Initially released in 1971 “Look at Yourself” is the third album by British rock band Uriah Heep. Fast forward 46 years it still remains a timeless classic. Painstakingly remastered by Andy Pearce this 2CD set also includes previously unreleased alternative mixes that reignite and rejuvenate iconic tracks such as ‘July Morning’ & title track ‘Look At Yourself’.

The third time proved to be the charm for Uriah Heep: on Look at Yourself, the group perfects its fusion of heavy metal power and prog rock majesty, and the result is one of the best albums in the Heep catalog. The gauntlet is thrown down on the title track, a powerful rocker that layers its relentless hard rock attack with ornate vocal harmonies and quicksilver organ runs before climaxing with a tribal-sounding drum jam. The remainder of Look at Yourself presents an effective blend of gutsy guitar rock and organ-fueled prog excursions. In the rock arena, the gems are “Tears in My Eyes,” a powerful rocker driven by an almost rockabilly-style riff that stops midway for a surprising vocal harmony break supported by smooth wah-wah guitar, and “Love Machine,” a short, punchy slice of hard rock built on an infectious, stomping rhythm. However, the best track on the album is one of the more prog-oriented ones: “July Morning” starts with a pastoral organ riff, then builds into a heavy yet symphonic rock tune that divides its time between gentle acoustic verses and emotional, organ-fueled choruses before climaxing in a monstrous jam dominated by a swirling Moog synthesizer lead. Special note should also be taken of David Byron’s vocal performance; his multi-octave, operatic style was no doubt an influence on later metal vocalists like Rob Halford. All in all, Look at Yourself is both one of Uriah Heep’s finest, most cohesive albums and a high point of 1970s heavy metal. ~~ AllMusic Review by Donald A. Guarisco

From 700 to1797, the Serenissima independence had a long life from its blurry beginnings up until the Treaty of Campoformio in 1797 which bound together the Republic of Venice to Italy. This millenium is musically illustrated by Jordi Savall on his latest work. He has surrounded himself by his own troops: the Hespèrion XXI, the Capella Reial de Catalunya, the Concert des Nations, as well as numerous “guest stars” from all over the Mediterranean. The history of Venice is known to alternate between times of economic, political and military prosperity, as it found itself under threat by hostile armies from the Ottoman Empire, France, Spain and the House of Austria. We hear an Orthodox vocal ensemble from Thessaloniki, the Jewish cantor Lior Elmaleh, Orient Musicians for all the Arabic, Moorish and Ottoman influences, and Haïg Sarikouyoundjian for Armenia in this extraordinary compilation. The works range from Byzantine songs to a fairly quirky adaptation of Beethoven signed by Luigi Bordese – a four-part male choir and organ with a text by Adolphe Joly. Not forgetting Mozart’sTurkish March which is deliciously rewritten by Savall, or even the classical Ottoman musicians Monteverdi and Vivaldi, as well as Rosenmüller (who worked for a long time in Venice, after having to flee Leipzig from a grim story involving young boys… less of a scandal in Venice it seemed…), Janequin illustrating Marignan, Dufay and his Fall of Constantinople, the Crusades and the songs that followed, in short, everything that you could imagine. A sumptuous document explaining the ins and outs of the whole matter.

In 1512, Giovanni di Lorenzo di Piero de’ Medici (1475-1521) was the eldest surviving male member of the senior line of the celebrated Medici family of Florence, the eldest surviving son of the mythic Lorenzo “il Magnifico.” Giovanni had inherited his family’s refined interest in and zealous support of the arts: literature; painting, sculpture, and architecture; and music. But of all of these, Giovanni – perhaps due in part to his poor eyesight – favored music, for which his passion was legendary among contemporaries. The musical life of Leo’s court was unimaginably rich and vibrant, as innumerable eyewitness accounts confirm.

Our CD aims to bring that world acoustically to life, to revive the soundscape of the Leonine court and illustrate the range of practices typifying Leo’s own musical experiences. It is intended as a tribute to a rare and extraordinary patron of music (himself a composer and musician), who occupied that singular position at the very summit of the universal ecclesiastical hierarchy.

Franz Liszt forms not only the centre point of Lea & Eather Birringer’s recital, he also is the central figure that draws together Grieg– of whom he was very supportive, and Cesar Franck, whose development of germinal motifs to create large scale complex movements was a direct influence of the Hungarian master.

