Not until later on, in his posthumously published memoirs, did Shostakovich provide a personal insight into his Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65, which he completed on September 9, 1943 in only two months’ time, following a short, yet agonisingly dry creative period: “The Seventh and the Eighth are my ‘Requiem’.” At the time, his first comments on the new work were very different, and (as was usual during Stalin’s regime, one should add) meaningless: “This work mirrors my thoughts and feelings following the joyous reports on the first victories of the Red Army.” For sure … After all, it would be hard to come up with another 20th-century symphony that soundsas inscrutable and sadly fateful as Shostakovich’s Eighth.

Following his triumphant Leningrad Symphony, the composer had deeply disappointed the expectations of the Apparatschik with this work, as a great part of the Eighth is pensive and melancholy, and does not announce the victory of the Red Army at Stalingrad. Quite the opposite, instead of producing emotional and enduring symphonic music, Shostakovich the man not only expresses his deep mourning of the dreadful tragedy of the Second World War and its countless victims, he also announces in the most deeply pessimistic tone the individual suffering of the people in the Soviet Union, who (also before the war) suffered and died under Stalin’s reign of terror. Shostakovich’s hope that the authorities would interpret the resignative tone of the work as a consequence of the German aggression, was rapidly dashed, and thus the Eighth was censured in1948, after Shostakovich, Prokofiev and other leading composers had been accused of “formalistic tendencies”. The symphony was banned from the concert podium, and numerous radio recordings of the work were destroyed.

Having first impacted our website way back in 2014, 19-year old rising El Paso crooner Khalid has been building a strong a name for himself over the past few years thanks in particular to singles like “Authentic” & “Location”, which caught a co-sign from Kylie Jenner on Snapchat last May. But now signed to RCA & looking to take the next step in his career, the R&B crooner decides to come though today and release his debut album called American Teen. The album debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200 with 37,000 album-equivalent units, of which 12,000 were pure album sales.

Khalid Robinson made major commercial headway in early 2017 with “Location,” a drowsy, teetering ballad the singer and songwriter seemed to deliver while lying on his bed, or maybe someone else’s couch, eyes glued to his phone, just after waking up. In that song, and through much of what fills out American Teen, his debut album, Robinson’s not one to get worked up. He’s in no particular rush, content to drift through life while accepting, and occasionally sort of celebrating, the present. “American Teen” itself – hollowed-out late-’80s mall pop with a disco-funk bassline – is a youth anthem of shrugging aimlessness. There’s not a whole lot of enthusiasm for revelry, dulled by substances, apathy, a combination of the two, or just the aspiration to look the part: “I’m so faded off of all the things I’ve taken, and maybe I’m not really drunk, maybe I’m really good at faking.” There are points at which Robinson makes Frank Ocean sound like Teddy Pendergrass. On “Young Dumb & Broke,” the mere concept of commitment seems so silly to him that he can’t be bothered to enunciate the word, or maybe he just lost interest after the second syllable. After a nonchalant chorus that consists primarily of the song’s title and a lethargic warble – surprise – he dumps one of his best melodies in the bridge. While he opens “Another Sad Love Song” by confessing “I’m not the best at showing my emotions,” some bright moments make it apparent that Robinson has clearly sold himself short. Dusty ballad “Cold Blooded,” in particular, demonstrates that he’s perfectly capable of conveying grief without being overly demonstrative. When alert, he can be a force.

The first album since his 2015 indie rock sojourn finds Kid Cudi back behind the microphone. He communes with the drum, modulating his voice in eerie and commanding tones, savoring each syllable. Willow Smith, Pharrell Williams, Travis Scott, and André 3000 (billed as André Benjamin here) pick up valuable assists, with Three Stacks reasserting his status as a feature king, electrifying his bars on “By Design” and “The Guide.” Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ is a cleansing journey—Cudi acknowledging the past while keeping an eye on the future.

