“Say what you will about the 75-year-old Wilhelm Kempff’s “old school” Goldberg Variations, with its unembellished Aria, seeming surface plainness, and avoidance of virtuosic sheen. However, I say that this 1970 recording remains among the most beautiful and heartfelt piano versions of Bach’s keyboard tour-de-force. Within Kempff’s straight-laced, intimate parameters you encounter the most subtle nuances, changes of color, dynamic gradations, and accents. I’ve rarely heard Variation 9’s lines (the canon at the fourth) sing out so calmly and naturally, or the three minor-key variations emerge with comparable ease, fluidity, and melodic cogency. Yet in Variation 27 (the canon at the ninth) Kempff also reveals how well he can deliver rapid, detaché playing when so inclined. Observing the A-section repeats, Kempff doesn’t embellish them so much as he refocuses voicings and balances between hands, to convincing effect. If you missed DG Galleria’s excellent 1994 digital remastering when it first appeared, get it now by way of ArkivMusic.com’s on-demand reprint program. A unique and treasurable release.” (Jed Distler, ClassicsToday)

One of a host of jazz musicians with deep roots in classical music, Roland Hanna graduated from NYC’s prestigious Julliard School of Music and worked with the likes of Charles Mingus, Elvin Jones, Sarah Vaughan and Jim Hall. Although Hanna had originally intended the pieces as a suite for cello and jazz ensemble, trio members American bass maestro Dave Holland, and Swiss drummer Daniel Humair fit in perfectly with the change of plans. Holland had just taken leave from Miles Davis, and Humair was about to go on tour with Oscar Peterson. Prelude combines Bach and a jazz-rock backbeat, while Hanna states that Allemande and the blues waltz Courrante ‘are the real gems of the Suite’, combining European classical with Afro-American music. Both pieces feature a finely integrated trio with open borders between accompaniment and solo. Written for his Gemini wife, Child of Gemini depicts her ‘changing mood and final resoluteness’. The modal Arsenic and New Lace drives ahead in an impressionistic ¾. The jazzy Ha-Ho Da are the first two letters of each player’s name, and signifies the group unity on this swinging medium-up blues. Outstanding solos by all three. The ballad Blue Lily finds Hanna ruminating on electric keyboard, and for critic/writer J.E. Berendt, A Statement For The Truth ‘notes the climax of the session, the brilliant finale to a suite whose individual movements are lined up in a contrasting, yet seamless row.” Hanna treats his rhythm section as equals; the solos are outstanding, and all three have ample room to stretch.

„Sir Roland Hanna’s 1971 sessions for MPS pairs the veteran pianist with bassist David Holland and drummer Daniel Humair, focusing exclusively on the leader’s originals that were originally intended as a suite, though they stand very well individually, too. The first four selections display the influence of the classical portion of Hanna’s studies, especially the Bach-flavored “Prelude-So You’ll Know My Name” and the lovely “Courrante-Blue.” The lively blues “Ha-Ho-Da” showcases each of the three musicians in turn. Hanna switches to an electric piano (set to sound like a harp) for the ballad “Blue Lilly” and wraps the sessions with “A Statement of the Truth,” a complex bop line with a nod to Lennie Tristano. Overall, the music is not quite up to the level of other recordings under Hanna’s leadership, though it is still a worthwhile LP. Since MPS ceased operations not long after the 1972 release of this album, it may be somewhat difficult to find.“ (Ken Dryden, AMG)

Todd Dulaney is a gospel/worship artist noted for his smooth classic soul delivery and contemporary arranging and songwriting styles. “Your Great Name” is a declaration of pursuit and passion that speaks to the reverence, love and power that comes from the name of Jesus. Todd Dulaney delivers this album with the perfect balance of beauty and boldness. This ONE name provokes the listener to have great hope, determined faith, and unending love that dismantles the pain, fears and defeats of any day. Distinctively expressed; the drive artistically, figuratively, sonically, scripturally, and literally compels those to become relentless in every aspect of life.

Your Great Name is the highly anticipated new Gospel worship release from Todd Dulaney. The common thread of Dulaney’s music is to invigorate listeners to worship, make bold confessions of their faith, and incorporate musical elements that reflect an array of cultures. The lead single and title track “Your Great Name” is already being incorporated into worship services across the country. “This song drives home the message that Jesus is the answer,” states Delaney. “Stand Forever” is another standout cut on the album. Dulaney derived inspiration for the song from the beloved passage of scripture that states, “Heaven and Earth shall pass away, but my words will never pass away.” With a message that God’s Word stands forever, it encourages listeners to be bold, to be resolute in their belief, and to be committed to carrying this message to others.

