Murray Head – Say It Ain’t So (Remastered 2017) (1976/2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 40:08 minutes | 869 MB | Genre: Pop, Pop Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Editions Murray Head Music

If you like Pink Floyd, Neil Yong, Grateful Dead Etc., you will like this. It has a folk/blues acoustic sound. Murray Head is better known for his 80’s hit “One Night in Bangkok” which is a totally different style than this. This album was Murray Head’s biggest, and best shot at stardom. Sadly, it didn’t make as much of a splash as he’d likely hoped, and subsequent albums were more popular in the Francophonic world than in Britain or the U.S.A.

“Say It Ain’t So” is still a very strong record, with strong ballads and a uniquely 1975 rock sensibility, notably the David Gilmour-esque guitar playing on “Boy on the Bridge”. The centerpiece of the album is the title track, “Say It Ain’t So Joe”, as haunting a ballad as ever appeared in the 1970’s, featuring Murray’s alternatingly smooth, raspy, and finally agonized voice in a quietly escalating song about Josef Stalin.

Other strong tracks are the steel drum tinged “Boats Away”, “Boy on the Bridge”, “When I’m Yours”, and “Never Even Thought”. One track keeps this from being a five star record, the bizarre dixieland trombone filled “Someone’s Rocking My Dreamboat”. It breaks the continuity of the (otherwise almost early Peter Gabriel like) record, and just isn’t a very good song. Luckily for Murray’s reputation, it’s a cover song.

The liner notes state that most of the songs were written for a musical called “Atlantis”. The musical appears to have sunk into the ocean, but “Say It Ain’t So” remains. Murray Head had one of the best voices in rock. It’s sad that inept management kept him from having the standout career he deserves.

The music festival Les Transmusicales de Rennes wasn’t wrong in 2017: Nakhane is a great revelation that deserves to be in the spotlight! With a deep, enveloping, feline voice and a calm and always laughing charm straight down from Mount Olympus, Nakhane is quite a magician. One who growls, whispers and is completely comfortable no matter where he goes. Writer (Piggy Boy’s Blues, 2015), actor (The Wound, 2018), singer-songwriter-composer, multi-instrumentalist, Nakhane keeps on adding strings to his bow. Far removed from his first album Brave Confusion (2013) on which Ali Farka Touré’s influence was omnipresent, even in his former stage name – Nakhane Touré −, this second album is more intimate, with electro and soul coexisting side by side. With its slow tempos on sentimental interludes (Violent Measures, You Will Not Die), dazzling electro flashes filled with gleaming synthesisers (in the hit-worthy Clairvoyant) and 80s vibes (Interloper), You Will Not Die won’t fail to move the listener with its high sensuality, always on the verge of hatching.

It’s hardly a coincidence that Nathaniel Rateliff is at Stax. With his band The Night Sweats, the native of Denver has become a true ambassador of this muggy southern soul as it was practised on the infamous Memphis label at the end of the sixties. With his instrumental virtuosity, the soul of his songs, the ardour of their interpretation and the preaching of his organ, Tearing at the Seams glorifies the spirit of a vast heritage ranging from Otis Redding to Van Morrison, through Booker T. and the MG’s, Ray Charles and Creedence Clearwater Revival. As can be expected, the rhythmic turbine goes at a million miles an hour, the brass are as incandescent as possible and the voice of Reteliff is a furious rattle that is completely his own. This gang does not care to look in the rearview mirror despite assuming a rather nostalgic sound.