Following the noble misstep of 2015’s grunge-rap Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven, Kid Cudi returns to introspective hip-hop weirdness on his sixth outing, Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’. The sprawling effort finds Scott Mescudi in a new, healing state, fresh from a self-imposed hospitalization for depression and suicidal urges. Sonically, it recalls his early Man on the Moon period (production by Mike Dean and Plain Pat keep things consistent), but emotionally, it offers deeper therapy and catharsis. Running at one and a half hours, Passion is long and occasionally drags. Although split into four digestible “Acts,” it tests the limits of the casual listener’s patience. Fans should be pleased, however, by the wealth of new material. “Tuned,” the album’s first act, is one of the better portions, blending ’90s trip-hop with a concoction of Kanye’s 808s and Trent Reznor’s Ghosts soundscapes. From the mournful atmospherics of “Releaser” and the languid “Frequency” to the catchy André 3000/Pharrell Williams island-tinged collaboration “By Design” and Mike WiLL Made It’s popping “All In,” “Tuned” sets the course for another intergalactic therapy session. Aptly titled “Therapy,” the second act contains some of the best insights into Cudi’s state of mind. On “ILLusions,” he bids farewell “to the demons in my head,” declaring “no more misery…free, free.” On “Baptized in Fire,” Travis Scott pleads with his “big bro” in a sweet moment of vulnerability, asking the Man on the Moon to phone home because he’s needed. Yet, despite appearances by Willow Smith (on the beautiful dark twisted dirge “Rose Golden”) and another from Pharrell (“Flight at First Sight/Advanced”), this act is where Passion’s energy starts to lag. Third act “Niveaux de l’Amour” (“Levels of Love”) is the only segment devoid of guests, kicking off with a one-two punch of hyper-horny sex jams. The throbbing “Dance 4 Eternity” is the mood-building foreplay to the blush-worthy “Distant Fantasies,” in which Cudi promises, among other things, to “pound it ’til it’s numb.” However, as the track draws out, the only things getting numb are the listener’s tolerance and attention span. Still, the latter half of the act manages to be one of the album’s best stretches, from the cathartic “Wounds” — where Cudi proclaims “I’mma sew these wounds myself” — to the lovely “Mature Nature” and sweeping “Kitchen.” Finishing on “It’s Bright and Heaven Is Warm” — a spin on DMX’s It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot — Cudi soars like an eagle on “Cosmic Warrior” and reclaims his sense of self on the uplifting “Heart of a Lion” callback “The Commander,” on which he reaffirms that he’s “so in control.” On closer “Surfin’,” Pharrell takes the reins once again, sending Kid Cudi off on a horn-filled tribal wave. While the album could have been split into two thematically concise releases (or a single focused edit), Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ breathes gravitas into the Kid Cudi discography, realigning his trajectory and hinting at hope, possibility, and, most importantly, recovery.

Recorded: October–November 1973; April 1974 (‘Kissin’ Time’) at Bell Sound Studios, New York City

Kiss is the debut album by the legendary hard rock band KISS. Most of the material on the album was written by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, and it was produced by Kenny Kerner and Richie Wise. The album was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York City. While it sold few copies at first, Kiss eventually would go on to sell over 500,000 copies and be certified Gold by the RIAA.

Kiss’ 1974 self-titled debut is one of hard rock’s all-time classic studio recordings. Kiss is chock full of their best and most renowned compositions, containing elements of Rolling Stones/New York Dolls party-hearty rock & roll, Beatles tunefulness, and Sabbath/Zep heavy metal, and wisely recorded primal and raw by producers Richie Wise and Kenny Kerner (of Gladys Knight fame). Main songwriters Stanley and Simmons each had a knack for coming up with killer melodies and riffs, as evidenced by “Nothin’ to Lose” and “Deuce” (by Simmons), “Firehouse” and “Black Diamond” (by Stanley), as well as “Strutter” and “100,000 Years” (collaborations by the two). Also included is the Ace Frehley alcohol anthem “Cold Gin,” “Let Me Know” (a song that Stanley played for Simmons upon their very first meeting, then titled “Sunday Driver”), and one of Kiss’ few instrumentals: the groovy “Love Theme from Kiss” (penned by the entire band). The only weak track is a tacky cover of the 1959 Bobby Rydell hit “Kissin’ Time,” which was added to subsequent pressings of the album to tie in with a “Kissing Contest” promotion the band was involved in at the time. Along with 1976’s Destroyer, Kiss’ self-titled debut is their finest studio album, and has only improved over the years. –AllMusic Review by Greg Prato

