Witold Lutosławski’s few surviving apprentice works are suffused with the elegance of Ravel and the lush effusiveness of Szymanowski, and this is particularly true of the early Piano Sonata, heard here in Giorgio Koukl’s new and corrected edition based on the original manuscript. Further premières include the wistful A Kiss of Roxanne and the technically complex Invention. Including all of the folk-music tinted pedagogical miniatures, works for piano four hands and other occasional pieces, this is the most comprehensive edition of Lutosławski’s works for solo piano ever recorded.

2018 marks the 15th anniversary of Great Lake Swimmers. Over seven albums, multiple EPs, live broadcasts, and reissues, the Toronto-based project led by singer-songwriter Tony Dekker has established itself as a beloved indie folk act in their native Canada and beyond. The CBC has called them “a national treasure” while their music has taken them around the world, sharing a sound that is at once familiar and distinct, using the tools of folk music as the starting point to delve deeper.

It’s this contrast and evolution that brings them to their latest release, The Waves, The Wake – a metaphor for the future ahead, and the past trailing behind. Abandoning the acoustic guitar, this new collection of songs sees the group branching out to include new sounds such as harp, lute, pipe organ, woodwinds, congas and marimbas, alongside the more familiar flecks and chimes of the banjo, piano, and 12-string electric guitar. The stunning acoustics of the historic, 145 year old Bishop Cronyn Memorial Church in London, Ontario lend the atmospheric touch to the album, under the guidance of co-producer Chris Stringer (Union Sound). This record is about the songs, first and foremost, and was made with many of Toronto’s most talented players, including arrangements by Drew Jurecka and electric guitar appearances both atmospheric and spirited by Kevin Kane (Grapes Of Wrath). Long time collaborators Erik Arnesen (banjo, guitar), Bret Higgins (bass), and Josh Van Tassel (percussion) also contribute their considerable musicianship.

“The Talking Wind” opens the album solely with woodwinds and vocals, setting the tone with its scaled back, minimalist approach. Similarly sparse arrangements on “Falling Apart” pair a meditative, layered piano with an appearance by renowned harpist Mary Lattimore alongside Dekker’s haunting, plaintive vocals. Bridging the album to the group’s past work, the lonely jangle of “Alone But Not Alone” is a study in song-craft; “Side Effects” matches lyrical substance to musical motifs with its expressive vibraphone, tempo variations, and vocal effects.
But perhaps the album’s centerpiece is the entirely a cappella “Visions Of A Different World” with its ghostly,

onging vocals nakedly bearing its message.

During the Grateful Dead’s legendary 30-year run, the band often visited its northern neighbours in Portland, Seattle, and less-than-often Vancouver. Even so, official live recordings from those cities are something of a rarity. Pacific Northwest ’73-’74: Believe It If You Need It highlights some of the best performances from Grateful Dead’s time in the northwest. The concerts in the set include: P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). During the period when the shows were recorded, the Grateful Dead included: Jerry Garcia, Donna Jean Godchaux, Keith Godchaux, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. The recordings of the 1973 shows were made just a few months before the band released its sixth studio album, Wake of the Flood, which was its first without founding member Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, who died in March 1973, and the first on their new Grateful Dead Records label. The 1974 shows were recorded just a few weeks before the band released its seventh studio album, From The Mars Hotel. Each show was mastered in 24bit high-resolution audio from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

After the amazing masterpieces of Revolver and Sergeant Pepper’s, The Beatles dove back into the art of pure writing, bringing about a certain level of sobriety and leaving aside their recent psychadelic delusions, awesome as they were. Released in November 1968, this double White Album is a return to more refined pop and rock; the essence of their art. The title of the disc, The Beatles, does not manage to hide the growing dissension between the four musicians at the time, and their diverging personalities saw this album herald the beginning of the end for the Fab Four, and the budding of their future solo careers… Despite all of this, The Beatles managed to release a new and totally unique album here, which can be enjoyed step by step as a true emotional rollercoaster: The fantasy of Dear Prudence, the dark madness of Revolution 9, the legendary guitar solo in While My Guitar Gently Weeps, the labyrinth of Happiness Is A Warm Gun and Sexy Sadie, the emotion of Julia (which Lennon dedicated to his mother, who died when he was 17), the purity of Blackbird and the ultra-violent tsunami that is Helter Skelter… the White Album is a brilliant production, a new masterpiece from a group growing apart …

