Following the cool reception to Insomniac, Green Day retreated from the spotlight for a year to rest and spend time with their families. During that extended break, they decided to not worry about their supposedly lost street credibility and make an album according to their instincts, which meant more experimentation and less of their trademark punk-pop. Of course, speedy, catchy punk is at the core of the group’s sound, so there are plenty of familiar moments on the resultant album, Nimrod, but there are also new details that make the record an invigorating, if occasionally frustrating, listen. Although punk-pop is Green Day’s forte, they sound the most alive on Nimrod when they’re breaking away from their formula, whether it’s the shuffling “Hitchin’ a Ride,” the bitchy, tongue-in-cheek humor of “The Grouch,” the surging surf instrumental “Last Ride In,” the punchy, horn-driven drag-queen saga “King for a Day,” or the acoustic, string-laced ballad “Good Riddance.” It’s only when the trio confines itself to three chords that it sounds tired, but Billie Joe has such a gift for hooky, instantly memorable melodies that even these moments are enjoyable, if unremarkable. Still, Nimrod suffers from being simply too much — although it clocks in at under 50 minutes, the 18 tracks whip by at such a breakneck speed that it leaves you somewhat dazed. With a little editing, Green Day’s growth would have been put in sharper relief, and Nimrod would have been the triumphant leap forward it set out to be. As it stands, it’s a muddled but intermittently exciting record that is full of promise.

Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Green Day will release Greatest Hits: God’s Favorite Band on 17th November. The album includes 20 hits spanning the band’s prolific 21 years as a band, plus a brand new song called “Back In The USA” and a new duet with award-winning Country Music superstar Miranda Lambert on “Ordinary World.” On 22nd March, God miraculously came down to the Ed Sullivan Theatre to introduce Green Day as “God’s Favorite Band” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. When God speaks people listen, and he granted Green Day the title: Greatest Hits: God’s Favorite Band. The collection chronicles the sonic journey of one of the most essential and dynamic rock bands in recent history. Formed in 1986 in Berkeley, CA, Green Day achieved breakout success with 1994’s Dookie which has sold over 10 million copies to date in the U.S. alone. Widely credited with popularizing and reviving mainstream interest in punk rock, Green Day would go on to release Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997), and Warning (2000). In 2004, Green Day released the rock opera American Idiot which captured the nation’s attention, hitting No 1 in the UK album chart. In 2010, a stage adaptation of American Idiot debuted on Broadway. The band went on to release the critically acclaimed 21st Century Breakdown (2009) and the album trilogy Green Day ¡Uno!, Green Day ¡Dos!, and Green Day ¡Tré (2012). In 2016 the band returned with Revolution Radio which again hit No1 in the UK album chart.

Dookie is American punk band Green Day’s third studio album. The record features popular tracks “Longview,” “When I Come Around,” “Basket Case” and more. Dookie made it to the number 2 spot on the Billobard 200 chart, won a 1995 Grammy award for Best Alternative Music Album, and is ranked in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest World Albums of All Time at number 193.

Green Day couldn’t have had a blockbuster without Nirvana, but Dookie wound up being nearly as revolutionary as Nevermind, sending a wave of imitators up the charts and setting the tone for the mainstream rock of the mid-’90s. Like Nevermind, this was accidental success, the sound of a promising underground group suddenly hitting its stride just as they got their first professional, big-budget, big-label production. Really, that’s where the similarities end, since if Nirvana were indebted to the weirdness of indie rock, Green Day were straight-ahead punk revivalists through and through. They were products of the underground pop scene kept alive by such protagonists as All, yet what they really loved was the original punk, particularly such British punkers as the Jam and Buzzcocks. On their first couple records, they showed promise, but with Dookie, they delivered a record that found Billie Joe Armstrong bursting into full flower as a songwriter, spitting out melodic ravers that could have comfortable sat alongside Singles Going Steady, but infused with an ironic self-loathing popularized by Nirvana, whose clean sound on Nevermind is also emulated here. Where Nirvana had weight, Green Day are deliberately adolescent here, treating nearly everything as joke and having as much fun as snotty punkers should. They demonstrate a bit of depth with “When I Come Around,” but that just varies the pace slightly, since the key to this is their flippant, infectious attitude — something they maintain throughout the record, making Dookie a stellar piece of modern punk that many tried to emulate but nobody bettered. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

