“Everyday Life, Everyday People” is the ninth album of the Californian group Slightly Stoopid, who recreate the relaxed sound of the West Coast with their mix of folk, reggae, hip-hop, funk and punk. Slightly Stoopid formed in the mid-1990s starting to release punk-tinged and surf-inspired albums. 2005s Closer To The Sun (2005) broadened their musical palette further and featured collaborations with reggae artists such as Barrington Levy and Scientist, before 2007s Chronchitis provided their first Billboard hit album (no. 55 debut, no. 2 indie chart).

The groups star has continued to rise, including Top Of The World (2012) debuting the US charts at #13.On the live front, Slightly Stoopid has toured frequently ever since its inception, including appearances at US festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and New Orleans Jazz Fest. Their first headlining tour of amphitheatres in 2008 saw them joined by Sly & Robbie, while their Blazed & Confused tour a year later was a co-headlining affair with Snoop Dogg.

Now into their third decade of making music, Slightly Stoopid continues to mine an energising and multifaceted sound that has been described as a spiritual bath of positive party energy.

In the last years, STABIL ELITE from Düsseldorf have created a cosmos of driving bass lines, danceable rhythms, floating pads and shimmering electric guitars. Using repetitive lyrics with double meanings, analogue synths and icy cold clackering computers, Lucas Croon, Nikolai Szymanski and Martin Sonnensberger revive Krautrock and the avant-garde moments of the German New Wave. They combine glamor and emotion and cosmic transcendence, which is well aware of its musical heritage, yet does not seem overly reflective for even a second. One can immediately hear where this stylish band comes from. Just think of that city Düsseldorf on the Rhine, which has become a work of art in itself, and its electronic musical history, which has significantly influenced many styles, from hip-hop to techno.

Stanley Myers, who got his start in television with such series as Z-Cars and Doctor Who, was a fairly prolific and highly versatile composer who could score gentle classic moods as easily as rousing action sequences. He is perhaps best known for his music for The Deer Hunter, particularly the moving “Cavatina” (which has been repeatedly covered), but he is also notable for scoring a series of films directed by Nicholas Roeg, with the score album for Insignificance being very much in demand since its release.

Stanley Myers has a very unique way of scoring a movie (see ‘Kaleidescope’ for example). Otley is no exception. The album is a mix of instrumental tracks in an uptempo 1960s easy-pop style, baroque strings, dialogue and vocal numbers. One for lovers of easy listening, Sound Gallery-style music, and strange soundtracks.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 44:48 minutes | 427 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © ECM

Eight years separate 1993’s The Fall Of Us All and A Man About A Horse, during which time Steve Tibbetts met with an accident that required him to have surgery on his right hand. Before the procedure, the story goes, the reclusive Minnesotan laid down all the guitar parts for A Man About A Horse in his home studio, thus leaving a skeleton as solid as his was uncertain. This apocryphal information matters little, however, once “Lupra” reaches its hands, zombie-like, from the soil. The tap of tabla and twang of acoustic guitar engage in intimate conversation, seeming to diagram hitherto unheard regions of the guitarist’s postmodern terrains. The continental drift of his sound is as tectonically aware as ever: sparkling, sure, and ceremonially poignant like the flames on the album’s cover. This teetering session indeed holds on its kindling shoulders a giant cauldron, in which the listener becomes like the fabled frog, unaware of the lethal heat flowering around him. Spirits beckon from behind the beams of the “Red Temple,” wherein slumber the relics of a nameless saint: the faintest sliver of fingernail, a baby’s-breath of hair…each the element of an alchemy that can only be taught through sound. “Black Temple” magnifies the possibility of transformation by polishing its sole crucible to an ember’s glow. Whether in the earthen percussion or transcendent sustains, echoes of The Fall Of Us All permeate every decorated wall, if in a more contemplative mode.

The ambience intensifies in “Burning Temple,” neither exploding nor imploding but shining like a distant sun in search of a planet. The weight of feet sifting through the crumble leaves tracks and trails, and it is over these Tibbetts and his band trace their peace-bringing hands. The scene is crystal clear, as the title of “Glass Everywhere” would seem to imply. The destruction wrought upon the site is internal, and it is along this emotional landscape that the herds of the musicians’ imagination run like the buffalo. The search for reasons continues, forever one step behind the answers. But there is no charity anywhere in the world to mend the damage done. Rather, the music itself becomes the mechanism by which this assemblage coheres into offering. By now, the heat has become so strong that our little frog legs can no longer kick for all the shock. The raw becomes the cooked: a point of no return.