Belgian-born pop singer/songwriter Lara Fabian began singing, dancing, and taking piano lessons at a very young age and began formal music lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels at age eight. During her ten years of study there, Fabian started writing and performing her own songs, which were inspired as much by her classical vocal and music theory training as they were by Barbra Streisand and Queen. After finishing her studies, Fabian moved to Montreal and began her own label and publishing company, Productions Clandestines. Collaborator/producer Rick Allison, an old friend from Brussels, joined her in Montreal and the pair worked steadily on writing and recording songs. In 1991, Fabian’s French-language debut album was released in Canada and sold over 100,000 copies in three years. Her consistent touring in Quebec helped bolster her 1994 album Carpe Diem to similar success, which paved the way for 1997’s Pure, a two million-selling album in France that spawned the anti-homophobia anthem “La Difference.” The live album Fabian released a year later solidified the international buzz around her and she was signed by Sony Music, which released her self-titled, English-language album in 2000. It was a huge success across the globe, reaching number 1 in the US Heatseeker chart and rocketed to the top of the French charts. A Year later she returned to French language for her fifth album, Nue, which documented her tumultuous time during the overwhelming success of her previous album. In 2004 Fabian released her second English record, A Wonderful Life. The album featured a collection of acoustic-pop songs and included “Review My Kisses” — a track Fabian originally turned down the track for the album. However, after being impressed by LeAnn Rimes’ version, she recorded the song herself. Just a year later, Fabian released 9, which for the first time was not produced by long term collaborator Rick Allison. Instead, Jean-Félix Lalanne took the helm, and brought about a distinct change in Fabian’s pop sound and marked her fifth French studio album. The highly anticipated collaboration with pianist Mark Herskowitz, Toutes Les Femmes En Moi, arrived in 2009 and brought together a collection of songs from an array of artists such as Celine Dion and Edith Piaf. 2010 saw the release of the compilation Best of Laura Fabian, which included the hit single “I Will Love Again” and her duet with Johnny Hallyday “Requiem Pour un Fou.” –Artist Biography by Heather Phares

Coming Home is the debut studio album by American gospel and soul singer Leon Bridges. He received positive reviews from contemporary music critics. The album was written by Todd Bridges, Austin Michael Jenkins, Joshua Block, Chris Vivion and produced by Niles City Sound. The album was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. This DELUXE edition features FIVE BONUS tracks.

It’s difficult to imagine a 1963 Columbia release from an artist whose look and sound echo 1911. In 2015, however, the thought of a young artist seemingly transported from a bygone era – 52 years prior, to be exact – requires no imagination whatsoever. Here’s Leon Bridges. He was born in 1989. The singer, songwriter, and guitarist takes it back to the early ’60s, slightly earlier than the majority of soul-rooted artists, including labelmates Raphael Saadiq, who have favored a vintage approach over a contemporary one. For those who hold younger artists to an impossible standard of authenticity, Bridges is unlikely to receive a passing grade. As a youngster, he was naturally drawn to libidinous, then-current pop-R&B acts like Usher and Ginuwine, and he didn’t even have to get his hands dirty to absorb later inspiration from the likes of Sam Cooke and pre-“Grapevine” Marvin Gaye, not when all he needed was an Internet connection. Helped by White Denim’s Josh Block and Austin Jenkins, Bridges touches all the retro-soul bases. Each element of his ten-song, half-hour debut evokes early- to mid-’60s R&B: the song structures, the application of reverb, the dust-coated church organ, the doo wop background vocals, the horn charts that accent rather than dominate. Bridges sings of seeking salvation and taking trains, and he offers proposals as modest as “I won’t weigh you down.” If he were a shouter, Bridges would likely come across as a caricature, but he works the deeply heartfelt but understated angle – most of the songs are ballads, and only a couple work up a sweat – without any sense of affectation. While each line is believable, “Lisa Sawyer” is all the way real, a sweet and languid biographical sketch of Bridges’ mother. It’s all a pleasing time warp without turbulence, one with songs built more to evoke the past than to last in one’s memory.

