With the Thirty Years War raging around them, Lutherans considered death to be the true fulfillment of their earthly life. Prince Heinrich von Reuss organised all the details of his funeral in advance, from the music that would be sung – to be composed and then performed by Heinrich Schütz during the funeral ceremony – to the coffin itself. Our programme includes not only the renowned Musicalische Exequien but also other funeral motets by Schütz, one of which was composed on the death of his friend Johann Hermann Schein. After the success of their CD of works by Samuel Scheidt (RIC 301), Vox Luminis now take up the challenge of one of Schützs greatest sacred works. It should be noted that the CD cover art is a photograph of a section of the coffin that Reuss himself had ordered; Prince Heinrich XIII Reuss has most generously allowed its use by Ricercar for this recording. The coffin is made of solid copper; its richly decorated exterior is studded with cartouches that contain liturgical texts selected by the deceased prince.

The 12 voices of Belgian ensemble Vox Luminis put their faith in tonal focus and sweetly balanced textures. Though one might expect from that a certain coolness, their singing produces music-making of intimate, aching beauty. The recorded sound, gently resonant, is perfect. This great work is preceded by other funeral motets by Schütz, including two more settings of the Nunc dimittis and a heartfelt musician s memorial to the composer Schein. In Vox Luminis s hands even the four verses of Luther s unison chorale Mit Fried und Freud tugs at the heart. A marvellous disc. – Gramophone

The accordion was not even known in Haydn’s time, and playing the composer’s keyboard concertos on the instrument carries a strong whiff of novelty for novelty’s sake. Yet the four works performed here by Swiss accordionist Viviane Chassot, one of the accordion’s few players in the classical sphere, are more than listenable. The combination clicks for several reasons. First is that Haydn’s concertos specifically, with their rather muted contrast between soloist and orchestra, work better than Mozart or a later composer might have. Second is the sheer beauty of Chassot’s playing. Sample one of the slow movements, such as the “Adagio cantabile” of the Keyboard Concerto in G major, Hob. 18/4, to hear the shades of timbre she brings out from her accordion; given the instrument’s limited dynamic range, the timbres of the accordion almost take the place of dynamic shifts. It’s a wholly novel effect. Third is the crack work of the Kammerorchester Basel, which lays out flat, fast tutti that sets Chassot’s playing off most advantageously. Sony’s church sound is a bit brittle, and it’s hard to call this essential, but it’s certainly a pleasant hour of Haydn for accordion lovers or anyone else.

Nonesuch Records releases an album of Bach works recorded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, mandolinist Chris Thile, and bassist Edgar Meyer, Bach Trios, on April 7, 2017. The album comprises works by J.S. Bach originally written for keyboard instruments, plus one sonata for viola da gamba. In 2011, Ma, Thile, and Meyer—along with Stuart Duncan—collaborated on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, which won two Grammy Awards.

Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer’s first recording together was the 1996 album Appalachia Waltz, which also featured fiddler Mark O’Connor; that album was followed by Appalachian Journey, also with O’Connor, in 2000. Meyer and Thile also began playing together nearly two decades ago, and first performed live as a duo in 2003. They have made two duo albums, 2008’s Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile and the Grammy–winning 2014 record Bass & Mandolin.

Thile then joined Meyer on Ma’s 2008 holiday album, Songs of Joy and Peace, before the trio reunited, along with Stuart Duncan, for The Goat Rodeo Sessions, an album of original tunes drawing from the musicians’ backgrounds in bluegrass, classical, and American roots music. The Goat Rodeo Sessions debuted at number twenty-three on the Billboard 200 chart and number one on the classical and classical crossover charts, as well as number one on the bluegrass chart, where it stayed for eleven weeks. The album was also critically praised, with the Los Angeles Times calling it “haunting, invigorating, often breathtaking.”

As Ma told Billboard at that time: “How often do you work with people who are master virtuosos and also master improvisers and composers, who know at least two musical traditions unbelievably well?” He continued, “It’s just extraordinary when you have people who can actually show on their instruments what they’re thinking at any moment, without a delay. As soon as you think it, it gets transferred in your neuromusculature immediately into sound.”

The New York Times said of Yo-Yo Ma, who is considered one of today’s foremost interpreters of Bach, “Other cellists hear Bach’s suites the same as Mr. Ma, but few if any have the technical means to transfer their imaginings so precisely into sound.” Ma maintains a balance between his engagements as soloist with orchestras worldwide and his recital and chamber music activities. His discography includes more than one hundred albums, eighteen of which have won Grammy Awards. Ma also serves as the Artistic Director of Silkroad, an organization he founded to promote cross-cultural performance and collaborations. More than eighty works have been commissioned specifically for the Silk Road Ensemble, which tours annually. Ma also serves as the Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Negaunee Music Institute and in 2016 was appointed Artistic Advisor to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Named after the platinum-selling American winner of the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Cold War Moscow in 1958, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition was established in 1962 and its gold medal is recognized as “one of the most prestigious prizes in classical music” (The Guardian). Every four years, winners are chosen by an esteemed panel of judges and awarded significant cash and other prizes, as well as three years of comprehensive career management and concert tours.

