The cover says: “Here is an album with an exciting difference. For the first time, by the use of carefully selected songs, this recording tells the complete story of a love affair–from the thrill of the first meeting, through the joyous times together and vows forevermore, to the lovers’ parting and thoughts of days gone by.”

“In Remembrance Of You” was the last pop album that Anita Bryant released on Columbia Records. It is an album with a unique concept – by the use of carefully selected songs, played in sequence, the recording tells the complete story of a love affair – from the thrill of the first meeting, through the joyous times together and vows to love forevermore, to the lovers’ parting, and thoughts of days gone by. The final song – the title selection of the album “In Remembrance Of You” was written by Gordon Jenkins, and Anita infuses this song with all the bittersweet emotion of a lost love – the once-in-a-lifetime love that will never come again, the love that can never possibly be replaced.

Aqueduct Ensemble have announced their debut album – “Improvisations On An Apricot”. The ensemble’s core is a collaborative project between Ohio-based Keith Freund (Lejsovka & Freund and Trouble Books) and his neighbour Stu, a piano tuner and professional pianist. Reflecting on the record Freund recounts – ”I floated the idea to collaborate on a sort of 70s/80s ECM kinda vibe, and soon started bringing my laptop and a couple microphones over to his house to collect his improvisations and have him add to pieces I had started. Other friends from the neighbourhood dropped by to add parts here and there as well”.

”It’s been a couple years, but I’ve put together a new record, this time with my neighbour Stu and a few other friends. Stu’s been tuning the piano Linda and I were using for our Lejsovka & Freund and Trouble Books recordings, and I’ve always enjoyed the test scales and vignettes he would run through checking his work.

The recordings were made primarily in the summers of 2016 & 2017 (with a break in-between to mourn the triumph of neo-fascism as well as the passing of beloved pets). Ultimately I tried to follow the feel of those summer nights and the tranquillity they offered. Open air or at least open windows, drifting along, you know?”

Recorded in 1968 at the Olympia Theatre in Paris, Aretha Franklin exhilarated her adoring fans, performing beloved hits and breathtaking covers. Her powerhouse vocals have remained unmatched, as evident on this sensational live recording. The set included energetic versions of Charles’ “Come Back Baby,” Redding’s “Respect” and her own masterpiece, “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You).” The album peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Top R&B albums.

Atlantic’s Jerry Wexler once said that this concert album was an embarrassment to him, criticizing the inferior band (actually, the musicians that usually accompanied her live in the late ’60s). Composed of her first few big singles and cuts from her first three albums, it doesn’t match the classic studio versions and could be considered her least essential ’60s Atlantic LP. That’s not to say, though, that it doesn’t sound pretty good, with fine if basic readings of a lot of her most popular late-’60s material, although the horns fall distressingly out of tune at a key point in the instrumental break of “Chain of Fools”.

Pianist Benito Gonzalez, drummer Gerry Gibbs and bassist Essiet Okon Essiet assemble to tackle the music of McCoy Tyner. The result is a beautifully played, unequivocal triumph of sound and spirit, on which the trio embraces the the spirit of Tyner without succumbing to cliches.

The title says it all. Pianist Benito Gonzalez, drummer Gerry Gibbs and bassist Essiet Okon Essiet assemble to tackle the music of McCoy Tyner. The result is a beautifully played, unequivocal triumph of sound and spirit. The trio, Gonzalez, Gibbs and Essiet, have a blast with this material. Gibbs charges into it with brawn, while Gonzalez interprets Tyner aggressively, passionately, with modern flourishes and a driving style. Essiet is intriguing to say the least, in a support role, diving into a blend of traditional, contemporary and fusion lines that push the arrangements into some truly dazzling areas. It is all ridiculously high energy. Gonzalez takes control on the rapturous “Naima”; Gibbs and Essiet drive the opening tunes, “Fly With the Wind” and the subsequent track, “Just Feelin’.” Together, the trio embraces the elan, the spirit of Tyner, without succumbing to cliches. The material sings, thanks to the high energy performances you’d expect from each of these musicians. They’ve proven themselves on their independent projects, and they prove themselves as a trio on Passion Reverence Transcendence.

