Jerry Vale’s beautiful high-tenor voice graced many of the most enchanting pop songs of the ’50s and ’60s, including a parade of Italian-American favorites like “Innamorata (Sweetheart),” “Volare,” “Amore, Scusami,” and his signature song, “Al Di La.” Vale, born Genaro Louis Vitaliano in 1932, learned the Italian repertoire from an early age; his mother often sang around the house and trotted out the old songs at extended-family gatherings. While shining shoes at a local barber shop at the age of 11, young Vitaliano began singing popular songs for customers while he worked. He was soon sent to a vocal coach, where he learned piano as well as voice. Over the course of just four years, he’d progressed from school productions to paying gigs to residencies at supper clubs around New York City.

Jim James – Uniform Distortion (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 40:07 minutes | 450 MB | Genre: Indie Rock

The GRAMMY Award-nominated frontman of My Morning Jacket, Jim James, has announced the release of his third studio album, Uniform Distortion. Uniform Distortion was produced by Jim James and Kevin Ratterman at Louisville, KY’s La La Land, with Ratterman also serving as recording engineer. All songs were written by James, who is backed on the album by bassist Seth Kauffman (Floating Action) and longtime touring drummer Dave Givan, with backing vocals provided throughout by Dear Lemon Trees’ Leslie Stevens, Jamie Drake and Kathleen Grace. “The name of my new record is Uniform Distortion because I feel like there is this blanket distortion on society/media and the way we gather our ‘news and important information. More and more of us are feeling lost and looking for new ways out of this distortion and back to the truth…and finding hope in places like the desert where I write this now…finding hope in the land and in the water and in old books offering new ideas and most importantly in each other and love.” says James.

The leader of My Morning Jacket has found new inspiration for his third album. A picture of Duane Michals titled Illuminated Man, found in a 1971 edition of The Last Whole Earth Catalog and which is featured on the cover of Uniform Distortion, is the spark in James’ creative thrust. The Louisville songwriter goes wild on a rock’n’roll overflowing with fuzz, plays around with various atmospheres and many distortions. A wailing voice at times, or more distant like an echo, for a rather timeless album in the vein of Neil Young’s work. On Just A Fool and You Get To Rome, Jim James plays with very rock’n’roll and raw guitar riffs, and introduces Yes To Everything with a hoarse and hearty laugh. Indeed, despite his cynic nature, it’s a joyful atmosphere that the singer is trying to create here. He does not hesitate to resort to pop melodies, like on Throwback for instance. A way to contrast with the lyrics dedicated to lost love and James’ toxic experiences with social networks. There is a certain timelessness throughout Uniform Distortion, and the listener might feel they’re moving from one era to the next throughout the album. Too Good To Be True goes back to the eighties with a crooner’s slow. But Jim James uses a quirky tone to deal with potential disappointments. Everything is carefully crafted to give the illusion of simple titles that are in fact much richer and more layered than they appear.  – Clara Bismuth

What makes this album worth hearing is that Joe Purdy delivers all the songs with conviction, his arguments one would hope are persuasive or at the least would help some who hear them question their pre-programming and ingrained attitudes. One can hope, hoping is not yet a crime. And because of this Who Will be Next? sits in a tradition from Guthrie, Dylan and others, through Steve Earle up to today. Sits in that tradition, has its rightful place, is not shallow of intent but burns with conviction and a zeal for a better world. Sometimes songs should matter, sometimes they do matter. Joe Purdy matters.

Groovy, cheeky, vivid and deeply touching – on their debut album Marie-Josefin Melchior (violin, vocals) and Johann Zeller (accordion, vocals) present an amazing range of world music: Valse Musette, Tango, Czardas, Tradimix… everything gets a feast for the ears. This album includes classics such as Piazzolla’s “Adios Nonino” or the Berlin song “Nehm’n Sie ‘n Alten!” by Otto Reutter as well as numerous original compositions by Johann Zeller.