“Flowers” is the third album by Swedish pop music group, Ace of Base. It was released in June 1998 in Europe, Asia, and Africa, and August 10 in the United Kingdom. An American version, titled “Cruel Summer”, was released on September 1 and contained remixes, re-recordings, and new recordings deemed appropriate for an American audience. Japan and Australia received hybrid versions of the two albums.

Flowers is the original version of Ace of Base’s third album, which in the U.S. became Cruel Summer. Flowers contains 14 tracks as opposed to Cruel Summer’s 12, some of which appear in alternate versions. For example, “Donnie,” a gem of a track which should have been a hit, is somewhat under-produced and unrealized on Flowers but truly shines on Cruel Summer, and other tracks, such as “He Decides,” also appear as earlier mixes on Flowers. “Life Is a Flower,” from Flowers, became “Whenever You’re Near Me” on Cruel Summer. Three tracks appear on Flowers that aren’t on Cruel Summer, and those are “Dr. Sun,” “I Pray,” and the melancholy “Captain Nemo,” while Cruel Summer’s ballad “Everytime It Rains” doesn’t appear on Flowers. Flowers also includes the song lyrics, which Cruel Summer lacks. Finally, the bonus mix of the single “Cruel Summer” is arguably superior on Flowers than on Cruel Summer. In the long run, however, the production on Cruel Summer is meatier than on Flowers.

They say the night conceals many stories. China Moses is the narrator of the night; her album “Nightintale” shines a fascinating light on her journey through night time’s terrain. She conjures up images and moods with her warm, astonishingly flexible alto voice, as figures and places take shape in the listener’s imagination. Eleven expressive songs recount the intoxication of love (Hang Over) and its bitter ending (Whatever), of vices (Nicotine) and passions (Put It On The Line), of awakenings and courage (Running). It’s a sparkling kaleidoscope that blends jazz, soul, R & B, blues and pop into a multi-faceted whole. Her 2008 debut album “This One’s For Dinah”, a tribute to the legendary Dinah Washington, established China Moses as a major voice. Now recognized as a jazz and soul diva with her own style, Moses has no need to hide behind her idol. For the listener, many a pleasurable evening enjoying this rich, multi-hued jewel of an album lie ahead.

Who is this woman with the mysterious name China Moses? She is the daughter of jazz singer and multiple Grammy award winner Dee Dee Bridgewater. Her father was the legendary theater, film and television director Gilbert Moses. So the apple didn’t fall so far from the tree. Music has played an important role in her life, as well as acting, as her concerts prove. China Moses dared to take her first steps as a singer while still a teenager (the video clip of her first single, Time (1996) on YouTube is well worth watching!). In 1997 she released her debut album, China, which included a guest appearance by hip hop legend GURU. With two more acclaimed albums as well as numerous feature engagements, she has established herself as a much-sought-after vocalist in the emerging R&B scene of her chosen home town, Paris. She also worked as a presenter on MTV France. The international breakthrough came in 2008 with the jazz album This One’s For Dinah (2008), a declaration of love for her musical idol Dinah Washington, in collaboration with the French pianist Raphaël Lemonnier. 2012 followed with Crazy Blues, another mix of jazz, blues and pop hits. Suddenly, China was thought of as a singer of jazz and blues standards. With Nightintales China proves she can do more. For the first time, her own songs are in the spotlight. China pushes aside the aggravation of record companies and producers, of recording dates limited to music that was not of her own choosing; On Nightintales, China Moses demonstrates for the first time what she is really made of. In times of radical changes, this power-woman takes her stand.