Nightwish has always stood for virtuoso perfection. They are able to evoke fantastic dream worlds, fade out time and space, and touch you deep inside with their symphonic majestic compositions. Two decades and three frontwomenin, Nightwish’s latest and most visceral ‘best of’ has a lot of ground to cover, so dedicating the first 24 minutes to The Greatest Show On Earth does seem like a self-indulgent use of precious minutes. Yet it does illustrate how far the greatest symphonic band on Middle-Earth have come. Working in a reverse chronological order, this epic fest of grandiose, orchestra-laden thrills and spills highlights the superlative power of Nightwish, from the drum-machine smasher Wish I Had An Angel and the heroic Ghost Love Score to the gothic masterpiece The Poet And The Pendulum. It’s a shame that their anaemic eponymous demo closes the compilation when a tour de force like the omitted The Phantom Of The Opera would provide the ideal final punch, but otherwise Decades is a pitch-perfect portfolio of world-class symphonic metal.

Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm is already a firebrand in the modern classical world, collaborating with contemporaries such as Peter Broderick, Ólafur Arnalds and Anne Müller. His unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, has won him many fans around the world. As announced by Drowned In Sound, he finally returns on October 10th 2011 with the successor to his highly acclaimed solo piano works Wintermusik and The Bells.

Having recorded his last album live in a large, reverberant church, Nils Frahm now invites you to put on your headphones and dive into a world of microscopic and delicate sounds – so intimate that you could be sitting beside him. Recorded late at night in the reflective solitude and silence of his studio in Berlin, Frahm uncovers a new sound and source of inspiration within these peaceful moments: ‘Originally I wanted to do my neighbours a favour by damping the sound of my piano. If I want to play piano during the quiet of the night, the only respectful way is by layering thick felt in front of the strings and using very gentle fingers. It was then that I discovered that my piano sounds beautiful with the damper.’ Captivated by this sonic exposition, he placed the microphones so deep inside the piano that they were almost touching the strings. This brought a host of external sounds to the recordings which most producers would try their hardest to hide: ‘I hear myself breathing and panting, the scraping sound of the piano’s action and the creaking of my wooden floorboards – all equally as loud as the music. The music becomes a contingency, a chance, an accident within all this rustling. My heart opens and I wonder what exactly it is that makes me feel so happy.’ FELT creates its own personal microcosm, offering a refuge of tender and honest beauty.

4 stars out of 5 — “FELT’s highlight is the nine-minute ‘More, whose dusky, undulating melody re-emerges transformed by electronic filters at its end.”

While a musician’s ability to overcome the temporary loss of a thumb certainly doesn’t match the achievements of the Paralympians last summer, there’s something similarly uplifting about the genesis of Nils Frahm’s latest, delicate album. Provoked by an unfortunate accident involving a bunk bed and gravity, Screws – named after the four pieces of metal doctors used to hasten the healing process – finds the increasingly acclaimed pianist inspired by his predicament to compose within his limitations rather than follow doctor’s advice and leave his instrument alone during his recovery.

The back-story is, arguably, unimportant: it’s likely only trained musicians would be aware of the hindrances he faced. In keeping with much of Frahm’s work to date, these are deceptively simple, minimalist sketches in which the personality of the piano – its timbre, the creak of its hammers – is of as much importance as the performer’s.

But these nine pieces – one for each finger, presumably, written and recorded over nine consecutive evenings – are meditative celebrations of his love for his instrument, one from which he (as he himself says) “pathetically” thought he might be separated.

They are, accordingly, full of a tender emotion that more often than not overcomes the fact that they’re sometimes closer to the New Age avenues explored by George Winston than, say, the work of Erik Satie. Frahm himself initially only deemed the collection worthy of a free download rather than a commercial release.

However, as with the latter composer’s Gymnopédies, the atmosphere they evoke is no less significant than their melodies, and there’s a gentle melancholy at the heart of the best tracks – like You, the album’s opener – that is impossible to ignore.

