FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 45:56 minutes | 537 MB | Genre: Jazz
Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | Front cover | @ Savant Records
Recorded January 8, 2015 at Tedesco Studios in Paramus, NJ.

Tenor saxophonist JD Allen’s latest release featuring Gregg August and Rudy Royston consisting of nine original tracks.

JD Allen’s career ascendence suggests that he’s making plenty of the right choices. The native of Detroit has been on the New York scene since 1993, when his youthful precociousness earned him a spot in “Jazz Ahead”, the singer Betty Carter’s acclaimed touring program for up-and-comers. TimeOut New York says he will “remind you of giants like Coltrane and Rollins but placing a special kind of premium on concision, directness and accessibility.” The Chicago Reader adds, “Allen has gravitated toward a more brooding, elliptical approach with a strong jolt of John Coltrane at his most probing.” Finally, JD is, in the words of Connecticut’s WNPR, “A man for all seasons,” who “plays ballads with warmth, beauty and truth, grooves hard in a post-bop mode or wails in a free jazz setting with passion saturated with the soulful spirituality, grace and inspired abandon recalling the power and the glory of John Coltrane.” One of the telltale symbols of his upward trajectory is the fact that his trio, bassist Gregg August (lead bass chair in the Brooklyn Philharmonic) and drummer Rudy Royston (a much sought-after rhythm power since relocating to New York from Denver), has remained solid throughout his rise.

Called “one of the great voices of today”, Alexis Cole has been compared to classic jazz singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Anita O’Day. Her luxurious voice and innovative interpretations make her an instant favorite with audiences of all ages. Cole is the recipient of a Swing Journal Gold Disk award, and has won the NY Jazzmobile and Montreux Jazz Festival vocal competitions…

This time out, Alexis Cole goes further back in time with her quartet of guitarist Saul Rubin, saxophonist/clarinetist Dan Block, bassist Pat O’Leary and drummer Phil Stewart to a more genteel time when sheet music was the most common method of dissemination of popular tunes. With her relaxed style, clear articulation, unhurried, conversational approach and allknowing sense of cool, Cole and her crew strike a swinging accord on nuggets like “Ain’t We Got Fun,” “Bimini Bay,” “Whippoorwill,” the buoyantly swinging title track and ten other tunes from yesteryear in this engaging retro revue. Everything goes down nice ‘n’ easy on this luxurious outing, and Alexis delivers with timeless charm from track to track.

Part of the Chesky Binaural + Series, all recorded with a single microphone, the band and singer appear right before you with this spacious, lush and multidimensional recording. You will hear some of the most natural and pure vocals ever recorded of a jazz singer.

Dark Territory is a collection of new music from the creative electronic-inspired ensemble High Risk. Following the success of the group’s eponymous release in 2015, this new album continues to explore the intersection of creative improvisation and modern electronic music production to create a unique sound that Pitchfork described as, “simultaneously chill and surprising, it’s the sound of a group discovering a valid language, and then proceeding to push the limits of that new aesthetic”.

Lead a highly experimental musician, two-time GRAMMY nominated trumpeter Dave Douglas, who’s has spent his career investigating sounds often far outside the acoustic jazz tradition, the album once again features Jonathan Maron (Groove Collective) on electric and acoustic bass, Mark Guiliana (Beat Music, Heernt, David Bowie) on electric and acoustic drums and DJ, producer and beatmaker Shigeto (Ghostly International) on electronics.

The material was recorded by five-time GRAMMY nominated Geoff Countryman (Dr. Luke, Patti LaBelle, Wu-Tang Clan, Randy Brecker, Gregory Porter, Fred Hersch) and mixed by Steve Wall (Semi Precious Weapons, Matisyahu, Meshell Ndegeocello), and mastered by Mark Wilder.

Acclaimed trombonist Jeff Bradshaw came “home” to The Kimmel Center for a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of great artists from the worlds of R&B, Jazz and Gospel; the resulting concert, presented in all its glory here, delivers electrifying performances by Jeff, Robert Glasper, Marsha Ambrosius, Black Thought of The Roots, Will Downing, Kim Burrell, Bilal, Kenny Lattimore, Tweet, Eric Roberson, Take 6, Najee and Trombone Shorty, all backed by a 20 piece orchestra.

