Following his award-winning survey of Ravel’s complete solo piano works, Bertrand Chamayou takes on some of the most brilliant yet fiendishly virtuosic music in the French Romantic repertoire on his new Saint-Saëns album, drawing together the two most famous of the composer-pianist’s five piano concertos – the epic No.2 and the irresistibly exotic No.5 ‘The Egyptian’ – alongside a bouquet of lesser-known solo pieces and études that will delight pianophiles. These include the effervescent yet notoriously difficult Étude en forme de Valse with its breathtaking bravura finale, and the entrancing Les Cloches de Las Palmas inspired by the bells Saint-Saëns heard ringing out in the Canary Islands. ‘I’m always charmed by Saint-Saëns,’ says Chamayou. ‘There’s an attraction to the exotic, the bizarre, sensual fantasy, that’s very curious for a composer that we think of as so academic. And there’s a real sense of voyage in the music of Saint-Saëns that I find fascinating.’ He is joined by the Orchestre National de France and its formidable conductor Emmanuel Krivine for an album that promises fireworks, champagne and just a few puffs of opium.

For ten years, Sophie Hunger has been making enchanting folk music. A woman with hybrid tastes, the Swiss musician sometimes even steps out into jazz, when she isn’t touring pop or rock. Today, her curiosity is taking her even further afield, with this album, written in Berlin and full of electro sounds. Molecules is a pleasing work that opens strongly with a politically-conscious track: She Makes The President. Given that she wrote the soundtrack to My Life as a Zucchini, this number sounds like it comes straight from an American blockbuster. And with good reason! Written before the election of Donald Trump, Sophie Hunger is imagining the victory of a badass woman in the Presidential race. A prog beat, a minimalist, catchy chorus, and subsequent political developments give the album greater weight. Then the film plunges ahead, each scene more surprising than the last. A double agent on acoustic guitar (Silver Lane), a chase scene with phantom beats (Tricks), African rhythms (I Open A Bar) and a romantic Franglais finale (Coucou). Sophie Hunger’s music makes for living tableaux that swarm with details. This is a record halfway between work of art and scientific experiment. – Clara Bismuth

The New York Times has described the French ensemble as “a string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band” and its recordings of Haydn, Bartók, Brahms and Schubert have been praised all over the world. Portal and the Ébène first played together in Paris in 2013, where Piazzolla’s compositions were also on the programme, prompting Le Monde to speak of “a significant lesson, a superb encounter, a real conversation.”

Eternal Stories might just turn out to be one of the best albums that Portal has ever recorded. He could well have been thinking of his beloved Charlie Parker, who in 1949 realised his dream of making a recording with a string section. Eternal Stories is not some kind of attempt at a remake, but comprises completely new pieces and two new arrangements of classic Portal numbers, a late work by Piazzolla and astonishing contributions from members of Quatuor Ébène itself.

Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante for cello and orchestra in E minor, Op. 125, makes the listener aware of the level of external and internal conflict under which the composer was laboring at the time of its composition in 1952, close to the end of his life. Prokofiev had suffered under the censure of the Soviet regime in the last decades of his life and worked hard to maintain his artistic integrity while avoiding offending the delicate aesthetic sensibilities of the authorities. The Sinfonia Concertante, his last major work, suffers for being a balancing act that didn’t allow the composer to give expression to the full level of inventiveness that’s held in check by his tenuous political situation. It remains an attractive work, full of the energy and idiosyncrasies that make Prokofiev Prokofiev. Mstislav Rostropovich, at whose urging the composer wrote the piece, a radical re-working of an earlier concerto, gives a vibrant and authoritative performance, making its outrageously virtuosic demands sound effortless. The cello concerto by Nikolay Myaskovsky is a far less conflicted work, more song-like and conventional than the Prokofiev, and while it may lack the originality and spark for it to become a repertoire standard, its gentle lyricism makes it an appealing work. The album closes with Rostropovich playing Rachmaninov’s Vocalise with all the passion and restraint that a truly memorable performance of it requires. The sound of the Prokofiev is clear and full, but there is enough background noise in the Myaskovsky to be distracting. – Review by Stephen Eddins

In March 2017, Warner Classics marks the 10th anniversary of Mstislav Rostropovich’s death and 90 years since his birth with the deluxe collectors’ box set Cellist of the Century, comprising of selected remastered recordings.