The two musicians, often melting into total unity, surprise their audience only seconds later with drumming a groovy beat on the accordion or with a colourful rainbow of violin sounds spanning a range from Arab Rabab to electric guitar. An album as vivid and soulful as life itself.

A pleasing vocalist with a warm delivery reminiscent of Andy Williams or Tony Bennett, John Gary unfortunately came along just at the beginning of the British Invasion and never managed to make much of an impression on the adult vocal audience. Born in 1932 in Watertown, New York, he was a singer on Don McNeill’s radio show Breakfast Club before signing a contract with RCA Records in 1962. Though only one single charted on the U.S. pop charts the Top 100 “Soon I’ll Wed My Love” in 1964 John Gary did reach the Top 20 with mid-’60s LPs such as The Nearness of You, Encore, and A Little Bit of Heaven, and fared even better on the easy listening charts (with albums including the number one Cold) and Cash Box, where Gary albums hit the Top Ten twice. He also covered a wide repertoire for the time, from show tunes to country hits and romantic ballads though, remarkably, very few of the novelty pop songs which dragged down fellow vocalists.

On June 12, 1981, America met Indiana Jones when George Lucas and Steven Spielberg brought Raiders of the Lost Ark to theaters. If George Lucas were to say that he could make terrific entertainment out of Chairman Mao’s Little Red Book, at this point I’d be inclined to believe him – this point being just a few hours after seeing his Raiders of the Lost Ark. And if he wanted to bring along Steven Spielberg to direct, I’d believe him even more.

Koryn Hawthorne is on a mission to move people with her music, and the 20-year old chart-topper has continued to garner acclaim as a young superstar on the rise. First wowing international audiences as a finalist on NBC’s The Voice, the genre-crossing sounds and powerful anthems on her EP provided just a tasted of Koryn’s explosive abilities as an artist, full of contagiously uplifting songs that provide the jolt of energy and intensity the world has been waiting for, with Koryn to release a new full-length album later this summer. With accolades from industry heavy-hitters and 2 nominations at the recent 2018 Stellar Awards for Contemporary Female Vocalist of the Year and New Artist of the Year, Koryn also performed on the Stellar Awards from the first time, making a splash on the stage performing “Won’t He Do It.” Her empowering anthem “Warriors” was featured in a campaign late last Fall for the National Women’s Soccer League 2017 playoffs. In addition to her performace on the Stellar Awards, Koryn also debuted “Won’t He Do It” on the OWN hit show Greenleaf, where she performed the song in an appearance on Season 2. “Won’t He Do It” was also the featured single on the NAACP Image Award and Stellar Award-winning soundtrack for the show, Greenleaf Soundtrack: Volume 2. Keep an eye on Koryn for a return appearance on Greenleaf Season 3. FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 55:34 minutes | 612 MB | Genre: Pop
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Parlophone UK

The album features sixteen tracks, all radically reworked, spanning Kylie’s incredible 25 year career. The album was recorded in London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios with Kylie’s band and a full orchestra. Nick Cave re-recorded his vocal on the famous duet, “Where The Wild Roses Grow”, especially for the album. Other highlights of the album include a wonderfully poignant “Better The Devil You Know”, the ever-amazing “Confide In Me”, a sultry “On A Night Like This”, a joyous “All The Lovers”, the beautiful “Finer Feelings” and a version of “The Locomotion” which swaggers with true 1950’s panache.

Over all 16 tracks one thing becomes very clear – stripped of her high end pop production, the emotional resonance of many of Kylie’s songs has never been clearer, nor has her voice ever sounded better.

