Danish sax-man, Michael Lington is releasing “Silver Lining”, his 10th solo album, the follow up to 2016’s critically acclaimed “Second Nature”. The album features mostly original compositions by Lington and producer/co-arranger/keyboardist Barry Eastmond, as well as a pair of stunning, choice covers. Joining him in the venture is an all-star cast of performers including Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame, Funk Brothers original Jack Ashford, Paul Jackson Jr., Ray Parker Jr., Alex Al, Freddie Washington, Lenny Castro and soul legend William Bell for a body of work that will be essential listening for all those who like their smooth jazz spiced with a modicum of soul.

‘Silver Lining’ is quickly up and running with ‘City Life’, the first of nine original Lington – Eastmond compositions. This down and dirty number has the added soul power of a brassy backing track, great guitar from Dave Stewart and is without doubt one of the albums top tunes. Another is the easy grooving ‘Jaywalking’ that features Paul Jackson Jr. on guitar while in similar vein is the foot tapping title cut where Jackson Jr. again lends a hand. Elsewhere Lington shows off his jazzy credentials with ‘Break the Ice’ and, although ‘Déjà vu’ proves to be a slice of groove drenched contemporary jazz, when he notches down the tempo the result is the lilting, jazzy swing of ‘Swingin’ On Main Street’. He keeps things relaxed for the heartfelt ‘Can’t Say Goodbye’ but it is with ‘Straight To The Top’ that, complete with great work on keys from Eastmond, he really finds mid tempo magic. Lington even fits in two excellently crafted covers, the first being a cool take on the Curtis Mayfield classic ‘People Get Ready’ for which William Bell does an outstanding job on vocals. Equally good is Lington’s re-imaging of the Tower Of Power blockbuster ‘So Very Hard To Go’ where Dorian Holley knocks the vocal right out of the park yet when the spotlight returns to Lington’s own music he teams with Ray Parker Jr. for the appropriately titled ‘M-Funk’ where high octane smooth jazz melds with funk in the most sensational of ways.

“Jazz blossoms with deep roots” is how the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper summarised a concert appearance of Natalia Mateo. The title of her second album “De Profundis”, Latin for “out of the depths”, sets the tone: subtle, knowing songs mark out paths that are Mateo’s and hers alone. Thoughtful, original compositions and highly personal interpretations of covers reflect her story set against a backdrop of East and West, a life punctuated by changes of surroundings, by departures which lead to fresh beginnings.

The material on De Profundis has a three-fold inspiration: Poland, her country of birth, with its natural closeness to Slavic traditions, the international influences of her adopted home city of Berlin and finally, unconventional artists from music, literature and fine art, free spirits such as Joni Mitchell, Maya Angelou and Louise Bourgeois. There is courage and consistency in the way Mateo follows her intuition and finds her own expressive strength. She combines facets of jazz, Polish folk and the singer-songwriter tradition with her affecting intensity in a mesmerizing kaleidoscope.

Recorded July 7th and 8th, 1964, this is quite simply one of the finest soul performances ever captured on tape. Cooke’s golden croon is as versatile and nuanced an instrument as any saxophone or guitar, careening through rapid scalar passages, mournful cries and delicate vibrato. The recording, available for the first time in high res 88.2kHz/24bit, is absolutely astounding – every horn is audible, every drum hit startlingly crisp. This is less a record than it is a supremely recorded all-encompassing experience. An absolutely essential addition to any audiophile collection (or music collection in general), Sam Cooke at the Copa is a document of one of the greatest soul vocalists of all time delivering a once-in-a-lifetime performance.

