After paying dues for over 15 years, Etta Jones (1928-2001) became an overnight sensation with the release of this, her first Prestige album. While the title song was the catalyst that fueled the singer’s belated discovery, not to mention one of the few singles released by an independent jazz label of the period to attain gold record status, the remaining nine tracks give equal evidence of the spontaneous phrasing and deep emotional commitment that allowed Jones to excel with such rare consistency. Blending the influences of Billie Holiday and more blues-centered vocalists, and supported by an exceptional quintet featuring Frank Wess and Richard Wyands, Jones turned Don’t Go to Strangers into the cornerstone of a career that would see her produce six more Prestige albums in the Sixties, and that kept her among the jazz vocal elite for the next four decades.

„Don’t Go to Strangers was Etta Jones’ first album for the independent jazz label Prestige when it was released in 1960 (having been recorded in a single session on June 21 of that year), and although Jones had been releasing records since 1944, including a dozen sides for RCA in 1946 and an album for King Records in 1957, she was treated as an overnight sensation when the title tune from the album went gold, hitting the Top 40 on the pop charts and reaching number five on the R&B charts. An elegant ballad on an album that had several of them, including the masterful ‘If I Had You’ and a marvelous reading of ‘All the Way,’ a song usually identified with Frank Sinatra, ‘Don’t Go to Strangers’ featured Jones’ airy, bluesy phrasing and uncanny sense of spacing, and was very much a jazz performance, making its success on the pop charts all the more amazing. Listen to Jones’ restructuring of the melody to the opening track, the old chestnut ‘Yes Sir, That’s My Baby,’ to hear a gifted jazz singer sliding and shifting the tone center of a song like a veteran horn player, all the while leaving the melody still recognizable, but refreshing it until it stands revealed anew. Apparently there were no additional tracks cut at the session, since bonus material has never surfaced on any of the album’s subsequent reissues, although that’s hardly a problem, because as is, Don’t Go to Strangers is a perfect gem of a recording.“ –AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett

Emilie-Claire Barlow continues to endear herself with her relaxed, polished demeanour, her charming humour, and a VOICE OF UNFORGETTABLE BEAUTY. Canada’s incomparable vocal jazz jewel, Emilie-Claire Barlow’s 10th album is all about big change. It has a big sound, backed by Netherland’s 69-musician-strong Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley, which accompanies Barlow’s five-piece band. This album is fresh, it sounds big, arranged to perfection, record & mastered with surgical precision but at the end of the day it is all about Emilie’s flawless voice.

The Juno award-winning Emilie-Claire Barlow is now clearly established as one of Canada’s very best jazz vocalists. She has also developed into an ace arranger, and both talents coalesce to stunning effect on Clear Day, the most ambitious offering yet in a prolific discography (it’s her 11th album). Her interpretive gifts and pure vocals are displayed in fresh versions of tunes from a wide range of artists (Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon and Van Morrison to Coldplay, David Bowie and Queen, and Pat Metheny). All the songs were chosen to help tell the chronological story of a recent emotionally turbulent period in her life. Barlow and co-producer Steve Webster recruited Amsterdam’s world-renowned 70-piece Metropole Orkest (Elvis Costello) and conductor Jules Buckley to bring some of these songs a gloriously rich orchestral sound.

Released in 1953, Songs for Young Lovers features classic songs such as “I Get a Kick Out of You”, “A Foggy Day”, and “My Funny Valentine”. All songs on the album were conducted by Nelson Riddle, and all except for “Like Someone in Love” were arranged by George Siravo. The album was one of 50 recordings chosen in 2002 by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.

Songs for Young Lovers was the first album Frank Sinatra recorded for Capitol, as well as his first collaboration with Nelson Riddle. It was also one of the first — arguably the very first — concept album. Sinatra, Riddle, and producer Voyle Gilmore decided that the new album format should be a special event, featuring a number of songs arranged around a specific theme; in addition, the new format was capable of producing a more detailed sound, which gave Riddle more freedom in his arrangements and orchestrations. Songs for Young Lovers is a perfect example of this. Supported by a small orchestra, Sinatra and Riddle create an intimate, romantic atmosphere on the record, breathing new life into standards like “My Funny Valentine,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” and “A Foggy Day.” There is a breezy confidence to Sinatra’s singing, and Riddle’s arrangements are more complex than they initially appear. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Recorded: March 20-22, 1961 Capitol Studio A, Hollywood, Los Angeles

The final album in the trilogy of Frank Sinatra collaborations with conductor and arranger Billy May, this 1961 release follows Come Fly With Me and Come Dance With Me! and served as a showcase for Capitol’s new Full Dimensional Stereo.

