Since the 2012 release of her debut album, ‘The Aviary’, singer-songwriter Ana Silvera’s work has garnered broad acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Her uniquely ethereal brand of alt-folk has seen her perform at SXSW, Iceland Airwaves Festival, Liverpool Royal Philharmonic and more, whilst recent collaborations include composing for Royal Ballet, duetting with Imogen Heap and singing original songs with early music consort Concerto Caledonia.

Now six-years after her last full-length record, Silvera is about to release her sophomore album, ‘Oracles’. Poignant, dreamlike and beautiful, and written following a period of intense grief, ‘Oracles’ was Silvera’s way to transmute her emotions into a cathartic work of art. In 2011, the song-cycle was debuted with REC, and the following year was performed as part of a sold-out concert on the Roundhouse Main Stage, earning Silvera a nomination for a British Composer Award. She then returned to the Roundhouse Theatre to make a live recording of the piece, which forms her second full-length album.

The recording features Silvera as a soloist, a choir led by Josephine Stephenson and a stellar line-up of guest musicians including pianist Bill Laurance (Snarky Puppy), double bassist Jasper Høiby (Phronesis) and drummer Jacob Smedegaard (Fiction, Du Blonde) as well as Simran Singh (violin), Anne Chauveau-Dhayan (cello) and Naomi Morris (percussion).

The result is a haunting yet life-affirming collection of songs whose lyrics explore loss, love, salvation and the journey towards acceptance, themes that are underscored by beguiling, weaving choral lines, mellifluous Debussian piano melodies, subtly off-kilter percussion and rapturous strings. All is unified by Silvera’s dynamic vocal style which evokes the delicate yet theatrical prowess of Kate Bush, combined with what the Arts Desk described as a “Björk-like spontaneity’.

Five years on from the release of their previous record, Austin’s beloved art-rock heroes .And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead return with their tenth album – X: The Godless Void and Other Stories. Expansive yet concise, this album nods to the band’s traditional touchstones – the feral scree of Sonic Youth, Rush’s symphonic anthems, the textured bliss of My Bloody Valentine – while morphing effortlessly into newer forms. The synth-orchestral swell of curtain-raiser “Opening Crescendoes” recalls Hans Zimmer and Tangerine Dream, before “All Who Wander” descends from guitar-soaked high drama into simmering, murky psych.Next up, “Something Like This” offers nods to the ethereal songcraft that defined the sound of the legendary 4AD label, before everything kicks in at full pelt with “Into The Godless Void”, as noisy and thrilling an existential anthem as the band have ever put their name to. And this is just the first four songs.Work on X: The Godless Void and Other Stories began in earnest in 2018, after Keely returned to the band’s hometown of Austin following five years in Cambodia. With a new line-up having recently toured the 20th anniversary of their Madonna album, they’re also reverted to the live format of their earlier years, with Reece and Keely alternating between drums and frontman duties – a musical partnership that dates back to their high school days. Appropriately, it all feels fresh.

This album comprises music inspired by the great Ahmad Jamal and his elegant arrangements of popular jazz standards. From 1958-1961 Jamal played with bassist Israel Corsby and drummer Vernel Fournier. This legendary trio was described as playing bright and light swing music with phrasing and harmony from the bebop area and at the same time clear parallel to classical music. Bassist Andreas Dreier has once again brought his trio together. After amazing critics from the first CD «Poinciana» (2014) Andreas Dreier Trio is now ready with the follow-up. Once again the music is arrangements from Jamals piano trio translated into guitar trio. With one of Norways leading jazz guitarists Bjørn Vidar Solli and the Australian drummer Adam Pache, this trio presents exclusive and elegant swing Music influenced by one of jazz history’s greatest piano trios.

“As if Dreier’s debt to Ahmad Jamal was not clear enough from his debut CD (‘Poinciana’), he has now released another complete set drawn from Jamal’s arrangements of the Great American songbook. This set includes classic tunes such as ‘I’ll remember April’, ‘You don’t know what love is’, ‘Moonlight in Vermont’, and Moon river’, together with a couple of Jamal originals (‘Ahmad’s blues’, and ‘Raincheck’). The set borrows heavily from the LP that Jamal’s trio released in the 1950s (‘Live from the Pershing: But not for me’) when they were the house band at Chicago’s Pershing Hotel.

The transition from piano trio to guitar trio is seamless and the playing captures perfectly the highly syncopated rhythms that allow Jamal to straddle swing and bop, and the intelligent use of shading that Jamal uses to bridge jazz and classical styles of piano playing. There is also here, what Miles called Jamal’s ‘understatement’, that way in which the space between notes is given precedence and makes each note ring. It was, to some extent, Miles’ endorsement that helped Jamal gain the critical attention, in addition to his commercial success: the critics of the time had tended to dismiss Jamal as a cocktail pianist, missing the complexity and grace of his compositions. After hearing this set, you might be tempted, like I was, to return to some of Jamal’s work. This is no slight to Dreier’s work here – and, if anything is meant as a compliment, because this trio breathes such vibrant life into the originals that it was worth listening back to them just to get the sense of similarities and differences.