Lea Birringer’s international career began at the age of 14 with her solo debut at the Berliner Philharmonie. Since then, she has been invited to international festivals, like the Salzburg Festival, MDR Musiksommer, Davos Festival, Crescendo Winter Music Festival in Florida, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the festival LuganoMusica. Lea Birringer is a prize winner at the international violin competitions Kloster Schöntal, Premio Rodolfo Lipizer, Louis Spohr and Abram Yampolski. In 2008 she was awarded the top prize at the international Johannes Brahms competition. In addition, she has been a long-time scholarship holder of the German Music Foundation.

An enthusiastic chamber musician, Lea Birringer collaborated with artists like Pavel Vernikov, Paul Rivinius, Atar Arad, Barbara Bonney, Eszter Haffner, Wen-Sinn Yang and Igor Levit, and performs with her sister Esther as the Duo Birringer.

‘Gentle piano poet’, ‘Powerful bundle of energy’, ‘Congenial interpreter’, this is how the press has praised the young German pianist Esther Birringer. Her confident appearance, her sensitive as well as dramatic way of playing has delighted the critics and the audience equally. Her repertoire comprises 30 piano concertos as well as numerous of chamber works. Esther started playing the piano at the age of three. Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, Pascal Devoyon, Cécile Ousset and Arie Vardi are among her teachers.

On the eve of his centenary in 2018, Sony Classical releases the most important collection, Leonard Bernstein’s classic American Columbia recordings, remastered from their original 2- and multi-track analogue tapes. This has allowed for the creation of a natural balance (for example, between the orchestra and solo instruments) that brings the quality of these half-century-old recordings, excellent for their time, up to the standards of today’s audiophiles. In addition, there has been a meticulous restoration of some earlier masterings in which LP surface noise was too rigorously eliminated at the expense of the original brilliance.

In addition to Prokofiev’s two violin concertos – whose ample discography is brilliantly enriched by this interpretation of Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili and the excellent conductor Yannick Nézet-Seguin –, the album also features three treats from Prokofiev arranged by Tamás Batiashvili, the father of the aforementioned Lisa and a renowned teacher in his country. These are rewritings for solo violin and orchestra of the Dance Of The Knights from Romeo and Juliet, the Grand Waltz from Cinderella and the nefarious and quirky Grand March from The Love For Three Oranges. Batiashvili – the father – streamlines the message, allowing the solo violin to showcase its full power in moments that were bloated in the original partition, particularly in the rather bulky Dance Of The Knights which, losing some of its imposing weight, gained lyricism in return. As for the two concertos, they benefit greatly from the reasonably sized Chamber Orchestra of Europe, as it perfectly lets Prokofiev’s writing shine through.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 46:19 minutes | 946 MB | Genre: Blues Rock
Studio Master, Official Digital Download  | Booklet, Front Cover | © Dixiefrog

After enacting his own role in the Aki Kaurismäki movie Le Havre, Little Bob is back with a blues project that takes him back to his beginnings.

“I’ve always loved blues as much as rock’n’roll. The first LP I bought (alongside a record by the Animals) was a Howlin’ Wolf album. His vocals literally blew me away and I was hooked on the blues for life. To this day, I feel thankful to all of these great pioneers for their inspiration and feeling.”

Break Down the Walls is a collection of blues classics revisited by Little Bob, interspersed with personal songs written in a similar vein. The result sounds like a wild British Blues album from the sixties, with a handful of heart-wrenching ballads that hint at Roberto’s Italian roots.

Little Bob has been a rock ‘n’ roll legend in France for the past thirty years. His city of origin, Le Havre, located on the Channel a stone’s throw from England, is the French equivalent of Liverpool with its oil terminals, supertankers, container ships, chemical plants, sailors and roustabouts. Bob crisscrossed the British Isles abundantly in the eighties at the head of his Little Bob Story, performing no-holds-barred rock on university campuses and festivals grounds, Irish pubs and Hell’s Angels hangouts.

The greatest have always considered Bob one of their own. He has recorded with Steve Hunter (Mytch Ryder, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper …), Charlie Sexton (the Texas Boy Wonder), Kenny Margolis (of Mink Deville and Cracker), Dave Alvin (The Blasters) and performed with Maria McKee & Benment Tench in Hollywood, Dr Feelgood, Beverly Joe Scott & Southside Johnny in Paris, and Willy DeVille & Johnny Thunder in England.

