FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 40:10 minutes | 798 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Booklet, Front Cover | © ECM

One of the pleasures of Mathias Eick s Midwest album was hearing his vaulting trumpet supported by violin, an instrumental combination further developed on Ravensburg. The new violinist in Eicks ensemble is Hakon Aase, one of the up-and-coming players of the new Norwegian scene, whom attentive ECM listeners will already know from his work with Thomas Stronens group. The core Eick road band is further shored up by the addition of Helge Andreas Norbakken, who interacts excitingly with fellow drummer Torstein Lofthus. Eick is in great form as a writer on this showing, deploying driving rhythm at the bottom end of his music and soaring melody at the top in this series of pieces which add up to a kind of collective family portrait. Ravensburg was recorded at Oslos Rainbow Studio in June 2017 and produced by Manfred Eicher, and is issued on the eve of European tour.

Although he lived to be 97 years old, Hans Gál (1890-1987) didn’t exactly leave an indelible mark on European music. Still, the first decades of his career seemed to suggest a bright future: his works received enthusiastic support from Szell, Furtwängler, Strauss, Fritz Busch, and his notoriety grew steadily until Nazis came to power. Then there was the exile in Great Britain where he was interned during the war until the authorities understood, rather quickly in fact, he was anything but an enemy infiltrator! He went on to spend his late years in Edinburg where he taught at the university until he retired. His musical language remains rooted in Austro-Hungarian post-romantic tradition, while never foraying in any dodecaphonic nebula; it’s easy to imagine how much his work was neglected, particularly during the post-war years of lead with their imposed serialism, but the early 21st century finally saw his star shine once again in the firmament. Let’s therefore welcome the release of this album, which features his 1966 Concertino for Cello, followed by his Sonata and Suite for Solo Cello, both from 1982 – works from his ultimate maturity. All brought to life by the talented touch of Matthew Sharp, a disciple of Pergamenschikow and Jacqueline du Pré – and even of Galina Vishnevskaya, because he’s not only a talented cellist, but also a popular baritone!

Matthias Schorn, 31 year old Principal clarinettist of the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Austrian Minetti Quartett did not only record a special and popular coupling of Mozart’s and Brahms’ often played clarinet quintets, but there is also a third piece, „Invention“ by the Austrian composer Balduin Sulzer (*1932), which is also dedicated to the artists – a World Premiere.

Finally two young, famous Austrian artists are working together first time on this album and are showing a typical Austrian sound, swing and rhythm which suites those quintets more than anything else. (On the way to the musical Olymp, was the conclusion of the die Oberösterreichischen Nachrichten / News after a concert with the artrists on 16th Januar 2013).

With these three sonatas for piano and violin, Baptiste Lopez and Maude Gratton give us an overview of fifteen years in Beethoven’s life; the joie de vivre of the impetuous young composer, still strongly influenced by Classical forms, gradually gives way to a violent aesthetic break, the eccentricity of which was decried by contemporary critics. If, in Beethoven’s view, music confronts humanity with the difficulties of our condition, it also enables us to overcome them; the composer himself transcended his battle against deafness by finding in it the profundity of a creative force.

Born in 1980, Baptiste Lopez studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris in the class of Jean-Jacques Kantorow, obtaining his diploma in 2005. Baptiste joined the Gaudi Quartet in 2003, where he played first violin between 2006 and 2008, and he is regularly invited to play with prestigious ensembles, such as the Collegium Vocale, l’Orchestre des Champs Elysées and l’Opera National de Paris. Baptiste is currently first violin of the ensemble ‘Le Banquet Céleste’, under the direction of the counter tenor, Damien Guillon, and first violin of the Edding Quartet since it’s formation in 2007.

Following in the footsteps of Mozart and Haydn, George Onslow invented a middle way between the French and German heritages. Although he was nicknamed ‘the French Beethoven’, Maude Gratton and Emmanuel Jacques give us the opportunity, in these three sonatas for piano and cello, the opportunity to discover the true personality of this composer whose music, with its highly individual colours, combines very operatic lyricism and theatricality, purely French elegance, rhythmic vitality, and dazzling virtuosity..

