Acclaimed jazz pianist/composer Bugge Wesseltoft renews his collaboration with electronic producer Henrik Schwarz on ‘Trialogue’. This time they are joined by E.S.T. bassist Dan Berglund to form a unique trio that expertly explores where contemporary jazz meets electronic music.

When Bugge Wesseltoft and Henrik Schwarz produced their collaboration ‘Duo’, it was clear that their synergy was both unique within, and revitalising to, the whole genre of electro-acoustic beat-based improvisation. Now the duo becomes a trio, bassist Dan Berglund brings additional dimensions and a whole new range of improvisational possibilities, new musical conversational topics, and a completely new layer of sound, giving this project a different drive, yet retaining the spirit of the Duo project. Melody, beats, and a will to surprise – not just the audience, but themselves as well – dominate.

Moments of quasi-ambient atmosphere sit alongside driving energetic swathes of blues-inflected jamming from the future, near-metallic semi-sinister meteor storms of sound rest easily beside moments of classic jazz noire. Where other musicians have engaged in similar stylistic juxtapositions, Wesseltoft, Schwarz and Berglund set themselves apart by managing the near-impossible feat of making a perfectly coherent aesthetic, a complete musical language of their own. What fans will recognise instantly is, put simply, great music.

When some collaborations occur, it feels like Fate has been paying close attention, planning something special. On one hand: Bugge Wesseltoft, pianist, composer and pioneer of electronic jazz; on the other: Henrik Schwarz, one of the most sought after producers of electronic music who has remixed stars from Michael Jackson to Ane Brun.

Bugge explains: ‘This duo feels totally organic. We are creating music on the spot, both live and in the studio. With today’s electronic tools you can really improvise with them, and Henrik is so clever with his stuff – he makes amazing music from scratch. He is doing a really kind of mellow playing, which is great because we can make this spontaneous kind of music together.

Henrik adds: ‘For me this Duo is like the first words in a long conversation. The music that is coming out of this sounds very, very new and unheard to me – there is a lot to explore in the future. We have a concept when we sit down. So we know it’s all different, but there’s a certain kind of frame for everything. There’s a starting point.”

Butcher Brown is something increasingly rare – a real band, playing for their audience and for each other. Dedicated to innovation, informed by a love of the past, their sound is a modernist fusion, fizzing with explosive energy, rich in jazz licks and astonishing with raw musicality. Gearbox Records is proud to present this, their first ever multi format global release. It’s a hometown gig (Richmond, Virginia) from July of this year. The electrifying energy reminds us how vital a live album should be.

Multi-instrumentalist DJ Harrison (who’s recently released a debut solo album on the mighty Stones Throw label) is broadly seen as the visionary, albeit this is an egalitarian band. Here his keys provide the harmonic colours around which drummer Corey Fonville’s (Christian Scott, Nicholas Payton) muscular delivery and bassist Andrew Randazzo’s
effortless cool pulsate. Marcus Tenney on Trumpet and Morgan Burr’s guitar complete the quintet.

The players were all born after the mid-70s, fusion’s golden age, but their modern, hiphop inflected funk has rich echoes of Weather Report, Return To Forever and early Earth Wind and Fire. This is the sound of a band on the verge of a brilliant future.

Part of the wave of great Hungarian conductors who took over American musical life just before and after World War II (the others included Fritz Reiner, Antal Dorati, and Eugene Ormandy), George Szell quickly transformed a middling Midwestern orchestra into one of the nation’s Big Five. His cultivation of the Cleveland Orchestra set an example of discipline and hard work that gradually helped raise the standards of orchestras across America.

Although born in Hungary, Szell was raised in Vienna, where he studied composition with Eusebius Mandyczewski and piano with Richard Robert; he also studied composition in Prague with J.B.. Foerster. Szell was a wunderkind, playing a Mozart piano concerto with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra when he was 10, and composing a number of quite solid chamber and orchestral works in lush late Romantic style as a child and teenager. He was a comparatively elderly 17 when he conducted the Berlin Philharmonic in a program including one of his own compositions.

