Bruckner – Symphony no. 3 Anton Bruckner meticulously noted it in his calendar: autumn 1872, first rejection of the performance of the Third Symphony in Vienna; autumn 1875, second rejection; September 27, 1877, third rejection. Thanks to the efforts of his good friend Johann (von Ritter) Herbeck (who had conducted the premiere of Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony), Vienna’s Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde decided to programme the work on December 16, 1877, the second concert in the Gesellschaft series. Herbeck was to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic for the occasion in the “Golden Hall” of Vienna’s Musikverein. On October 28, however, Herbeck unexpectedly died, putting the premiere in doubt. That same evening, Bruckner sought the support of the influential Reichstag delegate and later Bruckner biographer August Gllerich, a close friend of Nikolaus Dumba, the Gesellschaft’s president. His efforts paid off, and the performance of the Third Symphony was saved. Alas, no conductor could be found who wanted to perform the work, so Bruckner, who was not used to leading an orchestra, took on the — to his mind, thankless — task. The results were predictable. Already in the rehearsals, things started going wrong. The orchestra’s musicians showed scant respect for the poor composer. They sabotaged the proceedings by intentionally playing out of tune and weaving odd notes and ornaments into the music. They stubbornly refused to repeat certain phrases and repeatedly laughed at Bruckner to his face. The great composer was the helpless conductor who baptized one of the most impressive compositions in music history in an exceedingly unpleasant atmosphere created largely by notorious troublemakers. Aside from the unfortunate rehearsals, other aspects of the concert were unfavourable for Bruckner: before the intermission, Joseph Hellmesberger conducted a programme that, to put it mildly, was excessively long: Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and the Violin Concerto in D minor by Louis Spohr followed multiple arias from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Peter von Winter’s Das unterbrochene Opernfest (already largely forgotten). Were that not enough, there was Beethoven’s Meeresstille und glu?ckliche Fahrt before Bruckner could present the Third Symphony.

In the early days of the symphonies history, there was nothing like the meticulousness of our approach to Bruckner’s work. On February 26, 1899, Gustav Mahler gave in Vienna the first performance of the Sixth, in his own version, in which he substantially reworked both the instrumentation and notes and showed no aversion to sweeping cuts. The first printed score of Bruckner’s Sixth appeared in the summer of 1899, however it deviated greatly from the original work. Largely responsible for this was Josef Schalk (1857-1900), a highly respected conductor in Vienna and an early Bruckner admirer (Bruckner often referred to him as “Herr Generalissimus”). Did Bruckner ever hear his “keckste” composition performed? That cannot be answered with any certainty.
We know that during a concert in Vienna on February 11, 1883, the Vienna Philharmonic performed only the Adagio and Scherzo, conducted by Wilhelm Jahn, but the composer possibly heard the complete symphony during the rehearsals — or perhaps in or around October 1882 during the orchestra’s

An album with the title Schlager and a cover which shows a tattoo on the lower lip from VANESSA MAI. Word and picture document from the first sight symbolically the border way of the artist who has defended herself since her career start as a solo singer to be put in a musical drawer and with it putatively only one confine creative space to have at disposal. This is no refusal to the genre which is 26-year-old anyway since her childhood quite near, it is rather a deliberate opening to the musical symbiosis. Differently, nowhere says VANESSA MAI, there are in the heads so deep ditches between the music directions, how in Germany.

