Marquee Moon is a revolutionary album, but it’s a subtle, understated revolution. Without question, it is a guitar rock album — it’s astonishing to hear the interplay between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd — but it is a guitar rock album unlike any other. Where their predecessors in the New York punk scene, most notably the Velvet Underground, had fused blues structures with avant-garde flourishes, Television completely strip away any sense of swing or groove, even when they are playing standard three-chord changes. Marquee Moon is comprised entirely of tense garage rockers that spiral into heady intellectual territory, which is achieved through the group’s long, interweaving instrumental sections, not through Verlaine’s words. That alone made Marquee Moon a trailblazing album — it’s impossible to imagine post-punk soundscapes without it. Of course, it wouldn’t have had such an impact if Verlaine hadn’t written an excellent set of songs that conveyed a fractured urban mythology unlike any of his contemporaries. From the nervy opener, “See No Evil,” to the majestic title track, there is simply not a bad song on the entire record. And what has kept Marquee Moon fresh over the years is how Television flesh out Verlaine’s poetry into sweeping sonic epics. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Beach Boys’ Party! Uncovered and Unplugged is an upcoming compilation and remix album to be released by Capitol Records on November 20, 2015. It is an 81-track expansion of Beach Boys’ Party!

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1965 release of the Beach Boys’ top 10 album Party!, group members have overseen this remixed, remastered and expanded edition, Beach Boys’ Party! Uncovered And Unplugged, which removes the overdubbed party sounds from the 12-track original album’s mix and adds 69 more songs and dialogue tracks culled from all of the band’s Party! recording sessions.

“Mike was saying, why not a party album and we can act like we are (at a party) and just be ourselves on tape, you know? And that’s what happened. It was a very spontaneous album.” –Brian Wilson

Capitol, which had already released ten Beach Boys albums in three years, was bugging the group for product that it could release in time for the 1965 Christmas season. To buy time while Brian Wilson began conceiving the Pet Sounds masterpiece, the group issued a set of covers, featuring ’50s rock and R&B hits they had listened to as schoolboys, plus some newer sounds. Packaged as if it had been recorded at an actual party, it was in fact recorded in the studio over a few sessions, with friends, family and romantic partners adding sounds and vocals to create an informal atmosphere. With the exception of a bass guitar, all the instruments were acoustic; the acoustic guitar-and-bongo arrangements, in fact, give this a hootenanny campfire feel. Since its release, this album has gone up a few notches in critical esteem, praised for its loose, casual feel and insight into the group’s influences. Realistically, though, its lasting appeal lies mostly with dedicated fans of the group, as fun and engaging as it is. It does have the massive hit “Barbara Ann,” which actually features Dean Torrence (of Jan & Dean) on much of the lead vocals; other highlights include a rousing run through “Mountain of Love,” an unexpected version of “The Times They Are a-Changin'” sung by folk fan Al Jardine,” and three Beatles covers. [The 2015 reissue of the album collects everything recorded at the sessions for Party! along with a remastered version of the original album. Along with many, many snippets of dialog that feature the Boys cutting up and cracking wise, there are multiple takes of the songs that feature on the final album (sans crowd noise, as are the rest of the session takes) and quite a few that didn’t make the final cut. Mike Love’s versions of Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me” and Sonny Bono’s “Laugh at Me,” takes of “Ruby Baby,” “(I Can’t Get No (Satisfaction),” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and their own “California Girls” and “Don’t Worry Baby,” among others, were deemed not up to par. It’s a lot to wade through, but if you really love the Party! sessions, it’s time well spent. As a bonus, with a little detective work, one can piece together the original album minus the party sounds from the various sessions.] –Review by Richie Unterberger

Tony Fontane was born Anthony Trankina on Sept. 18, 1925, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After a stint in the Coast Guard during World War II, he hit the nightclub circuits in New York and Chicago hoping for a break as a singer. Using the stage name Tony Fontane, he won the Major Bowes Amateur Hour, which started him on a career as a popular singer. He recorded for Mercury Records, with his biggest hits being “The Syncopated Clock” and “Cold, Cold Heart,” which sold 1.4 million records in 1950. He toured Australia in two shows, and made several hit records in that country. In 1957, back in the United States, Fontane was involved in a car crash that put him in a coma for more than a month and severely threatened his life. After recovering, he devoted his life solely to Christian music and, by the 1960s, was one of the most famous gospel singers in the world. A recording contract with RCA produced 20 or more very successful gospel albums. On June 30, 1974, Fontane died at the age of 48. His funeral at Forest Lawn Memorial Park was attended by an estimated 10,000 people.