Previous laureates include Radu Lupu, Olga Kern, Joyce Yang, Haochen Zhang, Vadym Kholodenko and Nobuyuki Tsujii.

30 young competitors from 16 nations aged between 18 and 30 will be welcomed May 25–June 10 2017, in Fort Worth, Texas, to compete for Gold and more than $200,000 in prizes.

The entire competition will be webcast through Medici.tv and hosted by piano duo Anderson & Roe.

Decca Gold in collaboration with The Cliburn will release an album of live performances from the winner, taken from select recital performances across the competition.

Interestingly enough, this production was funded by fans through the Pledge Music website. The positive outcome should instill delight and a sense of fulfillment for the band’s patrons, perhaps one of the densest incarnations of a progressive-rock trio imaginable. Tony Levin’s (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel) Chapman Stick work, coupled with Markus Reuter’s (Tuner, Europa String Choir) Touch Guitar articulations communicate an intimidating presence. Otherwise, first-call session drummer Pat Mastelotto toured and recorded with Levin during their stints with latter-day King Crimson.

Deep is amassed with sonorous bass parts and the frontline’s sinewy and effects-laced phrasings amid booming choruses, as the trio strategically incorporates odd-metered beats into its Herculean gait. The final and lengthiest piece on the album is “Whale Watch.” Here, they navigate through a labyrinth of orchestrations propagating ominous intentions, yet temper the fiery onslaught with calming metrics. And the musicians raise the pitch by launching into a weighty and shifting King Crimson-like vibe where Levin and Reuter employ various distortion techniques and monster bass lines atop Mastelotto’s resonating fills and hammering backbeats.

With stormy cadenzas and gradually climactic momentum, the band sails through the high seas via a massive wave of sound while extracting numerous hues from their respective instruments. The Stick Men eventually wind matters down a bit, and soar onward with fuzz-toned chord voicings and meticulously designed single note riffs. Overall, they yield an ungodly musical environment, spiced with generously proportioned, and at times, awe-inspiring progressions—boosted with the exhaustive dominion of a goliath on the loose.

Recorded in 1964, Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Song Book was recorded at Radio Recorders Studio 10-H in Los Angeles, California with Nelson Riddle and his Orchestra. The album was the only songbook collection Ella recorded that concentrates on the work of a lyricist instead of a composer. Riddle created wonderfully lush arrangements, and the album was Ella’s fifth and final collaboration with the conductor and arranger during her years on the Verve label.

Along with her Rodgers and Hart collection, this is one of the best of Ella Fitzgerald’s songbooks. Fitzgerald’s assured and elegant voice is a perfect match for Mercer’s urbane lyrics and Nelson Riddle’s supple arrangements. In light of this decorous setting, it’s not surprising that Mercer’s swagger-heavy numbers like “I Wanna Be Around” and “One More For My Baby” are skipped in favor of more poised selections such as “Early Autumn” and “Skylark.” Even traditionally hard-swinging numbers such as “Day In Day Out” and “Something’s Gotta Give” are kept in check with Riddle’s vaporous, flute-heavy backing and Fitzgerald’s velvet tone. Slower numbers like “Laura” and “Midnight Sun” add dramatic contrast with their enigmatic tonal backdrops and elongated vocal phrasing. Fitzgerald’s Mercer songbook has become something of an overlooked gem partly because of the popularity of her Cole Porter and Gershwin collections. It’s a shame, because this songbook is beautifully executed by Fitzgerald and Riddle and contains wonderful Mercer collaborations with, among others, Harold Arlen and Hoagy Charmichael. This is definitely one for any Fitzgerald fan and not a bad introduction to her vast catalog.

Max Richter wrote the score for “White Boy Rick”, the story of teenager Richard Wershe Jr., who became an undercover informant for the FBI during the 1980s and was ultimately arrested for drug-trafficking and sentenced to life in prison. Directed by Yann Demange and starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Taking a large musical work such as an opera, and arranging it into a piece of chamber music, can be quite a daunting task, as you may imagine. But it had been done before, especially in the late 19th century. Taking Sergei Prokofiev’s masterpiece, The Fiery Angel, and recomposing – no, re-imagining – it into a half-hour story that completely conveys the story with just two instruments, that’s a monumental task. A task which Maya Fridman took upon herself in 2015, as part of her Master’s Degree in cello performance (for which she received the highest honors, cum laude).

To be able to create this arrangement, she needed to work out a way to portray all these different roles of the story with just two instruments, cello and piano. The hysterical, erratic Renata, the knight Ruprecht, Madiël, the Fiery Angel himself, and even figures such as the Village Witch and the people at the convent in Trier, all are portrayed wonderfully by Maya’s arrangement for these two instruments. Her famously expressive playing style came in perfectly to suit the various timbres her arrangement requires.