For decades, Sam Cooke at the Copa was a frustrating record. One of a handful of live albums by any major soul artist of its era, it captured Cooke in excellent voice, and was well-recorded — it just wasn’t really a “soul” album, except perhaps in the tamest possible definition of that term. Playing to an upscale, largely white supper-club audience, in a very conservatively run venue where he had previously failed to impress either patrons or the management, Cooke toned down his performance and chose the safest material with which he could still be comfortable. In place of songs like “Feel It,” “Bring It On Home to Me,” or even “Cupid,” which were part of his usual set, he performed numbers like “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” “Bill Bailey,” and “When I Fall in Love” here. True, his renditions may be the versions of any of those songs that any R&B fan will like best, but they always seemed a poor substitute for what’s not here — not just the songs that he didn’t do, but the intense, sweaty presentation, as much a sermon as a concert, the pounding beat, and the crowd being driven into ever-more frenzied delight. All of that is missing, and for decades fans had to content themselves with the contradiction of a beautifully executed live album featuring what might best be called “Sam Cooke lite” — the release of Live at the Harlem Square Club solved that problem, giving us a real Sam Cooke concert, and one of the great soul albums of all time. In the wake of the latter’s release, Sam Cooke at the Copa became much more valuable as a representative of that other side of Cooke’s sound and career — juxtaposed with “Twistin’ the Night Away” were “Frankie and Johnny,” “Try a Little Tenderness,” “Tennessee Waltz,” “This Little Light of Mine” and his performance of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” (the song that inspired his own “A Change Is Gonna Come”), most of which, if he’d done his usual set, most likely wouldn’t exist today in concert versions. By itself, this is still not a representative album, but paired with Live at the Harlem Square Club, it is an irreplaceable document. In June of 2003, Sam Cooke at the Copa was reissued in a brilliant sounding hybrid CD/Super-Audio CD that runs circles around all prior editions of the record.

From his teenage debut as a full fledged member of the legendary Soul Stirrers in 1951 through his career as a rhythm and blues phenomenon, Sam Cooke is acknowledged as the progenitor of soul music. His hit songs, most of which he wrote, went on to become pop standards, enduring to this day. Sam Cooke’s amazing body of work is now encapsulated in Sam Cooke: Portrait of A Legend:1951-1964. It includes 30 tracks and is part of ABKCO’s Sam Cooke Remastered Collection, an initiative to offer state of the art editions of restored and remastered. The songs included into Portrait Of A Legend collectively logged 273 weeks or five years and three months on Billboard’s Pop Chart and a mind boggling 508 weeks (nine years and nine months) on the Pop and R&B charts, combined.

Some 46 years after his first pop hit, and 39 years after his death, comes only the second attempt at a comprehensive Sam Cooke collection. Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 eclipses RCA’s early-’80s The Man and His Music, going it better in running time but losing some important recordings — “That’s Heaven to Me” and “Soothe Me,” arguably one of Cooke’s most important songs — in the process of summing up his career. From 1951’s Soul Stirrers’ gospel classic “Touch the Hem of His Garment” through to 1964’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “Shake,” we get highlights of Cooke’s career presented in state-of-the-art digital audio; superior in every way possible to the audio quality of The Man and His Music. What’s more, this is a hybrid disc with SACD capability, and the sound on that layer is almost as much of a jump above the quality on the CD layer as this remastering is from the old The Man and His Music disc; and either the standard CD or the SACD playback makes that 1980s-issued compilation sound faint and anemic. There’s also annotation here — which was totally lacking on the earlier CD — by Peter Guralnick, which delves very effectively into the background of each song. And the producers have taken the trouble to be a little inventive in the programming — it would have been easy enough to follow a strict chronological approach, but instead the disc opens and closes with tracks that reveal Cooke’s gospel roots, which is pretty much where his music started and where it ended up, bookending his first hit with songs from his first session ever.

Belgian singer/songwriter blends soul, hip-hop, funk, and reggae into a heady mix that brings to mind Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and Adele.

Announced by the eponymous single, Reason was beginning to expect. Belgian singer released the second album from funk and soul, crystalline guitars, dynamic beats and intimate ballads. Princess Queen Lauryn Hill Selah Sue loudly claimed his personality. The omnipresence of his voice even dazzles us more than the maturity of his songs made law. Talking Heads’ 7th studio album featured one of the band’s biggest hits, “Wild Wild Life” and showcased the group’s signature quirkiness. The songs—-originally written for the David Byrne-directed film True Stories—-incorporate funk, Cajun music, folk and country for a sound as energetic and unique as the band’s best work.

