My Politic – 12 Kinds Of Lost (2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 50:28 minutes | 959 MB | Genre: Folk

My Politic is making their first ever studio album “12 Kinds of Lost” at the Sound Emporium in Nashville TN. With a mix of Folk, americana, bluegrass, country, blues and roots music it promises to be their most eclectic effort to date. Appalachian Americana band out of Missouri debuts strongly on their first studio album. Every song hits home in a different way, and they manage to avoid the bro-country laundry list tropes that seem to plague even the most traditional artists to grace the radio waves.

12 Kinds of Lost consists of storytelling not seen very often in Country music. They join Country and Folk music to make a work of art that everyone will want to hear.

While the majority of the songs are slow ballads, there is still a sprinkling of uptempo songs throughout the album. Every song tells a story. Their songs are deep, dark, and full hard truths on reality. They make sure to mention just about every hard topic imaginable. “Bored Young Ghost” is a song about being or feeling stuck and empty. “When I die here, my ghost will be as bored as I am.” This song will speak to a lot of people because it speaks the truth about how many people feel at some point in their lives. “Only Human” describes the feeling of being depressed and growing apart from those you love. “I wonder if I’ll ever get a chance to make it right.” So many people these days struggle with depression that I believe fans will find that they can relate to this song for many reasons. “Devil’s Playground” again speaks of the world we live in today. We live in a time of religious growth, that is growing parallel with society’s efforts to deal with rises in drug use and abuse. The songs were beautifully co-written by the members of the band. My Politics is made up of Kaston Guffey, Nick Pankey, Wilson Conroy, Will Cafaro, Jen Starsinic, and John Wood. Guffey and Pankey met in Missouri at a young age and became My Politics in 2006. They moved to New England for a while before they found their home in Nashville. Their house has become a staple of sorts for other musicians passing by, and is coined the Mad Valley Lodge. This is not just a band, it seems to be that they have become a family. They tell stories that are hard to hear, but true to the core of people around the world. They don’t hold back knowing that there are many people out there that can relate in some shape or form.

12 Kinds of Lost captures the dark truth of the world we live in. People from all walks of life will hear these songs and find that they can relate in one way or another. It was so good I found myself wanting to continue to listen over and over. The songs speak for themselves. I encourage everyone to listen and enjoy the fantastic tracks found on 12 Kinds of Lost.

Nathan Davis is an American hard bop jazz multi-instrumentalist who plays the tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, bass clarinet and flute. He is one of the great balladeers of modern jazz. Nathan Davis spent some time living and working in Europe in the mid-’60s before returning to the United States to serve in jazz education. His recordings as a leader have been hard to find, so this 1965 studio session will be a welcome discovery for collectors who can find it.

This album features trumpeter Carmell Jones, pianist Francy Boland and drummer Kenny Clarke. Although the arrangements are equally challenging, things seem looser on this session, suggesting that there was more time to rehearse, though that is unlikely, since Jones was flown in especially for this date. The Coltrane influence is again apparent in the ballad “While Children Sleep.” It would be easy to imagine Art Blakey tackling the furious “Train of Thought”. Davis switches to flute for a haunting take of Jerome Kern’s “Yesterdays”. This valuable music was reissued in Europe by Motor Music in 1998, though it may very well have already lapsed again from print; it is well-worth investigating.

Nathan East, America’s preeminent bassist, after four decades performing with some of the biggest names in music, releases his first-ever solo record. The album features appearances by many of Nathan’s friends and past collaborators including Sara Bareilles, Eric Clapton, Michael McDonald, and Stevie Wonder. The album epitomizes Nathan’s time as a go-to player in the funk, soul and jazz world. “Daft Funk,” Nathan’s ode to the Grammy-winning album he helped record with Daft Punk, is the album’s first single and has reached #3 on the Billboard smooth jazz charts.