During her 25-year career in the music biz, Kylie Minogue’s ability to re-invent herself and stay current is rivaled only by Madonna’s. Unlike her American counterpart, though, Kylie’s changes never seem desperate, and everything she does exudes a touch of class that makes her shifts seem far more organic. From chirpy teen popper to indie diva to dance-pop heavyweight, every step she’s taken has made perfect sense and in the process, she’s released some of the best pop records of her era. In 2012, as part of her own look back at the highlights of a long and successful career, Kylie and her band went to Abbey Road studios to run through a selection of her biggest hits and best songs. Joined by an array of backing singers and an orchestra, the songs are re-imagined in ways that bring out the underlying emotions behind the glittery pop facades. Stripping the songs down to their basics and then adding strings on top proves to be very effective, especially on “All the Lovers” or “Hand on Your Heart,” and most of the new arrangements are imaginative and sometime inspired. The piano ballad version of “Better the Devil You Know” works very well, as does the sultry trip-hop take on “Slow,” while the strings and vocals on “I Should Be So Lucky” turn the song into a classy ’30s musical showstopper. The most interesting reboot takes place on “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” where the insistent strings push the song along with a tightly coiled electricity that is impossible to resist. The only song that really falls flat is the cutesy, Motown-inspired take on “The Locomotion.” Though Kylie may not have the strongest voice around, she has more than enough charm and understated emotional strength to fill the more intimate arrangements with a solid and exceedingly warm center. The album stands as both as a reminder of all the classic pop songs Kylie has released and of her fearless nature. She’s always been willing to take risks, and despite the initial thought that her music may not stand up to the orchestral treatment, The Abbey Road Sessions is another victory in a career full of them.

Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes – Live at the Greek (2000/2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:51:04 minutes | 2,38 GB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Classicberry & The Black Crowes Partnership

The Black Crowes were dogged with comparisons to the Rolling Stones and the Faces throughout the first decade of their career, so it came as a mild surprise that they teamed with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page in late 1999 for a couple of concerts. Zeppelin had a mystique and majesty about them that the Crowes never attempted to emulate. They were an earthy, bluesy rock band and while they found a number of different ways to rework their influences, they never tried the stately grandeur that was Zeppelin’s second nature. So, some observers were curious to see how these two approaches worked. Well, it worked very, very well indeed. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise that it was a good, comfortable fit since Page always demonstrated a true love of blues and early rock & roll, even on Led Zep’s heaviest moments. What may be a surprise, at least to listeners that always dismissed the Black Crowes as revivalist hacks, is how supple and muscular the band sounds on Live at the Greek and how powerful vocalist Chris Robinson is. The double-disc album, released originally only through the internet but then through retail on TVT, essentially replicates an entire concert from Page and the Crowes, one of the first before they set out on a full-length American tour in the summer of 2000. They stick to Led Zeppelin classics and old blues and R&B standards like “Woke up This Morning,” “Sloppy Drunk,” “Mellow Down Easy,” and “Shake Your Money Maker,” plus the Yardbirds’ “Shape of Things to Come” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well.” No Crowes songs are here due to contractual reasons – the band left American/Columbia in 1999, and they were not allowed to recut any song they released on the label in the years immediately following their departure; but in a way, that only strengthens the album. By pounding out hard-driving blues-rock and classic Zeppelin tunes, the band is able to stretch out and reveal just what a capable, versatile band they are. The true sign of their abilities is that Page sounds looser and happier here than he has in years; he sounds like he’s truly enjoying himself, a quality that is debatable on the Page & Plant records, no matter what their virtues are. Live at the Greek isn’t a landmark release, and only hardcore Page, Black Crowes, and Zeppelin fans are likely to want this, no matter how vibrant and lucent these faithful interpretations are. But for those fans, they’ll be quite pleased with how good, how strong Live at the Greek is. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