James Bay – Electric Light (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz  | Time – 48:26 minutes | 606 MB | Genre: Alternative
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Universal Records

Following on from his huge multi-platinum debut album Chaos And The Calm, James Bay returns with Electric Light. Towering, rocky and soulful songs, it sounds like he’s grasped influences in electronic music for this release.

“If I had to describe my first album visually it would probably be a flame – while this new album is about a real sonic and artistic evolution for me. The feeling of a 100 watt bulb expanding and brightening is what I envisioned. ‘Electric Light’ came to my mind and I knew it was perfect.”

Don’t ignore the promise of kinetic crackle that lies within the title of Electric Light, James Bay’s 2018 sequel to his 2015 debut, Chaos and the Calm. Bay didn’t bother with such tacky modern accouterments as electronic rhythms and pitch-shifted vocals on Chaos and the Calm, preferring a burnished, handsome classicism. All of that is thrown out the window on Electric Light, a loose concept album tracing the rise and fall of a romance, all set to modern soul grooves and bright neon hooks. The sonic shift is startling, but Bay grounds his second album with the same sturdy songcraft of Chaos and the Calm, so Electric Light is hardly all flash and style: beneath its glitter and blare, the songs are tight, melodic, and memorable, worming their way into the subconscious with ease. Still, the initial appeal of Electric Light — and one that doesn’t wane with repeated plays — is how the album is vibrant, colorful, and alive in a way that Bay’s debut simply wasn’t. It sparkles with digital textures that give plenty of space for Bay to sing with a soulful abandon, a quality that wasn’t necessarily evident on Chaos and the Calm either. Admirers of the deliberateness of the debut may find Electric Light a bit too slick and modern, yet that’s precisely the album’s appeal: Bay never seems like he’s pandering; he sounds thrilled that he has a chance to make the kind of layered, genre-bending pop that he wants to make, and listeners may well find that freedom alluring.

British singer-songwriter James Bay follows up four digital-only EPs with his first full-length album, recorded in Nashville with triple Grammy-winning producer Jacquire King. Chaos And The Calm includes the top 10 British single Hold Back The River from the EP of the same name. In 2015 Bay received the Critics’ Choice trophy at the Brit Awards, putting him in the same illustrious company as previous winners and international superstars Adele, Florence + The Machine, Ellie Goulding and Sam Smith.

James Bay is a young British singer and songwriter whose heartfelt songs and passionate vocal style suggest a greater maturity and experience than one would expect from an artist whose debut album was released when he was 24 years old. Chaos and the Calm, Bay’s first full-length album following a pair of well-received EPs, reveals he has a precocious talent as a songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist, and is just as comfortable with outgoing tracks like “Collide” as he is with intimate, personal numbers such as “Let It Go” as he winds together elements of pop, folk, rock, blues, and soul. Often compared to Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard, Chaos and the Calm shows James Bay has the style and the ability to stand on his own, and it’s the work of a new performer with an impressive potential.

On Aftertones, Janis Ian (guitar/piano/vocals) continued the artistic, and to a lesser extent, the commercial success she garnered on her previous effort Between The Lines (1975). Once again, she assembled some of the finest session musicians from the Big Apple to animate her intimately sensitive sonic portraits and caricatures. Although Ian would not surpass the universality of “At Seventeen,” much of this disc continues the theme and moods expressed as far back as Stars (1974). Ian’s advanced folk sensibilities are emotional progressions away from the weepy and introspective nature heard from her mid-’70s singer/songwriter contemporaries. Part of Ian’s enticement is the marriage between achingly beautiful melodies and thoroughly personalized lyrics. The album commences with the title track setting the tenor and sonic ambiance. The acoustic guitar and compact string section lend to “Aftertones” slightly baroque feel, which adds to the song’s palpable isolation (“‘Til all that’s left to see are aftertones/I take them home/ We live alone”). The beautifully bitter “Love Is Blind,” and the harrowing “Don’t Cry, Old Man” are piercing in their honesty. They contrast the lighter fare of “I Would Like to Dance,” as well as the tongue-in-cheek “Boy, I Really Tied One On,” or the overtly kinky blues “This Must Be Wrong.” “Goodbye to Morning” is a dark jazzy ode that stands out as one of the best sides on the album, featuring some distinct interaction between Richard Davis (acoustic bass) and Ian’s own rambling, unplugged fretwork. Folk and gospel legends Odetta (vocals) and Phoebe Snow (vocals) join in on Aftertones magnum opus, “Hymn.” The trio soulfully swaddle their subtle harmonies into a unified lead as they languidly allow their own vocal aftertones resonate with unencumbered majesty.