For its 50-year anniversary, this legendary double album makes a return in Deluxe Edition form, a well-deserved title. As well as the stereo remixed version by legendary producer George Martin’s son, the original mono version (praised by purists for this format) and the famous Esher Demos there are 27 demo tracks of some famous hits recorded in Harrison’s home and three studio-session CDs. It’s a marvellous collection (107 tracks in total!) which let’s us further explore this glorious piece of work that still fascinates us 50 years after its creation…  –  Marc Zisman

The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band’s extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we’ve paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows – P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

Sebastian Bohren plays concertos of Mendelssohn, Schubert, Respighi, and Hartmann Mendelssohn’s long-forgotten “little” violin concerto, presented in con- cert for the first time in 1952 by Yehudi Menuhin, was composed in 1822 – a year when the thirteen-year-old would write a total of twelve works. The young Mendelssohn is remarkable not only for his prodigious talent, but also for his extraordinary eagerness to learn. Eduard Devrient, the man of the theater who heard him play at his parents’ home, offers a vi- vid description of his humility: “We quickly noticed that the boy had very little personal vanity, and that his desire to learn, experience, try things out, and make progress for its own sake was most important to him by far.”

Two versions of the violin concerto, which followed each other in quick succession, have survived. Upon comparing them, we note the precision with which the teenager integrated new experiences into his composing. He makes small changes in the relationship between solo and orchestra and corrects many details in the violin part, notably enhancing the virtu- oso effect. Though no performance has been documented, the concerto was probably intended for the Sunday musical gatherings organized by Mendelssohn’s mother in their own house, where Felix had the privilege of testing out his first works in the hands of Berlin’s finest musicians. The lack of winds in the instrumentation, something already considered antiquated in the early 19th century, also suggests such a private setting.

Semyon Bychkov conducts the Czech Philharmonic in Tchaikovsky’s epic Manfred Symphony for Volume 2 of his Tchaikovsky Project.

Following 2016’s critically acclaimed Tchaikovsky Project Vol.1 (Pathétique and Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture), Volume 2 is released to coincide with the performance of Manfred Symphony at the BBC Proms on Thursday 31 August 2017.

The Tchaikovsky Project is a multi-year project shedding new light on the great master’s major orchestral works. Each recording benefits from extensive preparation time, the best possible recording conditions and Bychkov’s in-depth research on these works.

“I’ve loved Tchaikovsky’s music ever since I can remember. Like all first loves this one never died.” “This symphony is an opera without words, and one of Tchaikovsky’s greatest operas at that.” (Semyon Bychkov)

„The epic expansiveness of the Manfred Symphony suits Bychkov’s operatic tendencies perfectly. He clearly relishes the music’s moments of grandeur, over-the-top rhetoric and dramatic coups, and the Czech orchestra responds with playing of tremendous character” (Andrew Clements, The Guardian)

What a shame that Mozart’s other bassoon concertos (of which there supposedly were four others) vanished without a trace! Indeed they represent works of youth, albeit the youth of Mozart is equivalent to the maturity of many composers! Bassoonist Sergio Azzolini gives us his interpretation of this small masterpiece on an original bassoon built by Kaspar Tauber in 1790, an instrument on which all the difficulties imagined by Mozart take their full measure: not only did he require the lowest note, but also the highest accessible note, and added virtuosities, which probably stunned the bassoonist who played the score for the first time. The sound of this ancient and venerable instrument, finer and more “pinched” – and precise – than a German Fagott, closer to a French bassoon, creates a rather unusual listening and musical experience. Continuing the programme, the Bolzano String Academy decided to offer a very ample serenade by Michael Haydn, including a movement subtitled “Concertino per il fagotto”, while other movements put emphasis on the solo trumpet. It’s important to note that it is, for the most part, a formal reconstruction made by our musicians to offer a great serenade like it might have been played at the time: by inserting movements from various previous works. It’s with these types of works that we see how Mozart managed to draw from Haydn, the Great’s younger brother, much too discreet in view of his immense talent – a talent Mozart took advantage of, deliberately or not, in his own creations.

On her new album, Bach Inventions & Sinfonias, renowned pianist Simone Dinnerstein reconnects with the foundation of her musical career and what she’s best known for a solo album of J.S. Bach’s keyboard works. The recording was made at the Academy of Arts and Letters in New York by Grammy-winning producer Adam Abeshouse. The Inventions and Sinfonias, commonly known as the 3-part inventions, were originally written in 1723 as a musical guide for keyboard players and remain a core part of the piano repertoire for students, amateurs, and professional musicians alike. Bach Inventions & Sinfonias features beautiful, well-known music by one of the most popular composers of all time, performed by the premiere Bach pianist of our time.

