FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 33:45 minutes | 692 MB | Genre: Folk
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Columbia – Legacy

It is not well remembered, but in the wake of the enormous brouhaha over folk musicians going electric, a lot of musicians identified with the pre-rock folk era did go electric, or pop, just for a little while. This late-’60s album by Burl Ives is one of the most ludicrous examples. Perhaps it was felt that getting Ives to cover contemporary material with modern arrangements might appeal to those who felt Ives doing what he’d been doing for so many years was an anachronism (which it was). So he did a set including four Bob Dylan songs, Tim Hardin’s “If I Were a Carpenter,” Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound,” and straight pop tunes like “Gentle on My Mind” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” Bob Johnston, who was producing Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, and Johnny Cash around the time (and would in fact produce Pete Seeger with electric backup at Columbia), produced. But Ives’ voice was shaky, the arrangements bland MOR, and the whole enterprise a mesh of ill-fitting pieces. Nowhere is that more evident than in the title track, which devolves into a grandly intended spoken intonation of the lyrics that succeeds only in getting Ives to make a fool of himself.

Superette is the debut album from revered bassist and composer Chris Lightcap’s electrifying experimental band featuring guitarists Curtis Hasselbring and Jonathan Goldberger and drummer Dan Rieser, along with special guests Nels Cline and John Medeski. A recording for those who seek genre-defying exploration in music, Lightcap and company fearlessly guide the listener through soundscapes of surf, harmolodics, Mali-trance, psych and beyond, delivering a riveting sonic journey. Noted jazz critic Nate Chinen stated at WBGO: The obvious debt to West African pop traditions here cohabits with elements of shimmery surf-rock and gnarly jazz fusion. It’s intrepid stuff but more importantly, it moves.

Swedish singer/songwriter Clara Mae has released her debut EP Sorry For Writing All The Songs About You – available today via Big Beat Records. After spending years studying jazz vocals and piano in her small town of Gävle, Sweden, Clara Mae garnered attention by co-writing with the likes of David Guetta, Tiesto and Martin Jensen. She soon after co-wrote and featured on KREAM’s “Taped Up Heart,” which boasts over 100 million streams and reached the top 25 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. “Clara Mae has been putting in work” said Billboard, while Idolator echoed “Sweden consistently churns out some of the best and brightest voices in pop music, and Clara Mae is no exception.”

The conceptual Sorry For Writing All The Songs About You EP, written with longtime collaborator Cassandra Ströberg, unfurls the story of a turbulent relationship. “We were sitting at a coffee shop in Stockholm, and we realized we kept talking about the same doomed relationship,” Clara Mae recalls. “That’s when we came up with the title. We planned out all of the stages of a relationship and it resulted in six very personal songs.”

“The first track ‘Us’ describes the feeling you have in the beginning of a relationship when you first fall for someone, followed by ‘Rooftop’ which describes the feeling of doubt you get when things don’t work out the way you imagined. ‘I’m Not Her’ talks about my worst fear, the person you loved moving on to someone new, then ‘I Forgot’ describes the scenario of running into your ex and feelings resurface (but you’re also reminded of why it ended). ‘Better Me Better You’ is about looking back and trying to beautify the past instead of just appreciating what you have now, and finally the title track ties it all together and explains that writing these songs was something I had to do to move on.”

The jazz piano trio, a specialism with its own lineage and admirers, is currently alive and well thanks to the artists here on KALEIDOSCOPE. A keyboard master such as Cyrus Chestnut can imbue this tried-and-true format -whose practitioners range from Jelly Roll Morton to Robert Glasper – with a relevance for today’s listeners and expand its parameters without losing sight of its historic past. For this recording Cyrus has arranged 8 compositions by the classical pianists W.A. Mozart, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Eric Satie, taking the classical themes through a series of rhythmic and harmonic turns and twists and subjecting them to a wildly innovative series of transformations. Through it all Cyrus Chestnut emerges as a multi-faceted artist who, using the venerable jazz piano trio format, can refract the past through his own imagination and create something new which is always fresh and exciting.

