Album after album, Raphaël Imbert is writing a long and peerless musical novel. With Music Is My Hope, the saxophonist tackles jazz by different routes. Including by way of spirituality, and the spirit of the blues. With different voices hailing from far-flung places, Imbert is building bridges between the genres, the better to underline the deep cross-pollination that exists within the south of the USA. This time, Imbert invites Marion Rampal, Aurore Imbert, Manu Barthélémy and Big Ron Hunter to sing reflections and revolts, the holy and the political alike. Above all, this celebration of a history and a heritage never comes off as saccharine. Everything here is alive! Even when Raphaël Imbert and his accomplices cover Joni Mitchell’s The Circle Game or a spiritual as famous as Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel. A straight-shooting offering which even takes in an Occitan rendition of Vaqui lo polit mes de mai… All this lively, highly-symbolic material is magnified by the saxophonist’s grand design, which he worked up with his virtuoso musical wingmen: Pierre-François Blanchard on keyboards, Jean-Luc Di Fraya on drums, Pierre Durand and Thomas Weirich on guitars. There can be some chaotic moments here or there, like in a fight; and other moments have the solemnity of a confession. But however they play it, it is always spirited. Magnificent.

Of the song, Solange’s Saint Heron says, “‘Permission’ captures the fervent tenacity of Ro’s voice, while still captivating listeners with its undemanding sex appeal to create a sound that is easily winsome.” The track has also earned praise from many artists including Snoop Dogg who recently posted on Instagram calling “Permission” “bangin’.”

Born in Stuttgart, Germany to a military father turned preacher, Ro James found himself moving around for most of his childhood. From Indiana, California, Hawaii, Oklahoma to the place he now calls home, New York, music was always in the forefront of James’ life. On her debut American release (she’d done a record in Germany that she now disowns), Rosanne Cash may not have shaken the money tree or the Billboard charts, but she and husband/producer/collaborator Rodney Crowell began to change the face of contemporary country music forever. Recorded in L.A. and not Nash Vegas, Right or Wrong still utilized talent synonymous with Music City, but the sound that took country and merged it with the rock and pop styles of the day was a winning formula. Crowell and Cash made the song selections while Rodney called in Emmylou Harris’s band (of which he was an alumnus) and some up and comers and created a sonic palette that accented the brave new world of stripped-down mixes and songs that came from the left field of country or pop (the European version of the album featured a Lennon/McCartney tune). Here are nods to the past and heritage in her father’s ‘Big River,’ a couple of outlaw tunes from Keith Sykes (the title track and ‘Take Me, Take Me’), as well as the stunning ballad ‘Couldn’t Do Nothing Right’ by Karen Brooks and Gary P. Nunn. Jerry Jeff Walker recorded a hell of a version in the early ’70s, but the crooning sorrow and ache in the grain of Cash’s voice and the faux Caribbean rhythm behind a pedal steel-driven melody line make it an entirely different song. Speaking of voice, Cash is most comfortable singing her own searing ballads such as ‘This Has Happened Before,’ Crowell’s ‘No Memories Hanging’ Round,’ ‘Seeing’s Believing,’ and ‘Anybody’s Darlin.’ But Crowell’s ‘Baby, Start Turnin’ Em Down’ is perhaps the strongest track on the album as it combines a restless country shuffle, a rocker’s minor key blues riff, and a deliberate nod to Marvin Gaye’s ‘Heard It Through the Grapevine’ and Motown. Right or Wrong only got to number 42 on the Billboard chart, but it did make radio take notice that something new was about to happen, and on Seven Year Ache, the follow-up to this fine album, the floodgates opened.

The River & the Thread is the fourteenth studio album by Rosanne Cash, released in 2014 by Blue Note Records. The album received critical acclaim from music critics. The album won 3 Grammy Awards on February 8, 2015. The album swept all the categories that it was nominated for: “Best Americana Album”, “Best American Roots Song” and “Best American Roots Performance” for “A Feather’s Not a Bird.”