Re, too, is imbued with a sadness that lifts towards its end as his undamaged right hand sweeps briefly up his keyboard, while Me – enveloped in tape hiss – is at times so insubstantial as to be barely there. But, though these 28 minutes drift by almost imperceptibly, they’re evocative, intimate and surprisingly moving. Sometimes it’s about what we do with what we have rather than what we lack.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 48:58 minutes | 1,06 GB | Genre: Soul, Funk

By the late ’70s, Connors had gained a new audience that was perhaps unfamiliar with his earlier jazz efforts like Dark of Light and Love From the Sun. Later albums like Saturday Night Special, You Are My Starship, and Romantic Journey had Connors putting R&B in the mix. This 1979 album is the follow-up to the classic This Is Your Life. While that effort seemed to attain a good mix of intelligent R&B and jazz, Invitation finds the formula a little diluted. This does start off on a good foot. The first track “Your Love Is My Ecstasy” features spirited vocals by Al Johnson and great drumming. Ada Dyer, who’s also known as Miss Adaritha, handles the rest of the lead vocals. The ballads “Handle Me Gently” and the title track are good but lack a certain earthiness and charm inherent in Connors’ best work. In fact, Invitation seems to be hampered by lack of material and often comes off a little uninspired. “Disco Land” is the biggest misstep here. The track finds Connors jumping on the bandwagon a little too late and with a hackneyed production to boot. The instrumental “I Have a Dream” is better suited for Connors and features beautiful trumpet and flügelhorn solos from Eddie Henderson. The meditative “Beijo Partido” has good soprano sax work from Starship Orchestra member Ralph “Buzzy” Jones. While Invitation is too spotty to be called a classic, his fans will no doubt enjoy a few of the better tracks. ~ Jason Elias

Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds reissues and revives his debut album in form of a special remastered 10th Anniversary edition titled Eulogy For Evolution 2017. Following its initial release in 2007 and coinciding with Ólafur’s 30th birthday, label founder Robert Raths gifted the chance for this record to shine a second time.

Eulogy For Evolution is a journey from birth to death, transporting the listener through life itself. Originally written as a teenager, the record has now been restored with the help of his friends, remixed by Ólafur himself and remastered by Nils Frahm. The cover art was redesigned and enhanced by Torsten Posselt at FELD using the original photographs taken by Stuart Bailes during a trip to Ólafur’s home in Iceland in 2007.

To experience the record in the present day is not only to experience the past, but also the sheer timelessness and relevance of these compositions, and the ambition Ólafur has had from the very beginning. “Fast forward 10 years, our relationships and knowledge in sound have matured, but you can still hear this urgency in Óli’s songs that caught my ears to begin with”, states Robert Raths.

Very greedy Paul Lay who begins the year 2017 with not one but two albums that he publishes simultaneously, Alcazar Memories and The Party that he presents as follows: “I developed this repertoire as a sound illustration of cinematographic scenes that take place at a party. Joy, lightness, the unexpected. The excitement of meeting again. Each piece characterizes a character, a situation, or an exchange of looks, a dance, and many other movements. A party is also an opportunity to observe the game of masks: the ego of each, complex, shimmers differently depending on the situation, in order to obtain the support of the group. These moments of gathering refer us to our own identity, the multiple facets that constitute our personality, our image, our cracks, our repressions, our projections, our fantasies, confronting our reality to that of others. Following the 2014 Mikado album, Paul Lay wanted to deepen his compositional work with Clemens Van Der Feen and Dré Pallemaerts. A natural rhythm and powerful, subtle and delicate, always at the service of emotion and sensation. Hear this trio is pretty jubilant. The proposed complicity, the wealth of improvisations and the great musicality of the themes played, Lay sign here his most impressive record.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 02:30:55 minutes | 2,78 GB | Genre: Folk
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Legacy Recordings