“Billy May did some fine stuff here with eight trumpets, four French horns, a tuba, six trombones, two bass trombones, rhythm, percussion and a harp. From the liner notes: ‘Working from this unusual instrumentation, Billy split the brass into sections which answer or echo each other and come through with backing in the same class as Frank’s singing.’” –Nancy Sinatra

Arranged by Billy May, Come Swing with Me! was Frank Sinatra’s final swing session for Capitol Records. The album falls somewhere between the carefree Come Fly with Me and the hard-swinging Come Dance with Me!, borrowing elements of the humor of Fly and the intense, driving rhythms of Dance. Recorded without strings or saxes, the brass-heavy sound of the album was noticeable, but it wasn’t nearly as distinctive as the ping-ponging stereo effects of the album. With its extreme stereo separation, Come Swing with Me! has a bizzare, off-kilter feel that is accentuated by Sinatra’s restless vocals. At the time of recording the album, Sinatra was also recording I Remember Tommy for Reprise and his affections were with his new label. That doesn’t mean he sounds careless on Come Swing with Me! — in fact, his intense, speedy energy gives the album an edge that distinguishes the record. The album might not be as special as his two previous May collaborations, but it does have enough genuine gems to make it necessary. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Recorded: December 9, 22, 23, 1958 at Capitol Studio A, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California

Come Dance with Me! is an album by American vocalist Frank Sinatra, released in 1959. Come Dance with Me! was Sinatra’s most successful album, spending two and a half years on the Billboard charts. Stereo Review wrote in 1959 that “Sinatra swaggers his way with effortless verve through an appealing collection of bouncy standards, aptly described in the album notes as “vocals that dance”.” At the Grammy Awards of 1960, Come Dance with Me! won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, as well as Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance, Male. Billy May won the Grammy Award for Best Arrangement. Come Dance With Me stayed on Billboard’s Pop album chart for 140 weeks, peaking at #2.

Working with Billy May again, Frank Sinatra recorded his hardest swing album ever with Come Dance with Me! Driven by an intensely swinging horn section, the album has a fair share of slower numbers, but the songs that make the biggest impression are the up-tempo cuts. With May’s charts wildly careening all over the place, Sinatra relies on his macho swagger; as a result, Come Dance with Me! is an intoxicating rush of invigorating dance songs. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Designed as a musical trip around the world, Come Fly With Me was Frank Sinatra’s first collaboration with arranger/conductor, Billy May. Recorded at Capitol Studios and released in 1958, Come Fly With Me spent five weeks at number one on the charts. It was also Grammy-nominated for Album of the Year. Come Fly With Me was recorded in true stereo but was mixed to mono for its release, a standard practice by Capitol records at the time.

Constructed around a light-hearted travel theme, Come Fly With Me, Frank Sinatra’s first project with arranger Billy May, was a breezy change of pace from the somber Where Are You. From the first swinging notes of Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen’s “Come Fly With Me” — which is written at Sinatra’s request — it’s clear that the music on the collection is intended to be fun. Over the course of the album, Sinatra and May travel around the world in song, performing standards like “Moonlight in Vermont” and “April in Paris,” as well as humorous tunes like “Isle of Capri” and “On the Road to Mandalay.” May’s signature bold, brassy arrangements give these songs a playful, carefree, nearly sarcastic feel, but never is the approach less than affectionate. In fact, Come Fly With Me is filled with varying moods and textures, as it moves from boisterous swing numbers to romantic ballads, and hitting any number of emotions in between. There may be greater albums in Sinatra’s catalog, but few are quite as fun as Come Fly With Me.

Released in 1957 on Capitol, A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra is Frank’s first-ever, full-length Christmas album. It features the Ralph Brewster Singers along with an orchestra conducted by Gordon Jenkins and includes the holiday favorite “Mistletoe and Holly,” co-written by Sinatra himself.