In this trio, Dreier takes on the role of Israel Crosby, but not as a mere copyist. Rather, his playing his a richer and more ambitious edge to it, not only driving the rhythm but also suggesting the direction that the melodies will take. Pache’s drums carry the flavour of the early 1950s when swing and bop rhythms worked against each other. Over the top of this tight rhythm section, Solli’s guitar swings and sings effortlessly.” (Chris Baber)

Andy LaVerne is featured playing two Yamaha grand pianos on this session, though it was not your typical overdub; it was essentially done live with LaVerne playing first on one instrument equipped with a disklavier (essentially a computer that records all the nuances of what’s played) and accompanying the first performance live on a second piano, enabling better interaction. LaVerne’s hypnotic “Pair Of Chairs” introduces the concept with success, while Bill Evans’ little known “Orbit” is given a Brazilian flavor. “Maiden Voyage” works particularly well with two pianos, which would be very difficult to pull off as a solo; then in Chick Corea’s “Spain” LaVerne makes use of the full range of both keyboards combined for a richly textured arrangement. This is a very interesting experiment worth acquiring by fans of duo piano. ~ Ken Dryden

The legendary Canadian metal band Annihilator: Jeff Waters (vocals and guitar) Rich Hinks (bass), Aaaron Homma (guitar) and Fabio Alessandrini (Drums) will deliver their 17th studio album on January 24th 2020 via Neverland Music/Silver Lining. “BALLISTIC, SADISTIC” promises to deliver a full speed-metal aural assault that would have even the most fearless thrasher quaking in their white high tops. The album is comprised of ten tracks of pure Annihilating metal, produced, engineered, edited and mixed by Jeff Waters himself in his recording studio, Watersound Studios UK. The band will be touring Europe from October on ‘A Tour For The Demented 2019’ with special guests Archer Nation from the USA.

“It’s the best record I’ve made since 2009’s ‘Schizo Deluxe’ and I think many will argue that this one is in the top three”, said mainman, writer and producer, Jeff Waters.

Produced, engineered, and mixed by Waters, Ballistic, Sadistic was recorded at the brand new, state of the art, Watersound Studios UK earlier this year with additional engineering and editing by bassist Rich Hinks and mastering by Maor Appelbaum (Faith No More, Halford) at Maor Appelbaum Mastering in California.

Not many bands can pride themselves on never succumbing to mediocrity and only ever producing masterpieces, but Annihilator is one of the rare few. The man responsible is their leader, the undisputed guitar-god known for his one-of-a-kind playing techniques, Jeff Waters. In addition to being a skilled composer, he is back once again as lead vocalist for the band’s grand return on this album. Ballistic, Sadistic is a real gem that puts to one side the experimentation that Waters had been revelling in these past few years and takes us back to the band’s roots. It’s an album that is criminally technical and precise and is vintage Annihilator through and through. As always, there are bound to be complainers but it’s hard to deny that these tracks, especially the turbo-charged The Attitude, are perfect examples of thrash metal the way it should be. Waters has really stepped up his game here and become more adventurous with his vocals on this album, sounding somewhere between a Dee Snider and Dave Mustaine in his younger days. Catchy and packed full of aggression and raw energy, Ballistic, Sadistic is the proof that thrash certainly hasn’t had its day and that Annihilator is still one of the most underrated bands out there. – Maxime Archambaud

Back to the front in so many ways, Apocalyptica are proud to announce the release of their 9th studio album Cell-0. Bristling with an epically baroque life and energy, January 10th 2020 is not just the sound of Apocalyptica returning to their expansive instrumental roots, it is the sound of Apocalyptica revisiting their deepest love with a renewed sense of knowledge and passion. The journeys are deeper, the destinations further and the rewards so much richer than anything the exciting, ambitious quartet have ever produced. Produced by the band and mixed by Andrew Scheps, who has worked with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, Metallica and Black Sabbath, Cell-0 sees the band soaring into ethereal space on “Ashes Of The Modern World” while diving head-first into aggressive thrash ‘cello-riffery’ during “En Route To Mayhem”. At once a smorgasbord, symphony and crushing metallic masterpiece, Cell-0 shows a band at the very peak of its unique and magical compositional powers.

In September 2014, three songwriters met for the first time in a cafe in East Nashville. By the next morning they had put the finishing touches to their first song, ‘Applewood Road’, which they recorded live to tape at Nashville’s all analogue studio, Welcome to 1979.