Why yes indeed, this is a very recent recording of Debussy by Maurizio Pollini (with his own son Daniele at his side for En blanc et en noir), made in late 2016 in Munich’s sumptuous Herkulesaal. In it, the old lion of the piano unfurls for us the sumptuous and enigmatic musical tapestry of the Second Book of Debussy’s Preludes, finished in 1912: a superlatively delicate pattern, more sketched and suggested than really followed, the pianist being enjoined not to “overdo it”. Maurizio Pollini, 74 when the recording was made, can measure his performance out perfectly, and knows how to give the impression that the music is being written and improvised as he plays. And the album closes with En blanc et en noir for two pianos, of which Debussy wrote in 1915: “I have suffered greatly from the long drought imposed upon my brain by the war”; after months of silence, and his work editing Chopin, he entered a period of fevered creativity which continued with the two Books of the Études and the final sonatas. First entitled “Caprices en blanc et noir”, the three pieces of En blanc et noir refer neatly to the instrument’s keys and, as Debussy writes in 1916, “they aim to draw their colour, their emotion, from the simple piano, like Velasquez’s greys”. Grey, the fruit of the meeting of black and white…

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Booklet, Front Cover | © Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Following the success of Recomposed by Max Richter, DG will release a Version 2 of the album. The new edition will come with new artwork and booklet incl. brand new remixes, shadows and the film that was shot in Berlin in December, that some of you experienced on site.

The album features 5 new tracks, so called ‘shadows which are electronic landscapes that were made for a live performance of the work with accompanying visual material made by the Danish game designers DarkMatters. He and Max developed these pieces to intercut with the written orchestral material, and to illuminate the abstract visual world of the images.

„Antonio Vivaldi’s Le Quattro Stagioni is one of the most beloved works in Baroque music, and even the most casual listener can recognize certain passages of Spring or Winter from frequent use in television commercials and films. Yet if these concertos have grown a little too familiar to experienced classical fans, Max Richter has disassembled them and fashioned a new composition from the deconstructed pieces. Using post-minimalist procedures to extract fertile fragments and reshape the materials into new music, Richter has created an album that speaks to a generation familiar with remixes, sampling, and sound collages, though his method transcends the manipulation of prerecorded music.“

„Richter has actually rescored the Four Seasons and given the movements of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter thorough makeovers that vary substantially from the originals. The new material is suggestive of a dream state, where drifting phrases and recombined textures blur into walls of sound, only to re-emerge with stark clarity and poignant immediacy. Violinist Daniel Hope is the brilliant soloist in these freshly elaborated pieces, and the Konzerthaus Kammerorchester Berlin is conducted with control and assurance by André de Ridder, so Richter’s carefully calculated effects are handled with precision and subtlety. Deutsche Grammophon’s stellar reproduction captures the music with great depth, breadth, and spaciousness, so everything Richter and de Ridder intended to be heard comes across.“ (Blair Sanderson)

Born 16 December 1923, today Menahem Pressler is, without a shadow of a doubt, the king of pianists, just as Mieczysław Horszowski was in the 1980s. Founder of the Beaux-Arts Trio, great and much-overlooked performer of French music, in his thirties he laid down some of the greatest recordings of Debussy (La Boîte à joujoux, Estampes, Suite bergamasque, Arabesques, La plus que lente, Rêverie) of the 1950s, for the American label MGM Records (but he also made several LPs dedicated to Prokofiev which are now completely forgotten, and the Histoires by Jacques Ibert…). Today, for Deutsche Grammophon, he has cast his mind back to that time when, standing on American soil, everything still lay ahead of him; and he has written a beautiful programme, largely centred around Debussy with the composer’s greatest hits (Arabesques, Clair de lunefrom the Suite bergamasque, several Préludes from Livre I such as La fille aux cheveux de lin), finishing with Fauré (Barcarolle No. 6) and finally Ravel ( Pavane pour une infante défunte, Oiseaux tristes). Pressler is keeping alive another piano tradition, with his sound, his sense of style, and quite simply his spirit. His Clair de lune is full of this spirit, without ever falling into mawkishness, or losing its tone of softly-spoken confidence. But for pity’s sake, Universal Music: re-release all of Pressler’s solo pieces for MGM Records. Bringing back this inestimable and now-completely-inaccessible legacy would be a truly fitting tribute to this great artist.

