Yes, the grandfathers of Rock N Roll are still cool and determined to maintain their reputation. An enormous discography doesn’t stop the Stones from delighting their fans with some of their legendary live performances. From The Vault − San Jose 1999 is the last episode in their series of concerts during their 1999 No Security tour throughout the United States and Europe. Well accustomed to filling out stadiums, the band wanted this tour to target more reasonably sized venues: 15,000 people nonetheless… It had been almost 25 years since the English band had stopped in San Jose, as evidenced by the audience’s reaction. The crowd was boiling with excitement! Here, the Stones offer a large selection of their hit songs (Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Woman, Paint It Black, It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It), Start Me Up, Brown Sugar, Sympathy for the Devil…), ranging from the 1960s to 1997 with Saint Of Me and Out Of Control from the album Bridges To Babylon. A tremendous batch!  – Clara Bismuth

Nearly a decade into their careers and with growing families, the Nashville quartet’s third album wrestles with balancing the magic of touring and the pull to get back home. Full of wistful highway anthems built on breezy three-part harmonies, Greetings from the Neon Frontier winks at some of rock’s greatest highwaymen the Eagles (“Wildfire”), the Allman Brothers (“Big Sky”), and Tom Petty (“Stand by You”) but producer Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Little Big Town) grasps onto the band’s country roots, evoking heartbreak with a devastating blend of weepy fiddle and pedal steel (“Two Broken Hearts”).

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/192 kHz | Time – 32:38 minutes | 1,23 GB | Genre: Rock
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Fantasy Records

In the 1960s, Tom Fogerty had already shaken up American music with his brother John in the band Creedence Clearwater Revival, one of the most important and popular American bands of his time. When he left the group in 1970, mainly because of rising tensions, he was quickly taken by a nostalgia for music and met Merl Saunders who put the wind back in his sails. In 1972, Tom Fogerty recorded Excalibur with John Kahn (bass), Bill Vitt (drums), Jerry Garcia (guitar and pedal steel) and Merl Saunders (piano) on the label Fantasy Records. Fogerty composed eight of the ten tracks and confirmed his talent as a songwriter. Unsurprisingly, there are a few Creedence styles which resurface, but also some more country sonorities that could be Merle Haggard or Buck Owens. He even reworks Rocky Road Blues by the pope of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. With Forty Years as the opening track, the eldest of the Fogerty’s already sets the bar high with a country melody accompanied by Garcia’s pedal steel guitar and bitter lyrics about hard labour. Tom Fogerty also knows how to mix together different sounds like on Get Funky where the piano groove prevails, whereas it’s an archaic melody on the synthesizer that imposes itself on Sign Of The Devil. Whether it’s more conventional rock such as Black Jack Jenny or a bluesy tribute to Fats Domino with a cover of Sick and Tired, Tom Fogerty’s talent lies in harmonizing this medley of influences to perfection. A new edition of Excalibur to enjoy in a remastered version.  – Clara Bismuth

Sing For The Day! showcases Styx guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s rousing 2016 solo turn with the Cleveland-based Contemporary Youth Orchestra, under the direction of principal conductor/founder Liza Grossman. Alongside guitarist/musical director Will Evankovich and backed by the next generation of the finest high-school-aged musicians in Ohio, Shaw also celebrates the tenth anniversary of Styx’s triumphant 2006 One With Everything performance with the CYO. Here, the CYO & Chorus bring new life to many classic band and solo tracks in front of an enthusiastic audience at the intimate Waetjen Auditorium in Cleveland, including “Blue Collar Man,” “Girls With Guns,” “High Enough,” “Too Much Time on My Hands,” “Crystal Ball” (featuring the debut of its never-recorded lost verse), and most especially “Renegade,” highlighted by an epic guitar/violin duel between Shaw and a noted CYO alum. “It was so much bigger and more everlasting than any of us imagined it would be,” marvels Shaw – now see and hear just how magical Sing was for yourself.