I Left My Heart in San Francisco is revered vocalist Tony Bennett’s 1962 album. The record peaked at number 5 on the Billboard pop charts and is one of Bennett’s best selling albums. The record features the popular title track, along with “Smile”, “Love for Sale”, “The Best Is Yet to Come” and more!

Along with his producer, Ernest Altschuler, and his arranger/pianist, Ralph Sharon, Tony Bennett had been searching for a repertoire and a musical approach beyond his long-gone pop work with Mitch Miller of the early ’50s and his artistically pleasing but commercially dicey jazz work of the mid- to late ’50s. It seemed to be a combination of Broadway songs and other contemporary material, carefully selected and arranged to show off Bennett’s now-burnished vocals, which, as he approached the end of his thirties, were starting to be located in a more comfortable range closer to a baritone than a tenor. With this album, they found the key, not only by happening across a signature song in the title track, but also in the approach to songs like “Once Upon a Time,” a gem from the flop musical All American, and Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh’s “The Best Is Yet to Come,” which Bennett helped make a standard. (Frank Sinatra didn’t do it until two years later.) From here on until the world changed again toward the late ’60s, Bennett would not have to feel that he had to compromise his art for popularity, making up-tempo singles in an attempt to meet the marketplace while longing to do ballads and swing material instead. I Left My Heart In San Francisco, a gold-selling Top Ten hit that stayed in the charts almost three years, demonstrated that he could have it all. (Tony Bennett won two 1962 Grammy Awards for the title song: Record of the Year and Best Solo Vocal Performance, Male.) –AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

Snowfall is Tony Bennett’s 1968 Christmas album. Arranged and conducted by Robert Farnon, the album was Tony Bennett’s first Christmas album. Bennett and Farnon had been friends since the early 1950s but had not worked together before recording this album, which included arrangements by Don Costa, Marion Evans, and Torrie Zito.

With British arranger/conductor Robert Farnon handling the transatlantic sessions, Tony Bennett’s 1968 Christmas album turned into a swinging affair, from the version of “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music (how did this song become associated with Christmas?) to seasonal standards like “White Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Bennett’s warm style was especially winning on this kind of material, making an inevitable assignment a winning combination of singer and songs. –AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: Mora.jp | Artwork: Front cover | @ Red Telephone Box

Everything At Once’ is the brand new ten track studio album by Travis released on their own label Red Telephone Box and features the new single ‘3 Miles High’ a beautifully understated and uplifting acoustic track, featuring backing vocals from up and coming Norwegian artist Aurora. Written by Travis and produced by Michael Ilbert at the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin, ‘Everything At Once’ positively overflows with conviction and confidence; pushing boundaries while maintaining their classic sound.

Over the span of almost three decades, Scottish indie rock stalwarts Travis have persevered, both holding faithful to the sound that they helped break into the U.K. mainstream in the ’90s and rocking long enough to watch their sonic progeny spread their wings and fly off in various artistic directions (see: Coldplay, Keane, Snow Patrol). And through it all, Travis remained reliable, seldom veering too far from the center. On their eighth album, Everything at Once – a long-form commentary on modern life in the 21st century – they revive familiar sounds and also push themselves into more cheerful and unencumbered directions. Vocalist Fran Healy’s voice remains tender as ever on plaintive throwbacks like the strumming “All of the Places” and the warm “What Will Come,” both of which would fit seamlessly on The Man Who or The Invisible Band. Rougher-edged moments like the ’90s nostalgic “Radio Song” and the Muse-lite Wild West epic “Paralysed” sidle up nicely with the darker 12 Memories or Ode to J.Smith, their heaviest album to date. The highlights are the three most surprising tracks on Everything. “Magnificent Time” – inspired, in part, by Keane’s Tim Rice-Oxley – is a positively ebullient number that bursts with joy. Within the Travis discography, it’s a bit jolting – think “Selfish Jean” with a lot more sunshine – but the band’s happiness is infectious. The title track, penned by bassist Dougie Payne, injects a funky strut to the album, with a slinky bassline and speak-singing reminiscent of Achtung Baby/Zooropa-era U2. “Idlewild,” a magical duet with English singer/songwriter Josephine Oniyama, pops up toward the end of the album. There’s a slightly disconcerting tone, despite the gorgeous manner in which Healy and Oniyama trade off verses, like a less scary version of Nick Cave’s Murder Ballad duet with Kylie Minogue. The album closes with the uplifting radio-ready U2-meets-OneRepublic “Strangers on a Train.” All at once, it reflects both the bands that influenced them and the ones that they have influenced over the years. The album’s title may refer to modern society’s urge for instant gratification, but it also provides a symbolic nod to what Travis have done over the course of their career. Everything at Once is their liveliest and most lighthearted effort to date, a celebration of both their legacy and their maturity.