Released five years after Warner’s last Paul Simon comp, the single-disc The Paul Simon Collection: On My Way, Don’t Know Where I’m Goin’, the double-disc The Essential Paul Simon is a full 17 tracks heftier than its predecessor and contains all but one of its 19 songs (MIA is the latter-day “Love,” which only hardcore fans will recognize as from You’re the One, and they’re not quite the market for this set anyway). It’s also slimmer than the 1993 box Paul Simon 1964/1993, which spanned three discs but also encompassed his ’60s recordings with Art Garfunkel, plus a single the duo recorded as Tom & Jerry, along with selections from his solo debut, The Paul Simon Songbook — it was ambitious, where this compilation is efficient, picking up after the parting of ways with Garfunkel and running straight through until 2006’s Surprise. The sequencing isn’t strictly chronological — some songs are shuffled around for effect, with “Still Crazy After All These Years” closing the first, while “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” is cleverly followed by the zydeco stomp “That Was Your Mother” — but it roughly divides into having the first disc devoted to the ’70s and early ’80s, the second devoted to Graceland and beyond. Some might argue that there’s too heavy of a Graceland presence here — a whopping six tracks, over half the album — but it is his biggest album and functions as a nice transition between his better-known ’70s hits and the more esoteric but frequently compelling work that he’s done since. And, unlike The Paul Simon Collection, The Essential Paul Simon is designed to introduce fellow travelers to the interesting work he’s done since Graceland, as the second disc emphasizes that quite greatly, and it does a good job of it, while also providing a good summary of his best-known (and much of his best) solo work. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz  | Time – 47:58 minutes | 532 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Booklet, Front Cover | © Laborie Jazz

With her new opus “Rainbow Shell”, pianist Perrine Mansuy resolutely embarks on a pop way, a western “dream pop”, following the footsteps of that tireless traveller, adventurous Katherine Mansfield. Always in search of light, the novelist hastened to live and write short forms, short stories for the most part, strong and seldom sentimental. Streaked with blues guitars and Rémy Decrouy’s samples, always supported by the percussions of other fellow traveller Jean-Luc Difraya, cellist Eric Longsworth’s arrival among the band colours the whole with new shades: fabulous sensitivity, romantic commitment?

Enhancing Perrine’s desire to let the primitive and cathartic inner song take over, Mathis Haug’s hoarse voice confirms this trend, thus recreating a dreamlike and intimate universe. When she sings and plays her keyboards, Perrine increases energy, like a shaman. She dares confront the unknown and ventures to discover what we are without always knowing it.

Behind the story being played, the familiar becomes strange, music passes through the appearances and takes us to the other side of the “Magic Mirror”, to a delicate and often thrilling universe. At other times, it dances with the wind and pirouettes with an uncommon energy like in this “Fly On”, following this sailor who embarks on the ocean, in search of the mermaids. The writing of some of the songs clings to childhood, to the magic of encounters, to the unbearable lightness of things. The words just float, settle, take on their proper meaning. These are fugitive moments of life, ridges that come up to the surface of everyday life. Wonderful beaches that the pianist offers us, with her multifaceted songs, a permanent reflexion of what continually turns from light to dark.

Like in “The Piano”, Jane Campion’s film, another famous New Zealander, an inner voice rises, a seabed piano, and becomes a melody to which the wind and the sea answer in echoes. With a desire for freedom and the spiritual, the pianist tirelessly asserts herself through the music played by her instrument, yet refusing the ghetto of phrases such as “jazzwoman” and “woman’s music”. After “Mandragore & Noyau de pêche”, “Délubies”, “Vertigo Song”, the musician has been able to gradually impose her style and this latest album, “Rainbow Shell”, is further proof of that.

This is an outstanding album from a gifted singer songwriter. Peter Henry Phillips has the ability to capture depth of emotion in a single line. His intonation and dynamic style comes through on every track on the album. This is the kind of album that I don’t just cover for the site, but gets added to my personal collection and steady rotation for years to come. Peter Henry Phillips arrives on the scene with The Origin, establishing himself as a songwriting force with a gesture toward literary lyricism and malleable melodies.

All told this is an exceptionally good album. It really should have been considered for 2015 album of the year. It’s that good. Fans of any of the bands mentioned above should really give Peter Henry Phillips a listen. I don’t think he’s going away in the industry anytime soon and I can’t wait to hear him live. He’s an extremely talented artist. He’s one of those gems we cover around here that make you say, “wow, I can’t believe we’re not hearing more about him.” Soon he’ll be on all the big shows, his sales will spike, and you’ll be able to tell your friends you heard him here first. Go out and get The Origin. It is an infinitely rewarding album.

