Drummer and composer Eric Schaefer has been described as the central shining star of the German jazz scene. On “Kyoto mon Amour”, he takes on the challenge of building bridges between Japanese and Western music. Over more than a decade, he has made three visits to Korea and stayed in Japan no fewer than six times, trips which have greatly influenced Schaefer’s musical psyche.

The music of “Kyoto mon Amour” is improvised in both the Japanese and the European way – and what emerges is something completely new. It is analogous to what happens when everything is pared back to basics in the calligraphy of “Shoshu-san”: in the music all the tone-colours and rhythms are subservient to the beauty of the melody. On the 400-year old tune “Rokudan” it is composer Yatsuhashi Kengyō whose spirit reigns. The flow of sound from the koto has a clarinet melody as counterpoint. It then gradually and slowly becomes imbued by Schaefer and Eckhardt with more dynamic intensity and swing. One of the pivotal pieces on the album is the slowly evolving “Santoka’s Walk” which allows itself to stray off on all sorts of subsidiary paths. It is inspired by an epigram from the Zen monk Santoka Taneda: “On travels touching this and that, recording the mind´s changing impressions.“ Schaefer has made this idea into the leitmotif which runs right through the CD. This album bringing together the West and the Far East does not only have reflective and lyrical tracks. On “Ticket To Osaka,” for example, Schaefer captures the commotion and bustle of the big city. On “Kansai Two-Face”, a nostalgic melody on the koto encounters an urgent and effervescent improvisation from the clarinet which is spurred on by the rhythm players. That very brief moment encompasses the contradictions of present-day Japan, it brings together opulence and simplicity, modernity and tradition in a confined space. At first sight, the final track, Ravel’s “Pavane de la Belle au bois dormant” from “Mother Goose” might seem a surprise, but there is a context: around 1900 the French impressionists in both art and music fell under the spell of “japonisme,” and their enthusiasm gave rise to work of enduring quality. Eric Schaefer’s quartet has found fascinating ways to carry this lineage forward into our time.

Norwegian pianist & composer Eyolf Dale delivers the supremely lyrical and poetic “Return To Mind”, his 4th album, following his highly acclaimed Spellemann Prize (Norwegian Grammy) nominated album “Wolf Valley”. Since releasing his Edition debut in June 2016, Eyolf has expanded and developed his already refined and warm sound into a powerfully emotive force. Radiating elegance and poise, “Return To Mind” confirms Eyolf Dale’s promise and reputation as a strong band leader, creative composer and an expressive soloist with a taste for melody and interplay that summons powerful musical images.

Return to Mind’s hugely rich and vibrant sound moves gracefully between emotive pedal notes, balanced by the lush voicings of an all-star Norwegian horn section. With a superior clarity of sound and a romantic sensibility to its compositions Return to Mind is an album that demonstrates the full range, musicianship and talent of Eyolf Dale, an artist who continues to command extensive attention and growing profile. With the piano firmly centre stage, the music is arresting and powerfully emotive shifting pulse and time whilst weaving folk-like melodies between horns, vibes and keys. These compositions are timeless. They stretch your imagination, pushing and pulling you with unpredictable emotions and dynamics. They are distinctly Norwegian yet expressively international. This music stems from a jazz tradition, yet is profoundly classical in its make up. Part travelogue in sound, part imaginary film soundtrack…just great music. Return to Mind clearly demonstrates Eyolf Dale ability as a highly accomplished piano player and a skilled composer and showcases the mature lyrical introspection that we often associate with Norwegian jazz, but equally, the explorative curiosity and restless free elements that are emerging as a hallmark of the younger Nordic improvisers.

“Distant Song” (subtitled as “Fred Farell sings the music of Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach”) is a contemporary jazz album consisting of jazz infused with gospel messaging. Featuring jazz singer Fred Farell, this album provides listeners with a compilation of easy-listening. Farell’s passion can be heard in tracks like Sunday Song, Places, and Forgotten Fantasie.