Electro-jazz outfit Tokyo Zawinul Bach return with its first album since 2008, though this time it’s an entirely solo effort with keyboard wizard Masayasu Tzboguchi playing all of the instruments as well as handling mixing and production duties. Imagine a collision between Kraftwerk, YMO and Weather Report viewed through a twenty-first century filter and you have something of an idea of the TZB sound.

The nine tracks on Afrodita feature a blend of Fender Rhodes, synths, samples and slightly out of kilter beats that make for a refreshing mix. Titles such as Nostalgica, Nomadic and Tribal Junction reflect the mixture of musical influences featured with moments of retro electro sitting alongside more Afro-centric rhythms, and this together with some hip-hop beats on some tracks makes it difficult to pigeonhole Tzboguchi’s music.

Three tracks in particular deserve special attention. Nostalgica, with its reedy synths and Fender Rhodes has hints of classic jazz fusion from the seventies and eighties, yet remains firmly rooted in the present day. Sagittarius has a wonderful head-nodding beat with an infectious main synth riff that pulls you back again and again, while Pastel Yogurt is an intense fusion workout built around a bass synth riff that features an intriguing tempo-shift half-way through. Afrodita is a strong outing from start to finish and is well worth investigating.

Tallitsch’s tenor playing on this record shows his maturity and evolution as an artist. Tallitsch’s previous releases as a leader include Duality (2005), Medicine Man (Origin, 2008), and Perspective (Origin, 2009).In addition to having many of his compositions and arrangements played by vocalists and musicians throughout the United States, Tallitsch has had his works performed by individual dancers from the Martha Graham Dance Company at various choreographer showcase venues. Whether father Ulf did actually place a guitar in the crib of his baby son Eric or not, here they now are unite as a guitar duo on “Father and Son”, a personal album and a virtuoso conversation in the art of contemporary jazz guitar. They can swing or play gentle ballads together, go extrovert and percussive, they can tell stories from far-off lands, or sometimes from their Swedish homeland. Ulf and Eric Wakenius have a sensitivity and a sense of atmosphere which creates magical guitar moments.

The musical backgrounds of father and son are very different. Ulf Wakenius had ten years as a member of the Oscar Peterson Quartet and also worked with the two legends of the bass, Ray Brown and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. He is known for his collaborations with great jazz figures such as Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker and Michel Legrand, and of course for his work with the singer Youn Sun Nah. He is not just one of the most busy and in-demand players, but also the most creative jazz guitarists of our era. His son Eric, by contrast was born in 1988 and surrounded as a teenager by the rock and pop music of the nineties. After that, he spent a lot of time in Los Angeles, where he picked up many different stylistic directions from that city’s musical melting pot. “He has played a lot of electric guitar”, explains Wakenius, “but — like me — he has fallen in love with the acoustic guitar and its many possibilities.”

The two guitarists take the opportunity on “Father And Son” to explore and to exploit these multiple possibilities to the full: “Irish Vagabond” combines full-on Irish folk music with Arabic elements. “Mistral” is rhythmically punchy, almost like a rock tune, and also has echoes of Al Di Meola. In this tune Ulf Wakenius recounts an experience he had while on tour with Youn Sun Nah. At the Avignon Festival, a powerful wind from the South “almost blew me off the stage, so I decided to write a song about it.” Their “Eleanor Rigby” is captivating; as they honour the Beatles, they achieve a sonority remarkably close to a string quartet. “Paco’s Delight” pays tribute to the unforgettable Paco de Lucía, but their Spanish flamenco technique is also imbued with the buoyancy and verve of Django Reinhardt’s Hot Club swing. With their arrangement of the jazz-fusion classic “Birdland”, Ulf and Eric Wakenius remember another of the pantheon of musical immortals, Joe Zawinul. And finally, Eric Wakenius takes the listener by surprise as a highly persuasive singer in the album’s title track by Cat Stevens, which deals with a tricky father-son relationship. “Eric and I are luckier – we don’t have those problems,” says Ulf Wakenius. The song also justifies its place in the selection because Cat Stevens has a Swedish mother and a close connection to Sweden.

