Bad As Me is the first studio recording in over seven years from influential singer/songwriter Tom Waits. The exquisite album triumphs as one of his finest performances in a long and established career. Waits’ unparalleled songwriting, raspy vocals and masterful arrangements are on full display. Included is the beautiful ballad “Last Leaf,” a bluesy “Talking at the Same Time,” a gospel “Satisfied,” and more. This high resolution recording is the perfect way to experience one of music’s most important songwriters.

Bad as Me is Tom Waits’ first collection of new material in seven years. He and Kathleen Brennan — wife, co-songwriter, and production partner — have, at the latter’s insistence, come up with a tight-knit collection of short tunes, the longest is just over four minutes. This is a quick, insistent, and woolly aural road trip full of compelling stops and starts. While he’s kept his sonic experimentation — especially with percussion tracks — Waits has returned to blues, rockabilly, rhythm & blues, and jazz as source material. Instead of sprawl and squall, we get chug and choogle. For “Chicago” — via Clint Maedgen’s saxes, Keith Richards’ (who appears sporadically here) and Marc Ribot’s guitars, son Casey Waits’ drums, dad’s banjo, percussion and piano, and Charlie Musselwhite’s harmonica (he appears numerous times here, too) — we get a 21st century take on vintage R&B. Indeed, one can picture Big Joe Turner fronting this clattering rush of grit and groove, and this album is all about groove. Augie Meyers appears on Vox organ and Flea on bass to guide Waits’ tablas and vocals on “Raised Right Men,” a 12-bar stagger filled with delightful lyrical clichés from an America that has passed on into myth — Waits does nothing to de-mystify this; he just makes it greasy and danceable. The slow, spooky “Talking at the Same Time” is still in blues form albeit with ska-styled horns to make things more exotic, as Waits waxes about the current state of economic affairs. He showcases history’s circular nature as he bridges our national narrative from 1929-1941, and up to the present day: “Well it’s hard times for some/For others it’s sweet/Someone makes money when there’s blood in the street…Well we bailed out all the millionaires/They got the fruit/We got the rind…” Rockabilly rears its head on “Get Lost,” with David Hidalgo strutting a solid ’50s guitar snarl above the horns. Dawn Harms’ violin and Patrick Warren’s keyboards add textural dimension to Hidalgo’s and Ribot’s arid guitars on the apocalyptic blues of “Face to the Highway,” with Waits offering startling, contrasting images in gorgeous rhymes. This track, and the two proceeding ones — the forlorn carny ballad “Pay Me” and the wasted lover’s plea in the West Texas mariachi of “Back in the Crowd” — set up the latter half of the record, where there are more hard-edged blues and rockers, such as the spiky stomping title track, the cracked guitar ramble in “Satisfied,” and the clattering, percussive anti-war rant “Hell Broke Luce” (sic). Between each of these songs are ballads. In the jazzy nightclub blues of “Kiss Me” and the country-ish folk of “Last Leaf” lie lineage traces to Waits’ earliest material: the latter features Richards in a delightfully ruined vocal duet. Indeed, even the set-closer “New Year’s Eve,” with Hidalgo’s guitars and accordion in one of Waits’ signature saloon songs, quotes from “Auld Lang Syne” in the song’s waning moments to send the platter off on a bittersweet, nostalgic note, reminding the listener of Waits’ use of “Waltzing Matilda” in “Tom Traubert’s Blues” all those years ago. Brennan’s instincts were dead-on: it was time for a set of brief, tightly written and arranged songs — something we haven’t actually heard from Waits. Bad as Me is an aural portrait of all the places he’s traveled as a recording artist, which is, in and of itself, illuminating and thoroughly enjoyable.

Rush’s 1989 live release features performances from New Orleans, Phoenix, San Diego, and Birmingham (UK). The album went gold in the US and platinum in Canada, peaking at #21 on the Billboard Top 200 in 1989.