The song’s nostalgic air, along with the clear, sparse arrangement of three vocals accompanied by double bass, drew immediate positive response, and they decided to expand the idea into a full album.

Six months later, they reconvened to write, rehearse and record songs for the self-titled album Applewood Road. The songs were again performed live around a single microphone at Welcome to 1979 and recorded to two-track tape with minimal accompaniment from some of Nashville’s finest session players, including Aaron Lee Tasjan, Josh Day, Fats Kaplin, Jabe Beyer, and Telisha Williams.

The tapes were assembled at London’s most exclusive high-end mastering suite, Gearbox Records, mastered through their vintage analogue outboard, and lacquers cut in-house on their own Heaco lathe.

A delicate debut album of introspective piano and electronica by a young French pianist, who felt confident enough to take the plunge with his own solo project, as a showcase for his compositional talents and refined touch, after several years in the bands of Sandra Nkaké and Henri Texier. ‘A composition most often occurs in an unexpected manner. It lies dormant in me and emerges when the emotion is stronger than the decency that keeps it inside. Upriver is like a diary that I have been writing for more than ten years. During this period, I have experienced striking encounters that inspired me for these stories. Each of them left a secret within me that was impossible for me to keep. Like a storyteller, I have transformed these stories into melodies, into sound colors, for it is in the music that resides the most fundamental part of these secrets, the part that I can share and that links the stories to the audience.’ Armel Dupas

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 55:42 minutes | 1,06 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Jazzland Recordings

Atomic is a stalwart modern jazz band from Scandinavia featuring Havard Wiik on piano, Fredrik Ljungkvist on saxophone and clarinet, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten on bass and Hans Hulboekmo on drums, replacing Paal Nilssen-Love. The music is their trademark free-bop, beginning with “Laterna Interfult” which opens with a mysterious melody before diving into some more powerful improvised sections, where the music stutters and sways, and the horns weave and joust around each other. Ljungkvist breaks lose on saxophone, before stopping on a dime, moving the music back to a more passive position. There are sections of faster, choppier collective improvisation which are quite exciting as is the nimble way that everyone can drop out to give Haker-Flaten a well deserved bass solo. The full band returns for a rousing and swinging conclusion. More beautiful bass playing is featured on “A New Junction” which patiently adds instruments developing a slow simmer. Spacious and spare, there is room to move for trumpet and clarinet, then involving droplets of piano. “Lucidity” jumps out of the gate hard with the full band firing on all cylinders. A punchy trumpet solo from Broo, is kicked in the pants nicely with Hulboekmo’s heavy pulse. They ramp down to a more abstract section, before Wiik gleefully leads them back into the back into the fray with trumpet and saxophone reaching for the sky about the powerful rhythm team. Flute like trumpet from Broo along with open ended piano draws subtle shades on “Start/Stop” before they jump up with a more complex group improvisation including a nice section for clarinet and bass, followed by very heavy hitting piano and drums accented by trumpet squeals. “Major” has a noir-ish haunted opening, Things spring to life with throbbing fast bass (IHF is just epic throughout the whole album) pushing Broo’s trumpet ever higher. The full band comes together, rocketing into orbit with an excellent collectively improvised section. Atomic has been around for a while now and their music continues to evolve, moving from jazz to free improvisation and back. The band is a group of very talented individual musicians, but when the come together, the whole is definitely better than the sum of its parts.

Viktor is the name of trumpeter Bastian Stein’s second Pirouet CD. It breaks out and into a completely new soundscape. Forgoing a harmony instrument, Stein along with saxophonist Johannes Enders, bassist Phil Donkin, and drummer James Maddren conjure up fascinating sounds with enormous latitude – sounds that have an unusually personal touch.

‘What a tone!’ exclaims one critic, another extols his ‘flawless style’. They all agree: Bastian Stein’s first CD for the Pirouet label highlights the young trumpeter as an especially fresh, powerful voice in jazz. Now calling Cologne home, Stein was born in Heidelberg, Germany in 1983. He grew up in Vienna where he began studying trumpet at the age of 15. Later in Amsterdam he studied with the great jazz trumpeter Ack van Rooyen and refined his play in New York studying with Bo Nilsson. With such outstanding abilities, it makes sense that he plays with pianist Pablo Held, one of the major new forces in German jazz. Pablo is no longer present on ‘Viktor’, Stein’s new CD. The new band is composed purposely without a chordal instrument; instead, two wind instruments, bass and drums – a composition that allows the musicians to play much more ‘openly, with more variety’. The results: music with a lot of freedom of movement. Stein dedicates the CD to his son Viktor, and then gets to work. Standing next to Stein is Saxophonist Johannes Enders, a giant of a man with a big tone who has been a professor in Leipzig since 2008. On bass, Phil Donkins, on drums, James Maddren, two much-in-demand young Brits. The one is known for his play with saxophonist Marius Neset, the other for his work with pianist Gwilym Simcock. The CD concludes with a gracious bow to the composer Gustav Mahler. Bastian Stein’s ‘Viktor’ – a very personal take on jazz that gazes over wide horizons.