What if John Coltrane’s Atlantic period was really his most exciting? After his great years under the Prestige and Blue Note banners, and before his fulminating recordings for Impulse!, the saxophonist would work for Ahmet Ertegun’s firm between 1959 and 1961. There, he would record four essential records which are held by some to be the quintessence of Coltrane’s art: Giant Steps (his first album made up exclusively of his own compositions) in 1960, Coltrane Jazz (his first collaboration with pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones), My Favorite Things and Ol Coltrane(with Eric Dolphy), all three released in 1961. Although he was no longer signed with Atlantic, he would nevertheless release The Avant-Garde (where he was co-leader with Don Cherry), Coltrane Plays The Blues and Coltrane’s Sound. Nine numbers from this golden age have been selected for Trane: The Atlantic Collection. Remastered and available in Hi-Res 24-bit quality, for sure they represent 46 minutes of total genius, but it is difficult and frustrating to find oneself limited to this short selection, when the rest of albums count among the most essential pages in the history of jazz. With these records, the uniqueness of Coltrane finally breaks out into broad daylight. His style, which was unique at the time – technically and harmonically – literally moulded the canons of bop and proposed a totally different road to that being taken at the time by Miles Davis with Kind Of Blue, his angular brick of modal jazz. Upon its release, a large part of the jazzosphere was more than shocked by the complexity of the creations of Coltrane and his collaborators. Today, all the music presented in Trane: The Atlantic Collection has naturally passed into the pages of history. And re-listening to it, in the fine style in which it’s presented here, is an essential service that should be provided free to all on the NHS…

A fixture on the Grand Ole Opry, singer/songwriter Justin Tubb, the eldest son of the legendary Ernest Tubb, had a style all his own; but for one duet version of “Blue Eyed Elaine” on Ernest’s 1979 album The Legend and the Legacy, he always recorded independently of his famous father.

Justin was born in San Antonio, Texas and spent most of his life in the Lone Star State with his mother Elaine, who separated from Ernest in 1948. He got his professional start in local clubs during college, and eventually moved to Nashville. At his father’s suggestion, Tubb got a job working as a DJ in Gallatin, Tennessee, where he occasionally performed some of the songs he had written, and made his recording debut in 1953 with “Ooh-La-La.” Throughout the 1950s, Tubb recorded steadily, but had only moderate success with his solo efforts. He did a little better singing novelty duets with Goldie Hill; in 1954, they reached the Top Five with their version of Jim Ed and Maxine Brown’s “Looking Back to See,” followed by the Top 15 “Sure Fire Kisses.” In 1955 he joined the Opry, and in 1956 he had his first solo success with the Top Ten hit “I Gotta Go Get My Baby.”

Tubb signed to Starday in the early ’60s, released a few albums, and toured so much that he was temporarily dropped from the Opry for not appearing often enough. After 1963, he signed with RCA and released two duets with Lorene Mann, including “We’ve Gone Too Far Again.” He had one more minor hit with “But Wait There’s More,” his last chart appearance. He continued to record, tour, and appear on the Opry through the ’70s. He also continued to write songs, and his “Lonesome 7-7203” was a number one hit for Hawkshaw Hawkins, while “Be Glad” became a major hit for Del Reeves. Additionally, his “What’s Wrong with the Way We’re Doing It Now” became a popular song with fans of the traditional country sound. Tubb also wrote and recorded songs paying tribute to his father, including “Thanks, Troubadour, Thanks” and “Just You and Me, Daddy.” He died January 24, 1998. ~ Sandra Brennan

This 19-CD set assembles all the extant recordings he conducted for EMI (notably its German Electrola label) over the period 1935 to 1949 in Dresden, Berlin, Vienna and London includes a number of rarities and the world premiere release of a version of Mozart’s Serenata notturna recorded in Vienna in 1947. It was during these years that Bhm cemented his reputation as a major conductor of Austro-German repertoire. Collectors will also be pleased to know that this set contains all the recordings that featured in the now-iconic series of Dresden-themed LP boxes released by EMI to mark Bhm’s 85th birthday in 1979.

