The fully “Remastered Eight-Album Set Features” The Legendary Drummer’s Output From Atlantic Records Offered For The First Time Since The ’70s. At the dawn of the 1970s, Billy Cobham built his legend with his bandleader debut, Spectrum. Raw, daring and overflowing with adrenalin, the album topped the Billboard Jazz charts. Having played for Miles Davis, Horace Silver and Mose Allison, Billy Cobham had joined the legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1971, before signing to Atlantic as a solo artist in 1973. Worshipped today as a titan of drumming, Billy Cobham’s career is now in its fifth decade.

Celebrating the work of the legendary Jazz musician, Rhino will release the 8-album set: BILLY COBHAM: „The Atlantic Years 1973-1978“ features:

The set includes two rare outtakes, “All 4 One” from the 1973 Spectrum sessions, and “Neu Rock ‘n’ Roll” from the 1975 A Funky Thide Of Sings sessions. Also included are the “Stratus” single edit in mono and stereo from Spectrum, the “Crosswind/Le Lis” single from Crosswinds, the “Moon Germs” single from Total Eclipse and the “Do What Cha Wanna/Hip Pockets” single from the Live On Tour In Europe (With George Duke) album.
The set features collaborations with fellow ’70s fusion pioneers Jan Hammer, Tommy Bolin, John Abercrombie, John Williams, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Cornell Dupree, John Scofield and Alphonso Johnson.

He originally learned to play guitar as a child, but fell in love with the steel guitar he received for his 18th birthday. Billy Mize, one of the last important figures remaining from the golden era of the Bakersfield Sound. In April 2016, Black Stone Cherry released “Kentucky”, to great critical and commercial success. Kentucky reached new chart peaks for the band worldwide, and was followed by massive touring through the United States, Europe and Australia. In the midst of this all, the band found the time and dedication to record “Black to Blues”. The EP „Black To Blues“ features six blues-classics originally written and/or performed by legendary musicians like Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Booker T. Jones, Albert King and Freddy King. On “Black to Blues”, these traditional songs get wildly Black Stone Cherry-fied, while also paying homage to the original on the other hand.

“I know it’s crazy for four rock n’ roll dudes to make a blues EP, but it’s us sharing with everyone the music that’s been our DNA from day one,” Black Stone Cherry vocalist and guitarist Chris Robertson says. “Blues is the music we listen to when we sit around on the bus with a bottle of bourbon.”

Black To Blues’ pays homage to the fertile 1960s era of electric blues where the masters pushed boundaries with experimentation and volume. The EP includes covers by Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, and Albert King. The album was recorded in a burst of fevered inspiration this past spring at David Barrick’s Barrick Recording, the same studio where BSC recorded its recent album ‘Kentucky.’ Self produced, tracked the music in two days, and favored a raw, in-the-moment production aesthetic to capture the inspired sessions. Chris adds: “Our approach was to do these songs as we’ve written them, with attitude and heavy guitar.”

„Black To Blues“ opens with the Howlin’ Wolf classic ‘Built For Comfort.’ Here, they harnesses the song’s dark energy with foot-stomping burly riffage, impassioned whiskey and honey vocals, and a peaks and valleys arrangement that features virtuosic bursts of bluesy guitar brilliance, smoky quiet passages, and mountains crashing down climaxes. Throughout the EP, the imaginative arrangements, soulful vocals, and subtle band interplay evoke the halcyon days of heavy blues acts such as Free and Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. On ‘Champagne & Reefer’ they mesmerize with deft slide guitar playing and powerful contrasting haunting and hefty dynamics. Other standouts include a raucous version of Muddy Waters’ ‘I Want To Be Loved,’ complete with jaw-dropping blues-rock guitar solos, and a clever rendition of Freddie King’s ‘Palace Of King”, there they “moved one note to make it more dark,” Chris reveals. The blues is always a sage teacher, and making the ‘Black To Blues’ EP was a transformative experience for Black Stone Cherry. Chris says: “It was humbling and freeing at the same time. It reignited our passion for this music, and it will definitely have an effect on our next album.”

They say you can’t go home again, but Black Stone Cherry proves otherwise on Kentucky. The hard-rocking Bluegrass State quartet recorded its fifth album, and follow-up to 2014’s Magic Mountain, at Barrick Recording in Glasgow, KY, where it recorded its 2006 debut album. The 13 tracks find BSC connecting with that same youthful energy (check out “Shakin’ My Cage,” “Soul Machine” or “Rescue Me”) but demonstrates the wisdom gleaned from nearly a decade of recording and touring on tracks such as the reflective “Long Ride” and a brassy (and timely) take on Edwin Starr’s Motown classic “War.”