The label was given unprecedented access to Rostropovich’s personal archive and worked closely with his daughters Elena and Olga. The range and variety of music in the box set is nothing short of extraordinary, embracing works by more than 60 composers, from iconic recordings to rarities. A number of the live performances originate from Russian tapes saved from destruction by resourceful Soviet archivists when Rostropovich was exiled from the USSR (1974-1990), and which came back to light in the late 1990s. Another highlight is the complete Bach Cello Suites, presented here in both audio and video versions. The collection also features an exclusive audio interview of Rostropovich recorded by personality Jon Tolansky.

Although Rostropovich died 10 years ago, on 27 April 2007, he remains a powerful presence on the world’s cultural scene through his legacy as the greatest cellist of his time, as a brave advocate of human rights, and as a man of proverbial generosity and charisma.

Special care has been taken to ensure the highest quality of sound reproduction. Wherever possible, the engineers of Art et Son studios have refined the sound, always with scrupulous respect to the original sources. The analogue recordings originating from EMI and Erato (CD1-15) have been remastered in 96 kHz from the original tapes. These are, therefore, the first recordings where the presence and definition of sound are heard in such detail.

Chamber music by Russian composer Galina Ustvolskaya is featured on the second ECM disc by Patricia Kopatchinskaja, recently described by Strings magazine as “the most exciting violinist in the world” and winner of the 2014 Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist of the Year Award.

The unique expressiveness of the work of Galina Ustvolskaya (1919-2006) speaks to the listener with directness and nuanced layers of sound, the powerful, rhythmic stringency of the music testifying to the relentlessness of her vision. Fiercely independent, Ustvolskaya maintained that her music sounded like the work of no other composer, living or dead, and put herself outside all stylistic “schools”. Her work, said Viktor Suslin, has the “narrowness of a laser beam capable of piercing metal”. Its sense of concentration is sometimes ferocious. Entering this sound-world calls for a special kind of commitment and intensity.

Kopatchinskaja and Markus Hinterhäuser play the Sonata (1952) and the Duet (1964) for violin and piano, and together with Reto Bieri, the Trio (1949) for clarinet, violin and piano, all recorded in the acoustically superb studio in Lugano which has become one of ECM’s primary locations.

The Goo Goo Dolls have announced a new live album, titled “The Audience is This Way,” released July 21, featuring 10 previously unreleased live versions of tracks from the band’s rich catalog, mid-90s until the current studio album “Boxes” (2016). The recordings are from the band’s recent tours and were recorded by John Schimke and produced and mixed by John Rzeznik, Chris Szczech and Brad Fernquist. “The Audience is This Way” first appears as a limited edition of 3,000 copies of black vinyl at independent record shops for the Record Store Day Crawl Los Angeles. From the 24th of August the live album will also be available as download and stream everywhere.

In hindsight, Bob Dylan‘s recordings in the 1980s deserve their bad rep less for the songs – which can be tremendously potent – than for the bland production and often half-baked performances. This revisionist tribute drives that notion home. Two standouts come from 1983’s Infidels: Built to Spill turn the smooth reggae rock of “Jokerman” into a prickly, guitar-centric anthem of flailing faith, and Craig Finn makes the cosmic barroom come-on of “Sweetheart Like You” seem both sleazier and more sincere than Dylan’s. Comedian-singer Reggie Watts dubs out “Brownsville Girl”; Glen Hansard desanctifies “Pressing On.” Sometimes you’ll miss Dylan’s bray. But as author Jonathan Lethem suggests in his spot-on liner notes, maybe this set will spur Dylan to reimagine some of these songs himself.

Paul McCartney and his music need no introduction. Together with three of his friends, he changed the cultural landscape forever.

And Paul’s accomplishments since then as a member of Wings and a solo artist make for a staggering body of work that stands proudly alongside those eight sensational years with The Beatles. Pure McCartney, a new compilation of his solo, Wings and Fireman work, celebrates that fact, showcasing 67 highlights from one of the most-revered catalogues in music – spanning from 1970 debut solo album all the way through 2012’s “My Valentine“, 2014’s “Hope For The Future” and 2015’s “Say Say Say remix”.

“Me and my team came up with the idea of putting together a collection of my recordings with nothing else in mind other than having something fun to listen to,” Paul says of this project.  “Maybe it’s to be enjoyed on a long car journey or an evening at home or at a party with friends? So we got our heads together and came up with these diverse playlists from various periods of my long and winding career.”