There are magnificent performances here, especially of Wagner (Act III of Die Meistersinger is particularly wonderful). It’s fascinating, too, to hear how different, and more characterful, the Vienna Philharmonic sounded in the 1930s and 1940s. – The Times, 8th December 2017

Laurent Coulondre doesn’t just play keyboards, he merges with them. The young Frenchman says that he immerses himself totally into the “deep world” of his keyboards. This world can sometimes resemble an Escher-like maze: just when you think you’ve found the way out, you find yourself somewhere else. Coulondre’s music is funky and would not be out of place on Miles Davis’ On The Corner — yet it never sounds dated — if only because of the youthful energy of his playing. Coulondre’s whole body swings with the music as he loses himself in thrilling solos. In his homeland he is a popular sideman and he has played on the albums of trumpeter Nicolas Folmer and others. Coulondre’s latest album Gravity Zero was released this year. On it you can hear the exuberance that he will undoubtedly bring to the stage at the North Sea Jazz Festival.

These are top-notch performances of not always top-notch music. The piano quintets of Mozart and Beethoven need no special pleading, and this international ensemble are at their best in the dreamy opening and the finale’s cadenza of the Mozart. The French timbre characterised by Franois Leleux’s plangent oboe sounds well suited to Poulenc’s racy sextet and the fine one-movement Divertissement by Roussel. More dispensable are Louise Farrenc’s amiable sextet, a pioneering work of 1852, and Andr Caplet’s oddly irritating quintet of 1899. The third disc has a sextet by Strauss’s friend Ludwig Thuille, boldly symphonic in scope, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s extremely enjoyable, bubbly quintet. But are eight piano-and-wind works in succession just too much of a good thing?

Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie (also referred to as simply Buckingham McVie) is a studio album by Fleetwood Mac vocalists Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, released on June 9, 2017. Four of the five members of Fleetwood Mac are featured on the album; vocalist Stevie Nicks is the sole member absent from the album. The album sold over 22,000 units in the US in its first week and debuted within the top 20. It proved to be even more successful in the UK, where it debuted within the top 5. In November 2017, the album was also certified silver with sales exceeding 60,000 units.

Christine McVie rejoined Fleetwood Mac in 2013 after a 16-year absence. In the aftermath, the classic Rumours quintet — McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood — were readying the ground to record for the first time since 1987. Nicks, however, despite public affirmations that she was on board, bailed to pursue her solo work, creating the kind of melodrama that has made Fleetwood Mac one of pop’s most dysfunctional outfits. Buckingham and McVie had already written songs for the band project — together and separately — and decided to complete the record anyway with the rhythm section. Four-fifths of Fleetwood Mac albums have appeared before to very mixed results. While this set falls prey to that a bit given Nicks’ absence, the end result remains quite positive and, with more time, this version of the band could continue with great success.

The set commences with three absolute knockouts. Buckingham’s opener “Sleeping Around the Corner” first appeared as a bonus track on his Seeds We Sow, but this rework is better; it’s steeped in the melodic signature he’s so effectively employed with Fleetwood Mac as traces of early rock harmonies are wed to slightly wonky rhythm and keyboard charts, joined to a killer new bridge and refrain. It’s followed by “Feel About You,” one of the pair’s three co-writes. Framed by a marimba and John McVie’s bassline, its Caribbean flavor is offset by a doo wop-esque lyric line behind Christine’s breezy vocal — that still offers more than a hint of ache in its grain. Buckingham’s “In My World” combines Tusk’s production flare with the breathy call-and-response vocal moans from Tango in the Night’s “Big Love.” The glorious sun-kissed pop of McVie’s “Red Sun” is gorgeously crafted. It contains a stacked vocal hook that makes us forget about Nicks altogether. Buckingham’s “Love Is Here to Stay” sounds more like something off one of his solo albums, but it’s a gorgeous song and the interplay of voices in the backdrop embraces the whole band. The jointly composed “Too Far Gone” is a funky, love-it-or-hate-it track. Its big funky riff stands at odds with McVie’s vocal. But more than this, it contains Buckingham’s maddening trademark production excess that employs big tribal drum breakdowns that disrupt everything. Likewise, McVie’s “Game of Pretend” is a syrupy and uncharacteristically clumsy ballad that drags on far longer than it should and feels like filler. Her closer, “Carnival Begins,” is far more successful. It’s mercurial, dreamy, and actually recalls the Bob Welch-era Fleetwood Mac that delivered “Mystified.” Buckingham’s screaming guitar break at the end, however, reconciles it to the band’s current sonic sphere. While Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie isn’t perfect — and it was smart not to bill this effort as a Fleetwood Mac record — it’s far better than expected, and indeed, they should have made it happen long ago. While you can never tell what might happen with this crew, one can only hope that this pair teams up again soon.