Since this album is a family matter, it feels natural for both men to show their affection for their native country. They do that in a respectful, Nordic and melancholy way in “Meine schöne Heimat / Vem kan segla förutan vind”, but they also remember the most significant Swedish jazz musician of recent times, Esbjörn Svensson who died so tragically early. Ulf Wakenius was the first musician to do a tribute album (“Love is Real”) in 2008, while the pianistic genius Svensson was still alive. That was an album full of surprise; the ways Wakenius found to bring the e.s.t. compositions so convincingly into the sphere of the guitar were astonishing. The medley of “Dodge The Dodo” and “When God Created The Coffee Break” which Eric and Ulf play as a duet here is stupendous. And it all sounds far easier than it is. As Wakenius has remarked: “to master an acoustic guitar is really to tame a beast, but if you succeed, the rewards are tremendous!” In “Father And Son”, the listener can now also reap those remarkably rich rewards.

Berliner Philharmoniker – 2013 New Year’s Eve Concert with Simon Rattle 2013 1080p WEB-DL AAC2.0 H.264-CHDWEB

At the end of the year, the Berliner Philharmoniker traditionally leave Johann Strauss and Viennese waltzes to their philharmonic colleagues in the Austrian capital. This however does not mean that the Berlin New Year’s Eve concert did not put the audience in the mood for dancing. On this occasion, works by Dvořák, Khachaturian and Hindemith were on the programme, with dances of Slavic, Armenian-Soviet, and somewhat brooding German variants.

Not only the audience was enthralled by the magnificent sounds and rhythmic energy of the Berliner Philharmoniker under its chief conductor Simon Rattle: The critic of RBB-Kulturradio called the delicately flavoured series of symphonic dances “incredibly zestful and well served”.

Dvořák’s dances, four of which were to be heard in this concert, reveal the influence of the earlier waltzes of Johannes Brahms and yet are unmistakably Dvořák through the Czech composer’s use of Slavic rhythms and melodic ingenuity. And then there was Aram Khachaturian’s Gayaneh suite. This music has had a special relationship with the home town of the Philharmoniker ever since Billy Wilder made fun of both Coca-Cola capitalists and soviet-loyal East German communists in his Cold War comedy set in Berlin One, Two, Three to the sounds of the Sabre Dance.

This concert was a dual premiere for Yannick Nézet-Séguin: for the first time, the Canadian conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker at their last concert of the season at the Waldbühne. In addition, he presented himself, for the first time since his debut with the orchestra in 2010, as an interpreter of the two major Czech national composers, Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák.

With his orchestra cycle Má vlast, Smetana created a musical portrait of his home country; particularly the second part, The Moldau, became the embodiment of Czech music. In this stirring symphonic poem, the composer describes the course of the Vltava river – from its source passing by merry village festivals, hunting scenes, dangerous white water rapids and the majestic city of Prague – until it disappears into the distance after passing the castle of Vyšehrad. In the work, Smetana combines rhythmic and melodic elements of Czech folklore with stylistic devices of Western symphonic music.

The same also applies for Antonín Dvořák, who first oriented himself towards composers like Wagner, Schumann and Liszt before fashioning his own musical language, shaped by the Bohemian idiom, in the Slavonic Dances. Thus his Sixth Symphony contains many allusions to Czech folk songs and dances that are typical of Dvořák’s music. The Violin Concerto, which the publisher Simrock commissioned from the Prague composer, is also inspired by Slavic dance rhythms. The captivating piece is played by the Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili. At her last concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2012, she was acclaimed by the press as a “ballerina on the violin”.

“Thrill Box” is the debut solo release from young French accordionist Vincent Peirani, named in reference to his instrument, the accordion. Peirani’s unique approach is full of surprises: he can make his accordion sound like an organ, a piano, a wind instrument or a human voice. He also sings in unison with the accordion, revealing an excellent voice. But “Thrill Box” is, above all, a trio album, and equal praise is deserved by pianist Michael Wollny and bassist Michel Benita. As well, guest soprano saxophonist Emile Parisien and Peirani’s old friend Michel Portal on bass clarinet and bandoneon appear on a couple of tracks each.

The accordion has grown to become an important voice in the new, distinctively European styles of jazz. It has proved to be capable of a vast expressive range, with a seemingly infinite repertoire of textures and tone colours. Peirani is the latest virtuoso to turn the old squeeze-box into a thrill-box. His own compositions often build from the tiniest threads of sound into whole musical landscapes, and he manages to find something new in a whole variety of other material, from folk songs to Thelonious Monk. His trio is completed by pianist Michael Wollny and bassist Michel Benita, plus some interesting guests.
