‘A Show Of Hands’ is Victor Wooten’s solo debut, was originally released in 1996 on Compass Records and stands as one of the most critically acclaimed debut solo albums of all time. The release was groundbreaking in that it was recorded with ‘two hands, four strings, and no overdubs’ establishing Wooten as the new major talent to watch on electric bass. 2011 marked the fifteenth anniversary of that album’s release and the album was re-matered and re-released to celebrate this milestone. The new version includes three previously unreleased bonus tracks making this version a must-have for all Wooten fans.

This is one of the most ambitious albums I have run across. The only instrument on it other than bass guitar is voice. Before you come to a sliding stop, give it a moment and listen to the beauty that comes forth from the speakers. “It won’t hold my interest!” you say. “Horse feathers!” say I. This is an album from the heart of a thinking and feeling human, who has so much to give. I was skeptical for about 20 seconds, then I was hooked into it. It is complex/it is simple. It is here/there. Confusing/Straightforward. Straight/Narrow. Big/Small. Top/Bottom. Put it on and open up to the music.

Hyperion’s blossoming Romantic Cello Concerto series welcomes back German virtuoso Alban Gerhardt for this sixth volume. Henry Vieuxtemps and Eugène Ysaÿe are of course best known for their blistering pyrotechnics on the violin, but each of this eminent teacher-and-pupil pairing also wrote two works—little known today, alas—for cello and orchestra, and what a revelation they are. The two Vieuxtemps Concertos contain all the elements familiar from their famous violin counterparts—long-arched melodies alongside moments of outrageous virtuoso demands. The Ysaÿe works are shorter and make ideal companions.
Gerhardt rises to the formidable challenges presented by these composers. Sympathetic orchestral support comes from the Royal Flemish Philharmonic (compatriots of the two composers) and Josep Caballé-Domenech, making his Hyperion conducting debut.

The sixth volume of Hyperion’s ‘Romantic Cello Concerto’ series lights upon two works by the celebrated nineteenth-century Belgian violinist Henri Vieuxtemps. Championed here by Alban Gerhardt, the music shows that Vieuxtemps, perhaps more familiar through his seven violin concertos, possessed also a sensibility for the sonority, technical scope and colour spectrum of the cello. If the First Concerto of 1876 was apparently composed without any particular cellist in mind, the Second of a couple of years later was conceived for Joseph Servais (1850 85), whose father François (1807 66) was responsible for putting the Belgian cello school on the map much as Vieuxtemps did for the violin. If the two cello concertos are not perhaps as exploratory in terms of technique and structure as some of Vieuxtemps’s violin concertos, they certainly know their way round the cello and are characterised by strength of ideas, a supple expressiveness and a sure dramatic instinct. So much so that it is hard to see why they have not entered the mainstream repertoire in the same way as, say, the Saint-Saëns concertos have.
Heinrich Schiff made the first recording of the Vieuxtemps concertos back in the 1980s, since when nobody else seems to have risen to the challenge until now; but these performances by Gerhardt with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic under Josep Caballé-Domenech never fail to hold one’s attention. The fill-ups are by the Vieuxtemps pupil Eugène Ysaÿe—more cello music by a violinist but in the Méditation and Sérénade revealing a confident, alluring touch. –Geoffrey Norris, Gramophone