John Duffey’s influence on bluegrass cannot be overstated. His contributions to legendary bands The Country Gentlemen and The Seldom Scene helped transform the genre from a regional Appalachian music to a sophisticated, urban sound, resulting in a legion of new fans the world over. On Epilogue, the bluegrass music community comes together to create a marvelously fitting tribute to “the father of modern bluegrass.” Sam Bush, John Cowan, Bela Fleck, Bruce Molsky, Tim O’Brien, Don Rigsby, and so many more it’s a rare and special all-star cast. Their eagerness and passion to record the album attest to how profoundly Duffey impacted them and countless other musicians today.

It’s already been over twenty years since John Duffey, one of the best bluegrass and folk musicians, passed away. Having become an icon and a source of inspiration for many artists, the album Epilogue: A Tribute to John Duffey was a long awaited tribute. The lone tenor with his unique and innovative mandolin technique successfully managed to make bluegrass more popular and approachable. A founding member of the bands The Country Gentlemen and The Seldom Scene, he won over many hearts with his musical style and pulled off a true artistic transmission. Released on the label Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the album features a myriad of talents to give a second life to John Duffey and the bluegrass he loved so. Lou Reid and Randy Waller start it off with Sad and Lonesome Day, enthusiastically accompanied by the banjo and guitar. The whole piece is just one surprise after another, with contributions from the likes of Amanda Smith, Jonathan Edwards, Dudley Connell, and Tim O’Brien. It breathes the fragrances of America, with traditional country music tuned to more contemporary voices in great classics like If I Were a Carpenter or the unrecognizable Girl from the North Country, interpreted by Steve Gulley. The languid and melancholic ballad of Cash and Dylan has morphed under the sway of the banjo and mandolin as Bruce Molsky plays around on Chim-Chim-Cher-Ee. Then the old friends close out this tribute. John Starling, a former member of Seldom Scene, is mesmerizing when he tells the story of Mary with his strings and accompanied by a choir on the ballad Bringing Mary Home. An album that ends with Akira Otsuka’s mandolin solo that brings a reverent hearing for a perfect homage to John Duffey.  – Clara Bismuth

No need to go back to the various faces displayed by Leonard Bernstein, conductor, composer, educator, presenter, writer, etc. Like Gershwin, Bernstein has tackled all musical genres and has also influenced them himself! To the point that his music has become some sort of American soundtrack, from Broadway to pop to jazz. Talking about jazz. In the middle of the celebration of Bernstein’s centenary, the label Decca offers to compile the love of the greatest musicians and singers of yesterday and today for the art of the author of West Side Story. The interest of this Jazz Loves Bernsteinmostly lies in the gathering of classics and less-known pieces. From Billie Holliday in Big Stuff (from Fancy Free) to Diana Krall and Mark Whitfield for Some Other Time (from the musical On the Town), the spectrum is quite large. You will find here gems such as Tonight from West Side Story performed with much warmth by Billy Eckstine, or, from the same work, Maria and I Feel Pretty magnified by Sarah Vaughan. Other big names like Oliver Nelson, Oscar Peterson in trio, Bobby Scott, Eric Reed, Mel Tormé, Carmen McRae, Bill Charlap, Maynard Ferguson and Bob James cover in their own way songs and themes that have entered the American Heritage to appropriate them. Just like Lucky To Be Me, performed by Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund helped by pianist Bill Evans.  – Marc Zisman

Formed in 1968 in Kent, England, the band is probably best remembered for the hit songs “Early In the Morning” and “Hitchin’ A Ride”, which both became gold in the USA and reached the Top Ten. “Hitchin A Ride” actually became a hippy anthem and dance craze. Going against the heavy acid rock trend of the late sixties with their brilliant melodies and harmonic singing, the band, still active today, is one of the true forgotten gems of the era.

Frisson Sextet, the second album from the saxophonist/composer Vernau Mier, is an introspective work summarizing his personal experiences during the last months in Barcelona before starting a new chapter in Switzerland. It is through his compositions that he reflects on the experience of being detached from a place and a life and migrating to an unknown place. Looking forward to new opportunities with the freedom to explore new frontiers while dealing with the frisson caused by the beginning of a new life.

Frisson Sextet merges different sounds of the jazz tradition, from a straight-ahead approach to free-jazz and odd meters. Although the arranged parts have a lot of importance on an ensemble like this, the improvisation and interaction are very present in almost every second.