Highlights include Kim Burrell s stunning 9 minute performance of Love, Marsha Ambrosius emotional rendition of a previously unrecorded original song, and Bilal s intense version of the Enchantment s classic Where Do We Go From Here. This 40th anniversary special edition was remixed and remastered by Steve Wilson.

Britain’s Jethro Tull sowed the seeds that would become its flowering brand of progressive rock three albums into their career. Their third album, 1969’s Benefit, is a welcome transition away from the blues-rock that characterized their earlier material. Despite a tumultuous line-up change that severed ties with the group’s bassist, the addition of organist John Evan would more than compensate for the loss. The RIAA would certify the record Gold nearly a year after its release, recognizing the sale of over 500,000 copies. Reaching #3 on the UK charts and #11 stateside on the Billboard Hot 200, Benefit gained attention for its notable use of advanced studio techniques. The unmistakable voice and musicianship of frontman and producer Ian Anderson still resonates on the album over forty years later. The record’s ambitious nature and signature sound served as a precursor to Jethro Tull’s revered album Aqualung, but should be regarded as an excellent display of sonic ingenuity nonetheless.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/192 kHz | Time – 39:55 minutes | 1,6 GB | Genre: Rock
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: Q0buz | Artwork: Front cover | @ Universal Music GmbH

Unmasked is the eighth studio album by American hard rock band Kiss, released in 1980. It was the last studio album to feature the original lineup of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss until the band reunited in 1996. Criss actually had no involvement with the recording of the album; Anton Fig (uncredited) played all the drums on the album.

Although Unmasked was certified gold shortly after its release in the U.S., it quickly fell off the charts. Deciding factors included the band’s failure to mount a stateside tour, the fact that the majority of the compositions on Unmasked were easily forgettable, and longtime fans’ weariness with Kiss’ attempts to branch out into other musical styles. Vini Poncia was on board as producer again, and again he replaces the raw, heavy rock of earlier Kiss releases with pop gloss. Several tracks are indeed strong, and would have benefited greatly by a more direct sound, such as “Is That You?”, “Talk to Me”, “Two Sides of the Coin”, “Naked City”, and the single, “Shandi”. But there’s more filler on Unmasked than the average Kiss release – “What Makes the World Go ‘Round”, “Tomorrow”, and “She’s So European” are tedious and predictable, both compositionally and sonically. Again, session drummer Anton Fig fills in for Peter Criss, who would officially split from the band soon after the album’s release (eventually replaced by Eric Carr). Although the band’s popularity dwindled in their homeland, they embarked on a massively successful European and Australian tour, where Unmasked was a huge hit, until year’s end.

Sony Music Masterworks imprint Portrait Records signs singing sensation Lexi Walker, the dynamic 13-year-old whose performance of “Let It Go” from Frozen has received over 72 million YouTube views.
Lexi’s holiday-themed debut album Merry Christmas, available November 20, features traditional and new holiday songs from both sides of the Atlantic, including “O Holy Night,” “Christmastime Is Here,” “Pat A Pan,” “When a Child is Born,” plus “We Need a Little Christmas” from Broadway’s Mame. It also includes her rendition of the hit “Let It Go” and more.

At just 13 years old, the eighth-grade redhead has not only starred in a viral video of “Let It Go,” she has performed on America’s Got Talent with the One Voice Children’s Choir and sung with The Piano Guys, Kristin Chenoweth, Lindsey Stirling, and David Archuleta. She recently opened for Idina Menzel at a benefit concert in Utah. Lexi’s rendition of the national anthem at a Real Salt Lake soccer game also reached millions of viewers, and she’ll be belting out “The Star-Spangled Banner” again at the San Francisco 49ers-Arizona Cardinals NFL game on November 29.

Lexi has been singing ever since she can remember. Her grandmother recalls Lexi at two years old, sitting in a gift shop singing along with a stuffed bear that played the Beatles tune “I Will,” over and over until a crowd started to gather. A veteran voice teacher, her grandmother realized right then that she had another talented young singer to nurture.