Emma Blackery can’t remember a time before she wanted to make music. Since picking up her first guitar aged 12, she’s self-released 5 pop-punk EPs, and performed at London’s Wembley Arena and O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Now she is turning her attentions towards pure pop, with the release of her eagerly anticipated debut album, Villains. Inspired by artists including Paramore, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, Emma has worked with renowned producers including Toby Scott (Little Mix, Girls Aloud) and Hutch (Goldfrapp, All Saints) to create a sound that’s fresh, bold, and catchy as hell. Lead single Dirt has had more than 1,000,000 streams and counting, reaching number 5 in the Spotify Viral Chart. “I’ve always written from personal experience”, she says. “I can’t imagine writing about feelings I’ve never had.”Born in 1991 – the same year that the first internet browser was released to the public – it’s fitting that Emma’s career began online. Since starting to share her music on YouTube, she’s amassed a social media reach of 2.2 million fans, alongside a unique perspective on the pitfalls of internet culture. “I’d had experiences before of people being nasty for a like or a retweet but last year someone I considered a friend really hurt me, publicly”, she says. “I ended up taking all social media off my phone and spent a couple of weeks just trying to get back to reality and not be so caught up in it all.”Villains was inspired by that period of reflection, and invites listeners on Emma’s journey from “feeling so paranoid that I risked becoming a person I didn’t like, to letting go of all of that hurt”. Atmospheric album opener Villains Pt. 1 sees her declare, “I am a nightmare. designed to destroy” over a beat that drips with menace. The mood lifts on Agenda – a sunny slice of synth pop – and Fake Friends, which pairs buoyant production with lyrics about two-faced frenemies to create the perfect kiss-off song.

The Bay Area shoegaze group offer up an early listen of their fifth studio album their first in eight years. With the recent reunions of such canonical figures as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride, shoegaze is unquestionably back. Consequently, so is Film School. With their first album since 2010’s Fission, the San Francisco noisemakers have returned with the perfect thing; Bright to Death is not only a loyal adherent to its genre’s tradition, but also exhibits some of the band’s sharpest work to date.

“When this lineup first came together in the early 2000s, I never thought we’d be doing some of our best work fifteen or so years later,” admits singer and guitarist Greg Bertens. “Our [self-titled] album came out in 2006, when bands like The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand were in full swing. The music landscape was totally different then shoegaze was a bad word. That’s changed.”

With Franz Ferdinand and at least one Stroke back in full swing albeit in entirely different corners of the sandbox Film School have found their stride in a significantly less homogenized era for rock, threading the needle previously framed by “Lectric”’s dark trance and “Sunny Day”’s bright guitars. Bright to Death’s forty-minute run time straddles a middle ground of hazy noise pop driven by a darkwave undercurrent. Check out the album in full below a day before its official release via Hauskat Records.

Frank DeVol was never quite a household name, but for a few years in the 1960s, his name came into millions of American households every week, sometimes more than once each week. As a bandleader and arranger, he was one of the busiest working musicians of the ’50s and ’60s, and as a composer, he wrote more than 50 movie scores but it was his theme music for series such as My Three Sons and The Brady Bunch by which he came into our homes and pop culture consciousness.

The final recording by Gary Burton’s classic quartet (how about a reunion someday?) features the vibraphonist/leader, guitarist Larry Coryell, bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bob Moses mixing together aspects of rock, country and folk music in their advanced improvisations. The material (by Mike Gibbs, Burton, Coryell and Bob Dylan) is quite strong, and there are some hints of the avant-garde (including “One, Two, 1-2-3-4” and Burton’s freely improvised solo piece “Dreams”). All of the influential Burton-Coryell recordings (among the earliest fusion records) are currently difficult to find and are deserving reissue as a box set.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Odradek Records

In collaboration with Carl Raven, George King presents his debut CD on Odradek Jazz, Scenes from a Life: a collection of eight pieces perhaps best described as songs without words. The harmonic and melodic language on this album is clear and unhurried. Time is allowed for improvisations to grow out of the simple melodic lines, with subtle electronics used to create a specific atmosphere and a unique sound-world. The music is not virtuosic in character, but will stay with the listener thanks to its pared-down nature. This is music which every listener can relate to on an intellectual as well as purely musical level.

The pieces are inspired by the heightened emotional states everybody experiences. ‘Song for you’, ‘And the world stood still’ and ‘A love sublime’ are dedications to George King’s wife, children, parents and brother.
‘On dark matter’ and ‘Prayer for a lost soul’ are reflections on loss and grief experienced after the death of George’s best friend. ‘Buy the ticket, take the ride’, ‘And I danced among the clouds’ and ‘Mingus trip’ are pictures of vivid experiences from George’s life. ‘Mingus trip’ portrays a Fear and Loathing-style episode at a seemingly endless jam session, complete with helpless rhythm section and numerous tenor saxophonists waiting for their turn to shine.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz  | Time – 41:40 minutes | 505 MB | Genre: Alternative Rock, Indie Rock

CA’s Gold Star – a/k/a Marlon Rabenreither today announced that his new album, Uppers & Downers, will be released on September 7, 2018 via Autumn Tone Records. Noisey premiered new song “Half The Time,” calling it “all sun-dusted Stones vibes, loaded with big piano chords, cracked vocals, and a kind of ecstatic ennui,” while in the UK, Beat Magazine debuted “Chinatown.” Each song illustrates the dual sonic facets of the albums its ‘ups’ (“Half The Time”) and ‘downs’ (“Chinatown”).