As a featured soloist and ensemble singer, Fred Farell has made a name for himself as a preeminent pro jazz voice. Across five decades and at venues as esteemed and diverse as Avery Fisher Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Museum of Modern Art, Farell has demonstrated inspired interpretive abilities to go with his heartfelt lyricism and sweet pipes. Distant Song, his debut for Whaling City Sound, a home for much quality jazz, is a profound experience, thanks partly due to his composers and loyal accompanists saxophonist Dave Liebman and piano/keys player Richie Beirach, both of whom have collaborated on the original music for this record. Farell own wordsmithing is sublime, requiring deftness, patience and passion on the microphone. His compositions unfold gently, religiously. Infused with sacred messaging, Distant Song is an emotional project art, jazz, part spiritual, part loving experiment, produced with happiness and love by a veteran talent clearly confident and at peace with himself and his abilities.

Formed in 1972 by Swiss jazz giants pianist George Gruntz, alto saxophonist Flavio Ambrosetti, his son, trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti, and drummer Daniel Humair, The Band would later metamorphose into the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band. The predilection towards a combination of international jazz all-stars and home-grown compositions is already in evidence on this, their first album, and a bevy of jazz greats are along for the ride.

The complex contrapuntal Our Suite Dig features brilliant solos by trumpeter Franco and father Flavio on alto before settling down into a loping ¾ that moves back into a riveting 4/4 and a taste of ensemble freedom. The samba feel of Pistrophallobus has US trumpeter Virgil Jones’ hot solo followed by a hard-swinging Eddie Daniels on tenor and father Flavio on soprano, with drummer Humair escorting the band back to the theme. Witch Switch fuses jazz and funk, with soulful solos by Gruntz, alto icon Phil Woods, trumpet star Dusco Goykovich, trombonist Jiggs Whigham, and Humair. The beautiful English Waltz features trumpet greats, Woody Shaw and Benny Bailey, and on the fanciful The Tango, Bailey switches to flugelhorn followed by bass trombone, bowed bass, and some collective shenanigans. With its Mingus-like symphonic sound Gravenstein is a vehicle for Wood’s alto magic, while Saint Charity has a ‘Freedom Jazz Dance’ feel, with Herb Geller on soprano, Äke Persson’s boogaloo trombone solo, and Sahib Shihab’s muscular baritone. The Age of Prominence highlights solos that include two legendary Afro-American jazzmen – tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon and trumpeter Woody Shaw. An exceptional double-album both for its compositions, arrangements and the masterful improvisation; but don’t take my word for it: take a listen.

Mention Grady Tate’s name to most bop lovers, and his excellent drumming is the thing that immediately pops into their minds. His singing isn’t the first thing they think of, which is regrettable because he really is a fine singer. One of the impressive vocal albums he did was Windmills of My Mind, a jazz/R&B release recorded when he was 36.

This album underscores the fact that Tate was never a radical or abstract type of singer; the smooth, elegant crooner heard on “And I Love Her,” “The Windmills of Your Mind” and “A Little at a Time” has a lot more in common with Johnny Hartman, Arthur Prysock and even Johnny Mathis (up to a point) than hardcore beboppers like Jon Hendricks, Babs Gonzales and Eddie Jefferson. Although Tate’s backing group includes pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Bob Cranshaw, much of Windmills isn’t jazz – “Don’t Fence Me In” and “Would You Believe,” in fact, are pure ’60s soul music. One of the best tunes on the album is “Work Song,” a riveting account of life on a chain gang. The disappointing thing about the CD reissue of Windmills isn’t the material, but the sound quality. An abundance of pops, clicks and crackling make the CD sound like a vinyl LP that’s been played too often – one would expect an audiophile label like DCC Compact Classics to do a much better job of digitally remastering a 1968 recording. Nonetheless, this is an album that both jazz and R&B enthusiasts should hear.

“Keely Smith Sings the John Lennon-Paul McCartney Songbook” is an album by the American singer Keely Smith of music written by the songwriting partnership of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The initial Billboard magazine review from November 14, 1964 commented that Smith’s “distinct handling of the especially arranged tunes makes her come through with flying colors…Lennon and McCartney will love her for this”. The album was successful in the United Kingdom.