Since then, Lexi’s explosive young career has included performances on Good Morning America, The Queen Latifah Show, CBS New York’s The Couch, and numerous TV news programs. She has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Disney Christmas Day Parade, and Christmas for the Troops at the Kennedy Center. Based in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, she has toured Japan and the East Coast, and looks forward to bringing her music to new audiences both close to home and around the world – all while continuing to study her favorite subjects (math, science, and art) and eating plenty of sushi and Thai food along the way.

Internationally renowned (and GRAMMY-award winning) conductor Ragnar Bohlin founded Cappella SF, a professional chamber choir, in 2014. With Cappella SF, maestro Bohlin strives to showcase the choral riches of all musical periods at the highest artistic level. And concertgoers lucky enough to have heard them in concert will confirm that this superb new choir is doing just that.

This marvelous holiday program, with music spanning more than a millennium, has something for everybody. In addition to beloved traditional seasonal standards in striking arrangements, listeners will also take great delight in both original compositions and arrangements from top-tier English and American composers as well as leading choral masters from Bohlin’s native country of Sweden – to include a piece composed for Cappella SF by Fredrik Sixten that’s heard here in its world premiere recording.

Recorded: Power Station Studios, New York City

Originally released in 1983, „Hello Big Man“ was Carly Simon’s final album for Warner Brothers Records. Following 1981’s well-reviewed but commercially lackluster collection of jazz and pop standards „Torch“, „Hello Big Man“ was another unexpected stylistic detour, featuring Simon recording with the pioneering reggae rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. While the resulting music bears an obvious reggae influence (most particularly on a cover of Bob Marley’s ‘Is This Love?’), the overall effect has more in common with slightly younger and more stylistically experimental singer-songwriters such as Joan Armatrading and Rickie Lee Jones. Unfortunately, for all their quirky charms, the album and its single, ‘You Know What To Do,’ were both commercial failures. The budget-line reissue from Rhino Flashback features remastered sound.

Hello Big Man, Carly Simon’s first new studio album of original material in more than three years, followed on from her 1981 album of standards, Torch, and the British Top Ten success of her collaboration with Chic, “Why.” Both experiences (plus, perhaps, her 1980 hit “Jesse”) seemed to have reinvigorated her taste in pop music, if Hello Big Man was any indication. The sound was a return to the style of Anticipation and No Secrets after years of following trends — the songs were romantic, with the erotic edge that had charged much of Simon’s best material. The album was typically uneven, what with its reggae material (including a redundant cover of Bob Marley’s “Is This Love”), but also typically personal and compelling. The title track was a winning account of her parents’ courting, complete with a happy-ever-after ending that didn’t occur in real life. –AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

Carly Simon’s 1972 album No Secrets remains a benchmark of the era’s singer-songwriter releases, both commercially and artistically. The platinum selling album topped the Billboard charts, yielded the #1 single “You’re So Vain” and the top 10 single “The Right Thing to Do.” The album also features an all-star set of cameos, including appearances by James Taylor, Paul and Linda McCartney, and Mick Jagger.

Carly Simon’s best album, No Secrets was also her commercial breakthrough, topping the charts and going gold, along with its leadoff single, “You’re So Vain.” That song set the album’s saucy tone, with its air of sexually frank autobiography (“You had me several years ago/When I was still quite naïve”) and its reflections on the jet-set lifestyle. But Simon’s honesty meant that her lyrical knife was double-edged; now that she felt she had found true love (“The Right Thing to Do,” another Top Ten hit, was her celebration of her relationship with James Taylor), she was as willing to acknowledge her own mistakes and regrets as she was to point fingers. But it wasn’t only Simon’s forthrightness that made the album work; it was also Richard Perry’s simple, elegant pop/rock production, which gave Simon’s music a buoyancy it previously lacked. And Perry paid particular attention to Simon’s vocals in a way that made her more engaging (or at least less grating) to listen to.

Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the ’80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of groundbreaking albums; he toured frequently, produced albums and wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults. With each album he released, Prince has shown remarkable stylistic growth and musical diversity, constantly experimenting with different sounds, textures, and genres. Occasionally, his music can be maddeningly inconsistent because of this eclecticism, but his experiments frequently succeed; no other contemporary artist can blend so many diverse styles into a cohesive whole. Prince is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who has sold over eighty million copies worldwide. He has won seven GRAMMY Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. He is also one of Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”.

Prince – For You (1978/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 33:21 minutes | 1,19 GB
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front cover

For You is Prince’s highly regarded debut album. He showcases his unworldly arrangements and performance skills, blending R&B with funk. Reaching the top twenty five on Billboard’s Top R&B albums, For You includes the standouts, “Just As Long As We’re Together” and “Soft And Wet.” This iconic debut is an essential addition to your music collection.

On his debut album, For You, Prince shows exceptional skill for arranging and performing mainstream urban R&B and funk, but his songwriting remains conventional. Only on the mildly racy “Soft and Wet” does he demonstrate a personal touch, but the song is still more of a promise than a fulfillment. While For You isn’t a bad record, it is merely a pleasant one, and it offers very little indication of his staggering talents.

Tracklist:
01 – For You
02 – In Love
03 – Soft And Wet
04 – Crazy You
05 – Just As Long As We’re Together
06 – Baby
07 – My Love Is Forever
08 – So Blue

Prince – Prince (1979/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 41:05 minutes | 1,44 GB
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front cover

Prince is the second studio album by Prince, originally released in October 1979. It was written, produced, and performed entirely by Prince himself, and is a harbinger of what Prince would be capable of in his future albums. The song “I Feel for You” is a true masterpiece, all the more incredible given the fact Prince was only 20 years old when he recorded the album. Other great singles from this album include “I Wanna Be Your Lover” and “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?”

Expanding the urban R&B and funk approach of his debut, Prince is a considerably more accomplished record than his first effort, featuring the first signs of his adventurous, sexy signature sound. Although the album is still rather uneven, a handful of songs rank as classics. “I Wanna Be Your Lover” is excellent lite funk and “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?” is a wonderful soulful plea, but “I Feel for You,” a sexy slice of urban R&B with a strong pop melody, is the true masterpiece of Prince, indicating the major breakthroughs of his next album, Dirty Mind.

Tracklist:
01 – I Wanna Be Your Lover
02 – Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?
03 – Sexy Dancer
04 – When We’re Dancing Close and Slow
05 – With You
06 – Bambi
07 – Still Waiting
08 – I Feel for You
09 – It’s Gonna Be Lonely

Prince – Dirty Mind (1979/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 30:03 minutes | 1,03 GB
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front cover

Neither For You nor Prince was adequate preparation for the full-blown masterpiece of Prince’s third album, Dirty Mind. Recorded in his home studio, with Prince playing nearly every instrument, Dirty Mind is a stunning, audacious amalgam of funk, new wave, R&B, and pop, fueled by grinningly salacious sex and the desire to shock. Where other pop musicians suggested sex in lewd double-entendres, Prince left nothing to hide – before its release, no other rock or funk record was ever quite as explicit as Dirty Mind, with its gleeful tales of oral sex, threesomes, and even incest. Certainly, it opened the doors for countless sexually explicit albums, but to reduce its impact to mere profanity is too reductive – the music of Dirty Mind is as shocking as its graphic language, bending styles and breaking rules with little regard for fixed genres. Basing the album on a harder, rock-oriented beat more than before, Prince tries everything – there’s pure new wave pop (“When You Were Mine”), soulful crooning (“Gotta Broken Heart Again”), robotic funk (“Dirty Mind”), rock & roll (“Sister”), sultry funk (“Head,” “Do It All Night”), and relentless dance jams (“Uptown,” “Partyup”), all in the space of half an hour. It’s a breathtaking, visionary album, and its fusion of synthesizers, rock rhythms, and funk set the style for much of the urban soul and funk of the early ’80s.