Although keyboards dominated Rush’s 1989 double live set A Show of Hands, it’s a definite improvement over its somewhat flat predecessor, 1981 ‘s Exit…Stage Left. The band’s music isn’t as hard rock-based as it previously was, evidenced by the more modern-sounding compositions selected for this third live album (the first Rush album to be produced completely by the band). The only tracks from the pre-1982 period to be featured are “Closer to the Heart,” which is expanded to include a jamming section at the end, and the spooky “Witch Hunt,” originally from 1981’s Moving Pictures. The remainder of the album’s track list is comprised of Rush’s best compositions from 1982-1987, such as “Subdivisions,” “Distant Early Warning,” “Force Ten,” “Time Stand Still,” and “Red Sector A,” as well as several tracks that have been forgotten over time (“Marathon,” “Turn the Page,” “Mission,” etc.). Also featured for the first time on a live Rush album is a completely unaccompanied drum solo by Neil Peart – the intricate “Rhythm Method.” The inspired A Show of Hands is an excellent snapshot of Rush in concert during the mid- to late ’80s.

Hold Your Fire is the twelfth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released on September 8, 1987.

Rush’s 1987 release Hold Your Fire blends the band’s trademark progressive rock with more eclectic musical influences, drawn largely from traditional Chinese music. Although the songs on the album feature nearly as much synthesizer and keyboard as its predecessor, Power Windows, the guitar riffs and solos are considerably more prominent here. The single Time Stand Still, a US number three rock hit, includes guest vocals from Aimee Mann of ‘Til Tuesday, marking Rush’s first collaboration with another singer.

Hold Your Fire is an album in the purest sense; infinitely greater than the sum of its parts, it gradually draws in the listener by slowly revealing its nuances and secrets. While the use of keyboards is still overwhelming at times, Geddy Lee employs lush textures which, when coupled with a greater rhythmic and melodic presence from guitarist Alex Lifeson, results in a far warmer sound than in recent efforts. Of course, drummer Neil Peart is as inventive and exciting as ever, while his lyrics focus on the various elements (earth, air, water, fire) for much of the album. Opener “Force Ten” is the band’s most immediate number in years, and other early favorites such as “Time Stand Still” and “Turn the Page” soon give way to the darker mysteries of “Prime Mover” and “Tai Shan.” The multifaceted “Lock and Key” is quintessential Rush, and sets the stage for the album’s climax with the sheer beauty of “Mission.” As was the case with 1976’s 2112 and 1981’s Moving Pictures, Rush always seem to produce some of their best work at the end of each four-album cycle, and Hold Your Fire is no exception.

Power Windows is Rush’s 11th studio album originally released in 1985. The record featured hits “The Big Money,” “Manhattan Project,” “Mystic Rhythms” and more.

Released in 1985, Power Windows launched an era of new sonic directions for Rush as the band embraced an extensive use of synthesizers. Neil Peart’s lyrics focus primarily on various manifestations of power: Manhattan Project explores the origins and consequences of the US military’s development of the atomic bomb, while Territories is a statement on nationalism around the world. This is the 2015 remastered version of the album.

Like much of the band’s ’80s output, Power Windows finds Rush juggling their hard-rock heritage with new technology to mixed results. With Alex Lifeson choosing sparse, horn-like guitar bursts over actual crunch, Geddy Lee’s synthesizers running rampant, and Neil Peart’s crisp, clinical percussion and stark lyrical themes (evoking cold urban landscapes), the result just may be the trio’s “coldest” album ever. Still, it does boast its share of important tracks in “Marathon” and “Manhattan Project,” while offering an energetic, tongue-in-cheeck hit single in “The Big Money.” In an album that rewards patience (repeated listens are the key), the most gripping moments are saved for last, with the beautifully eerie textures of “Mystic Rhythms,” a song that was later used as a concert drum solo showcase for Peart.

Presto is Rush’s debut album on Atlantic Records. This 1989 masterpiece features the hit singles “Show Don’t Tell,” “Superconductor” and “The Pass.” “Show Don’t Tell” reached #1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Singles and the album reached the Billboard 200. It would be certified Gold in the U.S. and Platinum in Canada.