Time hasn’t been kind to Talking Heads’ ancillary soundtrack to David Byrne’s oddball directorial debut. Though it generated one of the band’s biggest radio hits (“Wild Wild Life”), both the film and its songs were dismissed as self-consciously quirky retreads of other, better material; and it’s well-known the quartet was beginning to splinter apart around the time of the sessions. Byrne himself has said that he regretted the whole notion of releasing True Stories with his own vocals, a decision made at the behest of the film’s financial backers: All along, he intended for the lyrics to be sung, in character, by Pops Staples, John Goodman, and the rest of the cast. (Some of these alternate-vocal versions were eventually released as B-sides.) Despite its perfunctory nature, however, True Stories is not without its charms. Though an obvious swipe at consumerism, “Love for Sale” boasts one of the band’s best hooks, and it’s easily their hardest-rocking tune since the Fear of Music days. “Radio Head” is a successful continuation of some of the regional-American motifs Byrne explored on Little Creatures (and bears the distinction of inspiring Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and company to name their band after it). Free from the movie’s weird patina of irony, “Dream Operator” is one of the most affecting tunes Talking Heads ever recorded; the closing-credits theme “City of Dreams” is similarly touching. Elsewhere, there is filler – touching upon gospel, country-western, zydeco, and sundry other Byrne influences – but the band’s skill at arranging an album and maintaining a mood remains intact. So while True Stories may remain a regrettable chapter in the band’s history, it’s certainly not an embarrassing one.

Todd Rundgren, founding member of the late 60’s Philly rockers Nazz, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter & producer, released his 1978 masterpiece “Hermit Of Mink Hollow” during his years in Woodstock, NY. The album includes the hit “Can We Still Be Friends?” (covered a year later by Robert Palmer) which reached #29 in the U.S. and helped make the album Rundgren’s 2nd best seller of his career. This is simplistic pop stylings at its finest.

Over the course of 1977, Todd Rundgren moved Utopia toward a more pop-oriented direction, winding up with the slick mainstream arena rock of Oops! Wrong Planet. With that in mind, it makes sense that The Hermit of Mink Hollow – his first full-fledged solo album since Initiation, if you discount the half-cover/half-original Faithful – finds Rundgren in his pop craftsman persona. The difference is, he’s heartbroken. His relationship with Bebe Buell collapsed during 1977 and it’s clear that the separation has pained him, since pain and melancholy underpin the album, whether it’s on ballads (“Can We Still Be Friends”) or on apparently joyous revelries, like “All the Children Sing.” That said, this is a Rundgren solo album and he has not abandoned his trademarks, which means that the lush ballads are paired with novelties (“Onomatopoeia,” which sounds exactly how you hope it does), ersatz soul (“You Cried Wolf”), and pure pop (“Hurting for You”). Hermit is also the first record Rundgren recorded completely alone since Something/Anything? Where that record sounded like the inner workings of a madman, with each song providing no indication what the next would sound like, Hermit is more cohesive. It also feels less brilliant, even if it is, in many ways, nearly as excellent as Rundgren’s masterwork, mainly because it doesn’t have such a wide scope. Still, the reason The Hermit of Mink Hollow is such a milestone in Rundgren’s career is because it’s a small album, filled with details, and easily the most emotional record he made.

“The Italian Smooth Jazz All-Starz” is, as the title suggests it might be, a seventeen-track compilation of some of the best Italian contemporary jazz around. It is a really top notch collection which includes fabulous tracks such as Renato Falaschi’s ‘Following My Soul’ and ‘Top Down’ by Gianni Vancini that are both right up there with the best that Alfa’s release has to offer.

Make no mistake, ‘The Italian Smooth Jazz All-Starz’ is one of those albums that is bursting with standout tracks and very much in this category is ‘Times Square’ from Urban T that checks every smooth jazz box imaginable.