As Composer in Residence from 201014, Julian Anderson has a close affinity with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and this album is a celebration of his time at the LPO. This is Julian’s second release on the LPO label, featuring premiere recordings of Alleluia and In lieblicher Bläue. Two of the three pieces on this album were composed specially for these musicians: Alleluia for the London Philharmonic Choir, the LPO and Vladimir Jurowski to perform at the re-opening concert of the Royal Festival Hall in June 2007, and In lieblicher Bläue for Carolin Widmann, one of the leading violinists of her generation. This recording of In lieblicher Bläue is taken from its world premiere performance at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on 14 March 2015. The recordings of Alleluia and The Stations of the Sun are also taken from live concert recordings at the Royal Festival Hall in March 2014 and December 2013 respectively.

„Julian Anderson spent four fruitful years as resident composer with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This, the second disc of his work on the LPO label, includes persuasive recent performances under Vladimir Jurowski of Alleluia, the substantial choral work Anderson wrote for the 2007 reopening of the Royal Festival Hall, and The Stations of the Sun (1998). But the highlight is In Lieblicher Bläue, captured at its premiere last year, a violin concerto in all but name. Inspired by Hölderlin’s poetic image of a steeple against a bright blue sky, Anderson uses a brilliant orchestral palette to create sonorities that dazzle, suggesting intense colour and almost blinding sunlight. Above and through all this, Carolin Widmann’s violin soars serenely. On a recording we lose some of the theatre Widmann had to walk on to the platform playing, then swap her bow for a pencil, then play with her back to the audience but the piece is equally strong without it.“(Guardian)

After his first solo album of music by Marchand and Clérambault, released in 2015 and nominated for a Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the harpsichordist Luca Oberti, who has performed on the international scene for years alongside such figures as Marc Minkowski and Christophe Rousset, presents a new album on the theme of Bach’s imaginary journey to Italy. Schütz, Froberger, Muffat, Handel, Hasse, Mozart and Wagner are merely the most famous of the many musicians who crossed the Alps to immerse themselves in the world of Italian music and grasp its atmospheres and its secrets. Yet the composer who most fully assimilated the Italian style was Johann Sebastian Bach, who never even set foot in Italy. His journey was a virtual one: the scores of the Italian masters, which he avidly studied and absorbed from childhood onwards, guided him on an ideal itinerary from Vivaldi’s Venice to Frescobaldi’s Rome. Beginning with the transcriptions of concertos by Vivaldi and Marcello, and continuing with pieces of Italian inspiration like the Aria Variata alla maniera italiana, the Capriccio sulla lontananza del fratello dilettissimo and the Fantasia and Fugue BWV 904, the journey culminates in the celebrated Italian Concerto.

She might be the daughter of painter and video maker Kiki Picasso and the sister of filmmaker Kim Chapiron, she might have assisted M83, Jabberwocky, La Caution, Spleen, Oxmo Puccino, Casseurs Flowter and also Birdy Nam Nam, and done a lot of other things, it’s high time we judged Mai Lan for her own accomplishments and let go of all those considerations. It’s a rather easy thing to do thanks to the second album of the elusive singer. Elusive like the original style of this Autopilote which, even if it has an overtly pop aspect, doesn’t hesitate to delve into electro, rock, hip hop and R&B. It’s a tartan that is in the end in line with its time, pushing away all labels, formatting and prejudice. Mai Lan has above all the intelligence to strip down the structure of all her songs and never overdo it. It’s in this firm esthetic stance, which sometimes reminds us of M.I.A., that she distances herself from her competitors and gives birth to a very personal disc.

He may not have recorded for Philadelphia International, but Major Harris still made some classic Philly soul in the mid-1970s. He had been a member of the Delfonics before going solo, and in 1975 he had his big moment in the spotlight when he scored a hit with ‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait.’ While that song is undoubtedly the centerpiece of MY WAY, it’s surrounded by plenty of other slices of lush R&B rendered in the classic Philly style.

Recorded live in September 1953 at the Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach, California but not released until 1985, this album captures Miles Davis jamming with the club’s house band, the Lighthouse All Stars. Chet Baker, on the bill at the Lighthouse that night, plays trumpet on two of these songs (though not with Davis); the two trumpeters are variously joined on these tunes by Rolf Ericson, Bob Cooper, Bud Shank, Lorraine Geller, Russ Freeman, Howard Rumsey and Max Roach.