A way out reveals itself in the twisted metal of “Lochana,” in which an electric guitar cries with all the ache of the prairie. A glass eye in the face of “Chandoha” acts as telescope into the private fears that lurk in the backdrop. The air abounds with fragrance, the guitar a match touched to incense. All of which presses “Koshala” into a diamond of such finality that it’s all Tibbetts can do to keep up with its fluttering heart. The delicacy of tabla and sweeping accents of guitar paint an adobe-hued theory of existence at large. With the very landscape as its brush, it emotes in global self-portraits of light. Here emerges a lone sojourner, one who ranges like the Gunslinger of Stephen King’s Dark Tower, unaware of the tangled web of bodies in which he is destined to be enmeshed. And really, destination is something we can always count on in the Tibbetts experience, for we are there the moment we take our first step.

Georgian/Swiss pianist Tamar Beraia was born in Tbilisi (Georgia) into a family of musicians. She received most of her training in Georgia: first piano lessons from her mother at the age of five, then continuing with Dodo Tsintsadze at the Z. Paliashvili Central Music School, and with Nana Khubutia at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire. She completed her studies with Ivan Klánský in Lucerne. She is a prizewinner of many national and international competitions, including the Third Prize ex-aequo, the Bronze Medal, and the Sony Audience Prize at the Seventeenth Paloma O‘Shea Santander International Piano Competition. During her studies she was supported by various scholarships, including those awarded by the M. Tariverdiev Foundation and the eminent pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja. With her sister Natia Beraia, she plays duo since childhood, both in four-hand and twopiano repertoire. In February 2014, Tamar’s debut CD Portrait was released on the EaSonus label. Since 2015, Tamar Beraia has been supported by the Bayer AG firm’s cultural department within the framework of their stART programme. Engagements include recitals at the Philharmonie de Luxembourg and at Wigmore Hall, as well as performances at festivals and with orchestras in Austria, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, France, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and Ukraine.

It is an enormous pleasure for me to introduce my second solo CD album, featuring works by Beethoven and Liszt. These two composers have exerted a strong influence on me throughout my life and played a paramount role in forming me as a musician. I could be wild and unlimited in expression in Liszt, sincere and firm when playing Beethoven. The two, in tandem, always helped me convey my complex individuality.

I was 17 years old when I experienced my first encounter with the most sublime works these two composers ever wrote. Beethoven‘s Hammerklavier Sonata in B flat Major, Op. 106 and Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor introduced me to new worlds of imagination, sounds, forms, and shapes. I was riveted by their intensity of expression, by the contrasts and the poetry they contain. It felt like diving beneath the surface of the ocean to discover a completely different universe with new colours, shapes and unusual movements, or like being catapulted to the cosmos, surrounded by infinite space and time, exposed to the wonder and mystery of the Universe…. (Liner notes by Tamar Bereia)

It’s on a big Fazioli piano, recorded in a public concert in 2017, that Vadym Kholodenko – gold medallist at the prestigious Van Cliburn Competiton – offers us a journey through the fascinating, sometimes unsettling, always vivid, world of Scriabin. The programme follows the compositions in chronological order: we start with some harmonically almost “well-behaved” works, which still bear the marks of Chopin and Rachmaninov, moving gradually towards total liberation from any audible tonality in the form of Vers la flamme from 1914 – one of Scriabin’s last pieces – a hair-raising firework display on the piano in the form of an inexorable, almost orgasmic, crescendo. Between these two poles, Kholodenko offers several series of Preludes and Études, two Sonatas – the 4th from 1903 and the 5th from 1907, representing the transition in the composer’s style – and isolated piece with evocative titles such as the Poème tragiqueand the Poème satanique. It’s a fine journey, at the end of which the listener will feel both full and emptied-out!