It was love at first listen when we first discovered sister duo VanJess. With songs like “Touch The Floor,” “Addicted,” “Through Enough” and “Easy,” it’s easy to see why we’re all in for their eclectic, seductive sound. However, with all the stellar singles, it was beginning to seem like the ladies might just be teasing us without any plans on delivering a full-length effort. We were thankfully sorely mistaken. The sisters recently announced that their debut album, Silk Canvas, will arrive this month. But that wasn’t all. They were also kind enough to reveal the project’s tracklist. While we already knew the ladies would be bringing the heat with the likes of guest stars like Masego (“Touch The Floor), GoldLink (“Through Enough”), Leikeli47 and Berhana (“Easy”) in tow, what we didn’t know was that they were also riding in style when it comes to producers as well. The 15 track set boast production from hitmakers like IAMNOBODI, Kaytranada, Louie Lastic and a few more heavy hitters. In addition, suggestive song titles like “Control Me,” “My Love,” “Cool Off The Rain” and others have us thinking we’re going to continue to get the sensuality-meets-dance floor vibe they’ve been giving us with their previous singles. In announcing the album, they also shared a brief Instagram teaser of the video for “Control Me” featuring dancer Nicholas “Slick” Stewart (who happens to appear on the cover of The Carter’s Everything Is Love). It looks like everything is falling in order for VanJess. Check out the teaser and Silk Canvas’ tracklist below. Look for the album to arrive in stores and on streaming services on July 20th.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 42:18 minutes | 505 MB | Genre: Rock

WITH A LINE-UP featuring ex-HIM drummer Gas Lipstick, In Flames/Engel guitarist Niclas Engelin and vocalist Apollo Papathanasio (Firewind/Spiritual Beggars), We Sell The Dead arrive with reputations to uphold and expectations to meet. Unlike the vast majority of projects like this, wherein several celebrated veterans join forces to varying degrees of creative success, We Sell The Dead arrive seeming fully formed and quite distinct from anything that those involved have done before. Inspired by the alluring grimness of the Jack The Ripper mythos, Heaven Doesn’t Want You… is a purposeful exercise in macabre heavy metal melodrama, but not one that conforms to a familiar formula.

Lightly dusted with cadaverous atmosphere, songs like Leave Me Alone and Turn It Over owe plenty to 80s Sabbath and gothic rock but for once the old cliché about bands sounding like the sum of their influences and experiences rings true; despite doing nothing especially radical, We Sell The Dead sound impressively, if weirdly and very subtly, original. Even something as straightforward as Trust, an epic doom song with a gloriously overwrought chorus, pulls off the neat trick of sounding simultaneously familiar and almost overwhelmingly fresh. Similarly, Pale And Perfect’s brooding prog metal surge hinges on lumbering, detuned alt-metal riffs that nobody sane would consider particularly radical and Imagine is a cheerfully straightforward exercise in rumbling melodic metal, but somehow the sense that one has heard all this before never arrives. It certainly helps that, as ever, Apollo sings every word as if he is pleading with the Ancient Gods – or, perhaps, Jack the Ripper himself – for mercy. As comfortable on a febrile, stripped-down ballad like Too Cold To Touch as he is ranting his soulful way through opening epic Echoes Of An Ugly Past, the singer is arguably the true star here.

Fittingly, there are many moments here when the band sound every bit as thrilled by the whole thing as they doubtless hope the listener will be. In an era where many bands seem content to mimic each other in a futile dance of creative banality, We Sell The Dead stand out like a lantern in the murky, 19th-century London mists.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 48:26 minutes | 931 MB | Genre: Jazz

Will Bernard has received his due for sideman work in a variety of settings, but you rarely hear anybody talk about stylistic range when it comes to his own leader dates. This is the album that could and should change that. Over the course of eleven originals, Bernard continually frames himself in different ways, constantly redefining his outlook and mining fresh musical veins with some help from four A-list musicians organist Brian Charette, saxophonist John Ellis, bassist Ben Allison, and drummer Allison Miller. It’s a winning formula, making Out & About an out-and-out success.

The album opens with “Happy Belated,” a funky number with a twist or two that falls right into Bernard’s comfort zone. Allison’s fulsome bass and Miller’s solid drumming lock everything in place, Bernard and Ellis sync up when an angular interlude appears, and metric adjustments are made without altering the natural feel of the piece. It’s a number that could’ve set Bernard up perfectly for a funk-themed record, but he doesn’t oblige. Instead, he turns sharply at every opportunity. “Not Too Fancy” a brief and intimate guitar-and-bass duo that’s quaint, serene, and comforting follows, completely changing the direction implied with “Happy Belated.” Then there’s “Next Guest,” a piece that flies and gives Ellis, Bernard, Allison, and Miller a chance to really dialogue with one another; “Habenera,” a shape-shifting avant-tango that benefits from Charette’s out-of-the-box organ work; “Redwood (Business Casual),” a number energized by Miller’s propulsive ride cymbal and powerful soloing; and “Homeward Bound,” a straight-eighth selection that plays up the partnership between rhythmic recurrence and mood evolution.

