Peter grew up in a parish house in Halsteren, the Netherlands, not far from the Belgian border and Antwerpen. This is where his best memories lie, and they are clearly the basis for his further life. During these years he saw a film that made a huge impression on him because the background was played by Miles Davis. The result: in that parish house, Peter would spend hours with his trumpet in a large room with great acoustics. And preferably with the window open — often a neighbour would be sitting on a bench somewhere and enjoying the music too.

If you have known Peter over the years, you know that making music is his greatest love. Every time he picks up his instrument, he is seeking that inner drive and that deep pleasure you gain from music and from your instrument. Even now, in his sixty-fifth year, he still sees this in his mind’s eye as if it were yesterday, and his enthusiasm is provocative and contagious. He can still spend hours in his study and every time he does, he invents something new; always looking for something more beautiful, more moving. And then developing the melody that emerges into a spontaneous, one-time piece. You know a session has been successful when he comes out of his studio with brightly flushed cheeks.

Georg Solti, conducting the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Originally released in 1959. Ravishing string tone and superior dynamics. Indisputedly beautiful string tone in Act One of Traviata. About a minute or so into the last band on side one, one hears the famous Underground subway rumbling beneath Kingsway Hall. The Underground, the Aldrich-Holborn line, was a constant factor to be addressed by Decca engineers.

For a classical ensemble, improvisation is by no means an everyday pursuit. Yet during its 28-year history, Calefax Reed Quintet has repeatedly yielded to the temptation of extemporaneous performance. This often took place in the context of a pre-existing form, style or musical convention, and usually to a modest degree, for instance as part of a larger composition. Calefax, rooted in the eight centuries of music history from which it draws its concert repertoire, is well aware that music, as a rule, is the end result of improvisation and is often notated solely as a favor to the music-reading player. The desire inherent in the group’s past and present goal — to dissect and then reconstruct existing music — has resulted in the countless arrangements the group has performed the world over for nearly three decades. Each of the members is thus not only a performing but a creative artist as well, qualities that also define an improviser. Calefax underscores the importance of continuously exploring the link between these two styles of music-making. This has led to the music on the CD On the Spot.

A survey of music history shows that composers from distinctly disparate periods and locales had surprisingly similar goals in mind. Arranging music for an essentially fixed instrumentation has more than once brought musical parallels to the fore that otherwise might have gone unnoticed. In doing so, the quintet has created a practice for the playing, playful musician with befriended composers from all places and all times. Perhaps this is most applicable to the trumpeter Eric Vloeimans. While he is otherwise difficult to categorize, Vloeimans, with his well-nigh vocal playing style, is undoubtedly the ideal person to guide five classical musicians in the world of improvisation. Along the way he also showed a hunger for the wealth of classical music, willingly allowing members of the quintet in turn to lead him, without sacrificing any of his own uniqueness. Kinan Azmeh and Albert van Veenendaal both composed works especially for the marriage of these two types of musician. Additionally, Ivar Berix and Raaf Hekkema were given free rein to delve into the extensive oeuvre of Eric Vloeimans.

I used to think the accordion was a horrible instrument. An ugly, kitschy sound and a repertoire to match, from commercial tripe and oompah to waltzes for the elderly and circus drollery. In short, music to be given a wide berth. But developments never cease, and you suddenly notice that your opinion has changed. After years and years of studying music, mind you. Your taste buds change. It’s just like with buttermilk, olives and tomatoes. As a child you hated them, and now you find you enjoy the taste. After thorough education at the dinner table, by the way. Trying a little bit, time and again.

Incidentally, there are plenty of listeners who feel that mine is a horrible instrument. Loud, shrill, ugly, militaristic. Think of the Brouwer Brothers, Willy Schobben, Marty and all those other guys with their Golden Trumpets, playing Il Silencio and O mein Papa. I used to like that, but not anymore. Yes, taste remains a complex business.

Back to the accordion. During one of my musical wanderings I wound up in the Belgian town of Rijkevorsel. After a concert there I was having a pint at the bar, and in this lovely Belgian atmosphere the accordion question reared its head again. Was there no accordion player to be found in Belgium that would suit me? ‘But certainly’, the response was, ‘you want our Tuur, then!’ A CD of his was put on forthwith, and the wonderful improvisations by Tuur Florizoone enchanted me on the spot. An appointment with Tuur was quickly made. One phone call, and it was like meeting my brother. This was the beginning of a new duo, that by now can look back on a long series of successful concerts.