If the soprano Nuria Rial and the composer Bernat Vivancos feel an affinity with the legendary violoncellist Pablo Casals, it is not just because all three hail from Catalonia. Casals, who was obliged to flee his native country following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, ended each of the concerts that he gave in exile by playing El Cant dels Ocells (The Song of the Birds). Bernat Vivancos has arranged it especially for Nuria Rial and the eight cellists of the Sinfonie orchester Basel. In 2013 a violoncello octet was formed from the violoncello section of the Sinfonieorchester Basel that plays not only tangos and cinema classics but also commissioned works written specially for this unusual formation. Bernat Vivancos has dedicated Vocal Ice to Nuria Rial and the Cello Octet of the Sinfonieorchester Basel. Piazzolla’s suite The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires dates from 1970 and is scored for strings, piano, electric guitar and bandoneon. As its name implies, it is a counterpart to Vivaldi’s famous violin concertos here relocated to the southern hemisphere or, to be more exact, to Buenos Aires. Borrowings from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons extend beyond the work’s title, for Piazzolla ends his Latin American Summer with a quotation from Vivaldi’s Winter. To date there have been countless arrangements of The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, including one for eight violoncellos prepared by the British composer and violoncellist James Barralet in 2013. Piazzolla himself often performed the work with his various bands, rewriting it to suit the changing live conditions. Arguably the best-known composition by Villa-Lobos is the fifth Bachianas Brasileiras, which is notable for its use of dissonant suspensions reminiscent of Bach. In the first movement, written 1938, the soprano begins by performing a wordless vocalise to the accompaniment of four doubled violoncello lines. The emotionally charged middle section is a setting of a poem by Ruth Valadares Corrêa. At the end her humming suggests a senseof yearning. The second movement, with its hammering dance rythm, was not added until 1945.

Late Canadian jazz musician Rob McConnell’s talents as a bandleader, arranger and trombonist are spotlighted on the Juno Award-winning Present Perfect. Notably, on the standard Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, he plays an adventurously off-kilter lead-in to the melody and then delivers a brilliant valve trombone solo. McConnell and his 22-piece brass band (including rhythm and reed sections) recorded this album in 1979 in Toronto and mixed it in Germany.

In 1968 McConnell returned to Toronto and founded a 15 piece brass band with rhythm section. He named it Boss Brass, keeping the name when he added a 5 piece reed section to the band in 1971. At first, McConnell arranged pop hits for Boss Brass, but as time went on the repertoire became more and more jazzy. Through their recordings, the band won international acclaim. However, they had never toured outside of Canada, so this 1979 MPS production took place in a studio in Toronto and was later mixed at MPS’s studio in Villingen, Germany. McConnell is lauded as a bandleader and arranger; on “Present Perfect” he shows himself to be a superb trombonist. On “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”, he plays an adventurously off-kilter lead-in to the melody, and then delivers a brilliant valve trombone solo. In 1988, after 20 years with Boss Brass, he accepted a teaching job in California, but returned to Toronto a year later and re-formed the band.

The Boss Brass has always featured some of the finest jazz-oriented session players from Toronto, Canada. Valve trombonist Rob McConnell’s swinging arrangements give the orchestra its own personality, as can be heard on this obscure Pausa LP, which was originally put out by the European MPS label. The band performs fresh versions of three swing-era standards (including “You Took Advantage of Me”), a lesser-known tune, and a couple of McConnell originals, including “The Waltz I Blew for You.” The key soloists include trumpeters Guido Basso and Sam Noto, altoists Jerry Toth and Moe Koffman, Rick Wilkins and Eugene Amaro on tenors, guitarist Ed Bickert, and McConnell (who is featured on “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”). Worth searching for, as are virtually all of the recordings by this very consistent big band.

Award-winning Trombonist-arranger-composer Rob McConnell and his Boss Brass big band was a fixture on the Canadian jazz scene. The group was composed of Canada’s premiere jazz musicians, and many of their over two dozen albums have become collectors’ items for big band enthusiasts world-wide. Tribute was the second of three albums released by MPS.