This is Janis Ian’s second album from her re-emergence in the early to mid-’70s as one of the genre’s most inspired and original singer/songwriters. While this title houses Ian’s biggest international hit, the confessional “At Seventeen,” the entire effort combines her honest and confessional lyrics with an equally engaging blend of pop/rock and definite jazz and blues. She assembled much of the same ensemble that had worked on her previous long-player, Stars (1975), and much of the material retains the same warmth and intimacy in both her craft as well as the presentation. Unlike the more somber and introverted tracks that dominate Between the Lines (1975), the disc commences with a prime example of Ian’s infectious coziness on the light and airy “When the Party’s Over.” This is one of the title’s more straightforward love songs and features an appropriately lilting counter-harmony from Dennis Pereca. More typical are the somewhat dark and oblique “From Me to You,” “The Come On,” and the despairing title track. Darker still are “In the Winter” and the abject loneliness of “Tea and Sympathy” both of which feature some engaging arrangements courtesy of famed arranger/conductor Ron Frangipane, whose clients include Melanie and Townes Van Zandt as well as both John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Underlying the heady orchestration and truly at the center of Ian’s skill are her emotively powerful yet reserved melodies. This was undoubtedly a factor in “At Seventeen” becoming a Grammy winner as well as a chart-topping single stateside and a Top 20 hit throughout much of Europe as well as more disparate locations such as Israel. The strength of material and public interest garnered by Between the Lines would continue on her next equally powerful long-player, Aftertones (1976). This album is a recommended starting point for potential enthusiasts, as well as a touchstone to be repeatedly revisited.

Singer/songwriter Janis Ian followed up her understated masterwork Aftertones (1976) with this long-player, which includes some equally engaging and varied material. Although she’d eventually return to using studio heavies for the remainder of her ’70s and early-’80s output, Miracle Row (1977) prominently features Ian’s touring band, which highlights the respective talents of Claire Bay (vocals), and a power trio of Jeff Layton (bass/horns/horn arrangements), Stu Woods (bass), and Barry Lazarowitz (drums/percussion). Each of the musicians were themselves recording session stalwarts and had interacted with the artist in various capacities for several years. Never one to shy away from controversial or blatant social observations, “Party Lights” is one of Ian’s more personal exposés, dealing with the drug-fuelled Jekyll and Hyde decadence of the mid-to-late ’70s. The melody is penetrating with a sense of foreboding drama, which is evident musically as well as lyrically. “Miracle Row”/ “Maria” adopts a lilting tropical air behind some of Ian’s most affective contributions on the album and deal, although somewhat obliquely, with her own sexuality. These introspective themes are carried into the stark and harrowing “Sunset Of Your Life” which confronts the fear and uncertainty of aging with a refreshingly honest poignancy. These decidedly serious themes are contrasted by the up-tempo, funky “Let Me Be Lonely,” and the jazz fusion-riddled “Take To The Sky.” As the easy-going “I Want To Make You Love Me” featuring some nice harmonies from Bay as well as the intimacy of “Candlelight” reveal, Ian had not lost her knack for lovely, simple, and otherwise unencumbered tunes. In fact, it is her blend of affective words and catchy melodies that sent the Spanish-flavored “Will You Dance” to the top of the singles chart in Japan where it remained for the better part of three months, eventually sending the album into the realm of six-figure sales and platinum status. Ian admits that the drugged insanity of the music biz and many of its’ concurrent denizens were ultimately behind the split-up of the tight combo featured on “Miracle Row.” Her self-titled follow-up would continue the jazzy leanings hinted at here, and she would return to the heavyweight talents of Ron Carter (bass), Richard Davis (bass), and Steve Gadd (drums).