Phronesis have built a formidable reputation over the last decade as one of the most powerful and energetic small ensembles on the European jazz scene. Known for their virtuosity, dynamism and telepathic group interplay, the trio have commanded impressive media attention and established a substantial fanbase on a global level. Following six critically acclaimed trio albums, the band have now completed their most ambitious recording to date with the release of The Behemoth. Consisting of ten arrangements and re-imaginings of compositions from their back catalogue by Julian Argüelles, this remarkable, vibrant new album featuring the Frankfurt Radio Big Band is rich in colour and bursting with spirit and creativity.

Julian Argüelles plays a pivotal role throughout this album, demonstrating his masterful ability as arranger and conductor, and also appearing as a soloist on Eger’s ‘Urban Control’. All three members of the trio have been long time admirers of Julian’s playing, writing and arranging and when an opportunity arose for them to collaborate, they all jumped at the chance. Likewise, the Frankfurt Radio Big Band have an impressive story, having been one of the key radio big bands in Europe for many years, collaborating with a plethora of international jazz artists . Tackling the music of Phronesis is no easy task for any large ensemble, but with Julian at the helm, they met the challenge with creative energy.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 40:44 minutes | 432 MB | Genre: Country

Pokey LaFarge makes original Midwestern music. With one foot deep in the heart of the American musical tradition and the other firmly planted in the present, he continually challenges the notion that tradition-bearers fail to push musical boundaries. An eclectic writer and performer, he incorporates elements of early jazz, ragtime, country blues, Western swing, and beyond, transcending the confines of genre to present a sound very much his own. Something in the Water follows on the heels of his last album, released on Jack White’s Third Man Records, but comes with an evolution in sound. Treated with a heavier dose of catchy rhythms and traditional drum kit percussion throughout, the 12 tracks on Something in the Water see LaFarge’s sound imbued with new life. Produced by kindred spirit Jimmy Sutton, Something in Water showcases Pokey LaFarge’s peerless gifts as a songwriter, performer, and entertainer, and further solidifies his place at the forefront of American music.

Some artists who evoke the styles of the past seem to have spent every waking moment of their adult lives struggling to sound as if they were born in a different decade. Pokey LaFarge, on the other hand, makes music that suggests he somehow passed through a wrinkle in time from 1929 to 2015, complete with his banjo in hand; LaFarge’s music never seems forced, but flows from him naturally with an easy grace, a playful insouciance, and a confidence in his talent that stops well short of arrogance. After jumping to the big leagues with his self-titled 2013 album released by Jack White’s Third Man label, LaFarge has ambled back to the independents; Something in the Water is his first album for Rounder, the venerable roots music label, but Something ranks with his best recorded work to date, maintaining the rootsy sway and swagger of his earlier albums but boasting stronger instrumental interplay and an extra dose of pep that makes the finished product especially winning. LaFarge not only sounds like a jazzbo from the age of ragtime, he writes like one, and from the vintage exotica of “Goodbye, Barcelona” and his celebration of Midwestern high life in “Knockin’ the Dust Off the Rust Belt Tonight” to his tribute to the women you don’t introduce to your mother on “Bad Girl” and the title cut, LaFarge pens songs with plenty of wit and a melodic sense that straddles the gap between vintage country and trad jazz. LaFarge is lucky enough to have a band just as committed to this sound as he is, and his accompanists help make Something in the Water pleasingly full bodied and dynamic. And producer Jimmy Sutton gives these sessions a live-in-the-studio tone that mimics the ambience of a vintage 78, but with modern-day clarity and detail. Pokey LaFarge delivers something old and new on Something in the Water, and no matter how much he reaches to the past for inspiration and influence, he’s able to make his music sound fresh and alive, and this is his strongest studio set to date. ~ Mark Deming