Nightintales – tales from 1001 Nights? Not quite. China Moses and the British R&B and hip hop producer Anthony Marshall needed just five days (in particular, nights!) for the new songs, but they provide the fabric for a thousand and one listening pleasures. Great songwriting – inspired, mysterious, captivating. The many reflective moments of such nightly narratives as Breaking Point, Ticking Boxes, Whatever, and the melancholy Lobby Call are mesmerizing. And then there are playful songs; for instance, Hungover, which verges on slapstick as it illustrates the intoxication of love. Thanks to China Moses’ amazing voice, it’s great cerebral cinema! Eclectic music thrillingly transformed into a tingling cocktail of deep soul, impulsive blaxploitation quotes, lounge jazz, and grooving R&B, seasoned with a healthy pinch of pop. The songs are full of life, and yet they remain self-contained. They sound mature, exude passion, dedication and determination. “Much of this album came out of the moment,” explains China Moses; “That’s why it sounds so fresh. We wanted to make timeless music, something you could still listen to years later. It should sound as live as possible, and yet as compact as the classic jazz songs of the past. They were usually only two to three minutes long. Our album lasts only 50 minutes, but there is everything in it. We do the long version in concert.” China is supported by a strong band out of London, with Luigi Grasso on alto and baritone saxophone, pianist Joe Armon Jones, Luke Wynter on bass and Marijus Aleksa on drums. They form a foundation on which China can build. She’s a soul diva with a distinctive musical personality and a vocal presence that’s pure energy. On stage, this captivating entertainer has long since become an established name at major jazz festivals.

Flutist and composer Christian Artmann is proud to announce the release of “Our Story”, his 3rd album as a leader and his 2nd for Sunnyside after the well-received 2015 release “Fields of Pannonia”. One of the most compelling flute specialists to emerge on the jazz scene in recent years, Artmann has assembled a cast of long-term musical associates for the recording of Our Story: the formidable Laszlo Gardony on piano, whom Artmann cites as an important musical and spiritual teacher; the tight and responsive rhythm section of bassist Johannes Weidenmueller and drummer Jeff Hirshfield, both of whom played on his previous album as well as his 2011 debut “Uneasy Dreams”; and special guest Elena McEntire who substantially enhances the uniqueness of the band’s sound with her versatile and expressive vocals.

After growing up in Germany and Austria immersed in classical music, Artmann discovered a natural affinity for the jazz tradition and ethnic music when he moved to the U.S. as a teenager. Drawn to expansive sonorities and rich harmony, he has a modern rhythmic sense that is at home equally in straight ahead jazz as well as grooves redolent of funk, hip-hop and Brazilian music. Compositionally, Artmann cites Wayne Shorter, Claude Debussy, Miles Davis and Johannes Brahms among his most important influences, and his music seems to transcend genres effortlessly. His instruments of choice are both the concert flute and alto flute — the latter having grown increasingly central to his music since 2009.

The title track of Our Story, and Artmann’s conception of the album as a whole, are a reflection of his Buddhist faith. “The idea that we all interrelate, that whatever I do has an effect on you and vice versa, that’s a powerful concept that I really believe in. The music on Our Story isn’t so much about me as it is about us as a band and as comrades in challenging times, and about all of us as eternal beings living together on this precious planet.”

Dropkick Murphys come out swinging with their eighth full-length recording, SIGNED and SEALED in BLOOD. The band is back and firing with ballsier guitars, louder vocals, catchier hooks and lyrics that will stop you in your tracks. The album is an exhilarating fusion of folk and punk. Essential standouts include “The Boys Are Back,” “Burn,” “My Hero” and “Don’t Tear Us Apart.” SIGNED and SEALED in BLOOD is proof that Dropkick Murphys are at the top of their game as songwriters.