After being slagged off for the electronic ambience of its predecessor releases such as 1985’s Power Windows and 1984’s Grace Under Pressure, Rush bounced back with their 13th release, Presto. Yet again the prog-rock trio proved that their tight guitar work and lyrical originality was not long lost or overlooked in an attempt to secure the latest technical flash. Rupert Hine’s production work totally brings things to the forefront by molding solid piano breaks instead of the typical adventure-like synthesizers into Alex Lifeson’s spellbinding guitar work. The sound quality is strong and thick, making the sounds of Presto complete. Neil Peart also makes headway with his natural percussion power, and Geddy Lee’s trademark delivery of Peart’s lyrical complexities shine like signature Rush perfectionism. Songs like “Scars” and “Superconductor” are sonically firm, but “Show Don’t Tell” is the album’s infectious standout that’s heightened thanks to Lee’s stunning vocal wizardry. Presto intelligently leads Rush into the ’90s without musical bleakness. They weren’t ones to be blinded by such creative mediocrity anyway.

Recorded during two sold-out hometown shows at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto in June 2015, R40 Live is a career-spanning live retrospective from Rush, celebrating the band’s over 40 years together. The centrepiece is the remarkable setlist, as Rush works backwards from the most recent to the oldest songs in the band’s catalogue.

Recorded and filmed over two (sold-out, of course) evenings at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre in the midst of the band’s 35-date North American R40 tour, the aptly named R40 Live finds Rush at a crossroads. On the one hand, it’s a festive affair that sees the stalwart trio performing a lethal mix of classics, deep cuts, and recent triumphs with the gusto of men many years younger, but that carnival atmosphere is tempered by the fact that after 41 years, the band may be finally exiting stage left. Neil Peart’s chronic tendonitis may be the biggest contributing factor to the band’s retirement from the road, but one would be hard-pressed to find any flaws in his performance. In fact, R40 Live may be the band’s most dynamic live LP to date. Boasting a career-spanning set list that works its way backwards, beginning with a thunderous rendition of 2012’s Clockwork Angels highlight “The Anarchist,” R40 Live is best experienced with the show’s visuals intact, as the band pairs each song with the era-correct tour staging, from the whimsical laundromat dryers of the 1990s to the pared-down classic rock/curtained theater vibe of the 1970s. Also, fans of the band’s oft-used comical tour videos will be treated to a bevy of special guests including the likes of Les Claypool, Peter Dinklage, Chad Smith, Jason Segal and Paul Rudd, Tom Morello, and Jay Baruchel, but there’s still plenty of pure audio to please the hardcore base. All of the usual suspects are accounted for (“Tom Sawyer,” “The Spirit of Radio,” “Closer to the Heart,” “2112,” “Subdivisions,” etc.), but the addition of Permanent Waves fave “Jacob’s Ladder” and Signals’ “Losing It,” the former of which hasn’t been performed live since 1980 and the latter which finds its way to the stage for the very first time, helps to make the delightful R40 Live a must for any true Rush devotee.

Roll the Bones is the fourteenth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released in 1991. It was recorded at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec and McClear Place in Toronto, Ontario with Rupert Hine returning as producer. The album won the 1992 Juno Award for best album cover design. Roll the Bones became Rush’s first US Top 5 album since 1981’s Moving Pictures, peaking at #3 on the Billboard 200. It also achieved an RIAA certification of platinum, the latest Rush album to date to do so.

From a lyrical perspective, 1991’s Roll the Bones is quite possibly Rush’s darkest album (most of the songs deal with death in no uncertain terms), but from a musical point of view, the record treads territory (highbrow melodic hard rock) similar to its recent predecessors, with only a few surprises thrown in for good measure. These include an amusing rap section in the middle of the title track, a welcome return to instrumentals with “Where’s my Thing?,” and one of the band’s finest songs of the ’90s in the gutsy “Dreamline.” “Neurotica” is another highlight which lives up to its title, and though their negative subject matter can feel stifling at times, fine tracks like “Bravado,” “The Big Wheel,” and “Heresy” feature wonderful melodies and arrangements.

For Simon Rattle, Jean Sibelius is “one of the most staggeringly original composers that there is”. And indeed, this music has a unique musical language whose many beauties are particularly succinctly conveyed in Sibelius’s seven symphonies. There is sonorous warmth as much as there is austere Nordic folklore. Moreover, there is a conceptual boldness that takes the listener on exciting musical journeys of discovery. In 2015, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Sibelius’s birth, Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker presented the cycle live, which was met with unanimous delight by audiences and critics alike. “The Philharmoniker show that with them and Simon Rattle, Sibelius is in excellent hands,” wrote the Berliner Zeitung, “because the orchestra has that astringency and sheer power which is so important for this kind of music.”