Wet – Still Run (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/48 kHz | Time – 40:41 minutes | 485 MB | Genre: Indie Pop
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Columbia

Still Run is the new album from Brooklyn, NY based alternative band Wet, and is the follow up to the band’s critically acclaimed debut album Don’t You from 2016. Still Run shows Wet with a more upbeat and pop driven sound than their debut. The band’s new sound and new outlook, is informed by lead singer and songwriter Kelly Zutrau taking more creative control of the project. Much of Wet’s shift stems from Zutrau’s more forceful vocals, which allow her direct, yet poetic lyrics to resonate more deeply, and which leap out of the sunnier production. Producers like Rostam (Haim, Solange), Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief), and John Hill (Santigold, M.I.A.) assisted primary producer and Wet band member Joe Valle, who brings a new comfort level to his production style, presenting dark lyrics in a brighter way that highlights their innate intensity and lets Zutrau’s songwriting shine. “There are a million ways to make a good song sound good,” she says. “But what matters to me most in the end are the vocal, and the songwriting, and whatever serves those best.” Wet is recognized for their deeply-hued emotional pop, well documented by the New York Times, Spin, and NPR among many others. Rolling Stone noted that Wet “set themselves apart with music that combines the elegant ache of Nineties R&B with the raw honesty of indie pop…”. Still Run is a testament to taking that control and pursuing one’s artistic vision and it also shows how any hiccups that might crop up along the way can make the vision’s eventual realization more satisfying.

Olga Peretyatko, Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, Dmitry Liss – Russian Light (2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 54:45 minutes | 890 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Sony Classical

On her new album “Russian Light”, Olga Peretyatko presents favourite arias and songs from her homeland Russia — by Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky and Shostakovich. Many of them are well known (Rachmaninov’s Vocalise) but there are also unknown rare jewels on the album like the songs from Rachmaninov or the opera arias by Shostakovich. She teamed with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the best orchestras in Russia, and excellent for this kind of repertoire with conductor Dimitry Liss, specialist for this repertoire.

The main focus of “Russian Light” falls on excerpts from operas that have left a deep imprint on Russia’s national music. Among these are Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmila as well as Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel, The Snow Maiden and The Tsar’s Bride. The latter piece represents a personal triumph for Ms Peretyatko, for she sang the role of Marfa under Daniel Barenboim to open the 2013 season at the Berlin State Opera. With her silvery timbre and solid mastery of coloratura she thrilled not only the audience but the critic of Der Tagespiegel: “Olga Peretyatko projects Marfa as a being so delicate and other-worldly that it strikes the knowledgeable listener to the core.”

Other excerpts on “Russian Light” are taken from operas by Stravinsky and Shostakovich that likewise accompanied Ms Peretyatko on her rise to stardom. In 2009 she stepped in at short notice for an indisposed colleague to sing the role of Lidochka in Shostakovich’s operetta Moscow, Cheryomushki at the Opra de Lyon. Though she had only two days’ time before the premire, she won acclaim for her breathtaking character depiction. In 2010 she sang The Nightingale in Stravinsky’s like-named opera (Le Rossignol) at the festival in Aix-en-Provence. When the production was mounted in New York and Canada the North American critics went wild about her effortless presentation and the “fresh sound of her voice”.

The Rachmaninov songs suit that lower register particularly well; the famous Vocalise is luxuriantly attractive, and Don’t Sing, My Beauty sensuously nostalgic…she closes with two songs from Shostakovich’s determinedly chirpy musical Moscow Cheryomushki…Peretyatko brings out their faux-naif charm, to round off a very enjoyable programme – BBC Music Magazine, September 2017

“The opening years of the twenty-first century can justifiably lay claim to being a new golden age for choral music. I wanted to embark on a series of recordings to reflect this and to showcase some of today’s best contemporary composers, placing their works in direct relief with masterpieces from previous ages. This recording, the second in our ‘Renaissance gems and their reflections’ series, looks at the music of Thomas Tallis, and we are delighted to have commissioned a number of talented composers to offer their personal reflections on his works. I hope that these new pieces, like Tallis’ originals, will find their way into the repertoire of other vocal groups, delighting audiences both now and in the future.”