The deluxe edition features two bonus tracks.

Sometimes you need to look back in order to move forward. While Black Stone Cherry have had increasing chart success — 2014’s Magic Mountain hit number five on the U.K. charts and number 22 in the U.S. — the band felt a lack of creative control over their recordings. To that end, they left Roadrunner Records and signed to Mascot, run by Ron Burman (the man who signed them to Roadrunner in the first place). Earlier Black Stone Cherry albums were always imbalanced: songwriting was sometimes sacrificed in an attempt to replicate the band’s live sound; at other times, it was the reverse. Kentucky is a self-produced, back-to-the-roots affair (with participation from a host of local players and singers). Opener “The Way of the Future” walks the line between gnarly, riff-tastic hard rock and heavy metal. Frontman/guitarist Chris Robertson’s rant against greedy politicians is fueled by his and Ben Wells’ twin-guitar attack, grooving tom-tom, kickdrum fills from John Fred Young, and a fuzzed-out, Geezer Butler-esque bassline from Jon Lawhon. The two proceeding tracks, “In Our Dreams” and “Shakin’ My Cage,” are equally bone-crunching. The gears shift on “Soul Machine.” It blends greasy Southern-fried funk and adrenalin-fueled blues-rock, with Robertson backed by Stax-style vocalists Sandra and Tonya Dye. Black Stone Cherry can still write killer hooks, too: “Long Ride” is a power ballad in classic ’70s rock fashion, complete with a rousing anthemic chorus and melodic guitar fills by Wells. The band updates Edwin Starr’s psychedelic soul classic “War” with fat baritone saxophone, brass, dirty, in-the-red distorted guitars, and a large backing chorus. Robertson’s vocal is filled with righteous indignation as the band swells toward volcanic eruption. The vintage Southern rock vibe on “Cheaper to Drink Alone” is classic BSC, but it’s steeped in such a catchy melody, it will likely be covered by harder, edgier contemporary country acts. Wells’ guitar break is one of his meatiest on record. “Hangman” is steeped in squalling, hard-riffing blues with a hooky chorus, while “Rescue Me,” despite its brief gospelized intro, is the meanest, leanest thing on the set. The groove-centric intro of “Feelin’ Fuzzy” gives way to a funky backbeat with guitars on stun. Closer “Darkest Secret” closes the album circle with off-the-rails metallic hard rock (complete with a Black Sabbath-style breakdown), though the chorus is drenched in Southern groove. Kentucky marks the first time BSC have balanced all of their writing strengths with their concert presence. The album is a grower. After a listen or two, Black Stone Cherry’s back-to-the-cradle approach proves that track for track, Kentucky is not only more consistent, but more satisfying than previous albums. ~~AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

Brandi Carlile does not lay idle. Between her new life as a homosexual mother which she openly displays or her activism with the association War Child, she has found time to return to the studio for the sixth time. As a mother, the hallucination of an America at the edge of cracking infused the story of what she considers the most intense of her career. By The Way, I Forgive You, entwined by the evangelical theme of forgiveness, co-produced by Shooter Jennings (the son of the late Waylon) and Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton and Lori McKenna) succeeds the country folk of The Firewatcher’s Daughter (2015). Ten tracks totalling 43 minutes, touching on topics such as Carlile’s family, politics, identity and the faithful twin Hanseroth (Fightings Machinists). The strings were arranged by the late Paul Buckmaster (Elton John, David Bowie, Rolling Stone or Leonard Cohen) and its all packed into an emotional style of country made for a broad audience.

This recorded, intimate document was recorded at Jazz Beat during the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1990 and sees its first official release on this Impulse! volume. Bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist Jim Hall played a number of duet concerts together over the years, but this was certainly among the very earliest. Given their respective careers up to this point, both men had nearly perfected the artistry of playing in this particular chamber jazz setting. That all said, it does not prepare the listener for the canny, intimate, yet absolutely electric interplay on offer here. From readings of standards such as “Bemsha Swing,” “Body and Soul,” and Skylark” through to Ornette Coleman’s “Turnaround” and excellent originals by both men — including Haden’s bookends, the tenderly dissonant “First Song” and the knotty “In the Moment,” and Hall’s sprightly melodic Latin waltz “Down from Antigua” and his fingerpopping “Big Man Blues” — this music is an adventure top to bottom. It unfolds gradually and cannily over 76 minutes. Ethan Iverson’s liner essay is spirited, insightful, and illuminating to boot. This set is not only impossible to criticize, but adds an immeasurable depth to the catalogs of both artists. ~ Thom Jurek

The Foreigner, the new action film for Casino Royale director Martin Campbell, arrives in theaters this weekend. The film is based on Stephen Leather’s novel of the same name and is a hybrid of sorts. In one instance, it is about a soldier who was traumatized but asked to gear up one more time. On the other, it is a political thriller about a soldier who has become a politician who is drumming up more trouble. The Foreigner stars the legendary Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan in this dramatic action feature.