When Daft Punk went to make Random Access Memories, the seeking of Nathan East was one of the smartest moves they made. East provided basslines on nine of the album’s songs, including “Get Lucky,” a number two Hot 100 hit. The album won the Grammy for Album of the Year and shined a little mainstream light on him as well as several other unsung session musicians who have been active for decades with little recognition. There’s a nod here to the French duo on the smooth disco-funk tune “Daft Funk,” but otherwise, East’s first solo album plays it straight to those who have avidly followed the musician’s career, from his earliest session work in the late ’70s through his albums with modern jazz group Fourplay. East calls upon a large cast of fellow session veterans, as well as several stars who have benefited from his recorded and live work. Unsurprisingly, this is a loose, superbly played set with the feel of a celebration. It kicks into full gear with a rollicking instrumental version of Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke,” on which East’s bass serves as lead. Later on, Stevie himself provides a lead — on harmonica — throughout a relaxed version of his “Overjoyed.” Van Morrison’s “Moondance,” featuring Michael McDonald, begins subtly but quickly switches into a romp that involves saxophonist Tom Scott and trumpeter Chuck Findley; McDonald is so energized at one point that his wailing sounds more like that of Arthur Brown than that of Morrison. Cleverly, that song is trailed by a Sara Bareilles-fronted “I Can Let Go Now,” a song written by McDonald that originally appeared on his own solo debut. Eric Clapton, who has utilized East on the road and in hits such as “Tears in Heaven” and “Change the World,” helps revisit Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” with subtle electric lines, while East doubles — rather impressively! — on lead vocal. A lot of other notable musicians are involved here, including Bob James and Chuck Loeb (two of East’s Fourplay partners), Ray Parker, Jr., Vinnie Colauita, David Paich, Paulinho Da Costa, and drummer Ricky Lawson, who plays on most of the cuts and passed away in December 2013. ~ Andy Kellman

A Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and guitarist who blends good old rock & roll with a bit of country. His distinctive writing, expressive vocals and fiery guitar playing drew immediate attention in and beyond his Southern California home. Critics compared him to Bob Dylan — not at all unfavorably. Spirited, rough-edged, raw and passionate, yet eloquent and impeccably crafted, these 12 tracks confirm that Street-West is back and ready to begin that journey with an explosive liftoff.

A Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and guitarist who blends good old rock & roll with a bit of country, Nathaniel Street-West was born in a cabin in the Sierra foothills but was raised all over America. This upbringing might explain the many American flavors in his music but also the independent attitude of Street-West. While the scenery and friends were always changing, his trusty guitar was always with him and the young musician spent countless hours practicing. He was admitted at age 15 to the Musicians Institute in Hollywood and spent his late teens releasing a series of albums that drew praise from those who heard them, which was unfortunately very few. Always one to look forward instead of backward, he decided in 2005 to attempt a more ambitious project. A longtime fan of Bob Dylan’s Time Out of Mind, he contacted the album’s engineer, Mark Howard, hoping he would lend a hand. After listening to the 57 songs Street-West had sent him, Howard accepted the offer and became the album’s producer. Friends of Howard’s like Alanis Morissette’s keyboardist Zack Ray and legendary drummer Jim Keltner were brought in for recording sessions, and by the beginning of 2006, the album was completed. Witness appeared in April of that year on the Puffin Records label. Health concerns sidelined the artist after the release of Witness and, although he continued to write and record, he would not release another album until 2017. Blue Country (also on Puffin) featured his signature storytelling style over 12 tracks that were inspired by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Muddy Waters, Lead Belly, and other blues and jazz legends.

Following on from the success of their brilliant debut record ‘Permanent Rainbow’, Watford punks Nervus are back in 2018 to bring you the new highly anticipated follow up ‘Everything Dies’. Produced by Bob Cooper (Citizen, Nai Harvest, Kamikaze Girls) and Em Foster from the band, Everything Dies weaves a tapestry of deeply personal, heartfelt lyrics and themes of transition and acceptance, bristling with ten captivating tracks of anthemic pop-tinged, emotive melodic punk rock, that expand on the bands horizons without compromising on their original ideals.

