John Williams’ score for “Star Wars” was recorded over eight sessions at Anvil Studios in Denham, England on March 5, 8–12, 15 and 16, 1977. The score was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra with Williams himself conducting. The score was orchestrated by Williams’s frequent associate Herbert W. Spencer, who also orchestrated The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The score was recorded by engineer Eric Tomlinson and edited by Kenneth Wannberg, and the scoring sessions were produced by Star Wars director George Lucas and supervised by Lionel Newman, head of 20th Century Fox’s music department.

By the end of the 1970s, John Williams was already a legend among filmmakers and film-scoring buffs. But the success of Star Wars elevated him to something he probably could have scarcely imagined–bona fide pop-culture icon. Williams’s masterful score to the first Star Wars sequel (and the chapter many sci-fi fans cite as the series’ most dark, emotionally complex, and satisfying) fleshes out his original character themes with some new ones while painting compelling musical portraits of alien worlds as disparate as the ice planet Hoth and the swampy Dagobah. Notable are the menacing, Prokofiev-inspired “Imperial Theme (Darth Vader’s March)”; the noble “Yoda and the Force”; and Hoth’s “Battle” cues, which are some of the most dramatic action cues ever. This expanded edition also fleshes out the already familiar themes with new tracks that restore the score to its status as a grand galactic symphony. A richly illustrated booklet is included as well, helping listeners place each piece of music in its proper cinematic context. Of his four attempts at coloring George Lucas’s rich stellar saga, this remains Williams’s most consistent and compelling.

The “Return of the Jedi” score was recorded at the Abbey Road studios in January and February 1983 by the London Symphony Orchestra. The score won another Oscar nomination for John Williams. Because of the decrease of popularity for the vinyl format, Return of the Jedi, which has the longest score of the original trilogy, was only released on one LP instead of two like the scores for its predecessors, A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

“The original intent behind the release of the three Special Edition soundtracks was to place all of the available Star Wars music on the market and in the hands of fans. Though this collection includes new music from the Special Edition of the film – previously unreleased music, a concert suite, and an alternate version of the music for the assault on Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge – it unfortunately doesn’t include the original Sy Snootles track or the original Ewok celebration track. The music for Return of the Jedi is presented chronologically, with source music and alternate cues tucked away at the end of each disc, making those particular cuts easier to ignore (highly recommended in the case of the overbearing “Jedi Rocks,” a new song composed for the Special Edition). Alas, ignoring John Williams’ insipid, Yanni-like new addition to the score, “Victory Celebration,” is only possible if you also manage to ignore the end title music. While the original celebration music, with its chorus line of demented Ewok voices, was no great joy, at least it had some interesting musical qualities. Despite its uninformative sleeve notes, this collection has a lot going for it. Musically, it sounds gorgeous; Williams turned in a score incorporating layer upon layer of thematic elements, risking a tendency toward composing music that was too ornate. Frills and trills abound, but Williams avoided allowing the score to be buried in them. Having the music assembled as a continuous master provides the listener with a more organic flow and a better listening experience overall, while the remixing and remastering have improved the sound and dynamic range enormously. Despite the missing music, this is definitely the version to have.” (Steven McDonald, AMG)

The original album was released to accompany the film (May 4, 1999). This release was certified Platinum in the U.S. and Gold in the UK, containing 17 tracks from selections of the score, meant to stand alone as a separate listening experience and not as one hears the score in the film. John Williams edited each track to present the score as one would hear it in a concert suite. Recorded in Abbey Road studios over a week, starting on February 10, 1999 performed by the London Voices and London Symphony Orchestra, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars score Williams had composed in over 16 years. The scores of the following two films would rely heavily upon tracking from this score, a decision that Williams and George Lucas had made early into production of the film.

“Once again, John Williams has exceeded my expectations and produced a lavish, rich, moving and thrilling score. Every fan of Star Wars—and of great music—is in his debt.” (George Lucas)