Though Break Stuff is Vijay Iyer’s third appearance on ECM in less than year, it is the debut offering from the longstanding trio on the label. The pianist and composer has been working with bassist Stephen Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore for more than a decade. They’ve issued two previous recordings together. Iyer usually works conceptually, and Break Stuff is no exception. In the press release he states that “a break in music is still music: a span of time in which to act.” We hear this all the time in modern music, whether it be the sounds that emerge from composer Morton Feldman’s extended silences, breakbeats by funky drummers or hip-hop samples of them, or instrumental breakdowns in heavy metal and bluegrass — they follow a moment where everything previous seems to stop. The Iyer Trio illustrate their concept in a 71-minute program that works from a suite of the same title: three works named for birds were adapted from his multi-media collaboration with author Teju Cole on Open City (illustrating in performance the novel of the same name), three standards, and works that deliver directly on the premise, including the stellar “Hood,” which was inspired by Detroit techno DJ Robert Hood. The head patterns are all single-note and chord pulses, fractioned by Gilmore’s precise skittering beats, breaks, and martial fills, and accented, stretched, and fragmented again by Crump. Despite its staggered parts and shifting dynamics, it is quite organic. The reading of Thelonious Monk’s “Work” commences straightforwardly, following head-solo-head formula, but moves toward the margins in both the pianist’s and bassists’s solos. The trio’s interplay offers a very pointillistic illustration of the composer’s coloristic and rhythmic invention. John Coltrane’s “Countdown” is taken further afield. While it retains the composer’s sense of energy and flow, the pianist breaks down and reassembles its melody and sections with funky snare drops, stop-and-start legato runs, and an exceptionally syncopated bassline. The tune remains utterly recognizable despite their liberties. While opener “Starlings” is the most consciously lyric of the bird pieces, and the band begins to open up into a decidedly internal sense of swing, “Geese,” with its arco basslines, intermittently placed choirs, and brushed snares is almost wholly abstract until its lyric side comes into view little more than half-way through. Billy Strayhorn’s “Blood Count” is performed as a piano solo and played with a lyricism, spaciousness, and taste that would make the composer smile. The title track opens briskly with fleet statements, yet gradually reveals an inherent lyricism via Crump’s solo. Break Stuff is modern jazz on the bleeding edge, a music that not only asks musical questions but answers them, and it does so accessibly and immediately, no matter the form or concept it chooses to express. This trio aims at an interior center, finds it, and pushes out, projecting Iyer & Co.’s discoveries.

Inarticulate Speech Of The Heart is Van Morrison’s 1983 classic. His final album for Warner Bros. Records is a primarily instrumental affair. It features Morrison’s trademark airy arrangements and mystical themes. Standouts include “River Of Time,” “Higher Than The World” and the title-track. It reached the Top Twenty-five in the U.K. This definitive outing is a magnificent blend of rock and Celtic melodies. Absolutely essential.

Almost a forgotten album, Inarticulate Speech of the Heart takes listeners to the deepest, most inward areas of Van Morrison’s renegade Irish soul, the culmination of his spiritual jazz period and also — perhaps not coincidentally — the last record he made for Warner Bros. Four of the 11 tracks are moody instrumentals, which might partly explain the indifference of many rock critics toward the album, although the album’s very title gives a clue to their presence. The mood is predominantly mellow but never flaccid or complacent; there is a radiance that glows throughout. “Higher Than the World” is simply one of the most beautiful recordings Morrison ever made, with Mark Isham’s choir-like synthesizer laying down the lovely backdrop. The instrumental “Connswater” is the most Irish-flavored piece that Morrison had made up to that point, and would continue to be until he recorded with the Chieftains in 1988. “Rave on, John Donne” — in part a recitation invoking a roster of writers over a supple two-chord vamp — seems to have had the longest afterlife, reappearing in Morrison’s live shows and greatest-hits compilations. “The Street Only Knew Your Name” is the only piece that could be classified as a rocker, tempered even here by the synthesizer overlays. The record sold poorly, but many of those who bought it consider it one of the most cherished items in their Van Morrison collections.

Chart History/Awards
– One of Rolling Stone‘s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”
– One of MOJO‘s “100 Best Albums.”
– One of NME‘s “Greatest Albums of All Time.”
– Inducted into the Gramy Hall of Fame in 1999.

1968’s Astral Weeks remains not only Morrison’s masterpiece, but one of the greatest records ever made. A haunting, deeply personal collection of impressionistic folk styled epics recorded by an all star jazz backing unit, its poetic complexity earned critical raves. It is included on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” MOJO’s “100 Best Albums” and NME’s “Greatest Albums of All Time.” Standouts include “Sweet Thing,” “Cyprus Avenue” and “The Way Young Lovers Do.”