Avoiding what could have been a cheap cash-in on youth culture and the rising influence of rock on popular music, Keely Smith instead delivered a gorgeously rendered, swinging, and utterly purehearted celebration of the Beatles on 1964’s Keely Smith Sings the John Lennon-Paul McCartney Songbook. Deftly eschewing the use of the Beatles name in the album title, Smith instead chose to focus on the songwriting talents of Lennon and McCartney. The result was an album that smartly recontextualized the band’s songs within the pantheon of traditional pop and the canon of standards that grew out of the work of the Great American Songbook composers. Separated from the British Invasion hype (and crying fans), the Beatles were the one rock band that both teenagers and their parents could agree upon – a contemporary rock act who still wrote lyrical love songs with standard AABA forms that didn’t sound too far removed from the pop of the the big-band era. At least, that’s what Smith would seem to want you to believe here. Working with producer Jimmy Bowen and arrangers Ernie Freeman and Benny Carter, and backed at various times by a big band and string orchestra, Smith dives headlong into the process, soaring with a smile through a bossa nova-tinged take on “If I Fell” and drawing upon mentor Frank Sinatra’s laid-back style on her swinging reading of “Please Please Me.” Elsewhere, she brings out subtleties in the original material that the Beatles merely hinted at, including turning the first part of “World Without Love” into a slow, dramatic verse like a Broadway intro. Similarly thrilling is hearing how Smith and her collaborators have mapped some of Lennon and McCartney’s songs to other contemporaries, including drawing upon Ray Charles’ piano-driven soulfulness on “This Girl” and evoking Peggy Lee’s smoky, finger-snapping “Fever” on “A Hard Day’s Night.” Admittedly, not every Beatles song works as well in this context, and cuts like “She Loves You” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” while pleasant as light period background pop, suffer from schmaltzy string and backing vocal additions, while conversely pointing out the limits of Lennon and McCartney’s repeated chorus lyrics. Nonetheless, by unabashedly embracing the Beatles’ songs at a time when most of her peers were decrying the state of popular music, Smith managed to deliver an album that both lionized Lennon and McCartney (a fact that put her on the right side of pop history) and retained all of the urbane, swinging musicality she was known for.

Kukuruz began their partnership with Julius Eastman and his musical works in 2014. In 2017, their performance at ‘documenta 14’ in the Megaro Mousikis concert hall in Athens earned a standing ovation. They performed works by Julius Eastman: ‘Evil Nigger’, ‘Gay Guerrilla’, ‘Buddha’ and ‘Fugue No. 7.’ The recording of these compositions followed in November 2017 on four Steinway D pianos in the main hall of the historic Radiostudio Zürich. Composer, trombonist and scholar George E. Lewis, who knew Eastman personally and played with him, writes in the liner notes: “This brilliant recording by the Kukuruz Quartet constitutes an important new contribution to the growing corpus of performances of music by the composer, pianist, and singer Julius Eastman (1940-1990), who came to prominence in the experimental music scene of the 1970s and 1980s … On this recording, the Kukuruz Quartet renders Eastman’s spirit of adventure audible and sensuous, exemplifying a new, creolized formation of contemporary classical music that is able to embrace a multicultural, multi-ethnic usable past and thinkable future that can affirm our common humanity in the pursuit of new music.“

Alto Summit features four post Charlie Parker saxophone greats. Lee Konitz has been a major force in bop, cool jazz, and the Avant-garde. Pony Poindexter’s play has a more bluesy feel; he recorded with everyone from Parker to Lambert Hendricks and Ross. Named top alto saxophonist in some 30 Downbeat polls Phil Woods, was best known for his own bands, whose recordings won four Grammys, while Leo Wright is known for his work with Dizzy Gillespie, and the likes of Nat Adderley and Kenny Drew. The four are backed by an ace rhythm section including pianist Steve Kuhn, of John Coltrane fame. On the bluesy Native Land, Wright shouts out the theme. Solo order is Lee, Phil, Pony, and then Lee. There’s lots of soul on the medley of classic ballads, as Leo takes on the first piece, then Pony, Phil, and last, Lee; it ends in a stunning group improv. With its modernist theme, Prompt is a showstopper, with Leo, Pony, Lee, and then Phil upstaging each other. The Perils of Poda strikes out with a piano solo before Phil, Lee, Pony, and then Leo take over. Pony’s funky Good Booty features Pony and Phil, while Lee-o’s Blues has Leo and Lee taking a leisurely walk on the soulful side. Lee’s Tribute to Bach and Bird combines a Bach chorale cantata with a Charlie Parker solo and features both duo and collective alto play. Four alto masters combine their distinctive styles in a jazz tour de force.