The Star Wars cycle, George Lucas’s stellar pop parable cum merchandising blitzkrieg, has long since made history as an unparalleled cinematic-cultural-marketing phenomena; somewhere Billy Jack should be in one envious, ass-kickin’ mood. Phantom Menace, easily the most eagerly anticipated film of the ’90s, returns to the saga’s roots and allows Lucas to flesh out the history of some of the fable’s core characters and conjure up a dazzling new cast of cohorts, antagonists, and alien realms for them to interact with and in. Thus, all composer John Williams had to do was essentially reinvent the world’s most popular wheel. The film-scoring legend has admirably risen to that daunting challenge, delivering an inventive score whose dynamics should surprise and delight even the most ardent SW fanatic. The Main Title and a few oh-so-sparing bars of a familiar Jedi theme are all that remains from the original trilogy’s lexicon, Williams having evolved the saga’s musical language, stylistic reach, and orchestral palette with masterful subtlety. The composer’s most ambitious surprise is the welcome addition of strong choral elements, which he uses in ways both majestic (“Duel of the Fates”) and menacing (“Passage Through the Planet’s Core”). And though the film revolves around a young boy (Anakin Skywalker, who will grow to be both corrupted and redeemed as Darth Vader), the only flirtation with cloying sentimentality comes with the innocently loping “Jar Jar’s Introduction.” In the tradition of the Cantina and Max Rebo’s Band of the previous trilogy, Williams and Lucas close out this musical installment with “Augie’s Municipal Band,” a Carnivale-esque romp that segues grandly into the composer’s swelling title music. Williams may be the master of a grand scoring tradition, but Phantom Menace is gratifying evidence that he seldom plays it safe–even when the Force is with him.

Originally released alongside the movie in 2002 by Sony Classical, the original motion picture soundtrack to Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones’ 13-track score from legendary composer John Williams has been remastered to maximize the recording’s dynamic range.

There’s never been anything quite like the symphonic film music series that John Williams has forged for George Lucas’s sprawling Star Wars saga. By the time the sixth chapter rolls around, Williams will have created a body of work that spans fully 30 years of his career, a virtual Ring Cycle of sci-fi/fantasy soundtrack music. While Attack of the Clones again achieves the high standards of its predecessors, it also succeeds by both forging some rewarding new musical themes at the same time it begins to bring the galactic fable full circle. The budding relationship between now-teenaged Anakin Skywalker and Amidala/Padme is informed by “Across the Stars–Love Theme from Attack of the Clones,” a grand romantic motif that’s infused with a subtle melancholy that hints at the tragedy that must ultimately befall the young lovers. The composer’s mastery of idiom and color serve him especially well in the action cues, infusing “Zam the Assassin and the Chase Through Coruscant” and “Jango’s Escape” with bracing doses of 20th-century modernism and its inherent rhythmic fury performed, as always, by the London Symphony Orchestra. Williams also incorporates the “Force” and “Jedi” themes of the first SW trilogy sparingly, before “Confrontation with Count Dooku and Finale” completes the musical/thematic tapestry by interweaving The Empire Strikes Back’s menacing “Imperial March” with both the new “Love Theme” and the Phantom Menace’s dramatic choral showcase “Duel of the Fates.” This sweeping denouement should rightfully take its place among the saga’s most compelling musical sequences. Purists may grouse at the obviously abridged music here, but given history a complete/ultimate edition of the score can’t be far behind. This soundtrack is issued with one of four different, collectible covers.

Originally released alongside the movie in 2005, the Episode III: Revenge of the Sith soundtrack features a score by five-time Oscar winner John Williams, who is also the composer and conductor of the score for each film in the 9 – chapter Star Wars saga. The score found on the Episode III soundtrack is decidedly darker than previous Star Wars prequel soundtracks, as the musical themes match the growing darkness woven into the story and the galaxy as the Empire consolidates its power at the conclusion of the prequel trilogy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will nonetheless be very familiar to any fan of the series, from the “Imperial March” to the main theme.

John Williams’ lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas’ beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can’t Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the “Imperial March” to the main theme. It’s remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you’ve heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating “General Grievous” and the rousing “New Hope” end theme.

The cellist Jan Vogler, who lives in New York and Dresden, has recorded three Double concertos for violin, cello and orchestra with his wife, the outstanding violinist Mira Wang, with the renowned Royal Scottish National Orchestra under direction of Peter Oundjian. Brahms’ famous Double concerto captivates with wonderfully sweeping melodies, romantic sounds, eloquent solos and great orchestral sound. The English press wrote about one of the previous concerts: “”Vogler, in particular, treated his solo sections like an operatic recitative, even in the faster Vivace sections of the finale, and Wang, his wife, matched him both in virtuosity and in beauty of tone. The highlight, however, was the opening of the slow movement, which produced sensational legato tone, soloists and orchestra slotting into one another like concentric circles, and creating a sound like molten chocolate. The American composer John Harbison (born 1938), whose cello concerto premiered by Yo-Yo Ma has already caused a sensation, composed the Double concerto for the Boston Symphony Orchestra commissioned by the Friends of the Dresden Festival. The highly praised world premiere with Jan Vogler and Mira Wang took place on April 8th 2010 in Boston under the direction of Carlos Kalmar. Now this colorful, dynamic work full of glittering virtuosity can be heard for the first time in a recording. The German composer Wolfgang Rihm (born 1953) is considered one of the most important composers of our time. His “”Duo Concerto””, performed at Carnegie Hall in New York by Jan Vogler and Mira Wang with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in 2015, completes this fascinating new recording of three Double concerts with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 46:01 minutes | 427 MB | Genre: Classical

