“Unique collaboration with Flamenco legend: After his success with album Aranjuez in 2010, Xavier de Maistre presents a new Spanish project including a cooperation with Flamenco legend and castanets soloist Lucero Tena.

The album features popular repertoire of Spanish Classical Music: including compositions of Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega and de Falla, arranged for harp and castanets. The album shows this music under a completely new light, by keeping the nostalgic and intoxicating Spanish roots.

Xavier de Maistre and Lucero Tena have established their instruments, harp & castanets, as solo instruments in concert halls which makes the project very special. The combination of their instruments is unique and no similar product is on the market.

Xavier and Lucero were introduced to each other by director Jesús López Cobos. Xavier de Maistre fell in love with Lucero’ story and personality. Shortly after, they decided to record a repertoire they had in common: Spanish Music.

The project has been recorded in one of the most beautiful halls in Paris, the Galerie Dorée at the Hotel de Toulouse, which has been featured in movies like “”Vatel”” and “”Marie Antoinette””.”

What fun this album is! True, today you can get all three Bartk piano concertos on a single disc, but these two performances from the mid-1960s, featuring the hot young talent of Peter Serkin and Seiji Ozawa, really deserve a home in the collection of anyone who cares about this music. With the Chicago Symphony in top form, the team blazes through the percussive First Concerto with take-no-prisoners gusto, especially in the finale. The Third Concerto, a more lyrical work to begin with, still sustains a remarkable degree of tension, and sounds as fresh as the day it was written. The central Andante religioso is completely captivating, the tempo perfectly chosen and Serkin finding poetry in just about every bar. The sonics are very clear, but also somewhat two-dimensional. Bartk’s interesting writing for low winds and percussion in the First Concerto is very well caught, but given the spotlight on the piano you’ll need to fiddle with the volume to find a comfortable listening level.” (David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday). Beth Hart is on fire. Right now, the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter is riding a creative tidal wave, firing out acclaimed albums, hooking up with the biggest names in music and rocking the house each night with that celebrated burnt-honey voice. In 2016, the headline news is Beth’s latest album, Fire On The Floor (out 14 October on Provogue/Mascot Label Group): a release that even this fiercely self-critical artist describes as “pretty frickin’ good”.

Fire On The Floor is sure to build on her breakneck momentum. As the singer explains, this latest record gave her an emotional release following the bitter-sweet sessions for Better Than Home. If there’s a theme that ties these twelve songs together, it’s a sense of escapism following the hardest of times. “We were still in the mixing stages for that album and I knew I had to make another record. Making Better Than Home was so painful, because one of the producers, Michael Stevens, was dying of cancer. It was a very emotional record to write and to make. I wanted the songs for Fire On The Floor to get born real quick.”

Take a spin of Fire On The Floor and you’ll see exactly why. These twelve new songs run the gamut of genre, reflecting Beth’s eclectic teenage influences, which took in everything from gospel, soul and classical to the seismic rock of Soundgarden. “As a writer,” she nods, “I feel really stifled if I’m trying to write in the same style. I just can’t do that. Growing up as a kid, I was raised all over the place stylistically, loving so many different genres.”

Fire On The Floor is the album that Beth Hart needed to make. Likewise, it’s a record that you need to hear. “I’m so pleased with it,” she concludes. “I recently had to organise the sequence of the record, and while I was doing that, I was thinking to myself, ‘Y’know, this is pretty frickin’ good…!’”

In March 2017, Warner Classics marks the 10th anniversary of Mstislav Rostropovich’s death and 90 years since his birth with the deluxe collectors’ box set Cellist of the Century, comprising of selected remastered recordings.

The label was given unprecedented access to Rostropovich’s personal archive and worked closely with his daughters Elena and Olga. The range and variety of music in the box set is nothing short of extraordinary, embracing works by more than 60 composers, from iconic recordings to rarities. A number of the live performances originate from Russian tapes saved from destruction by resourceful Soviet archivists when Rostropovich was exiled from the USSR (1974-1990), and which came back to light in the late 1990s. Another highlight is the complete Bach Cello Suites, presented here in both audio and video versions. The collection also features an exclusive audio interview of Rostropovich recorded by personality Jon Tolansky.

Although Rostropovich died 10 years ago, on 27 April 2007, he remains a powerful presence on the world’s cultural scene through his legacy as the greatest cellist of his time, as a brave advocate of human rights, and as a man of proverbial generosity and charisma.

Special care has been taken to ensure the highest quality of sound reproduction. Wherever possible, the engineers of Art et Son studios have refined the sound, always with scrupulous respect to the original sources. The analogue recordings originating from EMI and Erato (CD1-15) have been remastered in 96 kHz from the original tapes. These are, therefore, the first recordings where the presence and definition of sound are heard in such detail.

