lubbock and Ray Ellis are used here to great effect. All the orchestrations are gorgeous and well balanced and the sound is wonderful.

To add a new dimension there is also a superb choir singing backing vocals along with the splendid orchestra on a number of tracks and Johnny interprets each song in his own inimitable style making this a superb album for the perfect Christmas chillout.

Great voice from a master and I enjoy most of the song selections (although not all). There’s something about a live performance that outshines a studio track that is usually overproduced, etc. Live concerts sort of show if an entertainer can pull it off live or not. He’s a legend for a reason and it shows with this live recording.

Johnny Mathis chooses an interesting, varied set list for this 1984 concert collection. Of course, there are a few of his big ’50s hits — “Misty,” “A Certain Smile,” “The Twelfth of Never,” “Chances Are” — as well as a few songs covered on recent albums — “99 Miles from L.A.” from 1975’s Feelings, “When a Child Is Born” from 1976’s I Only Have Eyes for You, “Begin the Beguine” from 1979’s The Best Days of My Life (and an adult contemporary chart entry), and “Memory” from 1982’s Friends in Love. Then there are more unusual choices, notably the set-opening cover of Kenny Loggins’ first solo hit, “I Believe in Love,” from the soundtrack to the 1976 film A Star Is Born, which gets things off the ground with a Latin beat; a cover of Peter Allen’s sole pop hit, “Fly Away,” from 1981; and a nod to Mathis’ predecessor, Nat King Cole, with a revival of Cole’s 1950 onomatopoeic hit “Orange Colored Sky.” Mathis has always been an expert at finding and performing music that ties together the often disparate styles of popular music over four decades, and his choices here are characteristic. Of course, he also performs them winningly with effective backup. All one could hope for would be more of an acknowledgment of the live context beyond the applause; Mathis speaks to his fans only once, briefly. ~ William Ruhlmann

Modern jazz fans have a right to feel possessive about the singer José James. In the last decade, he’s been one of the suavest vocal improvisers on the scene. His 2015 album devoted to songs made popular by Billie Holiday, Yesterday I Had the Blues, sounded to me like the most soulful tribute to come out during Lady Day’s centennial. Steeped as he is in jazz, James has also shown a restlessness with strict genre categorization. He’s described his love of funk, R&B and hip-hop in interviews. And when Blue Note announced his new album, the label’s press release bore a striking quote from the artist: “I could make jazz albums the rest of my life, but I want to reach people, man. I like Jamie xx as much as I like Miles Davis, you know?”

You could practically hear the well-drilled corps of Jazz Defenders grinding their teeth in response. But on this new record, James doesn’t discard his old skill set. He’s merely doing his part to underline the music’s flexibility in relation to new pop trends much as Louis Armstrong and Davis himself did in decades past.

As he went into making his fourth Blue Note release, José James envisioned the follow-up to the Billie Holiday tribute Yesterday I Had the Blues as a double album. It was going to be split between love songs and outward-looking material inspired by persistent injustices and increasingly visible and frequent attacks upon persons of color in the U.S. At some point, James scrapped the second half of the concept, too distressed to see it through. In the liner notes for Love in a Time of Madness, he briefly addresses — in pained but optimistic language — the condition of his native country and the planet at large. James ends by asking, “What is the value of human life? And of what value is love?” Throughout, he and his collaborators approach answers to the second question by writing from various states of a one-on-one relationship. Seduction, euphoria, salvation, devotion, and distrust are among the moods in the mix. Due to the frequent presence of producer Antario “Tario” Holmes, the primary mode is commercial and contemporary R&B — booming bass, burbling electronic FX, and other tricks of trap-style production, most prominently those snaking synthetic snares dragged as rapidly as flicked comb teeth. With rare exception, that approach to slow jams is for the sake of vocalists with a small fraction of the skill and life experience possessed by James. In these settings, his silken baritone is restricted, though the likes of the aching “Last Night,” suitably closer to Miguel than to Bryson Tiller, and the candy-coated “Always There” (impossible to mistake for Ronnie Laws), are richer than the majority of mainstream radio playlist entries. Three collaborations with Mali Music are comparatively organic and traditionalist, dispersed across the album. Additionally, a throwback-to-throwback sequence of disco-funk numbers, also produced by Tario, provides an untroubled break in the middle. A sparse duet with Oleta Adams comes across like a bonus track transplanted from a different project, but it lets the listener out in a state of romantic contentment, the finishing touch on a uniquely bittersweet addition to the box of chocolates that is James’ discography. ~ Andy Kellman