Despite these early successes, Szell rose through the conducting ranks in the traditional way of the period, with a series of opera positions: Royal Opera of Berlin (1915-17), Strasbourg (1917-18), Prague (1919-21), Darmstadt (1921- 22), and Dsseldorf (1922-24). Szell’s first prestigious post came to him in 1924, when he was named first conductor of the Berlin State Opera; he simultaneously served as a professor at Berlin’s Hochschule fr Musik. In 1929, he moved on to become general music director of the German Opera and Philharmonic in Prague, where he remained until 1937. All this activity effectively ended his career as a composer, although he did eventually produce an interesting orchestration of Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1, “From My Life.”

Szell began focusing more on orchestral repertory in the 1930s; he made his U.S. debut as guest conductor of the St. Louis Symphony in 1930, and in 1937 he was appointed conductor of the Scottish Orchestra in Glasgow while maintaining a steady relationship with the Residentie Orkest in The Hague. Szell was in America in 1939 when war broke out in Europe; he remained in the U.S. through the war, first depending on guest engagements and then, in 1942, becoming a regular conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, where he was especially praised for his Wagner performances. In 1946 Szell took American citizenship and became music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, a post he held for 24 years (he was also the New York Philharmonic’s music advisor and senior guest conductor during the last two years of his life).

Although Szell made a few recordings in Europe in the 1950s and ’60s for Decca and in Cleveland at the very end of his life for EMI, as well as scattered 78-era efforts, the bulk of his substantial discography was the result of his long collaboration with Columbia Records in Cleveland.

There, Szell had inherited an able but ordinary orchestra and, through no little tyranny, molded it into one of America’s finest. A Szell performance was remarkable for its textural clarity, chamber-like balances, and precision of attack and release. He drilled his orchestra mercilessly, even in works it had performed with him not long before. Szell was particularly admired for his performances of Austro-Germanic classics from Haydn to Richard Strauss, his sharp renderings of works by a select few twentieth-century composers (Bartk, Prokofiev, Jancek, Walton), and his idiomatic way with Dvork; indeed, some collectors maintain that Szell’s monaural, early-1950s recording of Dvork’s Eighth Symphony with the Concertgebouw Orchestra has never been equaled. His treatment of French composers, on the other hand, was criticized for its lack of atmosphere, and detractors maintained that he achieved precision at the expense of emotional expression. To those who demanded a warmer approach to his beloved Mozart, however, Szell is said to have retorted, “One does not pour chocolate sauce over asparagus.” ~ James Reel

The music for C.SN plays as the musical background to the story of the fictional Astronaut traveling through space and sending his message back to Earth.

Eric Borders, born and raised on the westside of Los Angeles, is a keyboardist, producer and composer. He has produced for a wide range of genres and artists. He has shared stages with the likes of Kamasi Washington, Jose James, Jimmy Cliff, The Internet, Stanley Clarke and George Duke to name a few.

In 2014, Eric moved away from the group experimenting heavily with synthesizers, vocoders, and talkbox. This is when the idea of creating an alter-ego, Captain Supernova was put into place. He released the Captain’s first EP “Visions of the Unknown” a self released album.

In 2016, C.SN released his next EP “The Doors of Perception” off the Los Angeles based label Cold Busted Records. He builds on his stunning musicality and deft stylistic fusions to reveal seven tracks of smooth and uncompromisingly funky jazz-influenced music.

The next move for C.SN is a release with accomplished label Ropeadope Records. The next record “The Voyage Never Ends…“ is C.SN’s grand opus which will be released in Fall of 2019.

Alto Saxophonist Christian Weidner’s longstanding partnership with pianist Achim Kaufmann, bassist Henning Sieverts and drummer Samuel Rohrer forges the intuitive magic that makes for inspired music as the group explores the varying shades of Every Hour of the Light and Dark. Four exceptional musicians gaze inwards, sensitive, self-critical, with a simplicity and depth of feeling as they uncover the miracle of the moment. Kaufmann has been lauded as ‘one of a handful of exceptional jazz pianists who has injected a new pulse into West European improvised music.’ Sieverts ranks as one of the premier bassist/composers on the European scene, while Munich’s prestigious Süddeutsche newspaper singled out Rohrer as ‘…perhaps the most melodic among European drummers…lyrical and to-the-point.’ As for Weidner, in All About Jazz, Dan McClenaghan extolled Christian’s ‘highly developed and finely focused artistic vision’ and identified him as ‘an owner of a rare original voice’. Every Hour of the Light and Dark: a line from Walt Whitman’s Poem of Perfect Miracles relays a message of consolation and resolution that rings out and into the musical world.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 13:15 minutes | 153 MB | Genre: Pop, Acoustic