After dabbling in a more narrative style with their 2011 concept album Going Out in Style, Dropkick Murphys get back to their raucous roots on their eighth album, Signed and Sealed in Blood. Blazing their way through 12 tracks of ripping Celtic punk, Dropkick Murphys are still partying on after all these years with songs that feel as though they should be listened to while drunkenly singing with a bar full of like-minded, and likewise intoxicated, friends. What’s really stirring about Dropkick Murphys after all this time is that their music isn’t so much a celebration of being Irish, but a celebration of celebrating. “The Boys Are Back” is the perfect prelude to a night on the town you’re not likely to remember in the morning, and the rest of the album follows suit with an energy that mixes in just the right amount of mirth, mayhem, and maudlin, making Signed and Sealed in Blood an album that’s sure to please Murphys fans both old and new.

Known as Clare Fischer & Salsa Picante Present “2 + 2” in the States, this special album earned keyboardist/composer/arranger Clare Fischer his first Emmy. It combines the American’s lauded Latin group Salsa Picante with another of Fischer’s musical loves, vocal jazz. Before he migrated into Latin and bossa, Fischer arranged and played piano for one of the most popular vocal jazz groups of the late 1950’s the Hi-Lo’s. A major influence on the next generation of musicians, Fischer’s place in the jazz Pantheon is secure – several of his compositions have become jazz and Latin standards; Herbie Hancock commented “I wouldn’t be me without Clare Fischer”. The group includes conga star Poncho Sánchez, Weather Report percussionist Alex Acuña, Fischer’s son, Brent (Prince, Michael Jackson, Usher, Al Jarreau), and Grammy award-winning singer Darlene Koldenhoven. The compositions display Fischer’s compositional and arranging artistry: Morning has become a Latin jazz standard, and Guajira Pa’ La Jeva was named best Latin Recording of 1981. For those who love sophisticated Latin Jazz, this album is a must!

The church organ’s role in classical music runs from Buxtahude and Bach on through to such contemporary composers as Hindemith and Messian, but jazz musicians have tended to stay clear of this mighty instrument and its orchestral power. Not so Swiss jazz maestro George Grunz; on this 1968 MPS album, accompanied by two European jazz masters, bassist Eberhard Weber and drummer Daniel Humair, Gruntz utilizes the organ as “a vehicle to elevate some of the most beautiful ballad-like melodies to a world of sound completely new to jazz”.

Benny Golson’s elegiac tribute to trumpet icon Clifford Brown I Remember Clifford, Billie Holiday’s poignant God Bless the Child, the Spiritual Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen, and Carla Bley’s Jesus Maria find a natural home in this Church setting. And a languorous version of Summertime, Grüntz’s poignant interpretation of Ornette Coleman’s Lonely Woman, the loving care given to the classic standard My Funny Valentine, the pathos of You Don’t Know What Love Is, the bright swing of John Lewis’ tribute to the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, and the baroque chordal play that permeates Yesterdays ring clear and true in this ecclesiastical setting. Playing on a three-manual Baroque organ built for the St. Peter Abbey Church in Germany’s Black Forest by the world-famous Klais Orgelbau, Grüntz has transposed the spiritual passion of jazz onto the church organ.

Graham Nash’s second solo effort has been overshadowed by his harmonic heroics as a senior partner in the various Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young configurations. After being lured from the Hollies — where his latter contributions were criminally unappreciated (see, or rather hear Dear Eloise/King Midas in Reverse) — it was Nash who had come up with most of the CSN(Y) hit singles, including “Marrakesh Express,” “Our House,” and “Teach Your Children.” His 1971 debut, Songs for Beginners, was likewise filled with inspired moments such as “I Used to Be a King,” “Chicago/We Can Change the World,” and “Sleep Song.” Topping those efforts would have been superhuman. Such is the way that Wild Tales has been eclipsed and overlooked by enthusiasts of his previous endeavors. Nash gathered a core aggregate of musicians, many of whom were loosely connected to the CSNY family. These include: Johnny Barbata (drums), Tim Drummond (bass), David Lindley (guitar), and Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar/dobro), and, of course David Crosby (vocals). Also making guest shots were Dave Mason (12-string guitar), Joe Yankee (aka Neil Young) (acoustic piano), and Joni Mitchell (vocals). Together, they animate Nash’s slice-of-life compositions. Musically, Nash retains much of the whimsy that drew folks to his earlier songs. Likewise, the subject matter ranges from political (“Oh Camil” and “Prison Song”) to the emotionally naked “Another Sleep Song” and “I Miss You.” Nash would bring several of these tunes back to the CSNY fold for their 1974 tour — including the up-tempo rocking title track, as well as the folkie “Prison Song.” It would be another seven years after Wild Tales before Nash would issue his next solo album, Earth & Sky — which fared as poorly at its predecessor. –Lindsay Planer