Nearly eight years after Rosanne Cash last released a set of original songs, 2014’s The River & the Thread finds her in a reflective mood, and just as 2009’s The List saw her looking back with a set of classic songs recommended by her father, the late country legend Johnny Cash, The River & the Thread is dominated by thoughts and emotions that occurred to her as she was involved in a project to restore Johnny’s boyhood home. This doesn’t mean that Cash has returned to the spunky, country-accented sound of her most popular work — this is still Rosanne Cash the mature and thoughtful singer/songwriter we’ve come to know since the late ’90s, and the tone of this album is unfailingly literate. But though this music isn’t country, it’s certainly Southern, and road trips from Alabama to Tennessee, visits to the Tallahatchie Bridge and Money Street, and vintage gospel music on the radio embroider these songs as Cash immerses herself in the places that were once close to home as if she’s reuniting with long lost family. And two of the songs cut especially close to home — “Etta’s Tune” was written in memory of Marshall Grant, a longtime family friend and member of Johnny Cash’s band, while “When the Master Calls the Roll” is a tale of love torn apart during the Civil War that Cash wrote in collaboration with her former husband Rodney Crowell and current spouse John Leventhal — and they rank with the best material on the album, genuine and heartfelt, and written and performed with a genuine passion that never sinks into sentimental histrionics. Just as Cash’s songs are crafted with a subtle intelligence, her vocals here are superb, getting to the heart of the lyrics without painting herself into a corner, and the production is rich but elegant and to the point. Rosanne Cash hasn’t been especially prolific in the 21st century, and at under 40 minutes, she wasn’t crafting an epic with The River & the Thread. But she’s learned to make every word and every note count, and this album confirms once again that she’s matured into a singular artist with the talent and the vision to make these stories of her travels in the South come to vivid and affecting life. ~ Mark Deming

“Tonight” was originally released in 1984 in Italy, and a year later under license in Germany and Spain. All the 3 releases were pressed on vinyl only. The original recordings were waiting for over 25 years to be released officially on CD. Along this time the “Tonight” album became a legend and number one on most of Italo Fans’ favourite records lists. In fact it is a true Italian synth pop classic which made way for the other artists and ruled the synth disco scene not only in Italy. The whole Europe was enchanted by the cold and sweet electronic sound of Savage, including the UK based Pet Shop Boys, who mention his huge hit “Don’t Cry Tonight” in one of the interviews.

UK rockers Saxon release their 21st album entitled „Battering Ram“. The release sees the band return to their NWOBHM roots and builds on their previous heavier releases in recent years but with more of a classic sound.
With Biff Byford singing as well as he ever has, Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt making full use of the term ‘shredding’ with their guitars and the lock-steady rhythm of Nibbs Carter’s bass and Nigel Glockler’s drums, the future and the past crash together in an ear-scintillatingly engaging, raucous, melodic-yet-classically heavy ten songs collection which will instantly be hailed as a Saxon classic. The title track, with its delectable twin guitar assault heralding the album’s commencement, gives the listener an instant crack around the chops, whilst traditionalists will be delighted to hear such a perfect marriage of old, classic Saxon with the newer, fresher invective in such riff-fronted fare as “Destroyer” and “Stand Your Ground”, but there are still moments of space and exploration which fans will love. “This one’s a natural progression from Sacrifice,” says Byford, “There’s a bit less rock’n’roll and a bit more ‘heavy’ on it. We wanted to keep focused on a style rather than moving around too much.”
Produced by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Testament, Exodus Accept) at his Backstage Recording Studios in rural Derbyshire, Saxon were able to hone in and whittle down any excess, finding the sonic space and balance to let Battering Ram’s riffs and melodies get the necessary space to scream front and center. Saxon have once again established their rightly-venerated credentials as Kings and vanguards of heavy metal music.
‘Some of it is quite brutal, but there’s quite a lot of melodic stuff on there as well. Every SAXON album is different to the one before because we like to entertain people and we don’t really like to write the same song all the time.’ –Biff Byford