Simon Rattle was familiar with the music of Jean Sibelius from childhood. When, as a ten-year-old, he heard the Fifth Symphony live for the first time, it struck him – to use his own words – “like a thunderbolt”. The Berliner Philharmoniker can also look back on a long Sibelius tradition and the orchestra was conducted by the composer himself in 1902. However, the first complete performance of the seven symphonies was not realised until 2010 under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle, with the Third Symphony being performed by the Philharmoniker for the first time. For many music lovers in Berlin, this new encounter with Sibelius was an exhilarating experience, and so it was only natural to repeat the performance of the cycle in Sibelius’s anniversary year.

The complete recording of the symphonies is now being released in an exclusive edition. The edition presents the symphonies not only on 4 CDs, but also on two Blu-ray discs as HD video, in uncompressed audio resolution and DTS surround sound. The extensive product features include a comprehensive booklet and an hour-long video interview in which Sir Simon Rattle talks about his views on Sibelius and introduces the seven symphonies.

An essential library collection chronicling the sonic evolution and abiding achievements of the unprecedented R&B ensemble, The Isley Brothers: The RCA Victor and T-Neck Album Masters (1959-1983) follows The Isley Brothers through their transformation from a 1950’s doo-wop/gospel vocal group into the world’s preeminent R&B rock ‘n’ soul powerhouse party band. As evidenced in this quarter century of recordings, The Isley Brothers absorbed the music and culture surrounding them to continually create contemporary sounds spanning the decades.    The Isley Brothers: The RCA Victor and T-Neck Album Masters (1959-1983) features newly remastered versions of The Isley Brothers’ 21 albums released for both labels, nearly all of which are expanded with rare mixes and tracks making their CD debut. The new collection includes 84 rare and previously unreleased bonus tracks.   This set also includes, released here for the first time in its entirety, the “Great Lost Isley Brothers Album”: Wild In Woodstock: The Isley Brothers Live At Bearsville Sound Studio 1980. First conceived as a “live” double album (with overdubbed crowd noise), this newly restored performance offers an immersive look at a crucial chapter in The Isley Brothers’ history, a pivotal moment in the fusion of rock and funk music in an era fueled by the sound of the Isleys.    The Isley Brothers: The RCA Victor and T-Neck Album Masters (1959-1983) offers new music fans an opportunity to revisit the seminal R&B sounds that continue to reverberate through contemporary soul, rock, hip-hop and pop records.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 44:41 minutes | 1.43 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: soundliaison.com | @ Sound Liaison

Cajan Witmer came up with the idea of recording a collection of songs, with the focus primarily on the melody and have every improvisation and embellishment being inspired by the song itself.
Witmer’s almost vocal presentation of the melody and refined melodic improvisations, Slinger’s lyrical touch and strong secure rhythmic feel combined with Kruiswijk’s inventive drum patterns, which on some songs resembles 3 subtle percussion players instead of one drumset, are fulfilling the task admirably.
Cajan Witmer and his companions, bassist Han Slinger and drummer Maarten Kruiswijk, has worked together for 21 years, and the empathy they feel for each other is evident throughout this recording.

When creating the sound stage, we spent a great deal of time getting the balance of the trio as optimal as possible using the ambient microphone stereo pair placed in the ”sweet spot” in studio 2, before adding the spot microphones.
We wanted to create a sound field that was intimate but also with enough depth to have a visual representation of the instruments.
In a sense we adopted the same philosophy as Cajan Witmer in his arrangements, we wanted the melodic part of each instrument to stand out but not overshadow the whole, thus the paino and the drums have been given a position in the sound field, not spread out Left to Right as are more common in commercial recordings.
The benefit with this approach is that you can actually see the trio in front of you between the speakers, standing left to right, instead of the more common, commercial radio friendly approach, with the instruments piled on top of each other.
In a sense we are old fashioned, maybe we listened to too many old jazz recordings, but on the other hand……..
”The memory of things gone is important to a jazz musician. Things like old folks singing in the moonlight in the back yard on a hot night or something said long ago.”