American rock & roll mainstay Beach Slang has announced their most accomplished new album to date ‘The Deadbeat Bang of Heartbreak City’. While James has always invited a rotating gang of friends and players for recordings and shows, this record features a VERY special guest bassist: Tommy Stinson (The Replacements, Guns N Roses). “It was a real-life rock & roll daydream come true,” says James.

While James Alex has always infused his anthemic power pop with the earnestness of a gutter poet, Deadbeat Bang sneaks up on you. Like all Beach Slang albums, the eleven tracks are all written and arranged by James. It’s big, loud, and brash, immediately setting the tone for a record more inspired by the stadium classic rock of Cheap Trick than early Replacements. The record was mixed by heavy-hitter Brad Wood, celebrated for his work with the Smashing Pumpkins and Liz Phair.

Drawing comparisons to Jawbreaker and The Replacements, but never approaching easy facsimile, Beach Slang paid tribute to the past by lighting a new torch with their critically-acclaimed previous records. ‘The Deadbeat Bang Of Heartbreak City’ hits stores January 10th via Bridge Nine/Quiet Panic.

Somewhere, someone has been desperately hoping that Hollywood would get around to making a movie adaptation of the late-’70s TV show “Fantasy Island.” Meanwhile, it would seem that the rest of us that is, the filmgoing public are just extras in an elaborate cautionary tale designed to teach that person a lesson. The point being: Be careful what you wish for; such corny old TV series are better suited for reruns than for reboots. As suave yet sinister host Mr. Roarke warns the half-dozen expendable douchebags er, guests who’ve traveled to this enchanted retreat to live out their wildest dreams, “Fantasies rarely play out as you would expect.”

Across four decades Ben Watt has maintained a committed forward-looking course, from the ardent echo-drenched folk of his early solo work with Robert Wyatt, through seventeen years as musical mainspring and co-lyricist in the best-selling Everything But the Girl with Tracey Thorn – and ten at the helm of his smart electronic label Buzzin’ Fly – to his more recent moving non-fiction and mid-life solo albums, the award-winning ‘Hendra’ (2014) and ‘Fever Dream’ (2016). ‘Storm Damage’ is Watt’s fourth solo LP. Sonically adventurous, lyrically detailed and engaged, the album – written and produced by Watt himself – is a personal journey through anxiety and change cut through with an insistent defiance.

Like Fever Dream before it, Storm Damage was born of personal anguish — it was written after the loss of Ben Watt’s half-brother and in the midst of the sociopolitical turmoil of the late 2010s — but the album sounds and feels different than its predecessor. Chalk that up to Watt’s decision to create Storm Damage with what he calls “a future-retro trio,” a combo consisting of a piano, double bass, and drums, supplemented by various synths and found sounds. The result is a hushed yet an intense affair, an album whose conflicted emotions are apparent but presented in a fashion that’s so subdued, it’s nearly soothing. The soft, subtle tension between the deeply felt songs and the smooth, sophistication of the execution is quite rewarding, since the album can alternately play like a plea or a balm, depending on mood or timing. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

This budget LP just contains ten short selections and does not give personnel or exact recording dates. Recorded in London during 1936-37, the brief program does contain more than its share of rewarding moments, most notably the debut recording of Carter’s “When Lights Are Low,” the advanced “Waltzin’ the Blues” (performed at a time when jazz waltzes were unheard of), the atmospheric “Nightfall,” “Just a Mood” and a fine version of “Royal Garden Blues.” Carter is heard throughout, switching between alto, clarinet, tenor and trumpet.

‘Foolish Loving Spaces’ is the follow-up to Blossoms’ 2018 album ‘Cool Like You’ and features the single ‘Your Girlfriend’. The album was produced by the band’s consistent and talented team of James Skelly and Rich Turvey at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool. Tom Ogden’s increasingly direct lyrical range turns album three into a romantic page-turner of light and shade, while its divergent moods are supplied by Myles Kellock’s piano and keyboard lines, careering from urgent stabs of TV game show-theme synth to more classic, rolling notes. The record’s multi-instrumental colour and widescreen sound is provided by pedal steel/lead guitarist Josh Dewhurst, while Joe Donovan on drums and Charlie Salt on bass bring fluidly danceable grooves throughout, complemented on occasion by a wall of gospel harmony.