Arguably the strongest of the original NWOBHM, barring the exception of Iron Maiden, Saxon has been a beast of many colors since they first emerged in the late 1970s. Part of this can be attributed to their incredible longevity and continual output despite changing trends, though admittedly they ended up embracing a number of them as time droned on. Like with many bands from said movement, a lot of praise is heaped upon their early 80s offerings, as there was a pretty discernible link with the aggressive, riff happy approach of their output at the time and the early speed/thrash metal scene that took off in 1983-84. This was followed by a period of greater hard rock tendencies that culminated in what can be best described as a full out embracing of the hair metal scene by the latter half of the 80s, followed by a period of relative obscurity with the ascendance of grunge, followed by a resurgence that coincided with the power metal revival of the late 1990s, which Saxon signed onto to an extent for much of their subsequent output, though still maintaining a more traditional air when compared to the popularized Helloween worship and symphonic pomp that was big at the time, though they did occasionally incorporate those elements.
This extensive history lesson is necessary to lend a full perspective on what kind of album their 21st LP Battering Ram actually is, which is that of an absolutely captivating and hard-hitting straddle between their early 80s thrash-happy roots and their more pomp-steeped power metal character beginning on Metalhead. Though there were some strong hints at this direction on the last couple of albums, this thing just throws out any notion of restraint and goes right for the throat with a massive, punchy guitar sound that is about heavy enough to pass for Megadeth, yet comprised of a brilliant mixture of a number of NWOBHM trappings that channel many fellow mainstays of the scene from Iron Maiden, Satan, Blitzkrieg and Diamond Head, while also grabbing onto the speeding, Judas Priest infused yet chunkier feel of contemporary German metal maniacs Accept. The rhythm section is thunderous, the lead guitar lines are flashy, Byford’s vocals are strong, sleazy and completely on point (literally showing no sign of age), but the real place where this album just brings home the glory is the meaty guitar riffs, packing enough punch to level an entire building like a sonic wrecking ball.
In direct contrast to the generally mixed bag of outright winners and otherwise passable rockers that rounded out
There is almost too much good stuff on this album to handle, and all of it delivered with such a militaristic consistency that it transcends almost everything that this band has done within their 38 year history, as presumptive as that may sound. They’ve essentially managed to bridge all of the best elements of their past together into one cohesive package while also injecting a modern production that just blows the top clean off the whole thing. It’s arguably the most aggressive thing they’ve ever put out, though also one of the more theatrical and deep efforts when accounting for some of the less overtly metallic elements, particularly the participation of David Bower as a guest narrator as mentioned before, though it should be noted that the band’s lone ballad featuring his voice in “Kingdom Of The Cross” redefines the entire nature of the concept into a nostalgic and somber storybook narrative with a recurring chorus refrain. An analogy could be made to something by Sabaton in that it recalls a horrific battle in a very visual way, but with a slightly more elaborate melodic content and more of an organic flow. Everything on here just falls into place with astounding results, proving both that a band’s golden years need not be limited to before the age of 40, and that it is very possible for old dogs to learn a few new tricks.

Whether or not it stands as a cruel injustice, despite a career spanning more than fifty years, Rick Springfield remains completely unknown in our part of the world. He’s had a few moments under the spotlight, like the one granted by the TV show Glee, which in 2011 made his Jessie’s Girl into a hit, or when Dave Grohl invited him to take part in his documentary Sound City in 2013. But even his numerous appearances on the big screen or on television have remained relatively unnoticed. Some of his performances are worth a watch, like in American Horror Story (season 7) in which he portrays a deranged and dangerous minister. As an explanation, it seems obvious that the musician, as well as the actor, is better suited to an American audience. Ever since the United States offered him a fortune in 1972 to leave his native Australia and excellent band Zoot, betting on his pretty face as much as his musical ability, he has been presented as the Bruce Springsteen for teenagers, and this was cemented by his first few solo successes (Jessie’s Girl, No 1 in 1980, I’ve Done Everything for You, No 8 in 1981, Don’t Talk to Strangers, No 2 in 1982, Affair of the Heart, No 9 in 1983…). Since the end of the 80s, he’s become scarcer and more rock’n’roll, pushing even further this style stripped bare and tinged with blues in this 17th album (The Devil That You Know, Judas Tree, Blues for the Disillusioned…). Furthermore Springfield shows he’s far from helpless on the guitar, particularly on the slide (The Voodoo House, The Snake King, God Don’t Care…). While it looks like a concept album around the theme of religion, this Snake King seems to flow quite naturally. Both varied and balanced (but not calibrate, this time), it will delight both Bon Jovi fans and Springsteen’s.

“This album has been my catharsis since the music started coming to me almost ten years ago. It’s the world seen through my eyes, or rather, through my piano. It’s evolved into a patchwork of emotions, experiences, beliefs – music that put an end to struggle. From On a cloud to Old soul, the pieces here came to life and brought hope when I thought nothing could save me. They each have their place in my development; they became my language. For me, a single chord can evoke a symphony of emotions. With solo piano, everything is exposed and we have to catch what passes through our fingers, which starts as raw emotion and translates as music in its purest form.

I feel that sharing these emotions through music helps us to reconnect; these aren’t fingers double tapping to like or swiping away – these are fingers pulsing across the keys of a piano. The world changes and the music will always be tuned with the world; perhaps that is why I never seem to play a piece exactly the same way I did the last time. My insecurities and weaknesses find their way into my music, but also the landscapes and the people that inspire me. I hope the music on this album can reach the soul of listeners the very same way I feel it when I play”- RIOPY

