Talk to anyone about Cuban piano players and invariably the name Emiliano Salvador will pop up. Most will agree that Emiliano was in a class by himself. His personality and individualism as a soloist were strong enough to assure immediate recognition, yet he was never obtrusive to the point of using gimmicks. He was a brilliant pianist, composer and arranger, and a seminal figure in the resurgence of Latin jazz, a style that had long ago been given up for dead. A second LP was issued in 1980, titled “Emiliano Salvador 2” which featured “Changuito” Quintana, as well as other notables.

Salvador’s 1979 first album included Irakere hornmen D’Rivera, Sandoval and Varona and nueva trova singing star Pablo Milanes. The cuts, and Salvador’s piano, move between fine fairly típico-based numbers with jazz soloing, (including a fine version of “Son de la Loma,” and more strongly jazz-oriented arrangements. Maybe not a “landmark” album as claimed, but a very satisfying one.

She’s one of a kind. Falcon Jane’s songs are beautifully balanced: honest yet subtle lyrics, straightforward yet ethereal production, and deeply emotional yet bright, fun songwriting. They’re founders of “plez rock”, a music genre based on pleasantness and feeling good. It’s cute, and maybe a bit cheeky, but it’s dead on. Falcon Jane’s songs convey depth and lightness in equal measure, and they’re a joy to listen to. In short, it’s absolutely pleasant rock.

Thanks to the fact that good music was heard in his house “all his life” Gabriel Peluffo was infected by the passion for tango that his parents showed. “One always has the Berretín to venture into another style,” he says while laughing accomplice in the meeting he had with Underlining at the Museo del Tango. The themes chosen for the new album, which is called “De barro y asfalto”, “try to recreate a personal world” and do not have a style or temporal logic. The frontman of Buitres is clear: “I’m not leaving anything.” For the tranquility of fans around the world, the Vultures project is still standing. As it is said in the Rio de la Plata, “tango sooner or later comes to you”, and surely this artistic proposal by Gabriel Peluffo will take him to the homes of many of his followers of multiple generations, thus fulfilling the sentence.

First album produced by Hamilton of Holland in homage to the centenary of Jacob of the Bandolim. The albums name refers to the ten-string mandolin used by Hamilton and the jazzy character of the work. The recording was made by Hamilton of Holland Trio, formed by Guto Wirtti (acoustic bass) and Thiago da Serrinha (percussion). The recordings were made at the Tambor studio (Rio de Janeiro) and Hamilton used the rare ten-string mandolin that belonged to Jacob. The instrument, a gift given by the Jacob do Mandolim Institute and Casa do Choro, is being used for the first time in a recording.

Alto saxophonist Allan Praskin has a formative influence on the stylistic emphasis on the music of the Jazz Consensus, whose clear domain is … contemporary bebop. “Happy Frog”, the first track on the album, is an Adelhard Roidinger composition where his bass is featured. The piece presents the melody on bass, doubled by saxophonist Allan Praskin on Giant Steps-like changes after an eight bar recurring vamp. “Longing”, penned by Allan Praskin, a beautiful ballad brings forth emotions of loneliness, loss, and melancholy through its haunting melody. It also distinguishes itself in coming to a full stop before a short cadenza in the middle of the melody section. “Beak to Beak”, is Allan Praskin’s swinging ”Be-Bop” inspired variation on the popular standard “Cheek to Cheek”. Obviously apparent, is Allan’s vivacious and resplendent solo owering over the changes as they fly by like a lighthouse and a flock of geese. Here as always, he never isappoints.“Delphi”, I wrote in honor of Allan’s daughter of the same name, now a fine musician herself. This work begins with a rubato introduction played in an open, semi-free style. It is followed by a melody based on a four note motif developed over sixteen bars. It follows a standard A/B/A form with an open two chord coda, which evolves rhythmically from the jazz 3/4 to a samba 3/4 meter. BTW, I’m proud to have suggested the name “Delphi” after the oracle, for Allan’s beautifuland talented daughter.

“Love Song”, is Lala Kovacev’s compositional contribution. It is based on an old Serbian folk song. It brings to mind the solitude of rolling hills and majesty of lush forests that bathe the Serbian ountryside. Especially noteworthy is Lala’s solo played on the drum set with bare hands emulating indigenous percussion instruments used by the locals there. Finally, “It’s No One”, is our take on the popular standard “It’s You or No One” played at a breakneck “run for your life” tempo. All in all, I’m pleased that producer Rainer Wiedensohler has chosen to make this wonderful album available to you once again after several decades, and am sure that it will provide as much pleasure in listening, as was present in its creation.

Texas’ genre-bending rock ‘n’ roller Israel Nash presents his latest long play, Lifted. It is a modern day hippie-spiritual, a tonic for those needing to put aside the mess of the daily grind. With luscious beds of strings, horns and well adorned towering walls of sound, Lifted finds Nash continuing his tradition of creating a sonic experience of feeling that is at once both vast and intimate soaring and untamed at times, placid and sincerely personal at others.