Country music, with a few shots of Mellencamp and Southern rock, was Conor Matthews main inspiration as he headed to Music City. In classic Nashville fashion, he built his own chain of connections: While working at Nordstrom’s, he sold a shirt to a music industry executive, who later stumbled upon a performance by Matthews. Impressed, the exec introduced the young newcomer to Keith Urban, who in turn arranged a meeting with Warner Chappell Music. A publishing deal followed, after which Matthews was writing with Sam Hunt, Ash Bowers, Rhett Akins and other Music Row mainstays. His career as a behind-the-scenes hitmaker seemed on track.

Then one day Matthews took a long-distance drive with a friend who lacked his endurance for nonstop country music. “After a few hours she said, ‘If I have to listen to one more country song, I’m gonna kill myself. Let me play one song that I like.’ And she played ‘What Goes Around Comes Around’ by Justin Timberlake. I was like, ‘What is this? Play another one!’ She played ‘Cry Me A River.’ Right then and there, those songs changed my life and what I wanted to do in music.”

Matthews deep-dove into Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, Usher and other pop/R&B innovators. Warner-Chappell granted him leave to explore a new realm as a writer. He took lessons from vocal coach Brett Manning and practiced five hours a day until he felt a connection to the style.

With this unique take, Conor Matthews has grown his vision and gone on to release many singles in this vein. Stripped features stripped down acoustics versions of several of these songs.

More. Again. Forever strikes a mature balance. It’s escapist in its sound but humane in its approach to the world. It’s experimental but familiar, and tests what the band are capable of while proving to be their more focussed work to date. Band who insist on exploring, learning and get closer to the truth about life and human existence, and there is just no way that this can ever, ever, be a bad thing.

Trumpeter, composer and band leader David Weiss has a wide-ranging inquisitiveness and acquaintance with both modernistic, forward-seeking jazz and early jazz-fusion. On the 76-minute Wake Up Call, Weiss’ latest album with his ensemble Point of Departure, he showcases his uncanny ability to uncork material which is not always well-known to jazz fans, but which brings to life music which has an essence that goes beyond what is predictable. Notably, there are no originals among the nine tracks on Wake Up Call, and yet Weiss has managed to put compositions by John McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson and others into a cohesive and thematic whole. No easy feat to reinterpret other musicians’ work and make it comfortably fit into a singular compendium. Weiss slices his album into three sections: Prologue; Unfinished Business; and New Beginning.

Weiss not only changes perceptions of other artists’ material, but he alters his group’s line-up. Outgoing tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen is heard on three cuts, while new tenor sax player Myron Walden is featured on six numbers. Drummer Jamire Williams is gone; Kush Abadey now sits behind the drum kit. Guitarist Nir Felder is on three tracks, while new guitarists Ben Eunson and Travis Reuter are used on the remaining material. The one holdover is bassist Matt Clohesy. This larger ensemble provides Weiss a broader sonic palette, which he utilizes to his benefit on extended pieces (the shortest tune is over five minutes in length, most are eight to 12 minutes long).

Weiss’ prologue employs McLaughlin’s “Sanctuary,” from the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s 1973 LP, Birds of Fire. Weiss maintains McLaughlin’s ominous expression but heightens the foreboding mannerisms by stretching the arrangement to nearly ten minutes while supplying room for Walden to deliver stinging sax notes, while Abadey sustains both a ticking and an intensified rhythmic pulse. During “Sanctuary,” Eunson also channels McLaughlin during his comprehensive solo shift. The middle chapter of Weiss’ musical narrative, Unfinished Business, contains three tracks. Up first is Shorter’s slightly obscure “Two Faced,” which comes from Miles Davis’ compilation, Water Babies. Davis’ 1968 recording (not issued until 1976) was early fusion: electric and acoustic instruments balanced via a directional groove. Weiss abbreviates his version by six minutes, but at 12:22 “Two Faced” still has lots of space to preserve a continuum of groove, theme and subtle progression, and the way the band gradually, inextricably escalates the tempo and enthusiasm is something to hear. Allen and Weiss both offer encompassing solos. During the tune’s first half, Weiss suggests Miles Davis’ tone and emotive conveyance. In the second half, Allen takes over and displays his precise control and command of his tenor sax. The remainder of Unfinished Business comprises two Charles Moore tunes. Moore was part of Detroit’s 1960s-and-onward DIY artistic community, and didn’t have much commercial success, which means his “Multidirection” and “Noh Word” are probably unknown to most listeners. The nearly-nine minute “Multidirection” has an energy and conviction like “Two Faced,” but is more assertive and insistent, while conserving a jazz-fusion affirmation. There is a quieter momentum on “Noh Word,” where Allen and Weiss meld beautifully together and then layer in supple soloing.