There’s another instrument I’m completely in love with — the cello. A sensual instrument, that can take over the task of a bass, but remains light and svelte. A bowed melody on the cello sounds gorgeous, like on a heavier viola, but still agile and pert. And now I’m not only a fan of the instrument, but also of some one who plays it magnificently. He knows his classics, plucks like a jazz virtuoso, bows like a prince, and doesn’t shy away from electronics either. He’s from our neighboring country Germany, and his name is Jrg Brinkmann.

Hypochondriac, the third full-length album from San Diego band The Frights, is an album full of addictively catchy songs about fear and frustration. “Hypochondriac is the most comfortable I’ve been with a record thus far,” says Mikey Carnevale, vocalist/guitarist for The Frights. “I care a lot about these songs because they’re embarrassing and personal.” Produced by FIDLAR frontman Zac Carper (SWMRS, Dune Rats), mixed by Rob Kinelski (Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, 30 Seconds To Mars) and mastered by multiple Grammy Winner Greg Calbi (Arcade Fire, Tame Impala, The War on Drugs); Hypochondriac follows The Frights’ 2016 album You Are Going To Hate This and marks a period of major creative growth for the band (whose lineup also includes bassist Richard Dotson, drummer Marc Finn, and guitarist Jordan Clark).

“I had started to brainstorm where I wanted to go with this record basically the day we released You Are Going To Hate This,” says Carnevale. “At first, I overthought the hell out of it, due to coming down from the high of making our first real album in a real studio with a real producer. So it took about a year or so until I realized that I’m not special and I just forced myself to sit down with an acoustic guitar. What came of that, I think, is a confessional album that I never assumed a band like ours would make.”

A couple of months after graduating from high school, Mikey Carnevale (vocals/guitar) and Richard Dotson (bass) got together as The Frights to play a one off 30 minute set as sort of a joke. The feeling they got from the crowd in their hometown of San Diego inspired them to become a “real” band almost in spite of themselves. Along the way, they recruited Marc Finn (drums) and released You Are Going To Hate This (produced by Zac Carper of FIDLAR) in February 2016. Jordan Clark (guitar) added to the band’s musical prowess in the ensuing year of touring around North America. Having recently made their highly successful UK debut with headline shows in London and appearances at The Great Escape and Dot To Dot, The Frights can’t wait to play their new material on the Hypochondriac North American tour this fall.

The Staples’ story goes all the way back to 1915 in Winona, Mississippi, when patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples entered the world. A contemporary and familiar of Charley Patton’s, Roebuck quickly became adept as a solo blues guitarist, entertaining at local dances and picnics. He was also drawn to the church, and by 1937 he was singing and playing guitar with the Golden Trumpets, a spiritual group based out of Drew, Mississippi. Moving to Chicago four years later, he continued playing gospel music with the Windy City’s Trumpet Jubilees. A decade later Pops Staples (as he had become known) presented two of his daughters, Cleotha and Mavis, and his one son, Pervis, in front of a church audience, and the Staple Singers were born. This is a very rare Stereo The Staple Singers What The World Needs Now Is Love! Epic Records 1968 year.

Thrice has been a staple in the alternative/modern-rock world for over fifteen years. A band known for effortlessly and continuously releasing groundbreaking records, their discography has sold over a 1.5 million copies, and they’ve toured the world with acts like The Deftones, Coheed & Cambria, Rise Against, Circa Survive and Brand New. After a three-year break from writing and touring, the Southern California quartet are back with their first studio album in almost five years.