When Janis lan’s self-titled 1978 album failed to crack the Top 100, it was clear that changes were in order. Here, she turns to producer Ron Frangipane and a surprising songwriting partner, Euro-disco maven Giorgio Moroder, who brings in his dance tracks for “Fly Too High,” which was intended for the motion picture Foxes. More appropriately, Ian also pairs with Albert Hammond for the leadoff track, “The Other Side of the Sun.” Even on her own, however, she is attempting a more timely pop style: “Memories” is as much of a disco cut as the Moroder one. That makes the album more engaging on the surface than her recent releases, but less compelling. As a commercial move, Night Rains failed to chart in the US, but was an international best seller.

After a three-year (1971-1974) hiatus, singer/songwriter Janis Ian (guitar/vocals) reinvented her craft on the groundbreaking Stars (1974) long-player. Her penchant for hauntingly beautiful melodies and incisive lyrics remains at the center of Ian’s craft as she weaves an array of uniquely expressive observations with timeless poignancy. She has publicly acknowledged that the introspective title track that opens the album was inspired by Don McLean’s “Vincent.” Ian’s reflections are almost naked in their intimacy as she looks within the psyche of celebrity and draws comparisons between the respective astral and physical bodies that “Stars” inhabit, albeit briefly in either case. The song’s sparse acoustic guitar self-accompaniment is somewhat an anomaly as the remainder of the album incorporates various backing combos. The cosy and laid-back “Page Nine” demonstrates a jazzier side to Ian’s arrangements and features some inviting contributions from percussion legend and studio heavyweight George Devens (vibraphone), who had been performing in Ian’s studio coterie since her second release, For All the Seasons of Your Mind (1967). “The Man You Are in Me” is instrumentally highlighted by Richard Davis (bass), who impels the rhythm and provides Ian with a sonic backdrop beguiling the listener into its practically hypnotic melody. There is also a fair share of folk-infused material, ranging from the easygoing and heartfelt peon “Thankyous” to the decidedly more political and strident “Dance with Me” which deals fairly directly with the Vietnam experience. Perhaps the best-known cut on Stars also obliquely references the war and is considered the disc’s crown jewel. “Jessie” is a riveting love song that is as beautiful as it is soul-wrenchingly poignant. The delicate understated score only adds to the composition’s empathy. “Applause” fittingly concludes the effort in a Broadway-esque fashion with a grandiose production reminiscent of something out of Cabaret or A Chorus Line. The understated and comparatively reticent middle section is dramatically bookended with an otherwise embellished and knowingly campy arrangement. Stars set the stage for Ian to further develop her mature and meditative themes utilizing a wide variety of musical styles a hallmark that separated her from her weepy and otherwise introspective peers.

Following the runaway success of his sophomore release CLAIM, one-time bluesman turned millennial blue-eyed soul wunderkind Jesper Munk presents his breakthrough third album Favourite Stranger, along with lead single “Happy When I’m Blue” and striking preview track “Stranger”.

Jesper Munk returns with Favourite Stranger, a new album that both cements his place as one of the brightest musical innovators in the German pop-rock milieu and will no doubt serve as a long-awaited introduction to an international audience. For Munk, the release of Favourite Stranger marks that rarest of moments for a young artist: a genuine creative breakthrough. Where both 2016’s CLAIM and his 2013 debut For In My Way it Lies sought to pay homage to the blues masters that inspired him to pick up a guitar in the first place, as well as contemporaries such as the Black Keys and Gary Clark Jr, Favourite Stranger represents the outcome of his mission to rip it up and start again – and in so doing offers an intimate portrait of the artist as a young man, by turns more honest, vulnerable and exposed, and at the same time more musically outward-looking and authentic than anything else he has ever recorded.

Jim Ed Brown was an American country singer-songwriter who came to fame as a member of the 1950’s vocal group The Browns, where he was the band’s lead male vocalist. In 1965, when the group was still together, he embarked on a solo career that would eventually eclipse the success of The Browns. Jim Ed Brown had his greatest success in the late 1970’s, when he regularly performed duets with Helen Cornelius.