The New Beginning segment has five interpretations, and this is where Weiss pulls the band into some stimulating musical pathways. A must-hear is Henderson’s “Gazelle,” where Walden blows up a storm. This is Henderson before his funk period, and as such, it’s a track which pushes into bop and neo-bop territory with great results. Kudos to Weiss for presenting this and introducing it to a new audience. Weiss revisits Detroit jazz roots with Kenny Cox’s “Sojourn.” Cox, like Moore, is another artist who remains little known to current jazz fans. “Sojourn” is prime post-bop/pre-fusion. Two of Tony Williams’ pieces, “Pee Wee” and “The Mystic Knights of the Sea,” are also part of the New Beginning portion. Weiss transforms “Pee Wee” from the modulated, modal tune on Miles Davis’ 1967 LP, Sorcerer, and into a sometimes-boisterous workout fronted by Eunson’s declamatory guitar. “The Mystic Knights of the Sea” is another one which Weiss unearthed and big thanks for that. Williams’ fusion-fueled original is from his 1972 release, The Old Bum’s Rush, and is not often encountered by Williams’ aficionados. Eunson flies high on his searing and soaring solo, and Walden establishes a comparable turn for his intense sax improvisation. There is a palpable synthesis which suffuses throughout Wake Up Call, as if all these disparate compositions were always meant to be together, forming a compressive collection. Weiss’ brilliance is how he reveals how elements from different sources can have connections which are not apparent but make complete sense.

“De capo” – an orchestral “best of” in the original line-up, quasi “back from where we started”, as one of the De-Phazz singers sang on the penultimate album … With the words “orchestra” or “best of” you may be inclined to rather grimace and kindly thank you to leave the advertised work on the left or on the shelves of the few remaining “local music dealers” … – but as luck would have it, the solid boxes sound like a stroll through the solid boxes A sound that irresistibly leads you to ask what is going on …

The new De-Phazz album is the answer, in a perfect interaction with the STÜBAphilharmonie, which among other things. already realized similar projects with Clueso and Alin Coen. Surprisingly refreshing, surprising the voice of Barbara Lahr, “grand dame” of the first sensational album “Detunized Gravity”, surprising like the orchestra and the most successful German lounge band around Pit Baumgartner in the mix of electronic sound toys, subtly bombastic orchestral instruments and the almost the usual wonderful sound of the voices harmonize in such a way that it is ideally suited to the cliché of the cozy sofa lounge for all kinds of occasions on the side as well as unexpectedly sweaty dancing …

There is deep soul in the music of Devon Gilfillian but for the talented Nashville-based singer-songwriter and bandleader, that descriptor goes way beyond a mere genre classification.

Following his electrifying 2016 debut EP with upbeat singles like “High” and “Troublemaker” in 2018, Gilfillian signed to Capitol Records and hit the road performing with the likes of Anderson East, Keith Urban, Gladys Knight, Kaleo, The Fray, Mavis Staples, and more. In early 2019, Gilfillian traveled to Africa to find healing and inspiration before headlining a tour in Scandinavia and opening for Brothers Osborne on their spring tour. His latest single “Get Out and Get It” off of his forthcoming full-length record is available now.

“Black Hole Rainbow” was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, The War On Drugs) in his iconic Downtown LA studio, with additional album production from Ariel Rechtshaid (Vampire Weekend, HAIM). Shortly after wrapping the recording, Devon and a team from Capitol embarked on a trip to South Africa to grasp the creative vision for the new record. One which you can see very clearly through the imagery associated with the roll out. “Get Out and Get It” was the first single and music video to be release, landing in the top 15 at AAA radio. “Even Though It Hurts” followed not long after with a visualizer and saw a lot of love from fans and critics alike. The upcoming record named “Black Hold Rainbow” will undoubtedly be one of the best debuts in 2020.