There’s something somewhat cosmic about Israel Nash. With his voice, flying away in echoes, and the subtle distortions of his compositions: everything is soft, simple, airy. But if you take a closer look, each note has its own specific role to play to create such harmony. Nash is well seasoned. For this Texan spiritual hippie, music represents an emotional escape where all experiences are possible. With Lifted, he penned a fifth multi-shade album, filled with inspirations and stories. He is accompanied by his long-time band: Joey and Aaron McClellan on the guitar and bass, Eric Swanson on the steel, and Josh Gleishmann on the drums. He added strings and brass to this ensemble to inject rounder sounds, intelligently filling out the ensemble. In this album co-produced by Ted Young, who most notably worked with the Rolling Stones, quality is in no way set aside. But for Nash, Lifted is also a musical experimentation. It drew inspiration from John Cage’s composition methods and the I Ching Book of Changes to create a sound image. Lifted is a listening experience that dives into the poetic and wild world of its author. Wild, or rather rustic, as it was recorded in his own ranch of Dripping Springs, Texas. An important place for country music as for a few years, it has been the home of the Dripping Springs Reunion festival run by Willie Nelson. A groovy sound, a perfect blend of Americana, psychedelic country and lyrical harmonics, Lifted is a subtle mix between the Beach Boys and a hippie version of the Byrds. Twelve tracks that reflect a specific temporality, like on Sweet Springs. Floating sensations during a colourful spring. Israel Nash simply creates a dream. There is neither logic nor reality. At the same time solar and lunar on the rock ballad Northwest Stars, the Texan singer effortlessly enchants the listener.  –  Clara Bismuth

This is one musician that is extremely determined and passionate about the songwriting craft. Speer also shares unique original tunes that harken back to a classic era. The songwriting is impressive and it offers much in the way of passion and compelling-thought provoking lyrical content. Speer is a real breath of fresh air and a shock to the everyday musical system presently in place.

While there are no liner notes to accompany pianist Jon Davis’ third date for the Posi-Tone imprint, there’s a quote inside the package, attributed to author Anne Rice, that gets to the heart of the matter: “None of us really changes over time. We only become more fully what we are.” So is personal evolution and growth an illusion? Is development a figment of the individual’s imagination? Yes and no would be the correct answer(s). It really just comes down to perspective. Plenty of people would say that deepening one’s very being is change. Others would argue that change and self-actualization are two very different things. This writer’s take? It’s a semantics-based argument that’s not worth having in this particular instance. Better to focus on the music than wax philosophical.

Changes Over Time is a piano trio date that splits focus almost evenly between familiar covers and originals. That’s not such a novel concept for Davis, given the fact that the same exact thing can be said for One Up Front (Posi-Tone, 2013) and Moving Right Along (Posi-Tone, 2015). But who gives a damn about novel concepts if the music sounds this good?! There’s a level of comfort and sophistication in these performances that eludes most trios, and Davis, who already had it all together when he started his trio run with Posi-Tone, seems to be getting better and better with each date.

There are major milestones during a singer’s career. For his first project with Blues Chair, Kenny Chesney penned a very personal album. Songs For The Saints works as a sort of testimony. In 2017, the popular country star’s house on Saint John Island was devastated by hurricane Irma. A difficult time, shared with other inhabitants, which he had to overcome. Coproduced by Buddy Cammon, the album honours three important figures for Chesney. Ziggy Marley joins him on Love for Love City. A love song for the city devastated by the disaster, coated in percussions reminiscent of island sounds. Then comes Jimmy Buffet’s turn on a more country-style ballad, Trying to Reason With Hurricane Season, and Mindy Smith on Better Boat… Chesney tries to evoke redeeming places that give a strong sense of freedom. Moving and sincere, he uses this album to grieve over these events with a pop, laid-back country music. But Songs For The Saintshowever isn’t a self-treatment project. Like he stresses on the first eponymous track, Chesney also sings to bring solace and support to other Irma victims. Deprived of pathos and sadness, this opus makes us want to sail towards new horizons, like the album cover unequivocally suggests.  – Anna Coluthe

Lena Hall is a Tony Award winner and Grammy nominee, recently portraying the dual starring roles of Hedwig and Yitzhak in Hedwig and the Angry Inch in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Following her Tony-winning Broadway run, she toured North America with Josh Groban on his Stages tour. She originated the role of Nicola in the Tony-winning musical Kinky Boots, and can be seen on HBO’s Girls, Amazon Prime’s Good Girls Revolt, and heard voicing the fan-favorite role of “Countess Coloratura” on My Little Pony. In 2018, Lena will be appearing opposite Jennifer Connelly in TNT’s science fiction epic Snowpiercer.
