Grammy Award-winning vocal group Little Big Town announced this morning, the release of their ninth studio album Nightfall, and accompanying headline tour, The Nightfall Tour. The foursomes’ new album will drop January 17, 2020 succeeding a once-in-a-lifetime performance at the historic Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 2020. This is the first mainstream country performance featured at Carnegie Hall since Alan Jackson in 2013.

Despite comparisons to the fashionable-again Fleetwood Mac (which they irresistibly lean all the way into on the dusky title track of their ninth album), Little Big Town resist trends and end up setting them. This time, that means sticking to ballads and mid-tempo treats. Opener “Next To You” is a slow burn that builds to soaring four-part harmonies; that formula also works on the plaintive, piano-driven “Forever and a Night.” The foursome should offer a master class for younger country artists tempted by pop crossovers, cowboy-hat posturing and TV talent-show histrionics. The Cliff’s Notes version: “Sugar Coat,” on which Karen Fairchild deftly communicates the pain of infidelity by refusing to over-sing the chorus—no show-off runs here—even as the Nashville Sound-style strings swell. There’s also an art to knowing when you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Mariachi-laced “Wine, Beer Whiskey” is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, which cheer-like chanted lyrics that name-check the MVPs of the back bar: “my friend named Jack, he’s got my back…my friend named Tito, he’s my amigo.” – Shelly Ridenour

The Fifth Symphony was finished in 1808, although its composition had occupied Beethoven’s attention for many years before. At its first performance, at Vienna, it was numbered on the program as the Sixth ; and the Pastoral appeared as the Fifth. Both were finished in the same year, but the priority of the C minor is clearly established by Beethoven’s own numbering in the autograph. The C minor Symphony is probably the best known and most admired of the nine, perhaps because it is the most human in its qualities. Beethoven himself has left us a clue to its meaning, namely, that it pictures the struggle of the individual with Fate, the alternations of hope and despair, and the final triumph. In speaking of the first four notes of the opening movement, Beethoven said, some time after he had finished the symphony : “So pocht das Schicksal an die Pforte” (“Thus Fate knocks at the door”). In the Fifth, as in the Third Symphony, we find that concentration of the thought and labor which makes these two musical poems so all-powerful and overwhelming in their effect. It is not marked by a spontaneous flow of musical phrases lightly strung together, or by mere toying with musical forms; but each motive represents a concentrated essence of thought which, once heard, makes an indelible impression, and apparently admits of no change. Written for his fans and inspired by his idols, Walls marks the debut solo album from Louis Tomlinson. Inspired by the records he listened to in his bedroom as a kid and channeling the spirit of the brit pop era of the 90s Louis Tomlinson bares all with this incredibly honest and personal record. Featuring the likes of “Two Of Us,” “We Made It,” “Kill My Mind” among others the album marks a change of direction for Louis’ music, and one he is happy and proud to present to the world.

Four years after going on indefinite hiatus, U.K. boy band One Direction saw its members embark on varied solo careers. Of the group’s most recognizable faces, Zayn Malik and Harry Styles remained at the forefront, with the former setting up shop in the bedroom with his cool R&B seducers and the latter conquering the stage as a fearless, fluid rock god. Meanwhile, Niall Horan established himself in the indie folk realm, delivering earnest ditties with heart and little production fuss, and Liam Payne lost his way in an effort to become a hyper-horny pop star. So when Louis Tomlinson finally released his own solo effort, it was refreshing to see him carve his own path and remain true to his rock influences. On Walls, it’s apparent that — despite not having the same star power as Zayn and Harry — Tomlinson was a crucial part of the One Direction songwriting equation. As wholesome and sweet as any of 1D’s hit singles, the selections on his debut are pleasantly surprising, a straightforward collection of indie and Britpop-influenced singalongs from a maturing family man. A bit of Robbie Williams and a lot of the Gallagher brothers, Walls wears its influences on its sleeves, going as far as interpolating Oasis’ “Acquiesce” on the rousing title track. Noel’s signature harmonizing style further buffers the song and, later, Tomlinson does his best Liam impression with “Only the Brave.” Elsewhere, the ghosts of One Direction past rise on the affirming “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart” and “Perfect Now,” a treacly companion to “What Makes You Beautiful.” A sweet ode to his late mother — who passed in 2016 from leukemia — “Two of Us” is one of a handful of touching moments that add emotional heft to Walls that isn’t found on his former bandmates’ respective efforts. Therein lies one of the best and biggest differences amongst these solo paths: even if the songs on Walls aren’t the most distinct or memorable, they come from a place of authenticity that’s genuinely heartwarming and enjoyable. Like any other settled adult, Tomlinson is perfectly content to stick to the reliable, and Walls winds up being the most mature and natural of the ex-1D bunch. – Neil Z. Yeung