Jean-Michel Blais paints intimate portraits of human vulnerabilities—sleep, illness, uncertainty, anger—on a captivating second album. His delicate piano compositions are fertile with musical references to, among others, Leo Sayer, Mendelssohn, and Radiohead (“roses”), and are blended with subtle electronic, vocal, and ambient dance effects. In “god(s),” Blais explores the idea of religious harmony with textures rich in Eastern flavor, while “a heartbeat away” ponders our mortality with music that reflects, races, and finally rests. The title track both reassures and unnerves, while ‘’sourdine” is a haunting meditation on our nighttime realms.

A 31 year-old Canadian, Jean-Michel Blais is no stranger to the neoclassical stage. After a first album bearing the sober title “II”, on Caroline Distribution, this offering consists of a new collection of tracks, (most of which have already been released separately over recent weeks) which are possessed of an irrepressible lyricism. On board his piano, which he has transformed into a magical music box, he travels with the winds, following the currents of his own insatiable creativity. In the middle, Blind, perhaps the most seductive track of these forty-five minutes (alongside sourdine…), immerses us in an ideal vision of a music which mixes acoustics and machines into a soothing and velvety whole. god(s) takes us somewhere else, to church perhaps: but the return of synths shows that Jean-Michel Blais might perhaps have different gods in mind. igloo could have been a spiritual, even pantheist, track, but Blais, who isn’t above a little caustic wit, is quite urban about it: the “igloo” in question is a reference to contemporary cities, full of “caverns”, where everything is stacked over everything else. Henceforth, Blais’s name will be synonymous with unique sonic flavours. But there is something here of that bitter, fraternal, soft and sensual melancholy that runs through much of North American music, and which permeates the sonic spaces of a Copland (Quiet City) or a Bernard Herrmann (Les Neiges du Kilimandjaro) and the obstinate figures of a Steve Reich (The Four Sections) or the curling wisps of one of the most imaginative representatives of Canadian pop, like Patrick Watson ― think of the latter’s Lighthouse where we find that same vision of the instrument, as if stripped of its hammers. Jean-Michel Blais takes his time, discreetly. Under his elegant veneer, he knows how to be tenacious: his quotations (from the entrancingly slow movement of Rachmaninov’s Second Concerto, for example, on roses) make for salutary and soothing escapes. Blais is holding out his hand to you. It would be rude to turn him down.  –  Pierre-Yves Lascar

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 46:41 minutes | 509 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Brownswood Recordings

2018 debut album, by prodigious keys player, composer and producer Joe Armon-Jones, is buoyant, celebratory and welcoming. With a background in jazz, he draws from influences in dub, hip-hop and soul. Different traditions are infused and commingled together. Soulful brass arrangements are colored with carefully-tuned atmospherics; individual flashes of brilliance are bound into the album’s bigger picture. He’s part of London’s young, jazz-influenced music scene. Drawn from that same close-knit circle, the album features the likes of Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia and Oscar Jerome. It’s playing with those – along with Ezra Collective, which he co-founded, and touring with the likes of Ata Kak and Pharoahe Monch – which has honed his playing and grown his ideas. It’s made for a record with an unmistakable depth. He draws on deep musical understanding, making music which is warm and has a feeling of joy. A document of his vision for bringing together his different influences, it’s also a testament to hard-earned, head-turning musical virtuosity.

A madman savant of the keyboards, who knows his Herbie Hancock like the back of his hand, Joe Armon-Jones offers yet more proof of the rude state of health of the British jazz scene. Previously published in the compilation We Out Here (a Qobuzissime record!) which came out on Gilles Peterson’s label Brownswood Recordings in February 2018, this co-founder of Ezra Collective has now brought out his first record as a bandleader. Like his spiritual siblings who come from the same scene, Armon-Jones was brought up on a thousand different sounds. So this is jazz: but fusion too, and club music, afrobeat, hip hop, neo-soul, acid jazz, dub and funk, all rolled up in his Starting Today which also features artists like Nubya Garcia, Moses Boyd, Ras Asheber, Oscar Jerome, Big Sharer, Kwake Bass… Never deeply jazz in the classical sense, this record holds echoes of the late Seventies and early Eighties, when soul and funk infiltrated the genre, for better and for worse. Old-timers will think of Roy Ayers, Bernard Wright, Ramsey Lewis, Ronnie Laws, Ronnie Foster, the Blackbirds, the Headhunters, Alphonse Mouzon and a few others. But Joe Joe Armon-Jones never loses sight of the fact that he’s living in 2018 and not 1978, and he points this out from time to time, which means that his album remains free of any whiff of formaldehyde, and retains a sense of fun, as a furious and groovy bout of channel-surfing. – Marc Zisman