Giuseppe Verdi – Aida – Jonas Kaufmann, Anja Harteros, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Antonio Pappano (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 2:25:46  minutes | 2.39 GB | Genre: Classical

Recorded at the Sala Santa Cecilia, Auditorium Parco della Musica, Rome, II.2015

This magnificent recording of Aida, made in Rome, rises to all the musical and dramatic challenges presented by Verdi’s richly-coloured Egyptian epic. Antonio Pappano, once again proving his mastery of Italian opera, moves between sumptuous grandeur and touching intimacy. The responses of the Orchestra e Coro dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia are both immediate and vibrant, while the singers – Anja Harteros, Jonas Kaufmann, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Ludovic Tézier and Erwin Schrott – do justice to every facet of their roles.

Gramophone Recording of the Month: “A magnificent achievement that gives enormous pleasure…Karajan has the Vienna Philharmonic but it is arguable that Pappano goes one better, with orchestral playing of rare accomplishment from an Italian ensemble which is alive to the opera’s every word.”
“Close your eyes and imagine the perfect Aida…An incredibly visual rendition of the work – a testament to the importance of studio recordings.” -The Times
“Studio recordings of large-scale operas are something of a rarity these days, and this new recording…feels like a very special event. Kaufmann makes his debut in the role of Egyptian general Rademès, Anja Harteros also makes her role debut as the captive Ethiopian princess Aida. Erwin Schrott (as Ramfis), Ekaterina Semenchuk (Amneris) and Marco Spotti (King of Egypt) are among the other singers in a starry cast.” -The Guardian
“An ensemble of qualities as impressive as the pyramids of Cairo. We can confirm without hesitation that this is not just an Aida for the present, but an Aida made to last, at the same level as the benchmark recordings of the past.” -Diapason
The Sunday Times – Album of the Week “Pappano’s orchestra weave magical sound spells…Unmissable”
BBC Radio 3 “It’s a triumph…The strings of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia melt the heart with their playing in that final scene and the Chorus throughout is as passionately involved as you suspect only an Italian chorus can be”.

Recorded at the private studio of Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer in July, 1970

Pianist Oscar Peterson joins up with his old friends, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and bassist Ray Brown, in addition to his drummer of the period, Louis Hayes, for a particularly enjoyable outing. After a throwaway version of the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” the all-star quartet performs Jackson’s title cut, Benny Carter’s ballad “Dream of You,” and four standards. Although not up to the excitement of Peterson’s best Pablo recordings of the 1970s, this is an enjoyable album. –AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

Official Digital Download – Source: AcousticSounds |  © Riverside Records
Recorded: June 2, 1962 (#2-4, 6, 7); May 29, 1962 (# 1, 8); May 17, 1962 (#5), Sound Makers Studio, New York City

Bill Evans was left reeling by the accidental death of his brilliant bassist Scott LaFaro in mid-1961 and didn’t feel ready to record with his new bassist until nearly a year later. When he did go into the studio in May and June of 1962 with Chuck Israels and drummer Paul Motian, the “second trio” produced material for two albums that were to be among Evans’s most popular. Moonbeams includes ballad material from the sessions. The rest of the music from the sessions is in How My Heart Sings! In Moonbeams, Evans did some of his most introspective playing, his sense of loss apparent but relieved by Israels’s power and empathy. “Polka Dots and Moonbeams,” “If You Could See Me Now,” and the others represent Evans at his best, his lyricism underlaid with rhythmic firmness even in the extraordinarily slow “In Love in Vain.”