It can be argued that Sinatra never sounded fully comfortable singing Christmas carols, and this record is no exception. While his other albums of the period are bursting with dash and sensitivity, this is a distant, even slightly lackadaisical performance. It’s no dud on its own, but compared to the classic Christmas records of other artists, and especially to Sinatra’s best work, it is unusually somber. Gordon Jenkins’ adventurous arrangements are occasionally intrusive, but the album has touches of magic during “The Christmas Waltz” and “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear”.

Tracklist:
01 – Jingle Bells
02 – The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You)
03 – Mistletoe And Holly
04 – I’ll Be Home For Christmas (If Only In My Dreams)

Watertown is a later album by Frank Sinatra and tells a heartbreaking story in a series of soliloquies. It is the only album on which Sinatra sang over pre-recorded instrumental tracks. The songs were written by producer Bob Gaudio (of The Four Seasons) and Jake Holmes. Some of the songs from the album were later covered by artists such as Nina Simone (“For A While”) and Cake (“What’s Now Is Now”).

Watertown is Frank Sinatra’s most ambitious concept album, as well as his most difficult record. Not only does it tell a full-fledged story, it is his most explicit attempt at rock-oriented pop. Since the main composer of Watertown is Bob Gaudio, the author of the Four Seasons’ hits “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” “Walk Like a Man,” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” that doesn’t come as a surprise. With Jake Holmes, Gaudio created a song cycle concerning a middle-aged, small-town man whose wife had left him with the kids. Constructed as a series of brief lyrical snapshots that read like letters or soliloquies, the culminating effect of the songs is an atmosphere of loneliness, but it is a loneliness without much hope or romance — it is the sound of a broken man. Producer Charles Calello arranged musical backdrops that conveyed the despair of the lyrics. Weaving together prominent electric guitars, keyboards, drum kits, and light strings, Calello uses pop/rock instrumentations and production techniques, but that doesn’t prevent Sinatra from warming to the material. In fact, he turns in a wonderful performance, drawing out every emotion from the lyrics, giving the album’s character depth.

This seasonal collection of Yule tide classics sung by Frank Sinatra in his late-1950s incarnation, with impeccable string arrangements by Nelson Riddle, contains convincing performances of favorites like ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem,’ ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,’ and ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas.’
It’s a tribute to Sinatra’s versatility and professionalism that this oft-sung set comes off sounding simultaneously fresh, original, and heartwarming. Includes liner notes by Pete Welding.

Gordon Jenkins’ adventurous arrangements are occasionally intrusive, but the album has touches of magic during “The Christmas Waltz” and “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.” —Jim Smith

Released in 1957, the same year as Elvis Presley’s hit Christmas album, Sinatra’s first Christmas record is like a conservative op-ed in response to the King’s subtly radical bumrush. It’s the essence of Eisenhower’s America, bottled and giftwrapped with a red and white bow on top. This was the fourth album Sinatra recorded in a very good year, and he sings like he has the universe effortlessly balanced on the brim of his hat. At times the arrangements and back-up singing get in the way. But when he taps the nostalgic tug of ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’ and ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” it’s mistletoe magic. —Rolling Stone

Closer to Home is the third studio album by Grand Funk Railroad, originally released in 1970 by Capitol Records. Produced by Terry Knight, the album reached RIAA gold record status in 1970, making it Grand Funk’s third gold record in one year. The album featured three singles, “Nothing is the Same”, “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)”, and “Mean Mistreater”. Closer to Home was the album that really helped Grand Funk Railroad break through to a level of commercial success that put them on the same level as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

Closer to Home, the trio’s third album, was the record that really broke them through to the commercially successful level of metal masters such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Rather than rushing headlong into their typical hard, heavy, and overamplified approach, Grand Funk Railroad began expanding their production values. Most evident is the inclusion of strings, the acoustic opening on the disc’s leadoff cut, “Sins a Good Man’s Brother,” as well as the comparatively mellow “Mean Mistreater.” But the boys had far from gone soft. The majority of Closer to Home is filled with the same straight-ahead rock & roll that had composed their previous efforts. The driving tempo of Mel Schacher’s viscous lead basslines on “Aimless Lady” and “Nothing Is the Same” adds a depth when contrasted to the soul-stirring and somewhat anthem-like “Get It Together.” The laid-back and slinky “I Don’t Have to Sing the Blues” also continues the trend of over-the-top decibel-shredding; however, instead of the excess force of other bands, such as MC5, Grand Funk Railroad are able to retain the often-elusive melodic element to their heavy compositions.