Tracklist:
01 – Dirty Mind
02 – When You Were Mine
03 – Do It All Night
04 – Gotta Broken Heart Again
05 – Uptown
06 – Head
07 – Sister
08 – Partyup

Prince – Controversy (1981/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 37:08 minutes | 1,26 GB
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front cover

Composed, produced, arranged and performed by Prince, Controversy is the music icon’s 1981 classic. Reaching #3 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums, the work features the hit R&B singles “Controversy” and “Let’s Work.” This undeniable masterpiece highlights Prince’s remarkable musicianship. The outing received four stars from Blender and Rolling Stone.

Controversy continues in the same vein of new wave-tinged funk on Dirty Mind, emphasizing Prince’s fascination with synthesizers and synthesizing disparate pop music genres. It is also more ambitious than its predecessor, attempting to tackle social protest (“Controversy,” “Ronnie, Talk to Russia,” “Annie Christian”) along with sex songs (“Jack U Off,” “Sexuality”), and it tries hard to bring funk to a rock audience and vice versa. Even with all of Prince’s ambitions, the music on Controversy doesn’t represent a significant breakthrough from Dirty Mind, and it is often considerably less catchy and memorable. Nevertheless, Prince’s talents as musician make the record enjoyable, even if it isn’t as compelling as most of his catalog.

Tracklist:
01 – Controversy
02 – Sexuality
03 – Do Me, Baby
04 – Private Joy
05 – Ronnie, Talk to Russia
06 – Let’s Work
07 – Annie Christian
08 – Jack U Off

Prince – 1999 (1982/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 70:12 minutes | 2,52 GB
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front cover

1999 is the seminal masterpiece by Prince. It is his first to reach the Billboard Top Ten and was one of the bestselling albums of 1983. The outing features the breakthrough hits “1999,” “Delirious” and “Little Red Corvette.” The multi-instrumentalist incorporates thrilling synthesizers to produce one of his most innovative works to date. VH1, Slant Magazine, and Rolling Stone named 1999 one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2008, the album was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame.

Chart History/Awards:
– Reached #4 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums.
– Reached #9 on the Billboard 200.
– “1999” reached #4 on Billboard’s Top R&B Singles.
– “Delirious” reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
– Included on VH1, Slant Magazine and Rolling Stone’s “Greatest Albums of All Time.”
– Inducted into the GRAMMY® Hall of Fame.
– Allmusic.com – 5/5 stars.

With Dirty Mind, Prince had established a wild fusion of funk, rock, new wave, and soul that signaled he was an original, maverick talent, but it failed to win him a large audience. After delivering the sound-alike album, Controversy, Prince revamped his sound and delivered the double album 1999. Where his earlier albums had been a fusion of organic and electronic sounds, 1999 was constructed almost entirely on synthesizers by Prince himself. Naturally, the effect was slightly more mechanical and robotic than his previous work and strongly recalled the electro-funk experiments of several underground funk and hip-hop artists at the time. Prince had also constructed an album dominated by computer funk, but he didn’t simply rely on the extended instrumental grooves to carry the album – he didn’t have to when his songwriting was improving by leaps and bounds. The first side of the record contained all of the hit singles, and, unsurprisingly, they were the ones that contained the least amount of electronics. “1999” parties to the apocalypse with a P-Funk groove much tighter than anything George Clinton ever did, “Little Red Corvette” is pure pop, and “Delirious” takes rockabilly riffs into the computer age. After that opening salvo, all the rules go out the window – “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” is a salacious extended lust letter, “Free” is an elegiac anthem, “All the Critics Love U in New York” is a vicious attack at hipsters, and “Lady Cab Driver,” with its notorious bridge, is the culmination of all of his sexual fantasies. Sure, Prince stretches out a bit too much over the course of 1999, but the result is a stunning display of raw talent, not wallowing indulgence.

Tracklist:
01 – 1999
02 – Little Red Corvette
03 – Delirious
04 – Let’s Pretend We’re Married
05 – D.M.S.R.

– “Let’s Go Crazy” and “When Doves Cry” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
– Won two GRAMMY Awards.
– Allmusic.com – 5/5 stars, album pick.