Astral Weeks is generally considered one of the best albums in pop music history. For all that renown, Astral Weeks is anything but an archetypal rock & roll album: in fact, it isn’t a rock & roll album at all. Employing a mixture of folk, blues, jazz, and classical music, Van Morrison spins out a series of extended ruminations on his Belfast upbringing, including the remarkable character “Madame George” and the climactic epiphany experienced on “Cyprus Avenue.” Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, Morrison sings in his elastic, bluesy voice, accompanied by a jazz rhythm section (Jay Berliner, guitar, Richard Davis, bass, Connie Kay, drums), plus reeds (John Payne) and vibes (Warren Smith, Jr.), with a string quartet overdubbed. An emotional outpouring cast in delicate musical structures, Astral Weeks has a unique musical power. Unlike any record before or since, it nevertheless encompasses the passion and tenderness that have always mixed in the best postwar popular music, easily justifying the critics’ raves.

A Night in San Francisco is a live album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, released in 1994. Guest artists were Candy Dulfer, John Lee Hooker, Junior Wells and Jimmy Witherspoon as well as Morrison’s daughter, Shana Morrison. James Hunter and Brian Kennedy helped out with the vocals and Georgie Fame was also present.

Van Morrison’s third commercially released live album takes a show format that frequently spotlights the backup band, led by organist/singer Georgie Fame and featuring singers Brian Kennedy and James Hunter, as well as saxophonist Candy Dulfer and blues singers John Lee Hooker, Junior Wells, and Jimmy Witherspoon. Even Morrison’s daughter Shana comes on to sing his “Beautiful Vision.” The material is not limited to Morrison compositions, either. In fact, it isn’t so much that Morrison and company cover a variety of rock, pop, blues, R&B, and jazz standards as that many pieces are medleys that contain complete songs and quotes from others, rather in the way that a jazz soloist will suddenly throw in a few bars of a familiar tune. Those who want to see Morrison as an esoteric singer/songwriter rather than a showman may find this album a mongrel creation, but it’s undeniably lively, and that’s the first requirement of a live album. –AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

His Band And The Street Choir features the top single “Domino,” which continues to be Van Morrison’s most successful single within his solo career. The album also includes classics “Give Me A Kiss,” “Call Me Up in Dreamland” and “Blue Money.” Compared to Morrison’s preceeding hit album Moondance, His Band And Street Choir evokes a more relaxed sound.

After the brilliant one-two punch of Astral Weeks and Moondance, His Band and the Street Choir brings Van Morrison back down to earth, both literally and figuratively. While neither as innovative nor as edgy as its predecessors, His Band and the Street Choir also lacks their overt mysticism; at heart, the album is simply Morrison’s valentine to the R&B that inspired him, resulting in the muscular and joyous tribute “Domino” as well as the bouncy “Blue Money” and “Call Me Up in Dreamland”.

It’s Too Late to Stop Now is a live album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, released in January 1974. Frequently named as one of the best live albums ever recorded, It’s Too Late to Stop Now was recorded during what has often been said to be Morrison’s greatest phase as a live performer. The double album is composed of performances that were recorded in concerts at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, California, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and at The Rainbow in London from a three-month tour with his eleven-piece band, The Caledonia Soul Orchestra, from May to July 1973.

While Van Morrison is, to be kind, an erratic and temperamental live performer, he’s in stellar form throughout the double album It’s Too Late to Stop Now, a superb concert set that neatly summarizes his career from his days with Them (represented by scorching renditions of “Gloria” and “Here Comes the Night”) through 1973’s Hard Nose the Highway (“Warm Love,” “Wild Children”). In addition to the hits, including “Caravan,” “Domino,” and “Into the Mystic” (the final line of which gives the album its title), Morrison even pulls out a handful of R&B chestnuts (“Bring It on Home to Me,” “Ain’t Nothin’ You Can Do”) before capping off the collection with a show-stopping rendition of Astral Weeks’ “Cyprus Avenue.” An engaging, warm portrait of the man at the peak of his powers.

37-track, cross-label career-spanning anthology. All the hits & key album tracks. From Them through to later collaborations with the Chieftains & Cliff Richard.