Elsewhere, the mid tempo groove of ‘Unlimited’ from the Smooth Operator Project proves to be a total joy while the hard driving ‘Swagger’ showcases the unmistakable sound of sax-man Rocco Ventrella. Other featured artists include Amedeo Bianchi, Giò Lombardi, Marcello Sutera, Lorenzo Definti, Maurizio Grondona Group, Da Nu Jazz 4et, Danilo Riccardi, Piero del Prete, Carlo Micheli, and Angelo Trane while some of the genre’s best session men, Eric Marienthal, Gary Novak, Ricky Lawson, Greg Manning, Alex Al, André Berry, Darryl Williams, Gorden Campbell, are variously around to lend a hand. All things considered this is Smooth Jazz “Made in Italy” at is very best.

“Swan Lake was the first of Tchaikovsky’s three great ballets– works which added a new level of depth and sophistication to what had been a purely superficial art form. Today the music is so well-known and popular that it’s impossible to comprehend the difficulties the composer experienced at early performances. Audiences found the music “too symphonic,” and the dancers were put off by the prominence given to the orchestra which, they felt, distracted ballet fans from the action on stage. Of course, all of these supposed “defects” are precisely what we admire about the music today, and this elegant but exciting performance reveals the music in all of its glory. ” (David Hurwitz)

The world-premiere recording of choral and instrumental music by the long-neglected Christopher Gibbons, second son of the famous Orlando. Featuring the Choir of the AAM (who make their recording debut), this disc surveys the broad expressive palette of a composer who provides the “missing link between the pre-Commonwealth world of William Lawes and the Restoration baroquerie of Henry Purcell”.

Born into an English musical family, organist and composer Christopher Gibbons (1615-1676) probably received early training from his famous father Orlando Gibbons. He sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal and went on to a distinguished career at Westminster Abbey and in the court of Charles II. With this showcase programme of motets, anthems, fantasias for strings, and organ voluntaries (all of which are receiving their first recording), Richard Egarr, the Academy of Ancient Music and the Choir of the AAM, aim to rescue the composer from unjust obscurity.

“We owe Egarr our thanks for this sampler – a selection of gently expressive choral anthems, organ works and instrumental fantasias that establish him as a far-from-negligible precursor of Blow and Purcell.” (Financial Times)

“Perhaps the most distinctive of all is the keyboard music…And it’s here also that Egarr’s musicianship is at its most compelling…the choir and vocalists give the impression of being a pick-up ensemble that hasn’t quite gelled…Don’t let that put you off, however: the monographic approach tends to expose composers of lesser substance but Gibbons junior passes the test admirably.” (Gramophone Magazine)

“Egarr has put together a rather charming musical portrait of Gibbons junior…with Frescobaldian flair, Egarr makes the most of the four substantial pieces he plays here…A chip off the old block, certainly, and no mere splinter either. A real discovery and an exceptionally rewarding recording.” (International Record Review)

If you think you don’t know Darlene Love, think again. The iconic voice behind many of Phil Spector’s biggest hits such as He’s A Rebel, Why Do lover’s Break Each Other’s Hearts and the Christmas favourite, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) has stepped into her own spotlight with Introducing Darlene Love.

With help from a slew of superstar friends such as Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and Linda Perry on writing duties , the ground work is perfectly laid for Darlene’s powerhouse vocals to shine.