Prince designed Purple Rain as the project that would make him a superstar, and, surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, Purple Rain finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Even its best-known songs don’t tread conventional territory: the bass-less “When Doves Cry” is an eerie, spare neo-psychedelic masterpiece; “Let’s Go Crazy” is a furious blend of metallic guitars, Stonesy riffs, and a hard funk backbeat; the anthemic title track is a majestic ballad filled with brilliant guitar flourishes. Although Prince’s songwriting is at a peak, the presence of the Revolution pulls the music into sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. And, with the guidance of Wendy and Lisa, Prince pushed heavily into psychedelia, adding swirling strings to the dreamy “Take Me With U” and the hard rock of “Baby I’m a Star.” Even with all of his new, but uncompromising, forays into pop, Prince hasn’t abandoned funk, and the robotic jam of “Computer Blue” and the menacing grind of “Darling Nikki” are among his finest songs. Taken together, all of the stylistic experiments add up to a stunning statement of purpose that remains one of the most exciting rock & roll albums ever recorded.

Tracklist:
01 – Let’s Go Crazy
02 – Take Me With U
03 – The Beautiful Ones
04 – Computer Blue
05 – Darling Nikki
06 – When Doves Cry

Prince – Around The World In A Day (1985/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 42:33 minutes | 1,54 GB
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front cover

Around The World In A Day is Prince’s double Platinum classic. This seminal masterpiece follows the success of Purple Rain, reaching #1 on the Billboard 200. Adding a variety of psychedelic elements to his sound, the albums features Top Ten hits including “America,” “Pop Life” and “Raspberry Beret”.

Purple Rain made Prince sound like he could do anything, but it still didn’t prepare even his most fervent fans for the insular psychedelia of Around the World in a Day. Prince had made his interior world sound fascinating and utopian on Purple Rain, but Around the World in a Day is filled with cryptic religious imagery, bizarre mysticism, and confounding metaphors which were drenched in heavily processed guitars, shimmering keyboards, grandiose strings, and layers of vocals. As an album, the record is a bit impenetrable, requiring great demands of the listener, but individual songs do shine through: “Raspberry Beret” is a brilliant piece of neo-psychedelia with an indelible chorus, “Pop Life” is a snide swipe at stardom that emphasizes Prince’s outsider status, “Condition of the Heart” is a fine ballad, “America” is a good funk jam, “Paisley Park” is heavy and slightly frightening guitar psychedelia, while the title track is a sunny, kaleidoscopic pastiche of Magical Mystery Tour. The problem is, only a handful of the songs have much substance outside of their detailed production and intoxicating performances, and the album has a creepy sense of paranoia that is eventually its undoing.

Tracklist:
01 – Around The World In A Day
02 – Paisley Park
03 – Condition Of The Heart
04 – Raspberry Beret
05 – Tamborine
06 – America
07 – Pop Life

Prince – Parade: Music From The Motion Picture Under The Cherry Moon (1986/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 40:53 minutes | 1,46 GB
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front cover

“Parade: Music From The Motion Picture Under The Cherry Moon” is Prince’s eighth studio album and the last album that he did with The Revolution. It was released as the soundtrack to the 1986 film Under the Cherry Moon, which was directed by Prince, who also starred in the film. The album was mostly a solo effort by Prince, who plays most of the instruments on the album. Other musicians featured on the album include Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin, Dr. Fink, Jonathan Melvoin, and Susannah Melvoin, as well as featuring several orchestral arrangements by Clare Fischer.

Undaunted by the criticism Around the World in a Day received, Prince continued to pursue his psychedelic inclinations on Parade, which also functioned as the soundtrack to his second film, Under the Cherry Moon. Originally conceived as a double album, Parade has the sprawling feel of a double record, even if it clocks in around 45 minutes. Prince & the Revolution shift musical moods and textures from song to song – witness how the fluttering psychedelia of “Christopher Tracy’s Parade” gives way to the spare, jazzy funk of “New Position,” which morphs into the druggy “I Wonder U” – and they’re determined not to play it safe, even on the hard funk of “Girls and Boys” and “Mountains,” as well as the stunning “Kiss,” which hits hard with just a dry guitar, keyboard, drum machine, and layered vocals. All of the group’s musical adventures, even the cabaret-pop of “Venus de Milo” and “Do U Lie?” do nothing to undercut the melodicism of the record, and the amount of ground they cover in 12 songs is truly remarkable. Even with all of its attributes, Parade is a little off-balance, stopping too quickly to give the haunting closer, “Sometimes It Snows in April,” the resonance it needs. For some tastes, it may also be a bit too lyrically cryptic, but Prince’s weird religious and sexual metaphors develop into a motif that actually gives the album weight. If it had been expanded to a double album, Parade would have equaled the subsequent Sign ‘o’ the Times, but as it stands, it’s an astonishingly rewarding near-miss.