Rosanne Cash’s catalog on Columbia is nothing if not formidable. Her pioneering meld of country, rock & roll (with an emphasis on “rock”), folk, and even blues, her topical concerns (which went deeper than most songwriters who came before her in taking on the tough topics of life), and her insistence on working outside the Nashville box scored her a number of hits and blazed the trail for many women who came later. King’s Record Shop followed by two years her flirtation with the kind of pop coming out of England in droves, the radically underappreciated Rhythm & Romance. King’s Record Shop — produced by her then-husband and longtime collaborator Rodney Crowell — is a granite-solid collection of covers and originals that delve deeply into the traditions that informed her life and created her as an artist, while revealing the trouble in her marriage to Crowell. The opening track, Eliza Gilkyson’s “Rosie Strike Back,” is a real feminist country anthem, and contains killer backing vocals from Patty Smyth (of Scandal) and Steve Winwood. Her read of John Hiatt’s “The Way We Make a Broken Heart” is the kind of torch and tang ballad that will stand the test of time simply for its gender-bending take on relationships. Her collaboration with Hank DeVito, “If You Change Your Mind,” is a jangly folk-rock ballad that expresses romantic longing in the face of a wayward lover; in its choruses one hears need as well as generosity. “The Real Me,” a song that offers the vulnerability, truth, and flaws of a life in the process of transformation, is a preview of the type of material that would appear on the nakedly revealing Interiors. And it just goes deeper, from her rollicking and rebellious rocker “Somewhere Sometime” to the stellar cover of John Stewart’s heart-wrenching “Runaway Train” to the straight-ahead country of her father Johnny’s “Tennessee Flat Top Box.” With its faux soul R&B chorus, Crowell’s “I Don’t Have to Crawl” is as full of want, cracked-heart honesty, and determination to keep standing as anything in country music. Ultimately, King’s Record Shop is Rosanne Cash’s classic, a work that transcends production and songwriting styles and the pop and country music of the time. ~ Thom Jurek

Validated by Quincy Jones, Sarah Lancman merrily follows in her path with an album recorded alongside Giovanni Mirabassi – one of the most gifted pianists of his generation. With meticulously accurate rhythmics composed by double bass player Gianluca Renzi and drummer Gene Jackson, the Parisian singer once again imposes the sensuality of her pure singing. After Dark in 2014 and Inspiring Love in 2016, she manages once more, without abusing any effect, to magnify the melodies she tackles. It’s also worth noting the guest appearance of the Japanese singer and trumpet player Toku.

It is hard to take much interest in the extraneous considerations which, according to the artist, dictated the content of this album: the familial “homages” to his parents, his sister, his spouse, his children, his niece, all presented with a shedload of photos of the various relations, including “uncle” Nelson (Freire, of course), or “aunty” Martha (Argerich, naturally)… So let’s pass over them. Because it is above all the musical content of the recording which confirms once again that the Argentine pianist is a sort of musical extraterrestrial: his reading of the “Appassionata” Sonata opens a door to a stunning world of sounds, colours, energies, as so few pianists, or no one else at all, can. He can throw up a thousand different sounds, as if playing with several different pianos at once (whereas in fact it was a recording made in public, on one single piano!) proves that it is possible to get a lot more out of this instrument than mere virtuosity or mind-blowing skill: it can become a whole orchestra. One still needs to be able to read the scores… And Tiempo performs an astonishing reading of one of the most jaw-dropping of Brahms’s Intermezzi, and then a superlatively elegant version of one of Brahms’s most elegant waltzes. After a few takes on Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev which take us to an incredible sonic planet, Tiempo heads for a dreamy Debussy where the piano becomes a kind of harp, and reaches a full-throated Chopin with a few Preludes which alternate between the moving and the formidable, but always infinitely poetic. Tiempo finishes up further south, in the Latin America of Villa-Lobos, and then with his countrymen Ginastera and Piazzola. A fantastic track list in the hands of a fantastic pianist, who, to be sure, hasn’t recorded a lot, but whose career is developing and slowly but surely becoming one of the most prestigious in the world.

Stacy Lattisaw’s third set, Sneakin’ Out, produced by Narada Michael Walden and it is a winner. Everything works on this album. The ballads are quite stunning. They include some of her best ; Her cover of HEY THERE LONELY BOY, MEMORIES, DON’T THROW IT ALL AWAY (previously done by Olivia Newton John on one of her ’70s LP) and the touching I COULD LOVE YOU SO DIVINE.

Pop touches can be found on the delicious Motown-inspired TONIGHT (I’M GONNA MAKE YOU MINE) and the pop-ish GUYS LIKE YOU (GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME).

But any Lattisaw album wouldn’t be complete without the banging dance tracks – and I love the ones on this album. SNEAKIN’ OUT is fun and adventurous, ATTACK OF THE NAME GAME (with the great PATRICK COWLEY on synths) is funny and very catchy. It’s a bit on the novelty side, but who cares? I’M DOWN FOR YOU is heavy and funky – it also features a great conga solo by Sheila E.