This encounter, recorded live in Colorado, speaks to the free exchange of ideas and mutual inspiration that exists between many jazz and contemporary classical musicians. Medeski, Martin & Wood, a pre-eminent electric-jazz trio for nearly 30 years, gains incredible new dimension when partnered with the 20-piece chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound under the direction of Alan Pierson. Despite the number of players involved, much of the music is texturally spare and restrained, aglow with harmonic mystery. The dark, dissonant abstraction of “Coral Sea” and the electro-acoustic sprawl of “Eye of Ra” capture the essence of the project, along with two earlier MMW items, “Anonymous Skulls” and “End of the World Party”, arranged by Alarm’s Courtney Orlando and Stefan Freund, respectively.

Chouchane Siranossian is a rising star of the baroque and classical violin, Jakob Lehmann a virtuoso violinist and orchestral director who frequently conducts Anima Eterna. Together, they embody what the Bruges orchestra and its founder, Jos van Immerseel, have decided to call the ‘Next Generation Anima Eterna’… Today they are presenting Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in its original version.

“We wanted to take a look into Mendelssohn’s workshop. He struggled with his self-diagnosed ‘revision disease’ and always strove to work hard on himself and his creations” says Jakob Lehmann. Chouchane Siranossian keeps on “It was a fascinating experience for me to discover historical research and its implementation on period instruments in collaboration with Anima Eterna Brugge. In my interpretation, I used exclusively the fingerings, bowings and other performance markings of Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim, both of whom rehearsed the work with the composer.”

This recording is rounded off with the Octet, also in its original version, which is longer and has many alterations in instrumentation, harmony and articulation…

Though Merle Travis is known for his brilliant songwriting and fine singing, it is still his guitar playing that remains his most enduring contribution to American music. The syncopated ring of his signature fingerpicking style has gone far beyond the Kentucky coal country where he first heard it as a boy. His earliest recordings were much like the ones included on this album, simple solo acoustic instrumentals later termed, “Travis Pickin’”. It is with an acoustic guitar that the essence of Travis Pickin’ can best be appreciated. Unamplified and unaccompanied in the way Merle first heard the technique played. Every bit of music comes from the hands, the guitar, and the soul of the master, Merle Travis.

It was in 2007 at the Mandolin Symposium in Santa Cruz, California that we first met. We had known about each other, had each other’s recordings and admired each other’s playing, but we had not yet met formally. On our first recording, we were simply trying to find common musical ground with an appreciation for Bach, Brazilian, Bulgarian and Bluegrass music. Our second CD dove into the heart of our favorite composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Third Journey represents the natural settling that has occurred after years of playing and sharing a life together with the bulk of the material culled from mostly American musical forays with a bit of Bach and Brazil tossed in just because we couldn’t help ourselves.

On Third Journey, Mike Marshall and Caterina Lichtenberg deliver impeccable mandolin virtuosity and intuitive interplay.

The popularity of Mississippi John Hurt long after his death speaks to the legendary status this remarkable bluesman. His genuine style of playing and smooth, gentle vocals hold up well over time – this is early country blues, a bit more folkier.

Hurt taught himself to play the guitar around the age of nine. He worked as a sharecropper and played at dances, singing to his melody based, fingerpicking accompaniment. Although Hurt never had success as a recording artist, he was recorded by the Library of Congress in 1964 and Hurt is responsible for other Delta bluesman finding recognization and being brought out of retirement. This fueled the folk and blues revival.

Hurt performed at the 1963 Newport Folk Festival which made him more popular in the folk revival and he performed at colleges, concert halls, coffeehouses and even appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. His fans particularly liked the songs “Salty Dog” and “Candy Man”.

The symphonies in G minor, K. 550 (no. 40), and C Major, K. 551 (no. 41, also known as ‘The Jupiter’) are the ones that most represent Mozart’s symphonic legacy to later generations of musicians. As early as 1800, the popular ‘Great’ G minor Symphony was praised as the ‘painting of a passion-stricken soul’. Like its big sister, the ‘Jupiter’ Symphony in C Major, it numbers among the most-played works in classical music and has been immortalized in countless recordings. Nevertheless, these symphonies – probably the most profound ones before Beethoven – reveal themselves as something quite new in every interpretation. ‘Mozart placed all the dark sides of human existence into his G minor Symphony’, says Herbert Blomstedt, adding that its ‘passion’ continues to fascinate him. The eminent Swedish conductor Herbert Blomstedt, a close associate and regular guest conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, conducted the G minor Symphony in concerts on January 31 and February 1, 2013 and the ‘Jupiter’ Symphony on December 21 and 22, 2017 in the Herkulessaal of Munich’s Residenz.