Timed to coincide with the first-ever digital release of the bulk of Van Morrison’s catalog, 2015’s The Essential Van Morrison is an idiosyncratic double-disc retrospective that runs from Them until a selection from 2009’s Astral Weeks: Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Career-spanning anthologies are a rarity in Morrison’s discography, as are compilations in general; apart from the endless march of Bang material, he’s only had 1990’s The Best of Van Morrison and its 1993 sequel, The Best of Van Morrison, Vol. 2, plus 2007’s Still on Top: The Greatest Hits. The Essential Van Morrison doesn’t merely recycle these compilations. It carves its own path, placing his best-known material from the ’60s and ’70s on the first disc, then covering 1979 and beyond on the second collection. This is a smart move because the truth is, Morrison never had many hits: the last time he crested the Billboard Top 40 was in 1971, when “Blue Money” made it to 23, while his last time in the U.K. Top 40 came in 1989, when “Whenever God Shines His Light” reached 20 with the assistance of Cliff Richard. The latter is here but the former joins “Come Running” as the two biggest omissions here — other smaller ones are the non-LP “Wonderful Remark,” “Full Force Gale,” and “A Sense of Wonder” — but even with their absence, The Essential Van Morrison covers all the necessary ground, delivering the staples while giving a sense of the full run of Morrison’s career.

Van Morrison – Moondance (1970/2013)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 39:09 minutes | 1,47 GB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks.com | © Warner Bros. Records

Chart History/Awards
– Ranked #65 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
– Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
– Peaked at #29 on Billboard’s Pop Albums chart in 1970
– Peaked at #32 in the UK

In the fall of 1969, Van Morrison entered the studio to record Moondance, the album that would soon become his commercial breakthrough and one of the most beloved recordings of all time. This re-release is a high-resolution stereo remaster by the original album engineer Elliot Scheiner.

The yang to Astral Weeks’ yin, the brilliant Moondance is every bit as much a classic as its predecessor; Van Morrison’s first commercially successful solo effort, it retains the previous album’s deeply spiritual thrust but transcends its bleak, cathartic intensity to instead explore themes of renewal and redemption. Light, soulful, and jazzy, Moondance opens with the sweetly nostalgic “And It Stoned Me,” the song’s pastoral imagery establishing the dominant lyrical motif recurring throughout the album — virtually every track exults in natural wonder, whether it’s the nocturnal magic celebrated by the title cut or the unlimited promise offered in “Brand New Day.” At the heart of the record is “Caravan,” an incantatory ode to the power of radio; equally stirring is the majestic “Into the Mystic,” a song of such elemental beauty and grace as to stand as arguably the quintessential Morrison moment.

Tracklist:
01 – And It Stoned Me
02 – Moondance
03 – Crazy Love
04 – Caravan
05 – Into The Mystic
06 – Come Running
07 – These Dreams Of You
08 – Brand New Day

The theatres of London were vital centres for Restoration music after the return of the Stuart monarchy, following the fall of Cromwell’s puritan dictatorship. Reinvigorated by the arrival of women actors and sumptuous decoration, they attracted a broad audience, which had been starved of entertainment after the years of religious rigour and the virtual ban on public performances. The most sought-after composer of the period was Locke, whose experience in this field went back into the Cromwell years. While Puritans did close theatres, some pieces had been able to overcome the ban, like the masque Cupid and Death set to music by Gibbons, which was played for the Portuguese ambassador in 1657 – then again in 1659, with additional music by Locke. When the theatres re-opened in 1660, there was a demand for music for every play, but more as an ornament than as an integral part of the plot. Each one required a series of airs and instrumental pieces to be played at the start and between each act. Locke wrote more than twenty airs of this type, although they can’t be pinpointed to any specific plays. Most of his stage music, like Curtain Tune and Lilk, survive in various manuscripts from the period, and comprises stage music for plays performed in the final decade of the 17th Century. These are the inter-act pieces, airs or “curtain-raisers” which Bertrand Cuiller’s Caravansérail ensemble plays here – Cuiller, remember, learned the harpsichord with Pierre Hantaï and Christophe Rousset. His last solo album, Rameau’s complete works for harpsichord, was declared Classica’s Shock of the Year 2015. The airs here are sung by Scottish soprano Rachel Redmond, a great performer of baroque music.