01 – Christopher Tracy’s Parade
02 – New Position
03 – I Wonder U
04 – Under The Cherry Moon

Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi – The Four Seasons is the 2012 album by neo-classical composer Max Richter. The Four Seasons may be the most cherished piece of classical music ever composed. This album is part of Deutsche Grammophon’s new Recomposed series, which invites contemporary musicians to re-work an original piece of music. Award-winning composer Max Richter approached Vivaldi’s masterpiece as not only an admirer, but more importantly, as a composer. This re-work is engaging, attractive and highly accessible. The album features British violinist Daniel Hope, German conductor Andre de Ridder and the Konzerthaus Chamber Orchestra.

Antonio Vivaldi’s Le Quattro Stagioni is one of the most beloved works in Baroque music, and even the most casual listener can recognize certain passages of “Spring” or “Winter” from frequent use in television commercials and films. Yet if these concertos have grown a little too familiar to experienced classical fans, Max Richter has disassembled them and fashioned a new composition from the deconstructed pieces. Using post-minimalist procedures to extract fertile fragments and reshape the materials into new music, Richter has created an album that speaks to a generation familiar with remixes, sampling, and sound collages, though his method transcends the manipulation of prerecorded music. Richter has actually rescored the Four Seasons and given the movements of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter thorough makeovers that vary substantially from the originals. The new material is suggestive of a dream state, where drifting phrases and recombined textures blur into walls of sound, only to re-emerge with stark clarity and poignant immediacy. Violinist Daniel Hope is the brilliant soloist in these freshly elaborated pieces, and the Konzerthaus Kammerorchester Berlin is conducted with control and assurance by André de Ridder, so Richter’s carefully calculated effects are handled with precision and subtlety. Deutsche Grammophon’s stellar reproduction captures the music with great depth, breadth, and spaciousness, so everything that Richter and de Ridder intended to be heard comes across.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 50:08 minutes | 580 MB | Genre: Jazz

Grammy nominee Maysa holds unique status in the world of R&B/Jazz. Her incomparably lush, sensuous vocals have garnered her legions of loyal, loving fans. As featured vocalist of the UK super group Incognito, core member of Stevie Wonder’s Wonderlove and, of course, through her own al- bums and concerts, Maysa has long thrilled R&B and Jazz audiences. Back 2 Love is the most sensuous and heartfelt recording of her brilliant career. Teaming up with hit making producers JR Hutson (Jill Scott, Earth Wind And Fire), Stokely Williams (Mint Condition), Lorenzo Johnson (Ledisi) and her longtime collaborator Chris “Big Dog” Davis (Will Downing, Phil Perry, Kim Burrell, George Clinton), Maysa digs deep to deliver the soulful, jazz-inflected performances that have won her legions of dedicated fans. Special highlights include “Keep It Moving,” a vibey, funky duet with Mint Condition’s Stokely, “Heavenly Voices,” a deeply moving ballad reminiscent of Maysa’s recent hit “Inside My Dream,” “Last Chance For Love,” Maysa’s gorgeous collaboration with R&B icon Phil Perry and more brilliant Maysa originals.