From Russia with Love is the soundtrack for the second James Bond film of the same name. This is the first series film with John Barry as the primary soundtrack composer.

The first James Bond soundtrack composed from beginning to end by John Barry, From Russia With Love set the pattern for the score of every movie that followed in the series – except for the title song (sung by Matt Munro) which, in this particular instance, was the least impressive element of the soundtrack. In later releases, the producers would see the value of getting singers perceived as a little more on the cutting edge of popular music in one way or another, and they would gain some major hits as a result. However, in this case it was the instrumental music that was among the most startling and unusual ever heard in a film score up to that time, beginning with “007,” a horn-driven piece with a driving beat. (New versions of “007” would end up in two of the next three Bond movies as well as several more that followed.) The other highlight of this flavorful soundtrack was “Girl Trouble,” a suspense theme that played off the dynamics of a solo cello, strings, and horns in a relentless beat; this piece was so inspiring as action music that a big chunk of it was used as the opening and closing theme of a local news show in New York for decades. Everything on this album sounded special in one way or another – whether the actual music or the dynamics and timbres involved – and although it never yielded a hit single, From Russia With Love deservedly remained in print for decades on vinyl.

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack – Score: Music Composed and Conducted by John Barry

John Barry seems to have that unique ability to transform the genres he tackles; for Dances with Wolves , he brought to the Western epic a voice of romance, drama and moments of melancholy. The beauty of his Oscar-winning score on SACD, bringing you Barry’s complete score for the first time!

John Barry’s fifth Oscar-winning score is a profoundly moving body of music, generally (though not entirely) elegiac in tone, very much like the movie for which it was written. It’s also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early- to mid-’60s. The main title theme uses some of those devices — dense, heavy string passages adjacent to trumpet calls — but it is hardly representative of the full score. The real heart of Dances With Wolves is the pensive, tragic “John Dunbar Theme,” which is far closer in spirit to Barry’s music for Somewhere in Time or They Might Be Giants — films (and scores) far removed from the Bond movies. It seems as though, when Barry is asked to write music for characters who are complex and troubled (Bond is neither), he delivers the goods in the guise of musical material that reflects those elements. Some elements familiar from the Bond films can be found scattered throughout this soundtrack, particularly in the violin-driven “stings” that open “The Death of Timmons” and the horn calls that herald its closing; in the string parts underneath the hyperactive percussion of “Pawnee Attack” that might’ve been lifted right out of From Russia With Love; and also in “Stands With a Fist Remembers,” with its secondary violin part in the upper register of the strings. Much of Dances With Wolves, however, shows a broadening of Barry’s sound — he uses the vast canvas of Kevin Costner’s movie and Dean Semler’s cinematography as the basis for one of the most richly scored soundtracks of his career, working with one of the largest orchestras ever heard in one of his films; “Journey to Fort Sedgewick,” “Kicking Bird’s Gift,” “Two Socks at Play,” “The Death of Cisco,” and “Journey to the Buffalo Killing Ground” have an almost Copland-like majesty about them, and “The Buffalo Hunt” is one of the finest pieces of music the man ever wrote. At times, it sounds as though Barry had every string and horn player in Los Angeles present, and topped it all out with an oversized percussion section, but none of the music or the scoring here sound excessive.

There are both goodbyes and new beginnings throughout Lissie’s third album, My Wild West, reflecting her recent move from California back to her native Midwest. There is, therefore, a wistfulness, perhaps even a mournfulness, that makes the gentler country-flavoured songs like Together or Apart and Ojai extremely emotive. Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt come to mind on these numbers; some tracks equally boast some U2-esque rock sounds, including the title track and Don’t You Give Up On Me, although this is not where we see the best of the young artist. The nasal twang to her gripping vocals is among several redeeming features on an LP that is an admirable, if not spectacular, addition to the catalogue of an impressively consistent artist to date.

Songways is the highly anticipated follow-up to the trio’s acclaimed 2011 release. Esteemed Italian pianist Stefano Battaglia and his renowned trio presents a new selection of chants, hymns and dances, all written by Battaglia and inspired by descriptions of visionary places from art and literature – from Alfred Kubin, Jonathan Swift or Charles Fourier to Italo Calvino. This instant classic finds a new balance between archaic modal pre-tonal chants and dances, pure tonal songs and hymns and abstract textures.