Searching for Heritage is a cassette tape that John Butler recorded and sold while he was busking on the streets of Fremantle in 1996. It is a collection of instrumental songs, some of which (“Ocean” and “Valley”) were re-recorded on the debut self-titled album John Butler. During this time, Butler was usually playing on his own. Completely self funded, it sold three and a half thousand copies and enabled Butler to fund his first CD recording.

The tape is highly sought after by collectors and is very much unavailable other than from second hand dealers. No copies remain for sale and Butler has stressed that it won’t be re-released anytime in his foreseeable future.

Following his sublime Book Of Intuition released in 2016 with bass player Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake, Kenny Barron is expanding his trio with tenor saxophonist Dayna Stephens and trumpeter Mike Rodriguez. The elegance, intelligence, refinement and perfect swing of the pianist are well-known, and for his first entry with the label Blue Note, the artist from Philadelphia now based in New York finds additional inspiration in the ardour of his accomplices. For these Concentric Circles, Barron opted for a repertoire mainly centred around his own compositions, complemented by Caetano Veloso’s Aquele frevo axe, drummer Lenny White’s L’s Bop, and Thelonious Monk’s Reflections. His quintet firmly bites into a hard-bop style, at times punctuated with Latino rhythms. More than anything, it’s the spontaneity of interventions and the fluidity of exchanges between the five men that make this album so enjoyable. None of them tried to reinvent the wheel, just make high-level jazz, without grandstanding or using frills. – Marc Zisman

Lake Street Dive will release Free Yourself Up, its second album with Nonesuch Records, on May 4. The four-member band—drummer Michael Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, singer Rachael Price, and guitarist/trumpeter Michael “McDuck” Olson—self-produced the album at Goosehead Palace Studios in Nashville, TN, with engineer Dan Knobler.

While Boston’s Lake Street Dive have always had a soulful, R&B-influenced sound, they’ve boiled it down to a pure, honestly delivered essence on their sixth full-length album, 2018’s heartfelt Free Yourself Up. Having honed their skills studying jazz at the New England Conservatory of Music, the members of Lake Street Dive are supremely talented performers who balance their respective strengths throughout the album. In fact, although she’s often in the background on-stage, bassist Bridget Kearney (who released her own solo album in 2017) is responsible for writing almost half of the album’s songs, and earns co-writes on several more. Many of her compositions display a subtle yet incisive feminist energy that helps lend the band a uniquely personal perspective. On “Good Kisser,” she admonishes an ex-lover who can’t keep from talking to others about their affair, saying “If you’re gonna tell them everything/Tell them I’m a good kisser/Tell them all the things you told me/In your desperate whisper.” Maximizing that powerful female energy is Tennessee-raised lead singer Rachael Price, whose dusky, highly resonant vocals, reminiscent of Dusty Springfield, ground the album with a warm virtuosity. It also doesn’t hurt that Kearney, guitarist Mike Olson, drummer Mike Calabrese, and touring keyboardist Akie Bermiss frame her in earthy, organic arrangements with a tactile, live-in-the-studio feel. To achieve that vibe, the bandmembers helmed the sessions themselves in Nashville with longtime friend and engineer Dan Knobler. It’s a welcome shift from the somewhat buttoned-up, ’60s Wall of Sound approach of 2016’s Side Pony, and brings to mind the windblown ’70s albums of artists like Fleetwood Mac, Rufus & Chaka Khan, Minnie Riperton, and others. The change also seems to reflect the shift in the social and political climate following the 2016 U.S. presidential election. On the cheeky, Lenny Kravitz-esque “Dude,” they say they “used to kick it like Joe and Obama,” and deftly touch upon notions of male privilege and the Me Too movement by asking the question, “Would you like me more if I was a dude?” Similarly, on the Kearney and Price-written ballad “I Can Change,” Price sings with naked poignancy, “Forget that old adage/That history continues to keep us from the world we wanna see…fear won’t rule my heart tonight.” Ultimately, it’s that kind of positive-minded change, both musically and emotionally, that makes Free Yourself Up such a liberating experience.

John Williams: A Life In Music – a brand new album of iconic movie scores by the world’s most successful film composer – including Star Wars, Jurassic Park, E.T. and many more. The album, which will be released on May the 4th (International Star Wars Day) features brand new recordings with the London Symphony Orchestra, who recorded many of the original versions, and includes a world premiere recording of Schindler’s List for cello – which has never been heard before.

Recorded by an 86-piece orchestra, this epic collection of music was conducted by Gavin Greenaway and recorded at London’s Air Studios. The 10-track album features Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter, performed by the LSO for the very first time. The premiere of Schindler’s List is the first time Williams’ official arrangement for cello has ever been recorded.

The LSO’s close connection with Williams dates back nearly 40 years, and the standard is there to be heard in these new recordings. From writing the world’s best-loved soundtracks – including Jaws, ET and the Home Alone films – to conducting some of the worlds most accomplished orchestras, Williams truly is one of the greatest living composers of our generation.

Following this year’s Oscar nominations, Williams broke his own record with more Oscar nominations than any other living person – a title he first earned in 2016. Williams has also won five Academy Awards, seven BAFTAs, 24 Grammy’s, four Golden Globes, five Emmys and numerous gold and platinum records.

This year, the Hollywood legend celebrates sixty years in movies. Alongside the release of this once-in-a-lifetime album, Williams will also conduct the LSO in an extremely rare performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall, making it the 86-year-old composer’s first performance in the UK for 22 years.

Over the span of his extraordinary career, Williams has graced the TV screens and touched the hearts of people across the world with his music, and this new album promises to do the same.

Into the crowded field containing pairings of Beethoven’s first two piano concerto come pianist Louis Schwizgebel (formerly Schwizgebel-Wang) and conductor Thierry Fischer, leading the London Philharmonic Orchestra. They make a mark precisely by not treating these two Beethoven concertos as a pair, but as distinctive entities as disparate as any pair of early piano sonatas might be. The Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15, was actually composed after the Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 19, but in the hands of Schwizgebel and Fischer, who shape both works with an unusual depth of dialogue, it is the later first concerto that really looks back to Mozart. The first-movement orchestral exposition, under Fischer, even evokes Mozart’s Paris works in its smooth lightness, answered by Schwizgebel with a kind of relaxed wit that spins out into the longer Beethoven cadenza. The Piano Concerto No. 2, by contrast, is ebullient, even rollicking, with the finale taken at a brisk clip that sets Schwizgebel’s sharp accents against the LPO’s winds in a wiry, enthusiastic finale. These are both distinctive Beethoven performances at a very high level, and they apparently mark the beginning of a Beethoven cycle that ought to offer much to look forward to.

Louis Schwizgebel has been described as ‘a pianist with a profound gift’ (Guardian, August 2013) and an ‘insightful musician’ (NY Times, May 2013). Born in 1987, he is already well-known on the international scene (appearances at Carnegie Hall, Vienna Musikverein, Royal Albert Hall, Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre, etc.). His third album for Aparté is devoted to two early masterpieces by Beethoven.

Louis Schwizgebel was selected by BBC Radio 3 as a BBC New Generation Artist. Here he plays with one of Britain’s finest orchestras, the London Philharmonic, conducted by Thierry Fischer. After his performances of these two Beethoven concertos at the Verbier Festival, under Charles Dutoit, at the Leeds competition and elsewhere, this recording is an eagerly awaited event in the young pianist’s career. Louis Schwizgebel. “Le brio avec lequel il court sur le clavier, et la dynamique qu’il impose… forcent l’admiration”. (Classica Oct 2013)

Makeness is pleased to announce his debut album, Loud Patterns, coming out April 6th on Secretly Canadian. Crafting tracks which make a virtue of disparate influences, Kyle Molleson manages to pull off something difficult: songs which have been tirelessly worked on, although sound loose-limbed and to-the-point. Loud Patterns is noticeably indebted to house and techno; there are 4/4 rhythms, and a no-nonsense directness that harks back to the Detroit pioneers. Channeling avant-garde experimentalism and an outsider’s interest in pop, Kyle embraces the distance between those two poles. Cosmic Slop, an underground institution in Leeds, was another touchstone. As Kyle recalls, “That place was definitely an awakening in terms of dance music.” It boasts a hand-built, peerless soundsystem, a near-pitch black dancefloor and a music policy that ranges from Dilla instrumentals to Detroit house. Loud Patterns arrives after a series of releases that have established his particular, in-between approach to dance-minded music. He put out two EPs on Manchester-based imprint Handsome Dad, a one-off single with Adult Jazz and self-released Temple Works EP; Whities also released a limited-edition white label of a Minor Science dub of one of his tracks.