„This unusual album teams together the altos of Lee Konitz, Pony Poindexter, Phil Woods and Leo Wright (along with pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Jon Christensen) on a variety of challenging material. There are four pieces for the full septet (including one that pays tribute to both Bach and Bird), a pair of quintet performances and a ballad medley that ends in a complete fiasco (it has to be heard to be believed). Despite the latter, everyone fares well on this summit meeting.“ (Scott Yanow, AMG)

UP! is an unprecedented piece of work in the history of Polish jazz – Marek Napiórkowski’s dreams came true, realized on a huge scale, an effect of his search for artistic and life’s truths, declaration of a grown up man who doesn’t wish to look back. The album has been well acclaimed by critics, audience, as well as the music industry, the effect of which was a nomination for the prestigious FRYDERYK Prize in Jazz Album Of The Year category.

Although this is only his fourth album as a leader, Polish guitarist / composer Marek Napiorkowski is one of the most recorded artists on the local scene, being probably the most in-demand session guitarist since many years, which resulted in him taking part in over 140 different albums so far. He played and recorded with many world famous musicians and literally with everybody who is anybody on the local Polish scene; people like Tomasz Stanko and Anna Maria Jopek, to mention just two extremely different environments, which emphasize his legendary diversity and chameleonic ability to suit every musical milieu.

This is by far his most ambitious project so far, which involves eight of his original compositions arranged for a Jazz ensemble and a nine-piece chamber ensemble. The Jazz players are saxophonist Adam Pieronczyk, bass clarinet player Henryk Miskiewicz, pianist Krzysztof Herdzin, bassist Robert Kubiszyn and American drummer Clarence Penn. Herdzin was also the man in charge of the arrangements, orchestration and conducting the chamber ensemble, turning him in many respects into the most significant contributor to this album alongside Napiorkowski. The result is a sophisticated Jazz-Classical Fusion, based on solid melodies and featuring many excellent guitar solos, which floats between energetic up-tempo moods and gentle melancholic themes. Although the individual tunes are not related per se, the overall ambience and atmosphere of the album turns it into a kind of orchestral suite for chamber orchestra and Jazz soloists. The guitar work on this album, both in the acoustic and the electric tonalities, is simply brilliant and for me the best ever achieved by Napiorkowski. Rather than trying to prove his ability as a player, which is already established anyway, Napiorkowski really concentrates on playing music, the essence that so often tends to be forgotten in favor of flashy emptiness. Herdzin, the Polish musical Wizard of Oz, once again manages to sprinkle his magic all over this music, both as a pianist and of course as the man behind the ornamentation, which makes this music spark and sizzle. Luckily he found the way of balancing the basic Jazz contents and the chamber enhancements, keeping them both intact and coexisting alongside each other rather than mixing them into an undistinguishable mesh, which happens, unfortunately, way to often in such situations. Herdzin is probably the only person on the local scene who can pull this off.

Between 1990 and 2000, Marjolaine Reymond participates in many creations and sings the contemporary repertoire which gives her a certain freedom of interpretation. At the same time, she continues to work as an electroacoustic composer at Radio France and receives numerous prizes and state commissions. However, she remains dissatisfied with the compartmentalization of her artistic activities and the monolithic place occupied by the singer-songwriter in the music system. Marjolaine Reymond understands that she is not a repertoire singer, nor dedicated to formal composition, but above all a creator and improviser of her own universe. “Demeter No Access” is a polyptych in which various literary allusions are unofficially telescoped. A medieval manuscript (The Bestiary), Ovid’s famous Latin epic Latin poem (The Metamorphoses), Homer’s ancient Greek epic (The Odyssey), and the second book of the Old Testament Bible (Exodus).

Born and partly raised in Uganda, Mark Kavuma is a prominent young Trumpet player on the British jazz scene. Leading his own Quartet, the ‘Floor Rippers’ house band and his main outfit ‘The Banger Factory’. As well as, playing with Jean Toussaint’s Young Lions, Jazz Jamaica, Nu Civilisation Orchestra and also one of the brass leaders at London based carnival band Kinetika Bloco. “Kavuma” is his debut album which was released this summer.