Cliff Martinez was asked to create the soundtrack for The Foreigner. Notable for his work with Steven Soderbergh and Nicolas Winding Refn, Martinez has been a composer in high demand in recent years. Although he hasn’t typically worked on action films, he was eager to give the genre a try. What results is a soundtrack that is extremely original for an action film, but at the same time is very much in Martinez wheelhouse. We were lucky enough to have an opportunity to speak with Martinez about his contributions to The Foreigner, his current career hot steak, and his various experiences composing for different mediums.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front cover | © Knitting Factory Records

Here, we have the eldest son of the Kuti family, Femi, with his tenth album: One People, One World. It’s a record that holds to the revolutionary, conscious and dance-centred essence of Afrobeat as created by the unforgettable Fela. But it also shows off the particular talents of Femi and his group Positive Force. Before they were committed to disc, these pieces had spent a long time being perfected on the stage of the Shrine, as he had it rebuilt in Lagos, on the site of the temple built by his father. The heritage is dealt with very confidently; but the Afrobeat sound isn’t stuffy: it bears the mark of our times as seen through Fela’s legacy. The message is global, positive and fully summed up in the title One People, One World. From one end of the world to the other, we are in the same mess, on the edge of the same abyss; but we must not lose hope; we have to fight injustice.

Musically, Femi has drawn ideas and lessons from across Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas. He also expresses a certain melodic tenderness, as on the rollicking Africa Will Be Great Again which opens proceedings, and in which the horns play a euphoric, almost pop melody. The following track, Best to Live on the Good Side, has a guitar riff that sounds like one of Nile Rodgers’s, but the horns, organ and percussion remind us of where we are. With its faint island flavour, One People One World takes us away briefly from urban Lagos and Evil People nods at Brazilian samba, but Femi and his band (including his son, Omorinmade Anikulapo Kuti, often at the piano or on the bass) never stop proudly hammering out that noble Afro beat is the pride of the continent.

This album spawned two Billboard R&B Top Ten singles with “Money” and “Part Time Love.” The former is a midtempo cut with a polished texture but contrasted by Gladys Knight’s ardent vocals. The latter is a rather short but sweet-tempered ballad. Both peaked at number four with the latter surviving three weeks longer on the charts at 14. “Street Brother” is a blues number featuring an impressive Bubba Knight on lead vocals. The rendition of the Roberta Flack classic “Feel Like Makin’ Love” has an urban, blues ambience complemented by the cohesive touch of the Pips. Eugene McDaniels, who produced much of the album, also wrote this vintage number. The songs shine with eloquence and are seasoned with an inviting Southern aura. ~ Craig Lytle

For his first album with Sony Classical, Adam Laloum returns to one of his favourite composers. He distinguished himself with his first recording in 2011, for Mirare, which contained four of the composer’s major works: Variations on an original theme Op. 21 No. 1, the wonderful and too-little-played Klavierstücke from Op. 76, the two Rhapsodies Op. 79 and the 3 Intermezzi Op. 117. And so it is hardly a surprise that today he is offering up his vision of Brahms’s Concertos. Sony Classical has marshalled its formidable resources: one of the best orchestras in Germany, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin; and one of the young wolves of orchestral conducting from Asia (but already well-known in Europe – witness his many collaborations with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande for Pentatone) join them twice, once in August, then in October 2016, in the Radio Berlin Großer Sendesaal, for sessions which must have been a childhood dream come true for the young Frenchman. An amazing experience!

Alfredo Rodriguez moved to the United States in January 2009. An uprooting that has never cut off the 32-year-old Cuban pianist from his origins and heritage. “When you live in your own country, you are immersed in that reality and you’re not necessarily conscious of all the different elements that make it what it is. I breathed Cuban music. Being outside that reality gives me a different perspective. Creating and playing this music has been like finding out who I am, all over again.

Who is this talented Quincy Jones protégé? We already know. But his fourth album for Mack Avenue further highlights his ability to slide from one genre to the other, to slalom between eras and landscapes. Rodriguez’s resolutely plural jazz is always impressive, even when it takes on a challenge such as Besame Mucho. With drummer Michael Olivera and bassist Munir Hossn, he has built a style of jazz with multiple compartments, logically anchored in the tradition of his homeland and extremely rich musically. But it’s when his playing style is elsewhere that he appears more poetic than ever. The narrative strength of his piano takes over and he just goes along with it, eyes closed… It’s worth noting that Quincy, him again, is back to producing on this Little Dream to make it even more delightful!