Recorded on April 2nd, 2012 at Studio Eleven Hilversum, the Netherlands

Harry and Michel, our good friends and advisors from the High End audio shop ”Rhapsody” in Hilversum, were celebrating the shops 25th anniversary.

They invited master bassist Tony Overwater and pianist extraordinaire Bert van den Brink to come and play a concert in the listening room of the shop.

The room was filled to the brim with audio enthusiasts, the closest listener being just a few feet from the musicians and the microphones.

When the audience is so close to the musicians, a synergy occurs. The audience becomes part of the music making and help spur the musicians on to great heights. The musicians feeling the empathy from the audience dare to take chances that one rarely hears in a studio recording. Tony and Bert had not performed together as a duo before, and no rehearsal had taken place prior to the Rhapsody concert, but the music these two masters of improvisation created that sunny afternoon in Rhapsody, is simply breathtaking.

The recording conditions were not ideal. The doors in the back of the room were opened several times by people trying to squeeze in, making the sound from the espresso machine in the hall and the DJ playing ambient music in the garden faintly audible at the beginning of each set. Later halfway through the concert the windows of the room had to be opened for air. The DJ turned off his music but he was immediately replaced by the sound of birds singing. If listening closely one can hear them, chime in, in the quiet parts.

These outside factors contributed to the unique atmosphere of this recording and that is yet another reason why; Impromptu (a musical composition prompted by the spirit of the moment) is such an apt title.

Originally released on 10-inch vinyl in early 1955, this album spotlights some of the best from Blue Note’s West Coast jazz roster of the day, as the title implies, recorded in Los Angeles and featuring prominent jazz musicians from both coasts such as Harry “Sweets” Edison, Stan Levey, Conte Candoli and Marty Paich. The “blindfold test” refers to the fact that this was originally issued with no credits, presenting a challenge to jazz fans to identify the players who were only revealed on the second volume of this series.

This note appeared on the original record jacket: “We’re curious to see which of Blue Note’s customers, long noted for their astute jazz tastes and discernment, can come up with a complete or at least partially correct answer”.

The world’s best-known boys’ choir begins its close cooperation with Universal Music with a major Christmas album. With the likes of Rolando Villazón and Aida Garifullina, the Choir Boys have invited two stars of classical music to be their guests. And instrumental support is provided by the band WienerWunderAllerlei and the brass ensemble phil Blech Wien.

Under the title Merry Christmas from Vienna/Frohe Weihnachten, the Vienna Boys Choir commences its partnership agreed in January with the world’s largest music group, Universal. With 18 Christmas songs, the children’s choir, representing one of Austria’s major cultural exports, embarks on a musical journey through the centuries.

Several pieces from the repertoire traditionally sung on Christmas Eve, such as Fröhliche Weihnacht überall or Leise rieselt der Schnee by the German pastor Eduard Ebel, form the recording’s core. These carols, well-known and cherished throughout the entire German-speaking world, are complemented by musical gems of Austrian origin.

But the Vienna Boys Choir wouldn’t be the globally successful choir it is if it didn’t always look beyond its own cultural horizon. As a result, Il est né le divin enfant or Joy To The World offer a glimpse of French and Anglo-Saxon Christmas traditions. This also applies to the English version of Adolphe Adam’s O Holy Night, for which audience favourite Rolando Villazón makes a guest appearance on the new album.

After all, cooperation with other musicians comes naturally to the Vienna Boys Choir. It continues to uphold this spirit even when it comes to THE Christmas Carol of all Christmas Carols, winning the support of Russian soprano Aida Garifullina, one of the Vienna State Opera’s rising ensemble members, for Stille Nacht. In four additional songs, the choir boys demonstrate that cooperation often goes hand in hand with the expansion of one’s own realm.