It isn’t often that a band changes many people’s perceptions and approaches to alternative music. But this is what Watford-quintet Nervus did with their debut record, Permanent Rainbow in 2016. So how do the band top such a ground-breaking record? Simply come out with an absolutely stellar second album. This time around, however, Nervus are slightly more aggressive and most certainly more direct. With the words of vocalist Em Foster, who came out as a non-binary trans woman, acting as the backbone of the record, Everything Dies delivers a real gut punch, but with a tender touch. Even though there is so much to be said for Foster’s lyrics and vocals, there are some real solid grooves throughout the record. The delicate twinkle of ‘Recycled Air’ is nicely complimented by the straight up rock riff in ‘Sick Sad World’. Lyrically, it may seem like Foster has a pessimistic tone, with the odd “woah” thrown in for good measure, but the subject matter of which she is speaking is not sugar-coated and her observations are transparent and upfront. But for all its strengths there are down points to the record. Mainly that some of the records strongest songs, namely ‘It Follows’ and ‘The Way Back’, have been out for a while now that some of the other tracks fall a bit flat in comparison. Having said that, there is a simplicity to some of what the band produce, and it’s that formula which seems to work for the four-piece. It’s the simplicity which gives Nervus’ music a sense of vulnerability, and that is an element which people are sure to hook on to and connect with.

Along with his work as a lead artist, Hussle has previously collaborated with a veritable who’s-who of contemporary hip hop, including Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Rick Ross, YG, Ty Dolla Sign, Meek Mill, DJ Mustard, Young Thug and many more. As if his musical career and role as label boss weren’t enough, Hussle is also successful entrepreneur. “Victory” Lap is technically Nipsey Hussle’s debut album, but the Los Angeles rapper has been consistently dropping music for over a decade now. Since releasing his first mixtape Slauson Boy in 2005, he’s put out a series of self-released mixtapes that included hits like the Drake-assisted “Killer”. Now, after signing a multi-album deal with Atlantic Records that includes a partnership for his All Money In imprint, he’s ready to drop his major label debut.

In what might be rap’s longest promo campaign, G-funk revivalist Nipsey Hussle has been announcing the imminent arrival of his debut album, Victory Lap, since 2012. The album release date has shifted from 2013 to 2014 to 2016, to 2018, while Hussle has been making his name from a steady stream of mixtapes (including 2013’s Crenshaw, which he sold at $100 a pop, netting $100,000 in the process). The wait has been so long that many fans had consigned Victory Lap to the same graveyard of unreleased west coast classics as Dr Dre’s Detox album – now Hussle has finally deemed it worthy to be released, expectations are understandably high.

In Victory Lap’s best moments, Hussle effortlessly claims his place as crown prince of G-funk’s new school. On tracks such as Rap Niggas and Last Time That I Checc’d (where he’s joined by fellow LA revivalist YG) his brags rasp as hoarse and righteous as a man in the middle of a three-day bender, riding beats built from oozing bass swagger and slinking Compton synths, as brash and gleeful as peak-era NWA. It’s visceral west coast rap at its unapologetic finest, as Hussle refreshes cliches of unstoppable prowess with the conviction of a true believer. Elsewhere, there are saggy moments. Tracks are padded out with meandering instrumental outros – presumably to lend the album the cinematic gravitas a six-year gestation period demands; instead, they seem self-indulgent. At least half the album feels like padding, and there’s nothing with the sheer rage and power of his verses on 2016 anti-Trump classic FDT. Perhaps Hussle isn’t quite ready for the victory lap just yet.

01 – Victory Lap (feat. Stacy Barthe)

With their absolute technical perfection and their musical approach, the vocal jazz ensemble Novi Singers were at the time often compared to Lambert-Ross-Hendricks or Les Double Six. The story of the Novi Singers begins in 1964 when Bernard Kawka, a student at the Warsaw Music Conservatory, decides to found his own jazz group with other students, choosing the voice as an ideal instrument.