A pleasing vocalist with a warm delivery reminiscent of Andy Williams or Tony Bennett, John Gary unfortunately came along just at the beginning of the British Invasion and never managed to make much of an impression on the adult vocal audience. This album have been released for RCA Victor label in October 1968.

Simplicity can be quite effective especially if it’s in the hand of such a knowlegeable singer as John Gary. “MacArthur Park”, “Little Green Apples”, “Saturday Night at the World”, and “You’d Better Sit Down Kids” have a quiet but long-lasting force.

GRAMMY Award-winning vocalist Joss Stone has released the eagerly anticipated reprise to her massive selling debut, The Soul Sessions. The Soul Sessions, Volume 2 is a stellar exercise in vocal poise, precision and passion. At the height of her vocal powers, Stone covers soul standards including “(For God’s Sake) Give More Power To The People,” “The High Road,” “While You’re Out Looking For Sugar” and “Pillow Talk.” Stone is joined by an extraordinary cast of musicians including Ernie Isley, Delbert McClinton, Clayton Ivey and others. The album reached the top 10 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums, the Billboard 200 and Billboard’s Top Digital Albums. A must have!

Joss Stone launched her career by singing soul standards so when it came time for a reboot she went back to the beginning, dusting off the old blueprint for The Soul Sessions and following it to a T, right down to replicating its title and giving a contemporary alt-rock hit a soul makeover. First time around, the intent was to prove that teenage Joss had soul bona fides, but in 2012 the purpose of The Soul Sessions, Vol. 2 is to signal how she’s done messing around with fleeting fashions and is getting back down to the real business. Stone doesn’t dig deep into the crates this time around, nor does she stick to deep soul; she chooses to mine hits from the early ’70s, favoring songs by the Dells, the Chi-Lites, and Sylvia, giving these smooth tunes a bit of a polished Southern spin. And “professional” is the operative word here: this is the work of seasoned veterans who play with every note falling neatly into place, stretching just enough to show off their chops but never enough to alter the DNA of a song. The exception to the rule is, of course, “The High Road,” a Broken Bells song refashioned to sound old, thereby occupying the same space as Joss’ White Stripes “Fell in Love with a Boy” cover did on the first Soul Sessions. This is the song to prove that Stone isn’t living in the past but rather she’s seeing the future through a retro prism that turns everything into something that feels classic. That Stone remains a bit too theatrical a singer, overemphasizing every phrase, is almost besides the point, as she’s a diva and is expected to sing with more gusto than the song requires just as long as the overall package feels right. And, for the most part, The Soul Sessions, Vol. 2 does feel right: it has the form and sound of classic soul while never acknowledging that R&B continued to develop past, say, 1972. For an audience that agrees with that thesis, this is fun.

“Life On A Rock” is country star Kenny Chesney’s 15th studio album. The record features singles “Pirate Flag” and “When I See This Bar”. The record charted at number one on both the weekly US Billboard 200 and US Billboard Top Country Albums, it ended the year at number 16 on the US Top Country Albums.