Uppers & Downers is stylistically and sonically like a collage, with its varied, timeless tracks each shining brightly as standalones, yet functioning together seamlessly as a whole. While the title refers to the highs and lows of life, the album also looks at everything in the spaces in-between. “The idea was to achieve a deeper scope, a more dynamic range: slow songs, fast songs, less genre specific, capturing all the moods,” says Rabenreither. Throughout, he draws from both his own life and conversations with friends to sing of the deeply personal and observational, with Los Angeles its beauty, dark side, distinct neighborhoods, and ever-changing nature serving as the rich, underlying connective tissue.

Uppers & Downers was recorded at Los Angeles’ historic Valentine Studios, recently renovated and reopened by Rabenreither’s producer friend, Nicolas Jodoin, and where artists including The Beach Boys, Frank Zappa, and Jackson Brown have all made music. It was the first time he’d worked in such a large, professional space, let alone on such hallowed ground, and it compelled Rabenreither to push himself throughout the process, while Jodoin who had also worked on Gold Star’s 2012 debut proved indispensable in shaping the overall lush, vintage sound of Uppers & Downers. The album also features Cameron Avery of Tame Impala (piano on “This Is The Year”), and Cole Alexander and Zumi Rosow of Black Lips (on “Chinatown”).

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 31:26 minutes | 376 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © BMG Rights Management (US) LLC

After performing at the memorial for emo rap icon Lil Peep, who died from a drug overdose at 21, Good Charlotte were inspired to step up as “older brothers in the scene” and tackle the opioid crisis, self-medication and the underlying battle with mental illness on Generation RX.

It’s the kind of focus they needed after comeback album Youth Authority, which at times felt scattershot, especially on the out-of-touch “Old Man Yells At Cloud” song “40 oz. Dream.” It’s helped along by the short runtime (nine songs, one of which is an intro), though that also hurts in feeling like you got a full album.

The cohesion extends to the music, too, as there’s a sullen mood akin to recent Bring Me the Horizon or Linkin Park, thanks to a heavy use of orchestration. After the titular intro track, “Self Help” continually charges itself up and explodes, sharing the most DNA with their pop punk foundation, while followup tracks (and lead singles) “Shadowboxer” and “Actual Pain” rein in the energy, but keep emotions high and hooks sharp.

Softer songs cut the album in half and are split down the middle in terms of effectiveness. The sparkling and jangly reflection on school shootings, “Prayers,” succeeds where the Disney ballad “Cold Song” doesn’t. A return to edgy alt-rock on “Leech” — complete with a Matt Skiba-esque guest spot from Architects’ Sam Carter — and “Better Demons” shine the spotlight on “California (The Way I Say I Love You),” making it glaringly obvious that the sunny song, though not bad, is out of place.

Still, it feels sincere as a love song for the kids of leading twins Joel and Benji Madden. Actually, the entire album feels sincere, even if some of the lyrics are a bit melodramatic. That’s always been the sweet spot for Good Charlotte, though. Even though they can’t say it’s by the kids and for the kids anymore, they’re evidently at their best when they put on masks and write for a younger demographic.

On Generation RX, Good Charlotte regain their connection with the Youth they claimed to be an Authority on by speaking to them, not at them. Funnily enough, focusing on darkness and dealing with it has provided them with a light to chase and pushed the gleam at the end of their tunnel farther into the distance. This band of brothers and their bros still have something crucial to offer.

Berliner Philharmoniker – Andris Nelsons conducts Mozart, Wagner and Shostakovich 2013 1080p WEB-DL AAC2.0 H.264-CHDWEB

$

In his essay “On the Overture”, Richard Wagner strongly advised his composer colleagues against “wandering off to the wearisome painting of minor plot details”. Ultimately the composer would no longer be able to “carry out his dramatic idea” if details of the action were already revealed in the prelude. Accordingly, in his Tannhäuser prelude, Wagner limited himself to a chorale-like trombone choir (Wartburg), shimmering chromaticism (Venusberg) and a tremendous final apotheosis to suggest the story’s key points, beginning with “the orchestra alone imitating the chanting Pilgrims”.