Thanks to Julien Chauvin and his ensemble La Loge, the programs of the Concert Spirituel’s evenings in the late 18th century Paris come back to life. The so called Haydn’s “symphonies parisiennes” are the core of their musical project which also features contemporary composers, some of them are still unknown.

After “La Reine”, Julien Chauvin and his musicians release “La Poule”, which mischievous doted notes are famous, and Marie-Alexandre Guénin’s Third Symphony. In addition to being a member of the Concert Spirituel’s orchestra as a violinist, Guénin was a teacher and a composer. This score, typical of the Sturm und Drang dramatic gestures, has nothing to envy to the works of his more prominent peers.

The disc ends with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17, K 453 performed by the young and talented Justin Taylor on the fortepiano. His technique allows his sensibility and intelligence to blossom freely so that the soloist can offer a pure moment of delicacy.

One of the great fusion saxophonists, Bob Malach made the move from his hometown of Philadelphia to NYC in 1976. He soon found work with the likes of Stanley Clarke and Alphonse Mouzon (he’s featured on Mouzon’s MPS release Baby Come Back), and was in the studio with Stevie Wonder, Spyro Gyra and the Brecker Brothers. For the first album under his own name, Malach assembled a group of well-known playmates: John Lee and drummer Gerry Brown were high school buddies, and he and keyboardist Jasper van’t Hof had worked together in Mouzon’s group. Malach and French violin star Didier Lockwood were also well-acquainted – Malach would appear on Lockwood’s MPS album “Live in Montreux” later that year. Dutch guitarist Eef Albers had already toured the states with Lee and Brown. The title piece shows that Some People are romantic, some are more on the funky side, as the band slides back and forth between the two. Guitar great John Scofield’s Who’s Who is a funky fusion fest with van’t Hof and Malach showing why they’re at the top of the list. The alluring ballad Three on a Cloud features atmospheric solos by violinist Lockwood and Malach in trio with guitarist Albers. The rock-march feel of Night Walk works as the perfect vehicle for Albers’ strolling guitar solo. Zbiggytism was written in honor of violin great Zbigniew Siefert, and both Malach and Lockwood catch the spirit of the Polish maestro. Van’t Hof’s lyrical Pineu has a nostalgic air to it, as well as Malach’s appropriately poignant solo. By the Way rocks the album out with a Shaft-like rhythm line and a smoking-hot tenor. Nothing ‘out’ or experimental here – just straight-ahead jazz fusion at its best.

One album after another, Cecile McLorin Salvant reminds us she’s anything but the stereotypical “jazz singer”. Revealed to the public in 2013 with her gorgeousWomanChild, she stepped it up a gear two years later with For One To Love, an even more masterful and complete record, on which her voice worked wonders. Born on August 28th, 1989 in Miami, Florida, she studied French law, baroque and vocal jazz in Aix-en-Provence before winning the Thelonious Monk International Competition in 2010 (at only 20, in front of a jury composed of Al Jarreau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Patti Austin, Dianne Reeves and Kurt Elling!). She went on to display impressive qualities as a composer as well with five original songs on her 2015 album. With Dreams And Dagger the French-American, who now lives in Harlem, is releasing a third album recorded live at Village Vanguard, the New York Mecca of jazz, and at the DiMenna Center, supported by her faithful trio (pianist Aaron Diehl, bass player Paul Sikivie and drummer Lawrence Leathers) and some guests on a few tracks, such as Quatuor Catalyst and pianist Sullivan Fortner. A real choice for the artist, who wishes she could only record live albums, the context in which her band’s sound is most faithfully presented. More classic in its form than her two previous works, Dreams And Dagger is proof of her fluency no matter the repertoire. For a classic like My Man’s Gone Now, for which thousands of versions already exist, she embarks with her voice on unique paths, to astounding effect! Furthermore, Cecile McLorin Salvant fully bonds with her trio, which isn’t just a simple stooge for her amazing voice, but an essential part of her musical world. Once again, she blazes an even deeper trail, far from the Billie/Sarah/Ella Holy Trinity, because as Wynton Marsalis put it: “You only get a singer like this once in a generation or two…”.