“I sometimes jammed with some of the musicians of the Lighthouse and we made a record. At that time, Chet Baker (was known as one of) the best young jazz trumpeters. He was California. He played at the Lighthouse one day I went to jam. Chet was a pretty nice guy, cool and good instrumentalist. But he knew as well as I that he had much copied me. At the meeting, he told me afterwards that knowing I was in the room had made him nervous.”

Studio Master, Official Digital Download  | Booklet, Front Cover | © ECM New Series

Born in Osaka, educated at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, Momo Kodama is well-placed to approach music from both Eastern and Western vantage points, as she does in this album which interweaves etudes of Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and Toshio Hosokawa (born 1955).

Both composers have similarly been border-crossers. Debussy, pointing to music of the future, looked to the Orient for inspiration. Hosokawa has combined aspects of Japanese and European tradition in his contemporary compositions. Momo Kodama: “In the music of Toshio Hosokawa I find elements close to Debussy: the freedom of form and tone colour, the sense of poetic design, with a wide range of lyricism and dynamics, between meditation and virtuoso development, between light and shade, between large gestures and minimalist refinement.”

„Point and Line“ is the pianist’s second ECM album and follows the widely-praised ‘La vallée des cloches’, with music of Ravel, Takemitsu and Messiaen, of which American Record Guide noted: “Kodama’s impeccable technique and facility for crystalline sounds makes for a mesmerizing program.”

Neil came up with a stocking full of unique arrangements of holiday perennials for this 1994 album. See what he does with The Hallelujah Chorus; Sleigh Ride; Away in a Manger; Winter Wonderland; The First Noel; Joy to the World , and more!

Neil Diamond’s first Christmas album, released in 1992, was a million-seller, but even so, it seemed a little bit soon to be releasing another one only two years later. Not that it much matters which Christmas season you release a Christmas album in. Working again with producer Peter Asher, Diamond addresses 15 seasonal songs that hadn’t made it onto the first album, sometimes coming up with unusual arrangements, such as a barbershop quartet version of a medley of “Deck the Halls” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” and a reggae version of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” complete with exhortations to children everywhere. But, especially toward the end of the album, Diamond tales a more traditional approach, singing some of the more religious Christmas songs with an orchestra and chorus.

Tracklist:
01. Joy To The World
02. Mary’s Little Boy Child
03. Deck The Halls / We Wish You A Merry Christmas

On this lazy, nearly shameless album (two CDs that don’t even make it to 70 minutes combined), Neil Diamond visits movie songs past (“As Time Goes By”) and present (“My Heart Will Go On”) with stops along the way for takes on almost anything you would anticipate an album and artist like this would cover (“Unchained Melody”? There. “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”? Ditto. “Moon River”? Yep, it’s there.) Assisted by conductor Elmer Bernstein and an 80-piece orchestra, Diamond takes a 20-song stroll down film memory lane on The Movie Album: As Time Goes By with a bombast that often borders on parody. Oversinging like he’s never oversung before, Diamond makes even the most inspired tunes of the bunch (“And I Love Her,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love”) into Branson-worthy set pieces that are all melodramatic glitz and no style. A black stain on both Diamond and movies.

This is Diamond’s equivalent of, say, one of Barbra Streisand’s Broadway albums. Come to think of it, it’s Broadway that Diamond is returning to as well; specifically, the corner of 49th Street, where he and many others turned out songs for music publishers. Some of these songs were written there; most were only in the spirit of that modern Tin Pan Alley. Handling the work of his then-rivals, such as “Spanish Harlem,” “A Groovy Kind of Love,” and “River Deep – Mountain High,” Diamond adopts his usual hammy style (he always sounds like he thinks he’s a much better singer than he is). Peter Asher patented a neo-’60s production style in crafting oldies for Linda Ronstadt in the ’70s, and he does the same thing here, which is only to say that the album is not as overproduced as some of Diamond’s recent albums, not that Asher’s versions are any competition to Phil Spector’s originals. Actually, this record sounds exactly like you would expect it to: just call to mind a familiar song like “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and imagine what it would sound like if Neil Diamond sang it. While this is clearly a holding action from the point of view of Diamond’s recording career, fans can decide for themselves whether it’s valid and, perhaps more problematic, necessary. You pays your money…