To complement Wagner’s spatialised musical scene, Andris Nelsons turns to a work that Mozart composed in 1779 in Salzburg, the Symphony in B flat major, K 319. Described by Ludwig Finscher as an “extraordinarily subtle chamber symphony”, it was originally in three movements, the minuet being added later for a performance in Vienna. It was published along with the Haffner Symphony in 1785 by the Viennese firm of Artaria, and their popularity with the public has endured to the present day.

To conclude the concert, Nelsons conducts Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony in which the composer, to quote Leopold Stokowski, proves himself to be “a master who was constantly growing in creative imagination and musical self-confidence”.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 01:14:14 minutes | 1,45 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © First Hand Records

This is the first release of at least three volumes of EMI early stereo recordings, in a joint venture with the Archive of Recorded Sound (ARS). EMI started to record in stereo in 1954 and all the recordings in this new series are from this historic period of recorded music. All the releases will appear for the first time in some form and feature many of the greatest classical artists of the time.

Included in this first issue is Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel, a recording which, for some reason, was never released on LP or any other format before this FHR release. This recording, with the LSO conducted by Norman Del Mar, is in fact, the earliest known surviving EMI stereo recording of a complete work.

Paul Tortelier’s was a star cellist for HMV and was the most charismatic of an exceptional generation of French cellists. Tortelier gives an athletic account of this ‘lost’ stereo recording of Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 and Menges supports him admirably. There is an extraordinary difference between the well-known mono recording, and this stereo version, where the soloist is much more sympathetically placed within the orchestral texture.
In the Brahms Violin Concerto, Hungarian Endre Wolf displays an effortless, fine style and lovely tone free of the wide ‘Hubay vibrato’ affected by many of his compatriots. Wolf’s playing here is a good example of the Hungarian Brahms tradition.

Hot-tipped trio Hieronymo have made it far recently, all the way from outer space. Expect to hear psychedelic rock that knows how to hold down a hypnotic groove, punctuated by haunting vocal harmonies, lush guitars and the odd synth. Now sure, there’s a humble head-wobble towards the 1970s – Thanks 1970s! Thanks Krautrock and Afrobeat!! But this thumping sound builds a bold new world of its own.

The Payne family moved to Gideon, Missouri, in 1944 and Jimmy enjoyed country music and singing in church. He had a gospel programme on the radio on Saturdays and was picking cotton during the week. In 1957, he moved to St. Louis to work as a professional country singer. He met Chuck Glaser while in the US Army and played guitar with the Glaser Brothers band. Chuck Glaser took over his management when he formed his band, the Payne Gang. He made several singles including ‘Ladder To The Sky’, ‘What Does It Take (To Keep A Woman Like You Satisfied)’ and ‘My Most Requested Song’. He first appeared on the Grand Ole Opry in 1966. He cut several singles including his own composition, ‘Woman, Woman’, which had national success in 1967 when it was recorded by Gary Puckett And The Union Gap. He continued to have only minor success as a solo artist – ‘L.A. Angels’, ‘Ramblin’ Man’ and ‘Turning My Love On’ – but he wrote Charley Pride’s US number 1 country single, ‘My Eyes Can Only See As Far As You’. He wrote the popular title track of his gospel album, Walk With Me The Rest Of The Way, with Jim Glaser. In 1986 he recorded a duet, ‘Ugly Women And Pick-Up Trucks’, with Tompall Glaser. Original recordings date 1968 year. Listen remastered version from high quality.

My goal on the latest Free Country recording is again to arrange country and Appalachian music for a jazz group in new and unusual ways. I’m conscious of both moving forward and staying true to the elemental soul of the songs, where old stories are told by modern, protean players. Or as a friend once put it, “Downtown meets the heartland.” Whether sung straight, or approached as improvisational vehicles, I find endless currency in this material.

An angel is defined as an attendant and benevolent spirit. Perhaps we musicians are entrusted to act as such. This is, of course, a serious task, and yet the beauty of these tunes is they encourage us not just to meditate and grieve but also to laugh and dance.

John Oates is one half of the best-selling duo of all time, Hall & Oates, as well as an accomplished solo artist. Singing from the time he could talk and playing the guitar since the age of five, John Oates was destined to be a musician. John Oates met Daryl Hall while attending Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. The two began collaborating and playing music together, marking the beginning of their historic partnership. Since their formation in the early 70s, Daryl Hall & John Oates have gone on to record 21 albums, which have sold over 80 million units, making them the most successful duo in rock history.

John’s most recent record album Arkansas was released in February 2018 on Thirty Tigers/PS Records. Originally inspired by the music and legacy of the legendary Mississippi John Hurt, the project expanded to encompass other artists and styles that represent the dawn of American popular music from the early 1920s and 30s. Assembling a band of all-star Nashville musicians, Oates shines a light on music from America’s past long before the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