“Places” is the second studio album by American singer Lea Michele. The Recording of the album began in April 2015. Shortly into the recording process, Michele stated that the album would be less pop-influenced than her debut, and would “[go] back to [her] roots” with a more theatrical sound.

It’d be a shame to adorn a voice as powerful as Glee star Lea Michele’s with too much fuss. So Places doesn’t; it’s a straight-up vocal showcase packed with engrossing, emotional tunes. On songs like the gentle opener “Love Is Alive,” there’s little more than a graceful piano or string section to guide her, allowing those expressive pipes to soar over heartfelt, typically uplifting lyrics. When she sings, “I’m still a believer/Can’t nobody tame this raging heart,” on “Believer,” it works as both a tender self-reflection and a battle cry.

British electronic group Leftfield have reissued their 1995 debut album Leftism in May this year as Leftism 22. The reissue comes in the form of a double deluxe CD edition which feature the remastered album (Neil Barnes and Paul Daley have taken care of remastering duties) on the first CD and a bonus disc of the 11 album tracks remixed by a host of “top house/electronica/techno artists”.

Leftfield, the duo of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley, widely regarded as one of electronic music’s all time greatest acts, have today announced the release of ‘Leftism 22’ a special reissue of their seminal debut album ‘Leftism’ and a UK tour. Formed in 1989, before emerging publicly in 1990 with ‘Not Forgotten’, they established a template for a new strain of British house leaning away from American styles dominating UK clubs.

Originally released in January 1995, their debut album remains one of the defining statements of dance music, a gloriously inter-woven bombardment of musical styles, nominated for a Mercury prize and later voted in the top ten greatest albums of all time. ‘Leftism 22’ arrives 22 years on from the release of the original, in a remastered version overseen by Leftfield’s Neil Barnes and Paul Daley. Available in a limited edition 3xLP vinyl, mirroring the original release, as well as digital and 2xCD editions, it will feature the original album remastered, as well as all 11 original tracks remixed by a host of artists, including Skream, Adrian Sherwood, BodyJack and Voiski, making 22 tracks in total. To mark the release, Leftfield (now led solely by Neil Barnes) will perform ‘Leftism’ live in its entirety for the first time, including Motion at Bristol and a return to Brixton Academy.

The seventh full-length release for the rock band features guest appearances from Kiiara, Pusha T and Stormzy. The album also includes Jon Green, Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Ross Golan, Michael Leary, Andrew Goldstein, blackbear, and Eg White as co-songwriters. One More Light was promoted by the band by various acoustic performances by Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda of the lead single at many promotional live events and interviews.

One More Light, Linkin Park’s seventh set, is a divisive and brazen statement from a band that already does not shy away from fearless experimental leaps. From the rap focus on Collision Course and the Fort Minor side project to the electronic A Thousand Suns and their remix albums, Linkin Park have balanced an empire built upon pain and angst with an admirable dose of cross-genre dabbling. Which is why One More Light shouldn’t come as such a surprise. And yet, the album remains a jarring follow-up to 2014’s muscular The Hunting Party and an overall curve ball in their catalog. Recruiting electronic pop producers like Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Jesse Shatkin, and RAC, Linkin Park made a pop album, which is sure to infuriate diehards who yearn for the days of “shut up when I’m talking to you.” While it’s unfair to fault them for not being pissed off anymore, the experience is not the same. For the first time, the band sounds happy and content. Though while they may be at peace, their creativity took a bullet. There’s a bevy of bright tropical notes and even some “na na na” choruses, tones that are dime a dozen on pop radio. The group is effectively neutered on One More Light: there’s no feral screaming from Chester Bennington, there are barely any riffs, and DJ Hahn has disappeared beneath the textured studio sheen. The closest they toe to “rock” is “Talking to Myself,” which has discernable live drumming from Rob Bourdon and guitar licks from Brad Delson. Otherwise, One More Light is mostly concerned with triumphant anthems (“Battle Symphony” and “Invisible”) and heartfelt confessions (“Sorry for Now” and “Halfway Right”) that end up sounding like the Chainsmokers blended with Twenty One Pilots. Certainly, One More Light will find its defenders, but for fans of their past work, “Good Goodbye” with rappers Pusha T and Stormzy is the closest they come to “aggressive” and “inspired” (even if Shinoda sounds like G-Eazy). Oddly enough, the Kiiara-assisted lead single “Heavy” ends up being one of the only memorable earworms on the album, an undeniably catchy dose of radio-friendly pop that dares listeners to sing along. Here, Linkin Park actually lay out the entire plot of this endeavor by asking “Why is everything so heavy?” With the bandmembers all hovering around their forties, they’ve matured and fully expect fans to do the same, taking huge steps away from the nü metal that established them in the early 2000s. Objectively, that attitude is refreshing, but nonetheless a letdown. From their inception, Linkin Park connected through catharsis. However, many of the emotions presented here are fleeting. The issue isn’t that it’s a pop effort; indeed, they get points for a brave attempt so outside of their wheelhouse. The problem is that much of One More Light is devoid of that visceral charge that previously defined much of their catalog. It’s a provocative challenge that ultimately fails to satisfy.