Moonbeams was the first recording Bill Evans made after the death of his musical right arm, bassist Scott LaFaro. Indeed, in LaFaro, Evans found a counterpart rather than a sideman, and the music they made together over four albums showed it. Bassist Chuck Israels from Cecil Taylor and Bud Powell’s bands took his place in the band with Evans and drummer Paul Motian and Evans recorded the only possible response to the loss of LaFaro — an album of ballads. The irony on this recording is that, despite material that was so natural for Evans to play, particularly with his trademark impressionistic sound collage style, is that other than as a sideman almost ten years before, he has never been more assertive than on Moonbeams. It is as if, with the death of LaFaro, Evans’ safety net was gone and he had to lead the trio alone. And he does first and foremost by abandoning the impressionism in favor of a more rhythmic and muscular approach to harmony. The set opens with an Evans original, “RE: Person I Knew,” a modal study that looks back to his days he spent with Miles Davis. There is perhaps the signature jazz rendition of “Stairway to the Stars,” with its loping yet halting melody line and solo that is heightened by Motian’s gorgeous brush accents in the bridge section. Other selections are so well paced and sequenced the record feels like a dream, with the lovely stuttering arpeggios that fall in “If You Could See Me Now,” and the cascading interplay between Evan’s chords and Israel’s punctuation in “It Might As Well Be Spring,” a tune Evans played for the rest of his life. The set concludes with a waltz in “Very Early,” that is played at that proper tempo with great taste and delicate elegance throughout, there is no temptation by the rhythm section to charge it up or to elongate the harmonic architecture by means of juggling intervals. Moonbeams was a startling return to the recording sphere and a major advancement in his development as a leader. –Thom Jurek

Mariss Jansons leads the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunkson on this live triple-album set, recorded in October 2014 in Munich at a semi-staged performance of Tchaikovsky’s late masterpiece Pique Dame (“The Queen of Spades”), a crime novel set to music. Jansons maintains the orchestra’s long tradition of presenting operas and assembled a group of singers for this performance, sung in the original Russian, who are all native speakers of the language and very familiar with the work.

Would you please write me a violin concerto? A truly original one, full of melodies and written for good violinists? Please, drop me a line!”
These words in a letter from the publisher Simrock to , dated January 27, 1879, resulted in the composition of his Violin Concerto in A minor. Although Dvorák concluded the work towards the end of the summer of 1879, after completing his exceedingly successful Slavonic Dances, a further four years would pass before the violin concerto finally appeared in print and actually received its première. With his reference to “good violinists”, Simrock (ever on the lookout for a good business deal) prob- ably had one person in particular in mind: Joseph Joachim. Two years previously, this violinist – who nowadays would enjoy the status of a megastar – had “launched” the violin concerto written by Johannes Brahms, following a period of intensive collaboration with the composer. So it seemed only logical that Dvorák – who was now also gaining an international reputation – would write the next concerto specifically for the famous virtuoso. During the summer, Dvorák and Joachim spent some “pleasant and delightful moments” together in Berlin. It seemed as if nothing would stand in the way of a rewarding and steady collaboration. Thus in the autumn of 1879, Joachim received the manuscript of the concerto. However, apart from his thanks for the dedication, his reaction was mainly to send back a list of requests for massive changes in both the formal structure of the work and the solo violin part. After meeting personally with him in April 1880, Dvorák decided to fundamentally revise the work, which he concluded the following May.

Despite the relatively short time since the dawn of her international career, which began in 2004, violinist Arabella Steinbacher is already leaving a significant mark on the concert stages and recording studios of the world by this 2009 recording. She is rapidly proving herself to be an extremely mature, well-developed artist capable of handling the most musically sophisticated compositions in her repertoire. Such is certainly the case with the present performance of Karol Szymanowski’s intense, gripping First Concerto. Few violinists tackle this marvelous concerto, but Steinbacher approaches it with every bit as much reverence as is typically given to concertos of Shostakovich or Bartók. What’s more, her clear understanding of and unity with the score capture the attention of listeners from the first bar to the last. Her phenomenal technique allows her to focus on maintaining lines, coloring each note, and making sense of Szymanowski’s melodic language. The PentaTone album continues with an equally engaging performance of the Dvorák Violin Concerto. Although this concerto is performed with great frequency, Steinbacher’s interpretation is energetic and driven, robust without being overly sentimental, and powerful without being forced. Marek Janowski leads the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin in masterful, restrained accompaniments and rich, enthusiastic tuttis. PentaTone’s sound, particularly for those listening in 5.1-channel surround sound, is warm, present, and clear. –AllMusic Review by Mike D. Brownell

Sibelius’ reputation rests chiefly on his magnificent symphonies, seven spectacular creations, all with their particular points of grandeur and originality.
Originally released between 1963 and 1968 Maazel’s Sibelius cycle met with critical acclaim. Particularly praised is Maazel’s interpretation of the Fourth Symphony in the Vienna Philharmonic’s only recording of the work.
Decca has gone back to the original tapes to make a definitive transfer and present a set which includes the remastered recordings in 96 kHz, 24-bit – an unprecedented opportunity to hear these legendary recordings in the best possible audio quality.