After a three-year hiatus, Thrice returned with their ninth studio effort – and first since 2011’s Major/Minor – To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere, an album far-removed from the sound of the early-aughts screamo scene they helped popularize. Not as unhinged as their initial breakthrough albums, nor as experimental as their Alchemy Index quadrilogy, Nowhere falls nicely alongside their more straightforward rock works like Vheissu, Beggars, and Major/Minor. This is an album full of power and focus. Vocalist Dustin Kensrue can still scream, but gone is the ferocious wail, instead replaced with a gravelly rasp that can sound like Chris Cornell, Dave Grohl, or Dan Reynolds, depending on the song. That bloody strain opens the album on “Hurricane,” which finds the band – guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge – whipping up a midtempo torrent that swirls into the throat-shredding “Blood on the Sand,” one of a few moments on the album where the early Thrice can be heard (“The Long Defeat” is another nostalgic trip). Many of the best moments take the alternating heavy-pretty sound that their forebears Deftones have perfected and smash it with meandering atmospherics similar to Radiohead. Highlight “The Window” is one such track, weaving an ominous guitar melody through tribal drum beats. There are multiple instances where the band also veer into a distinctly political arena, addressing American political indifference (“Wake Up”), aggression abroad (“Black Honey”), drones (“Death from Above”), and Edward Snowden (“Whistleblower”). The topical concerns show a maturity that comes with age, and the updated priorities that the band members, most of whom are raising families, face. That intensity carries over to the music, creating a very consistent delivery: there aren’t many thrilling peaks or desperate lows, just muscular force. Nothing simply pummels from start to finish. At the close, Thrice opt for a quiet, plaintive finish with the lullaby “Salt and Shadow.” After an album’s worth of controlled adult raging, the pain is washed away with a gorgeous, aqueous swirl that loops directly back into the tempest of “Hurricane.” Fans hoping for a post-hiatus “return to form” shouldn’t expect another “All That’s Left.” For a band that has consistently switched up their direction with each successive album, the biggest surprise is not that To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere once again manages to add fresh ideas to the Thrice catalog, but that a band 17 years into their career still has new directions to travel.

An instrumentalist of supreme talent and creativity, Tom won the attention of judges, lifelong Wheeler collaborator and friend Evan Parker, Edition boss Dave Stapleton and Nick Smart, Head of Jazz at Royal Academy of Music, for his originality and vision. The resulting album, Bloomer, is richly vibrant, energetic and melodic; a recording that will launch the career of this future jazz star. In Evan Parker‘s words: “We are witnessing the birth of a new star in the Jazz firmament.”

From the first notes Bloomer is impactful, youthful and energetic, but it’s Barford’s contribution that hits you immediately: this is an artist with something to say! His sound is immediate, bold and fluent and he’s an improviser adept at resourcing a vast bank of harmonic language. The influences of US saxophonists Seamus Blake or Chris Potter are there, but an original and distinctive new voice is clear and present.

The writing is wonderfully intricate and demanding and yet is exuberantly listenable, imaginative and emotionally gripping. Barford wants his composing to be both thought provoking and beautiful. As he explains, “I want the music to feel as though you’re stepping into another world”.

The Kenny Wheeler Prize was established in 2010 to honour the work and life of that great trumpeter and composer but also to provide a platform for young artists who demonstrate excellence in both performance and composition to kick-start their career. Tom Barford is an artist who emulates many of the same principles that Kenny once did. Both share a kindred spirit in music making and a wonderful humility and pride in the people they make it with.

Bloomer is Tom Barford’s opportunity to begin his own long journey and, with luck, a career as rich and fruitful as that of the great Kenny Wheeler.

Can we get into Beethoven’s creative mind, especially in the last phase of his life when he was coping with severe hearing loss? Tom Beghin’s new recording of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas Opus 109, 110, and 111 is an artistic exploration of how Beethoven’s musicking was shaped by the work environment he created with the help of colleagues and friends.

Not only does Beghin perform Beethoven’s trilogy of pianistic masterpieces on a magnificent new replica of Beethoven’s Broadwood piano, he uses a reconstruction of the Gehörmaschine that was mounted on the composer’s piano so he could continue to create music as his hearing declined.

“You do hear better when you bring your head under this machine, don’t you?,” André Stein asked Beethoven. Two centuries later, we too can bring our heads under the machine and wonder: Do we hear Beethoven differently? Beghin draws us inside the hearing machine, where we feel as well as hear the essence of Beethoven’s rambunctious and irresistibly poetic musical vibrations. Inside the Hearing Machine invites us into the multisensory playground of a deaf composer for whom the machine was more than a hearing aid and who interacted with his instrument through much more than sound.