The album contains the compositions of six major musicians, all of whom “…were taken from us in the prime of their lives and careers” (McConnell). Alto sax great Cannonball Adderley’s Things Are Getting Better is a moderate-swinging gem that’s gotta make you feel good. Moe Koffman’s alto strolls out in front before taking a blistering double-time run. Lauded for his recordings on Impulse and Verve records as well as his arrangements for the likes of Bill Evans and Stan Getz, Gary McFarland stood as one of the most important arranger-composers of the 1960’s. His Blue Hodge slow-walks the blues over a richly-laid chordal carpet and sensitive tenor sax and piano solos. Trombone virtuoso Frank Rosolino’s Blue Daniel naturally features trombonists McConnell and Ian McDougall. Rosolino would have been pleased. Trumpeter Blue Mitchell was an integral part of one of jazz legend Horace Silver’s greatest groups. Mitchell transformed Silver’s contemplative Peace into the up-tempo trumpet romp Blue Silver. One of McConnell’s favorite compositions, Bill Evan’s ballad My Bells rings out with beautiful harmonies and a graceful piano solo. Dave Brubeck cohort Paul Desmond’s Wendy features luxurious harmonies and Jerry Toth’s sumptuous alto sax solo. A big band treat with insightful arrangements of compositions from six great jazzmen.

Robert Rich has helped define ambient and electronic music, with over 40 albums across four decades. “The Biode” is his latest studio album. This is a surrealist electronic journey through the microbiome. Exploding neurons reassemble to build a metamind. If an anthill could talk, what would it say? What would music sound like if we collaborated with fungi? We are not alone in this fractal universe.

We imagine ourselves to be individuals, as if our genome defines us. In fact, we’re each a collective, a network of organisms, with our unique microbiome of bacteria, viruses, fungi, organelles. Some work in harmony, some work in discord, but that shifting collective defines each individual in a blurry but more complete way. Let’s call it the Biode, a biomic node, the nexus or gathering place where a community of organisms combines to become a unit of individuality or consciousness. Even the mitochondria that power our cells have their own separate DNA, perhaps ancestors of a virus that permeated the cell walls of an early eukaryote. Like those primitive cells, our skin is a porous membrane, a gatekeeper to let friends in, shun enemies, breathe and slough off waste. What we consume becomes part of us. What we breathe becomes part of us. Our boundaries are fuzzy. Although we think of our consciousness as a continuous stream of self, it too is a system of interacting systems. We can view each neuron as an organism, too simple to know the thoughts that we are thinking. Perhaps an anthill thinks while the ants send their signals. Perhaps a forest thinks while the mycorrhizome interconnects with bacteria, nutrients and rootlets. Perhaps the Earth thinks, as its skin shimmers. Maybe we can learn how to communicate with these systems, to regard them as minds, to see ourselves as systems like them. Perhaps that will mark a new stage in mind’s evolution.

Ronnie Kole is now one of America’s most legendary pianists and entertainers whose devotion to New Orleans is well documented with his induction into the New Orleans Musical Legends Park. His love-affair with the city’s music is longstanding, as evidenced by this 1971 trio recording New Orleans Today.

Jazz pianist Ronnie Kole is a class act and consummate performer who is popular in both his own country and overseas. The New Orleans-based musician spends much time abroad in Europe and Asia, where his smooth sound and elegant persona lend themselves to refined venues and guest appearances with symphony orchestras. Kole is a piano man’s piano man, admired by many top stars in the business, from Harry Connick Jr. to Allen Toussaint.

Born in Chicago, Kole was afflicted with heart trouble as a child, which landed him in a school for the handicapped. He received much encouragement there from the celebrities who made a point to visit. In return, Kole has become very involved in charitable and civic organizations in his professional career, such as the Easter Seal Society and the American Heart Association. He sits on more boards than there are ivory keys on the piano, and helped organize both the New Orleans Jazz Festival and the French Quarter Festival, and has made numerous appearances at both venues.

A protégé of Al Hirt, Kole began his professional career on television, gaining exposure on the Johnny Carson Show. After a stint in Las Vegas, he followed Hirt to New Orleans. Kole honed his act in Hirt’s club on Bourbon Street, before opening his own club, Kole’s Korner, which, along with Hirt and Pete Fountain’s clubs, became a top venue to hear traditional jazz. The musician has received every conceivable award his adopted city has to offer, from a Lifetime Achievement Award to induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He has played for presidents and the Pope, and has performed in cities all over the world.