Recorded: November 2014 at the Tapiola Concert Hall, Finland

As a teenager, Franz Liszt created at least two virtuosic concertos for piano and orchestra, scores which now are lost. The three works gathered here first saw the light of day only a few years later, however, during the 1830’s when Liszt’s career as a young, travelling virtuoso was at its height. The two numbered concertos, which Liszt revised extensively before letting them be published some 25 years after their conception, frame the single-movement Malédiction for piano and strings which Liszt composed in 1833 and revised in 1840, but which was never published in his lifetime. Stepping into Liszt’s shoes for the present recording is Alexandre Kantorow, another very young man. Born in 1997, Alexandre is here supported by his father Jean-Jacques Kantorow conducting the Tapiola Sinfonietta, a team with a number of highly acclaimed recordings to their credit. The recording is Alexandre’s first for BIS, as well as being his début concerto disc, and represents a remarkable achievement by a hugely promising talent, as well as being a vibrant and exciting account of three impassioned scores.

Indie duo, Little Hurricane, the 2-person alternative rock band from San Diego, California, featuring front man Anthony “Tone” Catalano and drummer Celeste “C.C.” Spina is gearing up for the release of their third full-length studio album Same Sun Same Moon on April 14, their first on Mascot Records.

San Diego two-piece return with album number three. With Gold Fever (2014), Tone Catalano and C.C. Spina proved they could turn out a consummate, hook-laden dirty blues-rock stomp. This sometimes-soulful follow-up takes these quantities and stirs in a smattering of keys, chimes and effects. The title track and “For Life” showcase Spina’s undeniable chops behind the drumkit, while “Bad Business” confirms Catalano is capable of mustering ample rustbelt blues-guitar bite. But it’s hard to shake a sense of déjà vu despite the frills: Same Sun adds superficial colour to the already comprehensive palette sketched out by the White Stripes/Black Keys duopoly a decade ago.

If Steven Van Zandt hadn’t added anything to his discography since 1997’s Born Again Savage, he surely had good reason. The first was made clear by his role as Silvio Dante in the series The Sopranos (1999 – 2007) followed by his stint as Frank Tagliano / Giovanni “Johnny” Henriksen in Lilyhammer (2012 – 2014). The second reason was his numerous tours as part of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, for whose leader he remains a right-hand man as well as the go-to guitarist. This Soulfire, released in Spring 2017, is in fact an official album, but slightly different. The man in the head-wrap is having fun covering his own songs, some from his back catalogue, others having been recorded by various musicians. So we can find, nestling away in this cornucopia, a new version of Love On The Wrong Side Of Town that Little Steven co-wrote with the Boss for Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Soulfire takes in other songs written by the Southside Johnny guitarist, alongside covers of Etta James (The Blues Is My Business) and James Brown (Down And Out In New York City). At the outset, Little Steven offers a grand fiesta of classic rock mixed with a muscular rhythm ‘n’ blues and a resonant soul: a cocktail that would not disgrace a certain Bruce S. of New Jersey…

The sixth full-length release for the New Jersey indie rock duo of Brian Sella and Mathew Uychich was produced with Nick Furlong. The album finds The Front Bottoms embracing the impermanence of life and finding flexibility in the face of change. Having relocated band headquarters to the coastal New Jersey community of Asbury Park during the demoing stages of the album, GOING GREY sees the band acknowledging the nostalgia of simpler times with admiration, while welcoming the inevitable unknowns of life.