Luca Quintavalle – Eberl Complete Piano Sonatas (2019)

Born in 1765, the same year as Mozart, Anton Eberl also displayed great musical talent from an early age. Only his father’s bankruptcy saved him from a legal career, however, and he threw himself into the world of music with such success that even during their own lifetimes, pieces of Eberl appeared under Mozart’s name.

The earliest of these (published at least 14 times as Mozart’s, never as Eberl’s) was a set of variations on Ignaz Umlauf’s Zu Steffen sprach im Traume, one of Mozart’s favourite teaching pieces. After Mozart’s death Eberl made concert tours with his widow Constanze and her sister Aloysia Lange, accomplished sopranos both, and became director of music at the court of the Russian royal family in St Petersburg. Having returned to Vienna, he had a Symphony in E flat performed at the same concert as the premiere of Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ – and contemporary audiences preferred Eberl’s work! Yet his name rather died with him, in 1807, and so it has been left to modern performers such as Luca Quintavalle to revive Eberl for a new generation of listeners. He was highly regarded in his time as a composer for theatre, but most of his operas are now lost, and his largest surviving body of work is written for keyboard. These seven piano sonatas by themselves should restore his name to a senior rank of Viennese composers around the turn of the 18th century. Eberl made uncommonly ambitious use of minor-key tonalities for his time; there are two G minor sonatas of which the second, Op.39, probably counts as his masterpiece, for its fiery inspiration and breadth of expression.

‘Seven Days Walking’: seven bodies of music to be released over seven consecutive months. The first, ‘Seven Days Walking: Day One’, which interweaves piano and strings in his unmistakable style, is Einaudi’s 14th studio album and will be released on 15th March, on Decca. ‘Seven Days Walking: Day Two’ follows a month later. Each ‘day’ is then released, digitally, a month apart, leading up to ‘Day Seven’ which will be released in the autumn in a box-set of the complete Seven Days. Inspiration for the entire project derived from walks that Einaudi would take through the mountains in winter. He explains, “In January last year I often went for long walks in the mountains, always following more or less the same trail. It snowed heavily, and my thoughts roamed free inside the storm, where all shapes, stripped bare by the cold, lost their contours and colours. Perhaps that feeling of extreme essence was the origin of this album.” The first album focuses on several main themes, which then recur in different forms on the following albums – seven variations following the same imaginary itinerary. Or the same itinerary, retraced at seven different times.

The Arcana label continues its fruitful collaboration with the Archi di Santa Cecilia, the Rome-based ensemble formed from members of the famous Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The ensemble is conducted by Luigi Piovano, the orchestra’s principal cellist and since 2007 a regular partner in a cello-piano duo with Sir Antonio Pappano, its chief conductor (their recording of the Brahms cello sonatas will be released later this year).