With the passing of Lorin Maazel, the world of classical music lost one of its strangest yet most talented figures. The man was a cypher. He held just about every major post that it’s possible to get, his discography was huge and duplicative, and given the quantity of records that he made surprisingly few constitute prime recommendations. I am sure he would not have wanted to go to his grave knowing that his reputation rests on the general consensus that he made the best-ever version of Respighi’s Feste Romane, and the truth is that he did leave a decent number of memorable discs, this Sibelius cycle among them. Part of the problem no doubt stemmed from the fact that almost everything he did was also the specialty of someone else with a bigger reputation or, in any event, an artist who got a bigger promotional push, and Maazel’s own public persona wasn’t exactly lovable. But he was a force to be reckoned with, no doubt about that.
As with most of his core repertoire, Maazel re-recorded the Sibelius symphonies later on, in Pittsburgh in this case, and those performances had some good things, one astoundingly fine performance (the Third Symphony), and some perversely slow ones. This earlier effort is largely quick and often exciting. The Fourth, Seventh, and Tapiola (not included here, sadly) were released separately on Decca Legends, deservedly so. They are wonderful, gripping, beautifully paced performances, played with unusual precision by an orchestra not known for its expertise in Sibelius’ music. Indeed, the only controversial interpretation here is that of the Fifth Symphony, which is very fast, especially in the finale, but also very powerful and certainly convincing. The first two symphonies also have plenty of thrust and drive, unlike the remakes, and Maazel’s mastery is nowhere better demonstrated than in the finale of the Second, a movement that so often dies on the vine elsewhere.
Despite his reputation as an orchestral disciplinarian, there are a few scruffy moments in the strings–the finale of the Sixth, for example–but otherwise the Viennese sound surprisingly idiomatic. Maazel may have been emotionally cool (or weird), and he had an amazing baton technique. The man never missed a cue. But he was by no means a literalist, and you never knew what you were going to get with him. Here, at least, he is remarkably consistent and at the top of his form, and that means just about as good as anyone can be. –David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday

Threat To Survival is the multi-platinum certified rock band, Shinedown’s first new album in three years. The release follows 2012’s Amaryllis, and features the group’s latest #1 rock hit “Cut The Cord”.

Threat To Survival refers to that primal instinct in all of us that determines how we respond to crisis and conflict – the idea of ‘fight or flight’ and the choices we make in any given situation,” explains Shinedown frontman Brent Smith. “This album represents those deciding moments for us as a band. It’s a collection of scenarios that made us who we are, and is, by far, the most autobiographical album we’ve created to date.”

The fifth studio long-player from the Jacksonville, Florida-based hard rock unit, Threat to Survival is also Shinedown’s most pop-oriented set of songs to date. Front-loaded with two of its hardest-hitting (and classic-sounding) cuts in “Asking for It” and the hefty first single “Cut the Cord,” both of which are as hook-laden as they are bruising, Threat to Survival begins to detour from the post-grunge highway with “State of My Head,” a slick amalgam of electro-pop and vintage alt-rock with a catchy as hell though extremely well-worn chorus. Meticulously crafted radio fodder like “How Did You Love,” “Thick as Thieves,” and the Killers-lite “Misfits” follow suit, further distancing the group from its nu-metal origins, but the band hasn’t completely lost its knack for crafting punishing blasts of groove-laden and distortion-heavy modern rock. The roaring “Oblivion” sees vocalist Brent Smith doing his best Layne Staley impression while the band lets loose a firestorm of heavily compressed decibels behind him, and late album highlight “Black Cadillac,” which somehow manages to both brutalize and swing, seems destined to become a fan favorite. If anything, Threat to Survival proves that Shinedown still have plenty of gas left in the tank, and while the occasional foray into the shallower end of the mainstream may divide some listeners, there’s enough here to keep longtime followers satiated (and probably a little curious/nervous as to what the future holds) until the next ride. –AllMusic Review by James Christopher Monger