Mark Kavuma may not be well-known yet but, still in his early twenties, he’s making waves on the British jazz scene. An alumnus of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, he’s already played two gigs as a guest soloist with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, at London’s Barbican Centre, on February 20, 2016. Kavuma’s compositions are clearly influenced by classic Blue Note albums of the 1950s and 60s, evoking such paragons of hard bop as Art Blakey, Lee Morgan and Horace Silver. Typical of this dynamic approach is the opener “Into The Darkness” with Kavuma evincing a solo of fluid confidence. Another is the equally vibrant “Papa Joe,” the ensemble stating the bouncy, memorable head. An exception to this mood is “Barbar G,” a gentle ballad, rich in soulful elegance. Two non-original numbers are included on the album. William Henry Monk’s hymn “Abide With Me” is introduced by Kyle Poole’s energetic drum solo before a rather more traditional ensemble reading of the tune. There’s also a version of the pop song “Carolina Moon” by Joe Burke and Benny Davis, and recorded by Connie Francis in 1958 but here given a reworking of the Thelonius Monk arrangement. Kavuma plays a searing trumpet solo on the bluesy “Modibo,” preceded by a Grant Green-esque guitar solo by Artie Zaitz. The set concludes with the fast-paced, uproarious “Church,” named after an East London late-night weekly gig for jazzers. The number is embellished by a delightful tap-dance break from Michela Marino Lerman. Judging by the occasional (muffled) cries of approbation and encouragement from the musicians, picked-up off-mic, everyone had a ball recording Kavuma’s debut album and it’s another indication that this talented young trumpeter is someone to watch out for because he’s going to be big.

Trombonist Michael Dease delivers a unifying message about the Jazz diaspora and the impassioned assistance of “All These Hands”. The program’s message is carefully constructed to provide listeners with a musical narrative about the evolution of the jazz art form as it spread through the different regions and localities of America. To provide assistance in bringing his vision to fruition, Dease assembled an all-star lineup of musicians including trumpeter Etienne Charles, alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Gerald Cannon, and powerhouse drummer Lewis Nash, along with a number of special guests like Rodney Whitaker, Randy Napoleon and Rufus Reid. With a thoughtful program of original compositions and an uplifting message of inclusivity, “All These Hands” remains insightfully straight forward, steadily swinging, and refreshingly melodic enough to evoke a wide assortment of bright moments to discerning jazz fans everywhere.

Trombonist, Michael Dease is a mainstay in Wynton Marsalis s Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra/Museum/Educa- tional Empire. His newest album, All These Hands, reflects the Lincoln Center mission: it is a journey through the early history of jazz, with compositions dedicated to the major American cities that helped the music flourish. While the concept could come across as gimmicky, the execution is thorough and the players are swinging. Sometimes, the album s theme comes across strong and direct, like on the opener, a grooving number named for the Creole Country of Louisiana. Dease s prodigious trom- bone technique is in full force here (it is throughout the al- bum, to punishing effect), and the rhythm section includ- ing veteran drummer Lewis Nash pulls it off with aplomb. Other pieces, like the slave tribute Gullah Ring Shout and the upbeat Memphis BBQ and Fish Fry, capture their subjects with unique instrumentations and lively improvisa- tions. But other pieces have less personality there is not much musical material linking the self-explanatory Down- town Chi-Town and D.C. tribute Chocolate City to their source material. Still, this is a fine sometimes great album of contemporary straight-ahead jazz, with fine playing from all involved. Special commendations go to elegant pianist Re- nee Rosnes and the tasteful guest-starring trumpeter Etienne Charles, who conjures a decent facsimile of Dizzy Gillespie on the bebop tribute Good and Terrible.

Gathering a hand picked bunch of all stars to make the trek with him as he brings his sound and vision to fruition, Dease and his bunch make a history of jazz recording that has no dust on it and sounds much more looking forward than looking backward. A dazzling set that’s striking in it’s ability to say something new here, this is more than a pleasingly swinging set that cooks. A solid work throughout, this is thoughtful jazz that doesn’t hesitate to cut to the chase and make it’s point. Exactly what the doctor ordered for that afternoon when you want to be alone with some jazz and let it roll. Killer stuff.

In 1970, three of Europe’s leading first-wave Avant-gardists united to form the New Jazz Trio. They personified the evolution of modern jazz into the realm of a freer more exploratory direction. German trumpeter Manfred Schoof felt at home with the exquisite simplicity of Mal Waldron as well as the cyclonic free play of Peter Brötzmann, maneuvered through the mainstream jazz currents of the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band and the outré experimentation of The Global Unity Orchestra. German bassist Peter Trunk and Dutch drummer Cees See were like musical freethinkers. Trunk, especially, was lauded by his peers. Guitarist Attila Zoller stated that he was “as good as any of the best American bassists”, and German jazz guru Joachim Ernst Berendt called Trunk “the best bassist in German jazz.” Unfortunately, Trunk died in 1973, but this and MPS companion album, Page Two, chronicle the trio’s seminal music.