Good luck to Joey Alexander if he wants to avoid any comment about his very young age… The pianist’s third studio album is released and he’s only sixteen! Born in 2003 in Bali, Alexander lived in Jakarta between the age of 8 and 10 before moving to New York in 2014, where he’s had one of the most searing career jumps in the history of jazz. Dubbed by godfathers such as Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis, the Indonesian prodigy reinterpreted standards like Lush Life, Round Midnight, I Mean You and It Might As Well Be Spring on My Favorite Things, his first studio recording released in 2015, in a duo and trio with Larry Grenadier, and the excellent bass player Brad Mehldau… The following year, he passed a new milestone by writing most compositions himself on his second opus, Countdown, collaborating once again with Grenadier, as well as bass player Dan Chmielinski, drummer Ulysses Owens Jr., and saxophonist Chris Potter… With Eclipse, Joey Alexander once again takes our breath away, as he never plays the card of technical show-off or needless virtuosity. Not once! His piano is deep. Jason Olaine, the producer on this 2018 album, corroborates the hype: “Joey is a young musician with an incredible talent, but he never omits to truly create and always tries to have fun playing. He’s not running after rewards or acclaim. Eclipse shows how much he’s committed to an amazing adventure.

Inspired by the total solar eclipse of August 21st, 2017, this album features six original compositions interpreted by bass player Reuben Rogers, drummer Eric Harland and on three tracks, saxophonist Joshua Redman. Alexander also covers a selection of very special tracks such as the Beatles’ Blackbird, John Coltrane’s Moment’s Notice, Bill Evans’ Time Remembered, and Ray Noble’s classic The Very Thought Of You. But no matter the work he approaches, his determination, his musical sense, the finesse with which he integrates space into his music merely leave us speechless. –  Clotilde Maréchal

Ever since the Star Wars franchise began in 1977, its music has been synonymous with legendary film composer John Williams. Now that the 86-year-old composer has announced that next year’s Episode IX will be the last time he’ll be scoring a Star Wars film, we can’t help feeling melancholic.

One of the most important things about any Star Wars movie is the soundtrack. Everyone knows how a Star Wars movie sounds. The opening is classic. There’s the great fanfare as the screen goes black and that big chord breaking into the familiar, triumphant main theme when the crawl starts. There are the leitmotifs of Luke, Leia, and The Imperial March, some of which fans can sing by heart. But the Solo: A Star Wars Story soundtrack is very different. For one thing, they don’t have the opening. Why? Because, like Rogue One before it, Solo is an anthology film, and does not have a crawl.

Solo is also like Rogue One in that composer John Williams did not write the score. He contributed (more on this in a minute) but the overall score was done by musician John Powell, who is best known for his work on How To Train Your Dragon and Shrek. (Yes, Shrek.)

The score for Solo is 20 tracks in all, 19 of which are done by Powell. The good news is none of the titles listed on the album are direct spoilers, so one can peruse the names in peace. Though some do bring to mind questions, such as the track entitled “Lando’s Closet.” Seriously, the man’s wardrobe gets its own theme song.

Denver-based trumpeter-composer Joshua Trinidad makes a strikingly original statement on his RareNoise Records debut, In November. Recorded in Giske, Norway, this highly evocative trio outing features the adventurous Norwegian guitarist-composer and ECM recording artist Jacob Young and drummer Stale Liavik Solberg, a central figure on Oslo’s improvising music scene. Brimming with deep and winding lyricism, Trinidad’s elegiac seventh album as a leader is a compelling mix of bold long tones on trumpet, atmospheric guitaristry, fluid melodic invention and daring group improv, all delivered with rare authority by the three intrepid improvisers. From the minor key rubato opener “Beside” to the melancholy soundscape “Bell (Hymn)” to a darkly entrancing “The Attic” and the stirring title track, Trinidad and his empathetic crew of deep listeners show respect toward space and silence on these spellbinding noirish numbers.

Old Fashioned Gal, the title of Kat Edmonson’s fourth record, certainly describes the singer. Edmonson doesn’t truck with modern styles, whether they’re musical or technological, but that doesn’t mean she’s stuck in the past. She’s working an older style — one that’s rooted in the first half of the 20th century — but she’s adding to tradition by writing a set of original songs that blend modern lyrical sensibilities with the style of the Great American Songbook. It’s a sly, subtle accent on a record that could be mistaken for an old-fashioned LP — the music and the arrangements are intimate, yet lush; the tempo is never hurried, which gives Edmonson plenty of time to luxuriate in her melodies — and that helps give this cabaret music an air of welcome freshness.