The Orchestra Luna album began the musical legacy of Rick Berlin, the composer/singer who goes by his birth name, Richard Kinscherf, on this Epic Records debut in 1974. The seven-piece ensemble was truly groundbreaking in a world that doesn’t take kindly to innovation. Where the Who were content to write rock operas, Kinscherf and his band put opera to rock. This adventurous mix of songs, written as if they were Broadway show tunes backed by a rock band with jazz and classical influences, might sound like a bit much, and 11 minutes and 53 seconds of “Doris Dreams” never had a chance of Top 40 success, or an edit that could get it there, but that idiosyncrasy is part of what makes this album so daring, and special. Co-produced by Rupert Holmes, the man who gave us “Escape (The Pina Colada Song,” a monster smash in 1979, and the cannibal anthem “Timothy” in 1971, the choice might not seem appropriate on the surface. But Holmes’ unheralded work for Barbara Streisand and the Broadway musical Drood actually makes him a perfect choice to oversee this project. “Miss Pamela” has wonderful Randy Roos guitars blending with Rick Kinscherf’s pretty keyboards, keyboards that could have inspired Billy Joel, sounding very much like his 1978 hit “Just The Way You Are.” It’s when Kinscherf’s expressive vocal kicks in that all comparisons to traditional pop go out the window. The cover of the Adler/Ross classic (you gotta have) “Heart” is a standout here, as it was in their live show. Seven of the nine tracks are penned by Rick Kinscherf, and themes that resound in “Fay Wray” (the heroine from the epic King Kong) travel throughout the artist’s career. This album may be tough for some to take, but the Tom Werman liner notes put things in a nice perspective. They opened for Roxy Music in Boston when this album was released, and were even more avant-garde than the legendary headliner. The band dropped the “Orchestra” from their name and became the original Luna, releasing a 45, “Hollywood,” while the rest of their album was held up in litigation. They re-emerged as Berlin Airlift, then Rick Berlin: The Movie. In 2001, the former Rick Kinscherf, known as Rick Berlin, fronted the Shelley Winters Project. That sound has little in common with the early pictures painted by the exquisite “Love Is Not Enough” or musically bizarre “Boy Scouts” off this album (“Back in the boy scout camp/the moon was very full”). These themes, like the references and inspiration from films, continued to flavor Berlin’s music through the years, although the Peter Barrett narrations would fall away. Moody and impressive in its gamble, this is also noteworthy in that guitarist extraordinaire Randy Roos can be heard in his formative years. ~ Joe Viglione

A virtuoso on the trumpet, Al Hirt was often “overqualified” for the Dixieland and pop music that he performed. He studied classical trumpet at the Cincinnati Conservatory (1940-1943) and was influenced by the playing of Harry James. He freelanced in swing bands (including both Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and Ray McKinley) before returning to New Orleans in the late ’40s and becoming involved in the Dixieland movement. He teamed up with clarinetist Pete Fountain on an occasional basis from 1955 on, and became famous by the end of the decade. An outstanding technician with a wide range, along with a propensity for playing far too many notes, Hirt had some instrumental pop hits in the 1960s. He also recorded swing and country music, but mostly stuck to Dixieland in his live performances. He remained a household name throughout his career, although one often feels that he could have done so much more with his talent. Hirt’s early Audiofidelity recordings (1958-1960) and collaborations with Fountain are the most rewarding of his long career; he died at his home in New Orleans on April 27, 1999. –Artist Biography by Scott Yanow

French indie pop band Phoenix returns after a four-year absence with Ti Amo, inspired by and intended to conjure up images of summer and Italian discos. The lead single J-Boy built up anticipation for the album, further fuelled by the second single and title track, described as “buoyant” by Rolling Stone.

Billboard 200 – #42, 2017

“… (the title track is) buoyant … following the glitchy, electro-pop single J-Boy, on Ti Amo singer Thomas Mars professes his love in multiple languages above a pulsing, dance-y beat …”
– Rolling Stone

“… (the title track) has a harder edge compared to the shimmery J-Boy … there’s a hooky, repetitive chorus … and a head-snapping disco breakbeat which would make Daft Punk proud.”
– Consequence of Sound