With the addition of a string quintet, The New Jazz Trio’s ‘second page’ expands on their first MPS album, Page One, by ingeniously melding the heady experimentation of the classical Avant-garde with the exuberant spontaneity of free jazz. For Schoof, the overall musical interaction rather than the individual solos had precedence. He specified that, “on every track all musicians played spontaneously.” Yet soloistic passages weave in and out of a music that ranges from Ornette-like free jazz blanketed by the string section’s “white noise” in Currents, the pointillist Feathered Friends, the frenetic…And Accents, the Mysterioso Sunmoonata, the frenzied Ludus Totalus, a deliriously jazzy Dolbi, the otherworldly Open Zoo, the receptive free-for-all of Portraits, the pulsating insistence of Hommage, on through to the intense drive of Absolute. This was a daring album for its time, one that has maintained its sense of urgent relevancy for nearly a half century.

“Endless Forms Most Beautiful” is the eighth album by Finnish symphonic power metal band Nightwish. The album’s themes primarily inspired by the work of naturalist Charles Darwin. This is the band’s first featuring singer Floor Jansen and the first with Uilleann pipes player, Troy Donockley as a full-time member. It was also the first without drummer Jukka Nevalainen, who took a break from the band due to severe insomnia. Drumming was by Kai Hahto of Wintersun and Swallow the Sun. The album includes only five Nightwish members, despite its being their first album release as a sextet.

The eighth studio long-player from the audacious Finnish symphonic metal outfit, Endless Forms Most Beautiful is also the first Nightwish outing to feature new vocalist Floor Jansen (After Forever, Revamp), who joined the group on the road in 2012 after the mid-tour departure of Anette Olzen. Nightwish has endured numerous lineup changes throughout its nearly 20-year career, but the band’s sound has remained remarkably consistent, due in large part to the stabilizing presence of project founder and chief songwriter Tuomas Holopainen, whose overall vision for the band remains unchanged. Endless Forms Most Beautiful, like most Nightwish outings, is a concept album, though unlike 2011’s narrative-driven Imaginaerum, it’s a loosely conceptual affair that, according to Holopainen, celebrates the “beauty of life, the beauty of existence, nature, science.” The title is taken from Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, and the reliably opulent (full choir and live orchestra) inaugural cut, “Shudder Before the Beautiful,” opens appropriately with a spoken word intro from evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. It’s a truly majestic piece and an excellent showcase for Jansen, who brings both gravitas and versatility to the table. Whether it’s lilting Celtic folk-rock (“Élan”), Enya-esque fantasy-pop (“The Eyes of Sharbat Gula”), or straight-up, anthemic power metal (“My Walden”), she never overplays her hand, but she also never gets lost in the mix, which is impressive considering the swirling cacophony of sound cooked up by Holopainen and crew. Overall, Endless Forms Most Beautiful succeeds despite its strict adherence to the Nightwish formula. It’s a well-oiled machine firing on all cylinders, both expansive and familiar, and it’s arguably the group’s most immediate-sounding record in years.

Canadian vocal jazz & pop sensation Nikki Yanofsky is back with her sophomore release „Little Secret“. Executive Produced by legend Quincy Jones, Little Secret combines pop-song structures with sophisticated harmonies, club-ready beats with punchy big-band horns, and earworm hooks with scat-singing solos. It’s all held together by her powerful delivery, as well as a newfound sass.

With Little Secret, Nikki has drawn on the impeccable taste and crossover wisdom of the album’s Executive Producer and her co-manager Quincy Jones, who has been bridging gaps between jazz and pop since the ‘60s. She had brought jazz into a pop context before, performing with Hancock in 2011 for the MusiCares Person of the Year tribute to Barbra Streisand, and singing at a Los Angeles tribute to Carole King with a big band conducted by Jones himself.

“For many years now, it has been both my dream and my goal to inspire young people to recognize and appreciate jazz and blues,” said Jones. “Nikki Yanofsky is a leading voice in a generation of young artists who are bringing the quality of music back up. Little Secret is the result of years of hard work, and her stab at bringing her influences to her own generation. I’m proud to be her Executive Producer and excited for the world to hear this album.”