The Archi di Santa Cecilia now offer us a brand new recording devoted to Mozart: the famous Serenade “Eine kleine Nachtmusik”, K. 525 and the less familiar but equally brilliant Divertimenti, K. 136, K. 137 and K. 138. The combination of such luminous music and the virtuoso skill of the players is bound to elicit enormous enthusiasm. Their previous recording of the Tchaikovsky and Dvořák’s Serenades met with outstanding acclaim, leading Janos Gardonyi in the Canadian magazine “The Whole Note” to describe the relationship between Piovano and his group in the following terms: “‘I imagine the orchestra moves with him and his every gesture. A tremendous rapport, like hypnosis, that only a Gergiev, Ozawa, Solti or the great Karajan could muster’.

For his third ambitious album with the coltranian title, Joy Ascension, Macha Gharibian assumes his position as pianist, singer, author, composer, arranger, director and leader. Around her, two colorists who handle the notes like De La gouache, drummer Dré Pallemaerts and double bassist Chris Jennings, plus two guests, Bert Joris who draws with his trumpet cool fulgurances at the Chet on the aerial ballad The Woman I Am Longing to Be and Artyom Minasyan who strengthens with his doudouk the hypnotic Sari Siroun Yar. The volcanic voice of Macha Gharibian brings her into the family of solar and inhabited vocalists, a very closed club that goes from Nina Simone to Mélissa Laveaux.

There’s no doubt about the “Joy” in Joy Ascension. Macha Gharibian is radiant and vivacious as never before in this, her third album. The Armenian pianist and singer has long been blending genres with a divine refinement, sidestepping the stodgy mass of jazz’n’world clichés. With jazz and improvisation as its backbone, wreathed around with Armenian folk music, the album takes an almost poppy approach to some melodies and draws on oriental sounds, deep and growling incantations – always uniting these disparate elements with ease and finesse. Her education in classical piano and her studies alongside Ravi Coltrane, Craig Taborn, Jason Moran and Andy Milne equipped her to create a very original, nomadic jazz that comes in both vocal and instrumental flavours. This time, with the help of an exceptional rhythm section made up of Belgian drummer Dré Pallemaerts and the Canadian Chris Jennings on the double bass, the borders of her musical world have expanded to take in groove (as in the funky Fight) and incantatory fury (Freedom Nine Dance). All the same, Bert Joris’s trumpet can still add something to the magnificence of the ballad The Woman I Am Longing to Be and Artyom Minasyan’s duduk can transcend the already-semi-mystical force of Sarí Siroun Yar. Add in a beautiful and well-conceived cover of Paul Simon’s classic 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover punctuated by some sparks flying from Fender Rhodes – and Macha Ghabarian has created a dense and winning record that cements her standing as a charmingly unique figure on the modern jazz scene. – Marc Zisman

Maja Weber spielt auf einem speziellen Stradivari-Cello, dem “Bonamy Dobrée-Suggia“ 1717. Es war u.a. ein Lieblingsinstrument von Pablo Casals (seine Schülerin hat es gespielt) Der Cellist Hancock spielte es, der englische Gelehrte und Namensgeber Bonamy Dobrée besaß es. Die bewegende Geschichte des kostbaren Cellos beginnt mit der geheimnisvollen, divenhaften Portugiesin Guilhermina Suggia (1885–1950), die im Spiel mit ihrem Lieblingscello technische Perfektion und gefühlvolle Interpretation verschmolz und so ihr Publikum mit warmen und tiefen Tönen verzauberte. In Paris als Schülerin und Geliebte von Pablo Casals, in London als Grande Dame und Kosmopolitin, war sie im heimatlichen Porto die Sehnsuchtsvolle und Heimatsuchende. Nach Suggias Tod wurde das Cello verkauft, der Erlös kam Stipendiaten der Royal Academy of Music zugute. Das Stradivari-Cello “Bonamy Dobrée-Suggia“ gehört heute zur Sammlung der Schweizer Stradivari-Stiftung Habisreutinger. Maja Weber spielte es während 20 Jahren weltweit in unzähligen Konzerten. Es gibt kaum einen besseren Partner, um sich an eines der eindrucksvollsten musikalischen Denkmäler der ganzen westlichen Musik heranzuwagen.