Bach’s Inventions and Sinfonias (commonly known as the 3-part Inventions) are the foundation of keyboard students’ study. Likewise most musicologists will study part of the Inventions at some stage of their theoretical education. Simone is keen to reach young students, their parents and musicologists, in addition to her usual fan base and plans a series of short videos on a selection of the inventions to connect with this audience.

Simone Dinnerstein says: “The first keyboard pieces of Bach that I remember hearing were his Inventions, when I was nine years old. The music seemed impossibly expressive and virtuosic at the time, and wholly beyond my abilities. Here were two continuous and independent voices, neither of which was subservient to the other. Until then I had thought of music as melody and accompaniment. An instrumental training is as much a training in how to listen as in how to play. In the text that accompanies the Inventions, Bach calls them ‘an honest guide.’ His Inventions and Sinfonias are marvels in demonstrating just how potent counterpoint is as an aid to expression, and how powerful a cantabile voice can be when surrounded by contradiction and elaboration. These small masterpieces have snippets of dances in them, laments and celebrations, simplicity and complexity.”

‘An utterly distinctive voice in the forest of Bach interpretation’ (New York Times)

“this is a romantic approach, with a limpid, legato touch in many of the Inventions. There is a dynamic rise and fall which emphasises the shape of phrases, and there is a vocal clarity to the contrapuntal strands which keeps us soundly on message for the most part…In the end, most of these performances are very good indeed on their own, but only your individual taste will dictate if you respond to Dinnerstein’s approach.” (MusicWeb International)

The conductor Roger Norrington remains the bad boy of historically informed performance, which is noteworthy for a man 81 years old when this box set was released in 2015. With this set of Haydn’s so-called Paris Symphonies, composed in 1785 and 1786 and first conducted by the sensation of black Paris, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Norrington lives up to his reputation with unorthodox readings that are either brilliant or perverse, depending largely on your own individual reaction. A balanced account might point to several factors. Most prominent is an idiosyncratic approach to tempo, particularly in the slow movements. Before you shell out the price of this three-CD set, try to sample the “Allegretto” movement of the Symphony No. 85 (CD one, track six) to see what you’re getting into: Norrington and the admittedly brilliantly compliant strings of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra blaze through it in a mere four minutes and 51 seconds, including all repeats. Several (although curiously not all) of the other slow movements and slow introductions are comparable. Norrington perhaps puts too much stock in Haydn’s tempo markings, which in an era before the standardization of the metronome were notoriously subjective and variable. The flat, vibratoless strings that are Norrington’s trademark are here throughout, creating a standard sheen into which Norrington injects crescendos that are nowhere to be seen in Haydn’s scores. It’s tempting to conclude that those scores serve merely as a starting point for further creative work in Norrington’s hands, but in other respects the performances do catch lots of detail that others miss. The wind instruments are deployed to the rear of the divided strings, and their parts emerge nicely in a kind of sinfonia concertante-like texture, especially the oboe in several places. Norrington’s control over his orchestra is unquestionable, and his concept is both original and executed in a thoroughgoing way. It’s just a question of whether you accept it.

“So Good” is the second studio album by Swedish singer and songwriter Zara Larsson, and her first released internationally. The release of the album was delayed for unknown reasons other than her claim that changes were made to many of the songs. On Metacritic, the album received a score of 76 out of 100 based on four reviews, indicating “generally favorable” reception.