The Faust Symphony undoubtedly constitutes one of the principal works of Liszt’s Weimar period,if not indeed his orchestral masterpiece. Liszt had become acquainted with Goethe’s poem Faust in 1830, in the French translation of Grard de Nerval. He began composing the work in the 1840s, after a visit to the Goethe House in Weimar. Its first performance was arranged for September 1857, to mark the centenary of Grand Duke Carl August and the erection of a statue to Goethe and Schiller. On this occasion Liszt rounded the work off by adding a tenor solo and chorus at the end. The premiere took place on 5 September. This musical transposition of the poem is performed here by Orchester Wiener Akademie under Martin Haselbck, and follows their recording of Liszt’s transcriptions of works by Schubert, released in 2015 (Alpha 471).In parallel with this, the Viennese period-instrument orchestra is also continuing its Resound Beethoven project, the recording of the complete symphonies at the venues of their first performances.

Apart from Franz Liszt’s innovative symphonic poems, such as Les Prludes and Mazeppa, A Faust Symphony in Three Character Sketches, S. 108 was his most important orchestral work, influencing composers from Richard Wagner to Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, and at well over an hour in duration, greatly expanding the possibilities of the hybrid form. Whereas many Romantic masterpieces have been rendered with historically informed practices, period readings of the Faust Symphony are rare, so Martin Haselbck’s authoritative original-instruments performance with the Vienna Academy Orchestra is a welcome addition to the all too modest catalog of recordings of the work. While the chamber size of the orchestra and rather lean sections tend to concentrate the ear on fine details, and make the Faust Symphony less imposing than more conventional symphony orchestra versions, the smaller ensemble is closer to what Liszt conducted in Weimar, where he premiered the Faust Symphony in 1857, and he would have prized the clarity of this group’s sonorities and responsive dynamics. Haselbck and his orchestra recorded Liszt’s other orchestral music for a series on NCA, though the Faust Symphony was not included there, so this 2017 Alpha Classics release fills the gap for collectors. Highly recommended.

The message folk songs that have become so important in popular music in recent months have been heralded for their timeliness. But everything in this album is not that simple, not that easily categorized–not when one really listens to the extraordinarily meaningful lyrics that are virtually always the thing.

Especially are things not so simple when one listens to the words written by Bob Dylan, the young front-runner of the message and/or protest folk song, folk rock, folk ‘n’ roll, anti-protest song, what-have-you. True, his words are as timely as today’s headlines, but, paradoxically, they are also timeless, frequently dealing with social-political ills we can exchange for those headlines but which also could be set down in many a generation and be topical.

Like all truly fine poets, Dylan writes not only for the moment but for all seasons. Take the two Dylan compositions found in this best-of-the-message-songs collection by the Living Voices, as arranged and conducted by Anita Kerr. There’s the package’s title piece, Positively 4th Street, plus Like a Rolling Stone–two of Dylan’s biggest. They sear but they are surprisingly subtle–paradoxes. Dylan is too clever to be blatant, so he clenches his fist, strikes out, but desists from name-calling. Positively 4th Street, on the surface, could by about anyone disappointed by his fellow men. Though our current concern over racial prejudice leaves little question about the intent behind such lines as “Don’t you understand, it’s not my problem” and “You got a lotta nerve, to say you gotta helping hand to lend. You just want to be on the side that’s winning.” Dylan stalks not only injustice but hypocrisy.