Touted as a personally curated compilation by Paul McCartney, Pure McCartney is the first McCartney compilation since 2001’s Wingspan: Hits and History. A full 15 years separated this and Wingspan, longer than the span between that double-disc set and 1987’s All the Best, but the 2001 set also stopped cold in 1984, leaving over 30 years of solo McCartney recordings uncompiled on hits collections. In both its standard two-CD and deluxe four-disc incarnations, Pure McCartney attempts to rectify this, going so far as to include “Hope for the Future,” his song for the 2014 video game Destiny. A fair chunk of the compilation rests upon songs heard on Wings Greatest, All the Best, and Wingspan – “Jet,” “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey,” “Another Day,” “Mull of Kintyre,” “Let Em In,” “Band on the Run,” “No More Lonely Nights,” “Live and Let Die,” “Say Say Say,” “Listen to What the Man Said,” and “Silly Love Songs” are all de rigueur – so the interesting things lie in the margins, or in the music made since 1984. The standard edition contains three selections from Flaming Pie – the 1997 album that kicked off a latter-day streak of excellent records from McCartney – and a couple of cuts from both Chaos & Creation in the Backyard and Memory Almost Full, but it bypasses Flowers in the Dirt entirely. Flowers is also entirely absent on the deluxe edition, which nevertheless offers plenty of room for digressions – here, the new wave future shock of “Temporary Secretary,” the rockers “Junior’s Farm,” the hippie come-on “Big Barn Bed” and “Hi Hi Hi,” and the frivolous synth pop of Press can all be heard – so it paints a much richer portrait of McCartney’s solo work, but even then it feels slightly incomplete. Hits are missing, including the brassy Brit-pop of “Take It Away,” “My Brave Face,” and the seasonal “Wonderful Christmastime,” as are electronic risks like “Check My Machine,” but their absence only underscores one fact: McCartney made more great music than what can fit on even a four-disc box. Pure McCartney gets closer to capturing the full range of his career than any of his previous compilations, but it’s still only an introduction to one of the richest bodies of work in pop music.

No language has the words to describe the essence of Schubert’s deepest musical outpourings. Probably the greatest tribute is paid to music of this quality not by talking about it, but by listening to it. Listening, not once, but many times; not with half an ear, but not too analytically either: listening in astonishment and with an open mind. Even so, a bit of commentary can sometimes be helpful, if only to place a work in its context. The environment, in the form of time and space, is always the breeding ground for every work of art. If we say “a tree is known by its fruit”, it is interesting to take a closer look at the tree.

What tree produced a fruit like Schubert?

In the early nineteenth century, when Schubert was growing up and living in Vienna, the personal emotions of a poet (or composer, writer, painter) were of growing importance. At the same time as it was moving towards individual expression, art was still clearly leaning on its strong ‘classical’ foundations, the achievements of the late eighteenth century — but the borders had been shifted, towards monumental stature and towards small-scale intimacy (compare Beethoven’s development of the symphony and the string quartet to the many jewels of art songs written by his contemporaries, with Schubert leading the way). In short, from the waves of this renewal arose what we now know as romantic art, with its diverse range of emotions, now intensified, now held back…

It was only when he reached Naples in April 1831 — after almost a year of his journey — that Italy began to seep its way into Mendelssohn’s music. Naples also called a halt to the pleasures of travelling. The weather was dreadful, with continual rain, so it was better to remain indoors. Mendelssohn used his ‘free time’ for a new symphony in the vibrant key of A major, the Italian. It seems to have fl owed from his pen with consummate ease, although he was only to complete the work some two years later, in Berlin, when his journey to Paestum on the Gulf of Salerno was far in his past.

The Italian is a real party piece. This was certainly the view following the work’s premiere in London on 13 May 1833, given by the Philharmonic Society. (Mendelssohn was highly acclaimed in London, where he had been commissioned to produce a new symphony). This makes it all the more remarkable that Mendelssohn himself described this masterpiece as having been ‘one of the most bitter moments of my entire career’, fretting, for years to come, about whether he ought to rewrite the second, third and fourth movements.

The opening Allegro vivace abounds with Mediterranean exuberance. The slow movement probably depicts a religious procession, witnessed by the composer in Naples. The third movement — Con moto moderato — seems to have little in the way of Italian infl uence. Rather one might imagine oneself in the shade of Germanic limes, beech and pine trees, Biedermeier-style. But the fi nale is drawn directly from Italian folk life: an irresistible, whirling dance to the rhythmic beat of the saltarello.

The Serenade in B flat major K. 361/370a by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the so-called Gran Partita (this appellation is not the composer’s), is inarguably one of the greatest works in the wind instrument repertoire. It adheres to the Viennese tradition of Harmoniemusik-music for wind ensembles intended to add lustre to aristocratic events and banquets-yet transcends the genre by its instrumentation (two basset-horns, two horns and a double bass were added to the traditional octet), its monumental proportions (seven movements) and the richness of its musical inventiveness.