The Novi Singers were one of the most successful groups in Polish Jazz. Spanning a career of some 20 years, the group achieved international fame, playing clubs and festivals throughout Europe. In 1978 they were listed in Downbeat as “best international vocal group”. In the last few years the group has gained a cult following of new listeners. The group shies away from the lyrics, as these “vocal instruments”, concentrate on sophisticated harmonies, and scat solos. A topflight international rhythm section along with trumpet and sax accompany the singers. Novi starts off with the relaxed original blues The Second Side –there’s an impressive scat vocal solo and Idrees Sulieman’s down-home trumpet solo. Beautiful lilting vocal harmonies adorn the classic standard made famous in the jazz world by Bill Evans, Alice in Wonderland. On A Foggy Day, the trumpet leads off the solos with Novi as backup before adding a flashy scat solo. Nil Hefti’s popular Lil’ Darlin’ takes the appropriate slow stroll through the melody, and then there’s Kulfon, a hip blues with smoking trumpet and alto solos, as the Novi Singers blow the background lines. The beautiful ballad I Don’t Know precedes a blistering alto solo on Apartment Under the Rood, and the hard-swinging Secret Life scats the album home. Lambert Hendricks & Ross, the Double Six, the Four Freshmen, the Swingle Singers, Manhattan Transfer – the Novi Singers hold their own and more – vocal jazz at its best!

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 45:41 minutes | 946 MB | Genre: Pop

idina. is Menzel’s first album since her October 2014 release of Holiday Wishes, a Christmas album produced by Grammy Award-winner Walter Afanasieff (Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey). The album was met with rave reviews, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Holiday Albums chart and gave Menzel a Top 10 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart.

Tony-winning renaissance woman Idina Menzel returns with her fifth studio LP, 2016’s idina. Aside from a Christmas album and a live symphonic set of pop standards, this is Menzel’s first proper release since 2008’s Glen Ballard-produced I Stand. While she’s logged plenty of stage time in the eight ensuing years, her most notable contribution came on (or rather, off) screen as the voice of snow queen Elsa in Disney’s 2013 smash hit Frozen. Since “Let It Go” entered the pop musical canon, Menzel’s powerhouse voice has been heard far and wide. For her return to adult-oriented pop, she tapped producer and songwriter Walter Afanasieff to help craft a sound that’s expansive enough to resonate with fans of her stage work while adding a bit of a modern edge, particularly to tracks like the electronic-laced anthem “Queen of Swords,” the slinky guitar-rocker “Cake,” and the powerful “I Do,” a response to her divorce from actor Taye Diggs. As a whole, idina. is by far Menzel’s most personal album to date and is a vast improvement on her last studio outing, which framed her strong voice in far blander adult contemporary surroundings, not to mention with less essential material. Largely co-written by Menzel, many of these songs have more vitality and personality to them and she applies herself accordingly to the performances. Not forgetting her wheelhouse, a number of ballads dot the landscape, but even those are less theatrical and moodier than what she is generally known for. There’s plenty here to like, and her decision to get personal pays off artistically. ~ Timothy Monger

Vittorio Ghielmi, one of today’s most admired viola da gamba soloists, comes from a family of musicians (his brother founded Il Giardino Armonico with Giovanni Antonini). In parallel with his erudite and virtuoso readings of Marais or Graun, Vittorio Ghielmi is an artist who enjoys crossing borders. With his ensemble, Il Suonar Parlante, he seeks new musical languages and collaborates with leading figures of jazz (Uri Caine) and the masters of traditional music (Khaled Arman, Dhruba Ghosh). With “Gypsy Baroque”, he and his gypsy friends present a dazzling album bubbling over with life. He has gone to Transylvania in search of the gypsy music of the eighteenth century that was played on the frontiers of the Ottoman and Austrian Empires – music that influenced composers like Mozart and Haydn for their famous ‘Janissary’ pieces. For this recording, he places these gypsy tunes (only the melody is written) in perspective with orchestrations of the period. The Baroque specialists of his ensemble are joined by longstanding guest artists (the soprano Graciela Gibelli and the recorder player Dorothee Oberlinger) and traditional musicians like the Slovak violinist Stanislav Palúch and Marcel Comendant, a virtuoso exponent of the cimbalom and of improvisation. Going beyond the ‘documentary’ aspect, already fascinating, here is a genuine musical recreation!