With each of the five numbers that remain, Bernard and his buddies continue to defy expectations. “Homebody” carries some heartland inflections and gives Ellis and Bernard a chance to continually cross paths and dance, “Suggested Reading” sets Bernard’s slinky guitar against Allison’s stout yet slippery bass lines and Miller’s happening grooves, and “Full Sweep” delivers wonderfully off-balanced hits and harmonic shifts. Then things wind down with a gravity-reduced exploration called “Pan Seared” and the swaying title track. After all of that it’s tempting to see this as an identity crisis record. The truth, however, is something much simpler: This is Will Bernard, in all of his multifaceted glory.

Xavier Davis professional career as a Jazz pianist took off when the legendary vocalist Betty Carter spotted his outstanding talent at the 1994 International Association of Jazz Educators convention in Boston while he was performing with his college ensemble. It was her who brought Xavier to New York, hiring him exclusively as the pianist of her working trio. Today, Xavier is one of the most accomplished Jazz pianists world wide. Having led master classes and clinics all over the world and coming from a family of music educators, passing on knowledge and skills to young musicians is very important to Xavier. As such, he is proud to be Associate Professor of Jazz Piano at Michigan State University. Xavier was also member of the teaching staff in the Jazz department of the Juilliard School of Music in New York for six years prior to that.

Xavier’s development as a musician has been greatly influenced by the inspiration and guidance he has received from Carl Allen, James Williams, and Billy Hart, whom he sees and respects as his great mentors. In addition to Betty and Carl, Xavier has performed and recorded with many other world-famous Jazz artists like the legendary Freddie Hubbard, Tom Harrell, Christian McBride, Regina Carter, Stefon Harris, Abbey Lincoln, Wynton Marsalis, Don Byron, Nat Adderley, Nicholas Payton, Jon Faddis, Jimmy Greene, Steve Turre, Al Foster, and Jeremy Pelt among others. During the 1999 – 2000 season, Xavier worked with the Boy’s Choir of Harlem as their Musical Director. He also played keyboard for the television series “Cosby.” His talent has been featured on more than 50 albums. Xavier is part of the Christian McBride Big Band and was featured on Christian’s album ‘The Good Feeling’, which won a GRAMMY award in 2012.

As a bandleader, Xavier has released two critically acclaimed albums – ‘Dance of Life’ and ‘The Innocence of Youth’. “The pianist [Xavier Davis] simply knows how to make every note on his instrument sing, and he invariably finds the richest area of the keyboard for voicing his chords.” says writer Bob Blumenthal. Jazz Times reviewer John Murph writes “…the music exudes a mature, nonchalant ease and cozy empathy that make this…a rewarding listen.” Down Beat gave the CD, “Dance of Life,” four stars, stating, “Davis steps out with an accomplished debut.” Xavier is currently working on his long awaited follow-up to these albums.

In 2005, Xavier became the first person to receive the prestigious “New Works Grant” twice from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation under the auspices of Chamber Music America. He has won awards at several festivals as well as in Down Beat magazine.

Being a gifted composer, arranger, and producer of music, Xavier has composed and arranged music for outstanding artists like Carl Allen, Regina Carter, and Hans Schuman. He has co-produced the album “Wise Children” by Tom Harrell and recently produced the new album of singer Lizzie Thomas. Xavier is also a passionate and experienced film and commercial music composer/producer.

What do you mean, “Six evolutions”? It’s an intriguing title, almost esoteric… The cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who needs no introduction after a worldwide career of some fifty years, pens here his third (and ultimate, according to him) recording of Bach’s Solo Cello Suites. The first, while he was in his twenties, gave rise to enthusiasm, the second—in his forties—gave rise to emotion, so what will this final vision give rise to, now that he is in his late sixties? Serenity and joy, probably, and the completion of a triple discographic evolution. That being said, we still cannot explain the “Six evolutions”, and you will have to dive into a small corner of the accompanying booklet to find an indication, giving little more information, it is true, since it comes with no clarification: 1) Nature is at play, 2) Journey toward the light, 3) Celebration, 4) Construction/Development, 5) The struggle for hope, and 6) Epiphany. Well… Whatever it be, and despite what he said—and the amazing quality of this interpretation—let’s meet in 2038 to find out if he doesn’t decide to give a new interpretation in his eighties!