On Going Grey, their second release for the Warner-distributed Fueled by Ramen label, New Jersey weirdos the Front Bottoms exhibit mild signs of growing up. From their roots as a chaotic lo-fi acoustic punk act to charting high on Billboard’s Top 200 with 2015’s more polished Back on Top, Brian Sella and Matthew Uychich have come a long way with their strange and spazzy brand of indie pop. While Sella’s stream of consciousness confessional vocal rants have been somewhat tamed since his early days, the added structure provides a welcome framework as the band continues to evolve into its next phase. As with their previous release, Going Grey melds a pop punk melodicism with a bit of ’90s indie slackery, adding a bit more pop nuance this time around in the form of some clever synth parts and nice harmonies tucked neatly in the mix. The Front Bottoms have proven their boundless energy many times over, but some of the album’s more midtempo rockers stand out as creative high points like “Bae,” “Grand Finale,” and “Everyone But You.” While they’re not quite low-key offerings, a little restraint here and there does this band some good and shines a light on their abundance of strong melodies. As its title suggests, Going Grey is rife with themes of nostalgia and the passage of time, from the wistful “Vacation Town” to the warm, ’80s-inflected reflections of “Trampoline.” More tonally diverse and thoughtfully arranged than the Bottoms’ previous output, Going Grey is still wily enough to please longtime fans while adding new layers to their sound.

This third album from The Temper Trap comes four years after the Australian band’s last release which won two major ARIA Awards. With trademark choirboy vocals and a panoramic pop/rock sound, The Temper Trap first rose to local acclaim, while word of the group’s potential quickly spread to other continents. For the first time the band members collaborated with an outside songwriter on Thick As Thieves, British writer and producer Justin Parker, best known for his work with Lana Del Rey.

Australia’s Temper Trap deliver a sophisticated, uplifting set of songs on their third full-length album, 2016’s Thick as Thieves. Produced by Damian Taylor (Björk, the Killers, Braids), Thick as Thieves is the first album of new material from Temper Trap since parting ways with lead guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto in 2013. With Sillitto’s departure, keyboardist Joseph Greer began doing double duty on keys and guitars and, surprisingly, as evidenced here, very little has changed in the group’s sound. In fact, Thick as Thieves finds the band digging even deeper into a robust and anthemic guitar-based style that still owes a heavy debt to U2. It’s an apt, if somewhat overstated, comparison that will most likely furrow the brow of longtime Temper Trap fans, if not the bandmembers themselves. Thankfully, it’s not the main takeaway upon listening to Thick as Thieves. Primarily, one is reminded of how powerful and emotive a vocal presence lead singer/guitarist Dougy Mandagi remains. Cuts like the driving “Burn” and the minor-keyed groover “Alive” find Mandagi riding the crest of a thick wave of electric guitars, pulsing synths, and drums. It’s a scintillating combination that brings to mind something along the lines of Cee Lo Green fronting the Killers. It’s also nice to hear Temper Trap continue to expand their sonic palette, deftly weaving in bits of electronic programming and bass-heavy mixes, and taking a generally more measured approach to balladry, as they do on the soaring “Fall Together” and the punky, monochromatic album closer “Ordinary World.” Elsewhere, the band offers up a handful of kinetic, driving numbers like the ’80s power pop-influenced “Riverina” and the sweepingly romantic “Lost,” recalling the infectious joy of “Sweet Disposition.” Ultimately, Thick as Thieves plays like a heartfelt love letter to Temper Trap’s fans who have stuck with them since Conditions. As Mandagi sings on “Lost,” “Nothing in the world can tear us apart.” ~ Matt Collar