Likewise, Dylan’s Like a Rolling Stone couldn’t sound more contemporary, title-wise. But it’s really the age-old story of the fallen woman, all dressed up-or down-in message. It’s the tale of a great waste, of a gal who, like the cynic, knew the price of everything and the value of nothing…

his 12-CD set joins Warner Classics’ Icon series, which pays homage to some of the greatest recording artists of the recent past. The box is devoted to the French conductor Louis Frmaux, who, from 1969 to 1978, preceded Simon Rattle as Principal Conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. For the first time, it assembles all the recordings that Frmaux and the CBSO made for EMI. Over the course of the 1970s their discography played a substantial role in building the orchestra’s international reputation before the arrival of Rattle as its Principal Conductor in 1980. Indeed, such was the orchestra’s prowess in the French music favoured by Frmaux that, in 1978, Rattle described the CBSO as “the best French orchestra in the world”.

The vast majority of this Icon set is devoted to French music: Berlioz (notably the Grande Messe des Morts, the first recording project of the CBSO Chorus, which Frmaux established in 1973); Massenet; Bizet (including his rarely-heard symphonic suite Roma); Lalo; Saint-Sans (including the Symphony No 3, a work closely associated with Frmaux); Faur (the Requiem); Chabrier; Debussy; Dukas; Ravel; Ibert (whose music occupies almost an entire CD); Honegger; Poulenc (the Gloria, Piano Concerto and Les Biches) and Satie. The British-born composers featured are: Litolff; Walton (who occupies an entire CD, dominated by the two Faade suites), and John McCabe (1939-2015), whose Notturni was premiered by Frmaux and the CBSO in 1970.

Appearing for the first time on CD is a selection of arias by Leoncavallo, Puccini, Bizet, Sullivan, Lehr and Johann Strauss II, sung in English by the tenor by the Birmingham-born tenor David Hughes (1929-1972), who, before turning to opera, had enjoyed success as a popular singer; the arias are complemented by overtures by Offenbach. Other soloists appearing on the set include tenor Robert Tear, cellist Paul Tortelier and pianists John Ogdon and Cristina Ortiz.

There’s a lot of French music in this set: earthy readings of Poulenc’s Gloria and Les biches alongside a host of rarities…Walton’s Bach-inspired ballet The Wise Virgins is fun, and there’s an electrifying disc of music by the underrated pianist-composer John McCabe…An excellent set — 12 generously filled discs in an attractive slimline box. Essential. – The Arts Desk, 22nd July 2017

More than any of his contemporaries, vocalist Michael Bubl has bridged the gap between standards-oriented vocal pop and more contemporary pop vocals. Having perfected the mix on his superb 2003 effort, It’s Time, which found the Frank Sinatra-influenced singer covering both “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and Leon Russell’s R&B ballad “A Song for You,” Bubl wisely doesn’t mess with a good thing on 2007’s Call Me Irresponsible. Once again delving into a mix of swinging big-band numbers and classic pop hits such as the wickedly hip ’60s standard “Comin’ Home Baby” (featuring backing vocals from Boyz II Men), the album is a breezy, stylish good time. And while such cuts as “The Best Is Yet to Come” and the laid-back title track comfortably cast Bubl as a modern-day crooner consistent with his billing, the unexpected reworkings of contemporary pop songs often make the biggest impact. To these ends, his bossa nova duet with vocalist Ivan Lins on Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight” and the reharmonized Willie Nelson perennial “Always on My Mind” work particularly well here, not as cheeky cabaret but as artfully crafted and devastatingly moving ballads. And it’s not just the cover tunes that drive the album; on the contrary, much like the Bubl co-written ballad “Home” defined the mood of It’s Time, his sparkling melodic pop original “Everything” helps make Call Me Irresponsible a truly welcome pop album by any standard. This CD was nominated for a Grammy award in 2007 as Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, and “Everything” was nominated for Best Male Pop Performance.