In this 1971 album-gone-gold, Kristofferson makes the much anticipated transition from successful songwriter to top recording artist. Jody and the Kid; Billy Dee; Good Christian Soldier, and more. By the time Monument came to release Kristofferson’s second album, The Silver Tongued Devil and I, in July 1971, he was the author of four songs that had topped the country or pop charts for others. Kristofferson himself had not yet reached the charts with a recording of his own, but his spectacular success as a songwriter made The Silver Tongued Devil and I a much-anticipated record. One consequence of this was that Monument was willing to spend more money; three of the album’s songs boasted strings and another a horn section. But the key, of course, was still the songwriting, and though there were several excellent songs, the album could not live up to its predecessor, which was the culmination of years of writing. Typically for a second album, Kristofferson reached back into his catalog, presenting his own treatments of ‘Jody and the Kid’ and ‘The Taker,’ which had been hits for Roy Drusky and Waylon Jennings, respectively. In his newly written material, Kristofferson continued to examine the lives of society’s outcasts, but the antiestablishment tone of some of Kristofferson was gone along with much of the wry humor, and in their place were touches of morbidity and sentimentality. Kristofferson retained his gift for intimate love songs, and the album’s most memorable selections turned out to be ‘Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I’ll Ever Do Again)’ (which became a semi-standard) and ‘When I Loved Her.’ And even if his observations seemed less acute, his talent for wordplay often rescued the songs from banality. On its way to becoming a gold record, The Silver Tongued Devil and I reached the pop Top 20, Kristofferson’s career high on that chart, and the country Top Five; thus, Kristofferson made the transition from being a successful songwriter to a successful recording artist.

1987 marks the debut of this multi-platinum smash from Harrisburg, Pennsylvanias hard rock sons Poison. Fronted by the driving lead vocals of Bret Michaels, the multi-talented Bobby Dahl on bass, the power drums of Rikki Rockett and the guitar chops of C.C. DeVille, Look What The Cat Dragged In proved to be worth its weight in gold and platinum sales.

Featuring three mega hits with ‘I Want Action,’ ‘Talk Dirty To Me’ and the power ballad ‘I Wont Forget You,’ this album is known as one of the first hard rock/metal albums to bridge the old school with the new and is still considered one of the strongest hard rock debuts ever.

Poison’s debut album took its cues from the big, anthemic pop hooks of Def Leppard and the rebellious street-tough posturing of Mötley Crüe, as well as a raunchy, adolescent obsession with sex. But Poison really carved out their niche as the ultimate glam metal band, using tight-assed boogie and over-the-top visual extravagance – costumes, makeup, teased hair, and so on – to an even greater extent than most of their contemporaries. It was derivative and formulaic, to be sure, but Poison wholeheartedly embraced that formula from the beginning with a conviction often missing in their peers, and it’s that ridiculous, good-time excess that keeps Look What the Cat Dragged In’s catchiest songs, especially the party anthems ‘Talk Dirty to Me’ and ‘I Want Action,’ just as much fun today, if not more so.

With Someone Out There, Rae Morris doesn’t quite overcome the burdensome influences of Björk and Kate Bush, but she manages to express her singularity more than on Unguarded, her first album released in 2015. This time, the pop sprinkled with electro of the British musician, originally from Blackpool, holds much more lyrical potential. While the sound design is completely in tunes with the times, her songs’ DNA still holds a form of classicism. And when comes the time to unleash the implacable melody of a golden hit song such as Wait For The Rain, Morris’ talent truly shines through.