Darlene Love has one of the strongest and most immediately recognizable voices in the history of pop and rock music, but she’s never been much of a star on her own; Love’s most memorable moments were as part of Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound crew, where she sang as part of the Crystals and Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, as well as cutting a few tracks under her own name and delivering the epochal version of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on Spector’s legendary Christmas album. Love has always had the talent to be a frontwoman, but fate seemed to have other ideas, and none of Love’s solo albums caught the ear of the larger public, despite her enduring talent. Superfan Steven Van Zandt, longtime member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, decided it was high time someone did something about that, especially after Love’s appearance in the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, and Van Zandt is the producer and idea man behind Introducing Darlene Love, a grand-scale album designed to give Love the glossy showcase she deserves. Van Zandt’s production, however, most often aims to emulate Spector’s widescreen singles of the ’60s, and as a consequence most of the songs on Introducing seem determined to move Love back into the past, despite the presence of fine new material from noted Love admirers Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Jett, Linda Perry, Jimmy Webb, and Van Zandt (whose “Among the Believers,” a passionate political number, is one of the few moments on this album that feels honestly contemporary). But if the album is sometimes too busy and big for its own good, Love triumphs over it all; she was in her mid-seventies when these tracks were recorded, but no one would ever guess, as she sounds as strong, passionate, and precise as she did when she was cutting those classic Crystals singles, and when she belts out “Forbidden Nights,” “Just Another Lonely Mile,” or “Who Under Heaven,” Introducing is truly a convincer, proving Darlene Love still holds the title of one of rock and R&B’s greatest vocalists. And the final two tracks, “Marvelous” and “Jesus Is the Rock (That Keeps Me Rollin’),” shows her gospel chops are as strong as (maybe even stronger than) her secular gifts. In short, Introducing Darlene Love doesn’t show off many new wrinkles of her talent, but if you want to know if Love still has what it takes to make a great record, this album shows the answer is an unambiguous “Absolutely!” ~ Mark Deming

Emtidi were a duo comprising the German Maik Hirschfeldt and the Canadian Dolly Holmes. Their first album was a low budget production, released in a very limited quantity on the minor Thorofon label. The music presented here was a somewhat ordinary kind of acoustic folk. Far more interesting and completely different was Emtidi’s classic second album Saat, made with a solid involvement from Dieter Dierks (engineer, bass, mellotron, percussion) in the Dierks Studio, Stommeln in February 1972. Here is a complete run-down of this absolutely essential album: “Walkin’ The Park” started side one – the first half of it was a quiet, lush folk song with treated acoustic guitars and electric piano, this running into a furious acid guitar solo. “Traume” was a nonsensical interlude with wordless vocals, floating keyboards, vibes and jew harp, while the long track “Touch The Sun” finished side one. For several minutes an electronically treated organ created a cosmic atmosphere similar to vintage Klaus Schulze or Ash Ra Tempel. Then the track developed into a beautiful folk ballad, which Holmes sang in her most angelic voice. “Love Time Rain”, opening side two, was a short folk-rock song recalling British groups like Fairport Convention or Steeleye Span. Tile title piece “Saat” was another acoustic showcase, but far more cosmic sounding than the previous track. The concluding track “Die Reise” was the only one with German lyrics, sung by Hirschfeldt. It could be argued that the energetic sections of this track ruined the relaxed atmosphere elsewhere on the album, but otherwise it was a great track.

“Saat is a little-known gem and Krautrock classic, an album full of dreamy and beautiful melodies. The Emtidi duo considerably expanded its instrumentation and style, and played a unique mix of folk, art rock, and psychedelic music. Besides acoustic guitar, the sound is mainly dominated by synthesizers, Mellotron, and other keyboard instruments, which are often played in a classical style. Some softly floating organ parts are comparable to early Tangerine Dream. In contrast stands a song like “Love Time Rain,” which could be written by the British folk band Pentangle. On most tracks, Dolly Holmes sings lead with her high, transfigured voice. Aside from “Die Reise,” a fairy tale story sung by Maik Hirschfeldt, all the songs have English lyrics. The album has a surprisingly full sound for a duo recording, although no drums were used. Most contemporary German bands played with new styles and sounds, but only a few obtained such wonderful music out of their experiments.” (Klaus Kehrle, AMG)

Katja Lindgren’s début presents a soothing, immersive and poetic study in underwater sonics for Berlin’s Hyperdelia.

It all feels less academic, more impressionistic and alien than other hydrophone recordings we’ve heard – basically not as stark as Thomas Köner or Jana Winderen, for example, but still focussed on similar dynamics, with addition of creepily processed, Cthulhu-like vocal groan and dreamlike monologues which perfuse the suite at opportune moments. One to swim in, especially fans of Felicia Atkinson, Chris Watson, AUDINT.