Living up to its title, So Good – the sophomore set from Swedish singer Zara Larsson – arrived after a two-year promotional rollout that followed the release of her debut, 2014’s 1. Her slow climb toward the upper pop strata occupied by Rihanna, Sia, and Tove Lo – the artists whose vocals Larsson most closely echoes – began in 2015 with the quadruple-platinum number one single “Lush Life,” an effective dose of tropical pop that rides the surf with a playful whistle and undeniable bounce. Quickly following with the skittering staccato of MNEK duet “Never Forget You,” Larsson scored another hit. Two subsequent album highlights – the bass-blasted “Ain’t My Fault” and “I Would Like” – provided additional examples of her strong voice and confident attitude. By the time fifth single – the Ty Dolla $ign-featuring, Charlie Puth-penned title track – arrived in 2017, a third of So Good had been unveiled. Despite the significant time gap, So Good remains a tight vision full of romantic drama, youthful abandon, and a strong sense of female empowerment. “TG4M” (“too good for me”) basks in the sun with a piña colada in hand, part of a Girl’s Only weekend with Daya and Hailee Steinfeld, while the WizKid-featuring, Stargate-produced “Sundown” invites Sia to the moonlight island party. When the party ends, the uplifting “What They Say” provides a comforting shoulder to lean on. Amongst the feel-good party jams, heartfelt surprises provide more emotional sustenance. “Make That Money Girl” is a slow-builder that turns the bad gal toughness of Rihanna into a girl power anthem with a message that demands self-reliance and vision, going so far as reminding listeners that “you can be the next female president.” When Larsson delves even deeper, the results are refreshing. Album closer “I Can’t Fall in Love Without You” is a beautiful sendoff. Set to Jesper Nordenström’s piano accompaniment, the track is a sweeping and heartfelt expression, the most vulnerable and pure on So Good. Fun and engaging, Larsson made one of the better pop albums of 2017. Like contemporaries Daya, Steinfeld, Bebe Rexha, and Dua Lipa, Larsson delivers polished R&B-influenced pop gems that shine bright like diamonds while maintaining a too-cool-for-school factor that helps to distinguish her from the bubblegum.

Opeth have announced the upcoming release of a new live album and concert video titled Garden of the Titans: Live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, which arrives on November 2nd. The audio and visuals were captured at the legendary Colorado venue on May 17, 2017, as the band was touring the U.S. in support of their most recent album, Sorceress.

The filming of the Swedish progressive death metal band was overseen by The Deka Brothers, the French directors who have made videos for Gojira and Carpenter Brut. And the audio for the show was mixed by David Castillo, a studio vet who helped engineer Opeth’s 2008 album, Watershed.

This new release will hopefully tide Opeth fans over while they wait for a new studio disc from the group. According to an interview that guitarist and vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt gave to eonmusic last year, the band hopes to have the new album out by mid-to-late 2019.

Joel Lyssarides is a multi-awarded Swedish jazz-musician. Starting to take piano lessons at the age of 4, Joel claims that one of his early inspirations to jazz was from hearing Charlie Parkers “Blue Bird.” Only 25 years old, Joel already has a 10 year career behind him, and has toured and collaborated with artists such as Anne Sofie Von Otter, Dirty Loops, Benny Andersson, Nils Landgren and Silvana Imam. Over the years Joel has received a number of prominent awards. At the age of 21 he won the Jan Wallander award, which gave him a Steinway grand piano and access to a studio in central Stockholm. Joel has also been awarded by the Swedish Association of composers as well as been nominated for “Newcomer of the year” by the Swedish radio. In November of 2017 Joel recorded his debut album with fellow musicians Niklas Fernqvist on Upright bass and Rasmus Svensson Blixt on drums. The music is inspired by flamenco and americana but also reflects Joel’s interest in romantic classical music, mainly drawing inspiration from the Russian composer Scriabin and the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla. The album presents an intense and challenging music for the classic pianotrio-format.

Los Angeles’ Joey Dosik is thrilled to announce his debut album, Inside Voice. “Inside Voice” builds gradually into 1970s-style soul, as Dosik’s remarkable vocal range hovers over a sparse arrangement. It’s quiet but – in keeping with the song’s concept, which Dosik describes as “deep, sexual, but also kind of silly”- it’s also a thrilling, intimate moment. Dosik honed his craft as part of a burgeoning Los Angeles scene that reinvents classic popular music to thrive in the present tense. With Inside Voice, which features a number of Dosik’s closest collaborators – including Moses Sumney, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Mocky, Coco O, Theo Katzman, and others – Dosik delivers a level of depth rarely achieved in a debut, and the result is an instant classic by any standard. It’s brimming with emotions that linger and hum. It’s catchy as hell and can haunt you for days. You can take a casual listen or spend hours on repeat. Either way, Inside Voice will get you, because Joey Dosik writes human music for human beings. And boy does he write the hell out of it. Throughout, Dosik does a remarkable job of honoring and evolving classic sounds, letting his uncanny gift for songwriting guide the way. Inside Voice follows Dosik’s acclaimed debut EP, Game Winner, re-released by Secretly Canadian earlier this year.