After Five Years (1969 – 1973) and Who Can I Be Now ? (1974 – 1976), to dive into the box set A New Career In A New Town (1977 – 1982), is to zoom in on David Bowie’s Berlin period. In 1977, Ziggy moored up in the German city, then disfigured by a wall. With Diamond Dogs in 1974 and in particular Young Americans the following year, soul and funk were suffused with a rock’n’roll sound. But this Bowie was to be eclipsed by a colder, more cerebral, experimental Bowie. Always ready to re-invent himself, to follow trends (when he wasn’t setting them himself…) and simply to question things, he flew to Berlin, where things were in motion. Alongside Brian Eno, formerly of Roxy Music, he wrote his famous Berlin trilogy, which opened with Low. On this bizarre record, everything begins with a weird baroque soul instrumental, with electronic textures (Speed of Light), then a balanced mix of songs and other instrumental tracks. Capable of delivering futurist soul (Sound And Vision), a sombre and mysterious symphony (Warszawa), new-wave minimalism that sounded like a Sci-Fi soundtrack (Art Decade) or disjointed, cubist rock (Breaking Glass), this was David Bowie revisiting his experiences with Krautrock from groups like Neu!, Can and Faust, playing with Kraftwerk’s machines but remaining himself: a genially insane savant still ahead of his time.

Driven by an entirely deeper dynamic than most pop artists, David Bowie inhabits a very special world of extraordinary sounds and endless vision. Unwilling to stay on the treadmill of rock legend and avoiding the descent into ever demeaning and decreasing circles of cliché, Bowie writes and performs what he wants, when he wants. His absence from the endless list of “important events” has just fuelled interest. Constant speculation about what the guy was up to has even led some to wonder if this is his greatest reinvention ever.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 1:22:08 minutes | 1,69 GB | Genre: Soundtrack

The original cast recording of Lazarus, a musical with lyrics and music composed and written by David Bowie.

The Lazarus Cast Album is the unique collection of material that includes the last three studio recordings of David Bowie’s storied career (“No Plan”, “Killing A Little Time”, “When I Met You”), recorded with Donny McCaslin and his quartet, the same band that played on Bowie’s final studio album . The songs were co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti.
Lazarus, the musical presented by the New York Theater Workshop in December 2015 and January 2016, was written by David Bowie and Enda Walsh. The show opened to phenomenal critical acclaim. The New York Times raved “Ice-cold bolts of ecstasy shoot like novas through the glamorous muddle and murk of Lazarus, the great-sounding, great-looking and mind-numbing new musical,” while Rolling Stone hailed it as a “Surrealistic Tour de Force… milk-swimming, lingerie-sniffing, gin-chugging theater at its finest.” Lazarus is based on the classic sci-fi novel The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis.
This collection includes the full cast and band of the original New York production with their versions of the David Bowie songs from the show as the Lazarus Cast Album. The album was produced by the show’s musical director Henry Hey, who had previously worked with Bowie on “The Next Day” and features vocals from actors Michael C. Hall, Sophia Anne Caruso, Cristin Milioti, Michael Esper and other cast members backed by the seven-piece house band Hey assembled for the New York run. The album was recorded January 11, 2016. Upon arriving at the studio, the musicians and cast were shocked and saddened to learn that Bowie had passed away the evening before. Their emotional performances that day are captured on this recording.
The production of Lazarus in New York also timed with the January, 2016 release of the David Bowie’s final studio album . Included alongside the cast s interpretations of classics from his canon of material are the three final David Bowie studio recordings “No Plan,” “Killing A Little Time,” “When I Met You” which bring completely new dimensions to their cast counterparts. The original version of “Lazarus” is also included on the Lazarus Cast Album.
Lazarus is based on the classic sci-fi novel The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis. The 1976 film starred Bowie himself as a hollow-eyed humanoid alien (this was during Bowie’s Thin White Duke phase) who comes to the earth in search of water for his drought-ridden home planet. While Lazarus marked Bowie’s first time scoring a stage show, he was no stranger to the world of theatre. His 1979 performance in the Tony-winning The Elephant Man drew rapturous responses from the critics, while of course his myriad musical personas have all had a strong theatrical streak.