The arrangements redefine the soundscape; they modify the spectator’s original experience of the music, but without damaging the images he or she already associates with it.
In this recording, the violin replaces the human voice (songs are important components of several of the soundtracks, for instance Yentl, Fiddler on The Roof, and Yidl mitn dl/Yiddle with his Fiddle): it plays the melody, and it has the evocative power to grab our attention. In Western thought, as well as in secular Jewish tradition, the violin is intimately connected with melodies and emotions. Melodies and the music of lms are inextricably linked. The melody is more than a sound decoration, it avors the whole movie with its evocative perfume while implicitly telling a wordless story; the characteristic sound of the violin reinforces this emotional power.

Itzhak Perlman’s soulful tone and virtuosic technique along with Cantor Helfgot’s spellbinding tenor meld perfectly together on a new album of beloved liturgical and traditional works. While rooted in the cantorial-liturgical tradition of Jewish music, the ten tracks on Eternal Echoes encompass a wide range of musical moods.

Perlman said that his idea ‘was to do Jewish comfort music – everything that I recognize from my childhood is in this program.’ The two masters began to explore the confluences of sound between Perlman’s famed classical technique with Helfgot’s magnificent golden voice. ‘I always find that there is a real communication between voice and violin,’ says Perlman. ‘This was the fulfillment of a dream,’ says Helfgot. ‘When I was a child growing up I always knew about Itzhak Perlman, so of course I said yes, right away! I am very happy that this dream became real.’

Released to coincide with the High Holy Days, these exquisitely crafted musical pictures include a stately and dramatic arrangement of ‘Sheyibone Bays Hamikdosh,’ the operatic ‘Shoyfer Shel Moshiach,’ written by Abraham Goldfaden, father of the Yiddish theater, ‘Dem Trisker Rebn’s Nign,’ a song Perlman learned from his klezmer collaborators and ‘Mizmor L’Dovid,’ an arrangement of Pslam 23 which may be the most famous piece on the album.

Eternal Echoes wraps up with ‘Kol Nidrei,’ the famous prayer for Yom Kippur, in a simple chamber-music setting that contrasts tastefully with past grandiose arrangements familiar to fans of singers like Richard Tucker and Jan Peerce. About Itzhak Perlman – Israeli-American violinist Itzhak Perlman is widely considered one of the most accomplished violin virtuosi in the world.

Since making his Carnegie Hall debut in 1963, he has performed throughout the world with every major orchestra, recorded dozens of albums, and received many awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in the recording arts in 2008. Abot Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot: Born in Tel Aviv, Cantor Helfgot has become a leader in today’s revival of Jewish liturgical music since his concert debut at the age of 23. He is both a recording artist and a highly sought-after singer at concerts and Shabbatot. He has performed across six continents drawing record crowds, in addition to serving as Chief Cantor of the Park East Synagogue in New York City.

J. Roddy Walston & the Business are a tough band to pin down, with a sound that is both familiar and then something else again: a mix of Southern rock, and Jerry Lee Lewis with some Big Star tossed in, a whole lot of Led Zeppelin stomp, a Creedence Clearwater Revival kind of bounce to everything, maybe some Motown soul, too, and yet, this is a band that assimilates all of this with ease, and truthfully, it works more often than it doesn’t. Essential Tremors (the title refers to a nervous-system disorder that affects main singer and songwriter J. Roddy Walston and causes his hands to shake on occasion) is the band’s third full-length, and it is a wonderfully rocking and varied affair, full of sturdy riffs, thundering drums, smart lyrics, surprising harmonies, and atmospherics, and actually comes close to capturing the crackling energy of the band’s legendary live shows. There’s plenty to like here, including the first single “Heavy Bells,” which rises into a shrieking, blistering chorus, the classic rock-sounding “Take It as It Come,” the high vocals and Led Zeppelin kinetics of “Black Light,” the Big Star-like ballad “Nobody Knows,” the beautiful and wise “Boys Can Never Tell” (complete with pedal steel guitar from Jeremy Long), and the R&B feel of the set-closer “Midnight Cry.” It’s a fine outing from a versatile band that knows what they do best, and man, they can rock. ~ Steve Leggett