Cuban pianist and composer Alfredo Rodríguez explores his memories of Cuba, the people and the culture he left behind and finds his new place on this release, co-produced by Rodríguez’s champion and mentor, Quincy Jones. Featuring a superb ensemble that includes bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding, The Invasion Parade contains nine tracks including originals by Rodríguez as well as evergreens such as Guantanamera.

“When you live in your own country, you are immersed in that reality and you’re not necessarily conscious of all the different elements that make it what it is. I breathed Cuban music. Being outside that reality gives me a different perspective. Creating and playing this music has been like finding out who I am, all over again.” –Alfredo Rodríguez

The title of Cuban expatriate jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez’s sophomore offering for Mack Avenue Records is inspired by an annual parade in the island city of Santiago that celebrates the nation’s independence. On the follow-up to 2011’s Sounds of Space, Rodriguez delves deeply into the sounds of his native land with an incendiary approach. Co-produced with Quincy Jones, his lineup for the set includes saxophonists Billy Carrion and Román Filiú, drummer/percussionist Henry Cole, vocalist/percussionist Pedrito Martinez, flutist Javier Porta, and alternating bassists Peter Slavov and Esperanza Spalding. Rodriguez is an exceptionally gifted pianist and arranger, and he delved deep into Cuba’s vast musical variety from guajiro to Yoruban Santeria music, comparsas, timba, Caribbean folk, and, of course, Afro-Cuban jazz, and wound in a thoroughly modern, utterly enchanting mix of originals, folk songs, and classics. Standouts include his bold, dissonant, nearly political reading of “Guantanamera,” the lithe “A Santa Bárbara,” mold-breaking readings of standards such as “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás” and “Veinte Años” with bold rhythmic and harmonic extrapolations, and “Timberobot,” a tough workout with flying arpeggios. –AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

In many ways, singer/songwriter Amos Lee’s sixth full-length album, 2016’s ebullient Spirit, isn’t that different from his previous efforts. At its core, Spirit is a set of earthy, passionate songs rife with Lee’s longstanding knack for melodic, poetic lyricism. That said, Spirit is technically a new start for Lee, as it is both his first completely self-produced album and his first release for John Varvatos Records/Republic Records. Musically, Spirit also feels like a new beginning, with Lee bringing more of his contemporary R&B and ’70s soul influences to the fore. However, rather than serving as a complete shift away from Lee’s past work, Spirit feels like the apotheosis of his ongoing maturation as an artist who has never shied away from creative growth. Framing his voice in warm acoustic guitars, strings, deep bass, and even the occasional synth, Lee updates his approach, bringing to mind a meld of Milton Nascimento, Bill Withers, and Al Jarreau. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s written some of his most immediately memorable hooks to date. Cuts like the title track, “New Love,” and “One Lonely Night,” are literate, deeply felt compositions that never seem overly labored. There are also some effective stylistic experiments here in the Latin-flavored “Lost Child” and the rambling, gospel-infused “Running Out of Time.” Primarily, it’s his soulful lyricism on tracks like “Til You Come Back Through,” the orchestral “Hurt Me,” and the hip-hop- and country-infused “Vaporize” that best represent the mix of old and new sounds Lee has combined here so perfectly. ~ Matt Collar

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Booklet, Front Cover | © naïve classique

The Triple Concerto is recorded here in concert, which is sure to guarantee a bit of spontaneity for a work of great symphonic dimensions – 35 minutes long – which owes as much to chamber music as to concert symphonies. There is still the question of whether it’s better to call in an established trio for the triple soloist part: Anne Gastinel, Gil Shaham and Nicholas Angelich didn’t know each other musically beforehand, and they opted, here again, for spontaneity and stepping out of the routine: which pays off brilliantly, as the orchestra is directed by Paavo Järvi, who can tailor the performances so well. His judicious eye is indispensable to this rather dense work, which tends to move in circles in terms of tonalities. The album closes with the Gassenhauer trio for clarinet (with Andreas Ottensamer), cello and piano (with the same soloists as for the Concerto), recorded in studio. The title Gassenhauer was chosen after the fact, in view of the different themes in the third movement, which came from an opera which was a smash hit in Vienna – and the Viennese slang of the day, a “hit” is called a “Gassenhauer”.