The renowned ensemble phil Blech Wien serves as a sparring partner for the young vocal artists in the two US Christmas classics Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and Let It Snow. Widely known at least since their performance in the intermission film of the New Year’s Concert 2013, the combination of brass instruments with two drum sets contributes its own rhythmic dynamism to the familiar sounds. The same holds true for the unusual line-up of the WienerWunderAllerlei quartet, with an instrumental repertoire ranging from saxophones to toys and with which the Boys Choir interprets Jingle Bells and the melancholy war protest song Happy Christmas (War Is Over) by John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Most of the arrangements on the album were written by the President of the Boys  Choir, Gerald Wirth, himself. “Christmas is the time when everyone loves listening to boys’ choirs, says the choir’s artistic director, feeling confident about the new recording. And also Hannes Eder, Managing Director of Universal Music Austria, is impressed by the new partner: “Some consider them the country’s top export, others see them as the world’s oldest boy group, and to everyone they are certainly one of the most well-known brands of culture in Austria.”

As such, Merry Christmas from Vienna/Frohe Weihnachten is only the prelude to a long-term cooperation, in the context of which plans are to implement one joint project every year.

Recorded at St Mary Magdalene Church, Willen, Milton Keynes, 20, 24, 27 March, 14, April & 6 August 2015 (24bit, 96kHz hi-resolutin recording & mastering)

A fascinating, joyous set of rare works by the 18th century Austrian composer/violinist Vilsmaÿr, published it its entirety for the first time here, 300 years after its first publication. Many of the Partitas adopt what is called Scodatura, where open strings are tuned differently to standard tuning, adding some interesting colours to the music. Pisendel was a famous Baroque violinist and composer. His fiendishly difficult Solo Violin Sonata in A minor is an unpredictable, tempestuous and capricious work, showing great scope and ambition in the development of the violin. To round of the recording, the famous Passaglia in G minor by Biber, a sombre, moving work and a perfect end to this noteworthy 2CD set.

The first time you listen to this disc you will undoubtedly be transported directly back to your childhood. Charles Schulz’s Peanuts characters will go toe-tapping and funky-dancing through your mind’s eye. Play it a few more times, though (ignoring the dialogue snippets, if you can), and you will begin to truly revel in Guaraldi’s wonderful, humorous, deep piano playing. You’ll hear why he’s such an influence on new age ivory tickler George Winston, but you’ll also realize that Winston’s holiday music never quite sparkles with the underlying passion, and humor, that twinkles in these grooves. Buy it for the nostalgia–keep it because it will remain one of the most enchanting albums in your holiday collection.

“Imagine my delight when HDtracks released not one but two hi-res versions of one of my all-time favorite albums. As good as the CD is, the downloads are in a different league. Guaraldi’s piano is so much more dynamic, it’s as if someone raised the lid. The difference is audible within the first half dozen notes of Linus and Lucy. Moreover, the entire presentation is more spacious, and the chorus sounds even more natural, with individual singers easy to discern. The 192/24 version dispenses with the very subtle digital patina that coats the 96/24’s piano, and the chorus is clearer still. However, the less crisp 96/24 version is also mellower and more forgiving. The choice is a matter of preference, but I can’t imagine anyone being less than thrilled”musically and sonically”with either of these downloads.” – Alan Taffel, The Absolute Sound

Recorded: in April 2014, Santuario di Ariadello, Soresina (Italy)

At the dawn of the 20th century, Naive music label decided to uncover and release some 450 of Vivaldi’s works held at the National University Library of Turin – many of which had hardly had the honour of being recorded. This amazing collection is a personal library handwritten by Vivaldi, and is the largest collection of scores that belonged to the eighteenth century composer to have survived to the present day. The thirty-nine bassoon concertos by Vivaldi constitute the largest collection of works devoted to this noble instrument. Clearly, the creativity of Vivaldi was greatly boosted by the phenomenal flexibility and nostalgic sound of the bassoon, which is still remarkable in the way it can “imitate” the human voice. It should also be emphasized that Vivaldi, a violinist, was always very attracted to the instruments with deep range. So much so that apart from the considerable number of works he dedicated to his own instrument, it is for bassoon and cello that he composed the greatest number of works. It is Italian bassoonist Sergio Azzolini who offers these six concertos, the fourth component of an box set published by Naive. The richness and invention of Vivaldi makes for an exhilirating listening experience from start to finish. © SM / Qobuz

For a heavy metal band that’s been around for nearly three decades, selling more than thirty-eight million albums worldwide, earning numerous accolades including eleven GRAMMY nominations, scoring five consecutive Platinum albums-including 1992’s two-million-selling Countdown To Extinction-Megadeth’s founder, leader and primal guitar-slinger and lyricist Dave Mustaine feels the best is yet to come. Super Collider is the band’s highly anticipated fourteenth studio album.