Valery Afanassiev on “WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART” Today we are too fond of clear-cut solutions and exhaustive explanations. Writers and film directors are supposed to shed light even on those nooks and crannies which should remain dark for the sake of perspective. And readers as well as cinema goers should remain in the dark about this and that for the sake of the same perspective, the same space, the same labyrinth. Alas, there are no more dark ladies either in sonnets or in novels. We have forgotten the aroma of unanswerable questions. And yet every masterpiece is an unanswerable question. And so is every artist of genius. In Pushkin’s short tragedy Mozart and Salieri there are many unanswerable questions. Actually it ends with such a question: ‘Is an evil deed compatible with genius?’ (Gesualdo, who was unquestionably a composer of genius, killed his wife. But does this murder answer the question?) In the opening monologue Salieri ruminates over his music-oriented life and asks a crucial question: ‘Why would God choose an obscene child to be his instrument?’ That is how Peter Shäffer formulates the same question in Amadeus. Was Mozart an obscene child? Why should God have chosen Salieri in preference to Mozart? Salieri was an honest, hardworking musician: neither Pushkin nor Shäffer deny him that. What is more, his musical erudition did not prevent him from relishing Mozart’s masterpieces with every fibre of his being (with every fibre of his soul, as the Russians would say)—a rare, priceless gift. At the end of Pushkin’s tragedy Mozart says that if everyone could feel harmony as Salieri does, the world might come to an end, no one caring about the base needs of life, everyone luxuriating in art. What a pity the world will never come to an end through art. As a matter of fact, to paraphrase T. S. Eliot, such an end might turn out to be a magnificent beginning.

The virtuosic performance of Vienna Bach Consort conducted by its genius maestro Ruben Dubrovsky at Vienna’s St. Stephan’s Cathedral will carry its audience along to original sound impressions of Vivaldi’s time. The magnificent setting of St. Stephan’s Cathedral and the artistic peak of orchestra and conductor will be enhanced by the appearance of the adorable Vivica Genaux. The US-mezzosoprano is famous for her extraordinary interpretation of baroque repertoire. This concert captivates with its exceptional relation of sacral music and acoustic impressions. Vienna Bach Consort featuring mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux, conducted by Ruben Dubrovsky: an exceptional music experience!

The great American mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux returns here in an album given over to Vivaldi’s religious works, a repertoire in which she excels superbly. There are in fact no fewer than 28 roles in the baroque realm which she performs with a joyful virtuosity, which never borders on the hysteria we see in some of her peers’ performances.

Recorded at Vienna’s Stephansdom in 2015, with the excellent Bach Consort Wien conducted by its Argentine founder Rubén Dubrovsky, this Hommage à Vivaldi offers up religious works of great expressive power, alternating between pieces as different as the motets In turbato mare irato and Sum in medio tempestatum, and the ambitious setting-to-music of the famous psalm Nisi Dominus. Here, we discover an inspired Vivaldi in his lesser-known works, such as the poignant Kyrie in G Minor with his daring chromatisms or the Credo in E Minor and its finely-sculpted instrumentation.

With a supple, warm voice, Vivica Genaux tackles melismas in Vivaldi’s phrases with an unsettling ease, and brings a consummate art to ornamentations and “coloraturas which seem to be born from the wind”, in the delightful phrase of a music critic in the German weekly Die Zeit. The Bach Consort Wien accompanies these holy works with the contagious joy that reigned in the happy-go-lucky Vienna of the 18th century, when operatic theatres were as numerous as churches.  – François Hudry

All the themes from all of Beethoven’s symphonies, played live by an orchestra, concentrated into one hour and supplemented with electronics – that’s “Nine in One”. Or: a wild rollercoaster ride through the twists and turns of Ludwig van Beethoven’s brain. In the front carriage: Wolfgang Mitterer. He has a reputation, as a musician many’s the time he’s tormented the big concert organs of the continent, as well as composing for important orchestras, ensembles and opera houses, rocking it in jazz clubs or writing film music in his studio in Vienna. Off we go! Radial acceleration. Centrifugal force. Looping. The whole programme. And then what makes riding the rollercoaster so much fun suddenly happens: we can’t feel our own mass anymore, and we experience a moment of weight- lessness. A similar condition may also appear after listening to this album. But what’s certain is that from this point onwards, you hear the ‘New Testament of Music’, as Beethoven’s symphonies are also known, in a completely new way.

Wellington psychedelic trio Womb (aka Charlotte Forrester, Haz Forrester, and Georgette Brown) have unveiled their long-awaited debut album Like Splitting the Head From the Body, following a sterling run of powerful live shows and mind-expanding singles. The eight-song collection leads listeners on a journey from gorgeously recorded alt-folk soundscapes to the outer boundaries of dream-pop, with epic feelings of grandeur evident throughout. Swirling synthesisers intersect with tenderly plucked guitars and otherworldly singing, creating oceans of sound for minds to lose themselves inside. An accompanying essay by writer Xavier Ellah describes the record as exploring “the relational question of, what does it mean to be a body, connected to and derived from other bodies – human or not?” It’s an assured step forward from Womb, dive deep into Like Splitting the Head From the Body and catch them on tour at the following locations…

YES mark their 50th anniversary this year and release YES: THE STEVEN WILSON REMIXES which spotlights five studio albums that helped secure the band’s recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

YES: THE STEVEN WILSON REMIXES will be available on 29th June as a five album set. It includes remixed versions of: The Yes Album (1971), Fragile (1971), Close To The Edge (1972), the double album Tales From Topographic Oceans (1973), and Relayer (1974). Each album features remixed audio by Steven Wilson, released on vinyl for the first time.