The plectrum lute duo was one of the most popular ensembles for professional instrumentalists in late 15th-century Western Europe. This recording presents for the first time the bulk of a surviving repertoire that can arguably be considered for the lute duo, performed on two equal plectrum lutes or with a combination of lute and gittern – a smaller member of the lute family. The album, inspired by the Ferrarese virtuoso Pietrobono dal Chitarino (c. 1417–1497), acclaimed in his lifetime as ‘the foremost lutenist in the world’, includes the earliest printed lute duos by Francesco Spinacino and Joan Ambrosio Dalza and the two-voice instrumental works by Johannes Tinctoris. The often highly ornamented instrumental duos are mostly reworkings of songs, some of which are given here in a performance with the singer Grace Newcombe to provide the context for the lute arrangements that follow.

Singing French mélodie necessitates the singer to strike a difficult balance between a perfect diction making the text which has been put to music intelligible, as well as getting the right tone of expression, being careful it doesn’t descend into preciosity. Thanks to a certain melodic line, Marc Mauillon is both tenor and baritone: he thus counts an enormous repertoire from the baroque era all the way through to today’s music. This Fauré recital is a veritable delight thanks to all of these combined qualities, to which the French singer adds his clear and touching timbre.

A master of the art of the melody from his beginnings all the way through to his final compositions, Gabriel Fauré did not always put timeless texts to music himself. Beyond his faultless style and a voice perfectly suited to this art, Marc Mauillon (tastefully) discerned the suitable texts to accompany the 31 melodies of this new album dedicated to Fauré. With the help of Anne Le Bozec, who so judiciously supports him on the piano, he has picked works from Victor Hugo (one of Fauré’s real passions), Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine and Molière as well as more recent literature from Sully Prudhomme, Armand Silvestre, Paul de Choudens and Catulle Mendès. The poetic renewal embodied by Hugo, Baudelaire, Verlaine and so many others after them radically changed the musical landscape and propelled French art song into a true golden age. This tribute to Fauré, the supreme master of the mélodie, gains its radiance from Marc Mauillon’s ideally clear voice and Anne Le Bozec’s delicate pianism. The singer’s second ‘solo’ recording on harmonia mundi shows him just as much at home in Faurean word setting as in the text of Lambert’s Leçons de ténèbres!

The 76-year-old musician, Marcos Valle, launches on January 10, 2020, the album Cinzento with rapper Emicida’s partnership in two songs. It is the third work of the carioca singer and pianist in less than two years. The album follows releases with Dori Caymmi and Edu Lobo – Edu, Dori & Marcos May 2018 -, and Always June this year.

A highlight in Marcos Valle’s new album are the partnerships, because all of them are unheard of in Rio’s discography. In Gray, Well Gil participates in “Protect Yourself”, Domenico Lancellotti in “At Yes For No”, Kassin in “Distant Places”, Moreno Veloso in “Rediscover” and Zélia Duncan in “Rare Trails”.

El Dorado, the mythical City of Gold is Spanish legend, the place where dreams come true. As the people willing to take that leap have discovered – the search can’t truly begin until you’ve learned to let go – of the past, of yourself. The debut solo album from Marcus King, El Dorado, is a revelation. Passionate, penetrating and deeply soulful, El Dorado weaves soul music, gospel, R&B and country into a something modern and classic. Teaming with producer Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) for sessions at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, the pair co-wrote the 11 songs on El Dorado along with esteemed writers on various tracks including Pat McLaughlin, Paul Overstreet and Ronnie Bowman.