Megadeth’s 14th studio outing finds the venerable metal outfit parting ways with Roadrunner Records, but not with producer Johnny K (Disturbed, Staind), who brought some much needed sonic heft to 2011’s Th1rt3en. Super Collider is indeed big and beefy, but it’s awfully light on flavor. Things start out promisingly enough with the blistering “Kingmaker,” a thrashy, cautionary tale about oxycontin that evokes classic Megadeth, but any residual warm and fuzzy feelings vanish abruptly upon the arrival of the surprisingly out of character title cut, a rote, state fair-ready, light beer-hoisting rocker that sounds like a late-’80s/early-’90s Tesla or AC/DC throwaway (actually, how did Megadeth release an album called Super Collider before AC/DC?), which is exactly the kind of thing that the band has not only avoided, but brazenly stood against since its 1983 inception. Also, why is there a painting of Iron Man on the back cover? Things certainly don’t improve with the limp “Burn!,” an artless slab of gym metal that finds the normally erudite Dave Mustaine rhyming fire with desire, a desire that “burns hotter than hell.” In fact, outside of “Kingmaker,” the banjo-led Rob Zombie-meets-Mark Lanegan lament “Blackest Crow” and the outstanding “Built for War,” a surprisingly agile, apocalyptic anti-anthem which was co-written with drummer Shawn Drover and guitarist Chris Broderick, the latter of whom supplies the cut with some truly impressive riffage, Super Collider is so mired in midtempo drudgery and familiar hard rock (not thrash) tropes that it never really connects.

Rust In Peace is held in high regard in the metal community as one of the best thrash/speed metal albums of all time; debuting at #23 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. and #8 in the U.K. The album showcased a much tighter sound, with Mustaine’s writing style adopting a rhythmically complex progressive edge. The musicianship is tight, lyrics are personal, and the sense of amazement never ends. Quite possibly the best combination of intensity and technicality to be found. The album received Grammy nominations in 1990 and 1991 for “Best Metal Performance”.

A sobered-up Mustaine returns with yet another lineup, this one featuring ex-Cacophony guitar virtuoso Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza, for what is easily Megadeth’s strongest musical effort. As Metallica was then doing, Mustaine accentuates the progressive tendencies of his compositions, producing rhythmically complex, technically challenging thrash suites that he and Friedman burn through with impeccable execution and jaw-dropping skill. Thanks to Mustaine’s focus on the music rather than his sometimes clumsy lyrics, Rust in Peace arguably holds up better than any other Megadeth release, even for listeners who think they’ve outgrown heavy metal. While the whole album is consistently impressive, the obvious highlight is the epic, Eastern-tinged “Hangar 18.” –AllMusic Review by Steve Huey

Megadeth’s vital, Platinum-certified album, Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?, has been digitally remastered for the first time. Released in 1986, Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying? was Megadeth’s second album and the band’s first Capitol/EMI release. The acclaimed album thrust Megadeth into the international spotlight, and it remains a powerful thrash metal staple.

Arguably Megadeth’s strongest effort and a classic of early thrash, Peace Sells combines a punkish political awareness with a dark, threatening, typically heavy metal world-view, preoccupied with evil, the occult, and the like. The anthemic title track and “Wake Up Dead” are the two major standouts, and there is also a cover of Willie Dixon’s “I Ain’t Superstitious,” which takes on an air of supernaturally induced paranoia in the album’s context. The lines between hell and earth are blurred throughout the album, and the crashing, complex music backs up Dave Mustaine’s apocalyptic vision of life as damnation — his limited vocal style is used to great effect, growling and snarling in a barely intelligible fashion under all the complicated guitar work. Vital, necessary thrash. –AllMusic Review by Steve Huey