‘Prima Donna is an opera composed by Canadian-American singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright to a French language libretto which he co-authored with Bernadette Colomine. It is about ‘a day in the life of an aging opera singer,’ anxiously preparing for her comeback in 1970s Paris, who falls in love with a journalist. It premiered at the Palace Theatre, Manchester on July 10, 2009 during the Manchester International Festival. The U.S. premiere was presented by New York City Opera at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on February 19, 2012. In March 2014, Wainwright began raising funds via PledgeMusic to record a two-disc album recording of the opera.’….’It is vitally important to me that Prima Donna be properly recorded and released so that I can tour a concert version of it in the coming year, and I have decided to do this with the help of both PledgeMusic and the incredible BBC Symphony Orchestra which in turn requires your generous support. Quality studio opera recordings are extremely expensive and too time consuming to pull off these days, and it seems that a once vibrant recording industry is no longer what it was and new methods are needed to get the music out. Though sad, the upside is that everyone in the field agrees that this is a great time to bring the audience into the wonders of the creative process and the myriad of stages the recording of an opera requires. Exciting rehearsals, deep conversations, strange and colorful characters, not to mention many a silly moment, all of this I’m truly excited to experience with you until that glorious moment when the conductor, myself the composer, the orchestra, the singers and the recording crew turn on the red light and put down for posterity my first magnum opus, Prima Donna.’

A taste for clarity of thought, sobriety and purity of form, sincerity, disdain for grandiose effects’: that was how Gabriel Fauré, the creator of a quintessentially French art, summed up his artistic and spiritual creed. In his output for piano, of which he was particularly fond, he followed the trail blazed by Chopin, fearlessly using the boldest strokes of harmony to colour his music with a highly individual charm.

In the six years between And in the Endless Pause There Came the Sound of Bees and Orphée, Jóhann Jóhannsson became a celebrated film composer, earning back-to-back Oscar nominations for his life-affirming score for The Theory of Everything and his ominous, rough-edged music for Sicario. During this time, Jóhannsson continued to work on personal projects including this, his Deustche Grammophon debut. In its own way, Orphée is also a little like a soundtrack: the composer drew inspiration from the story of Orpheus’ ill-fated attempt to rescue his wife Eurydice from the underworld, building on Ovid and Jean Cocteau’s versions of the tale in his meditations on death, rebirth, and creativity. The Orpheus myth reflected Jóhannsson’s life while he worked on the album: his move from Copenhagen to Berlin marked the closing of one chapter in his life and the start of a new one. Like And in the Endless Pause There Came the Sound of Bees, Orphée is both more intimate than some of his larger works, and immediately recognizable as Jóhannsson’s. On “Flight from the City,” a gentle but insistent piano motif rises and falls like breath, while strings deepen its sweet ache; layers of counterpoint inspire bittersweet wonder on “The Drowned World”; “Orphic Hymn” showcases the composer’s flair for choral pieces, with Paul Hillier’s Theatre of Voices performing lines from Ovid’s text in Renaissance style; and “Fragment II” offers a brief burst of his grander scale with its ever-widening sea of drones and strings. This piece features Orphée’s main motif, an ascending harmonic pattern that also appears on the ghostly “A Song for Europa,” which introduces the staticky, numbers station-like recordings that flicker through the album, adding another layer of distance and mystery. Orphée’s studies in change give equal time time to mourning and hope, whether on the spine-tingling “A Pile of Dust” or the way “A Sparrow Alighted Upon Our Shoulder” and “By the Roes, and by the Hinds of the Field” dance between joy and sorrow. Similarly, Jóhannsson makes the album’s chiaroscuro qualities explicit on “De Luce et Umbra,” where a shadowy, almost subliminal pulse adds tension to the skyward strings, and on the Emily Dickinson-inspired diptych “Good Morning, Midnight” and “Good Night, Day,” where subtle transitions evoke standing between ends and beginnings. On Orphée, Jóhannsson expresses the need to let some things and people go to let new ones in with remarkable nuance, as well as the affecting beauty fans have come to know and love. ~ Heather Phares