After three albums under the name The Marcus King Band (Soul Insight in 2015, the eponymous The Marcus King Band in 2016 and Carolina Confessions in 2018), the Southern prodigy now operates under simply his own name. At only 23 years old, the South Carolina kid has always played freely, a craftsman of a very location-oriented bluesy rock, with outlaw country influences as well as timeless soul à la Atlantic/Stax. Unsurprisingly, El Dorado juggles between sounds that are akin to The Allman Brothers, Faces, The Black Crowes, Gov’t Mule, Tedeschi Trucks Band and The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street. This time, King has called in Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys for production, in order to focus more on the songwriting and the songs’ commercial potential. The spirit of infinite jam sessions that soundtrack a night of slow drinking feels as if it’s been left behind, in favour of more constricted songs. All the better: El Dorado is a flow of Al Green-esque soulful slows (Wildflowers & Wine), more uptempo ballads (One Day She’s Here) and country rock hits (Too Much Whiskey, a nod to Willie Nelson’s Whiskey River). Marcus King has the vocals of a weathered soulman, sometimes conjuring up the golden age of Rod Stewart with Faces or John Fogerty from Creedence Clearwater Revival. Furthermore, to breathe even more history into his album, King brought in drummer Gene Chrisman and pianist Bobby Wood, big names of the American Sound Studio who have played with Dusty Springfield and Elvis. Paul Franklin’s pedal steel guitar even makes a feature. But under this avalanche of sounds, influences, names and vintage tones which could quickly submerge the main artist, Marcus King possesses a highly original personality, something which this album manages to strongly transmit to the listener. – Marc Zisman

The 20th century, the century of totalitarianism, has undoubtedly been marked by the horror of mass, industrialized crime. The world of music, like any other, could not have been oblivious to the ominous events brought by, as Karl Popper would say, the enemies of open society. Accordingly, we find a wide range of attitudes, from musicians of unwavering affinity towards totalitarian regimes, to those who were ousted, or in the worst of cases, even murdered by their compatriots in power. None of the three composers present on this album are at any of the extremes mentioned, but their respective biographies were indelibly marked by Soviet repression or National Socialism, or at worst by both. Beyond these historical circumstances, the great success of Mario Prisuelos in making this programme has been to detect how the three works he has chosen for his recording, written in a time interval of approximately a quarter of a century, are exemplary in terms of reflecting certain aesthetic changes of his time. This new CD from BR-KLASSIK features the ballet music ‘Carmen Suite’, based on the famous melodies from George Bizet’s eponymous opera and masterfully arranged and adapted by the composer Rodion Shchedrin in 1968, and Ottorino Respighi’s well-known symphonic poem ‘Pini di Roma’ (The Pines of Rome), written in 1924. The name of the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin is primarily associated in the West with his ‘Carmen Suite’, which has been highly popular ever since its first performance. The thirteen movements of this ballet music are based on Bizet’s opera Carmen, and carefully adapted to the musical language of the present day. After Shchedrin’s wife Maya Plisetskaya, long-time prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre, had vainly asked both Shostakovich and Khachaturian to compose a Carmen ballet especially for her, her husband decided to do so instead – a decision that was rewarded with international success. The rousing music in Shchedrin’s interpretation sounds very familiar, yet in many ways, entirely new! The Italian composer Ottorino Respighi is especially admired for his masterly instrumentation. The symphonic poems in his ‘Roman Trilogy’, which deal with the fountains, pine trees and festivals of his adopted home city of Rome, made his name immortal. In his ‘Pines of Rome’ he describes four locations in the Eternal City, each with a different historical background.

This surprisingly coupled album has been released by BR Klassik since the death of Mariss Jansons in December 2019. In Carmen’s Suite, a ballet score for strings, timpani and four percussion groups written to the attention of his wife, the ballerina Maya Plisetskaya (1925-2015), the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin transcribed excerpts of Bizet’s music, in striving to get away from it. This work incorporates music from Bizet’s opera, plus material from the second L’Arlésienne Suite and La jolie fille de Perth. Throughout this rustic and playful work, the colourful, fiery and rhythmic orchestra gives the feeling of having fun at the same time as Jansons shows his science of conducting. In Respighi, contrary to the sense of over-the-top spectacle of Riccardo Muti, Jansons shows greater restraint, not without creating impressive moments, highlighted by a very good sound recording.