It’s hard to believe that the youth on the sleeve of Inside Voice is a kind of reincarnation of Marvin Gaye! It’s impossible not to think of the writer of What’s Going On when you hear Joey Dosik’s voice. All the soul music of a Sixties-Seventies golden age seems to be distilled in the passion of this Californian, who packs a fine, slightly gospel, rendition of Bill Withers’s Stories into his first album. This is a record of the old school, which has enjoyed a refined production job. Dosik’s music is sophisticated, profound, sexy, intimate and pure. His piano parts, often very sparse, are the perfect counterpoint to his angelic voice. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, an accomplice of Flying Lotus, has arranged all the strings, and Moses Sumney has taken charge of all the beautiful choirs. A big fan of Carole King, Joey Dosik also proves that he can serve up moving lyrics, as on the poignant Grandma Song. The class of thisInside Voice is such that no-one can quibble with this artist’s retro, or even old-fashioned, choices. At 32 years of age, Dosik is looking for the timeless, the eternal and a certain kind of perfection.  – Marc Zisman

“Yet another a record of baroque violin works played by baroque instrumentalists on period baroque instruments”, you might well say upon reading the track list of this release by (baroque…) violinist Jonas Zschenderlein, accompanied by harpsichord player Alexander von Heißen. In fact, it’s anything but! The idea of this album is to record the instruments in a completely modern way, with microphones placed up close, and a post-production operation (mixing, balancing tracks between microphones, equalisation or distortion of the original sound, artificial reverberation, etc.) of the sort normally found on rock albums. The result is a sound which is bound to startle a listener who is used to their Bach Sonata BWV 1019 being played a certain way, according to the canonical method imposed by post-romantic violinists in recent decades, or by “pure” baroque artists. But that’s the whole point. Corelli himself gets the same treatment and his reasonably famous Sonata Op. 5 No. 5 becomes pretty much unrecognisable. On the other hand, lesser-known works by Montanari and Westhoff, thanks to the treatment they get here, could well become standards…

At 38 years old, Josh Smith is already a long time veteran of the Music/Blues scene. His new album “Burn To Grow” is his tenth studio release. His first album was released as a 14 year old kid back in South Florida almost 25 years ago. After pursuing blues full-time from age 13-22 and touring the US to support his efforts, Josh moved to Los Angeles in 2002. There he made a name for himself as a session guitarist, sideman and producer. At the same time he continued to release self produced albums showing the growth and wealth of new influences he was acquiring from his work. This has culminated with the new album “Burn To Grow.” When you see a Josh Smith live show you are seeing someone who wears his influences on his sleeves and truly tries to be open to all styles of music all the while staying firmly rooted in the Blues. This album is a representation of that approach. It features sometimes very sophisticated arrangement and production. It has complex harmony and interesting melodic ideas in the writing. At the same time the performances are completely improvised and live just as they would be at a live blues gig. All the guitar solos are live and improvised with the rhythm section. The musicians who play on the record were chosen specifically for the individual pushes they would bring to the respective songs they are on. This all adds up to an album that is the closest yet to what you get when you come to a Josh Smith gig. A little soul, some jazz, some R&B, some rock and roll and a whole lot of the blues!!!!

This set of George Enescu’s solo piano music traces a fascinating musical arc from his precocious years in Vienna and Paris, where he absorbed Brahmsian and French late-Romantic influences, notably in the Impromptus, to the brilliantly mercurial Piano Sonata No. 3. Whether in the Pièces impromptues, eloquent character pieces, or in the oceanic Piano Sonata No. 1, Enescu remains, in Pablo Casals’ words, ‘the greatest musical phenomenon since Mozart’, his unique musical language embracing Bach as well as the abiding vitality, and melancholy, of his native Romanian folk music.

Jowee Omicil is a jazz artist unlike any you’ve heard before. He brings a novel and distinctly Afro-Haitian perspective to his music. Omicil’s melodic storytelling blends flavors from his Creole roots with gospel, soul, hip-hop and folk, not to mention nods to the masters – from Charlie Parker to Ornette Coleman. Love Matters is a musical antidote to our quest for spirituality. It is carried by a cosmopolitan sense of groove and injected with hints of voodoo blues and funk trance.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 01:17:28 minutes | 1,18 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Warner Classics

Recorded live at London’s celebrated Wigmore Hall, this captivating recital by Joyce DiDonato and the Brentano Quartet was conceived around Jake Heggie’s song cycle Camille Claudel: Into the Fire, a work written for DiDonato – she describes it as “one of most moving projects I’ve ever been part of”.

Songs by Debussy and Strauss and a quartet movement by Guillaume Lekeu complete the programme, which prompted the Financial Times to write that “the beauty and range” of DiDonato’s singing “are surely now at their impressive peak.”