Hunter, the third long player from from the BRIT award and double Mercury Music Prize-nominated Anna Calvi, will be released on 31st August 2018 via Domino. Produced by Nick Launay (Nick Cave, Grinderman) at Konk Studios in London with some further production in LA, the album was recorded with Anna’s band – Mally Harpaz on various instruments and Alex Thomas on drums – with the addition of Adrian Utley from Portishead on keys and Martyn Casey from The Bad Seeds on bass. It has a new rawness, a primal energy into which Calvi pushes the limits of her guitar and voice beyond anything she’s recorded before. Hunter is the embodiment of the feeling of truly letting go. For the songwriter and virtuosic guitarist, it was a catharsis, an opportunity to be more truthful than ever. The first new music since 2014’s collaborative release with David Byrne, Strange Weather EP, her self-titled debut album and the 2013 follow-up One Breath, Hunter is a visceral album exploring sexuality and breaking the laws of gender conformity. A queer and a feminist record, it is galvanising in its hunt for freedom. It was important to Calvi that it was as vulnerable as it is strong; as beautiful as it is harsh; as much about the hunted as it is about the hunter. But she’s careful not to characterise any of these traits as “masculine” or “feminine” – the whole point is that one person, of any gender, can be both. The power is in the contrast itself; in the way she oscillates between extremes, sounding freer than ever before. She wanted to express herself while being “free from the story that either gender is given, free from worrying how people would judge me on what I want to do with my body and myself. For me, that’s quite a utopian vision.”

Thomas Dausgaard, the enormously talented conductor, continues here with his quest for recording the mainstream symphonic repertoire with an orchestra, smaller than the usual today. His journey has become a considerable success. What one possibly misses in string sound “thickness” is more than well compensated for by the added transparency, and the almost chamber-music-type listening by the orchestral members. As a matter of fact, Dausgaard’s and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra’s togetherness, ensemble playing is totally amazing and gives this listener a completely different view of these Brahmsian masterpieces. Add Anna Larsson – Abbado’s favourite alto – Johan Reuter, and the Swedish Radio Choir, and what you get is a very, very strong team indeed. Renowned for his creativity and innovation in programming, the excitement of his live performances and an extensive catalogue of critically-acclaimed recordings, Thomas Dausgaard has been the chief conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra since 1997, and in 2016 took up the same position with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He is also set to become the music director of the Seattle Symphony in 2019.

In recent years, Annelie lended her vocal talents, instrumental proficiency and musical versatility to other artists. On her debut album After Midnight, she deliberately explores and gravitates within the limitations of a single instrument. The album originated in some measure from half-finished songs and loose fragments of melodies. These impressions, however, continued to resonate with Annelie over a longer period and eventually forged into beautiful abstraction. ‘At Night’, the record’s opening cut, lasts nine minutes and thirteen seconds; yet the sense of time immediately disappears once you get acquainted with the music’s deft, spiraling progressions.

After winning the 2015 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition then performing at the Montreal International Jazz Festival the following year, 25-year-old singer and songwriter Arianna Neikrug makes her grander introduction to the music world with the August 24, 2018 release of Changes on Concord Jazz.

Produced by the Grammy-winning pianist and arranger Laurence Hobgood, Changes displays Neikrug’s gift for interpreting tunes from the Great American Songbook and more recent pop and R&B classics from the ’70s. The disc also contains two originals that reveal some of Neikrug’s journey from her hometown of Los Angeles to New York City, where she argues she truly belongs. Blending the right amount of reverence for the jazz tradition with a knowing glance to modern pop and R&B classics, sprinkled with two inviting originals, Changes will delight both jazz purists and novices without making any unwise artistic compromises as she superbly negotiates the glories of jazz’s past with a wide-eyed optimism that betrays her tender age. “When you’re recording your debut album, fresh out of college, you’re not exactly sure how you want to present yourself,” Neikrug explains. “It was easier figuring that out by discovering who I didn’t want to be. I’m just trying to take the jazz tradition and move it in my direction.”

Little is known about Peeter Cornet’s biography. Only a few dates are available : he was probably born around 1575, was the organist in the musical chapel of Archdukes Albert and Isabelle at the Spanish court of Brussels, married Maria Cuypers in 1611 at Notre-Dame de la Chapelle in Brussels and was buried in Notre-Dame au Sablon in 1633. His compositions are of great quality, both contrapuntally and melodically. They give a glimpse into a rich personality and show great creativity. Flexibility and fluidity are fundamental components of the composer’s musical discourse, whose quality is comparable to that of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Francisco Correa de Arauxo, Girolamo Frescobaldi and all the other organists who make the splendour of the early seventeenth century organ repertoire.”