Back 2 Love, Maysa’s eighth release for the Shanachie label, marks 20 years for the singer as a solo artist. She was as active as ever when the album was released, coming off her first Grammy nomination and gigs with Incognito and her own band. Once more, she works closely with fellow songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Chris “Big Dog” Davis, and J.R. Hutson (son of Chicago soul giant Leroy Hutson) also assists on a handful of cuts. Stokley Williams takes over as composer and producer on “Keep It Movin’,” a highlight on which the Mint Condition leader also plays everything and duets with Maysa. The song has the same traits — the brightness, that slight bounce and lilt — as Mint Condition’s best. Another guest appearance comes from labelmate Phil Perry, who joins in for “Last Chance for Love,” a sparkling slow jam. Back 2 Love works through a multitude of styles, from stomping house with pure disco-soul lineage (the title track and “Miracle”) to highly melodic retro-modern pop (“The Radio Played Our Song”), but the quality of the songs is consistent. Filled with typically refined adult contemporary R&B and some pleasant surprises, this is among Maysa’s most pleasing solo albums. –AllMusic Review by Andy Kellman

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88.2kHz  | Time – 01:14:46 minutes | 1,61 GB | Genre: Metal
Official Digital Download – Source: PonoMusic | ©  Warner Bros. Records
Recorded: Sound City Studios, Van Nuys, CA, Shangri La Studios, Malibu, CA and HQ in San Rafael, CA from April 2007 to May 2008.

Call Death Magnetic Kirk Hammett’s revenge. Famously browbeaten into accepting Lars Ulrich and producers Bob Rock’s dictum that guitar solos were “dated” and thereby verboten for 2003’s St. Anger — a fraught recording chronicled on the 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster — Metallica’s lead guitarist dominates this 2008 sequel, playing with an euphoric fury not heard in years, if not decades. This aesthetic shift isn’t because Hammett suddenly rules the band: powerless to add solos to St. Anger, he couldn’t reinstate them without the blessing of Ulrich and James Hetfield, the politburo of Metallica. The duo suffered some combination of shame and humility in the wake of the muddled St. Anger and Monster, convincing these two unmovable forces to change direction. They ditched longtime producer Rock — who’d helmed every album since 1991’s breakthrough blockbuster Metallica — in favor of Rick Rubin, patron saint of all veteran rockers looking to reconnect with their early spark. Rubin may be the go-to producer for wayward superstars but as the producer of Slayer, he’s also rooted in thrash, so he understands the core of Metallica’s greatness and gently steers them back to basics on Death Magnetic.

Of course, Metallica’s basics are pretty complex: intertwined guitar riffs, frenetic solos, and thunderous double-bass drums stitched together as intricate seven-minute suites. Metallica slowly weaned themselves away from labyrinthine metal during the ’90s, tempering their intensity, straightening out riffs, spending nearly as much time exploring detours as driving the main road, all the while losing sight of their identity. This culminated in the confused St. Anger, a transparent and botched attempt at returning to their roots, crippled by the chaos surrounding the departure of bassist Jason Newsted. With all their problems sorted out in public — including replacing Newsted with Robert Trujillo, who acquiesces to the Metallica custom of being buried far, far in the mix — the group embraces every gnarled, ugly thing they eschewed in the years since “Metallica.” Death Magnetic bounces the band back to the days before Bob Rock, roughly sounding as if it could come after …And Justice for All. Such a deliberate revival of the glory days can be tricky, as it could make a group seem stuck in the past — or, just as badly, they can get essential elements wrong — but Death Magnetic is a resounding success because they hunker down and embrace their core strengths, recognizing that their greatest asset is that nobody else makes noise in the same way as they do.

That’s the pleasure of Death Magnetic: hearing Metallica sound like Metallica again. Individual songs and, especially, Hetfield’s lyrics — less the confessional ballast of St. Anger, more a traditional blend of angst and terror — are secondary to how the band sounds, how they spit, snarl, and surge, how they seem alive. Metallica isn’t replicating moves they made in the ’80s, they’re reinvigorated by the spirit of their early years, adding shading they’ve learned in the ’90s, whether it’s the symphonic tension of “The Unforgiven III” or threading curdled blues licks through the thrash. Listening to the band play, it’s hard not to thrill at Metallica’s mastery of aggression and escalation. There is no denying that the band is older and settled, no longer fueled by the hunger and testosterone that made their ’80s albums so gripping, but on Death Magnetic older doesn’t mean less potent. Metallica is still vitally violent and on this terrific album — a de facto comeback, even if they never really went away — they’re finally acting like they enjoy being a great rock band. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine
