It was not until he was twenty-seven years old that Paganini embarked on the concert tours which made him the most talked-about violinist of his time. He gave up his permanent position at the court of Princess Élisa Baciocchi in Lucca in December 1809, and began by giving concerts in various towns in northern Italy. His triumphs in Milan in 1813 established his national reputation, and he finally gained international fame in 1828, on his first tour outside Italy. Of the six concertos he is currently known to have composed, he wrote nos. I and 2 for performance in Italy, the first probably in 1815–16, the second in 1826. …

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download  | Booklet, Front Cover | © Linn Records

March 4th 2018 marks the 90th birthday of one of the twenty-first century’s most influential and prolific composers: Samuel Adler. This three-disc boxed set provides a cohesive overview of his output and includes many premiere recordings. A pupil of both Paul Hindemith and Aaron Copland, Adler is a phenomenal symphonic writer (who, quite literally, wrote the book on orchestration) whose style merges twenty-first century ebullience with an almost classical economy and balance. The first two discs feature the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt under conductor Emily Freeman Brown performing the First and Second Symphonies, a dance suite for orchestra, plus three concertos: the Concerto for violin and orchestra, featuring Siwoo Kim, the award-winning violinist who originally premiered the work; the Concerto for woodwind quintet and orchestra; and the first Piano Concerto, featuring the prize-winning young pianist Michael Brown. The third disc features the highly talented young players from the Eastman School of Music alongside guitarist and fellow Eastman professor Nicholas Goluses. This is especially fitting since Adler taught at Eastman for nearly thirty years and these students represent the continuation of his prodigious legacy.

The Santa Fe Desert Chorale, under artistic director Joshua Habermann, offers beautiful and assured performances of a range of American choral works, ranging from 19th-century Shaker music to jazz, folk and classically inspired works.

Taking its title from Stephen Paulus’ a cappella choral piece, ‘The Road Home’ celebrates the diverse and ever-changing influences that make up American culture by featuring repertoire by immigrant and native-born Americans, ranging from mid-19th-century Shaker music to jazz, folk and classically inspired works by leading 21st-century choral composers. The professional Santa Fe Desert Chorale is one of the most distinguished American vocal ensembles.

“The variety certainly displayed the ensemble’s impressive versatility. Habermann consistently got vivid performances, introspective music elegantly colored and shaped, extrovert fare delivered with great pizzazz.” – Dallas Morning News

All around the world, critics cheered the SCO Wind Soloists’ previous album of Mozart Divertimenti: ‘superb in every way’ (Fanfare), ‘a joy from start to finish’ (Europadisc), ‘sparkles with joy and chuckles with good humour’ (BBC Radio 3 ‘Record Review’).

Continuing to explore the Harmoniemusik repertoire, the Wind Soloists’ new recording features youthful, entertaining and brilliant music by a young man who took Vienna by storm in the 1790s: Ludwig van Beethoven.

The underrated Octet is a technically challenging concert piece in the Mozart tradition, but with the flair and unpredictability of the young Beethoven.

In the Sextet, Beethoven exploits the differing characteristics of each instrument to great effect with the SCO’s legendary interplay on full display.

Another gem is the short but sweet Rondino, which is full of subtle details, exquisite melodies and exhilaratingly high-speed horn playing.

For the past 70 years, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (‘The SPO’) has played a leading role in enriching the cultural lives of Korea’s citizens. In 2005, under the inspirational leadership of Maestro Myung-Whun Chung, the orchestra was reborn and this set a new standard for orchestral music in Korea. The SPO performs a wide range of repertoire from Mozart to Messiaen and continues to shatter box office records. Indeed, in 2011 the SPO became Asia’s first orchestra to sign an exclusive worldwide ten-CD contract with the Deutsche Grammophon record label. Impressively, the first two albums that were released instantly went platinum.

Exploring the quintessence of musical folklore so dear to his heart, in the form of his still neglected ländler and waltzes, right up to the last notes of the Sonata in B flat on the eve of his death, Schubert takes us from the simplest language to the innermost reaches of the soul. One can hardly dream of a more appropriate pianist than Shani Diluka to guide us through these works and offer us an interpretation shifting between shadows and light, touching on the mystery of the invisible, as Novalis said. Here she performs some of the Viennese composer’s finest pieces.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download  | Front Cover | © Mexican Summer

Front Row Seat to Earth is Weyes Blood’s second full-length album for Mexican Summer, following 2014’s brilliant The Innocents. As with that album, here singer/songwriter Natalie Mering continues to refine her psychedelic folk-pop sound, placing less of an emphasis on experimentation and spotlighting her stunning voice and introspective, poetic lyrics. The album was co-produced by Mering and Chris Cohen, and like his solo albums on Captured Tracks, it nods toward vintage soft rock production, managing to sound highly detailed and sophisticated yet relaxed. This is Mering’s most direct-sounding album by far — the grandiose, billowing arrangements and echo-drenched tape manipulations present on previous Weyes Blood albums are largely absent here. It’s still somewhat spacy and ethereal, but it sounds significantly less trippy. It’s not stripped-down or minimalist, however; the songs slowly unfold and bloom with lush keyboards and horns, and they often flow past the five-minute mark. The songs all keep to a calm, unhurried pace, but stand-out “Do You Need My Love” has a slightly busier rhythm, driven into a hypnotic midsection by impressive drumming and Lennon-esque pianos. Mering’s singing has never sounded lovelier or more pristine than it does here, and her yearning lyrics are at the forefront of these elegant compositions. The lyrics are generally about the uneasiness of change and facing one’s fears — “Away Above” contains the lyric “I’ll bring your worst fears if you bring mine.” Mering laments heartbreak and hesitantly looks toward the future — on another of the album’s highlights, “Generation Why,” she sings “It’s not the past that scares me/Now what a great future this is gonna be.” The album concludes with “Front Row Seat,” a brief collage of distant pianos, eerie strings, and operatic vocals which hearkens back to Mering’s more abstract earlier work. ~ Paul Simpson

After seven years away from the recording studio, Wolf Parade have picked up where they left off, sounding confident and full-bodied on their fourth studio effort, 2017’s Cry Cry Cry. As before, Wolf Parade approach indie rock with the sense of drama of a prog rock band, reinforced by the operatic quaver of Spencer Krug’s vocal work and the grand ambitions of the keyboards by Krug and Dante DeCaro. Despite their hiatus, Wolf Parade sound fresh and invigorated on these 11 songs, with the healthy snap of Arlen Thompson’s drumming keeping the proceedings lively even when the group slinks into a languid mood on “Flies on the Sun” or aims for a moody effect on “Lazarus Online.” (DeCaro’s bass work is more subtle in the mix, but no less strong in execution.) While the group references a few of the major events that took place since Wolf Parade last made an album — the death of David Bowie on “Valley Boy” and the passing of Leonard Cohen just as Donald Trump was rising to power in “You’re Dreaming” — most of the time the group seems to be looking inward, albeit with an intelligence and sense of purpose that prevents the material from seeming solipsistic. Dan Boeckner’s guitar is often dwarfed in the mix by the keyboards, but he adds a crunchy texture that lends an added weight and heft to these songs. And the production by John Goodmanson is an ideal match for the material, giving these performances the right amount of gravity without making this music sound swollen or pompous. Feeling strong and fit after their layoff, Wolf Parade don’t sound like a band convinced they have something to prove on Cry Cry Cry — it quickly announces that they’re as capable and creative as ever, and the finished product is as strong as anything they’ve released to date.

Introducing the international debut Deutsche Grammophon orchestral album from leading French-Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the distinguished Philadelphia Orchestra. A powerful musical tribute to the mighty Leopold Stokowski (1882–1977), 35 years after his death, from the young conductor who now continues his legacy. Stokowski spent some of his most important and fruitful years in charge of the orchestra in Philadelphia, in a position that brought him some of his greatest accomplishments. Musical showmanship, free-thinking and a populist approach to contemporary music are characteristics of Stokowski’s distinguished conducting and recording career.

This new album focuses on Stravinsky’s daring, revolutionary and game-changing ballet score, The Rite of Spring – given its American premiere performance by Stokowski and his Philadelphia Orchestra, and a work that reaches its centenary milestone in 2013.

Plus a selection of popular Stokowski transcriptions, including the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor (J. S. Bach), as heard in its Stokowski version in Disney’s classic Mickey Mouse movie, Fantasia.

“…its quality will put it at the top of the heap…Nézet-Séguin has a keen sense of contour, of well-judged peaks and valleys, as well as a coloristic precision that reveals the individual nature of each moment. Repeated listenings uncover new things…as much as Nézet-Séguin keeps excitement under control, he saves his most savage outburst the way one plays a trump card. The timpani eruption that ushers in “The Naming of the Chosen One” is perhaps the most emphatic on record. So great is the detail I wonder if the engineers change microphone placement for different parts of the piece. Whatever. Never in my dreams did I think such great recorded sound could be captured in Verizon Hall.” (David Patrick Stearns, Philadelphia Inquirer)

Yundi Li is being groomed for superstardom. He’s got the looks, youth, and keyboard athleticism to fill that role, but on the basis of this all-Chopin disc (and his previous Chopin and Liszt recitals), he still lacks the interpretive maturity that translates into staying power. His B minor Scherzo, for example, comes off as excessively sectional, and its central section lacks poetry. Other works here fare better, but his attention appears focused on pianistic fluency and dazzling finger work, often at the expense of a full measure of emotional communication. The Impromptus, lovely as they are in places, tend to blandness. Li compensates for his lack of depth and spontaneity with a beautiful tone, remarkably even runs, and precise articulation at high speeds, attributes which should be sufficient for many. If you’re looking for the rhetorical, probing grandeur of an Arrau or the emotional directness of a Rubinstein you’ll look elsewhere. But if you’re in tune with Pollini’s detached, objective Chopin and enjoy hearing a skilled pianist perform impressive technical feats on the instrument, you’ll want this disc.

„Ah, youth. It’s youthful energy and enthusiasm that abound in Yundi Li’s performance of Chopin’s Scherzi and Impromptus. He flies with the greatest of ease over the keyboard, making an inspiring display of his technical abilities. Musically, he’s not bad either, if a little theatrical. In the faster outer sections of the Scherzi, he is fleet fingered and clear. In the Scherzo No. 2, he keeps the chords and figures of the opening section tight and short, making the contrast with the right-hand arpeggios stand out. Even though he plays the Scherzi for their theatrics, he still manages to find and bring out the melodic figures, even if they are only three or four notes long and buried in ornamental ruffles. Li handles the Impromptus more simply, without as much drama. Impromptu No. 2 is delicate and quiet in the outer sections, while he keeps the more forceful central section in proportion. In the coda, he brings out the melody in the left hand, allowing the listener to focus on that rather than the dazzling right hand, splendid as it is. All of this indicates that although it’s Li’s energy and technique that stand out in this Chopin, there is a chance that his technique and musicality will balance out as he matures.“ (Patsy Morita, AMG)

Sonny Landreth’s unique spin on guitar playing has made him legendary. He combines the slide with fretted notes; this finger picking technique helps him create a complex, multi-layered sound onstage. Along the way Landreth has continued to develop his vision and his musical voice, growing increasingly original and diverse, expanding from blues, zydeco, folk, country and jazz into increasingly category- blurring musical excursions. The album Recorded Live in Lafayette is a perfect showcase of Landreth’s talents and skills; disc one contains a full acoustic set and disc two his full electric set.

Whenever an artist plays a hometown show, there’s a little more juice in the air. Sonny Landreth’s Recorded Live in Lafayette was tracked at the Acadiana Center for the Arts, not far from the bars and clubs where the pioneering slide guitarist cut his teeth, and you can feel the crowd’s energy reflected in the music. Recorded over the course of three nights, the double live album features Landreth’s working trio of bassist David Ranson and drummer Brian Brignac, as well as keyboardist Steve Conn and guitarist Sam Broussard.

For most of the acoustic set, Landreth played the striking guitar that appears on the album cover. “It’s a Larry Pogreba ‘hubcap’ resonator,” he explains. The guitar was a gift from Mark Knopfler, who played a similar model on “Creole Angel” from Landreth’s South of I-10 album. “For these songs, it appealed to me because it was bright and had some air to the sound, and it compressed in a way I really like.”

Landreth has been releasing albums for more than 30 years, so he has a huge body of material to cull from. Recorded Live in Lafayette offers a definitive overview of both his amazing slide guitar and his inspired songwriting. Here—in his own words—are the stories behind the songs on this epic double album.

This remixed and expanded reissue of Soundgarden’s Ultramega OK is a long-planned “correction” of the legendary band’s Grammy®-nominated debut full-length. The album was originally recorded and released in 1988 on SST Records. While the band enjoyed working with the original producer, Drew Canulette, they soon realized they weren’t quite happy with the final mix. Thus, shortly after the album’s release, the band decided to remix the album for subsequent pressings. However, success intervened: the band rapidly scored a deal with A&M and began work on their major-label debut, Louder Than Love, and the Ultramega OK remix project fell by the wayside as Soundgarden climbed their way to (ultra)mega-stardom. In 2016, after worldwide success, a breakup, a reunion, and many albums and tours, the band finally acquired the original multi-track tapes to Ultramega OK and carved out time to dig into the remix. They handed the tapes over to longtime friend and engineer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Skin Yard), who worked with the band to create a fresh mix of the album that, for the band, ties up this persistent loose end and remedies the sound of their debut album. While they were at it, the band dug out six early versions of tracks that wound up on Ultramega OK. The songs were recorded in 1987 on 8-track tape by Jack Endino and Chris Hanzsek at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, and mixed by Jack Endino in 2016. These versions feature the band in raw, powerful form –sonically closer to the band’s Endino-recorded debut EP Screaming Life – and provide a fascinating window into the development of songs that eventually became staples of the band’s set. The six songs comprise what the band refers to as Ultramega EP, and they are included in this reissue. Hailed as grunge innovators, Soundgarden redefined rock music for a generation. In the ‘80s, the band – singer/guitarist Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Hiro Yamamoto, and drummer Matt Cameron – combined a punk ethos, brutal metal soundscapes, and Cornell’s ravenous roar to capture the attention of the masses. Jagged and ferocious, their music was deeply at odds with the synth-pop and hair metal which dominated the 80’s airwaves. Early indie releases, including seminal Screaming Life and Ultramega OK, quickly led to a dedicated indie following as the band toured on both sides of the Atlantic. Subsequent albums, including Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, and Down on the Upside, achieved multi-platinum sales and launched the band to international fame.

“The Following Mountain” is the seventh full length album from Samuel Tear, better known as Sam Amidon, a Vermont folk singer currently based in London. Created with producer Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Regina Spektor) and frequent collaborator Shahzad Ismaily, The Following Mountain represents a new approach for Sam Amidon, who shifts here from his previous norm of re-working traditional folk songs and presents nine wholly original compositions, with some lyrics drawing on traditional sources. The album features a rare guest appearance by drummer Milford Graves, known initially for his work in the 1960s with free jazz legends Albert Ayler and Sonny Sharrock.

“The Following Mountain” was made during two distinct recording sessions: an initial weekend in Brooklyn where Ismaily and Amidon brought in Graves, percussionist Juma Sultan (Jimi Hendrix), and saxophonist Sam Gendel for a heavily improvised session; followed by time in the studio over the summer in London, where Amidon worked with Leo Abrahams to shape and develop the songs.

Despite howling “I’m out of ideas” to open one of its tracks, The Following Mountain marks a notable change in approach for musical raconteur Sam Amidon. After establishing himself over the course of several albums as a reinterpreter of traditional folk tunes, this is his first record to consist entirely of original songs. He began the recording process with a largely improvised session with legendary jazz drummer Milford Graves, Jimi Hendrix percussionist Juma Sultan, and saxophonist Sam Gendel, along with frequent collaborator Shahzad Ismaily. He then met with producer Leo Abrahams (Regina Spektor, Paolo Nutini) to build songs out of segments of those recordings, with Amidon on occasion borrowing from public domain poems and songs for lyrics. (“Warren,” for example, contains lyrics from a 17th century poem by Thomas Flatman). By nature of its creative process, the album has a more meandering character than much of his prior material, but still renders Amidon’s ramshackle, instinctive-sounding style and elemental arrangements, which can make synthesizers and programming seem downright rustic in context (“Another Story Told”). Contributing to this impression are pre- and post-song studio clatter and commentary. “Juma Mountain” opens with the subtle hum of electronics before acoustic guitar, congas, bass, and eventually atmospheric electric guitar and drum kit set a sentimental mood as Amidon contemplates a moment in time. “Gendel in 5” is busier, with – as indicated by the title – complex time signatures and an extended saxophone solo dotted by harmonic passages built from voice, flutes, acoustic guitar, and synths. It maintains a reflective, almost haunting tone. The album does take a turn on the final track, “April,” which consists of the final nearly 12 minutes of the initial hour-long jam session. In the liner notes, Amidon wrote of the song, “It’s where we got to.” With the possible exception of that improvisation, by combining his appreciation of both free jazz and Appalachian folk music, Amidon seems to be creating a traditional folk for the future.

Recorded: April to June 1973

In 1973 Carlos Santana and The Santana Band were now one of the world’s most loved rock and fusion bands of all time. After several studio albums and the two collaboration albums with Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles Live and Love Devotion Surrender with John McLaughlin, the world was now buzzing around the energy that these superstars would lay down on vinyl with the soon to be rock/jazz/funk powerhouse Welcome.

Featuring a cross section of Santana classics such as “Going Home,” “Light of Life” and “When I Look Into Your Eyes,” plus the exotic rhythms and jams on workouts such as Santana and John McLaughlin’s “Flame – Sky,” and the stellar John Coltrane masterpiece interpretation” Welcome, Carlos Santana’s guitar was truly a voice heard around the musical world.

Along with the legendary Carlos Santana on guitar and vocal, he is joined with original Santana band mates Michael Shrieve on his dynamic drums, Doug Rauch on his prolific bass, Jose Areas on hard hitting percussion, plus the brilliant acid jazz superstar Leon Thomas on vocals, the celebrated Latin percussionist Armando Peraza, the legendary John McLaughlin on guitar, Joe Farrell on flute, and the stellar keyboard work of long time Santana associate Tom Coster.

The mark that the recording of Caravanserai and Love Devotion Surrender had left on Carlos Santana was monumental. The issue of Welcome, the band’s fifth album and its first with the new lineup, was a very ambitious affair and was regarded by traditional fans of Santana with even more strangeness than its two predecessors. However, issued as it was at the end of 1973, after Miles had won a Grammy for Bitches Brew and after Weather Report, Return to Forever, and Seventh House had begun to win audiences from the restless pool of rock fans, Santana began to attract the attention of critics as well as jazz fans seeking something outside of the soul-jazz and free jazz realms for sustenance. The vibe that carried over from the previously mentioned two albums plus the addition of vocalist Leon Thomas to the fold added a bluesy, tougher edge to the sound showcased on Caravanserai. The band’s hard root was comprised of Carlos, drummer Michael Shrieve, bassist Doug Rauch, and keyboard king Tom Coster. Add to this the percussion section of Armando Peraza and Chepito Areas as well as a second keyboard by Richard Kermode, and space was the place. The John Coltrane influence that inspired the Santana/John McLaughlin pairing on Love Devotion Surrender echoes here on “Going Home,” the album’s opening track, arranged by Coltrane’s widow, pianist and harpist Alice. The deeper jazz fusion/Latin funk edge is articulated on the track “Samba de Sausalito,” and to a much more accessible degree on “Love, Devotion & Surrender,” which features Thomas growling through the choruses and also features Wendy Haas, a keyboardist on Love Devotion Surrender who is enlisted here as a second vocalist. In fact, her pairing with Thomas on Shrieve’s “When I Look Into Your Eyes” is nothing less than beatific. McLaughlin makes a return appearance here on the stunningly beautiful guitar spiritual “Flame Sky.” Brazilian song diva Flora Purim is featured on “Yours Is the Light,” a gorgeous Afro-Brazilian workout that embraces Cuba son, samba, and soul-jazz. Welcome also marked the first appearance of French soprano saxophonist Jules Broussard on a Santana date. He would later collaborate with Carlos and Alice Coltrane on Illuminations. Ultimately, Welcome is a jazz record with rock elements, not a rock record that flirted with jazz and Latin musical forms. It is understandable why Santana punters would continue to be disenchanted, however. Welcome was merely ahead of its time as a musical journey and is one of the more enduring recordings the band ever made. This is a record that pushes the envelope even today and is one of the most inspired recordings in the voluminous Santana oeuvre. –AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

Santana is a Latin rock band. Founded in San Francisco during the late 1960s, it is based around the compositions and playing of lead guitarist and founder Carlos Santana. The band first came to widespread public attention when their performance of their Latin rock song “Soul Sacrifice” at Woodstock in 1969 provided a contrast to other acts on the bill. This exposure helped propel their first album, also named Santana, into a hit, followed in the next two years by the successful Abraxas and Santana III.
In the years that followed lineup changes were common. Carlos Santana’s increasing involvement with guru Sri Chinmoy took the band into more esoteric music, though never quite losing its initial Latin influence.
In 1998, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Carlos Santana, Jose Chepito Areas, David Brown, Gregg Rolie, Mike Carabello and Michael Shrieve being honored.
The band has earned eight Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, the latter all in 2000. Carlos also won Grammy Awards as a solo artist in 1989 and 2003. Santana has sold more than 90 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling groups of all time. In 2013, Santana announced a reunion of the classic line-up for a new record, predicting a 2014 release. They are tied with having the most won Grammys in one night.

Sylvie Courvoisier Trio – D’agala (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 54:09 minutes | 1,09 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: Q0buz | Front Cover | © Intakt Records

With her high-quality trio with Drew Gress and Kenny Wollesen, Sylvie Courvoisier presents her eleventh album on Intakt Records. In both her playing and her composition she shows neoclassical influences mixed with European improvised music and the experimental nonconformismof the New York downtown scene.

The nine pieces on D’AGALA are dedicated to people who admired and influenced Courvoisier. The title tune is for pianist Geri Allen, “one of three dedicatees who passed away as this June 2017 recording was in preparation – the others being guitarist John Abercrombie and French politician, women’s rights advocate and Holocaust survivor Simone Veil. Two pieces are for sculptors, Martin Puryear who merges organic and geometric forms, and Louise Bourgeois. On “Bourgeois’s Spiders,” Courvoisier is all over the piano – plucking or strumming strings inside, or playing with one hand inside and one on the keys, or rattling around on the metal frame. Sometimes the band sounds like a trio of percussionists; they’re that rhythmically acute”, writes Kevin Whitehead in the liner notes and adds: “Some pianists approach the instrument like it’s a cathedral. Sylvie Courvoisier sometimes treats it like a playground”.