Robert Schumann’s four symphonies are undoubtedly highlights of the symphonic repertoire and are a true challenge for any orchestra. The numbering of the symphonies produces a degree of confusion — the Symphony in D minor from 1841 was fundamentally revised by Schumann in 1851 and was then given number 4. The recording on this Album is a reconstruction of the original version and is in fact Schumann’s ‘Second’. It is remarkable to see how fast Schumann could work. He maintained a detailed and accurate administration of his activities. This means we know that as soon as he had an idea he was often able to write down a piano sketch in a few days, which was then instrumented during a very short period of time. The piano versions were often performed on piano by his wife Clara Schumann before a critical circle of friends at home. His direct involvement with the orchestral world in Leipzig, where his friend Felix Mendelssohn was in charge, and later in Dusseldorf — where he himself was Stdtischer Musikdirektor — meant that once his symphonies were orchestrated they could be programmed and performed immediately. Compared with our modern days this was an incredible enterprise — nobody was familiar with this complicated music and it was played from manuscripts. The works had not been published yet and every part was copied by hand!

Anton Bruckner, born in the Austrian village of Ansfelden on 4 September 1824, first worked as assistant schoolmaster at an unsightly school in an equally unsightly hamlet not far away called Windhaag, near Linz. When he took his last breath on 11 October 1896 as one of the greatest composers Austria ever produced, in a tiny chamber (Kustodenstckl) of the Viennese palace of Belvedere that had kindly been placed at his disposal by the imperial court, the finale of his Ninth Symphony was well under way but still unfinished. Although the rapid advance of industrialisation has made great incursions here and there on the Upper Austrian landscape, and although the ravages of time have eaten away at the integrity of Bruckner’s Lebensraum, there are still more than enough sites to be found which could certainly have formed a backdrop to his early symphonies. In that sense, listening to the First Symphony is a trip of discovery through Bruckner’s countryside, within the triangle formed by Ansfelden (birthplace), St. Florian (with its famous Stift, where Bruckner, first as a choirboy and later as a mature musician, found the much-needed distance from the workaday world to play the extremely beautiful organ) and lastly Linz, with its majestic Cathedral, where Bruckner held the not inconsiderable post of organist until 1868. The powerful organ tones, with their unsuspected force, would be heard like glorious sound pillars in his symphonic epos.

R.E.M.’s fourth studio recording, Lifes Rich Pageant, is a pivotal release that saw the band evolving into bona fide rock legends. It was their first album to achieve Gold status and is included on Slant Magazine’s “100 Best Albums of the Eighties.” Teaming up with producer Don Gehman, the album is a politically-conscious work that addresses social progress and environmental issues. Lifes Rich Pageant includes the hit singles “Fall On Me” and “Superman.” The album is a hard-rock affair that is both inspirational and uplifting.

Fables of the Reconstruction was intentionally murky, and Lifes Rich Pageant was constructed as its polar opposite. Teaming with producer Don Gehman, who previously worked with John Mellencamp, R.E.M. developed their most forceful record to date. Where previous records kept the rhythm section in the background, Pageant emphasizes the beat, and the band turns in its hardest rockers to date, including the anthemic “Begin the Begin” and the punky “Just a Touch.” But the cleaner production also benefits the ballads and the mid-tempo janglers, particularly since it helps reveal Michael Stipe’s growing political obsessions, especially on the environmental anthems “Fall on Me” and “Cuyahoga.” The group hasn’t entirely left myths behind — witness the Civil War ballad “Swan Swan H” — but the band sound more contemporary both musically and lyrically than they did on either Fables or Murmur, which helps give the record an extra kick. And even with excellent songs like “I Believe,” “Flowers of Guatemala,” “These Days,” and “What if We Give It Away,” it’s ironic that the most memorable moment comes from the garage rock obscurity “Superman,” which is sung with glee by Mike Mills.