Francesco Antonio Bonporti (1672-1749) was a priest first and musician second: a ‘gentiluomo di Trento’ as he described himself on the title page of his Op.1 trio sonatas. Chamber music continued to be Bonporti’s preferred creative outlet, at a time when cantatas and increasingly operas obtained wider favour, and his increasingly strenuous attempts to gain royal or aristocratic preferment by dedicating and sending his works to kings, queens and princes proved ever fruitless: he died as he worked, a humble cleric.

Bonporti’s gifts as a composer only began to be fully appreciated a century ago, and he can now be regarded among the most gifted north Italian composers of his generation, his music even worthy at points of being mistaken for Bach’s, as it has been more than once in confused manuscript collections. The language of Corelli lies behind Bonporti’s idiom in these trio sonatas, but his creative imagination ranged far and wide, not indebted to any local or popular idiom but always sympathetically conceived for his instruments, and for the violin in particular. The slow movements are more developed than most contemporary Italian comparisons; at all points Bonporti’s imaginative harmony and lively part-writing can be enjoyed by any listener who is keen to look beyond the tried and tested trio sonata repertoire.

Founded in 2006, Associazione Labirinti Armonici is an early-music ensemble of flexible formation, led by scholarship and close study of manuscripts and critical editions in its revival of repertoire from the Baroque. Like Bonporti, the ensemble is based in the Trento region of Italy, making festival appearances and giving masterclasses in early music.

Francesco Bonporti (1672-1749) lived for the largest part of his life in Trento, his native town. He studied in Rome, and was influenced by Arcangelo Corelli, whose style of imitative counterpoint he invests with dramatic elements. His fame spread over Europe and the great Johann Sebastian Bach transcribed for harpsichord some of his violin sonatas.

The complete Sonatas for 2 Violins & B.C. Op. 2 consist of 4 dance movements, the allemande, corrente, sarabande and gigue or gavotte. The first violin is mainly predominant, the other two instruments usually providing the accompaniment. The faster movements require virtuoso skills from the performers while the slow movements flow in sensitive and slightly melancholy melodic lines. The Italian group Labirinti Armonici specializes in the performance of undiscovered Baroque music, it consists of two violins, cello and harpsichord/organ.

The final recording by legendary jazz fusion pioneers Larry Coryell and Alphonse Mouton in the reformed the Eleventh House in their all new album Seven Secrets which will be released on June 2nd. The late guitarist Coryell assembled founding members Randy Brecker (trumpet), long-timer John Lee (bass), the addition of son Julian (guitar) and the late Alphonse Mouzon (drums) to bring the rock and funk back to jazz again with a batch of eleven powerhouse tracks. The album is truly a group effort with Coryell relying on each member to contribute compositions to the new album (much like he did back in the 70 s).

“In January, he went into a studio in St. Augustine, Florida, and recorded a new Eleventh House project titled Seven Secrets (Savoy/429 Records) with charter members from 1973: Randy Brecker on trumpet and Alphonse Mouzon (1948 2016) on drums, along with John Lee (bassist on the group s 1975 album Level One and 1976 follow-up, Aspects) and Coryell s son Julian, a six-string shredder in his own right, on second guitar.

The results, which will be released in June, are electrifying. Fueled by Mouzon s big-as-a-house back-beats and power-precision fills, Daddy Coryell cuts loose with sheer abandon on several cuts, like his Mr. Miyake and Mouzon s kinetic 7/4 title track. Coryell deals in audacious string-bending on the blues-rocker The Dip and the earthy Mudhen Blues, and delivers some Wes Montgomery-style octaves on the mellow Having Second Thoughts.

But the real killer on Seven Secrets is Lee s Dragon s Way, a 6/8 romp that will whet the appetites of true fusion fans. Sparked by Mouzon s slamming groove and Lee s slippery, singing tones on his resounding Rob Allen fretless bass (with ebony fingerboard and nylon strings), this catchy number also showcases the young Julian s mondo chops, which are coming directly out of the Steve Vai Joe Satriani school. Papa Coryell follows those mind-blowing fusillades with something simple, lyrical, tasty and blue a typically Zen response from the guitar master.” (Downbeat)