It’s not unheard of for Christian and gospel singers to make the leap to pop music, but it’s a bit more rare for an artist to pivot in the opposite direction. Tori Kelly’s debut, Unbreakable Smile, was a star-studded affair aimed straight at the charts, executive-produced by Max Martin and featuring a collab with Ed Sheeran. Her second album, Hiding Place, is full-on gospel, but (good news!) Kelly’s pop ambitions remain fully intact. The orchestral-soul flourishes of opener “Masterpiece (feat. Lecrae)” and the funky R&B lilt of “Sunday” seem to proclaim that these are not your grandmother’s Sunday-go-to-meeting church songs. Even when traditional hymns are her source material, as in the devotional “Psalm 42” and the a cappella “Soul’s Anthem (It Is Well),” she transforms them into rousing, rhythmic choruses.

Torun Eriksen’s ‘Luxury and Waste’, her sixth solo album, explores familiar territory in an utterly unfamiliar way. Where her previous album ‘Grand White Silk’ flirted with arrangements of grandeur, she turns now in the opposite direction and gives us new songs in an uncompromising, stripped back sound, shifting between cool, drifting moods and driving pulsating rhythms. Bassist Kjetil Dalland is her sole companion here, and his subtle yet distinctive style is the perfect complement to Torun’s voice, as she invites us into ‘Luxury and Waste’, her most intimate album yet. You will find Jazz, pop and soul, singer/songwriter and blues, all combined in Eriksen’s unique and surprising blend. “I love how music can burst with references, and still have a distinct sound of its own. And I wanted this album to be like that. I have been searching for the core of my songs. We cut everything to the bone, were left with the raw and unpolished and tried to bring this very special light only to be found in the sketches, onto our final versions of the songs.”

The intimacy that the simplicity of the arrangements affords is extraordinary. There is no hiding place, no elaborate mask of artifice. Truth and sincerity, the pure rendering of the song and its essence, and a perfect balance between voice and accompaniment: These things make ‘Luxury and Waste’ a uniquely sublime accomplishment in Torun Eriksen’s career, as well as that of Kjetil Dalland.

The most intriguing thing about Juxtaposition, Vinnie Sperrazza’s recently released recording, is its loose grip on the jazz tradition. The disc’s twelve tracks don’t come with a set of standard, recognizable references. Not unlike many of today’s leading young artists, Sperrazza has absorbed the lessons of the music’s past, and is currently interested in doing things on his own terms instead of dwelling in the accomplishments of his elders. The other essential aspect of the record is it’s overall disposition the antithesis of the dense, loud, unyielding ethos that’s increasingly common across the spectrum of jazz and improvised music. Sperrazza, the composer of nine of the tracks, pens refined, distinctive themes that sometimes hint of something left unsaid. A band consisting Sperrazza’s drums, tenor saxophonist Chris Speed, pianist Bruce Barth, and bassist Peter Brendler produce an enclosed sound that often feels like a collection of interiors. (While listening to most of the tracks I frequently wondered if the music could survive the noisy distractions common to many live performance spaces.)

For over a decade, Jack Tatum aka Wild Nothing has served as an indispensable ambassador for dream pop in all its splendour. Wrapping up his larger-than-life, dreamy melodies in guitars that reverberate out to infinity, the Virginian always pays equal attention to the microphone and the pen. His voice carries the same narrative thread, light and blurry, that Morrissey or Robert Smith used to unfurl amidst clouds of melancholy and surrealism with an uneasy charm… Wild Nothing retains this facility for ill-at-ease music that relates untellable stories. With Indigo, Tatum expands his palette, taking on board more synths and Eighties sounds. “I wanted it to sound like a classic studio record, as close as I could get it there”, explains our sculptor of crystalline melodies. It just boils down to me wanting to fit into some larger narrative, musically, in terms of these artists I love. The records that have influenced the actual sound of Indigo are by Roxy Music, Kate Bush, and Fleetwood Mac; Roxy Music’s Avalon is one of my favourite records ever. I think about how my music will age. Ideas of ‘timeless’ are going to be different so if Indigo is not timeless then it’s at least ‘out of time.'” Jack Tatum’s strength lies in perfectly fusing these archetypal influences with Wild Nothing’s unique characteristics. At the outset, his fourth album offers a cinematic dream pop, as if the four walls of the student digs where Wild Nothing was born had melted away, to reveal wide open spaces… – Max Dembo