After their initial release in the 1970’s, Wilson’s articulate remix shines a light on the stellar performances that run deep through each of these the albums, from hits like “Roundabout” and “I’ve Seen All Good People,” to album-side length epics like “Close To The Edge” and “The Gates Of Delirium.”

The music included in this collection confirms the band’s standing as the most enduring, ambitious, and virtuosic progressive band in rock history. It also follows the band through a number of personnel changes. Starting in February 1971 with YES’s third studio release, The Yes Album, the band featured vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Tony Kaye and drummer Bill Bruford. Released just nine months later, Fragile was YES’s first release with keyboardist Rick Wakeman. The same line-up returned on 1972’s Close To The Edge. A year later, drummer Alan White made his YES debut on Tales From Topographic Oceans. And finally, keyboardist Patrick Moraz joined for Relayer in 1974.

The set features Steven Wilson stereo remixes of the following albums:

If you are unfamiliar with the NFO sound, these Swedes cherish a decade in musical history between about 1975 and 1985. It is impossible to avoid that they are intentionally derivative, proudly brandishing their classic rock influences such that half of the fun is identifying which band inspired particular parts. For my year-end summary of Amber Galactic, I noted Toto, Van Halen, Billy Joel, Steely Dan, Journey and Whitesnake. These same bands are still in the melting pot but SWAE is definitely less heavy and guitar-driven than previously. The guitars, while good, are moved another row further back in the bus, while the keyboards move forwards yet again. It is disingenuous to call it ‘disco’ as I’ve seen it described in our internal channels, but I also appreciate that NFO stray ever-further from their metal-oriented day jobs2. To demonstrate this point, two additional bands can be thrown into the pot: ABBA and the Bee Gees, both of whom can be heard on the more disco-heavy tracks, such as “Paralyzed,” “Pretty Thing Closing In” and “Winged and Serpentine.”

But what is it that means your should curtail your concerns? What is it that has always made NFO such a success? The songs, the songs, the songs. It still staggers me that the same individuals who can write such bland melodeath can also write such incredibly catchy tunes for this project. As enjoyable as SWAE is across its duration, it is usual for a few tracks to rise to the top and that holds true here. “Turn to Miami” and the title track are pure 80s pop-rock magic with huge choruses that show off the talented backup singers that the band now employs. I have read “Moments of Thunder” compared with the finale to the opening act of musical theatre which is apt; it’s bombastic and over-the-top, even by NFO‘s ridiculous standards. And “Lovers in the Rain” is the obligatory ballad which wrings our every ounce of melodrama from its emotive guitar lines and soppy lyrics. While it isn’t as awesome as its equivalents from Internal Affairs and Skyline Whispers, I also want to mention the long-form closer called “The Last of the Independent Romantics” with its moodier introduction, great riffs in its second passage and relative complexity in its second half. I enjoy when these guys stretch their song-writing a little and was disappointed by the effort from Amber Galactic.

And another one: the 45879th garage group! One of the outfits that spent more than half the year on the stages of obscure clubs across the US… But the first album from this 45879th band, named “Nude Party”, was produced by Oakley Munson, drummer with the Black Lips is well worth a listen… This was a group of students slouching on the benches of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, who suddenly perked up when they plugged in their amps. Six aficionados of Sixties rock who never tried to reinvent the wheel, but rather to revive and expound the ancient laws of rock with their scarcely-distorted guitars, prehistoric rhythms and vintage organ… And, as they’re still alive to the world around them, Patton Magee, Austin Brose, Connor Mikita, Alec Castillo, Shaun Couture and Don Merrill have never been afraid to add a little psychedelic pop or country rock here or there. The Nude Party jukebox has also got a bit of Modern Lovers, Velvet Underground and early Stones, Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd and the Flying Burrito Brothers, along with a thousand other legends from the previous century. This is sure to delight fans of Black Angels, Ron Gallo, Growlers, Strange Boys and the Allah-Las…  – Marc Zisman