In some ways, Songways is a logical extension of the Stefano Battaglia Trio’s immediate predecessor, 2011’s River of Anyder. It is only the second date by this fine trio, whose other members are bassist Salvatore Mairoe and drummer Roberto Dani. On River of Anyder, the group established a rich harmonic language that balanced lyric composition with ranging improvisation. If anything, that balance is retained here, but also encompasses a larger harmonic world. Once more recorded at the warm, natural-sounding Auditorio Radiotelevisione Svizzera in Lugano, Battaglia again sought literary references to open up his music. The fictional created a musical geography in Battaglia’s imagination to compose terrains for the trio to explore. On Songways, Battaglia’s tunes free up Dani — almost entirely — from the confines of the timekeeping. Here he functions primarily as a deft texturalist and imaginative colorist — he only seemingly keeps time on a couple of cuts. Check the way his exquisite cymbal work erases margins between space, color, and melody in opener “Euphonia Elegy.” As Battaglia’s rustling arpeggios offer a direction, Mairoe picks it up and develops a melody around which the pianist responds and then travels. Dani’s cymbals accent, highlight, whisper, rumble, and echo throughout, keeping the songlike nature of the lyricism from ever becoming fixed. Dani does keep time on “Ismaro,” titled for the city Odysseus attacked in Homer’s poem. Its near-folk melody is stated by the pianist with the bassist helping to create a kind of bridge, but that’s a feint; it’s only the marker for the improvisation to begin. The title track nods to Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, but it is also influenced by that dialogic narrative that exists in the geographies between and shared by Battaglia’s new forms and modern jazz. The pianist uses phrases from hymnody and juxtaposes them against post-bop amid an elegant flurry of arpeggios as Mairoe provides pulse and lyric counterpoint. “Vondervotteimittis,” titled for the clock-obsessed town in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Devil in the Belfry, and “Monte Analogo” named for René Daumal’s novel, are the two pieces here in which Battaglia’s piano provides a conscious dissonance as a melodic device. Dani’s bells, cymbals, and rumbling tom-toms highlight the tension and drama, but are countered by the more gently inquisitive investigations from Mairoe. On “Babel Hymn,” Dani’s tom-toms offer movement and drama. The modal inquiry by Battaglia is underscored by an insistent yet unobtrusive lyric repetition from Mairoe, who ever so slowly opens up the frame for the tune to move further afield. Songways is European jazz rooted deep in the Italian tradition: it wears both its classicism and post-vanguard lyricism plainly, in the process creating a deft, instinctive, and highly expressionistic music.

Twisted Sister’s third studio album, originally released in 1984, including the hits “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock”. It also features the power ballad “The Price”. According to RIAA certification, Stay Hungry gained multi-platinum status with U.S. sales of more than 3,000,000 copies.

After nearly a decade trying to make it to “The Show,” Twisted Sister were finally up to bat. Their first album was a wild swing, their second had flown just barely foul, but with their third – the unstoppable Stay Hungry – the New York veterans finally hit one out of the park. And few bands were as deserving. Having paid their dues on the tough as nails N.Y.C. club scene (half of the band looked like the Ramones, the other half like the Dictators, and Dee Snider looked like, well, Dee Snider), Twisted Sister had finally worn down the opposition and truly arrived. With their comedic videos and bubblegum undertones, hit singles “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock” helped the band bridge the “beauty gap” into MTV acceptance, and a competent power ballad in “The Price” would cement their consumer-friendly status. But it was the irrefutable menace of tracks like “The Beast,” “S.M.F.,” and the massive “Burn in Hell” that connected with their loyal fans and displayed Twisted Sister’s true power. Equally grim, “Captain Howdy” and “Street Justice” – the two songs comprising the “Horror-teria” suite (later the basis for Snider’s ill-fated movie project Strangeland) – are a cross between Alice Cooper and its stated source of influence, Stephen King. And don’t forget the all-out metal ambition of the title track. Ironically, the album’s very mainstream appeal would alienate their core heavy metal fan base and spell the band’s overexposure-induced fall from grace, but for this brief moment, Twisted Sister were truly the “talk of the town, top of the heap”.