In the decade since releasing his 2006 debut, Brent Cobb also emerged as a Music Row songwriter, landing songs with high-profile artists like Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, and Kenny Chesney, among others. His move into the Nashville establishment may have brought his career some well-deserved success, but as an artist, his heart remained rooted in the Deep South of his hometown, Ellaville, Georgia. Produced by Brent’s cousin Dave Cobb (Shooter Jennings, Sturgill Simpson) at his Low Country Sound studio, Shine on Rainy Day is personal and soulful, with little of contemporary country’s gloss and a stripped-down, earthy poeticism that some have likened to Kris Kristofferson’s early albums. On these ten songs, small-town Georgia — its sights, smells, feelings, residents, and customs — are Brent’s muse and partner. It’s a world he sketches in “South of Atlanta,” a gently sprawling five-minute waltz whose lyrics celebrate a town “where the water is clean, loblollies grow tall and winters ain’t mean.” It’s a feeling he yearns for in the easy rise and fall of “Country Bound,” as he questions what’s missing in his crowded city lifestyle. Even when not directly addressing his muse, its tone and texture creep in on deep, bluesy tracks like “Let the Rain Come Down” and “Black Crow,” the latter of which features some fine slide work by Jason Isbell. Framing the songs are Dave’s unfussy arrangements and natural production style, which really bring out the relaxed intimacy of Brent’s writing. Whether it’s the family connection or merely a shared understanding of what is needed, the two Cobbs seem to bring out the best in each other on this fine release. ~ Timothy Monger

This live recording brings together an extraordinary combination of artistic abundance: Remy Ballot conducting the music of Anton Bruckner, enacted at Bruckner’s place of work, the basilica of St. Florian in Upper Austria. Carmen Gomes has won many awards in the Netherlands and surrounding areas. Like so many new European singers, she sings in English. Her style is bluesy and intimate with a sexy voice that’s sweet as dark tupelo honey, and her interpretations are unerring. Idea of this album would take on the challenge of reinterpreting Harry Belafonte’s “Belafonte Sings the Blues” was originally suggested by Harry van Dalen, owner of the eminent High End audio shop Rhapsody. He thought that Carmen’s band would be perfect for reinterpreting the mood and the sound of the classic album.

‘Belafonte Sings the Blues’ was one of Carmen Gomes’ favorite albums when she as a kid spent countless hours listening to music and making cassette tape compilations from her parents vast LP collection. So when confronted with the task of making the arrangements of the songs for ‘Carmen Gomes sings the Blues’, I first recreated Carmen’s 60 minute tape for inspiration. Since my recreation was in the digital domain, it was not possible to wear out the tape, but I did listen to it extensively. It became clear to me that in order to capture the spirit of those blues albums, I would have to keep the arrangements as simple as possible in order to give the musicians the opportunity to play straight from the heart. Some songs were kept close to the original arrangement, while a song like the ‘Way That I Feel’, was completely reharmonized. Others like ‘Hallelujah, I Just Love Her So’ had the form extended in order to create more space. Muddy Waters’ Mannish Boy, while not being on the album is paraphrased in the introduction to ‘God Bless The Child’ and ‘Losing Hand’. The 11 songs were recorded live in the studio in front of a studio audience.

This new recording for PENTATONE includes his breathtaking Symphony No.1 op. 10 — the student work which brought Shostakovich international fame.

While indebted to the Russian masters, Shostakovich’s early works nevertheless demonstrate his precocious brilliance, originality and flair and they offer an intriguing glimpse at the evolution of his distinctive, mature style. From the easy going and good humoured Scherzo op. 1, the Tchaikovskian Theme and Variations in B-flat major op.3, or the Stravinskyan Scherzo op. 7, his youthful vitality is never in doubt. But with his Symphony No.1 op. 10 he produced his first masterpiece and found his own distinctive voice. It’s a thrilling work full of sardonic edginess, pained introspection and dramatic outbursts, and closes with a barnstorming finale. Composed 10 years later, the aptly titled Five Fragments for orchestra op. 42 are short, pungent and austere pieces; the arresting style is modernist but the sound is unmistakeably Shostakovich.

Following his acclaimed conducting dbut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2014, Gustavo Gimeno took up the post of Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg with the 2015/2016 season. An auspicious collaboration with PENTATONE followed in 2016 and three releases with the orchestra are planned in 2017. “His musical rhetorics are refined, his grip on the structure of the compositions is accurate and convincing” observed Joep Stapel in the NRC Handelsblad, “Gimeno knew how to keep the tension and made the musicians … excel.”