A fiery partnership. The brainchild of Antoine Tamestit, this recording stems from a long-standing collaboration with his recital partner, Jörg Widmann. Over the course of his new viola concerto, Widmann the composer lets his soloist move freely about the stage, producing fresh orchestral colours within a novel structure: combining humour with earnestness, ferocity with delicacy, Widmann’s unfailing sense of theatre serves to highlight the work’s haunting beauty. Whether embedded in the orchestral fabric or exploring the more intimate pieces on this programme, the violist comes out a hero, hands down!

This reverie offered by Brice Sailly in homage to François Couperin is presented in the guise of a trip to Arcadia, that utopian land which lies hidden in the heart of European geography. The selected harpsichord pieces, most of them evoking childhood and the birth of love, sit beside excerpts from the Concerts royaux that set the scene rather as Watteau might have done, leaving to the less well-known airs de cour the task of describing sentiments in words. Couperin discreetly whispers the most luminous of truths. Here all is benevolence, a smile on the lips, a light heart, and melancholy is gently dismissed in favour of consolation.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 37:58 minutes | 798 MB | Genre: Folk

Recorded in less than 48 hours with longtime collaborator Mike Mogis and engineer Ben Brodin, Ruminations sees Conor Oberst going full-on Nebraska, delivering a raw, difficult, and often beautiful set of deeply personal songs with minimal accompaniment. His seventh solo album and first since 2014’s Upside Down Mountain, Ruminations is a far cry from the fiery, politically charged punk of 2015’s Desaparecidos outing Payola. That said, it delivers much of what fans have come to expect from the prolific, erudite midwesterner; alternately shambolic and stately distillations of life’s hardships, delivered with honesty and wobbly conviction. Written during a particularly challenging time that found Oberst battling anxiety, depression, laryngitis, and a host of other medical ills, the ten-track set bristles with the unease that comes with having to confront a particularly large swath of the unknown. Utilizing piano, guitar, and occasionally harmonica, Oberst wrestles with past, present, and future, but most of the aptly named LP concerns itself with loss. It’s not the prettiest or easiest of records, nor is it Oberst’s finest outing to date, but it does house some real gems, including the emotionally charged opener “Tachycardia,” the thoughtful, Dylan-esque “You All Loved Him Once,” and the barbed and broken “A Little Uncanny,” the latter of which manages to pay homage to Jane Fonda, take down Ronald Reagan, and eulogize Robin Williams, Christopher Hitchens, Oliver Sacks, and Sylvia Plath, all in just over four minutes. ~ James Christopher Monger

The piano duo formed by Arthur Gold (1917–90) and Robert Fizdale (1920–95) enjoyed immense fame in the post-war years. Poulenc wrote a piece for them, as did Darius Milhaud, Samuel Barber, Luciano Berio and John Cage. They recorded with Leonard Bernstein. Nicknamed “The Boys”, they played all over the world and were praised for their ‘seamless perfection and an inimitable “joie de vivre” (New York Times). The Boys were also famed for their bestselling books and television programmes on cooking, their other passion! Duo Jatekok (játékok =”games” in Hungarian) was formed in 2007. Like The Boys and unlike most current piano duos, Adélaïde Panaget and Naïri Badal are not siblings, but childhood friends. “They have everything going for them: dynamic rigour and expressive energy, exuberant keyboard skills and multilingual touch, and more than anything else, a sort of jubilatory osmosis”, wrote Le Monde. For this first recording on Alpha, they have decided to pay tribute to “The Boys” with a programme of works written for them, Poulenc’s Sonata for two pianos and Élégie and a composition by a legend of jazz, the American pianist Dave Brubeck, Points of Jazz. Duo Jatekok also wanted to include music by one of their contemporaries: Baptiste Trotignon’s Trois Pièces (including one dedicated to Poulenc!) complete the programme.

The Elias Quartet has already recorded a complete cycle of Beethoven quartets at Wigmore Hall that was extremely well received by the critics. Now Sara Bitlloch, Donald Grant, Martin Saving and Marie Bitlloch present on Alpha an album devoted to Schumann: “We have always had a special affection for Robert Schumann’s Third Quartet. It’s one of the first works we played together. Since then we have often come back to it, as if to a splendid and familiar region that we think we know thoroughly, but which yields up new secrets with each visit. The Second Quartet, on the other hand, was a much later and more complicated discovery for us. The writing is so personal, so unidiomatic for the instruments, so full of nuances, that to begin with we found it hard to come up with a unanimous voice for this work. The enthusiasm of the first movement can easily turn into anxiety if you push it a bit too far. In the slow movement, the texture is sometimes so bare that to convey its tenderness you have to sustain it with great fervour. The capricious Scherzo is bristling with rhythmic pitfalls and requires a diabolical mastery of the instruments, while the Finale is an endless explosion of joy!”.