Life on a Rock follows its 2012 predecessor Welcome to the Fishbowl quickly – very quickly, appearing a mere ten months later. Why did Chesney rush out this record? It could be a tacit acknowledgment that Chesney wasn’t entirely engaged on Welcome to the Fishbowl, an album that was thoroughly professional not only in its production but in its construction: Chesney barely wrote a thing on the record, choosing to slide into the role of superstar singer, acting like a rock star and living under a spotlight. It was fine but slight, somewhat lost in its own gleaming reflection, leaving little lasting impression. Life on a Rock is similarly light but it’s not overly polished. It’s breezy, music made for an afternoon at the beach – a return to the sun-and-sand anthems that Chesney has had as a sideline for about a decade now. At times, he accentuates his good times in the sun just a bit too heavily, inviting the Wailers in so they can give “Spread the Love” a genuine reggae bounce and also writing an ode to “Marley” somewhat in the vein of Eric Church’s “Springsteen,” but this is the mildest form of overreaching; he’s trying just a little bit too hard to chill out. Apart from that, Life on a Rock flows sweetly and easily, the tunes gently drifting between strummed ballads and shimmering low-key pop, with the opening song (and first single) “Pirate Flag” being the only song here with a hard pulse. Chesney never sounds like he’s trying too hard but, the thing of it is, he wrote all but three of the songs here, so this represents a considerable uptick in effort from its predecessor. That effort pays off: this feels fuller, richer than any Chesney album in recent memory, but it’s also unhurried and light, an ideal soundtrack for a long, lazy summer.

Tracklist:
01 – Pirate Flag
02 – When I See This Bar
03 – Spread The Love (featuring The Wailers with Elan)

“Love Gun” is the sixth studio album by American hard rock band Kiss, released on June 30, 1977 by Casablanca Records. It was their first album to feature a lead vocal performance from Ace Frehley, making it the first Kiss album to feature lead vocal performances from all four band members. It was also the last studio album to feature Peter Criss on every song… Love Gun was certified platinum on June 30, 1977.

Love Gun was Kiss’ fifth studio album in three years (and seventh release overall, peaking at number four on Billboard), and proved to be the last release that the original lineup played on. By 1977, Kiss merchandise was flooding the marketplace (lunch boxes, makeup kits, comic books, etc.), and it would ultimately lead to a Kiss backlash in the ’80s. But the band was still focused on their music for Love Gun, similar in sound and approach to Rock and Roll Over, their previous straight-ahead rock release. It included Ace Frehley’s lead vocals on “Shock Me,” as well as one of Kiss’ best and most renowned hard rockers in the thunderous title track. The album’s opener, “I Stole Your Love,” also served as the opening number on Kiss’ ensuing tour, while “Christine Sixteen” is one of the few Kiss tracks to contain piano prominently. “Almost Human” is an underrated rocker and features a great Jimi Hendrix-esque guitar solo from Frehley (no doubt due to ex-Hendrix producer Eddie Kramer manning the boards again), while “Plaster Caster” is a tribute to the famous groupies of the same name. The only weak spots on an otherwise stellar album are an obvious “Rock and Roll All Nite” ripoff titled “Tomorrow and Tonight,” and a pointless remake of the Phil Spector-penned classic “Then He Kissed Me” (reworked as “Then She Kissed Me”).

The ancient shamanistic musical traditions of the Sami of northern Scandinavia are given a modern twist by vocalist and drummer Mari Boine (Persen). Although her highly rhythmic songs are rooted in the wordless, yodeling-like vocal style of yoik (or joik), Boine’s arrangements incorporate influences of jazz, rock, and other ethnic elements. “See the Woman” it’s a debut in a two fold respect: Sami singer Mari Boine’s first album completely in English and her first album for the label MPS, recorded by producer Tobias Frøberg. A melancholic, spherical pop sound meets a sophisticated lyrical concept.

Together with three excellent musicians the clarinetist Michael Heitzler found his own band in order to give a special tribute to the big American and East-European bands of the 20s to 50s and the spiritual melodies of the hassidim of Eastern Europe.