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz  | Time – 39:00 minutes | 393 MB | Genre: Soul, Blues
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Anti – Epitaph

This is a treasure. Recorded a year before the death of Roebuck “Pops” Staples, it’s our chance to hear a musical icon’s final work. Shortly before passing in 2000, Pops the patriarch of The Staple Singers told his daughter Mavis: “Don’t lose this.” She didn’t. Mavis, who recorded some of her own vocals for this release, enlisted Jeff Tweedy to overdub bass and help with production. Tweedy’s son Spencer plays drums. The result is vintage Pops the trademark tremolo guitar tone, spine-tingling vocals, and uplifting, socially conscious lyrics. Featuring several originals, two standards, and a live Bob Dylan tune, the entire album is strong; the backstory only adds to its poignancy.

Don’t Lose This is another positive result — a gift, really — from the creative partnership of Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy, an alliance that previously brought the Grammy-winning You Are Not Alone (2010) and One True Vine (2013). Prior to his December 2000 death, Pops Staples was in the process of making his fourth solo album. While enjoying a listen to its unfinished recordings, he said, as recalled by Mavis in a promotional clip, “Don’t lose that, don’t lose it.” Over a decade later, Mavis — with co-production, guitar, and bass from Tweedy, and drums from Tweedy’s son Spencer — fulfilled her promise. It can be strange to hear original and new elements at once, but nothing is as incongruous as the drum machine heard on Pops’ previous solo album (1994’s Father Father), and the message always gets through. As with any other recording involving Pops Staples, gospel, blues, and soul are indivisible, and the combination of his voice and tremolo — especially when supported by family — is like nothing else. The set begins with an original, a low-key and relaxed number where Pops sings of desperation and salvation: “Now my bad time is better than my good time used to be.” Mavis takes the lead for “Love on My Side,” a song that could have easily appeared on her Tweedy albums. The moments that stir the most are the ones where Pops’ work seems to have been left untouched, as on a simple, effective version of “Nobody’s Fault But Mine.” ~ Andy Kellman

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2 kHz  | Time – 35:30 minutes | 726 MB | Genre: Alternative, Indie
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Anti – Epitaph

Recorded with producer Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall), Mamba explores themes of self-inflicted isolation, working-class hopelessness, and the emotional damage of technology addiction. “Most of these new songs came from taking in what’s going on in the world today, and being afraid of the future we’re headed toward,” notes Garett van der Spek, the L.A.-based singer/songwriter behind Prism Tats.

With its sonic complexity and understated emotional depth, Mamba has a double meaning to its title. “It’s the name of a venomous snake, and in my hometown it’s a slang term for the biggest or meanest of something,” van der Spek points out.

As he explains, the word mamba ultimately embodies the sense of fear and defiance threaded throughout the record and especially evident in its epic title track. “The song is partly about letting go of that fear,” says van der Spek. “When I say ‘Give me the mamba,’ I mean ‘Give me the whole experience’: the good and the bad and everything else that might exist in between.”

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 01:16:31 minutes | 1,57 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Booklet, Front Cover | © Mirare

A fourth volume of Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonatas from the doyen of French harpsichordists, Pierre Hantaï, of whom Gramophone said: ‘an astonishing display of dexterity in which the harpsichord he uses (a 1999 copy of an anonymous Thuringian instrument of 1720) and the acoustic help in preserving total clarity. Even at maximum velocity (did Scarlatti and his pupil reach such speeds?) he manages to shape his phrases with micro-second dwellings.

It isn’t only the speedy sonatas that are impressive; Kk208 exemplifies his skilful shifts to either side of the pulse in giving the lines a natural ‘vocal’ quality. It also illuminates Kk185, 310, 199 and 162, in the last of which it’s more evident in the playful quicker ‘interludes’. The irresistible disc is splendidly annotated by Hantaï and beautifully packaged.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010.