Rokia Traor is probably one of the most beautiful voices that Mali has sent us in recent years. Beautiful, but also inhabited and above all, engaged. With N So, an album she has once again put together with John Parrish, the official producer of PJ Harvey, Rokia Traor sings in revolt agains the uprooting of people. A combat song she leads with a host of prestigious artists at her side, like John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, writer Toni Morrison or even the folk singer Devendra Banhart. Of a rare and tangible power.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 39:18 minutes | 480 MB | Genre: Indie Rock

Ron Gallo spent close to a decade exploring the boundaries of his blues, country, and roots rock influences with his band Toy Soldiers, but when he jumped ship to go solo, he left all of that behind. At least that’s the very strong impression given by Gallo’s second solo album, 2017’s Heavy Meta. Gallo’s first solo effort, 2014’s Ronny, was a step away from Toy Soldiers’ sound into a brighter and poppier direction, but with Heavy Meta, he’s done an about-face into raw, wiry, guitar-based rock & roll. Backed by bassist Joe Bisirri and drummer Dylan Sevey, Heavy Meta is a gritty, energetic exercise in punk-informed 21st century garage rock, with Gallo’s buzzy, rough and ready guitar figures and high-attitude vocals front and center in the mix at all times. Even the relatively subdued numbers like “Black Market Eyes,” “Started a War,” and “All the Punks Are Domesticated” are sharp-witted and lyrically cutting (especially the latter, a bitter tirade against the cultural abuses of contemporary thirty-somethings). And when Gallo and his bandmates shift into high gear on “Young Lady, You’re Scaring Me,” “Please Yourself,” and “Put the Kids to Bed,” the fusion of Gallo’s dirty but melodic melodies and waves of lyrical swagger suggests how Bob Dylan might have ended up if his primal influence had been Black Francis instead of Woody Guthrie. And chances are slim anyone will release a better song in the foreseeable future about bad parenting than the ferocious “Why Do You Have Kids?” Gallo’s songwriting is Heavy Meta’s greatest strength, but the production by Gallo and Bisirri is excellent, documenting the performances with force and clarity but retaining just the right amount of rough-edged texture to keep this music tough and effective. Heavy Meta is the sound of Ron Gallo reinventing himself, and he does it so well that one could view his impressive body of work with Toy Soldiers simply as a warm-up; this is tough, smart, impassioned rock & roll with a sense of purpose and lots of swagger, performed with the confidence of a veteran and the scrap of a newcomer. It’s heady stuff well worth your attention.

An extremely influential vocalist despite having a rather short career, Roy Hamilton had both classical training and gospel experience. Hamilton studied commercial art in high school and was a heavyweight Golden Gloves boxer before starting his music career as a member of the Searchlight Singers. During the mid- and late ’50s, Hamilton’s dramatic, searing voice and treatments of such songs as “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “If I Loved You,” “Ebb Tide,” and “Unchained Melody” were enormously popular. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” topped the R&B charts for two months in 1954, while “Unchained Melody” topped the R&B charts for three weeks, and was his only Top Ten pop hit. Jackie Wilson and Roy Brown were among the singers whose sound was affected by Hamilton, while the Righteous Brothers did their own versions of “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “Ebb Tide,” and “Unchained Melody” (which later got new life via the film Ghost). Hamilton had to retire from 1956 to 1958 due to exhaustion. He suffered a stroke in 1969 and died at age 40. ~ Ron Wynn

In the first fifteen years of its existence, Calefax performed just two works from the Romantic period: the brief and motoric, and as such rather un-Romantic Miniature Overture from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, and a suite of Franz Liszt’s late piano works. The latter typifies Calefax’s somewhat troubled relationship with Romanticism. While Liszt’s extremely sober late piano works are indeed rooted in the Romantic era, they were unmistakenly ahead of their time, pointing to the twentieth-century quest for a way out of tonality’s stranglehold.