When she was a teenager in the early ’80s, urban soul singer Stacy Lattisaw had a string of Top 40 R&B hits, with three songs — “Let Me Be Your Angel,” “Love on a Two Way Street,” and “Miracles” — crossing over to the pop mainstream. Lattisaw recorded her first album for Cotillion Records at the age of 12 in 1979, under the direction of producer Van McCoy. However, it wasn’t until she hooked up with Narada Michael Walden, a former drummer with the Mahavishnu Orchestra who was just beginning a career as a producer, that she became a star. Under Walden’s direction, she had five hit albums between 1981 and 1986.

She continued recording into the late ’80s, signing to Motown in 1986, but her audience slowly disappeared. By the early ’90s, she decided to retire from a music career and concentrate on raising her family.

Since it was formed in 2007, the Stradivari Quartet has built up an enviable international reputation for itself both through its concerts and recordings. Throughout all of this it has remained in close contact with its audiences, who often follow the players as a loyal and enthusiastic fan base. The Stradivari Quartet is undoubtedly one of the most interesting ensembles currently before the public. All four members are additionally engaged in other artistic activities. The Quartet gives around forty concerts a year in Switzerland and throughout the world and has appeared at London’s Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art etc. The Stradivari Quartet performs a wide range of music, while concentrating increasingly on major cycles of works by a single composer and generally spread out over an entire season. March 2017 was Schumann’s turn… The composer’s earliest plans to tackle the ne plus ultra of chamber music date back to 1838, when he wrote to Clara: “I’m looking forward to the quartets as the piano is becoming too limiting for me; it’s especially strange that I write almost everything in canon form and that it isn’t until afterwards that I discover the voices that echo the melodic line, often in inversions, retrograde rhythms etc.” Although Schumann completed the String Quartets Op. 41 in a matter of barely two months in 1842, they had been preceded by a lengthy gestational process. He gained access to the medium by studying the classics: Beethoven and Mendelssohn, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert. It is remarkable, though, that he never tackled the string quartet again after 1842.

With The Good Life, released in 2016 and for which he took a dip in the Great American Songbook, Till Brönner was at his zenith. The German trumpet player and singer penned an album of smooth classics, leaning toward love songs, which he revisited with elegance and sophistication. With Nightfall, Brönner joins forces with his old accomplice, double bass player Dieter Ilg, to revisit once again the music of great authors. Except that this time, the program couldn’t be more eclectic: from the Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby to Leonard Cohen’s A Thousand Kisses Deep, to Johann Sebastian Bach, Ornette Coleman and Jerome Kern, the duo has tackled a large repertoire. But the virtuosity shared by the two musicians allows them to make the whole project homogeneous. They most of all find a very sensual language. Each note is weighted and the silences and spaces are never forgotten. In short, this Nightfall is the incarnation of elegance.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz  | Time – 01:03:40 minutes | 755 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Mascot Records

Following a year that saw both a collaborative album with mandolinist David Grisman and a live album from the Ryman Auditorium, Australian acoustic guitar hero Tommy Emmanuel returns to his Music City muse with Accomplice One, a duets album with a strong Nashvillian flavor. Coming in at a rather lengthy 16 tracks, one gets the feeling that many of these sessions yielded more fruit than could fit on one disc, leaving the door open for future explorations and inspired pairings. Emmanuel’s sparring partners here range from similarly virtuosic instrumentalists like nimble blues-rock guitarist J.D. Simo and ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro to country singer/songwriters like Suzy Bogguss and Rodney Crowell. Warmly captured in various studios in and around Nashville, Accomplice One offers a fairly wide swath of what Emmanuel and his friends have to offer, from the tasteful-but-sprightly Celtic airs and reels of the Clive Carroll collaboration “Keepin’ It Real” to a surprisingly tender take on Madonna’s “Borderline” with singer Amanda Shires. A mostly acoustic rootsy feel ties the whole affair together as Emmanuel offers himself up as co-vocalist to Mark Knopfler on the backporch blues of “You Don’t Want to Get You One of Those” and to Jason Isbell on Doc Watson’s “Deep River Blues.” As relaxed and affable as these vocal duets are, it’s still the fireworks that get the biggest response and Emmanuel is smart enough to toss a pair of red-hot instrumentals near the front in the J.D. Simo and Charlie Cushman standout “Wheelin’ and Dealin'” and the David Grisman and Bryan Sutton bluegrass blazer “C-jam Blues.”