This new release features music composed and arranged by legendary jazz pianist Ronny Johansson. In his liner notes, he writes to his listeners: “Hi, I took a time out from my trio to celebrate my 75th birthday with a recording in a new setting. I found guitarist Rolf Jardemark, a new acquaintance for me and he really made justice to my selected songs. Matz Nilsson on bass and Michael Andersson, drums and percussion, I knew and played with already in the eighties. We went into the world famous Nilento Studio, run by master Lars Nilsson. He gave us a fantastic sound and everything went smoothly with first takes only. I’m very happy and I’m sure you will be too, so just enjoy!” Ronny Johansson made his jazz debut in 1961 in Uppsala, where he grew up. Afterward, he went on to play with musicians like Bo Sylven, Lars Gullin, Rolf Ericson, Art Farmer, and Gilbert Holmstrom’s group Mount Everest. The Ronny Johnasson Trio was formed in 1995 and has released six albums since 2002.

“Half-Light” is the debut album from Rostam Batmanglij, who is known for his work with Vampire Weekend and produced each of their three albums. The kaleidoscopic album features fifteen songs written, produced, and performed by Rostam in his Los Angeles home studio. All in all, Half-Light makes it apparent just how much of what was captivating about Vampire Weekend came from Batmanglij, solidifying the newly independent musician as a collaborator artists from multiple genres should–and do–want to work with.

In need of Vampire Weekend, that have been quiet since Modern Vampires Of The Cityreleased in 2013? Rostam Batmanglij is there to assuage the hunger of the fans of the New-Yorkers—of which he drove the keyboards and, most of all, produced three albums! Because if Ezra Koenig was the band’s showcase, Batmanglij was its most active and crazy musical brain. But since his tweet from January 26, 2016, the entire world knows that the Washington born man of Iranian origin has left the ship. Parallel to Vampire Weekend, Rostam Batmanglij had never stopped to work here and there, notably to compose film scores with his brother Zal. He has also formed the duo Discovery with Ra Ra Riot’s Wesley Miles. And with Hamilton Leithauser from Walkmen, he recorded the beautiful album I Had a Dream That You Were Mine. He even sat many times behind the console to produce people from diverse backgrounds like Cass McCombs, Frank Ocean, Haim, Declan McKenna, the wacko rappers Das Racist, Carly Rae Jepsen and Solange Knowles! But with Half-Light, Batmanglij, who dropped anchor in Los Angeles in 2014, pens his most personal album, a sort of outcome of all his previous works. We’ll logically think of Vampire Weekend but also of the nebulous Animal Collective/Panda Bear and of interbreeding à la Paul Simon. His psychedelic electro pop is run through by diverse sounds coming from India and the East. Between two drum machines and a guitar riff, you’ll notice some sitar, cello, table, and even some violin… On this multicolored sonic flying carpet that he drives with his fairy fingers, Rostam makes your hearing and senses capsize. And it’s rather enjoyable.

“Good Karma” is the tenth studio album by Swedish pop rock duo Roxette. 30 years after their debut and 60 million records later, Roxette are back with their 10th studio album “Good Karma”. Having completed a massive 2015 tour schedule playing to audiences all around the world the band have returned to the studio producing an album that proves why they were on of the most successful bands of the 80s and 90s. The album was a commercial success upon release.

Following the comeback Charm School by five years, Good Karma finds Roxette in a fairly subdued mood. This isn’t to say the duo avoids hooks, dynamics, or even faster beats. All three surface on the record’s title track and Roxette often return to a steady electronic pulse, sometimes honing it with enough precision to turn it into a neo-disco trifle (“This One”), sometimes polishing it so it’s sleek and urban in a manner not dissimilar to Ellie Goulding (“Some Other Summer”); they also play around with jagged rhythms, hiccupping singing, and vocoders on “20 bpm,” which proceeds at a tempo just slightly faster than its billing. Despite the welcome quickening of the tempo, most of Good Karma plays like big, polished power ballads, possibly because these kinds of tunes do dominate the record. Even if the scale didn’t tip toward the slow ones, the album would still feel like it was soft because Roxette deliberately excise the fizziness that fueled their big hits all in a conscious attempt to play toward their middle age. In that regard, Good Karma is a success – it’s a mature Roxette album that doesn’t disavow their past – but it’s hard not to miss the bubblegum Euro style of Look Sharp!