In the first decades of the eighteenth century, London was one of the most important European music centres.
There was a rich courtly life as well as a great deal of music-making among the bourgeoisie. Just like Amsterdam, London was a hub of music pub- lishers and instrument builders. London’s musical life had a strong Italian orientation. It was mainly the Italian composers who were suc- cessful there, especially Arcangelo Corelli. Although his oeuvre is lim- ited to instrumental music and only has six opus numbers, his influence was considerable. For example, the London-based Italian Francesco Geminiani made orchestral arrange- ments of Corelli’s violin sonatas opus 5. Geminiani’s Concerti grossi opus
1 and Corelli’s own Concerti grossi opus 6 were published in many differ- ent arrangements.
Born in Halle, Germany, composer George Frideric Handel started in his hometown as an organist, and settled more or less permanently in London in 1717. By then he already had a career in Italy, where he was very suc- cessful as a young composer and kept company with the likes of Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti. Handel saw himself primarily as a composer of vocal music. He had written several operas, which had been performed to much acclaim in Italy and Germany. His first opera, Almira, which has Italian as well as German arias and recitatives, was premiered as early as 1705 in Hamburg. In Italy he learned a great deal about opera from Alessandro Scarlatti, and audiences in that country were wildly enthusiastic about his operas.

At the turn of the 19th to the 20th century the violin sonata experienced a considerable renaissance. A fundamentally conservative genre, it suddenly sparkled with vitality. Mozart developed its classical formula: violin and piano are two equal partners in dialogue with neither the piano being reduced to a mere accompanist nor the violin being reduced to mere colouring of the melody voice; a three-movement-pattern; the first movement being based on the so called sonata form with two themes of clearcut atmospheric contrast and their developement.

This recording, by two generations of musicians from the Kuijken family (Veronica, Sigiswald, Sara and Wieland Kuijken), with my wife Marleen Thiers, 2nd viola in the quintet, was made with so-called ‘modern’ instruments. Although our name is generally linked with ‘period performance practice’, listeners should not expect or seek a deliberate, specific ‘historic’ tendency in this recording: this was not what defined our collaboration for this production… I would even venture to say that in the first place we allowed ourselves to be moved and motivated by the immense strength exuded by these Beethoven pieces, based on our own musical experience and intuition; what we shared was astonishment — and joy. For six long years, our pop star hasn’t brought out an album. Her last, and certainly not her best, was Lotus. Aguilera has lost none of the intensity of her voice, the ingenuity that sees her bringing in children’s choirs, synth melodies or sensual, emotional ballads. Liberation is more than just a hip-hop album, but the reconstruction of a woman, a benevolent cry that aims to bring comfort to those who, like her, have known trying times. There is a before and an after 1986 for Marcus Miller. That year, the bassist was 27 years old and composed and produced Miles Davis’ famous Tutu. Since then, the career of this four-string virtuoso has expanded with stunning albums for others (over 500!) and for himself (more than twenty), as well as multiple collaborations… Like often with Marcus Miller, the borders between jazz, funk, soul and blues are magnificently blurred. And it is once again the case with this Laid Black. After Afrodeezia, which he designed like a musical journey through his personal history, retracing the path of his ancestors, Laid Black falls within present time with a cocktail of all the urban sounds he loves: hip-hop, trap, soul, funk, R&B and, of course, jazz. In fact, this kind of 180° overview is the man’s trademark. Shuffling between various currents of African-American music. And even inserting a few clever references when he covers Que Será, Será (Whatever Will Be, Will Be) popularised by Doris Day, but using Sly Stone’s arrangement from 1973 Fresh… For this 2018 opus, Marcus Miller has called upon a few sharp shooters such as Trombone Shorty, Kirk Whalum, Take Six, Jonathan Butler and the young Belgian soul sister Selah Sue. There was a time when Ray LaMontagne was viewed as the heir apparent to Van Morrison or Jeff Buckley. Part of the Light shakes up those assumptions as the New Hampshire singer/songwriter balances the quiet, loud, and ethereal. Ray’s voice ripples and expands like a pebble splash in a quiet lake, so the vocal echo on “It’s Always Been You” adds a haunting contrail. “As Black as Blood Is Blue” hints that LaMontagne has some Metallica cassettes stashed in his attic. In 2016 Ray LaMontagne once again threw everyone off guard with Ouroboros. Not really surprising coming from someone who could never quite be put in a specific genre with his blend of haunted folk à la Nick Drake, southern soul, refined blues and classic rock. With this sixth album created with Jim James from the band My Morning Jacket, the songwriter from New Hampshire provided a new piece to his stylistic puzzle. Ouroborosfeatured the markers of his previous album while bringing a new dreamy, almost psychedelic touch, straight out of an old Pink Floyd record. LaMontagne had never sounded so haunted and dreamlike… Two years later, Part Of Light takes him back to more roots and classical considerations: an heir to Cat Stevens rather than David Gilmour. This seventh opus is above all else carried by an impressive spiritual force. An impulse wrapped in a sound full of reverberation, giving his songs more power. And splendour. © Clotilde Maréchal
